He is not very clear when teaching, and very unapproachable. His homework assignments are overwhelmingly long, but not required (small amount of extra credit). You will do ok in this class if you have 20+ hours per week to dedicate outside of class, and can learn from the textbook instead of lecture. Otherwise, stay away!
The most difficult instructor I have ever had. His expectations are unclear, his assignments are unrealistic, and his homework load is very heavy - and worthless. He seemed very annoyed at questions and was difficult to talk to. Pompous, arrogant and condescending, though I doubt he could pronounce any of these words.
The worst instructor I have every had. The homework is pointless, you cannot ask questions and when you do they are not answered. He spends most of his time talking to himself and patting himself on the back. His tests are very hard as well. STAY AWAY!
worst math teacher ever. maybe he know his math but he can not teach it. the test are way to hard. need to use an outside source to learn anything.
You have to keep in mind that nobody ever said that Calculus was supposed to be easy. With that being said, Jaimos does a decent job explaining the material. There is a lot of homework in his class, but it is for your benefit. Learning is an active process and you will never suceed unless you try. I'd take another class from him in the future.
Good professor. There are 5 tests and 4 large assignments which are difficult but manageable. The homework takes a few days to complete. This is the best I have done in a math class and my test score consistently climbed. He is a good professor it just is a matter of whether or not you understand how he presents the material.
If you are anywhere near average this is NOT the teacher for you. He assigns homework but it rarely helps with the tests. The pre-test assignments worth 50 point each are ridiculous. 20 hours each at least. Tests are so far over what the book teaches you that it's worthless to study. Arrogant, snide, pretentious, yet mispronounces words constantly.
The most difficult math course of my life. Homework is impossible to keep up with, and is also graded impossibly. He is soo picky, and if you do it out of the book instead of "his way" it is WRONG. I went to his office hours countless times and barely managed a B. Dont take his class.
If you enroll in his class by accident, do yourself a favor and DROP HIS CLASS! He is full of himself, but makes mistakes when lecturing, and when he makes a mistake, he moves on without explaining it. His class is extremely confusing, his tests cover things that he didn't, and he makes a basic course more difficult than it should be. Total jack@$$
Two classes into the summer session and I have yet to receive a syllabus! He uses his own photography website to assign HW which he explained does not matter in his course(for grades). In an eight week summer term the first was completely wasted!
He is a very smart man, but the way he explains things can only be understood after a while. If you ask him to do an example, he will. He is one of those teachers that is kinda of a pain but at the end if you work hard you will know the material, but you might not have the grade you want. This class will take a lot of time.
He thinks he is a math God. He's one of those math teachers that wants you to do everything his way. Homework is extensive, you have to write everything out and if you don't you get it wrong even if you get the right answer. When you ask for help he just mocks you. He plays favorites, if he likes you, he passes you. And he is seriously INSANE!!
Greatest Professor I've ever had. Don't listen to these other ****s. They're just stupid as hell.
Don't take him.
If you have not taken math 147 before, I wouldn't advise this guy. I took math 147 in high school, and I got an A in this class. I advise this class for those kinds of people. Attendance isn't mandatory. It worked well for me, but I think I may have had the only A in the class.
Good teacher, explains everything very clearly. He answers emails in a reasonably short amount of time. I wish i wouldve showed up to class more because I ended up learning a lot when I would actually show up to class. I would recommend if you plan to attend class the majority of the days.
VERY HARD INSTRUCTOR!!! Had to get a tutor to understand coursework once I did this it became a little easier. Bookwork is extra credit but pointless. His graded assignments are ridiculous. Stuff my tutor (who has passed 144 and higher classes with flying colors) couldn't even understand. Had to drop before it was too late! DO NOT TAKE HIM!
This was a tough class. The homework was extensive and time consuming, but doing it helped me learn the concepts. I came out of there with a hard-earned grade, and I learned a TON. I found Prof. Skriletz to know his subject backwards & forwards! He was helpful and caring. I'd take a class from him again.
i had a hard time keeping up with his pace and teachg style.
This teacher is horrible!! I told him I had a learning disability and he told me to learn how to read the text book. He did not seem to care to help me in the littlest bit! I would NOT take him EVER again!! He thinks he is the math god..
I didn't like this teacher at all. He is very unclear and confusing when it comes to explaining problems. He tends to ramble on and talks really fast. Plus he has this complex about him that holds him back from being a good teacher. Don't take him.
Nobody gives it to you harder and faster than Prof. Skriletz. He is an experienced mathematician who takes math to the next level. Some argue he's a hard/difficult teacher, but it's just that he refuses to treat you like a child or to assume you're stupid. He challenges you AND gives you a rich understanding of the concept. Amazing teacher!
I do not recommend this teacher ever! He yells the whole period and thinks he knows it all. He repeats himself about the stuff that doesn't matter and his tests are nothing like his in class problems. If you can learn by the book from yourself then you might be okay in his class.
I think he is an incredible math teacher and probably one of the most intelligent people I have ever talked to. He makes his assignments very clear and he leaves it up to your responsibility to learn. I really am not one to love math but he relates it in a way I understand and want to understand. Plus he makes me laugh sometimes! GREAT teacher.
I had taken this class about 5 years ago and got a B in it from UofI. I went back to school and decided to take it for a 'refresher'. I ended up dropping the class because his way of teaching is to teach your self basically. He is smart. but has a hard time explaining material clearly. I wouldn't recommend him at all!
Worst teacher ever!!!!! Basically tells you ever class to teach your self out of the book. Not sure why the guy yells 24/7 but he does. I would recommend taking a math class taught by a squirrel over taking one taught by Mr. Skriletz!!!!
Horrible teacher. Most students need math just because their major requires it, not because they want to learn the concepts behind it. He wants you to understand why more than how, which isn't helpful. Take this class only if you want to pay 700+ to teach yourself.
Skriletz isn't there to entertain you, but he methodically goes through lessons, always asks if there are any questions, and doesn't give a ridiculous amount of homework. Tests are to the point and he grades giving you the "benefit of the doubt." If you understand the material you'll do fine.
Jaimos is a great teacher. Had him over the summer course so it was a bit rushed. He always took time to explain anything anyone ASKED about. He is not there to spoon feed you math. If you like your classes at grade school level do not get into one of his classes. If you enjoy LEARNING something Jaimos is your guy.
I recommend taking math from someone else if you can. He's a smart man who knows his material, but he kind of talks down to students, and likes to ramble on about the importance of understanding the concepts behind math rather than just getting the right answer - which is a valid statement, but we didn't need to hear for 10+ minutes every class.
Passionate teacher. Provides multiple ways to interact with him, if you have questions. I never had an email go un-answered more than probably 20 minutes. Teaches a very complex topic in a limited time. Unless you just "get" the material, it is not an easy class. VERY fair in grading, to somewhat lenient. Cares about teaching math.
Amazing teacher who understands not only the subject but how to portray and teach it to others. Ask a question and he can answer immediately without being puzzled like most professors. He actually knows the subject and is passionate about it. Have never had a professor this good before in any subject.
Very good teacher and understands the topic well. I don't care much for math but it does come easy to me. Do the 12 graded assignments and they will prepare you for the tests. No surprises on tests. Strict grading on assignments but lenient on tests.
When you don't get the material, he makes you feel like an idiot instead of explaining it more clearly. He rushes through class and writes hardly legible scribbles on the board. Outside of class he is not very willing to help, mostly because he just can't grasp the fact that some people don't get math. Don't take him unless you're a math genius.
DO NOT TAKE HIM. Literally he is the worst teacher I have ever had. He prides himself on not passing students, and his basically yells when lecturing. His assignments take hours to complete only 4 questions, and he focusses on math being logic rather than teaching the material. He is not helpful when you ask questions and wont change his grading!
Great teacher. Builds very well on ideas. Also knows the math from stats, chem, bio, finance, etc. Teaches you the concepts really well instead of having you memorize formulas. Tests are very basic, he doesnt try to trick you, but can be pedantic about showing the work. Very approachable and will spend time explaining. excellent answering questions
He is patronizing and has inconsistent grading. One guy in the class spent the semester wasting our time by asking irrelevant questions. And instead of teaching math, the teacher fed into the nonsense, but still expected us to know the material.
It seems that James has problems communicating on a personal level;instead of asking him when something was unclear I would read the textbook because he is difficult to deal with.He gets defensive very quickly. But as a teacher he is very good!I am not a math genius and I got an A in his class. No surprises on exams, his expectations are clear.
He is really very thorough about explaining concepts. He very clearly states his expectations and grades based on how you do the problem(If the procedure is right you will get most of the points), can be unintentionally intimidating when you ask questions but he always gives time to ask. HW is tough but tests are easy if you send the time on hw.
Jaimos is one of the best math instructors I have ever had. He set me up for success in Calc and made me learn that math is a way of thinking, a discipline, rather than pointless questions and a number to arrive at. Great professor, good guy.
Jaimos is easily the best math teacher I've had at Boise State. The subject material is fairly easy and he covers it quickly, but he does a great job explaining everything. Prepare for a lot of work!
He actually is very condescending, one girl said she had a question with one of the problems and he just said "well its a formula, just plug it in" not really good for questions, and not terribly engaging, and also seems kinda mean, he talks about how useless online classes are then assigns everything online, take only if you have no other choice
Absolutely worst teacher I've had. He is rude and condescending. He tells you to asks questions and then tells you that you should know that already. He personally told me that I was too narrow minded to understand his subject material.
I found him to be very helpful whenever I needed him. Overall he is a very good calculus teacher and does a good job of giving the material meaning.
Very hard subject, but Jaimos is a great teacher. Is always willing to answer questions and encourages students to do so. His tests are pretty straight forward and he gives you exactly what you need to do well on them. I am terrible at Math and got a B+ in his class.
I studied so hard and failed. I needed just few point to pass and he did not let me even i attend all of his lectures and did all the homework. BAD BAD BAD
He is a bad teacher we couldn't understand any things
Terrible lecture teacher. If you ask him a question, he will answer it poorly and you will end up more confused then ever. Does poor job helping students.
Terrible lecture teacher. Enough said.
Anybody rating him low probably dropped his class in the first couple of weeks or didn't actually ask for help. He can be a little difficult to understand, but he is never condescending. If you need help, ask, if you don't understand, be honest. Calculus is kinda hard but he really will help you out. But you def need to put in your own effort.
He is not flexible at all and very strict with grading exams. i sometimes get confused in his class because of his way in explaining problems . he's not the worst but there are better instructors. take him if you only don't have any choices.
Let me first say this, I haven't had above a C in math since the 7th grade. Skriletz's Calculus, was my first B- in a long time. He makes so many tools available for you. You can email him anytime, he replies fast, there's tutoring and e tutoring available. Calc isn't easy, but ask for help and he will give it to you.
NOT HELPFUL AT ALL! Been in school for 3 years and this is the first class I have to retake. The tutoring center taught me the little I could learn. I went to class and the tutoring center everyday. Even the tutors couldn't figure out some of his work. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!
Horrible professor. I was told not to take him, I didn't listen. Was not helpful, rude, and didn't really teach. Did not miss a class and still didn't understand him. The tutors couldn't even figure out his homework problems. Tutors taught me what I did learn, not him. DO NOT TAKE HIM!
Interesting teacher to say the least, he is very eccentric but super helpful if you ask. He teaches, he doesn't show. I would recommend getting a study group together because he can be intimidating to face alone.
Does not lecture, basically all on your own.
Not helpful, or clear at all. Trying a weird new structure to the class that is relatively untested. Lectures 10 minutes and then we do problems in WebAssign the rest of class and since I'm teaching myself, saw no real need to attend class other than to take exams or turn in the written assignments. Might as well just take an online course.
Everyday he has the notes pre-typed up and briefly covers what you will be doing. Almost all the class time is for HW with he and the TA to answer questions. Rarely have to work at home on stuff. IDK why he has so many bad reviews, I would take him again in a heartbeat! Sooooo much better than some of the other terrible math teachers @ BSU
I got an A in his trig class, so i'm not just complaining out of spite. It may not be his fault, but because of how the class is set up, I spent 20 hours week at the peak in his class. It's taught with ALEKS, so there is almost no classroom instruction, if there is then its on a topic you either saw weeks ago, or won't for weeks.
Hard but fair.
Calc 2... it was hard but I did well because I went to class.
He will not coddle you. He can be intimidating but will answer any question you give him. He tries to get you to think through the problems and will ask you to interpret what you are doing. Attend every class and do the suggested problems or you will not do well in this class, or probably any math based class. Awesome teacher- just a bit quirky.
Best teacher ever, He knows what is he doing. Just attend the class you will UNDERSTAND EVERY THING!!
You had to work hard on your own, but the prof was always available to help, even via email after hour.
He started with basic concepts and then explained how everything was related and how it led into calculus objectives. Lectured for 15 min and talks quickly, so PAY ATTENTION. Then gave the rest of class to work on homework and get help from him. He's funny and helpful, but he will not accept late work, and he does not take attendance until the end
Here to save you from the horribleness of taking his class. Took him forever to explain anything and he rarely explains things in a helpful way. Demeaning towards students and a tough grader for stupid reasons. I did well in his class, but it was a nightmare. Do not take his class! Annoying voice and he once said "is" 137 times in 30 minutes.
Not helpful, and makes you feel like a burden when you ask questions. He is very ADHD and paces the whole class which can bother me. And he is very vague.
Makes you feel like you should know much more when walking into the class. Really cares about you learning the material but gets impatient quickly with students and doesn't spend extra time clarifying to make sure you understand. I failed this class last semester and got an 88 on the final this semester with Jaimos.
Jaimos is a really great lecturer, it's difficult to lose interest in the material, even if the lecture goes over an hour (which it sometimes did). You can tell right away that this man is passionate about mathematics and it's applications. It was in this class that the connections between my mathematics and physics courses linked up. 8/10
Jaimos is blunt, and makes you work for answers. His way of teaching forces you to work out the problems on your own and among your group members. He encourages students to think critically about the answers. He will help you if you get stuck, but he won't just fork up the answer. Expect to put forth an effort in his class.
For me, Mr. Skriletz was a great teacher. He lectures what you need to know and then dedicates the rest of the time to completing the homework sets. That being said, you have to be willing to put effort into this class and going over the material if you hope to do well. He is always there to help if needed; all that you have to do is ask.
Skriletz was an amazing teacher. He does a reverse classroom meaning that he lectures for 10-20 minutes on average (sometimes can be up to 40 minutes) then you work on your homework for the rest of the class. This system may seem weird but it works. He is really good at answering questions by guiding you to the answer. Would recommend to take!
I would want someone to tell me this if I was looking at this website trying to decide: DO NOT TAKE A CLASS FROM HIM. He will consistently be condescending or make you feel stupid for asking any question, he isn't clear, and he honestly said that "women aren't good at math" once. Again, he doesn't care about his students and is very rude.
He's a little off-putting at first, but he really knows his stuff. Ask him a question and he will help you understand.
Jaimos is a math purist and he really cares about you learning the material and applying it to your career path of choice. He is one of the smartest people Ive been around in my college career and he formats his class really well. He doesnt just give you answers hell sit there and help you think through it so you can actually learn. Great guy.
I have taken 3 classes from Jaimos and if I could take more classes I would. He is not an easy A kind of teacher so if that is what you are looking for avoid. If however you want to learn and put in the work to master Calc 3 take it from Jaimos. He is brilliant and there is no question he cannot answer.
Ahh Jaimos, interesting guy. I took both Calc II and Calc III from him and barely got by both times. That being said, he is very good at his specific job. Has an uncanny knack for his profession and math in general. I didn't so much enjoy the endless DAILY homework but hey if you want to pass that's what you have to do. Makes you work hard for it.
I don't know how but I always end up with good math teachers. Jaimos tries to keep lectures as short as possible. Doesn't cares much about small mistakes on quizzes and exams but tries to see whether you actually learned the material or not. Would definitely recommend him for Math 175. Put on as much effort as you can and you'll certainly get an A.
Great instructor. He really knows his stuff. Many times during lecture he will connect the math material to physics, engineering, and computer science. He really does care. Some people say hes condescending but he really isn't and if people think he is its just the way he gets his point across.
Good for your brain, bad for your GPA. This guy has his followers, students that followed him through most of math that he teaches. He has a very deep mathematical knowledge, the downside of this is his line of thinking lends itself to tough, mathematical grading that can be frustrating. I felt challenged but my grade was lower than expected.
Lectures for about 10-15 minutes. Marks you off for every little thing, even if you get the problem right. Told us from day 1: "if you ask me a question, I will ask you 6." So, I don't ask any questions. Says 10% of each exam is not passable, so beware of that. I will be taking someone else if I don't pass. Very condescending. Avoid if you can!!!!
If you want to understand math he's the best professor available. If you care about your GPA go else where. With that being said I would take him for every course available
Jaimos is great. This was my second go around with MATH175 and it was no comparison with the first time. The structure of this class worked fantastically for me. Complete the worksheets and get feedback on your NOTATION, complete all homeworks and exam reviews, study for quizzes and exams and you will be just fine in this class. NOTATION is key.
Jaimos was an awesome calc 2 teacher. His lectures, tho sometimes short are always very good. The worksheets he INSISTS on you doing are beneficial & help lead you to the how & the why of a problem. Nothing on the exams are surprises, except the last problem, which is tough, but doable. Can sometimes b condescending, but 1 of the best profs at BSU.
I got good grades in his class but do yourself a favor by taking somebody else's calc class, please.
@ boise st. the only difference between the calc2 courses are the prof, they are all the same amount of work and material, so no class is "easier" than another. The most important choice is to pick a prof. that presents the material well. Jaimos gives fascinating lectures & he is very intelligent . You will love calc & learn a lot by taking him.
The lectures are pretty quick, but Jaimos explains concepts fairly well. Its a good idea to get as much work done in class as you can so you can ask questions, because while you can tough it out on your own its much better to get a straight answer from him.
Jaimos wrote most of the curriculum for Calc 1 and 2, he's wicked smart. I have an immense amount of respect for him his teaching style, and his sense of humor. He is very particular and picky on notation and continuity, but he has good reason for it. Honestly a better calc 2 professor than calc 1, so if you had a good grasp with 170, then take him
He knows his theory, and is extremely tough when it comes to grading, he does not like giving As. Not so heavy on assignments but his tests are extremely tough, you have to get the notation perfect. If you want an easy pass then don't take him, but if you care about the theory and want a deep understanding of the math, then go for it.
I have avoided this professor in the past due to ratings here. Boy was I wrong to listen! Professor Skriletz does not give anything away, he expects you to work for it. However, his explanations makes math almost simple once understood. He responds very quickly to emails, even late into the evening. One of the best math teachers I have ever had.
I have taken Jaimos since calc 1. By far the smartest professor I have had. Every time I ask a question, he answers it by telling me exactly what I need to hear to fully understand. I would get frustrated because I thought I needed a straightforward answer, but trust this guy when he talks. Take this guy if you want to see mathematics
He's a good enough lecturer, if a bit long-winded, but horrible at answering questions. If you have a question, make sure there is no way it could possibly be misinterpreted. He's kind of like a computer actually: He answers exactly the question you asked, not the question you intended to ask, and he will go on for a while about it too.
Jaimos might know what he is talking about but he does not know how to teach it at all. He makes the students feel stupid everytime we ask a question and won't show us the correct way to do something, rather repeat the same comment over and over again. You can only rely on the other students to help you learn the content, he don't know how to teach
Professor Skriletz's lectures are long but well thought out, and they do a good job of explaining the content. Unfortunately, he comes off as really condescending when you ask a question. I don't think this is intentional, but it can really make you feel stupid and afraid to ask questions. Make sure to do the worksheets, as they are really helpful.
Jaimos gets a lot of flak for the way he grades which I think is a bit unfair. In his defense, a lot of upper-division cs classes require an almost perfect understanding of MATH-189, and Jaimos breaks down each topic very well and gives you all the tools necessary to understand the material, and will reward you for truly understanding it.
One of the best lecturers I have ever taken. He really wants to inspire a thorough understanding of the material, so derivations are very in depth. People say he doesn't answer questions well, but really he's just isn't going to sugar coat anything. Definitely take his class, but be ready to take notes and suffer some homework.
Can be a nitpicky grader but he really wants you to learn the processes behind math, not just how to get the answer. He provides you with lots of different learning materials and explains topics and how to do problems really well. He is also always willing to answer questions and help you with whatever you need.
Stop wasting your time and just take Skriletz for anything you can! Math 333 isn't easy and it can be intimidating, but Skriletz makes it possible to get through. Amazing lectures gives the "why" behind everything, fair grading system, very organized and he wrote the class so no matter which prof you choose you're learning from his material!
He's tough on grading but it's easy to get full credit as long as you follow his instructions, be comfortable writing short captions for the steps you do in a problem (ie. "Take the determinant", then doing so). It was hard to ask questions sometimes but he responded almost always within an hour to emails and the online notes are fantastic.
He's very knowledgeable when it comes to math. His teaching is to further understanding, not just how to solve the exercises. One thing to be careful about is how you show your work, it's important to include English statements for each of the major steps of solving a problem. Overall, he's a great professor.
TAKE HIM: if you are able to teach yourself concepts through detailed notes, want a well-thought-out calendar and homework schedule, and don't mind studying a ton (i fell into this category). DONT TAKE HIM: If you don't take condescending remarks well, need to ask ton of questions for comprehension, or need thorough guidance through math problems.
grade is based more on how your work is written out and formatted than the actual math.
Jaimos is a very sink or swim type of professor. The homework is important but not overwhelming. Nothing in the class is a surprise and the schedule is provided and kept to a professional standard. If you are able to weather his abrasive personality and put forward the requested effort you will enjoy the class.
Jaimos is the best math teacher I've had. He has a personality that can be a hit or miss for some people, but I think he is just blunt because he's a genius. He created the Math333 course/notes software and it's seriously incredible. I was able to skip class and just learn from the HW/notes software on my own, and still get an A. Take him!!
The class wasn't necessarily too hard, but I ended up having to teach most of it to myself. His lectures were very hypothetical and not really that helpful, talking about projections and whatnot as opposed to showing how to do the calculations or problems. And when you asked a question, he would just tell you the same stuff again.
All Jaimos cares about is teaching you in a way that is as clear as possible, and in return you need to show him ALL the work that you do. If you are good about showing your work and regularly completing your homework, you will pass this class. He might come off as strict and uncaring, but his teaching covers everything you need to know to pass.
Professor Skriletz does an amazing job explaining mathematical concepts. Some other people claim he is callous or uncaring, however he actually wants his students to understand the methodology behind the math, rather than how to just get the answer. I would highly recommend Jaimos, especially if you have to take math classes beyond Math 170.
Confusing teacher, talks alot about math not being a science, but can't explain anything very well. Tests will try to trick you. You will have to learn on your own.
Loves to talk about his subject. But for the most part, a lot of the learning comes from your own time if you dont fully understand him. Very tough grader overall.
Jaimos is a challenging but brilliant professor. His lectures dive deep, and the homework is tough but fair. Using the course notes software and Unstuck AI really helped me stay on top of the material. Worth taking if you're willing to put in the work.
Take this mans classes! You WILL learn mathematics deeply, you WILL get lower grades than you think, you WILL get good at notation. He's an incredible lecturer with a great understanding of math, however he deeply does not like the idea of memorization or being good at math by its sake.
