Met this professor at USC before he went to UofA. In all seriousness, this is the best professor I have had in my life. Not only was he clear and helpful, but extremely funny. Made the entire learning experience a joy. Will help anyone at office hours with anything. Price of admission: one tea bag of Earl Grey!
I completely agree with what the other person said. Jake is funny, extremely knowledgeable, brilliant, and THOROUGH! It won't be easy but it won't be like any other class you've taken, either. And guaranteed you will learn more than 2 of your other undergrad courses combined!

Dr. 'Jake' is marvelous! He knows a complex topic VERY, VERY well. And believe me - Personality is COMPLEX. I am not the average 18 y.o. U/Graduate. I've been around for awhile. Jacobs is GOOD! Even after hours he is willing to talk Personality - and with a smile as well.
My gosh, i took this class twice. I failed the first time becos of his jumble rule(making up exams). I tell you what the second time around, I learnt more than average, about myself and my surroundings-very enlightened. JAKE is into what ever he does and knows his stuff. Much appreciated class, i think everyone should take this class.
He was an interesting teacher. But the way he taught the class was pretty confusing.
Great teaching ability! Knows his stuff. I learned a great deal of information from the two classes I took with this instructor. I would recommend him to those individuals that are seriously considering pursuing a career in psychology. He can be very helpful in setting you up for success!
Jake is a wonderful teacher. I recommend everyone take at least one of his classes.
Get ready for the Automaton Theory - you will never see science the same way again. After taking two of Dr. Jacobs classes, I feel well prepared for a career as a scientist.
A no holds bar psych class taught by a professor that has the knowledge, experience and balls to give it to you straight. I guarantee you won't be disappointed and you WILL learn something.
Jake is the grooviest professor. He takes psyc in a manner that will blow you away, and goes deeper than the text allows. His ethics are outstanding and he is fair to those that want to learn about this field. You can reach him for help if desired. Serious, yet cool as it gets. Take this class, as you'll leave with the reality of psyc. Exlnt!
If you are afraid of thinking or being put on the spot dont take Jake. Other than that I would say he is about the best Prof I have ever had. Not easy, but fair. Serious, but will meet you at a bar to discuss his lectures. I give him my highest recommendation.
The material in this class was presented in such a way that every class meeting was interesting and educational. This class was awesome! Probably the best class of my college education!
Research methods is known for being a reasonably simple psychology requirement. However if you have heard from friends who have taken Delaney for this class that it is easy, you are in for a rude awakening! Professor Jacobs' version of this class is on a whole different level! Class is not required but if you miss one, good luck!
He is way to broad and confusing. Jumps around in lectures and the final exam is pointless. I learned far more in my lab instead of the class. He claims there is a connection between the lab and class and the books, but it is pretty hard to understand, even from attending all lectures. The quizzes are hard and too much information to know at once.
Jake is an ethical and passionate instructor. He is witty, real, understanding and patient. He works extremely hard in conveying his difficult concepts into comprehensive understanding, and always has time for students that desire one on one time. He is groovy as they come. I would recommend him to everyone.
Exceptional instructor. Outstanding class.
If you're willing to put the time and effort into the class it is definitely worth it. If you miss a class or don't do the reading you'll get lost pretty fast. Lectures are fast paced and the reading can be lengthy but Jake is one of the best teachers I've had so far. Not a typical research methods course!
Jake was an amazing teacher and I know at times it was a little tough, Jake always had a way of explaining things! Thanks Jake!
gets his quiz questions on the book from the summaries!!!!
This class requires a lot of time and a lot of reading! He can be very hard to understand sometimes and is very radical. Good luck to you...
Jake is great. Just for the heads up, there are quizzes every other week on the material and class and the material in the books so it is crucial that you read!! Jake makes an otherwise dull subject shine with importance. He was extremely helpful outside of class and it is highly recommended to utilize his multiple office hours.
jake is a great teacher, but this is a difficult class. he lectures quickly and is kind of all over the place, so bring your computer and a recorder. quizzes are broad, but study the objectives and do the readings. final can really boost your grade, so start early. Jake LOVES to help, so take advantage of his office hours. really great guy...but yo
Most interesting class I've ever taken. Will change the way you think! Awesome class!!!
Jake really challenges the way you think about the world. His quizzes are ok as long as you read the book and show up to lecture. I realy enjoyed his class and how passionate he was about everything.
great class, very interesting but pretty hard. READ EVERY CHAPTER, EVERY WEEK! There are quizzes every other week that you definietly need to study pretty hard for.
PLEASE TAKE THIS CLASS WITH DELANY or you will have a hard time keeping up Do all of the readings 2 times
Interesting and intriguing. This is probably the most I have ever learned in a class before. Jake moves through his lectures quickly but somehow it all works. Highly recommended: Just be ready to work.
Lots of reading and it is recommended that you attend class as the lectures are not posted. Class material is different than what most would expect, somewhat difficult to grasp. Must stay on top of lectures but Jake is a great teacher and always available to help out if confused!
good!
This isn't one of those classes you can ignore. If you want a decent grade, you HAVE TO go to lecture and you HAVE TO do the reading. Material isn't too tough, as long as you apply yourself. Jake is very passionate about this stuff, and has a no B.S. manner, but don't be fooled! He is really very nice and always willing to help.
The class seems hard at first glance and you might hate Jake initially but he is actually a really nice and easy going guy. The class was not easy but it was worth while and I enjoyed it.
Jake is probably the best teacher you will find on campus. He's very helpful and willing to do whatever he can for you. Be warned, if you cannot handle discussions relating to sex, alcohol or drug use don't take this class. He uses these a lot to make examples that are easier for us to understand. If you love Psychology this is the class for you
You have to work in this class, but it is definitely rewarding. I Liked this class i recommend it.
He has an unconventional way of delivering the lectures but they work!!! It keeps an otherwise boring class interesting and enjoyable. This is not just a kick back class; you will have to work but it is totally worth it in the end. Plus, Professor Jake is always willing to work with you if you are having trouble in the class. He's really awesome!
DON'T DO IT. If you can avoid it go for it. It's a pain. I studied my butt off and ended up with a D. COME ON! I'm an average B student in ALL of my science classes. There's a lot of useless readings. If there was another, then go for them.
Best class I have ever had...hard:yes...lot of work: yes...lots to read: yes..but it's totally worth it. I can say that all my stress and hard work was worth it at the end. I'm satisfied with everything I learned cuz it tought me to be a skeptic and a critical thinker...Jake is awesome he's always there to help you when you don't get the material.
He has a tendency to brute force the topics he covers so it is hard not to be able to remember something about the points. As far as styles of teaching are to be discussed, it reminds me of a lecture I had about how the the fellows over in Cambridge instruct courses. The method he uses in lecture leave his testing style fairly simple.
He definitely made research methods interesting for me. His lectures are very useful and full of information. Prepare to read lots and take good notes in class.
you'll work hard and have fun. he's willing to work with you until you understand the information. he's easy to talk to, understand, and is an overall wonderful professor and great guy.
I did not like this class at all. Jake is a really nice guy and helpful, but seriously, sometimes it feels like he just makes his course material up. Really frustrating if you question the material at all, because it seems to have no background.
If you want a class that you get an "A" in with minimal effort, this class is not for you. But if you love learning, challenges, and interesting (oftentimes unorthodox :P) lectures, than Methods 290 with Jacobs is for you! Jacobs really cares about his students, and tries his hardest to make material understandable. Reading and attendance required!
Jake is easy to understand and makes class interesting. He is very approachable and wants you to do well in his class. He is always willing to help.
Jake is a fantastic professor. Probably the best class I've taken at the UA so far -- I learned a tremendous amount. The class isn't that easy though -- read the books, don't miss lectures and take good notes. The final exam is terrible, as well - you should probably start preparing for it at least a month before the day of the final. Recommended!
Prepare to have your beliefs abrasively attacked and your feelings hurt a lot but don't let that discourage you. Also, there's a quiz every other week (all short answer) and an essay final. This course gives you the tools to understand and be successful in the real world. I'm not thrilled with my grade but I'm glad I took Jake's course.
Jake is pretty cool. Like any college course, you have to go to class, do the readings, and study your ass off, so nothing new here. The material is a little abstract, but go in there with an open mind. Find a study group if you can to. Overall, I enjoyed it.
The Lecture: He makes it easy to take notes. If he repeats something, it better be in your notes. Don't miss class. The Books: Read them and do the questions at the back of Leary. Know the importance of each section in Stanovich. The Quizzes: Be able to answer his LO/LO questions. The Final: Be working on it throughout the semester.
This class teaches you how to critically think. I learned more from Jake than I have in my entire first year of college. Answer the questions in the book for the quizzes and always be on top of your studying and reading. Don't be afraid to go and argue a grade because; he wants you to come and see him! Take this class with an open mind and enjoy!
One of the best! Jake teaches you how to see the world differently and to think critically about choices you will make. Do not think this is one of those mass psych lectures you never have to go to. Buy a recorder and read the books (Leary summary, Stanovich review questions). And have fun! An open mind is a requirement for success in this class.
Jake is very nice, and you will learn a lot in his class. However, it is among the most difficult courses I've taken at UofA. His lectures go EXTREMELY fast, if you space out for one second you will be lost instantly. It is a requisite for all psych majors, so just do your best, go to office hours, and bring a recorder
Some of the stuff he says is so crazy, and I was pretty doubtful after the first few lectures BUT I actually really liked this class. I really feel like I learned something useful, unlike most classes. PREPARE YOURSELF: he makes you work. You have to read, and you have to know what you're talking about. Worth it. Plus he's a pretty nice guy.
He's the only teacher that teaches Methods at UA so be ready to work. His lectures go super fast, you have to be present and you have to pay attention. He posts lecture objectives online before class: PRINT THEM AND BRING TO CLASS. They will help focus your notes. Don't wait until the last minute to do readings. It's intimidating, but a good class.
I loved this class! I had no interest in research and methods and was dreading having to take it. However, Jake proved to be an entertaining guy and he made the topic interesting. He teaches you how to see the world in a different way. It was the hardest psyc class that I have taken, and I appreciated how it challenged me.
Never thought I would actually like this class, and it was all because of Jacobs. Best teacher I've had at Arizona so far.
Great Teacher! The class in not the easiest but you can always argue for higher points which usually works or do extra credit. The beast of a final is the only thing to really be worried about. He's fun, entertaining and I would definitely take another class with him!
HORRIBLE PROFESSOR!! I think he is kind of confused because he seems to thinks it is a philosophy class. The quizzes are ok but the final is ridiculous! You write like a 7 page paper and then MEMORIZE it!! Wow Jake, I really learned a lot by memorizing a paper, thanks. And he swears like a sailor! SO unnecessary and a waste of time!
Be ready for a cumulative final and don't wait till the last minute or you will be sorry!
He can be intimidating, but he's overall a really great professor. You'll have to keep up with the lectures, and really study the whole time otherwise you'll be a goner!!!
Oh goodness! He is a very intimidating man. His lectures are intense and there is a ton of reading required to prepare for the quizzes (don't let the first one fool you!). I enjoyed most days but there were some times I wished he would think about what he was saying...
This is a very hard class! But it's worth it! The things you will learn are an absolute must if you are going into research. Plus, with life in general. He teaches you to think critically and with an open mind. He really is a nice guy, hysterical and brilliant. Take his class!!
Jake is a very charismatic professor. You MUST bring your laptop or a tape recorder to class if you want to have complete notes. A notebook and pen will not suffice... he talks way too fast. There is a quiz every other week which requires extensive studying. The final is: write a paper including everything you learned in the class and memorize it!
Jake would be please, or at least somewhat amused, to know that I understand the material well enough to flirt with my girlfriend with it, and vice versa. Incredible nerdiness aside, this was a great course; challenging yes, but well worth it. Do not expect a walk in the park, and for god's sake choose your final paper writing partners carefully.
Hated him. He says the F word almost every lecture. Thinks he's God's gift to psychology. His lectures are incomprehensible, he repeats himself 5 thousand times about useless crap. And best of all, he's the only teacher of this god awful psych prerequisite.
The best teacher i've ever had in all my experience through school. People complain about this class cuz they are lazy. SOo, no offense, but if you can't "handle" this class, i have no idea how you "handle" life in general. Life gave you lemons, make the darn* lemonade! :)
I feel this is the class that required the most studying through my three years here at the University of Arizona.
Instructor sometimes hard to get in contact with. Is either very interested in student learning, or withdraws completely. A bit odd, but, great perspective, and a very brilliant mind.
Jake is really cool and patient with ideas that are pretty abstract. I'd take his class again, which I probaly will cause I think I failed. ^.^
Jake is an interesting professor. I have never learned so much information that required so much studying and memorizing than in any of my other classes. Although tough class, definitely worth it. He may seemed hard to reach but when you make the effort he helps you to no end. I was in his office twice (if not thrice) a week. Go to office hours!
BRILLIANT GUY, USEFUL CLASS
Jake is great, really nice guy. Has a passion for teaching. He has a different style though than any other professor i know. Important to go to all lectures, take notes, and READ! read the summaries of the chapters very helpful on quizzes to show main points of the chapter. This class is time consuming and not easy but go to office hours!
Research Methods is a hard class. That being said, it is very managable if you do all of your work. Jake is an animated and engaging lecturer. He does an impressive job of making difficult information significantly easier to understand. I left this class with knowledge that is relevant to my major and education as well as my every day life.
Jake's class was interesting to say the least. He tends to ramble. It's a lot of work. You must do the readings to pass the quizzes. The final was'nt hard for me, but I have a great memory. Now, was it useful? No. It is never useful to just memorize something. I learned nothing from the final, except that I have a good memory (for a 7 page paper).

Jacobs will flip your perspective. Contrary to his hard edged lectures, he wants you to think, and become a scientific critical thinker. There is a method to his madness. Jacobs will make you excel in a field he deeply cares about. He cares about the next generation of Psychologists. Jacobs is for Cats who want to Rep Hard.
He's the Singer, you're the drummer, rock out or don't. He leads and you follow. Don't miss a beat and read the lines, you'll rock out. Really, Jacobs reps you to be a rocker Psychologist. He's seen too many Cats Fall. If you take his class and mad read and rep the Method to the Madness, but you will learn. He Cares.
If you want to think rather than drink on ease, flip this Cat mad Cheese. Come correct critical think Jacobs works for your Fees. Hard edged polished like a Mad Prof Cat, Jacobs brings every Lecture to Style like A-rod at Bat. Become a Crit Thinker, read, write, and ask.
this class was definitely one of my harder ones but it was a good class. he kept my attention all semester. it was kinda stressful but i'm really glad i took it.
Jake is really scary at first but once you go to his office hours you realize he's actually a cool guy. Fight quiz scores because it really works. I fought back points on every quiz. Bring your final in a few weeks before the final day. Test questions are always main pts from readings and the objectives.
This is the class you think of when you see college classrooms on t.v. 500+ students listening to a lecture and rambling down what's important. It's difficult, but once you make it you feel like you have accomplished something BIG. Make sure to go to class, and also go see preceptors or Jake about confusing topics.
Jake is a very sarcastic guy but that is what makes the class interesting. The class is difficult and you need to do all the readings and go to class. If you see him or preceptors regularly and keep up with everything, the class is fine. You will absolutely not do well if you miss class or slack off.
a truly great teacher, because unlike most teachers; he doesnt just spit out info and expect you to memorize it... he wants you to think. a really interesting class, one that really keeps your attention.
The 1st day of class I thought Jake was VERY intimidating- after getting to know him he's like a teddy bear! He's a great teacher who won't sugar coat things; he tells it like it is. His sarcasm is humorous, and his bluntness help decrease the stress of the workload. You MUST go to class and you MUST read- it not you're doomed.
Solid Instructor.
The class messes with your head if you start to believe in it. But Jake keeps it interesting and really wants to make sure that you got everything down pat. Bi-weekly quizzes are a "dirty trick" to get you to do your readings, so read the books.
He is very hard, but extremely informative and eye-opening. If you give a crap about the field of psychology this class is HIGHLY recommended! Don't take this class if you are not sure about your major. He will kick you butt but you will learn sooooo much. The highlight of my semester.
HE makes you intrested in the material and uses great examples.
Jake is one of the most interesting teachers on campus. The class is hard and you have to work consistently throughout the year. Start for the final early, if you put it off it is much harder. Read each chapter and do the questions for Leary before each quiz. If you do well on the quizzes the final isn't as scary.STUDY! One of the best classes
The quizzes aren't the easiest and memorizing the final isn't fun; but it's worth it, if you go and listen you'll learn more than other classes.
Jake is an absolutely amazing professor. Some people don't get his humor but he is by far the best professor I have ever had at the UA. attend class and read religiously and go to office hours and you'll get an A and gain an incredible amount of knowledge. Get to know Jake...he's amazing!! This WILL become your favorite class. Thats all :)
Always keeps lectures interesting. Class does challenge you to think, make sure you do your readings and stay on top of it. Over all I enjoyed Jake as a professor.
Great class to take. Helps with a better understanding in other Stats coures. Lectures are boring, however what lecture isn't. Go see Dr. Jake for help, he has an open door policy, don't be afraid of him. The Preceptors and TA's are helpful too.
Very pivotal class 4 psych. What U put in will be what U get out of it (knowledge & the grade). Read Stanovich weekly & do the ch. summary Q.s 4 Leary. Go 2 Jake's office hours. It's important whose hands U shake & his is 1 of those. Start preparing for final 3-4 weeks in advance- you will beat the 2 hour office hour lines. Overall rewarding class
Jake is a little intimidating at first, but his lectures are great and very interesting. Lot of quizzes and reading but all of it is pretty interesting. Go to all of the classes!
Jake is a great teacher! He has a very great sense of humor and keeps his lectures as interesting as he can with the information he must teach. The class takes alot of work but it is not difficult as long as you put in the time. If you are motivated to get work done, you will be fine. Jake is probably one of the better teachers at the UofA!
Jake is probably one of the most passionate professors you will meet. To pass his class, you must be willing to put in a tremendous amount of effort by reading the books, visiting preceptors, memorizing a lot, and working very hard on the final. It will all be worthwhile in advancing your knowledge about psychology and about life itself.
Jake is by far one of the best professors at the U of A. He really wants you to learn his material and gives his students every opportunity available for extra help. The class is difficult and does require a lot of work and time. Reading the textbooks is essential in passing the quizzes.
This class is challenging but as someone who has absolutely zero interest in research, this class helped to give me a well-rounded understanding of Research Methods. Though this class is, rightfully, tougher than other classes, Jake really makes the class interesting & easy (assuming you don't slack off) -- especially considering the dull material.
If you have no interest in Research then the class is boring and it's hard to pay attention. You have to read the readings and attend all lectures if you want to do well on the quizzes. Don't be intimidated by Jake, argue for more pts if you get a bad grade. Jake really cares about his students he wants you to pass so do him a favor and don't fail
Jake scared the crap out of me on the first day. However, this was one of the best classes I've ever taken at the U of A. I learned an incredible amount and actually found the information useful and interesting, which I never though I would say! Jake is extremely intelligent and a wonderful person. Work hard, read the books and you'll get an A.
When I first read these reviews, I was scared, but after taking the class, I can safely say Jake is one of the best teachers at the U of A. Is it a difficult? Somewhat. Do you have to go to class and read the book. YES. It's college though, let's be realistic. Jake makes a seemingly dull topic INTERESTING. If you wanna learn, take this class.
Please learn from my comment here. I failed. I failed because I am the shy type who never went to office hours, and never argued for quiz points. Jake is intimidating but is there to help everyone. Read the book!!!!! You must, and g to every class. I went to every class took 68 pages of word document notes.....but just go to preceptors and jake
Jake is the most brilliant professor I have ever had. You just have to get to know him. GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS AND ARGUE FOR EVERY POINT! He really is there to help you. Bring your final into him early and have it corrected so you can get an A. Otherwise, you will probably fail. Best of luck to the hardest but most interesting class I've taken here
This may not be the easiest class you ever had, but Jake makes everything crystal clear... trust me. He repeats everything while making a chopping motion with his hand. Just make sure to study for all the quizzes. If you cannot study you will not pass. And get help on your final story before it's due, just so you include everything.
Great class, challenging material, knowledgeable professor! Help is available when you need it... and you WILL need it.
This course is now a requirement. Went to all lectures and still had a rough time with quizzes. The information for each quiz is a lot and the quiz is only 10 questions. So you better hope that in all the material you studied one of the questions will be in there. He is an intimidating professor, in my experience he is not very welcoming. Boo
This was one of the best classes I've taken at U of A! Make sure you always do all the readings and attend class, they are essential. An A is very possible! Jake is a great professor and he really cares about your well being. Go into preceptors and Jake, they WILL help!! Also, I'd recommend taking a lap top to lectures because Jake does talk FAST!!
Jake is so cool. He's willing to help you over a beer or just chat in his office. At first he seems very intimidating but I found his teaching style fast pace, yet effective. If you're a hard worker and do the assigned readings and visit him several times in his office until the final is an A paper, you'll be just fine.
He seems to relish his students loving or hating him. Come to class, take notes, study the outline he provides for quizzes. Get started on the final early, seriously don't wait. At the end of the semester there was a 3 hour wait to get into his office hours
really interesting class, but make sure you keep up with your reading!
Hey I am not hear to say what a great guy he is or what a jerk he is. Just here to tell you what to expect. Read two textbooks on your own, take great lecture notes. So out of one book expect to memorize about 45 questions to be asked 3. I say memorize beccasue there is not time to understand the material. Have fun.
An engaging lecturer who would be better if he left his ego, sensationalism, and foul language at the door. He seems more interested in getting a rise out of people and saying "shocking" things rather than actually teaching. I found him impatient and disinterested when I went to office hours. The final was ridiculous.
Wonderful professor who challenges students to think critically. At first I found the class intimidating but adapted and learned to stay on top of readings. Doing well on the final is very possible as long as you work hard and make the effort. If you have a tough courseload make sure to manage your time wisely! Overall a very good experience!
This professor truely cares about the field of psychology and that is why he insists on students undestanding the material. He will make this course your full-time job, and likely cause you to have nightmares all semester, but in my opinion what I learned is worth the hassle.
Jake tackles challenging topics, but they are very thought provoking and interesting. He is one of few teachers at U of A who holds his students accountable for the material. You do have to do the work, but its worth it. I used to attend a highly ranked private university and Jake teaches classes that are on that level (most UA classes aren't).
This class is ridiculous I know straight A students that struggle to get a "C" in this class. Jakes a horrible teacher & does nothing to help you understand the info. The books he makes you MEMORIZE are boring & his lectures are confusing & long. Be prepared to struggle and get no help, even the ta's don't understand the info being "taught".
if you're looking for an easy a,b, or c... this isnt the class foryou.. take it at pima. you have to do a lot of work...reading every night and memorizing and going thru his lectures.. if ur not preparred for that.. ur going to waste ur time and money and end up gro-ing it
This undergraduate honors course was as difficult as a very engaging graduate course. Professor Jacobs is a very gracious teacher and grader but if you fail to internalize all of the material in this course you will not be able to keep up. Overall, I learned way more than usual in this course.
Terrible! I can't even imagine where all of these great comments are coming from! I am an A student and I barely got a C in his class! It is a shame that you can take a class and get a professor that has little regard for the fact he is there to teach you~ not take for granted that you are learning and do not already know the material!
You must attend class and take notes, he randomly chooses a name at the beginning of each class to summarize the last lecture, if you're not there you get a 0/100 for a quiz grade. Overall if you study and read the material you should be able to pull a B. The final is a group effort CHOOSE A GOOD GROUP.
He tells you exactly what to expect on the first day of class like every professor does, but what he says is 100% right on. It's a hard course, but if you go to class and study regularly you can get a B or an A while learning an exceptional amount.
This class was not easy by any means. The quizzes are very difficult but Jake will make himself available for any questions you may have. The preceptors are worthless. Overall the class was very informative, I loved it! The final was a piece of cake with an outline, so make sure you do one.
This has been my favorite class and professor yet. He makes a potentially dull subject really interesting and really teaches you how to think critically. Take any oppurtunities he offers you...preceptors, office hours etc and you'll be fine. He's a really nice and interesting guy, go into office hours and you'll see for yourself. Don't be afraid :)
When I first read the syllabus and heard him lecture about what a hard professor he was and how much work passing the class would be, I was very nervous. In the end, the class was a lot of work but he presents the material and the assignments in a way that is manigible. Liked him, depsite senioritis. He is strict but fair.
Gives you the option to appeal questions on quizzes but denies them rather than actually looking at them, regardless of whether you are correct in your answer or not. Extremely arrogant, has obvious favorites even in a class of 300 people.
He doesn't call people out in class anymore. There's a quiz every week online about the reading and lectures. Have to go to class cuz he doesn't post lecture slides. Pick a good group to take the quizzes with. Final is a group essay and he will help you with it. Lots of work overall but find a group to work with and you should do fine.
A warning to all Psychology majors...take this at PIMA. Jake is a very nice guy outside of class and is rather helpful. However, the class is TOO difficult based on it being a prerequisite Psych class. If you do take it... group up with smart/dedicated people, you'll need each other. Oh yeah, do you like writing a 4000 word essay as ur final?
This is the worst class you will ever take. He makes you memorize a giant essay for the final and you have to write it all down via blue book. The class content is ridiculous and totally worthless. please save yourself the grief and take it at Pima or somewhere else... HORRIBLE CLASS.. got an A... but would rather take OCHEM. Worse class ever!
I'm a senior and Jake is the best professor I have ever had; one of the only ones who is engaging and challenges you to think for yourself. I do not consider myself to be extremely intelligent or motivated, but will likely receive an A+. Jake sets clear objectives and is always fair. Go to class, read thoroughly, ask for help. That was my secret.
Challenging course. Very helpful prof. outside of class. I did not love the class; did not hate it either. Material is straightforward, it's given to you. Method of delivery is a bit difficult to grasp and Jake should reconsider in-class summaries as well as written in-class finals counting so much. It's an alright class, glad to be done with it!
Jake was a great professor. He is very nice and very willing to help. Make sure you go to class and take extremely good notes on your laptop. This and reading/ highlighting important parts in the assigned reading will give you a good grade on his challenging weekly quizzes. Oh, and make sure you get into a good group!
He is clear, explains the material over and over again, and does his job teaching. But he also expects you to do your job, you need to read the books, and learn the rest of it and connect it to the lectures. Overall, hes helpful in office hours, and is very approachable. This class is very hard, there is an immense amount of information to learn.
He's tough. He demands a lot. Do ALL the reading (every word) and take notes, go to EVERY class, bring a laptop so you can type everything he says and "control-F" to find the quiz answers. He may seem evil, but you'll appreciate him when it's over. Answer the learning objective questions for the midterm and know the summaries from the books.
If you are interested in the subject matter (Psychology Research Methods) and don't mind a slightly aggressive teaching style (Jake) and you do all your frikin' work (go to class, take good notes, read the books), you will do just fine. This is college, we are expected to work; this course may be challenging but overall, it is fair. So TAKE IT!!
If this class is not a requirement DO NOT TAKE IT. If it is then go to every lecture. Work with friends and ask for help along the way! You have weekly quizzes that are very hard and timed, one mid term, and the horrible final. This class is unreasonable and useless.
You may not like this course because it is a lot of work. If you find that the material is useless and are also a psychology major, please switch your major. Jacobs teaches methods... straight up. No filler. Get with it or get out. I would recommend Jacobs updating his lecture style though: no power points, no nada. It's 2011. STEP UP!
I am going to tell you like it is: This class is hard. I busted my tail to do well, and I did. He is a hard professor. But he knows what he is talking about, he is extremely helpful, and his lectures are interesting. He's a great guy, you just cant be weak and not willing to do work.
This class is hard, but very helpful. Do the readings, go to class, take notes, and find smart people to work with. Warning: there are no powerpoints, just your notes. If you do all that you'll be just fine. Dr. Jacobs is very approchable and helpful. The man knows what he is going and has lot to teach.
Its a Difficult class. You will have to work and read and study the material. The final is difficult but after its over you'll feel like you've learned a lot. I don't suggest taking this course unless you have to but if you do you will learn a lot!!!
THIS CLASS IS HARD. You can't be a baby and not work! All his lectures are interesting but you have to stay awake and get everything. Do the readings and prepare for the final starting DAY 1! If you're able to take it at Pima, do it!
This class is hard, but you learn a lot. Make sure you go to every class and you understand. He gives you the question for the final at the start of class so make sure you work on the final from the beginning. He is always there to help if you need him and his TAs were a great help as well.
Extremely difficult! In order to do well in this class you must do all the readings, show up to class, take clear notes and start working on the final right away. You will learn A LOT from Dr. Jacobs. If you are a slacker then stay away from his class. He makes the material interesting, has great humor and is very approachable/helpful.
When Professor Jacobs tells you on the first day that if you are not ready to work leave...Listen! But if you are brave enough to stay, you will have the most amazing, EXTREMELY DIFFICULT, and enlightening semester of your life! Open your mind, let go of your biases, and listen; for the things that you will learn will absolutely blow you away!
This is the hardest class I've ever taken, and I'm a Sr. Jake is the nicest guy you'll meet, but the class is structured like a puzzle. You need to piece it together from the beginning. Just because its lower level, don't assume its easy cause its not. My group spent about 6-7 weeks on our final exam & still had a hard time with it. Glad I'm done.
If you really want to know whether or not to take this class, buy a copy of Dropping Ashes on the Buddha and read it. If you understand every kong-an perfectly, do not take this class. If you don't get them at all, don't take it either. But, if you read the book and are imbued with a real curiosity, this class is for you. Jake is a living kong-an.
The class is stats meets phil of science. Go to class, pay attention, and read both books (about 3-4 hours of reading/week). If you put in an effort, you'll pass the class. Jake is really clear and blunt about what he wants you to know. Easy to follow along with if you keep up. He can be abrasive and in your face about his ideas, but he's good.
The first day of class he will tell you that you need to work hard...he means it! i was not prepared and now I have to GRO it. Make sure you know from the beginning what you are getting in to. Otherwise as long as you keep up with everything and go to his office hours while preparing your final you will do just fine.
Jacobs is a great professor if you get to know him. However, his lectures are very bland most of the time. You have to keep up on weekly work or you will fall behind. Get a good group for quizzes. The class is not easy but can be made easier with a good group or help from someone who has previously taken the course.
It is a tough class at first, but if you keep reading, take excellent notes and find a group ASAP then this class won't be too rough. I heard the class was going online so I'm not sure how it will work next year, but stick with jacobs, he is excellent!
it is not necessary to attend the class but its really smart if you do there are quizzes every tuesday about information in the lecture. Plus it is really interesting stuff that you need to know especially if you are going to be a BS in PSYC there is a 2000 word essay you have to write and memorize and write in class for your final.
If you do not attend class...you will fail! This class is extremely difficult if you have no clue what is going on. If you read the chapters, attend lecture, and understand...you will do fine!
This is an exceptionally difficult class. The material is complex, the lectures are highly in depth, and Dr. Jacobs is a very "unique" professor. But if you attend class, do the reading, work to understand what you are learning, this class will change how you view the world. I give it an A.
Jake's dope, a little intimidating at first but he's a nice guy. You have to go to class and take lots of notes, almost too many. Its hard to focus on the lecture itself cause you have to write so fast. The weekly quizzes are a little difficult, groups needed. The final and midterm aren't as bad as people say, study for a few days and you're set.
This is the hardest class I have ever taken and I am not stupid. It is the most discouraging thing if you cant do well for the first few quizzes to leave because you will never do well...i understand the point but it is very discouraging they almost want you to fail UNLESS you plan on spending tons of time outside of class with him, TAs and a group
I attended every single class, read about 90% of the material, took thorough notes and it was still a pretty tough class. Jacobs is intimidating at first, but he is genuinely a great professor and individual! His charisma and straightforwardness made the class enjoyable. Quizzes are really difficult, midterm is easy, and final depends on your effor
Never take a class from him. I had a 4.0 before this class. His lecture has nothing to do with the book, yet you are expected to completely know and understand the book for the final. The final is a 5000 word essay you have to memorize combinig his lecture and the book, which have nothing to do with each other. Never take his class.
He is very intimidating the first class and expects everybody to do the work required, as any professor should. The quizzes are hard but he gives you everything you need to succeed, you just have to be willing to do the work. Overall, I think he's a good teacher and if you actually want to learn this stuff, I'd take this class.
If you ever wondered what it's like to take a class with a bitter old man for a lecturer, this is the class for you. Regardless of the difficultly level, he makes going to lecture a chore, because you need to listen to his rant-like, disorganized speech. They seem to have taken the class away from him, with good reason, I imagine.
He is a very intimidating teacher. If you are going to take this class you have to read and attend lecture. Very difficult
You must attend class and take copious notes. There is a lot of information. You take a quiz each week over the lectures and book material. The final is a memorized paper about the whole semester.
This was an online supplement to 290A. Good class. You make up an experiment, carry it out, and write a paper on it for your final.
This class required the most note taking of any class I've ever taken but if you go to every class and actually listen to every word he says you will learn a lot. The information I've learned in this class has been applicable to just about every other psych course I've taken and makes things a hell of a lot easier. Jake Jacobs is the man.
This class is pretty interesting. The material isn't really boring. Take notes and attend every class and you should be fine. Jacobs pushes you to understand the material and is a great teacher. He's is passionate about psych. Not an easy class but work hard and it will pay off. I promise.
A kapellmeister of research methods, W. Jake Jacobs conducts an eager, cherubim choir of students, pontificating on not just Descartes, and science more generally, but preaching on life and the importance of truth. His quizzes, tests, and final exam, while seemingly anathemic, are really helpful in understanding how psychology and science works.
This is definitely the hardest class I've taken at U of A so far, but I've also learned the most in this class. You have to take a lot of notes and pay close attention in lectures, but Professor Jacobs is so sweet and helpful!! He is an amazing professor. Even though the class may be difficult, it's very interesting and Professor Jacobs is great.
Prepare for almost no life with this class that will keep you on your toes and literally makes you want to drop out. everything up till the final was manageable, the amount of effort i put in, i better atleast get a B, if not, I will lose it! Take this class with Narter while you can!
Professor Jacobs is a great professor even though he may come off a bit intimidating at first. I have learned a lot in this class and am expecting a solid B, which is fair for the amount of work that I put into it. Read the book, record the lectures, and start the final early. You'll be fine.
How do you thank a teacher who taught you not to believe nor disbelieve, but to think for yourself? And to search not only for the "truth", but for true understanding? Jake taught so much so well that I'll forever be grateful. Was this a hard class? Of course it was. Aren't all good classes difficult?
Definitely one of the best professors I've had. The class was very hard, but I learned so much and really got a new perspective on clinical psychology. You really have to come to class everyday and take good notes, and read the book in order to do good on the quizzes. Jacobs is really nice when you talk to him outside lecture and helpful.
The class was one of the toughest I have ever taken. You have to record the lectures, take very careful notes and be completely listening to every single word. The weekly quizzes are quite tough. This class is very difficult. Take if you want a challenge.
Very informative teacher. I learned a lot from his class due to taking copious notes, attending each and every lecture, reading the book before each lecture, highlighting key parts of the book, typing the bolded definitions up, and having a large group to take the quizzes in. If you study hard and put in effort, you will do just fine.
This class will be difficult but it will also be extremely helpful if you are planning on becoming psychologist or a scientist in general. It is vital that you attend class everyday but if you are lost or confused he will definitely see you during office hours and answer any questions you may have about the material.
Jacobs is without a doubt, the hardest professor I've had. That said, I would not take Research Methods with any other professor. What you learn in his class is relevant, useful, and interesting. Attend class, every lecture. He may come off as intimidating but is kind and helpful in office hours.
Let me tell you I have not had a better Professor than this one.. He taught the class on such a level that made it intersting and you can tell he was passionate about it. The way he presented the information was in such a truthful way I absolutely loved it. Especially about FREUD! Although the material at times is hard it is all worth it in the end
I had a lot of frustration and negativity towards this class for the first half of the semester because I was not trying. I went into Jacobs office hours and had one conversation with him that truly changed my whole perspective. Listen, understand, and apply yourself in this class and you will have one hell of a semester with this guy!!
Jacobs yells information at you during lecture. His demeanor during class is his tactic to get the people who aren't serious about the major to drop it. During office hours he is the opposite. This class is manageable if you read the book chapters each week and take the quizzes, midterm and final in a group. Most difficult final I've ever taken.
Awesome professor and a very interesting class. With that said, this is not an easy class. It takes a lot of work. Attend every class, take good notes, make a study group, and read the book. If anything confuses you go to Professor Jacob's office hours. The final is tough and takes time to prepare for but it can be done. Good Luck!
Had about 8 heart attacks because of this class! The content itself is great, love it. The class quizes are hell. Make sure you know the lectures and chapters thorougly. 50% of the grade is quizes, 50 % is the final. The final is hell! Not an easy class, but it is very beneficial!
I absolutely loved this class and loved this teacher. he says at the beginning you either love or hate him and thought i was neutral for a while until i realized i liked him. It is very hard because it is very complex information you will never learn in any other class. type every word he speaks in class :) you will learn a lot by the end
If you go to class and pay attention, you shouldn't have to worry. To do well, you will need to understand what he's teaching but one visit to his office hours and it helps a lot. Final is stressful but even a procrastinator can succeed.
Come to class. Period. If you do this, take notes, and read the text, you will be fine. Though this may be a huge lecture class, it will be difficult to earn a grade higher than a C is you skip class. The concepts can be difficult to grasp, but they are not impossible. Also, keep an open mind.
Terrible teacher! The lectures had nothing to do with the book. when I retook it with narter all that lecture material was useless. Read the book and go to class. The final requires you to write a summary of the class, memorize it, then write it again in class. It was terrible. He's on sabbatical but if he ever comes back this class is hell.
Do the assigned reading. Quizzes are difficult, but manageable if you do the reading. I got an A in this course, however Prof. Jacobs is intimidating, egotistical, and unnecessarily aggressive. The notorious final lives up to the reputation, but the format is pure regurgitation. The course leaves no room for absorbing/applying the material. AVOID
He does/says what he does for a reason-to weed out the slackers & idiots. If you dont like his attitude then dont work with the mentally ill, they might be crude. He is one of the best professors at the UA and well known in the world of psychology. If you want to learn the real stuff take this class. If not, sit in on some other Mickey Mouse class.
He is completely fair in his grading procedures; you receive the grade you earn. As long as you stay on top of the reading, the course shouldn't be too difficult. The way he teaches and the way he tests you is extremely beneficial and enables you to remember the material not only for the final, but forever. He is a great professor overall.
Jake Jacobs is a professor who challenges and facilitates critical thinking of science and more specifically the science of psychology. His style of teaching requires one to understand and think for themselves and doesn't "hold your hand" through your learning experience. For those who wish to grow intellectually he is the perfect professor
Jake is one of the best professors/orators I've had He is honest, intriguing, direct, intense, only demands full effort. He's world class not hard and doesn't take any bs. He makes you want to learn. Ive had him for 2 classes, worked on my own the night before both finals and got A's In his classes you will do work expect/appreciate it. Thx Jake, AD
Jacobs is one of the professors on campus with a cult following. People either love him or hate him, not much in between. I took his course 2 years ago and even though I received an A, the quizzes and final were difficult. His material is interesting, but he is first and foremost a researcher and can be rude outside of class.
Prof. Jacobs was a nice guy, and his lectures could be entertaining, and nearly controversial. But I would not recommend this class, especially if you are just taking it because of the requirement, and have no intention of going into research. The weekly quizzes are ridiculous. If you don't marry into an intelligent group, you are going to fail.
Jacobs is a great guy and can be interesting but his teaching is not. Quizzes are ridiculously hard. I failed almost every one but the midterm was easy. Final was hard but if you think outside the box you'll pass and I still got a C in the class somehow. Get into a great group, create google docs for study guides and you will be fine. Good luck.
He's a nice person and a fantastic lecturer but his weekly quizzes will murder your grade. They're ridiculously hard - I understand he is trying to make us think critically but I stressed out about this class so much that I can't remember anything useful from it. Reconsider if you want to get an A with normal effort.
Quizzes every week. If you don't read you fail the quiz. Good teacher and fair grader. Interesting class.
Pay attention a lot during lectures and take plenty of notes. He talks a lot and sometimes likes to ramble. Read the book and take good notes and prepare for quizzes. For the final, find a topic you are genuinely interested in. He can be intimidating, but go to office hours and it can be very helpful to understand material.
Weekly Workload: Reading between 30-70 pages, short answer quizzes on the reading + previous lecture. Final: Cumulative Essay. He maintains interest & engagement, but be prepared to WORK for your grade! Pay attention in class, the content can be confusing. TONS of information to cover. 100% cool guy - He's honest, hilarious, & helpful.
Jake is very straight forward, but he wants you to know what you are getting into. The final is an essay that summarizes the class. If you go into his office hours, he will help you with it throughout the semester. Read the book and take notes of lectures will be key to passing the weekly quizzes. Jake is one of the best professors I've had here.
The class was one of the most difficult classes I have ever taken for PSY. It was a true eye-opener. I stressed out about this class every week but I learned so much! I loved that he was so brutally honest about the field of Clinical Psych. It was well worth my time!
This was one of the hardest classes I took. I would recommend this class. Jake, is a great teacher but can come off as a hard teacher. He will help you if you need either in class or his office hours (go see him during office hours)! For this class, Jake makes sure you learn the material and tests that with a Final and a research proposal papers.
Human Sexuality was actually a really interesting class and it was great to take it with someone who was really passionate about it. He gives weekly quizzes on the lectures and a chapter of a book he assigns but there are no tests and one final paper and that's it. He's a great professor, and you should absolutely take him if you can.
Jacobs obviously enjoys lecturing on the field of clinical psychology and I learned a lot, but his lectures were often without visual aid and class was 3 hours, meaning taking notes got to be difficult.
Jake, was an awesome professor. Clear cut, and if you go to his office hours he will help you tremendously. He really enjoys what he teaches, and knows his subjects. Definitely do the readings i tried not doing them and learned fast that was not the route to take. I would recommend him.
Great class! You have quizzes almost every Friday on the lecture from the week that are easy if you go and read the book. You need the book in order to pass the class and have to read it!! Final is a paper that he will check until you get an A on it. Great class would take again
I loved his class; lectures were very informative and also really funny at times. This man speaks the truth, and he does it with a lot of profanity that is hilarious coming from a little old man. He provides opportunities to defend test answers and get feedback in office hours. The final which is 1/3 of your overall grade is a group project.
He makes it fun and the material is incredibly interesting. I had to read a book for the class and it's a must have if you want to pass the quizzes, but it's not a textbook so it's not too bad. There was a cumulative final which we could work with a group of 3 to 5 people. It's pretty fun, but it isn't an easy A. MUST GO TO CLASS TO PASS.
Amazing teacher! However, he isn't for everyone, especially in this field. He focuses on the science and weaves a decent story in the process. If you have a science background, want someone who isn't on some misguided quest to get you 'in-touch' with your feelings, and want to duck the pretentiousness, you've found your prof.
Teacher is great, by far one of my favorite professors at UA. You have to read the assigned book and pay attention in class in order to pass the weekly quizzes, but if you read they're easy. No homework, no other tests, just the weekly quizzes, and one group final. Jacobs is fun, informative, and always made class something to look forward to!
Lectures are very interesting and pertain very easily to real life. Even the textbook was interesting.
Dr. Jacob's is extremely knowledgable. The information he provides and the way he approaches human sexuality is amazing. The lectures are very interesting. BE WARNED, you will be doing a lot of reading and note-taking. This is not an "easy-A" course, but very worth the A you could achieve.
The course was very much designed to prepare students for the reality of the Psychological profession. Professor Jacobs is passionate about the truth and will often step on the "delicate" feelings of naive students who are cognitively dissonant about their field of study's chaotic, occasionally outright evil, underbelly. PS: Bring your work pants.
Professor Jacobs is a great teacher. If you want a professor who is funny, whose lectures are interesting, who focuses on the science and has a lot of experience in his field, you want him. If you want a professor who goes easy on you and doesn't make you read/work, then take another class.
Professor Jacobs is one of my favorite teachers I have had thus far in my college career. He is truly passionate about what he is teaching and is very straightforward about how to pass the class. If you follow the guidelines provided and read the book, you will be fine. I highly suggest this class.
I can't overstate by how much Dr. Jacobs is my favorite professors. He's funny, insightful, and wants you (everyone i n his class) to understand the material. You can contest your quizzes with no penalty only reward. No he's not easy, but you put in the time you will learn.
The class was really interesting and eye-opening. I learned a lot in this class. The teacher was NOT helpful AT ALL. He changed the quiz grade policy from 2/3 to 1/2 because everyone was failing. He left halfway through the semester with no notice. The TA was WAY more helpful but not by much. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!
This class was one of my favorites I ever took. Dr. Jacobs was extremely helpful if you get confused. I learned so much from him and was able to connect it to other classes. You have to pay attention in class and do the reading in order to do well in the class. Overall, if you want to get an honest view of human sexuality take this class.
Only quizzes. once a week and very straightforward and aligned to class perfectly.
His teaching style is a lot different from most professors. He does not use D2L, only email and he also does not give tests, just weekly quizzes and a final group paper. Overall, this style of learning ensures that you don't fall behind and actually learn the material. Great class if you actually want to learn.
Best professor ever! His lectures are honestly amazing! Be prepared to do a lot of reading in order to pass the weekly quizzes! You'll need to use the textbook! His lectures are wonderful and he's a great person!
Coolest professor I've had yet. He's challenging but not overly difficult (as long as you do the work of course). The material is soon fascinating and you can tell he has a real passion for what he teaches. There are weekly quizzes and a final paper and that's it! But you have to show up to class and read the texts. Super cool dude! Take his class!
Professor Jacobs is one of the best. He cares about what you actually take away from the course by the end of the semester. Your grade is 50% the average of your quiz grades (1 per week), and 50% the written final exam. The quizzes aren't bad, just don't get lazy with the readings, and don't skip class! Glad I took his class.
The professor is very smart. I took this class fall 206. You want to attend every class, take notes and understand the material. Along with the material you have to read (2 books). You will have a quiz every week and a final. The grading is very inconsistent. At times you would get an F or an A there was no in between. Take another class!
Professor Jacobs is one of the best! He wants you to actually take the information from this class and be able to remember it when it's over. Be ready to read because half of your grade is the average of your quiz grades the other half of your grade is the grade you receive on your written final exam. As long as you read you should be golden!
Dr. Jacobs is down-to-earth, passionate, & knowledgeable. The weekly quizzes test comprehension of general concepts, rather than ability to memorize details. You will have to put in effort, but you will learn a lot more than a class with open-note, multiple choice tests. I gave 4 instead of 5 only because his powerpoints could use some pizzazz.
It is a class with a lot of debate. The topics are challenging and Jacobs is highly prepared to guide the class. Be ready to switch your way of conceiving behavior and its study. Grading is not a problem if you are really into the class. There is no way of attending the course without reading as you will have to participate very often.
My favorite class and professor! Very knowledgeable and passionate about the material he teaches. Top tip: stay on top of the reading - its a lot but if you understand the material you wont have an issue with the weekly quizzes. Go to lectures to get the chance to ask questions. The class is information-loaded but very intellectually-stimulating
This course will force you to think outside the box and participation is mandatory. Don't take this course if you are looking for an easy A or feel uncomfortable contributing in class discussions. He is a great lecturer and keeps it very interesting. If you are willing to do the work you will learn a great deal of useful information.
The start of the class was VERY intimidating but once you get into the swing of things it gets much easier. This is a class where you MUST read the material because 2/3 of your grade will come directly from the books you read. Missing a few classes is fine, but 1/3 of your grade will come from the lectures. Tough to be sure, but well worth the work
Do the reading and show up on quiz days!
WORST CLASS EVER. Every quiz was impossible no matter how much studying you do. Talked to him about it and he basically said I wasn't studying correctly. Spoke to others in the class and we all had less than a 60% in the class. ONLY QUIZZES AND FINALS ARE GRADED!! He wanted us to learn every detail in a GenEd
Great professor, really cares about you learning the material. Learned so much from his class, more than any other psych professor I've had in the past. Would 100% take a class from him again.
Literally the best teacher I have ever had. Will make you think about things in a whole new way.
Jake really cares about all of his students-and the material that he is teaching. He grades based on what type of student you are, not simply how well you test. If you show up to class, and make it clear you are there to learn you will do fine. The topics discussed are extremely interesting, and while difficult, definitely worth taking.
Best professor I've ever had. Its an easy class, you do not have to memorize everything just UNDERSTAND, not memorize, what each chapter is mainly about and the class will be very simple.
Iv'e never had a professor quite like him. He is extremely passionate about teaching and really wants his students to succeed. I often felt comfortable participating in class.
This class was one of the best classes I've taken. He is very passionate and teaches in a way that actually helps you learn, not just memorizing the information to pass the class. His lectures were always interesting and funny. The final paper was tough, but he offered a lot of great feedback to help you succeed.
Jacobs is a great professor, he's extremely funny, and really engages with the class. This class is extremely interesting but lecture heavy. If you miss a class you'll miss a quiz, or your chance to give the summary (in replace of lowest quiz grade). Hes offers a lot of feedback for you to succeed. Would take again.
The material in the class was very interesting and he's a great teacher but, with a quiz every week worth 100 points and memorizing a 4 to 8 page abstract for the final I don't think its worth the amount of stress and anxiety I had over this class wondering if I was going to graduate or not.
Jake is a great professor and is passionate about what he teaches. I really enjoyed coming to his class everyday and that he pushed you to learn and retain information. Although his teaching skills are great, his communication skills are mediocre at best. If you want to hear from him do not email him, instead go to his office hours.
The BEST professor I've ever had. His lectures are so interesting and you won't want to skip his class. The grading is all off of weekly quizzes which are open note, online, so it's hard not to get an A. He always ends class early and is hilarious. TAKE THIS CLASS.
Jake Jacobs is truly one of my favorite professors I have EVER had. The best comparison I can think of is that he reminds me of a typical "mad genius". He's sooo brilliant, he's absolutely hilarious, and he is blunt. I hope every single Psych major takes Jake Jacobs at some point because he is just that great!! I can't recommend him enough.
I don't like this professor. It is extreme lecture heavy and there are in-class quizzes with no notes. Your grading varies greatly each quiz because of the TA graders. He doesn't like well explained long answers but quick short to the point in words he likes. Very frustrating class but not the most difficult. No exams either, just quizzes.
Abnormal psych. Very difficult class but by far one of the best professors I've ever had. NEED to pay attention in lecture to do well, thankfully his lectures are quite engaging. Very knowledgable and funny. 10 question quizzes every week, difficult - go to TAs if you think you deserve more credit!
Jake is one of the best teachers I have ever had. In the first few weeks, you will probably get scared of his teaching style, but you will learn to love it. He's really cool, weekly quizzes are all the work, and entertaining to listen to. You have to do the reading and attend class though. He expects a lot of you but this class is worth it.
Jake Jacobs teaches straight out of the DSM IV, i.e. outdated and confusing. He repeatedly called disorders by incorrect names and symptoms. In addition, his quiz questions were subjective and if you do not say exactly what he wants you lose points. The quizzes were assigned outside class time, and the recorded lectures were mostly tangents
worst teacher I've ever come across. DO NOT take him.
This class is really tough- Jake really makes you work for your grade. Quizzes are 100% of the grade. The lectures DO NOT just go over reading material, so you have to read the book AND listen to lectures in order to get a good grade in this class. It was very challenging and time-consuming, but I felt I learned a lot from this course. Worth it.
Really, really, really hard professor. He makes you work for your grade, constant reading assignments and weekly quizzes are tough. However, if you sit down for a few hours and actually do your work you will succeed. It just takes effort. I would not recommend Jake, but he's not a bad guy. Just goes on tangents and expects you to know everything
Let me start by saying, Professor Jacobs is an extremely charismatic and interesting man with a cool backstory. On the first day of class, he was captivating and made this course seem amazing. The course continuously got less and less interesting and the lectures were dry and hard to get through. He fails to fully explain his grading process.
Jake is a very cool guy but he is not a good professor. He is very very unclear about how he grades things. The only thing that is in the grade book in his class are quizzes. The quizzes are extremely hard and so specific and even if you answer questions exactly how he explained it, you get 0 points.
He puts out weekly voice lectures along with posting his slides. The learning objectives on the slides are the exact written questions on the quizzes. Office hours are a must!!! He answers all your questions and will essentially tell you how to get full points on the written part. The multiple-choice is from the reading. 12 quizzes entire grade.
He is a good human/means well. he culturally unaware. His work is brutal and you will have much more work than any teacher who has this class. His lectures/office hours are informative. The textbook just adds a burden to students without much benefit. He has made me cry during lectures and mocked me for it. He does use outdated and offensive terms.
Jake is a great teacher. Your grade is your scores on 14-ish quizzes. Office hours are a must! He will go through exactly what you need to write on the quizzes and you'll learn more, beyond the scope of the textbook. You also have to read the textbook. The chapters are very long but all of the multiple choice questions are pulled from the textbook.
PSY 290A was one of the main reasons I was able to finish Covid-19 school. Though the course is difficult, you will learn a great deal of knowledge as a result of it. However, you should be aware that this is mostly a metaphysical class. Dr. Jacobs is an excellent professor who can help you if you ask and go to his office hours.
Jake is great and this class was so helpful to anyone pursuing a career in psychology (especially clinical). He provides great insight that you don't get from many professors. The only grades are quizzes, but they are open book/note & the learning objectives reflect the quiz so if you go to his class you can ask him to explain. I highly recommend!!
its been about 6 weeks and Ive emailed multiple tunes and have gotten 0 response. your grade is based off on 15 quizzes and THATS IT. literally. but they are so hard to get a good grade on. his lecture videos are hours long, but its okay cuz i found that I do better on his quizzes when I dont even listen to his lectures lol
I had Jacobs for PSY 290A and have friends who had him for PSY 381. He is a nice guy but he doesn't even teach the course content. Instead, he just spends entire lectures talking about his opinions on philosophy and then tests us on that instead of the content. Not only does he not teach the content, but he is a ridiculous grader. I learned nothing
He is clearly a very intelligent man, but his lectures sound as if he is talking down to you. Your grade is completely determined by quizzes based on information he does not explain well and he will take off points for VERY specific reasons and he will NOT give any feedback on your grade or why he took off points
I loved taking this class! The content was highly conceptual and very interesting. It could be a little difficult to get your head around at first, but going to the office hours weekly made it really easy to get clarification and answers. The entire grade was based on quizzes, but they were open book and open note. Overall, Jake is an awesome prof!
I really enjoyed taking Abnormal Psych with Professor Jacobs. The lectures were interesting, and gave information that supplemented the textbook reading. The grades were all quizzes, but because they were open-note and open-book, I found them relatively easy. If you're confused or need help, go to office hours!
As a professor, Professor Jacobs is chill and makes sure his students are really grasping the content. For the class, the only assignments are chapter quizzes that are based on the textbook and lectures. Definitely a lot of self-discipline and self-work that needs to be done in this class. Going to office hours helped a lot with the lectures.
Prof. Jake does make the class lecture and textbook heavy. He provides office hours for the lectures to clarify anything, which helped a lot with the quizzes. This class is very "on your own" and can be a struggle for those who don't learn proficiently that way, so be aware. If you're open about what to put in quiz answers, he'll tell you.
If you're looking for straightforward instructions on how to design a study I strongly recommend you take this course with another professor. But, if you enjoy existentialism and second guessing everything you know about science, this is the class for you. I loved it but it wasn't what I was expecting... I'd call it a philosophy class
This class was more of an asynchronous course by Prof. Jacobs but was still incredibly simple to follow. He details how to get an A on the first day of class and uses his office hours as a time to answer any and all questions. You're going to need the textbook and take good/detailed notes for an easy A!
If you listen to the recordings on the slides and takes notes for the objectives, you should be solid. The text also helps of course. Grades are based on 1 quiz per section and he held recorded office hours so students could ask ?'s on the section. He is hilarious, kind and very blunt at times but overall this was my favorite class!
To quote the Professor "Some people finish this class and say this is mostly philosophy not psychology, these are the people who got it, these are the people who understand." His classes are about the philosophical natures around the subject much more than the science or study of the subject itself. The class you signed up for is just a textbook.
Not only is this class super interesting in itself, but Dr. Jacobs has PHENOMENAL lectures. He records them ahead of time and posts them online, so it's easy to go and review whenever. Also, the grading is 100% based on quizzes, which are very easy if you just take notes and listen to the lectures. Great class and great professor.
Honestly one of the best professors I've ever had. Jake truly cares about his students and is such a great person. Grades consisted of weekly quizzes and nothing else, but the quizzes are relatively easy if you listen to the lectures. All of the lectures are also pre-recorded, which makes studying a lot easier. Power points are also given.
Dr. Jacobs is one of my favorite professors ever. He may come off cold at first but he is so caring and passionate about the material. I know some people struggle with his lecture style but personally I loved it & learned so much. It takes a week or so to get used to the quizzes but follow the learning objectives & youll be golden.
His lectures are interesting. The syllabus is just simply incorrect and does not match what he and the rest of D2L says, he won't change it to clear things up, and is very rude when asked questions about this. Multiple times he has not put the slides on D2L and did not share his screen while lecturing so the students had no powerpoint to look at
I enjoyed this professor, his lectures were informative and accurately reflected quiz material. TAs (I think) were mostly in charge of class organization so there was some confusion. However, If you go to class or watch recorded lectures then you will do fine.
Very nice professor, extremely intelligent and well-informed about abnormal psychology. I wish there was more opportunity for points in the class. Low time commitment; all grades are based on somewhat difficult weekly open note quizzes. Watch the weekly lectures, the out-of-class lectures, and read the textbook and they're easy A's.
This is a little bit late, but I took ABPSYCH from Dr. Jacob's in the late 90s when he was at USC. Best professor experience in my entire career. He was engaging, told great stories to enhance his didactic approach and was very approachable. If you went to office hours, fee was 1 bag of Earl Grey tea, but he would give you answers to everything.
