A great teacher that tells a lot of anecdotal stories that relate to the subject. Has a great sense of humor, interacts wonderfully with the class. He has somewhat difficult tests and a group project, but he is one of the top 5 teachers I've ever had. He's actually a cool teacher and you WILL enjoy his class.

Lectures were off topic and often controlled by the students in the class. Participation policy is ridiculus(high school?). The classroom was uncontrolled so he never finished a single chapter of PowerPoint slides. He grades incredibly difficult and does not work to help the students succeed. DO NOT expect to get an 'A'; "I do not give A's". Avoid

Classes were fun and the 2 hours went by fast. Discussions sometimes got off topic but could always tie back to HRM. Professor was avaliable for help if students were willing to seek it out. You have to study for this course but it is well worth it. Definitley recommend taking HRM 381!

Great teacher! Extremely smart! I would take his class again. He's hot too and that made it easier for me to wake up at 7am for class twice a week. He's easily distracted, but it's cool because he's hilarious. TAKE IT!

PROS: Knows his stuff, entertaining professor, great stories, fun guy, gets the class involved, will get to know each student. CONS: Plays obvious favorites, gives bias grades, knows that students like him and is a bit cocky about it. OVERALL: fun classes, you'll learn something!

He is very interesting! Difficult, but worth taking his classes. He loves the subject and has interesting real life stories, which is a unique quality in the world of professors! Definitely recommeded.

This class was my favorite! Avey is the coolest guy and class is always interesting. This class isn't "easy" but you should do well if you study before tests. It wouldn't be a great class, but with Avey as the professor, it is the best! Highly recommended! Lots of opportunity for EC too.

Great class, if you want to learn then this is the class for you. Avey is a cool guy and makes this stuff interesting. Don't join if you aren't willing to work. Overall, would definitely take again. Only does morning classes though which sucks.

Great Teacher!

Avey is a down to earth guy who obviously enjoys what he does. He's young, energetic, and full of knowledge. Definitely adds a little "punch" to the week with between all the other boring Business teachers. Tough class though -- you really need to study and take notes. Hard tests. But lots of EC to make up for it.

He was a fun teacher and really nice. The class was face-paced and a bit confusing sometimes but overall I really liked the class. He definitely cares about how his students do in his class.

An excellent, funny teacher that's interested in your learning. He does not read the book to you in class via Powerpoints. Lecture time is managed very well and worth coming to. Attendance is encouraged and rewarded. Multiple choice tests feel more like best answer (2 might seem right) NOT 3 clearly wrong answers 1 right. I highly recommend him.

Avey rocks, that's all there is to it. If you don't like him it's because you didn't want to work hard and in that case, you should be in college. If you want help, he'll give it to you. He is thrilled to see students buck up and do their best. Read the book and come to class!! Test are multiple choice, but very hard! STUDY, STUDY!

Dr. Avey made this class as interesting as it could be and was extremely helpful. His tests are pretty difficult but if you study hard and read the chapters you should be fine. Dr. Avey brings the energy and enthusiasm every day, sick or well. Always smiling, ready to joke and very personable. He easily relates his material to everyday life. Take advantage of all extra credit, read and reread the articles, study for the tests. Dr. Avey's tests are more serious than you'd expect, but his classes are FRICKIN' SWEET!

His tests are brutal. He would spend hours in class talking about side things that weren't very relevant. His focus is on major corporation's HRM, but how many of us are really going to be working at Microsoft? Things he talked about in class weren't on tests and things on the test weren't talked about. Makes you wonder what's important.

Tests were hard but if you studied & asked questions, you'd learn a lot. Econ majors make class less interesting, but my favorite course & professor. Being easy on the eyes & real-life scenarios in his stories help the information to really sink in. Expect to spend time studying, study groups are almost a must! You make or break your grade.

Good prof. Made the information interesting and applied it to the real world. Need to study a lot and attend all classes to pull a good grade. Tests are VERY hard but after you take the first and know how he tests they seem easier. Would recommend him for an HRM prof.

Dr. Avey is a really hard professor but on the first day of class he will tell you what he expects. I'm an RT major and this has been one of my hardest classes but Avey still made the class fun. I wish that the other professors in my major were as organized as DR. Avey. For this class be prepared to attend class, take notes, and READ THE BOOK.

Avey emphasizes teaching what works in management based on empirical studies while providing a framework to help you fit the methods to your personal strengths. A lot of technical knowledge is required to be learned and attendance is a must. That being said, he still manages to make you want to come to class.

He does a good job at engaging the class, even with the driest of material. Somehow, I wanted to come to class on days that were completely unimportant. His tests are very hard but it makes you learn the material. Overall, I recommend taking his class. He didn't make us buy a textbook either!

Avey made every class fun to be in, regardless of material. Read the book, do HW, and coming to class (tons of extra credit quizzes) are the way to go. Not only is he friendly, he is willing to help you anytime he can! One of the best teachers at CWU period.

James Avey is an awesome professor. That said, his classes are difficult. I have had a couple classes with him and he makes them challenging. My biggest piece of advice is to constantly attend class. If you do, you will likely receive a better grade. He is a great professor who I deeply respect. Take his class if you can!

I can say easily that Avey has been the best instructor I've had at central so far, and I've spent 2 years here. I say this because of his preparation for class, his level of concern for getting the lesson across in a way that everyone could understand, and his skillful use of anecdotes.

Class was very informal and effective. Dr Avey did a great job in covering the material given the short amount of time during the quarter. He was very enthusiastic and showed a great amount of care about if his students were learning and grasping the material.

This has been my favorite class in teh business program. Avey was extremely interesting during lecture he made two hours feel like thirty minutes. There is a lot of reading for the class, but if you keep up on it you will do good in the class. I would recommend this class to anyone in the business program

Dr. Avey is one of the most open and willing-to-help professors I have encountered in college. Taking human resource management online is probably more difficult than taking it on campus, but it wasn't the hardest online course I've taken. Do the homework, study as often as possible. Be prepared for some seemingly random questions on the tests.

My favorite professor ever. The toughest part of the class are the six quizzes, study hard for those. You also need to write a book report, answer all the questions in the (small) textbook, and do the final. One of my favorite classes in college so far.

I absolutely loved Dr. Avey's class. He is my favorite professor by far. His lectures are very interesting and he keeps things fun by telling personal stories. I took it online during summer quarter. -Weekly quizzes (closed book, no notes) -HR Simulation - Online simulation where you act as an HR manager and make choices for hiring, promotions, wages, benefits, etc. (super easy) -No textbook, only online lectures. -Online workbook

MGT 478 (Leadership Capstone) is a group project-based course lead by Dr. Avey. Dr. Avey is very helpful and proactive in helping groups to meet their team goals. He gave excellent feedbacks and ask thoughtful questions for project improvements. I recommend reaching out to Dr. Avey because he wants you to succeed in your professional careers.

Avey is a great Professor. Hes kind, genuine, and very intelligent. Hes the type of person youd like to have all your classes with! Id genuinely recommend taking his class, but only if your willing to put in some effort. One of the best professors yet! I still need to take another HRM course this year and will definitely hold out until he is teaching that course in the summer. Charismatic and knowledgeable, lots of fun. Assignments were simplistic but quizzes were challenging. Study guides given and optional group sessions online helped. HIGHLY RECOMMEDED!!!

I enjoyed this class a lot. I attended all of the optional Zoom meetings to review for exams, which was very helpful. Reading the book and then watching his lectures helped me gain a better understanding. His lectures are straightforward and entertaining, and they help you focus on what is important in the chapter(s): quizzes, Exams, presentation.

James was an amazing professor that was able to balance being a firm teacher while also being a regular person you could reach out to. His class consisted of a quiz every week, and lectures that were both online and in person. He gave a very helpful study guide that had everything you needed to know on it, and answered any questions you had.

This professor is rad. The dude is hilarious and gives great lectures. He made me actually want to go to class and inspired me to minor in HRM.
