Jake was my TA and let's just say he's awesome! He sometimes teaches over your head but he explains things well and he's really cool.
He was my TA, and he was coool and helpful
Really great teacher, keeps things interesting and always willing to help!
Khoury is a nice guy, and makes class participation pretty easy. His classes are fun and interesting, but he gives you a TON of work and essays to do in between classes. And he's somewhat of a hard grader. He's also assigns long reading assignments and expects you to talk about it in class. Be prepared for an essay per class if you take him.
Worst educational experience of my life. The coursework was excessively demanding and had no useful application to the topics being discussed. Topics were sporadic and random, teaching "style" was very difficult to follow, much like his manner of speaking, due to excessive use of the word "right?" after, before, and in between every sentence.
He is a nice teacher. There were many writing homeworks but he helped me to finish them. Go to his office and ask for help. He will gladly help you.
Very demanding professor but his high expectations will have you repeatedly producing the most well written papers that you will ever write. Lots of work, very rewarding.
Hated this class. He was quite demanding and philosophy centered for the first semester. Did not agree with some methods. Group projects were ok, would have liked different topics!!!
He's a cool guy and comes off as chill, but he can get tough. He's very picky about writing and gives a lot of writing assignments. He is also VERY liberal and incorporates politics into his lessons... He will probably offend conservative students because he has shown the class video clips ridiculing the conservative perspective multiple times.
Khoury comes off as a cool guy at first. However, he is an EXTREMELY HARD GRADER. I cannot stress this enough. He only accepts one form of writing, and if you do not write exactly like it, you will fail. He gives out writing assignments daily, a lot due on Friday nights which prevent you from going out... I absolutely do NOT recommend him.
Nice and fair grader. Just do the work and everything will be kosher.
Very kind and helpful. I had trouble with some assignments and he always helped me. Very good teacher!
Nice and understanding teacher. He is very relaxed and helpful.
He is really nice and funny. His humor keeps class relaxed while you learn. He's really helpful too. He always took extra time to help me understand things.
MIs easygoing, humorous, and even cool at first, but past the first unit he becomes very demanding. He reiterates a lot and really puts harsh deadlines and criticism on students. He may be occasionally helpful, but you may want to work well ahead on templates. He does not allow early work either.
Great professor. Funny and incredibly understanding. All the work he asks you to do helps you with big assignments. Take him!!
I originally hated Khoury, because the course work was very demanding. Not gonna lie, we had mini essays due every class. However, he ended up being my favorite professor. VERY understanding & helpful. His class improved my writing by a landslide & I recommend him completely if you're willing to work hard to improve in writing & critical thinking.
Khoury came off as a very laid-back loving and dedicated teacher for the first half of the semester. After the assignments got more demanding, more students got more confused which further frustrated him as he often lashed out at the class. He also strongly pushed personal meetings for further critique which weren't helpful but just stated flaws.
Khoury is funny, but a tough grader. Class is discussion based. Deadlines are very clear, if you procrastinate he will know and he will dock your points. Some of the things he's looking for on assignments are unclear, and if you miss class you will fall behind. Not too much homework most of the time, just readings, but reading quizzes during class
Relaxed & helpful. He is fairly harsh in grading, but all criticism is constructive. keep up with assignments (which are clearly laid out) the paper will essentially write itself. 10 page paper required by 200 was daunting, but after his assignments mine was 12 pages w no fluff. Makes time outside of class to help you. Improved my writing 10x over
I like him a lot, but I admit Khoury has his quirks and flaws as a teacher. His grading is a bit harsh, and his requirements for major assignments can be unclear. He may outline more stipulations for essays in class that aren't mentioned in the rubric he gave (for this reason, skipping class is a bad idea). Know how to take criticism.
Khoury isn't a flexible grader. You could write an amazing essay but if it's not in the structure that he wants, you won't get higher than a C+ Takes attendance like any other FI course. He's a great guy though and I recommend him.
If you have any type of learning disability DO NOT TAKE HIM. Getting feedback from him is like pulling teeth. Participation is extremely important and the assignments to lead into each other. There is a lot of reading and annotating to start with and then it's paper after paper. The 1st one I feel is HIGHLY intrusive on a personal level.
HE IS THE BOOOOOOOOOMB.... HIGHLY RECOMMENDED XOXO
Khoury is helpful, kind, and clear. All assignments are posted early so you know what you have to do. He doesn't like laziness so be prepared to try your best. I had a good time in his class. He is funny.
Jake is the best professor I've had at VCU. His lectures are always interesting, especially since most are discussion-based. He really makes his students think critically. He is a tough grader but he does it to help his students, not to hurt them. I looked forward to going to his class everyday. Awesome guy. I plan on taking more classes with him.
Khoury is a tough grader, there is no way around it. Taking a course instructed by Professor Khoury will strengthen your writing as both a student and a professional. He offers great feedback on assignments and is more than willing to meet with you during office hours to help with the work. He responds quickly to emails looking for guidance.
He's a good teacher and willing to help but is a crazy hard grader. Probably one of the toughest classes you'll take.
You must work for your grades in this class and he makes that clear from day 1.
Proffesor Khoury is fair towards all of his students, he is more than willing to help but it's up to you to take what he says and put your ideas into action. I went from being a C writer to getting an A on my final paper. He's a wonderful instructor and is very enthusiastic towards his job and what he does. Stick the course through!
tough but fair guy. probably one of my more stressful classes this semester. follow the guidelines/rules, meet up with him frequently, speak up in class and you should do fine. 3500 word paper sucked but its a VCU requirement. glad I'm done with this class though..... GOOD LUCK TO ALL. pick him if u must, but there may be better professors.
Jake doesn't make class easy. He usually plays the bad cop when cooperatively teaching with Professor Cales. Aside from putting students on edge, he also says the same things repeatedly and isn't very direct in answering questions.
Jake Khoury expected to much from a class that should have been considered very open and not so hardcore.
Fun and interesting class. Khoury was always very helpful.
You have to work in his class, but he's kind and helpful.
The material is interesting and I like him as a person, however I would NOT recommend this class because of the insane amount of group projects, and everything is graded really harshly. I am a good student and wasnt expecting an "easy A" but I put in more hours to this class than in my actual major because the professor assigned so much work.
He's a great teacher, funny, helpful, wants you to succeed, very respectful. However, you have to be willing to do the work he assigns if you want to pass. It can be intensive but you'll come out with a deeper understanding of the course. I don't recommend taking it if you're just looking to meet a number of credits or a prerequisite.
I HATED this man until the last month of class. He is a tough grader and makes you work for a good grade. GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS. I didn't think it would help but now I feel much more confident and he understands how I work now. I am an art major and thought I could pass just half assing it. NOPE. I had to make this class a top priority.
This is a fun and very interesting class. He's a nice guy, and he provides clear direction for all assignments. Attendance is mandatory and he expects you to be prepared. Take this class if you don't mind working and you want to learn.
Awesome professor, loved his class. Really funny guy
AVOID THIS COURSE AND PROFESSOR IF YOU CAN! professor relies heavily on participation, and requires interaction, punctuality and attentiveness. the course schedule was based on 5 group projects, 2 video presentations, 2 in class presentations, and 1 solo video presentation. ON TOP OF articles required to read/analyze before class every week. O.D.
Fun and interesting class! You have to work but it's worth it!!
Jake was one of the worst professors I've had at VCU. He grades way too hard and expects way too much out of his students. He is emotional and if you have an opinion then he will find a way to make you feel dumb about it. He is also NEVER clear on any instructions he gives. He majored in philosophy, that should say enough. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!!
I really enjoyed Jake Khoury as a professor. He's a great professor and truly cares about his students. He will make as much time for you as you need and gives great feedback/spends time discussing your questions. The only thing I disliked about the class was the how much he acknowledged immature questions. That may just be a pet peeve.
Right so. Jake Khoury is a really good guy-I have to give him that. But, he thinks that this class is the most important thing you'll ever take. He assigns so much and expects things the way HE wants them. Say goodbye to your own writing style because you have to write to fit him. This class was a waste of time, tears, and I'm glad it's over.
Jake has a background in english and philosophy so his discussion based class "The Truth About Lying" wasn't very relevant to my science major. It is a VERY heavy discussion based class and he really wants students to participate, he often calls on people who rarely talk in order to make them participate.
Khoury was a great & funny guy, but his class was tough. The grading criteria was unclear & when I asked questions they were indirectly answered and left me still confused. This class takes a lot of participation and requires you to speak in all class discussions. On the plus side, there's not textbook and it's just a few dollars worth of printing.
His class is basically just a philosophy class with a fancy name. Heavy discussion and participation is very important. Most instructions were unclear but if you asked for guidance he would help.
If you're a fan of unclear instructions, pop quizzes, and tough grading then this is the class for you.
I took this class in a summer program over the course of five weeks, so I would say this class is very intense. This is not the type of class you can come into and think you can get a nap in. He also does not allow laptops in class unless he requests for you to bring them and will call you out if you are texting. Participation is vital to pass.
Don't take Jake's class if you want an easy A. He is a very tough grader and strict about the course in general. There are not many graded assignments in this class, so your grade will drop quickly if you start slacking. It is difficult to get an A in his course. However, he is a good guy, and he is always available for additional feedback.
Don't take him. His instructions were so unclear and so confusing and he is such a tough grader. bad feedback. It seemed like no matter how hard I tried I just couldn't get an a on any of the assignments. If you can take any other professor I would. A lot of the work he makes you do is pretty pointless and a big waste of time. So glad it's over.
Jake is fair, caring, respectful, funny, & demanding. He makes you work very hard in this class, but I learned a lot about argumentative writing & sources. He's accessible outside class & gives helpful feedback. Lots of busy work. If you go to his office, show him that you care, & do all the FORMAL process work, you can do well. I'm glad it's over.
Jake was an awesome professor. The classes themselves were a little dull, but that's just the subject matter. He makes sure you're on the road to success by scheduling one-on-one conferences with him throughout the semester. Jake does all he can to make sure you succeed in his class, and you can tell he really cares about his students.
Khoury gave you a good understanding of what he expected of you with his syllabus. However, he will not spoon feed you anything. You have to do all of the readings, even if you do not think they are important. Overall he did a really good job of teaching you how to critically think and put the texts into perspective in real world discussions.
Khoury is an incredible professor. He expects his students to work hard and earn their grades, as he is not someone who hands out A's to everyone. He assigns a lot of individual readings, and is very strict with his timed and meticulous quizzes. He loves it when students engage in meaningful conversation, but dislikes irrelevant chatter/thoughts.
Give lots of extra credit opportunities. Is willing to work with you at any time. Must show up to class if you want a good grade
Professor Khoury is an excellent teacher. At first, he may come off as stern and unforgiving in general; however, he really does care about his students. Go to class and PAY ATTENTION TO DETAILS. He also notices if you work hard outside of class, too. This class is very difficult, but if give it your all, you'll become an extraordinary writer.
Jake is a genuine person. He really wants his students to pass in his course, but you have to put the time and effort to do so. He is not afraid to help you with any assignments that he asks you to do. He emails very quickly and will accommodate his time to help you in any way possible. He is great, I would definitely take this class again!
If you're looking for an easy time in UNIV, don't go for Khoury. If you're looking to actually improve your writing, research, and critical thinking skills, he's your guy. Toughest course of my academic career, but I'm so fortunate to have had a professor who cares so much about what you actually get out his class.
Professor Khoury is one of the best professors I've had the pleasure of having so far at VCU. Definitely don't take this class if you're looking for an easy A -- it requires A LOT of time and effort to do well, but if you're looking to challenge yourself (like I was) and become a better writer, I 100% recommend this class.
Professor Khoury was amazing in my opinion. You definitely have to work hard and put in the effort. 16 pg paper is based on everything turned in/researching all semester long, so in the end you're just putting pieces of puzzles together. He also gives lots of extra credit, and you'll come out of his class knowing a lot more than when you came in.
Got a 89.5%, but honestly he gave a lot of extra credit and really brought my grade up. MUST DO READINGS.
If you want an easy A in this class, dont expect it to come to you. Mr. Khoury wants you to challenge yourself to work for it. For the duration of the semester, you will grow as you constantly revise and learn what needs improvement, as his feedback is not only easy to access, but also clear and insightful. Would recommend if you want a challenge.
Khoury is such a great professor. He is a very tough grader, so you definitely have to work for your grades, but you will walk away from this class with skills that you did not have before. If you do not understand something, he will take the time to make sure you understand before moving on.
He was an okay teacher but if you have trouble comprehending things and need them really broken down then I wouldn't choose his class honestly. He likes to have a personal relationship with you to see where your head is which is not something a lot of professors do but if you have problems working in groups or comprehending then choose someone else
Jake's instructions are not very clear and there are 6 quizzes at the beginning of class. Attendance is mandatory and will affect your grade. All FI classes are annoying, but he tells you what you do wrong on major assignments, so you have a chance to revise before the final portfolio. If try your best and complete all hw it is easy to pass.
Whatever you do, don't take Khoury for UNIV at VCU. Tough grader, gives out rubrics for his assignments yet I have no idea on what criteria he grades on. Vague in his instructions and then takes off random points for assignments. I would consider myself a decent writer yet I'm earning consistent C's on assignments for this class.
Personally, the class was very difficult. the professor has a strict grading method and has high expectations. However, if significantly enhancing researching skills is what someone is looking for, then this class is great.
If youre online definitely do not take univ with this professor, he was the farthest thing from understanding and issued a no late work policy during a pandemic. Also assigns lods of participation work that isnt worth a grade but hell just make sure your other grades suffer. Very unspecific about what he wants, yet a very specific grader.
I considered dropping this class because of how difficult it was in the beginning. After I talked to him I felt much better. He is a tough grader but if you reach out and explain what you are struggling with he is more than helpful and undertsaiding!
Hes a funny guy but a tough grader. Dont take him if youre looking for an easy A, but if youre genuinely trying to improve your writing then Khoury is a fantastic professor for it.
made me cry in class by overwhelming us with so much homework and those reading quizzes are you kidding me? i bet the average grade on them was a 40%. we had them almost every class right when class began. You know what made me mad about that..i would actually read the passages but the ducking questions were so detailed that i failed every quiz.
He goes way too deep into lectures, and often will get caught up in the wrong things. He is a very tough grader and a lot of the times half the things that are on the quizzes are things we didnt even get the time to go over because he got caught off track. If you seem out of it that day he will speciffically make it his goal to call you out.
Great professor, learned a lot and opened my eyes to a ton of different perspectives. Very few assignments for a total of 100 points, you're good as long as you pay attention in class, put in an effort, and ask questions. He's definitely a tough grader but is very dedicated and wants the best for his students, so don't hesitate to ask for help.
Sometimes his courses are tough but he is a great teacher. As long as you put effort you will get a good grade. Great teacher too, very respectful and always goes out of his way to make sure he is catering to the student's needs as well.
Difficult grader but a nice professor.
Favorite professor I've had. He really takes the time to make sure everyone understands the material before moving on. Go to class and pay attention it will make the quizzes and overall class much easier for you. He is a bit of a tough grader but all his feedback has been super helpful.
Khoury was a great professor, very charismatic and knew how to keep us engaged in the subject material even at 9am. Be warned, he gives surprise quizzes and is a tough grader, however if you really take this class seriously and not expect it to just be "easy" because its a gen ed, you will do great.
He is a very friendly professor, office hours are easy to reach, class sizes are small to so it feels like a high school class. For UNIV111 every other professor makes you read the book, but he does not. You will have to write 3 big essays and then revise them all in his class so make sure your ok with that beforehand.
Great professor! Would definitely recommend taking his class. There is class discussions everyday that is apart of participation attendance which could be nerve-racking if you have anxiety like I have when talking in front of a group of people not well known. Nothing too difficult that at least a C can be maintained.
He is caring and makes an effort to stay informed. He sometimes picks on and calls people out. He is straightforward and uses a simple system, but the final grade may not be accurate until near the end of the semester, so you have to calculate the points. The schedule can be unpredictable, but there are primarily quizzes. I highly recommend him!
Personally, this class was more fast-forward and less on hands learning unlike Univ 111 with him. He is caring and makes an effort; straightforward with grading and uses a simple system. The schedule isn't too bad but can be iffy. There are mostly surprise quizzes and essays. Overall, the class can be fun or boring but, I highly recommend him!
Very wonderful!
although there are mixed reviews I can confidently say JAKE is a awesome professor. He tries his best to explain the assignments and if you don't understand just ask he is happy to explain further. He is just a silly guy trying his best to live laugh love. Lots of chances to gain extra credit and is always happy to meet if you need assistance.
Khoury's UNIV111 class is pretty easy as long as you show up to class and pay attention, and budget your time properly to get the work done. He gives detailed feedback on writing assignments and answers questions. His rubrics are clear and he goes over every assignment and tells you exactly what he wants from you. He's funny and likes to cold call.
Mr. Khoury is tough but fair because he wants you to succeed. In order to succeed in his class, you must pay attention and show up on time to class because those are part of your grade. In his class you will have three essays and for the final, you will make revisions on those essays and improve your grade. He gives good feedback and offers help.
This guys funny
Too much for a class that is not your major.
Khoury rocks. He's funny and really makes an effort to get to know all of his students. He gives clear instructions for assignments and provides rubrics, and always gives us feedback. He likes to cold call and give little impromptu group "presentations," but they go towards participation and he is supportive even if you don't quite know the answers
Khoury is a really great professor. Really cares about what he does. Class was difficult I will admit but if I ever had an questions, he always gave a good clear answer and made sure I understood. Gives out rubrics for assignments so make sure you look over those. He does like to occasionally cold call so be sure you know your readings and material
Jake is the best professor I've ever had. He's so silly and incredibly loving, he cares for his students so much. The class isn't easy but he values our learning so much and was always there to guide us until we could produce our best work. His care of his students extends beyond the classroom and it's apparent. I love Jake, I'll never forget him.
I took Khoury for univ111 and 112. Khoury really cares about his students and makes an effort to connect with them. By the end of the year, the class felt like family. The class can be difficult but the learning is worth it. If you are a motivated student you should do fine. Khoury does like to cold call so beware if you are shy.
Her is pretty good professor overall but sometimes it's hard to understand him during lectures sometimes. He also likes to randomly call on people and there are also individual presentations, beware if you are shy. We had to an average of 2-3 essays for each semester and group presentations as well. Overall, is he a pretty good professor.
Professor Khoury is a great guy, and an even greater teacher. He likes to keep the atmosphere light, only applying pressure when he feels needed. The class is very participation heavy and he WILL make you interact. Honestly an Easy A if you follow assignment instructions and engage though. He is accessible outside of class and very helpful.
There are quizzes almost every day and lots of reading. Lots of group and individual presentations. I got a good grade in this class, but if you are a quiet student, he likes to call you out and almost borderline make fun of you some days. Other people in my class I've talked to felt the same.
Prof. Khoury's class is challenging but fair. Attend every lecture, engage in discussions, and use resources like unstuck study for essay prep. It's tough but rewarding if you put in the work.
absolutley terrible, by far the worst professor i have ever had, would not reccomend to anyone. beyond judgemntal and he wall specifically call on you if you look as if you dont know the answer. simply rude and disrespectful do not take.
The teacher himself is a pretty funny guy, had him for UNIV 111 and 112. Will cold call students, especially if it seems like they aren't paying attention, so as long as you pay attention he'll hardly call on you. Multiple presentations/essays throughout the semester depending on which UNIV you're in, and group discussions play a big role.
