This guy teaches from a powerpoint that is almost straight out of the book and covers everything in detail. He makes sure every1 understands everything and will explain things in a simple manner. He's even entertaining! I guarantee you you'll laugh at some point in his class! You'll pass with an A as long as you ask questions and keep up! Take him!
Searcy is a huge dork, but it makes class fun. He is easy-going, flexible on HW due dates, helps you understand the material, uses powerpoint straight from the book, and if you don't understand something just tell him and he will always clarify it for you. He's great!! take him
Searcy was an awesome guy. He really made the class interesting. He has an awfully corny sense of humor which I loved. His lectures are really clear and he makes them easy to pay attention to. I would highly recommend taking this class for anyone.

International Economics was an interesting course, but what made it even better was Jake Searcy. He's a young guy, but knows what he's talking about. Plus, he's very funny and entertaining. We had 3 tests and some pop quizzes and homework on Angel. He drops your lowest test grade. Searcy is definitely the guy to take a class with. Take him!!
Great Great Teacher. I loved his class. He makes learning easy. His lectures are direct and to the point. He will help you if you ask. Take his class if you want to make a good grade and not be bored to death. I took it in summer A which is the best time to take it.
He is an excellent teacher! Very funny and willing to help you whenever you want. You need to go to class due to pop quizes. Tests are easy if you study the HW assignments and do the end of chapter questions. He does drop 1 low test grade to help out with your final grade. Took for Summer A and LOVED his class!
Jake Searcy is AWESOME!! He is a young teacher with a lot of charisma and enthusiasm. I really enjoyed his class and I am taking him again next semester!!!
I really don't like economics but the class was very easy. I didn't study at all yet didn't miss a test question the whole year. He goes straight from his powerpoints so if you have a question you need to ask it. Very easy and very quirky teacher, but if you need economics take him.

He makes a very boring class a little better. Textbook used is horrible, a waste of time! He explains things very clearly, and can be funny at times. Tests and quizzes are very hard!
Jake's class was a lot more difficult than most people make it out to be. Yes, he is super funny and entertaining, but the material is tough sometimes to learn. Make sure that you attend class because he gives pop-quizzes, and also make sure to print the slides before lectures this will help tremendously!
Unfortunately, I felt like I had to teach myself the majority of this course. Class was boring and the professor would always go off on a tangent. Homework and quizzes didn't help much with the material on the tests and the wording on the tests was highly confusing.
Searcy is a great professor. He is funny and tries extremely hard to get us involved in economics. He talks about current events and how they relate to our class. I did pretty well in the class At the same time, I read the chapters and went over the power points.To ace this class,Searcy will do his best as long as you put effort. Great class!!

Great professor but was harder than I expected, but to be fair I've never had a economics class before. He is funny, interesting, and smart. You'll enjoy his classes. Doesn't use book, attendance is not mandatory, buying the wallstreet journal is unnecesary, if you need to take a politics class take him but pay attention if you're new to economics
This guy is absolutely terrible, he does not use the book, his test r ALL trick questions, I have never studied in order to make an A but I study for houses and still bomb his test. The class average is like a 54 on test! If you are looking for an easy class this is not your teacher. If you want to remained confused and fail choose Searcy! Terrible
Searcy is a great professor. He teaches you the material in a fun way and usually uses powerpoints. Make sure you print them up and look over them. I took this class over summer and did well. His test are hard but as long as you study you will do fine. Take searcy.
His clarity of what to expect on test is horrible. There would be questions on a subject that was not in the chapters nor his slide shows. The class average was barely passing. The questions he asks on test have a huge disconnect to the exams. Go take Strickland.
Searcy IS NOT an easy professor. His class is the definition of BORING, he tries to make it fun but STILL cant. He tells you whats on the test but theres NOTHING from the review on it. The test will have ALL wrong answers so you wont get that particular question correct. Take someone else if your not a suck up.
Easy professor if you study. He's funny and very clear. Jake wants you to pass, but his test questions may be a little tricky. I got a B+ wished i got an A :( Take this guy for Economics, i'm taking him for Macro now!
Jake is without a doubt the best professor I have had at SF. The tests are short about 20-25 questions, and as long as you read the book and pay attention they are easy. Because of his macro and micro class, I decided to become an Econ Major here at UF. Listen to him, he is very insightful.
I like this class, he's funny and easy to learn from. Don't get it twisted though, you need to stay on top of your work because this class is about understanding Economics and it can be hard. He gives nice examples. Best Teacher hands down.
OK, so I might be weird. This was my favorite class EVER! Prof has a GREAT sense of humor and is a very good teacher. You've got to watch out, though... some exam questions will seem like purposeful tricks, but they're not. He just hasn't learned how to write exam questions with clarity yet. Take him, but pay close attention. It's worth the effort!

He is a free spirited teacher. Grades are based on class average, so he is very fair and will answer all of your questions. Often will post videos on youtube to demonstrate answers.
Dr. Searcy is hands-down THE coolest teacher ever. He's extremely easy to relate to. He makes everything very easy to understand and always makes sure he fully explains a concept so that you understand. Not the easiest tests in the world, but the dude is just freakin' amazing. Take his class, even if you're not an econ major, you won't regret it.
Hardest class after four years in college! This teacher isn't clear at all on the concepts and then changes the exam questions so much from the homework, one can't figure out the answers. The only reason I passed (after failing all three exams) was the class average grade. If everyone else didn't suck, I'd have failed.
Be prepared to spend a lot of time on studying in you want to pass the class.

No doubt, I like Professor Searcy, even though I've never met him face to face as of yet. Not very difficult to pass his seminar class and assignments can be easily completed at the beginning of the semester so that you don't have to rush and finish them at the end. Con: He doesn't grade assignments on time and no feedback, which I didn't like.

This class was extremely difficult. Two exams, 1 final and 6 HW assignments. He takes forever to grade the exams and hard to get in contact with. The entire class he goes over and gives you the answers to the HW assignments. The material is interesting and he is really likeable and funny, it is just a difficult subject and the tests are tricky.
The worst professor I've ever taken. 2 exams/1 final and 8 HW. Waited 2 days before the final to post grade for the 2nd exam. Unclear on his teaching. Personally he does not care for his student success. Make us read useless reading such as freakonomics and buy to the wall street journal. Too bad he is the only one who is teaching the course.

Would anyone take him for this class if he wasn't the only one teaching it? No. The fact that santa fe offers only one professor who teaches this class who lacks communication skills, doesn't reply to emails, and doesnt grade anything in a timely manner, is beyond me. He doesnt take this class or his students concerns seriously.
I had Jake for Seminar 1. The course was not difficult. However, he does not respond to emails nor does he respond to comments on assignments. He literally did not grade our assignments until the last week of the course, which I did not agree with because I had questions. He would be a great professor if he had communication skills, but he doesn't.
Taking this class online was a pain. Having to work all day, then come home to listen to random irrelevant conversations that were off-topic, for 10 to 15 minutes at a time, was very frustrating. I felt disconnected most of the semester. Professor seemed like a cool guy to hang out with though, especially if we're going to china.
Professor Searcy is awesome, no other way to say it. He definitely cares about his students. With that said, homework is worth only 25% of your grade, so it doesn't matter much but is time consuming. Tests are 75%, so if mess up a few (he drops one) you are screwed. If you fall behind at all you mind as well withdrawal, there's no tutors or help.
Definitely would have a strong memory of your foundation economics classes and those will help with this hard class. There is 6 chapters of homework, 2 tests and a final. A Kiva Extra Credit at the end to participate in. *Saves your grade. Definitely would consider your norm to be rocked if not with studying. Tough tests.
Watch lectures first before you do the homework. He goes over the homework in the lectures. Make sure you have contact with a student attending the class incase he doesn't post the lecture in time so they can help explain the homework to you. Multiple choice quizzes. Interesting readings.
He's a good teacher but gets side tracked a lot but I tend to enjoy those moments because we usually end up talking about something random and funny. This is a good class if you like teaching yourself the material or already have an understanding of basic economics.
I got an A in this class, however this particular professor is lazy. He targets students for cheating even if they are not cheating. He focuses more on questioning why students got high exam grades versus focusing on the material and the class itself. Wouldn't personally recommend just be prepared for a class with no structure and to self teach.
Be advised. The subject matter is difficult, but he is an exceptional instructor. I break it down like this...25% comic relief, 25% reality TV, 50% academic lecture. If you have a problem with off the cuff conversations and the use of free form conversations this is not the class for you. Independent study or the use of a tutor is required.
3 homework assignments throughout the semester. All other grades are tests. He gets sidetracked in class during lectures extremely easy. Isn't specific about what is on tests, and no study guide, so good luck going through your notes from class and teaching yourself the textbook on your own time. He is very approachable in office hours however.

I took this class as my first college online class and I did not regret it. I enjoyed the class and Prof. Searcy was easy to listen to online because he made the material interesting. You have to read the textbook and you have to watch the lectures or you will not be successful. I will be taking Searcy for macro if I can.
Professor Searcy made showing up to class easy. He made it feel more like conversations rather than lectures. Definitely recommend him. Just be prepared to do well on the tests because that is the main source of your grade.
Don't take him. My major is microbiology so I just needed this class as an elective. He just has 3 exams which are extremely difficult, the overall of the class on each exam was about 58-60. Nothing I did actually worked on this class. I tried to study ahead of time, I tried to goto his office hours and it didnt work. DONT TAKE HIM.
Be warned: if you do not listen to his lectures and take notes, you will not pass. This course is difficult and all of his exams are difficult, but you can pass if you watch his lectures over and over again. Study the HW questions and lectures and you'll do fine. Prepare early.
Professor Searcy is honestly my favorite teacher I've had thus far in college. His lectures really help you get a grasp on the material and he uses a lot of real world examples and comic relief to make lectures entertaining. Also, the textbook he uses is free so that's a plus. Just make sure to study since tests are a big portion of the grade.
Professor Searcy was definitely one of my favorites. Many people struggled in this class but he always provided a curve for each exam which benefited everyone. He also provided ample extra credit to boost your grade. 3 tests and homework make up your grade. 25% each. Interesting material and discussions. Follow along and not behind and you'll pass!
The class was hard, but not as bad as people make it out to be. Dr. Searcy is always willing to help with office hours. I visited twice and studied and ended with an A. Helps to take him for Micro and go into this class right after. He's always willing to help and genuinely a good guy. He will add in some funny stuff, but focus and you'll do fine.
The material can be very difficult if you don't have a solid foundation in Micro/Macro prior to this class, but he gives lots of opportunity to ask questions and clarify if you don't understand. He goes over the HW in class before it's due, gives extra credit options, and he curves the exam grades. More than fair in grading policies and flexible.
Nice prof, great rapport. Class bad experience. Lectures difficult to watch, prof constantly strays off topic. Lectures, HW, study and practice DO NOT prepare you for exams. Exams are horrible. You must have a deep understanding of economics, a tutor, or other outside resources to pass exams. Exams curved. Extra credit. Very Stressful experience.
Took him for the online class, only homework, and test for the class. Quizlet can be your best friend in this class. Overall, very good class and he provides extra credit.
His lectures sucks. He will take half the class to talk about something that either barely ties into the topic or about his own personal life. Homework is the same as a quiz grade. You dont have to show up for class, he posts a video of it but when half the video isnt on topic, it doesn't help.
Searcy is very LIKABLE. But his lectures are a waste he talks way too much off topic and the quiz and test material has nothing to do with the lecture and none of it can be found in the text book. All of the questions are trick questions its extremely hard. The concepts/way the questions are wordedi study and read the book and Im going to fail.
I really liked professor Searcy as a person but his grading is a little stressful. He is extremely test heavy. You have to do well on the tests to do well in the class. There are no homework grades. Only quiz grades and test grades which is pretty frustrating at times.
Funny guy and very engaging. Lectures are easy to understand; he applies the material to real world examples. Tests are usually curved, but 1-2 days of studying is necessary to pass the tests. I did not find myself needing to take a lot of time to do good in this class.
This class was really hard but he was a great professor. Lots of material and the tests were really hard. t was frustrating how long he took to grade things. I went into the final having no idea what grade I was getting or if I even passed the assignment you have to pass in order to complete the class. However, he was great at explaining things.
Pros: Jake's lectures are topical; he works through HW in-class before it's due; he's always happy to help. Cons: Grading is VERY slow (grades are due today, and 25% of grade + SLO Quiz are not posted); lectures get tangential frequently; material is challenging if you didn't take Econ immediately before; exams are hard to prep for.
Hilarious but will talk about one example endlessly. If you need more direction/instruction maybe not the best but is very helpful if you ask any questions.
Searcy is a good professor. He knows how to teach economics in an engaging way. His lectures can involve tangents that take up time, but you'll do fine if you read the PowerPoints. The exams can be challenging, but he curves them and drops the lowest exam grade. He also offers many extra credit opportunities. Highly recommend taking him!
This class was surprisingly challenging. The content in the homework quizzes was different than the tests, making studying difficult. There are mandatory reading/listening of a book, articles, and podcasts; they are on the tests. You are only graded on Quizzes and Tests, be prepared from the start to work hard and study.
He is really nice but your grade is only based on homework assignments, 3 exams, and an SLO assignment. The exams are very difficult and hard to prepare for with his provided lectures. I worked really hard in this class and still only got a C which is discouraging.
Jake was a great professor explains everything thoroughly, does the homework with you in class before it's due and is always happy to answer any questions that you may have. There are not that many grades overall but his tests are pretty self-explanatory and if you repeat the homework and understand them you are bound to get a good grade.
Mr. Searcy was awesome, I took him for Micro and I really liked him. Very long lectures, they take up the whole class period. Make sure to be following along on the powerpoint and take notes.

Professor Searcy is a funny/ good person but his exams are hard they are 4 of them in total including a final, like 5 hw assignments, and a book you need to read. I honestly studied hard for his class just to get a B, his powerpoints are nothing compared to what is in the actual exams. I suggest picking another macro/micro professor.
Very hard class to take online. Very few assignments and only 3 exams. Each exam is 25% of your grade and his exams are very hard to prepare for. You HAVE to take them in the testing center. He is the only one who teaches it, so taking another teacher isn't an option. Just skirting by will not work in this class so be prepared to work really hard.

Wonderful professor who was always willing to lend a helping hand. One of my favorite teachers i've ever had period. That being said, be ready to study for tests, and don't bank on an easy A. The way he sets up his class prepares you with a strong foundation of basic Economics. If you plan on being an Economics major I strongly recommend taking him
He is a great guy but talks about the most random stuff in class and try's to relate it to microeconomics. He'll talk about aldi and a pawn shop but it won't make sense. Homework and exams aren't impossible but be ready to teach the entire class to yourself. I barely went to class and just studied on my own time and pulled out an A.
Uses class time to talk about random, irrelevant topics. Not a fan of his teaching style. Takes forever to grade work. Would suggest taking another professor, unfortunately he's the only professor at Santa Fe that teaches this course…so..good luck

I personally had a great experience in Searcy's class. He is super fun and engaging, you can tell he loves what he teaches. I would say that he does grade off 10 or so homeworks + tests, but overall he is an extremly easy person to talk to and has his students in his best interest.
I think this teacher has forgotten what it was like to be a student new to economics. Tests questions are too advanced and don't line up with reading material.
Don't let my grade full you. I had to study 6-8 hours a day to get this grade. Thank goodness I didn't have any other classes on my schedule! This was tough for what is supposed to be an entry level class,
If you aren't an economics major, don't take this class. Texts are brutal.
His tests are for those who like mind games, puzzles, and tricks. Questions are not straightforward like those in the textbook or on con Academy. I study 3-4 hours a day to no avail.
Save yourself the headache. Teacher talks a lot but teachers very little. You will have to teach yourself
I don't know how to put it, but this guy isn't a bad guy he just sucks at teaching. The test are super hard and he talks about a lot of irrelevant things. You have to go to testing center and he's the only professor for this class. I'm not sure how I am going to pass
Great professor! Not a difficult class, although the tests are weighted very heavily so make sure to study! Only issues were that there were no study guides for the tests and that we had to take the tests in person rather than online. But he is an incredibly caring professor and is clearly passionate about economics, so I'd absolutely recommend him
I will never ever recommend Prof. Searcy. The tests and discussions don't match. Save your time, and thank me later, if you can, take another instructor like Dr. Poellmitz. While Prof Searcy has a passion for his subject, he talks nonsense and associates it with economics. You'd better be prepared to study the materials by yourself.
Being tested like I'm an economics major really sucks. “Here's four chapters, it's only 100+ pages,” and then provide no guidance or material to help narrow things down are the worst. Pretty much setting us up to fail. Wish me luck... unfortunately, this class is required, so I might have to drop and retake it if things don't improve.
Save yourself from stress. DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT, take this guy. I just want you to expect to learn by yourself, because all his lectures are just a waste of time. Exams were hard and will not help when you reach out to him because his fixation is on the pawnshop store near the school, and connecting it with Economics. Take Dr. Poellmitz instead.
Big thanks to this Professor who ruined my GPA. I have encountered a lot of instructors who were difficult and tough grader in the past but I consistently made it to the Dean's List (As) coz they were all caring. Prof. Searcy, by far the worst Professors I've ever had. Classes are a huge waste of time coz he talked nonsense and connect it to Econ.

He's not good
He doesn't like honorlock but still wants his exams proctored so he will make u join a zoom with ur testing device and a phone, share ur testing screen and show ur testing environment on the phone exams were not hard it was just a very annoying thing to set up and I would here other students while working on exams since they are also on the zoom
His test are not what he talks about whatsoever. He is so overwhelming. The way he does his lectures are so unorganized. Highly don't recommend him.
