Really coll teacher! i loved the class!
this class is seriously the best. i entered this class fairly interested but now im considering minoring in this subject. its a lot of work but you can't complain because he's just as helpful. & the class is very very stimulating... its not just work study test. you're learning.
The professor was nice and funny. But the class work is hard. I really thought that i was going to get an A. I did everything my best. There are weekly quizzes that are 200 points each.. based off the reading-which is ridiculous. Finals are easy if you study. There are 2 term papers which are kinda hard and boring. i prefer easier professor
Jake is really helpful and brings real world concepts. Taking modern theory with him was hard and a challenge, however the readings and his teachings are extremely enlightening. I'm not the best at papers, but he'll help you out and i nearly got an A in this class. You cannot slack off in this class, best to work with someone as well.
he's a great teacher! very knowledgeable and the subject itself is very interesting. i love this class minus the workload. weekly (online/45-mins/at home)quizzes that are worth 200 points, but the class is based on a percentage scale not by points, so basically, if you want an A, you have to do well on everything. midterms and finals aren't that ha
Very funny and enthusiastic professor. Jake genuinely cares for the success of his students. There is quite a lot to read and a quiz every week, but he clarifies everything you need to know and keeps class interesting. He is a great professor and an overall wonderful person. Go to his office hours! He loves when students make an effort to learning
GREAT PROFESSOR :] he is very passionate about his work and he really cares about his class. he is also very funny which keeps the class awake-- there's never a dull moment. weekly quizzes based on readings from the course reader and about three papers that aren't so hard. so do well on the readings and ask him for help you'll be fine :]
he has favorites and bases the way he grades papers off of this, when confronted about the grading declares that a certain number of people must get certain grades, therefore does not follow the rubric, speaks to his students like children, lots of busy work, more work than should be required for 100 level class
first thing you notice is that he is very involve with what he teaches so you'll learn the topic in depth. Great teacher. make things interesting. The work is hectic though. but very doable if you dont have many class to focus on. we get quizes almost every week. he does give study guide for tests (i believe there is 2 test and a final; there is
this professor is one of the best professors i've had in long beach. his teaching is very comprehendible, he is very involved and loves sociology, so you will learn alot. There is also alot of reading and you MUST read to pass the quizzes and exams. Also pay much attention to what he mentions in class b/c he just might add it on the exams.
One of my favorite teachers. The class is NOT easy, but it is definitely not hard. He really cares about his students and he will help you & work around your schedule to help in his office hours. Go visit him! it makes him happy. You really do learn alot in this class.
He is very enthusiastic and the material is A LOT. The readings are long and sometimes hard to understand. Good teacher though, keep up with the material.
Dr. Wilson is the best teacher I have ever had. His class is much deeper than your run-of-the-mill class. He pushed me to be a better student and made me want to learn. I wish more professors were this committed.
I liked Wilson a lot as a person, and his lectures were always interesting. HOWEVER the reading is soooooo boring! Honestly the most boring reading anyone could ever assign. Everything is repetitive. You also have to read his book Getting the Goods, I was literally falling asleep while trying to read it. Overall: Cool teacher, Terrible reading
This class was horrible. I feel like it was a complete waste of time/money. I didn't learn anything at all. His lectures are not on the readings and you must read since he gives you one quiz a week. The quizzes are timed and most answers are the same. The midterm and final does not have to do with the studyguide which is a waste of time. Don't Take
this class required dedication. Must read material and take notes. Will do fine if you try and show up to class.
He is a rare example of a truly dedicated professor. He REALLY wants to help students learn. I learned a ton!
Great professor! Because of his class, I am majoring in Sociology! He really LOVES to teach!
ALL Soc100 students should try to take his class. he is an amazing teacher and teaches very well. a funny dude who loves to be involved with his community! he is ALWAYS AVAILABLE and is easy to talk to. not only is he understanding, but he sets his standards and expect the best!
The class was interesting, BUT if you want an A, you'll have to work really hard for it. There's a lot of readings, boring readings. Tests are mildly hard if you don't study precisely because there are random questions thrown in the tests. Overall, not a bad class, and the professor is a wonderful person.
Great Prof, fairly difficult class but this class really blows peoples' minds by the time the end of the semester rolls around. Great class to kick off ones college career! All and all, difficult yet amazing!
Dr. Jake is an amazing teacher. He keeps the class motivated and interested in what he's teaching. Attendance is mandatory!!! If you bring enthusiasm he reciprocates with amazing opportunities. For the midterm and final you HAVE to study. He's an easy-going and fun loving teacher. Go to his office hours! My fave teacher of all time!
Jake is by far my favorite professor at Cal State. His teachings are well-spread out by his use of personal anecdotes, textbook, articles, and film clips. Really easy to pay attention that class for he makes it easy too. He loves class participation so go for it, don't be shy! Highly recommended for all majors in need of Soc100.
Fun and interesting professor. However, the class requires dedication. There are pop quizzes, 2 papers, film analyses, midterm and a final. Be sure to read the chapters he assigns. If you at least put in effort, this class should not be too much of a hassle. He's an amazing teacher.
Dr Jake is an amazing professor, he makes class really interesting and encourages you to participate in lectures. Just keep up with chapter readings and study because its not an easy A, but it is a fun class!
Dr. Jake is the most passionate professor at CSULB. He really made me want to go to class and actually try hard to do well. He is super fair, nice, encouraging, and overall pretty dang awesome. Take his class!!!!
Very handsome and nice. He is very passionate about his profession. Very relatable and down to earth. Very cool professor.
He is a very passionate teacher that really cares about his students. He really makes the class go by fast with his funny stories/examples. He has an amazing personality and makes sociology a class I look forward to attending. Not only is he funny but he really makes you learn a lot in his class. I would definitely recommend him to anyone!
Dr. Wilson is the best professor I have ever had. I took his SOC 100 class, and because of him, am now a sociology major. He really cares about his students, is hilarious, and made me think in a whole new way. He is very fair and loves when students are participating in class. Awesome!!
I took Mr. Wilsons class for the learning alliance. he is very fun, I was always interested in his lectures and he helped me after class sometimes with the readings. very nice profesor, I hope I can take him again some day.
He is a amazing teacher. He made us work, but I know get it when it comes to theory. Yay for professor W!
Reguired to read the book, & study LIKE ANY OTHER COLLEGE CLASS, but fun teacher he explains facts in a different way so you can relate and understand. Attend class since he gives out pop-quizzes. And NEVER get behind on reading.
I always look forward to Dr.Jake's classes. He is very knowledgeable about sociology and society and is funny. I hope to take more classes with Profe. wilson.
Dr. Jake was a great professo he would give us advice on how to do well in school! YOU DO HAVE TO READ THE TEXTBOOK because he gives pop quizzes every other week on the chapters, this class is time consuming and it helps if you outline the chapters and if you do flashcards so you have to dedicate time to this class but his class is really fun!!
I took this class my first semester of college, I was interested in this subject somewhat when I started school , but throughout the semester learned a lot. He has pop quizzes but they are super easy, so you have to do the reading in the book. TAKE THIS CLASS... Dr. Jake has good good class discussions and this class is really easy if you read
Dr.Jake is an amazing professor. He is definately very passionate about what he teaches and is very involved with his students. he really just wants you to do well..2 fieldwork reports, 2 film analyses, & READING. Love the fact that he is so concerned for his students, incorporates life tips into his lectures, overall: AMAZING PROFESSOR!!
AWESOME PROFESSOR & CLASS!! but you MUST read textbook...6 quizzes, 2 exams, 2 papers, 2 film analysis. Quizzes are straight from the book so you can't be behind on your readings. His lectures are so fun and he gives you life lesson. Always willing to help students. Very friendly!! Class can be hard, but RECOMMEND HIM!!
Dr. Jake is a great professor and is really passionate about what he teaches and the students in his classes. He is more than willing to answer questions and help students out as much as he can. Pop quizzes really affect your grade so you have to keep up with the reading and make sure you understand concepts.
He is a really good professor. He has 6 pop quiz that are from the reading so make sure you're on top of your readings. 2 major test (Multiple Choice, Defining Terms, and 2 short Essay each), 2 papers, and 2 film analysis. This only hard because I was lacking big time, I suggest you to study/focus/attend class, it's fun but also challenging.
Dr. Wilson is an amazing professor. He made me think outside the box, was very helpful, and even gave me a pep talk when i became a bit overwhelmd. I really enjoy his lectures and he is a really funny, smart, and down to earth professor.
he is so GREAT,gives extra credit .. he makes sure he does w.e he can to get you to understand the material . IF I WERE YOU ID REALLY TAKE THIS CLASS YOU WONT REGRET IT !! trust me he's cool funny easy very undersanding he also lets you re-do papers that you didnt do so great on . EXTRA CREDIT !!! sure to pass as long as you have common sense
I took Professor wilson last semester. it was a very entertaining class. you really learn a lot about society's problems, and ways to improve the system. I hope to take this professor again at csulb (I just might, because I think I will be a soc minor thanks to professor wilson)
He is very interesting. You actually learn in this class and he makes it fun. Best teacher. You won't regret taking his class. There are quizzes but if you read they are not that hard. He is very approachable and cool.
Great professor. Always enthusiastic and teaches great. Knows what he is teaching about and makes class fun.
Dr. Jake is defintely one of the professors that are perceived as great and very knowledgable in my book. Very lenient on assignments if the class participates in class and lectures. He grades his papers very specifically and critically so that is a must to focus on. As for exams he asks very specific questions so study EVERYTHING in that book. 10 quizzes, 2 exams, 2 major papers, and 2 film analysis, not the easiest but if you study hard it's possible to get an A. Definitely an easy B.
This class was very tough, but the Dr. Jake is HANDS DOWN the best professor I have ever had. He is very dedicated and believes all of his students can get a passing grade if they TRY. LOVE HIM!
I learned a lot about theory this summer. Prof. Jake is a great teacher. So long as you read, study, and actually do some work, you will do fine. He is also very helpful with questions after classes.
Dr. Jake is a great professor, knows his stuff, makes class very interesting, and fun. A lot of reading, but he always wants to help us out. Very friendly. Awesome professor!
Dr. Jake is a very inspirational professor! I cannot wait to take another course with him next year! :) The class is a little challenging but as Jake always puts it, its not impossible. He encourages his students to do their very best and likes to help out any way he can. Its very interesting class. I encourage anyone to take this class. Awesome!
Dr. Jake is an amazing teacher and person. The class requires a lot of reading, but if you do the readings you'll be just fine. He will help you with pass the class, I highly recommend you go to his office hours. I guarantee you will not be disappointed in taking his class.
He made his own textbook and sells it for like $30 so that the students can keep the costs of books lower, which was really nice of him! He's a good teacher and has a lot of experiences to share. He's a hard grader for essays though and there's a LOT of reading. There's a midterm and final, 2 film analyses, and 2 essays.
He is the best! Very open minded professor. Really humble and that explains everything !(:
Dr. Jake is amazing he is clear during his lectures. He wants to make sure we all understand the material, there is a lot of reading and it is very interesting. He grades hard on essays but he only wants you to improve in the art of writing. I highly recommend this professor. If he taught classes that I needed for my major I'd be stoked.
I took my first online course with Dr. Jake. I was very surprised how great of a class it turned out to be. I learned so much. There is a lot of tasks to compete each week, and wasnt easy but I learned alot. He was very helpful with my writing issues. highly reccomend.
This professor is THE BEST! Literally I was happy to attend every class. He is so passionate in what he teaches, and is very kind. No homework, but there 3 PAPERS. Not so hard. YOU"LL SURVIVE! RECOMEND 100% :)Take him NOW!!
Dr. Jake is very INSPIRING. I procrastinated a lot while taking his class & I wish that I could've been more active. I failed my first exam but after going to see him, I passed my finals with an A. He encouraged me to try harder and he shared his own experiences that were similar to mine as a student. He is my mentor. Best professor ever.
He is such an icredible teacher. It is a tedious class just because the work load is kind of alot BUT every assignment is so interesting and truly worth it. I highly reccomend taking him. He really cares about his students. By far one of my favorite professors.
Prof Jake is simple AWESOME!! I absolutely loved his class(LBCC/PCC),highly recommend him!Only 2 essays, 3 tests and one project. Not only is he an great prof his a cutie too! Overall I really enjoyed his class he taught us so much about Sociology and life its self.He believed in all his students and was their for them!Take his class you'll love it
He does give a lot of work but it's all worth it. He's very chill, laid back and even gives you extra credit or takes off some work he gives you. Just try your hardest and you can achieve an A.
Dr. Jake is the BEST. I was so nervous about his class when I started, but he really made it interesting. His work load gave me tons of anxiety though. There's an online quiz every week, 2 final exam essays, and tons of more papers. The work is completely worth it and leaves you feeling satisfied with yourself
Dr.Jake was a great instructor.Sociology didn't particularly interest me but the lessons, in-class activities, and readings were very interesting.Great class that was taught well but there was too much work- LOTS of writing turned in online. Due dates were too close together, esp. during the finals week.Honestly, too much work for a 100 class.
He's a great professor and is very helpful to all his students and he makes sure to make you feel comfortable talking to him. The readings are way too long and is a hard grader on papers but he wants the best for students. This course is brand new so he was all over the place but it was an interesting class, take him if you don't mind reading a lot.
Dr. Jake is the best professor I have ever had at CSULB. I learned so much in this class. There isnt another professor that supports studenrts the way he does. This class will make you think in a whole new way about societal issues and inequality. Dr. jake is awesome!!!
Favorite class I've taken so far. Very good class, but there is a lot of work. Online quizzes almost every week, a few 500 word briefs, ten online discussions, film analysis, a book analysis, two essays for the midterm and final, each a thousand words, and a few extra credit assignments. A lot of work, but one of the best classes you'll ever take.
A very good professor. Extremely passionate about the subject and helpful when you ask for clarification. However, it's a very time-consuming class. There are weekly quizzes, briefs, and discussion posts so be prepared to write a lot. His class is very interesting though. Take him if you have the time.
If you do not like doing a lot of work then this class is not for you. Dr. Jake is kind and extremely helpful but the workload is stressful. Weekly online quizzes, five online 500word briefs, a midterm and final essay, one film analysis, and one book analysis. Be sure to ask for help because his graders are harsh.
He is a GREAT professor. There is a lot of reading and writing, so it is not an easy A. However, it is doable and he is more than willing to help you. If you love sociology, the workload will be interesting albeit time consuming. His online course (over the summer) consisted of chapter quizzes, weekly briefs, 2 written exams, 2 film/book analysis.
Seriously, this professor gives wayyy too much work for a 3 unit class. There is more work in this one class than my other 3 classes combined. It takes away from time for other papers/homework. The class is so incredibly interesting and he teaches very well, but it's an overload and I won't be taking his classes again.
Professor Alimahomed-Wilson is the individual who inspired me to switch my major to sociology. It was one of the best classes I took at CSULB. The work is a bit much for a 100 level class but it helps you to understand the concepts very well. He may be somewhat disorganized at times but he is overall very knowledgeable and approachable.
I took both of Dr. Wilson's online classes over the past two summers. They were so good. He requires a lot of work but I learned more in these classes than any others at CSULB. Prof J was always there to answer questions, help me with my essay, or guidance. Prof Jake is a professor who will inspire and encourage all students. best teacher!
This was an interesting class! There is A LOT of reading and writing involved, so if you aren't into a huge workload don't take this class. I took this class with 2 other online courses and I did well. But it was a lot of work and the other classes were much easier. But Jake is a great professor! and I learned a lot!
Very interesting class and extremely helpful Professor. A lot of reading and writing but nothing too overwhelming. Make sure to read the book!
amazing , inspirational, brings awareness , one grows as an individual
Dr. Jake always came to class with a positive attitude and eagerness to share more about the subject and himself. He was always open to class discussions and students' point of view and feedback. For being a 100-level class, the assignments were very lengthy and intricate. It was clear that you needed to EARN your grade in the classroom.
best class I have ever taken. Dr. J is truly inspirational, supportive, and is so passionate. He made our class a community. life changing experience. take soc 436
2nd time taking this proffessor and do not regret it! Most influential teacher ive ever taken and really wants to help you out and hear youre side of the story! You have to work really hard for youre grade but he offers many extra credit along the way and is there to help you! Greatest proffesor i hve taken so far!
Dr. Jake is overall an amazing professor. Class is easy and grading is straight forward. If you have a problem or just a bit more help, he is always there during office hours. He'll help you succeed in his class.
Professor Wilson is BEYOND amazing. His class is so interesting! Great guy all around and his wife Sabrina is also such a great professor. His class is a bit challenging but so worth it. You leave the semester with so much knowledge and like he says, "you'll hate the world at the end of my class".
This class is great. I remember thinking that Sociology will be a boring topic, but this professor makes it interesting and engaging! There is a lot of reading, but the open book online quizzes are 25 minutes long. Two essays for finals. You don't need to participate, but if you do all of your work and do them well, then you will get an easy A.
Thought I was going to hate this class, but turned out to love it and have a different outlook on life and what is happening in society. Online dissucuions and quizzes due every week, 2 essays for both mid term and final each, but if you are on top of things you'll do fine. Highly recommand having him as your professor.
Most of the work is delegated by week so it was not that hard. BEWARE OF ESSAYS! He grades really hard on it too. One complaint is that he gives no feedback on the essays you turn in. But he is approachable, so you will have to discuss with him personally on your specific issues.
He is a really good teacher that is passionate about sociology. He does give a lot of work but it's not too bad. He always postpones due dates and cares about his students. Just do the work to the best of your ability and you should do fine.
He was alright, nothing special. Take someone else if you can.
The worst part abou his class was the essays because he is a hard grader. Also I emailed him multiple times and i felt like he world ignore me. What i can say is i truly think he does care about his students. He makes the concepts really easy to comprehend. Visit his office hours maybe is the key.
Take this class if you want an easy B in sociology. You must work for an A. A lot of online work/quizzes and discussion boards almost every week. A lot of essays are also given but it's spread out. He is a HARD essay grader! Sometimes it doesn't make any sense to me. If I barely try on an essay, I get an A. When I try super hard, I get a B/C.
Jake is a great instructor. You can tell that he is very passionate about his job. However, this class is a lot of work for a 100 class. If you do all the work for the class, you'll definitely pass with a high B or A. Takes attendance every day. Gives a lot of extra credit opportunities.
Dr. Jake is great. I don't have anything negative to say about him whatsoever. He is so passionate about what he teaches and even more passionate about his students. The class workload is moderate but definitely manageable, especially if you have an interest in the subject. And go to his office hours! He's the best to chat with.
Dr. Jake is a great and passionate professor, but if you're looking for an easy 100 class this is not for you. Although the work is relatively easy, I've never had to do so much for a class before. It's ALL on beach board which is confusing if you're not used to using it a lot. Super interesting, but only take it if you're down for busy work.
The class was well layed out so you understood exactly what you needed to do each week. Where I felt it fell short was it felt like an exercise in how horrible white people are. The class was easy though so if your looking for an online Sociology class look into this one.
There was a lot of work that wasn't too hard just took time. There were a couple of group assignments, online discussions, and quizzes most weeks. He is a tough grader when it comes to essays. You can see that he loves teaching which made the class more fun. If I had to take a Soc100 class again I would take his.
You can find the PDF book online. You don't need it much. There are quizzes but you can use quilt and find most answers. It's an easy class, i enjoyed it and I recommend him.
EASY A. Everything is online basically, weekly quizzes, and discussions but they're pretty simple. He is very understanding, extended deadlines for midterms. Midterm and Final are easy take home essays. Big class, but its a pretty fun class overall. Theres a few extra credit opportunities. I would take a class w/ him again.
Took class online, and must say an "A" can be achieved if you're persistent with your effort. Teacher is inspirational, knows how to convey these sociological terms well to students. You will need the text-book for the essays (get the 2nd edition its cheap). Highly recommend this class and the teacher. Sociology is a favorite now!
What can I say? Best class offered here at Pierce ONLINE. Just get ready to do a lot of writing and sharing of your own opinion. This teacher is going to make you think, ideas like race being a social construct. Just prepare to get a new look at society! & The teacher himself is also very educated. If you work hard, you'll earn the grade deserved:)
Overall, a nice individual. He is very educated and passionate about the subjected. He even pushes back deadlines for some assignments. BUT BEWARE, THERE IS A LOT OF WORK IN HIS CLASS. For midterm, two (1,000 words) essays due the same day on the material he wants you to use. An outside project, film analysis, final essay(S), book analysis (?)...
Wilson a caring professor who genuinely values his students as people who have lives outside of school. Class-wise there is a LOT of work (not hard, just tedious) involved: group project, in-class participation, essay exams, online discussions/quizzes. He offers some EC. If you put in the time to do the work, the class is an easy A.
Professor Jake is amazing, his SOC100 class was fun and interesting mainly because of him. Although I will say there is a lot of learning that takes place mostly outside of class other than that his class is really fun and I am glad I had him.
Cool dude. Class wasn't difficult, but it was tedious (weekly quizzes, article readings, a group project). He offered extra credit and I highly suggest taking that opportunity because I passed the class with an 88.3% and I regret not doing some of the extra credit opportunities because of that haha. He's funny, and lectures are easy to understand.
Took this class my senior year for elective credit. Being a 100 level course I thought it would be a fun introduction to sociology. This class has so much unnecessary work its ridiculous. It was harder than some of my upper division classes. He's a nice guy but I began to hate the class because there were so many projects worth virtually nothing.
This is one of the best professors I've had. The reason for the grade was because his classes involved too much discussion that it was less of him lecturing. I've taken theory before and it's been discussion, but the professor restates the meaning. Expect to read in his class.
Dr. Jake is the best professor so ever had.
Super nice professor, but if you're planning on taking 16+ units on top of his class... don't do it. He gives a lot of work, discussion boards every week, quizzes every week, and a lot of articles to read. Articles are read and used in papers later on in the course. If you don't have a lot of time to sit down and focus on this class, don't take it
Jake Wilson truly cares about all things sociology, but course requirements slow him down. If it were up to him, he'd just rant all class about everything (he kinda does anyways) He has pointless online quizzes that all answers are found on quizlet and superficial discussions. His video or community service project is bogus. Essays are decent.
Dr. Jake is an amazing professor. He genuinely cares about his students and he is so passionate about what he does. No exams, just 4 essays, online quizzes every week, discussions every week, reading every week, and videos every week. If you are looking for a class to slack off in, this course is not for you, but I do recommend this class.
Definitely is passionate about what he's teaching so lectures are easy to follow and makes the main idea known. Essay exams are easy since he's very specific of what he's looking for (don't procrastinate though), and weekly readings + online quizzes are not that bad if you stay on top of them. Group project may be difficult if not started early.
Such a great professor, really cares about his student's success. This class was easy if you did the work. He doesn't give tests, only online quizzes and only makes you write 1-2 papers for midterm/final. Not a stressful class, highly recommend! Definitely need textbook.
Dr. Jake was an amazing professor. He was extremely passionate and inspirational, and also very generous with the grading. Participation is sort of mandatory and the online quizzes and discussions got tedious, and you have to write a few 1000 word papers, but definitely do-able. I liked him a lot.
His lectures are always interesting. Weekly quizzes and discussion posts and two 1,000 words essays that you have to do. Overall, you have to work hard to get a good grade.
Very work heavy for a GE class but manageable. Discussions and quizzes online every week. Participation points as well. He's very inspirational and willing to help. No tests, only a few essays but he does grade a bit difficult on them. He inputs assignments very late even though he has 2 TA's. His TA's will rarely help so use his office hours.
He motivates the students from his nontraditional educational journey. Readings are heavy and he has reading checks. I suggest planning the week to read little by little. Video analysis which he makes us write 2 page reflection paper. One group film project not too bad as long as you try. Just the midterm & final is quite tedious so beware.
He was the best professor Ive had so far. Its only my first semester and I thought Id fail miserably but he was always open to what he was expecting out of essays and was super progressive as far as equality
Dr. Jake is inspirational and is always open to people's thoughts and ideas. Lots of reading every week with weekly quizzes and discussions. One midterm and final based on readings throughout the semester. Two additional papers and a group project. Lots of work but content is very interesting.
Dr. Jake is my favorite all time prof at CUSLB. His passion and dedication to students is inspiring. I learned a ton in his class and worked hard, but totally worth it. Dr. jake is one of the profs you will stay in touch with. also meet with him in his office hours, he helped me out a ton with career advice and pep talks
I was too stressed in this class tbh. I wanted to get hit by the bus several times throughout the semester because I was that stressed. He makes it seem like we are UC students, and while that is a compliment, it is detrimental to people with mental health issues and people who chose CSU. Does not give study guide for exams, just read his readings
Dr. Jake is a nice guy, however, taking his class is the equivalent of a person who is not in shape doing a marathon. He makes his midterm and exam based on sole readings, so read everything. Tedious reading checks, a film paper, theory paper, and a film project. He gives no study guides, hence the analogy of the marathon runner not being in shape.
Your quizzes and test are on certain chapters at a time. When reading highlight the definitions, the conflict and order theorist and their stance on issues, and theories that come up. Go over your quizzes, and chapters again and their statistics information. 2 Weekly easy quizzes due Mon & Wed (online)2 papers, 3 test, a final, 1 group film project
Dr Jake is passionate about sociology and he does "panel's" to help make the class engaging and fun. He recently has redesigned this course (because of past cheating) it now consist of 2 Weekly easy quizzes (online),2 papers(1 film essay and a book response), 3 test, a final, 1 group film project. Overall easy class as long as you keep up.
His exams are pulled straight from the online textbook, so some questions ask ridiculously small details from the book such as specific statistics that are mentioned once. But, if you read and take notes on every chapter you'll be fine. His essays/group project instructions aren't really clear. He is really passionate and caring though.
Nice professor but really if you are not a good test taker, avoid. Lectures are primarily discussion. Reading is heavy so plan ahead. He has reading checks, the midterm, final, film project. So your choice if you take him. Good luck because honestly I felt like I was in a torment in this class.
Professor Jake is amazing. The work is as clear as water. Just read! I learned a lot within 4 weeks. Definetely recommend to anyone.
Honestly one of the best professors at CSULB. I learned so much from this class because of the diverse readings and class discussions. This class is not difficult if you go to class & complete assignments on time. If you miss class, you miss instructions for papers, watching movies that you have to write about later, and participation points.
Dr Jake has been my best professor so far. Really passionate about Sociology, and makes his lectures really engaging. Participation is really important during lectures. Chapter Test and quizzes every week using the online textbook. Test questions are pulled from online tests and quizzes for the most part. Definitely one of my favorite classes.
He's a nice guy but expects WAY too much from you. Doesn't seem to take into account that you have other classes, a job, and personal life problems. 3 big papers, weekly quizzes, huge group project, big midterm and final exam essays. If you take this class, make sure you don't have any other classes or life struggles that need attention.
TIME MANAGEMENT! i had a job/tough classes so it was hard to keep up with REVEL (online textbook) hw/tests, it's a good chunk of your grade so keep up. exams are detailed n come from the txtbook, end of chapter summaries are helpful when studying. just do your work and participate in lectures, ez to pass w/ a C. it's doable & he does care about u
He doesnt really like to lecture. Hes really cool and supportive. His test will kill you. You need to study everything (All the stats and videos). Essays/projects are a lot, a little too much for it being a 100 level class. Make sure to attend review sessions before test, really help when taking exam. He offers lots of Extra Credit, do them all!
Read, listen take notes. The test are easy, and if you read and follow along.. it will not be surprise. I appreciate his respectfulness, and also this class changed my perspective for the better. Take it, you will not regret it.
He seems really nice and caring but he asks way too much from you for a beginning class. He is not a good teacher at all, had to retake this class, I took another professor and he is WWAAAYYY better. Don't take this guy!
I am writing this before I even finish the semester because I am so happy to have ever taken this class. Professor Wilson is truly the most respectful, caring, and knowledgeable professor I have come across while attending CSULB. You have to put in the work for sure, but if you do, the class is amazing, and your hard work WILL be acknowledged! :)
Typical week workload: 2-3 readings w/learning activities, short quiz, discussion post + replies. 3 short papers on readings, 1 big midterm essay, and final essay. He dropped our group project bc of COVID-19 and gave us all A+ instead! Literally THE MOST UNDERSTANDING, accommodating prof I've had in 4 years. Tough class, but worth it with HIM!
When I first signed up for this class I was super nervous because of what this site had to say about him, however, I have learned more from this class about our environment and how it is tied to everything I've learned in sociology. The class is time-consuming, about 6-8 hours a week, but if you're focused and read the material you will be perfect!
He made sociology such an interesting topic and even though we had to read the textbook for online quizzes, it was interesting to talk about them in class, beyond just taking notes in the textbook. Participation matters and counts toward attendance. Tests ask general and VERY specific questions from the textbook so make sure to read.
Professor Wilson is such an incredible professor. He is so passionate on the topic and so caring of his students. His class does have a lot of readings but they are interesting and completely related to his lectures. His class is not an easy A but as long as you are giving it your best you're fine. There's so much to learn from this class, take it!
I got to say this class for me was life changing. I went in dreading it and I got to say Professor Wilson's passion, and dedication to students is inspiring. I learned a ton in his class and I worked so hard, but it was definitely worth it. During these hard times he went above and beyond to make sure he was there to be able to help me.
He's an awesome professor. He understands students have lives outside of this class although he does assign a ton of reading. He makes you work for the A for sure. The content is really amazing, he's really great and I suggest everyone to take a class with him especially soc 410. LOTS OF READING! but it's interesting and you can feel his passion
Dr. Wilson does a great job at making sociology engaging and interesting through discussion posts and reading assignments. Being an asynchronous class, all you had to do was complete the assignments and reading each week to receive credit. He does give you a lot of reading to do but most of it was interesting. I would definitely retake his class!
honestly, he wasn't super flexible or empathetic, but the class was not that bad. he is not really a tough grader, as long as you do your work you will be fine. im sure hes better in person as well
Dr. Wilson is AMAZING! Super supportive of his students & gives amazing lectures, even online & asynch. Very straightforward with his grading criteria and assignments are promptly returned. Learned so much in his class that it inspired me to pursue the CSULB sociology honors program! Definitely take Dr. Wilson if you have the chance!
I took the 8 week session, textbook is on Pearson online and has quizzes integrated in. Final is a book analysis essay. Great lectures! Highly recommend.
Such a great professor. Gives really good feedback on assignments. All the work is made very clear, and in accordance with the syllabus. I really enjoyed the lectures he gave, with parts of them being interactive. I also enjoyed the books and articles. I would definitely recommend taking his classes.
Amazing professor. Learned so much in his lectures. Homework is easy and readings are super interesting. Would love to take another class with him. 10/10 recommend.
Awesome Professor and guy in general. Will meet with you to hear your concerns and help you out anyway he can.
AMAZING and passionate professor. you can tell he's knowledgeable in the field and he's so encouraging when giving feedback on your work. you have to put effort into your work to get a good grade and hard work pays off. favorite online course ever, now I want to change my major entirely! if you're wondering if you should take him - DO IT!
Book is necessary for quizzes/essays. He's very passionate about what he teaches and you learn so much. There is a group project, weekly quizzes/discussions, and a couple essays. He would extend our deadlines if we needed to and even dropped one of the essays. Such an amazing class, I highly recommend taking it with him.
It's clear that professor Wilson is very passionate in what he teaches. The class is very interesting! There's usually a quiz or discussion post once a week. There were a few papers but he dropped one of them and made the final paper requirement shorter. He's a very nice professor so I'd recommend. Only other thing is that there's a lot of reading.
An AMAAZING professor!!! Very knowledgeable, super caring, and wants his students to excel! As a sociology major, when he said 'let's do directed studies together' and encouraged me to think about getting involved, that was out-of-this-world peak sincerity and genuine demand to see me be the best I can be. Take him, or else lol
Professor jake is very passionate of sociology but the readings he assigns are a lot for a week. Be prepared to read many articles and learning activities. There are a few essays to complete and group assignment. The quizzes can be hard because they are worded specifically from the readings. Overall, he is good professor but get ready to work.
King. I love this man's passion. I really learned a lot in his class.
I learned a lot from the content of this class because I love environmental work, but be ready to read A LOT every week. A lot of writing, weekly discussion posts, essays, written midterm, group project, and a written final. Professor Wilson is very caring and passionate about his work, but the number of articles and readings was too much.
He's very caring and understanding when it comes to assignments. He isn't a tough grader and cares about his students well being. There's lots of reading though, but the essays aren't hard at all, just time consuming. The exam mainly focuses on reading so read all his material in order to get a good grade, but overall I would take him again!
Professor Wilson is super passionate about the material. Lots of reading, but essays are manageable. Quizzes can be tricky - focus on the readings. Unstuck AI helped me prep efficiently. Overall, recommended if you're willing to put in the work.
There's a discussion and quiz due every week. Easy grader. I recommend taking his class!
This is more of a rating for the course, not the professor. TBH, I wouldn't recommend taking an online course if you don't have to. A lot of the work was fairly easy, but it just felt like busy work the whole semester. If you're in college to learn and enrich your life, take a different sociology course.
He's pretty flexible with deadlines. His lectures and class material were straightforward but really interesting because he breaks things down pretty organized. He also cares about his students and wants everyone to succeed. #W Professor.
Professor loves to boast about a student who he wrote a paper with and that kids only cares about bragging about his accomplishments. Take him if u want to be compared by that kid.
