Dr.Almy is the new prof. of GWC. I took his Chem 185 in summer. This class was the combination of Dr. Lingi Chen and Dr. James Almy. First half lecture was taught by Dr.Chen. She was terrible. But the second half lecture belongs to Dr.Almy. He was very clear and understanding his material. He was much much better than Dr.Chen about explaining thing
Although he is new at GWC, not mentioning his many prior teaching experiences elsewhere, he quickly showed his ability! His lectures are very straight-forward and easy to understand. It's great how he does powerpoints and use the board for sample problems. He has a very good teaching technique and I would surely recommend him.
Great professor. His powerpoint lectures are clear, he works out problems pretty thoroughly. He tells you exactly what he expects of you on an exam. Took the class over the summer and there was a distinct contrast between him and Dr. Chen (she taught the first 4 weeks). Not exactly the funnest class, but you'll definitely learn the material.
One of the best Chemistry professors out there!
I attend his Chem 180 Lab. Comparing to Prof. Souto, he is way cooler and kinder. He helps us out much more than Prof. Souto. However, you have to take Prof. Souto lecture to attend Prof. Almy lab. lol :))
Great chem professor! He is interesting and funny. Very helpful!!! Dr. Almy will go way out of his way to help his students.
Professor Almy seems like he would be a good teacher. However, the chem 110 program is horrific. It's a joke. Almy is very clear, nice, and helpful. If he did not have to teach the way chem 110 is set up at GW he would be great! It's a self taught class. If you HAVE to take chem 110 at GW take it with Almy because at least he is funny and helpful!
I have no idea if Almy could even be a good teacher since I learned everything by MYSELF.I am getting an A bc I work my %^& off.I would NOT recommend taking him.His lectures are useless which is why nobody goes. Coming from a UC, maybe I was spoiled with some amazing chem profs so when I compare my prior chem prof to Almy, i think Almy is terrible
If you can't learn by yourself, then DON'T take this class...You MUST learn everything by yourself w/ little help from Almy.I don't know why i paid tuition here if i just learned by listening to a video every week.I feel bad for the people who have never had a college chem class prior to taking this class. All i heard were complaints every week.
This class is basically an online class that you have to be in class to do. You have 3 teachers who are no help. Lecture is useless because he goes so fast you don't have time to write anything down. The weekly quizzes are filled with irrelevent info and you don't have enough time to finish all the math. Take this class at OCC.
Almy is a really nice guy. I highly recommend him. What you should know before entering this class though, is that it is not set up like a typical class. There is only one short lecture a week and every week you have to complete a syllabus which you have to work on in the open lab Mon-Thurs. So, there is a lot of self-learning going on. Almy i
Almy is always very helpful and good at explaining things to you. It is definitely a tough class which requires a LOT of studying. Expect to work your tail off.
This is not an easy class, and by not easy I mean impossible to pass with an "A". Believe me, I'm a student who gets A(s)in all of my classes so do not feel confident enough to take him!Funny thing is, material is not difficult but his quizzes and finals are extremely tricky and difficult! Again don't take him, save yourself!
He is extremely helpful and very good in teaching. I worked my ass off all semester long in Fall 2008, even had a privit tutor that I used 3 times a week. I got an A. It is posible but very difficult to get an A, because this class is on line- based.
James Almy teachings is ridiculous. He is rude, uncaring, mean person. He doesn't listen to his student's needs. He only focus on who is cheating on his class. He makes you do homework only during school lab hours and you cannot do it at home because that's considered cheating. If you do it ahead of time he will rip your paper.
Someone must have gotten their papers ripped up. Dr Almy is the best teacher I have had at GWC. He is clear and very helpful. This is not an easy class but Dr. Almy does a great job and I highly recommend him.
Now I understand who a person he is. I feel much much better. I must say thank you.
this professor is really good at teaching. he posted up lecture slides ahead of time and taught the class with his own examples. he doesnt just teach out of the book. i took him for a chem 185 class in the summer. he made a summer class really fun.
good professor, the exams are based on his lectures, so attend the lectures and you'll be fine. he's very helpful and made it easy to understand the subject
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!Probably the hardest chem teacher on GWC campus. If u have any kind of life don't expect to keep it with this guy. He's so concerned w/ people cheating that he makes you come into lab to finish your like 20 page weekly packets. They get checked by his assistant.Every problem must be right on every page 2 get 5 pts!!..I dropped.
Hey guys, I'm planning to take him for Chem 185 in this summer, I'd really appreciated if you can let me know which chapters from Chemistry, 10e by Chang book and homework from Almy's class so I can prep for his class. Thanks!!
he's not an easy teacher but he's good, he'll help you and work with you!! you need to be accurate and work hard for his class
His exams are quite tricky so you have to know your material very very well. I took him over the summer and thought that his exams were not fair. You really need to study really hard for his exams.
he's fair, and cares about his students. Easy B, work hard to get an A. Take him !!
I got an A without trying hard. He's always there to help you out if you have any question. Nice Professor !
He is so nice! Great professor ever!!!
Hardest class I have ever taken in my life. He is a good teacher and you learn a lot but he made it too hard. My life this summer was basically go to chemistry come home eat and do more chemistry 24/7. He is a GPA MURDERER! Take him if you want your gpa to be ruined :'(
He teaches primarily for the money, not because he actually cares to help students, and it shows. If you don't get an A on the final and at least an average of a B+ on the five tests, wave bye-bye to your A.
dr. Almy is fair, funny and cares for his students. his tests are quite tricky but expected. i liked him actually.this class is no easy A but in the end you will feel rewarding for sure.
I had a 4.0 before I took this class. Well all I have to say now is there goes my scholarships...
I took this class for summer and I have to say this was not the easiest class to take over the summer, this class i think is a fairly easy B but for an A you have to be willing to work your ass off so if your obssesed with your GPA only then take this class during fall, summer will be hard no matter what because it is fast pace.
Dr. Almy is a very down to earth professor. However he is really hard on labs very clear and helpful. Really hard for an A but a little easier for a B.
The Chem 110 class is different from a traditional course. His quizzes are somewhat difficult if you don't study. It's definitely not too hard to get an A in the class, especially with extra credit. The labs are not too bad. Know the study guide and go over the questions you missed on quizzes and you'll be fine for midterm and final.
Dr. ALmy is the best professor on campus. The way he handles this course is very logical and reasonable, which extremely helps students master the materials. If you are really willing to learn chemistry and want to move onto next level, take Dr. Almy?s class.
I had Dr. Almy for lab. He was very helpful and polite. He is not easy but I think he grades fair. Do your lab write up well and you should do fine. I actually don't dread the three hour lab that I had.
He gives packets that have to be signed off each setion. This class is very time consumming. You have to work on your packet in class, but out of class time. His grading is fair. As long as you study your packet and memorize everything he note you need to it's a pretty decent class. You have a quiz every lab hour!
I hated this class with a passion. So time consuming, but I studied hard and I got an A. I miss this class so much now. Dr. Almy is a very good professor. Thank you Dr. Almy you are great!
I've hated this teacher to bone!
I also hated this class with a passion, but Dr. Almy is an amazing person! A lot of work, but paid off in the end when I had a few F's on tests. Didn't buy book and borrowed or rent from school when I needed it
This class is extremely hard and takes a lot of your extra free time. Lectures are useless except for the points and the quizzes are very hard. Although I despise this class because I think chemistry is very hard, Dr Almy does a good job explaining the packet and is patient and helpful. This class is very challenging and frustrating + alot of info
All other reviews are very accurate. I wouldn't take this professor simply because he doesn't give partial credit on questions that have multiple answers. If you only got 3 out of 4 right you get 0 points. It really affects your grade
Dr. Almy is the hardest teacher you will have! he is very strict and does not curve his grades. I took him over the summer and had to drop with a W because it was too difficult and time consuming. donoot take him!
Got a B in his summer class. He is a great teacher, but do not expect his tests to be easy. I love this guy, if you study hard then you will survive his class. Not for students who arent serious. He is a MUCH better professor than Kate Green.
Dr Almy's class was extremely difficult. You cannot EVER miss class or a lecture especially cause its over the summer. He does not do partial point which is how i got my horrible grade. He is one of the toughest graders I have had and does not explain labs well enough. I recommend taking this class in the fall.
Dr. Almy is an extremely difficult teacher with no interest in passing his students. He is one of the most difficult professors I have ever had and I am a graduate from UCI. He messed up my GPA from his summer class. I really regret taking him. he is funny though
The WORST teacher I have ever had! I can't really call this guy a teacher. I watched videos on You Tube so I could at least try and understand the subject and basically taught myself. His tests and quizzes are ridiculously hard! It's a begninng course at a JC, this guy acts like he's teacing at a University... DO NOT TAKE HIM!
Almy's class isn't easy. You'll need to dedicate time. Great enthusiasm for chemistry, very nice professor. His class is structured so that you can easily compare/contrast different compounds so that every week, you learn the same basics in the same order for different compounds. Caution: The final exam is MUCH more demanding than the midterm.
Extremely difficult class. Exams are long, difficult and to be finished within an hour. Many great students are barely getting C's. Do yourself a favor and avoid taking him!
Almy's class was difficult. He actually explains material well, but his tests are tough. He gives out practice tests, but they're usually pretty different from the real test. His quizzes are generally easy though & similar to the HW. He curved, which helped me a lot. But I don't think he usually curves that much. Lab & attendance points will help.
Nice guy but doesn't explain content well to those that are struggling. He says he is able to answer questions in the lab but I never once got the chance to speak to him. Very difficult, if you aren't good at science then beware!
He's way better than Green. Yes, it's a lot of work. It's chemistry, it is not the easiest subject. If you work hard, you can manage a B. If you're natural at it, you can get an A no problem. I'm not the best at chemistry but I pulled it off. He is willing to help and gives good reviews for his tests. Recommend.
Dr. Almy is a phenomenal teacher! His class is not easy tough. Do the suggested hw and the practice tests. Attend lecture and print the powerpoint so you can follow along in class. I wish he taught chem 185. Overall nice guy too!
He is a super nice guy, I took his class last semester, and got an A. His lecture slides are very helpful. If you study hard, B is easy. I recommend him
For students who can dedicate time and effort into the class, Dr.Almy's class is highly rewarding. For students who are simply trying to maintain their GPA's without actually doing anything, then do not take professor Almy. His general chem class entails 9 quizzes, 6 exams, and a cumulative final. For chemistry majors, I truly recommend taking him
Went from loving chem to hating it in a matter of weeks.horrible teaching. laughs at all his lame chem jokes alone. corny. unclear. no time to complete test...stay away from his class and go to occ for science
tests are 1 hour long and you dont even have time to think in them you just have to go as fast as possible. 6 tests 9 quizzes and 1 HARD cumm final! Hes a great guy however in lab a tough grader. In tests he gives lotis of particle cred! I your afraid to take the class and not do good then ur wrong. You can do it!
WORST PROFESSOR EVER!! Almy is the worst professor I have EVER taken, and by far the RUDEST. Stay away from this professor and take chem at occ or at a different college. Now I know why he was fired from a university. He couldn't find a place that would hire him other than gwc.
This guy is brutal and has a slight arrogance/condescending attitude, however his passion for chemistry is very strong, and one will really learn the material really well, though his tests are really brutal, took him in the summer and got a B, lots of people got a B and passed the class
Solid lecturer. Quizzes and tests' difficulty level were fair for the most part. The last questions on his tests were always brutal. Just do the suggested homework and practice exams plenty of times and you should at least get a C. Labs weren't terrible. Warning: only 50% of the class stuck it out for the entire term. Overall, not a bad professor.
He is really clear about what he wants and about how hard the class is. If you want a good grade (a B or A) you HAVE to put in the effort, no BS. His grading for lab is not that easy but is an easy B. The only hard thing about his class are his tests and final. Each consecutive test will test critical thinking skills to the max.
Horrible. Absolutely horrible. Purposely makes tests hard and does not give you enough time to finish the entire exam - I swear he just wants to watch people fail. Power points are basically pointless, and you have to spend $100 on a clicker to get attendance points. Just go to OCC for chemistry and avoid a W (or worse)
Online homework is tedious. He's a very nice teacher and jokes around with his students. Lab is okay just try to do them right. The only bad thing is his tests. They are considered hard, but try to study the practice exams and everything he tells you to know. They are almost identical. Also work on significant figures.
He is horrible! DO NOT take him. He is not helpful in any way. if you need help all he will tell you is to study more. his test are impossible to do unless you just know chem already. Take the other teacher or go somewhere else! His class average is a 60%
DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!!! He is the worst teacher in the entire world. He is rude and his test are almost impossible. He sets you up for failure and enjoys it. He is discouraging too. If you do bad on your first test he will tell you that's the grade you will get in his class so basically you should not bother. Half the class dropped.Go somewhere else!
Wow, are his exams killer... particularly the 4th exam. Study the lecture slides thoroughly; do the suggested hw & practice exams. You MUST know the material inside and out for every exam. He is very picky about grading on labs and exams, so be extra careful! Otherwise, he was very helpful in lab and a fantastic lecturer! Definitely take him :)
He is not a good teacher at all. I am a chem major and I have taken chem at a four year university and this class was so much harder. You can know all of the material and be able to do it but he sets his test up so if you miss one little thing everything from then on will be wrong. He is also rude and not helpful at all!
Dr. Almy is not rude at all, in fact he is quite friendly. And hilarious. Some people just take his sarcasm too literally. He is very helpful and gives LOTS of partial credit. If you know how to do the problem but mess us somewhere along the way he gives you most of the points. He notices when you do well and writes nice things on your exam :)
The other rating are true unfortunately. Almy is very hard and it may seem like he is fair during his lectures because of his clarity. Read the book and memorize the slides, and if possible find another professor. Another thing is that he is not approachable when it comes to chemistry which makes his class that much more frustrating.
Overall, I really enjoyed his class.I think he is extremely helpful if and only if you actually come to him and ask questions. His tests are fairly hard. They require you to think outside the box a little bit. didn't even use the book. JUST DO THE HW, SUGGESTED HW, PRACTICE EXAM, LISTEN TO LECTURES AND YOU'LL BE FINE.
He is not a good teacher. If you go to him for questions he does not help all he will say is to study more. That's his answer to everything to study. He is also very arrogant and his test are actually horrible. He does not prepare you very well for them. He give easy examples in class and hw but the test is way different.
Very funny and charming; yes his tests are very hard, but if you do what he says to do (hw, sugg hw, practice tests, read) you can do well! He will help with anything you need to understand better. He hangs out after class if you need help. He gives tons of partial credit and consistency points. His class is hard to prep you for later sections.
The concepts of the class are easy to understand, but his tests are unbelievably difficult and punishing. I took the Chem130 course prior before this and received an A, but this class is something else. Textbook not needed (Everything based on PP slides). Overall, if I had the opportunity, I would take the other professor at GWC despite the hours.
Don't take his class. It is the hardest class I have ever take.
His analogy for the first day of class: "Lecture 1 will be on how to use a hammer and nails. Lecture 2 will be on how to use a saw. For the test, I'll ask you to make a birdhouse. Even though you haven't done this difficult task, the basics will help you accomplish it." He is very clear and helpful but the tests are impossible. Take someone else.
The test are pretty difficult, and tough grader as well. You will need to spend a lot of time studying outside of class just for getting a passing grade.
The material, homework and lab work he presents are all understandable and fair. But the tests are absolutely ridiculous!!!! I have nothing against the guy. He's always been relatively pleasant. But after his tests I find myself cursing his name! He needs to understand we are not all Chem majors and this is not the only class we are taking!!!!!
Yes, this class is hard, but if you study and do the suggested homework and work hard, you'll get a really good grade. His lectures are extremely easy to understand and he gives credit whenever he can. If you want a professor to consider that you have other classes, don't take the class. If you think you don't have time for this class be realistic
Test are so hard! The material is easy but how he gives it is difficult. Not a good teacher, over half the class has dropped. The average on test is about a D he thinks its his students fault and not his. Don't take him go to OCC!
Tests are hard. Half of the class failed many of the tests including me. The class is overall easy to understand, but his tests kill. Make sure to study and do all the suggested homework. The practice exam is a must do too. Exams in this class are crazy hard.
Come prepared with chem 100 or 130 and pre-calculus or above, then the class is not all that hard. Dr. Almy is a great lecturer and provides all the material you need. The trick is that most of the material is not required work and you have to reach out and take the knowledge for yourself. Kindergarten is over. No spoon-feeding here.
This is the hardest class I'd taken. Barely had time for any other class bc there's so much material. Tests are very difficult. First half is like the homework, and other is mostly critical thinking to test how thorough your knowledge is (most points). I have learned a lot in this class and he's also very helpful! Be prepared to have no life.
Lectures were clear. Tests are very difficult; you must do the practice test and suggested hw. Really strict in lab grading but very helpful. You don't need the book because everything is based off lecture slides. Very knowledgeable and sometimes quite funny. Office hours were extremely beneficial for me. Nice guy and great professor.
Hardest class I have taken. If you do well though it is very rewarding. Dr Almy is an amazing teacher and his lecture is enjoyable, especially when he does demonstrations. You HAVE to do the practice tests and practice homework if you want to pass this class. Be prepared to be constantly studying. Tests are extremely difficult and stressful.
Study guides he posts online doesn't really reflect his exams. This class is even harder than the classes I take at Cal State Long Beach. Save yourself the trouble and never attend GWC. Most of GWC science classes are seriously 3x harder than other community colleges. Compares to Calstates and UC, GWC only put students down rather than help them.
Bombed the final. You have to study like crazy. Not an easy C. His lecture powerpoints, suggested hw, online hw, and practice tests are what get you through the class. Go over them vigorously and you will have a chance. He is a funny guy and intimidating but don't be afraid to ask him questions. I think because I didn't ask him ques. I failed.
Almy is a very good professor, especially when it comes to his lectures. Everything is clear. He is helpful if u ask for help. However, tests are super duper hard! He is picky on lab. Make sure u do suggested hw, online hw and practice tests. I tried so hard to get B. Be prepared to spend most of ur time on this class!
He gives out extremely hard exams, to get a passing grade you have to do the Suggested HW + Practice Exams and review the materials daily as well. Take the other professor if you can, my friends told me he is much better.
There are topics he explains well and some not so well (like the physics related stuff) NO ONE got an A on 3rd test. 2 people got B's. over 12 of class failed & dropped after that. He does give practice exams though. MUST do those to do at least ok on test. DO SUGGESTED HW. Don't really need txtbk. If you can, choose diff prof. good luck! no curve
Super anal about everything, likes to humiliate you in lab. Not much time given on tests. Doesn't slow down pace if people aren't getting it. Makes you feel stupid when talking to you. Best way to get through the semester is learning everything on your own so that he doesn't discourage you.
This class was extremely hard, even though over half the students failed the 3rd test he still won't curve his tests. Felt like he enjoy failing his students.
This teacher is the worst teacher I ever had. I am taking his class right now. All of my lab partners dropped the class. Don't even think about to take his class. Because of him, some students changed their majors.
This class showed me how I, as a student, needed to change in order to be successful in my studies. I appreciate science more than ever, especially chemistry which I had no interest in previously, and I get more out my subsequent classes because I now take an active role in my studies. Highly recommended for those who want to be challenged,
His class is super hard. You need to study every day at least 3 hours to get a passing grade. Take the other teacher if you can, you will not regret taking this advice.
The class is overall amazing even though I did not pass it. His test are very very difficult and you need to do practice exams, homework, and suggested homework if you want to keep up. I would not take this class at the same time as other difficult classes if I were you. Extremely difficult though is challenging and changed me as a student to work
While I was taking his class I would curse his tough grading. I was always stressed for his exams. I would work my hardest for an exam, study for days on end going over practice problems, practice tests, and the homework, and would still only end up with a C or D on the exam. However, I now KNOW the material. I actually want to take him for Chem B.
This guy lives to be respected by his students cause I don't think he gets it anywhere else. He approaches teaching not as though he's there to help you reach your goal, but rather like you'll have to get past him to achieve. You can ace every hmwrk and practice exam, but his tests are timed and designed to trick you. It's a hostile experience.
He actually makes you WORK for your grade. This is a TRUE college level course. The exams test your ability to apply concepts; do practice exams+suggested HW. He answered all my questions with questions. Never just handed me an answer. He makes you think. He doesn't treat us like robots, he treats us like we have brains. I have much respect for him
he is very helpful. the lecture is funny and easy to understand. He will give you a series of questions in the exam, which mean that you need to use the answer of question A to work on question B, C.. However, if you get wrong in somewhere, which cause all of the next questions are also wrong, he will follow your work and grade your understanding.
Awful learning environment. Don't expect any clarity, in fact expect to feel ridiculed if you don't know the material. Almy is extremely unhelpful, get a full time tutor. If you aren't already proficient in chemistry at the 180 level DO NOT take his class, he just reads his lecture slides without any teaching ability. This will lower your GPA!!!
Not a good professor. He assigns easy homework problems, but when the tests come around the questions are extremely difficult; making answering them almost impossible. The tests are timed short so even if you can work your way around his problems, you probably won't even have enough time to even finish the exam. Class average was a 50%
As a lecturer, he makes chemistry easy to understand. But his exams are another story -- the kind that'll make you cry. If there's anything I've learned from Almy, it's "Practice, practice, PRACTICE" and "If you're not suffering, then you're not learning." Most students expect to breeze through life, but Almy will make you work hard for your grade.
His class is very hard, this is the hardest class I took in my life.
the worst teacher I've ever had the misfortune of having. I have no doubt in my mind that this teacher gets off to failing students. obviously doesn't get respect anywhere else in life, so he tries to get it from students instead. times his tests for some reason, probably for added pleasure, making it impossible to ever fully complete one
Took Chem180 in Spring 2015. He's a good teacher, makes things very clear, just need not to be intimated and ASK if you don't understand, he will answer your question. His test are extremely difficult, do practice tests over and over till you can finish it in 45 mins, do all suggested problems he posts. He prepared me well for chemB and Ochem.
Almy does his best to make sure that you KNOW the material. He is very misunderstood in my opinion, because he is more than willing to help and no one gives him that credit. Be prepared to work your hardest for his class, but going to his office hours WILL help you. You will learn how to survive a tough college class. But don't take him for lab.
He's a witty and funny guy, but he is no nonsense about his curriculum, his tests, and his grading. He lets you know all of that up front so it's no secret even to him that he's an incredibly tough grader. Try to keep up because the final is cumulative. Don't bother buying the text.
ot a good professor. He assigns easy homework problems, but when the tests come around the questions are extremely difficultHis class is super hard. You need to study every day at least 3 hours to get a passing grade. Take the other teacher if you can, you will not regret taking this advice.
He's a good Professor. Do all his suggest homeword + practice test, you probably get B for this class.
Chem 180 with James Almy is only as hard as you make it to be. He is very knowledgeable and friendly. His tests are extremely difficult. I took Chem 180 with Calculus 2 and another 3 unit class and the time management was a challenge. I do not recommend taking Chem 180 if you are taking other studio classes and/or labs. Otherwise Yes! Good luck!
He's very knowledgable and is willing to help when you need it. He's a stickler in terms of grading and will absolutely deduct ANY points he can from your labs or exams. The exams are designed to be finished only if you know what to do ( you don't have extra time to "figure things out"). If you want to get an A, be prepared to work hard for it.
Professor Almy always wants us to do well in his class. He gives you all the material necessary to pass with an A, and leaves it up to you to work for it. He welcomes us to come to his office hours and will always try to answer your questions.
Dr. Almy is great!
Dr. Almy is great! I think he is the best professor for many reasons. He is well prepared for his teaching. He provides all tools to set us to succeed. He is very professional. He respects and cares his students.(He remembers students names!)... He offers his best as a professor, it's our decision whether or not to offer our best as a student.
Great teacher! If you want a no nonsense class that will actually make you work for your grade because you actually want to learn chemistry. he is your man.
Professor Almy is the best professor ever! it is a tough class and requires a lot of input, but as long as you do what is required, you will be fine in this class.
Dr. Almy is an amazing professor, but very tough as he is passionate about chem. There's 6 total tests, 5 exams and a final. Get into study groups, do ALL the hw, suggested hw, practice exam, and do it all repeatedly. Repetition is key. He is probably one of the toughest professors you'll ever take, but he prepares you for any other course.
Dr. Almy is the best professor I'v had at GWC. I really enjoyed his class. His lecture is well designed. With the ppt and in class practice problem, i felt I learnt a lot during lecture. The best outcome would be preview PPT before and review after. The exams were tough, but suggested hw and sample exams were provided to help preparation.
I just want to say that even that I am not chemistry major and I do not need any more chemistry classes for my major, if Dr. Almy teaches chemistry 185, I want to take it. I dislike chemistry before, but chemistry with Dr. Almy is not boring at all. I really enjoyed chem180 class, thank you professor Almy!
Teaches as though we're a class of seasoned master students. Good lecturer, but the homework is far more complicated than problems given in class. Grading standards unreasonable for the mere hour given for tests. 95% of the class ends up turning in unfinished tests. Youtube will be your best friend. Avoid at all costs-failing rate exceeds 50%.
Best professor I've had. Also one of the most difficult courses I've taken. Be prepared to put in time and effort to do well in his class. This class will force you to become a better student, which is what Dr. Almy wants.
Dr. Almy is prob the best chem professor I've had so far. His lectures are intensive and his practice problems are nothing like the exam but he challenges you to be a better student and curves! I went to every single class and bothered him during office hours in order to get my B. he genuinely cares for his students and his jokes are funny.
What a great guy, Almy is. Bit odd, but very caring. Chem 180 is a hard class, especially the summer course, but I'm glad that he was the one to teach. Lectures are excellent, very well explained. His tests are hard, but he prepares you well for them. The work you put in is what you get out. Watching videos helps a lot to understand concepts.
If you want to choose the best professor and the most interesting and helpful chemistry class, please choose Dr Almy. He is the most caring, funniest and most knowlegable professor that I have ever met. His tests require a lot of critical thinking and you won't regret to take his class to prepare for your future. I'll miss his class so much!!
he's a very lecture heavy class, if you miss one lecture, you'll fall very behind. participation also matters, and you have to use money buying a clicker for points. his tests are different from what he lectures, and the homework is also harder. when you visit his class hours, he seems like he's in a rush so you feel uneasy to ask again. Dont take!
if you haven't taken a chem class before this, don't take! it's chem180 but he teaches as if though we've all come from a chem background. lectures way too fast before you can understand the material and the tests are very different from lectures. you MUST study outside of class to pass. very difficult course, dont recommend.
Professor Almy is VERY DIFFICULT. It's very hard if you don't have any chemistry background at all. There are 6 lectures exams and 1 final exam. He drops the lowest lecture exam. If you want at least a B, you must study and do practice problems and go tutoring/ office hours outside of class..
Take him if you actually want to learn chemistry. His exams are BRUTAL but in the end you'll end up learning a lot. He clearly specifies in the beginning what you have to do to earn a good grade in the class. Studying is a must. homework is pretty easy. I don't think anyone ever finishes any of his exams time.
He is a good professor. If you do want to learn Chemistry and Chemistry is needed for your major, I strongly recommend you to take him. He is a caring professor and is always pleased to help you out with questions. His test is hard but you'll end up understand a lot about Chem. I love his class since he is fair and helpful.
Goes through the lectures pretty quick and just reads of the powerpoint slides. When doing an example he won't explain in detail, he'll just write down the steps and expect you know what to do. His exams are every 2 weeks and are very difficult if you are not going through the notes everyday and doing the homework.
I took him fall of 2015 and he is still my fav. I am currently taking the PCAT exam and he prepared me VERY well for the Chem section. I am actually studying his notes rather than the prep book. He is a VERY hard professor but chem classes also get MUCH harder after 180, so struggling here is not a good sign if your major is heavily based on chem.
I had to take Dr. Almy's class twice and I don't regret it one bit. His lectures are amazing and if you listen well it'll shave off hours of studying, though you still have to study A LOT outside of class and practice as much as you can. Follow his "blueprint for excellence"as much as possible, be honest with yourself, and you'll be fine.
The hardest class I have ever taken. Would not recommend him for anyone. Find another professor.
Everything you learn builds upon previous concepts (literally), so theres not a single thing you can afford to not understand. Imagine a snowball accumulating more snow as it rolls down hill -- thats what the class material is like! Avoid this class if you have a job or some other extracurricular activity, you wont have enough time to study.
Dr. Almy gives hard exams created with more challenging questions than he goes through during lecture. His lectures are just slides, not written out on a board, which can be difficult for people who need to see it done by hand. His "study guides" material is the usually opposite of what will be on the exam. However, he is a great lab instructor.
The class is hard, but not impossible. Just do homework and study. I didn't use the textbook and still got a solid A. Most of these bad reviews are by people that are not cut out for STEM. If you're serious about school then you'll do fine in his class. Almy is a great professor that prepares you very well for his exams; drops the lowest exam too.
Professor Almy is very caring and is willing to help you during office hours. Exams are difficult but definitely do-able if you read the chapters aside from going over the lecture notes. The class is going well so far. I'll have an update at the end of the semester.
He is very friendly and a good teacher, but... the exams are unfairly difficult. For most people, this will be the hardest class you have ever taken -- you will be questioning your intelligence all semester! (Tip: if you want at least a C, TAKE THE CHEM130 PREP CLASS. Also, pre-learn all lecture material a day beforehand or else youll be lost.)
If you get grade C at this class, You will get an A at OCC. Dont take this class if Chem is your GE. The average grade of my class was 48% (Below F) But if you want to challenge yourself or you plan to apply for Medical School, this class will be helpful because Dr. Almy is a very good and caring teacher, & his tests are similar to MCAT tests.
Professor Almy is an amazing chemistry professor. I never had to study so hard in my life to get an A. Anatomy and Physiology is easier compared to his class! If you want to at least get a B, DO the suggested hw, study session worksheets, and practice exam on repeat(1 week before each exam).
the readings were difficult sometimes. He is a great teacher. His exams were very difficult and the exams of practice are not similar to what will come in the exam.
Professor Almy is a good professor but takes chemistry very seriously. He definitely prepares you for what it is like to take upper division STEM courses. He has high expectations for his students to learn on your own. IMPORTANT NOTE his exams are timed and you get exactly 1 hour! If you dont know your stuff don't expect to do well.
If you dont do the suggested homework, the practice exams, and maybe even read the book for better understanding (I didnt), you will most likely barely pass the class. You only get an hour to take the exams, which are mostly essay style questions, so its hard to complete them in the time frame. I honestly feel defeated after taking this class.
Prof. Almy takes his Chem more seiously. Timed exams with 9 pages which are overloaded and difficult. Practice exams will not come out the same on rea exam. 6 regular exams weigh 50%. I rarely get over 90% of his exam, hes so picky and a tough grade. He makes us write the same way he wants even the content is the same, he still takes points off
Dr. Almy is relentless when it comes to grading, and it truly shows how honest a student is with their study ethic. Previous concepts will pop up in each exam, and the final is comprehensive. Try not to procrastinate! Stay diligent with your studies; its the most important aspect of this course! (:
This was my first chemistry class, and I really enjoyed Professor Almy's lectures (more than any other class, I am well into organic chemistry now). He had great science puns every day, funny analogies that helped you remember the content, and fair tests. He was definitely difficult, but I enjoyed learning the content from him.
This a class that will push you and constantly challenge you until you get the materials. Professor Almy is a great professor and knows his materials very well. My word of advice for future classmates: Constantly do the textbook problems, go to the study sessions, and do the practice exams in one hour on repeat two weeks before the exam.
Dr. Almy is very knowledgeable and professional at what he does. However, exams will be immensely difficult but doable on the third exam out of six. One exam per week. Only gives us one hour for each exam. Do practice exams and suggested hw and make sure you study repetitively! You'll learn a lot, but exams are ridiculously hard. Put in time!!!
Here's how Almy curved the final grade requirements for Spring 2019, but they'll be different for you depending on how your class performed: A88.0, B75.6, C58.4, D40.0 (He doesn't want anyone to barely miss the next letter grade, hence why they look randomly specific.) Also, the final exam contains a lot of questions from the previous exams.
Dr. Almy is a great professor in that his lectures are enganging and comprehensible and the expectations for the class are clearly defined, but he has too high of expectations. I do not recommend taking this class in the summer. On top of lots of hours spent in class, there is homework every night, lab every day, and a difficult test every week.
If you have not taken a prior chemistry course or unfamiliar with chemistry do not take his class it is extremely hard. His tests are impossible and he really challenges you it is nearly impossible to get an A or B in his class, however if you want to get a C or higher make sure to do the online HW, Suggested Hw, and Practice Exams
Amazing professor. Of course it's hard its chemistry! If you don't try you'll do poorly of course. I'm not a super genius or anything but I got a B because I took advantage of his resources, kept up with material and he's very helpful and organised compared to other chem professors. He makes the class fun and the daily chem jokes are great...
Look Chem 180 is a really really hard class. The material is very hard to understand but Dr. Almy knows how to talk about it. Dr. Almy is the best professor I have ever had in any subject and very clearly teaches the material. Seriously amazing, his rating should be higher. Diamond in the rough. Listen to every word he says.
Class was somewhat challenging but doable. But the professor himself, well... He articulates well and explains concepts fine, but his manner of speech was odd and he isn't the most helpful. At times when I saw him answering students' questions he came off as very condescending. Definitely an off vibe guy but at least he does his job.
He's a nice guy but the class is tough. you better study for a good grade or else accept the C or retake with a D. Im retaking it w a diff prof. go to all the lectures, do the hw and study the practice exams 10 times if you want a good grade
STAY AWAY FROM THIS PROFESSOR AT ALL COSTS! He's very condescending and UNHELPFUL. He posts prerecorded lecture videos and expects you to learn on your own. He WILL NOT help you on homework problems. There's no way to be able to pass the class with his ignorance. I've heard a lot about him before attempting the class and it's true!
Almy is organized but a tough grader, expects you to do everything perfectly by his rules. His exams are ridiculous, he gives one hour to complete the entire thing which he claims is the amount of time you "should" finish by. Most students in my class haven't been able to finish the first 2 exams we've taken which are supposed to be the easiest...
AVOID THIS CLASS IF YOU WANT A LIFE. There is homework due everyday that can't be done without watching the lectures every day (1-2 hours). He grades the labs extremely hard and a lot of the material isn't even taught so it requires outside learning. With tests nearly every week it's impossible to have spare time with this class. DO NOT TAKE.
He's a tough grader, if you do not do your labs exactly to what he asks, you will get points off most of your work. You get 1 hour to complete your exams and sometimes with 60 questions... how ridiculous?? Given one minute to finish a test without having time to go back and check your work. Would not recommend taking him.
this guy doesnt deserve the "professor" title. there was an exam where we were unable to read the periodic table since it was blurry and a lot of people failed it, however since one person out of the whole class managed to get an A, there was nothing he could do.
This class is designed for you to fail. The tests are way too hard with way too little time to complete them. He grades the labs extremely hard and is not forgiving at all. Makes you complete pre lab assignments to "better your understanding" but doesn't grade them till you finish the lab so there is no point. Do not take this class ever.
Taking Chem 180 with James Almy during the summer is definitely not something you want to do to yourself. He is not very understanding and he holds grudges. So many exams and they worth so much of your grade. But luckily everybody seem to do pretty bad in his class, except for that one person who always ruin the curve.
Gen Chem isn't easy and Dr. Almy doesn't make it any easier. Took it during Summer 2020 and was VERY fast-paced. Exams are brutally tough and there's never enough time. HWK + Labs are due every day which leaves little time to study. If you don't keep up from day 1, you're pretty much doomed. Avoid if possible, take with caution if necessary.
I put in minimal effort and my final grade reflects better than the effort I actually put in. Chem 180 is a whole semester class that has been squeezed into 8 weeks, something that students seem to forget. I dropped the class Spring for Summer, labs being online was easier. All the reviews below are accurate in terms of workload but super spiteful.
In casual conversation, he's ok and attempts to connect with students but disregards students' concerns. He stopped responding to my messages informing him about problems with proctoring software and refused to address the issue. Class average is terrible but since 62% is "far better than normal" no curve. Video content solid tho would take again.
THIS WAS THE WORST PROFESSOR I'VE EVER HAD! He was rude, and condescending He was not helpful at all, and he didn't have an empathy for his students. He is everything wrong with the education system. Teacher's are there to help you and not make you feel worse about yourself. He doesn't deserve the title of "professor". Don't take him for your sake.
Honestly, Prof Almy is unnecessarily difficult. He has no empathy for the students who are struggling with the transition to online learning. I wouldn't take this class with him ever again. Yes, he considers a D class average "pretty solid".
Dr. Almy is one of the worst professors I have ever taken. He is not respectful to his students and is not very helpful when you ask questions. He is extremely picky on lab assignments and his lab for data are very shaky so it is hard to read accurate data. His tests are heavy and his final exam was extremely difficult. I do not recommend him.
DO NOT take this class if you don't want to get an F. His class is very rough. His exams are super heavy and the final was very very hard. You will spend a lot of time doing your homework but it does not even help you in the exam or improve your grade. Take my words seriously :)!
Do no recommend. The exams are TOUGH (material is okay but you have such little time to answer). Around 60% average or less each time. No curves but he will lower the class grade scale at the end. Overall, the class is doable if you grind. Redo the practice problems and hw! Final exam will be cumulative but is mostly questions from old exams.
The lecture videos we had to watch were pretty long and kind of hard to understand, we also had approx two to three homework every week that each took about an hour and a half and were even more complicated than the lectures. The homework platform does allow up to 30 tries on most answers, so you can keep trying (or guessing) until you get it right
He is a solid choice. The course is not easy to begin with, so be prepared to work. I would take the professor again.
All the negative reviews regarding Almy are true. He is an incredible tough grader and takes off points because he wants to. He says it is to show us how to do better at Uni, but I honestly believe he just wants us to fail. He lacks empathy and believes that a D grade is average. What kind of professor wishes his students to fail? Do not take him.
Do not, I repeat do NOT take this teacher. He is test heavy, lecture videos are hours long, and he told his 9/13 failing students that failing builds character. No sir it does not, you ruin students GPA's by having a test heavy class that almost everyone fails every time. HE DOES NOT CURVE AND IS NOT NICE WITH GRADING, STAY AWAY
Makes you work for your grade. At the same time, If you can make it in his class, you should be fine in any where else. I found the prof to be very knowledgeable and fair.
This is a hard course as it is; Almy doesn't make it any easier. Good luck finishing exams without running out of time, and pay attention to detail on the labs. Considering we're in an online environment, he's not understanding about technological difficulties whatsoever. His final is compiled of everything from the exams though, so study those
The other reviews on this professor are accurate, he makes his CHEM180 course almost impossible for the average person to pass. He is extremely unhelpful & his tests are not similar to anything we take in class. Even if there are no other options, I would not recommend him. He doesnt care about students. 0/10! made my mental health go downhill.
This professor will test you rather than teach you. If you dont care about chemistry you will struggle in this course. Exams are purposely extremely challenging & short of time. Its a bad experience for anyone taking this class for general credits. He prides himself on having hard exams. Pretty cringe.
This is the prof that high school teachers warned you about. His exams are VERY hard if you are an average (good) student. However, if you pass his class that is going to be one of your biggest achievements in life. After him, you will have the confidence to take any prof. of any subject because he already destroyed your enthusiasm to learn.
Videos and inperson lecture is whatever is on the slides already. Practice problems and homework does not help when studying for the exams. Six exams + final; format is the same, but difficulty skyrockets. Grades hard. BEWARE OF SIG FIGS. Study in groups and try not to fall asleep. Good luck!
Getting a B in this class is attainable if you study smart and grind. Getting an A is extremely difficult especially if you are taking other classes and/or you have a job. FOCUS on doing the optional homework and practice exam way before the next exam and master those problems and concepts. He makes you WORK for your grade!
This class requires your efforts and time. There are 6 exams and 1 final exam. Lowest score is dropped. Professor Almy is strict but fair. If you really want to learn chemistry, take him. If you want easy pass, then don't. Do the suggested homework, study session, and practice exam. Bonus: he wears suit and likes anything from Bath and Body Works.
Dr. Almy's class is a challenge. He is present to support your journey. He is accessible outside of class & is very encouraging. Focus: suggested homework, study sessions, practice exams. The more practice the better. Go to tutoring. Tough grader, get ready to work. This class is math, word problems & critical thinking under the guise of chemistry.
Professor Almy provides one of the most challenging courses you may take as an undergraduate student. Understand your weaknesses and focus on them. Do every mandatory and optional assignment. Make sure you allow yourself plenty of time to accommodate this grueling class. Unfortunately, many working students do not pass.
Dr Almy is amazing 6 exams and one final. He does his job perfectly, your job is to do all the required&suggested stuff to get good grades. Not hard to get a B The only thing I didn't like is the final. He was still putting challenging questions that we never had before in the last 3 pages of the 14 page final. You really need to put time for this.
He loves teaching and it shows. He has a lot of passion and really wants his students to succeed. He makes you earn that though, get ready for a lot of homework and challenging exams. The class is incredibly fair, he tells you want you need to know, it's just difficult
Very helpful, extremely recommended.
By far one of the most skilled, dedicated, hard working professors in the GWC chem dept. Come to his class and you will learn alot guaranteed 150%
He is the best chem teacher I have had. I would go to office hours to let him get to know you.
Dr. Almy is definitely a professor I will never forget. He's one of the nicest I have ever had, just beware of his test difficulty because they can be extremely tough. There are 6 exams+ 1 Final. Exams 3 & 5 are the hardest so be prepared for that. However, he is available to help, and you can tell he wants you to succeed
His exam and lab were difficult, he added challenging questions at the end and it never was in the practice exam. I recommend watching YouTube for pre-labs and questions in advance. When you get stuck in lab questions or any lab steps, he barely explains or helps you. It feels awkward to communicate with other classmates as well.
Exams are really hard compared to examples and homework.
It can be frustrating when someone has a lot of positive reviews for something you personally find subpar, like lectures in this case.
tbh, his lecture is fun. he gave lots of examples. First 2 exams are fine. Since the third exams, there are terrible. Ready to learn so hard
Very friendly and great professor, definitely sets you up to succeed in future classes that are difficult. Although he is a harsh grader and you will have a difficult exam every 2/3 weeks as long as you put the time and effort in you will do well. Unlike a lot of professors you can tell he cares and wants his students to do well.
I took the Fall23 class. He is fun, likes to crack a few jokes in lectures, and can explain things well (If you do understand what the content is). He is a really tough grader though, he grades very specific things so be sure you know what you should write and what his criteria are. If you know his rules, you'll be fine.
There should be a better balance between exams and homework. Something feels off, like there's a missing link.
Really hard class, makes you want to die but at least your study habits will improve.
I found the class material to be relatively easy, but the exams were more difficult than necessary.
Awful! Avoid him at all costs. You won't regret following this advice.
I am so frustrated with this chemistry class. The exams are completely unfair. The material covered in lectures and the homework barely match what shows up on the tests, and the questions are way more difficult than anything we've been prepared for. It's like the professor sets us up to fail.
How can anyone taking other classes possibly pass this one? I felt completely unprepared for the exams, even though I did all the freak'n work.
I've never had a class where I put in so much time and got almost nothing in return. My GPA is now ruined. Run away.
Bro. Caution: Enrolling in this class may lead to a high risk of failure. The exams are extremely challenging and the allotted time is often insufficient to complete them-----
I feel like I've wasted an entire semester trying to pass this class. It's just too difficult.
Dr. Almy is the man! Loved taking his class, even though it is tough, he gives you all the tools you need to do well if you decide to put in the effort. He teaches his class with a focus on critical thinking and is a great person. I recommend taking his class if you're the type of person that wants to push yourself to be a great student.
The entire experience has been a nightmare. I will never take another chemistry class at GWC.
I had issues from the start. I disliked his personality. The subject itself wasn't too bad, but the teaching and exams were terrible.
I forgot about this site being out of school for awhile, but wish I would have read this earlier. Great person, neglectful as a professor. Assessed he had it hard through his career and wants to pass it on, but there is a difference between passing on trauma rather than knowledge. Definitely will not take again!
His lectures are terrible. I only learned by doing my own research on the topics
Attendance is 3% of your grade, I'm putting it out there if you like to skip class. Some homework assignments were very difficult for me, but I was able to get it finished with the help of my classmates. Tests are insanely difficult. An hour is not enough time for majority of people taking this class. Stress levels were high and tears were shed.
His lectures were extremely boring, and he was never much help. He always rushed through everything, and his class discussions never aligned with the homework.
Lectures are very long and hard to follow, his exams are about 7 pages long. First two pages were multiple choice and the rest were long word problems, only given an hour to complete. Take another professor if you can, attendance is also mandatory and the homework is long as well.
Be willing to work very hard. Take this class if you want to become a better student and truly learn chemistry, but don't if you want an easy A. Dr. Almy is why I am the motivated student I am today, teaching me the skills I had needed to be successful in pre-med. He cares so deeply about all of his students and is such an amazing human being.
Prof Almy is hilarious and his lectures were entertaining. The homework load isn't heavy but the exams that account for most of your grade are intentionally confusing and difficult. He does provide study guides for all exams (excluding the final). if you have time to dedicate to this class you'll be ok, but I can't say I'd I want to take it again.
Very eccentric character. You'll like him if you have that sort of vibe. Course is very organized but also covers quite a lot of materials. He can be hard to approach sometimes but overall will answer questions alright. Strict grader but he does have pretty reasonable grade policy. As and Bs are possible if you put in some work.
Prof. Almy's classes are ridiculously hard for being community college. His tests make up the vast majority of your grade, and his tests are extremely difficult. Long, linked problems make up most of the exams, and if you make a mistake early on, you'll have trouble with the rest of it and miss a lot of points. Avoid taking his classes if you can!
This class is tough, but the lessons from Professor Almy are invaluable. Engage with the material, use the textbook and Unstuckstudy tools, and you can succeed. Expect long exams, but the skills gained are worth the effort.
This class will be difficult. You have to be prepared for 6 exams (1 lowest dropped), weekly homework online, a final, and lab reports to make up your grade. No quizzes, take opportunities to go to office hours and be ahead for this class. It is recommended that you take easier classes the same semester you take this chemistry class. Nice prof.
Writing this 2 yrs after his CHEM A This is the smartest and most skilled teacher you will ever have. If you hate chemistry but have to take a lot of it for your major, take him. You will learn chemistry better than most and dominate your future classes. He's so good I think about things in the real world with chemistry now.
this class weeds you out and honestly he does not care enough to clarify or explain things more simple! this is the first semester of chemistry you have to take in a community college by the way, he takes pride in our class averages being 50-60% and normalizes that it's the standard. you will have to exert your brain power more in this class... gl
To start, chemistry is just a difficult subject and you need to put in effort to study. Lectures are comprehensive to me personally, but Almy does clarify if you ask him to do so, and he makes them bearable by trying to make it fun. Exams are difficult, but are doable if you reread lecture notes and do practice exams. Take him for 180, trust me.
Prof Almy is one of the best teachers I've ever had, he's kind, caring, and funny. Saying that, He is a tough grader, online homework always due the day of class, 6 exams and a final exam, lab and pre lab quizzes, and lots of studying. This is a tough class, but if I tell you you can't do it and your mindset yeah I can't, don't take this class.
Professor Almy is someone who cares about his students, and REALLY cares about them learning the material. Don't expect to take this class with minimal studying and get away with it. Tough tests and final, he expects you to know and understand the material. That being said, if you put in the effort, you will enjoy this class. 10/10 professor.
Almy is real tough but also very good. He has high demands, but gives you the tools to succeed. His lectures are amazing, and he gives you multiple ways of mastering the material. He is very hard, he grades harshly and had 6 midterms and a final, so you have to hold yourself accountable to stay afloat in the class, but you will learn quite a lot.
Dr Almy is a great instructor. His lectures are clear and concise and his demos are helpful. His exams (70% of the grade) are VERY hard as you only get 1 hour (final is 2). He provides many resources for practice (practice exam) so with enough studying, you'll be fine. You must study hard to do well but it prepares you well for other STEM courses.
He is a horrible professor
Do not take him if you want to get good grade in chemistry
Not worth the hassle. Sure, the lectures are decent, but good luck with the one-hour exams, rushed, unforgiving, and clearly designed to trip you up. Don't expect much support either; you're on your own
If you take this class, prepare to teach yourself and good luck, you'll need it.
Honestly, he couldn't care less about making things clear or breaking concepts down.
Just another suit who couldn't care less whether students succeed.
Lectures were hard to follow, and the professor didn't explain things clearly. Exams were extremely time-pressured and didn't reflect the material covered in class. Grading was harsh, and help was minimal. You'll have to teach yourself most of the course.
Dr Almy is extremely tough. The exams are very hard and cover a lot of material, often with tricky questions. Lectures are fast paced and hard to follow, and he is not very approachable when you need help. There's no flexibility with deadlines, and the class is very stressful. Only take this course if you're already confident in chemistry.
Take chem somewhere else, 4/6 exams had averages below 50% with majority of the class failing, website used for hw is terrible and time consuming and needs to be paid for, lectures are just reading off slides, lab is the only reason 95% of students are somehow hanging on and attendance is only like 3% of grade. Not worth it
The class is hard. Homework is manageable. There are 6 tests total and one cumulative final. The first 2 tests are easy, but the last 4 tests are really hard. He gives out practice tests before the 6 tests and plenty of online resources. This is a class that you actually need to set time aside for and really try to keep up.
His class is tough but he does provide everything you need to study for the exams. His Google Slide is very detailed and easy to follow. He also provides extra practice problems beside online hwk so that you could enhancing your knowledge. Just acknowledge exam 5 is the toughest!
Please!!! Do not take his class! You better find another better professor rather than Almy. All of my dedications and efforts that I put into this class were all worthless. His lectures were heavy and confusing. The exams and final were so difficult that even an actual chemist couldn't understand and didn't know how to answer.
Extremely careless and sarcastic. Doesn't support students and seems more focused on penalizing small mistakes than recognizing effort or accuracy. If you're looking for a fair and encouraging learning environment, avoid this class.
Great guy, but his class was very difficult. Labs are graded harshly. His lecture exams are extremely difficult and lengthy BUTTTT If you get the answer incorrect but the steps correct, he'll only take off 1 point. The only downside is if you get the answer correct, but don't format it the way he taught you, he will take off points.
If all you did was get a good grade on the tests you would get a good grade in the class. That being said, there are 5 tests that are incredibly hard. If you get one part of the question wrong you are done for because the questions are like 20 parts long and that's not exaggerating. Lab was easy but I had a different lab prof.
DO NOT TAKE. AVOID @ ALL COSTS. EXAMS ARE HORRIBLE & HE PUNISHES YOU FOR ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING. SIX EXAMS ALONG W/ ONE CUMULATIVE FINAL. IF ALL YOU DID WAS GET 70+ ON ALL EXAMS, YOU WILL PASS WITH AN A. EXAMS WERE EXTREMELY HARD AND CONSISTED OF MULTIPLEEEE PARTS. DO NOT LET HIS FRIENDLY ATTITUDE DECEIVE YOU AS HE IS STINGY WITH LAB & EXAM POINTS
If Dr Almy is reading this review. Please learn a thing or two from your co-worker Matthew Carlson regarding exam construction and lecturing. Going into this class I was extremely confident that I was going to pass w/ at least a B considering my background in chemistry. All that I sacrificed for your class went in vain and my GPA is now in shambles
If u gotta take this class, I'm here to help. Prof def deserves the 1-2 star reviews. Exams 1&2 = easy (basic chem/math). Exam 3 = hardest (tough chem + switch to quantum). Exam 4 = med (topics connect). Exam 5 = 2nd hardest (gas/heat, lots to write). Exam 6 = 3rd hardest (concept heavy). Do the study guide, opt hw, & practice exam they HELP!!!
DEMANDING. There's only half class time per test; try to do the practice exams at least TWICE before each one. Petty grading: less about effort more about doing it his way. His FRQs are annoying, but if you can make connections based on the KEY lecture concepts and explain them you should be fine. Do the Opt. HW and Study sessions they HELP A LOT!
