One of the best. Such a fun guy, and most interesting. Loved his class. A little hard, but who cares!
Nice guy, talked about some topics that were way above my head. Easy to find if you need help.
A nice guy that does a good job of making class interesting with good topics. A pretty hard grader though!!
real nice man poney tail, hell of a guy, a lil too educated about everything, theres nothing getting by this guy. real cool guy once ya get to know him, but holy ****, lay off the gradeing!
Nice guy, changed some of the class assignments because the class was doing bad. After that, wasn't extremely hard. Some boring and bad movies, but overall wasn't horrible for a night class.
Jim is a great professor and person. He's very personable and genuniely cares about his students. If you are reading this and haven't, pick up his book Monument in a Summer Hat. He's a great poet!
Very tough grader, wants you to improve and is willing to help. Not recommended for anyone who does not have a strong English background!!!
really made me think
Very difficult grader. Good teacher, but not very positive. Will tear your papers apart!
Jim is awesome. He's by far the best professor I've had at this university. He makes you want to be better by pushing you to your limits. JIM RULES.
Are you kidding me buddy? He gives you a study guide before the quizzes(which are every week), but the questions do not help that much. I mean seriously this is film. Guy needs to loosen up a bit, take another gen ed cuz this one aint worth the tim
total rip for a film teacher.....too hard and its bout stuff i dont need to know ever again in my life......kermode's book is dumbest book ever
Seeing that this is a 100 level class i thought I would be doing 100 level amount of work. Instead i have to devote tons of time reading books that have no impact on me what so ever. He has a "quiz" each week. Quiz's are way to hard. DON'T take
Very good prof. Really strict for the class and gave a lot of papers to do. He will tear your papers apart but it will make you a better writer.
Makes you work for your B. Doesn't give A's, but will make you work hard and eventually will help the writing style that your high school teacher screwed up on. Side note - hes funny.
wasnt helpful at all when questions were asked- and was very unclear during class. taught above the level of the students taking the class. dont take this class with him
He is a very interesting man. I didn't like the fact that he would pick out one of the worst papers and make over heads of it and expect the writer to read it aloud while he and the rest of the class critize you.
suposed to be an easy class but it's not at all take a different gen ed for hum. the quizes every will are hard as hell and if you do take this class don't buy the kermode book we never used it!!!
BLAH!
Youd think that 111 would be easy, but dont take it with him. While all my friends are writing papers on "proving an ugly thing to be beautiful" we were comparing the writings of Jesus to the writings of Buddah. Plus he reminds me of Penn, from Penn and Teller--just shorter
Some one commented that he makes you work your butt off for a B and that's the truth. If you have other things you'd rather be doing, don't take this class. But if you honestly want to become a better writter, and are dedicated ot doing so, no matter what the cost, he's your man.
He is a verrrry intelligent man and he's way cool too! He does make you work hard, but it's definately worth it, because you learn so much from it. He's got a rather good sense of humor too!
His grading method: C-average writer, B-good writer, and its not possible to get an A. He does help you become a better writer.
I'll admit this class is alot of work, but A's aren't impossible to get! If you work hard and learn from what you do, you'll do just fine in this class. You have to do a lot of reading and writing..that sucked, but he is a very good teacher. You'll learn a lot from him too. Plus he's nice and funny!
gives out a lot of papers but gives you free points with vocab tests and other little easy quizzes, very reachable B if a good attempt is made. Very good teacher, little odd, but good none the less.
Good guy
Ugh!! I was always known as a great writer my whole life and then I came into this class and he ripped me apart. I think maybe because this class was so boring with the river theme. I hated the books and he just made us write about crap. He was helpful somewhat and wasn't too big of an a**. It's supposed to be an easy gen ed..take a diff. gen. ed
don't listen to all the 111 students. if you're serious about writing, Prof. Armstrong is AWESOME! He knows what he's talking about... so listen to him!!! (freshman- i highly doubt you know better) he offers good advice and is always willing to take the time to talk to you. i DEFINITLY recommend him.
Anyone who thinks they are already great at writing should take a class with this guy. Chances are, you aren't as good as you thought. Yea, he's a tough grader, and he expects a lot, but the information you'll receive is definitely worth the effort.
LOVE HIM!!!
he is a really good teacher he just works you very hard. he has your best interest in mind but writing for him is really really tough, now your MLA!
Good teacher, he works you hard but you learn a lot. I enjoyed the class and the books, not so much the articles. Oh well I learned a lot and he is goofy! He's a good professor.
Good teacher but its almost impossible to get an A for the course. Don't think anyone in the class got over a B.He tends to assign long papers for you to write. Highest grade that I could get on a paper was an A- and that was after I had written 11 pages and he prof read it twice. If you want a good grade without working very hard don't take him.
one of the harder profs I've had as far as papers go, but he grades tough to make you a better writer, does not like to give As on papers, make sure to read before class if you want to do well on quizzes, then they are usually easy enough
Generally a nice man, but he has his own writing style that he seems to push on his students. Not all of us are/were geology majors. We don't always have to include the type of sedimentary rocks of our setting. Over all an ok class, it's just his preconceived notions of what your writing should be get annoying and sometimes result in bad critiques.
i really liked dr armstrong. he is very smart and knowledgable. he expects a lot out of you, but he really cares about you. if you take him, it wont be the easiest class, but it would probably be worth it because he is a great guy
Armstrong will like you and your writing if you write exactly like him. If not, good luck. Nice guy, a bit scatterbrained. Some assignments have no purpose. Knowledgeable in subject...
he'd rather be writing his own poetry than reading yours, and it shows in his teaching. typical nature poet, in love with dirt and rocks, and that good 'ol Mississippi River. if you read his poetry, you'll find he's the typical academic poet who comes up with maybe one good poem every ten years. no one writes good poems in his classes...it hurts
a prime example of "those who can't do, teach." I thought the class would help my poetry writing abilities, but instead it made me start to dread writing a poem. I like Dr. Armstrong, but he's not a good teacher.
he is a very unhappy man; it shows. he does not teach this class; instead, you write bad poems, read them occasionaly, and listen to other students read their bad poems. you learn that poetry can be boring. it is a very easy class, though.
Poetry writing is a fun class in general- writing creatively is your homework along with reading a lot of cool stuff. Of course it's difficult because everyone experiences writer's block, but Dr. Armstrong is always throwing cool suggestions out there for his students. His definitely challenges us, but it makes the class interesting. Recommended!
Professor Armstrong is a bit eccentric, but that's to his advantage because it's rather charming. He is very passionate about reading and writing, offers good advice on improving students' writing, and has published poetry anthologies.
i had him for intro to creative writing and he was super cool and pretty funny.held conferences with you to help you with your writing, which he was helpful with. i really enjoyed this class :)
Dr. Armstrong is a fun professor who creates a relaxed, comfortable, yet active learning environment
Professor Armstrong is a great guy. He really loves what he does and it comes across. He's a tough grader and expects alot from his students but I feel that I learned alot from him. He canbe fun but expects the class to get down to business when it's time. I highly recommend taking his class!
Armstrong is fun, he'll help you improve your poetry and always clarifies things if someone points out that it seems muddy at first. Good class, take it!
AVOID HIM FOR THIS CLASS AT ALL COSTS...he gives a 50 question study guide over an 80 page spread for a 5 question 20 point quiz almost every week. His midterm and papers are crazy hard. His grading is not even fair if you are a little off from what he wants you get NO points. DO NO TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HIM!
I personally enjoyed him as a teacher, just not for this class. He's funny and enjoyable, but this class was not his cup of tea. I recommend to all English majors taking this class as a humanities credit to take a different teacher. Film is just not his thing.
He is very approachable and made English and research fun! He is into enhancing vocabulary skills and etymology. He is extremely patient with a great sense of humor. He takes the time to get to know his students and the class environment is very friendly and welcoming. I highly recommend him!
Professor Armstrong is a great professor. He is funny and always willing to help you out. He gives quizzes mostly every Friday but they aren't hard as long as you read the material. I would recommend him any day. By far my favorite teacher thus far. He is just a great person.
If you're someone who values a letter grade rather than the learning experience, this class is not for you. Having said that, Armstrong is a really great professor. He's funny, passionate, and approachable. He has high expectations but you'll leave knowing you actually learned something. Getting an A is NOT impossible; you will work for it though.
Good. Be sure to read all your material and of course watch the movies. The movies will get very old and stick with it, you may not fully appreciate them until later. His grading can be a little rough sometimes but the more detail you add the better your chances at a good score. OH and they are all short answer/essay format.
Professor Armstrong is a good professor. He is passionate about writing and it helps you begin to understand it more. He does require a large amount of reading for a creative writing course but most of the class period involves workshops or learning about new writing processes. Good professor, hard course.
He is a good professor that yes wants good attendence and is helpful if you don't understand something. The reading load is not bad and you get to expand your vocab with easy quizez that boost your grade : ) The papers are not to bad and if you have questions ask! You do writing workshops that help a lot also and make class go by quickly that day!!
Jim does a great job! His reading and writing load is not hard at all and gives you a good heads up if anything changes. He is a good professor i recommend him hightly if you want to do well and actually learn!
He likes to tear your writing apart. He also never updates grades. Aparently everything that I've learned before is wrong. WAY to complicated grading for a required class.
Dr. Armstrong is the best professor to take if you want to learn a lot and still get a decent grade. He is not an easy grader, if you are looking for an easy A, find a different professor. However, if you put in the effort, meet with him before every paper, and do well on the vocab quizzes: you will get a least a B.
Professor Armstrong is a really great professor. His lectures are very thought-provoking, although his test questions can be pretty vague. We were allowed to use our notes on any test, the midterm, and the final. Make sure to keep up on the reading and notes and you'll do just fine.
Holy balls, this dude is ridiculous, do not take him! If you are off on your answer by just a little you get absolutely no credit, class is boring as hell, half the people have a hard time staying awake in his class.
Great class, Dr. Armstrong does very good job keeping things interesting and moving along.
Great class. Got a ton of writing done. As always Armstrong is great to have as a professor.
He tears your writing apart and you never know what your grade is because it's never updated. WAY to complicated grading for a required class.
Really difficult teacher, Tells you from the get go that he is a tough grader and that the majority of the class will receive a C.
Armstrong is an awesome professor and a really cool guy. Loves the poetry. If you show interest in the subject of the class he will most likely like you.
Armstrong is a great professor. At the beginning of the semester he can seem a little scary and a bit of an ass. But he wants you to do good and understand the content of the course. You have a few papers and he will pull them up on the projector for you to read to the class and get feedback. Put in the effort and show you care and he will help you
Professor Armstrong is great! While he does grade tough, for this course we only had 3 big papers to write, one being the final. He clearly tells you what you need to work on because he has conferences with students after every paper, so if you listen to him your grades will improve! Very understanding and kind!
Some people will hate on him, but he was recommended by my advisor and I really enjoyed class. In terms of his papers, he grades on improvement and does weekly vocab quizzes to pad your grade a little. Great personality, I don't have many complaints with him. Doesn't let class out early much, but he does do it at times when he feels we need a break
Professor Armstrong was great! He's offsetting at first but once you get to know him, he's a really nice guy. If you put in the work he'll take interest in what you have to say. He's really smart and expects a lot. He gets frustrated when students don't show up or do the work, so make sure you do both tho earn a good grade.
Armstrong is such a passionate professor. Knowing the material and studying for the quizzes about the movies helps a lot and makes class discussions a lot more easier. He can tell when students know the material and he really enjoys your participation. Really cool guy outside of class
Professor Armstrong is a really cool guy to talk to and can be very insightful. My writing definitely improved in his class. My only complaint is that he was fairly disorganized and it was oftentimes confusing what was due in class. He's also very slow to get grades back. That being said, he's a really good teacher and knows what he's doing.
only issue is that he can be disorganized and vague on what he wants for certain assignments. Don't doze off in class, ask questions, etc.
I really loved him. He is one of those college professors that makes you think about the world around you. He exposed me to things I have never thought about before and it has changed my minor and my life. He's not for everyone and not everyone in my class liked him but I always looked forward to his class.
Gives you good feedback and is always wanting to help during office hours! Not an easy A but worth it.
I took Professor Armstrong's class Intro to Film (HUM140). The weeks are all set up the same, read the textbook chapter assigned, discuss it Monday and Wednesday, watch a movie Monday nights, discuss the movie and take a movie quiz Wednesday, and then take a chapter test on Fridays. As long as you watch the movie and read to book it's a simple clas
Although he's a smart person, I would not recommend as a teacher. He took points off on my paper for a number of pages I was told was good, as well as saying my sources and citations weren't correct after he had already checked those things and told me they were correct. I'm a straight A student and yet received a C in this one credit course...
Professor Armstrong is an extremely interesting and entertaining man. If you are interested in film, beyond surface level, you will still be challenged but yet absorbed in his material. He's a specific and difficult grader so I would recommend other gen ed courses for those not overly interested in film, but otherwise take him and enjoy the ride!
Professor Armstrong is not always straight with what he wants on each assignment. He is very disorganized and doesn't hand back any assignments promptly. He keeps grades to himself and when you ask what you have he is not straight forward with it. 3 books, 3 big papers (8-10 pages), a few smaller papers (3 pages or so). Weekly vocab quizzes
Hes a unique guy, and is funny he can be a tough grader just ask for help in his office hours, lots of reading and tests on books your read, there is a final research paper he gets his class involved by drawing from cards, he goes over the readings and the reading questions are whats on your tests so its important to read would take him again
James what the heck man
Very confusing and poor at communicating
The entire semester revolved around the book Walden. Never met a man more in love with Thoreau. No big tests but there are lots of reading quizzes that are fully determined on how well you answered his hundreds of questions while reading the book. So if you want to skip reading... good luck in this class. Takes forever to get grades back..
If you don't enjoy having a life, this is the class for you. Otherwise I would recommend dropping this class immediately and switching to literally any other professor available.
I honestly only lasted three weeks in this class before I decided that I'd rather drop it and get a better prof next semester. Armstrong makes you work just to fill the "12 hours" that you're supposed to study per week for a 4 credit class. If you want to have a life/job/time for your other classes, I do not recommend him for anyone.
Professor Armstrong is overall a great person and very interesting, however, he is an extremely tough grader. There are quizzes every week based on the book chapter that are short answer/essay style. Be prepared to read and take notes outside of class. Quizzes, Tests, and two papers are what you are graded on and he is a tough grader. Good Luck
Grades your paper like you are publishing a book. Great person but very tough paper and he assigns a lot of paper.
This guy drives me crazy. He says that you need to develop your own style and voice, but then he sits there and tells you to dissect every piece of your own style out of the essay so it sounds like something he would have written. He asks for details that are irrelevant to the essay and makes it sound like you don't have the credibility you do.
In every english class in Winona everyone had to only do 3 papers the whole semester, but with Armstrong you'll do 7 papers. He treats this intro to college writing and reading class like a 400 level class and expects you to already know how to write like a college student. He is a VERY hard grader. would not recommend taking him
Weekly quizzes that are very advanced for a general education course. If you are just trying to fit a goal, don't take this course. If you are not majoring in Film Studies, take a different course.
Good person bad teacher
