Great teacher. Very funny.
Dr. Baker goes more into WHY things happened the way the did instead of just when and where. He's also hilarious. If you're serious about your education and want to get a brand new perspective on things, I highly recommend Dr Baker.
Very mean to our class, blunt and to the point, but funny. Hard quizzes.
WWII is an awesome class. He knows his stuff and is very funny.
One of the most knowledgeable, yet worst teachers I have ever encountered. Seems to be a bit chauvanist and has a chip on his shoulder.
He is the worst teacher I have ever had. He should use more common sense when he talks to his students. He is so rude and should not be allowed to be around people. His manners are horrible and he should retire. He is a jerk!!!
His tests were easy if you go to the test review. Class is boring. Class is fairly easy.
dont take him. he doesnt explain things well and his lectures are horrible.
he was scatterbrianed
He has 3 tests and they are all over notes basically a litttle is covered in book but he tests over his lectures.
awesome loved his class.
Dr. Baker is very knowledgable about the war and shows you the real side of the war. I liked his class a lot. He shows a lot of videos, which I like.
lots of videos, they dont help you on the test, the text book is in novel form which makes it hard to find info. to study......this would be a good class for a history major....anyone elso would struggle
Highly interesting class. Great teacher once you get to know him. Freshmen don't seem to get along with him, but i think that is because they take things way to seriously. If you take any of his classes keep in mind he likes to joke and is a really nice guy.
dont recommend that u take it
His class is very easy; just read the chapters, take notes, study -simple as that. However, he is very mean-spirited and insults students almost daily; he treats students like 5th graders.
Very boring class but not difficult if you do the work. Don't take early in the morning. He tries to make it interesting, but history is just boring. Be sure to laugh at his jokes. Liked him more toward the end of the semester.
DON'T TAKE HIS CLASS! i was told that he was easy and helpful so i took him...wow...NOT A GOOD CHOICE! he is really hard and very unclear. he has quizzes every week over random things and they are really tough!
VERY HARD! He is a grumpy old man, so there is always tension in his class. He gives very few tests but they are all over his lecture notes, you'll get alot of those!
Hated him!!! He is always pissed off and hates everyone. Tests are hard, talks to fast, too hard to take notes. DON'T TAKE HIM!!!
This class it not very difficult if you take notes and you come to class. There are alot of quizzes but they are easy if you just read the assignments. The tests are pretty easy if you just study your notes. His tests are only over the notes, not out of the textbooks. I recommend him!
I WOULD recommend him! He's not sweet or soft-spoken for sure. He just wants you to think! Apparently, some ppl here don't like to think. He gets frusturated when students aren't willing to discuss the topics of the class. No discussion = lecture. Go to class, read text & take notes-you'll be fine. Not a hard prof. Gives extra credit often.
I really enjoyed this class. At first, it is very hard to get to like him. He is very opinionated, but the class was easy. If you show up everyday and take notes then you will do fine. His quizzes and tests are straight from the lecture and reading. It has probably been one of the easiest classes I have taken in college.
IT IS THE MOST BORING CLASS IN THE WORLD! DO NOT TAKE!
This man is amazing... I've never learned more in my life!
His perspective is unlike any other, you will not learn about THE war as much as you learn about war. The final project is very rewarding and his use of videos is very effective.
This class is very enlightening. He had me from the words "Irrational Patriotism." Dr. Baker is a rebel and you'll learn history from a whole new perspective.
Simply put, the most brilliant man ever to teach the subject of histry. People who complain about his class and teaching style do not have a crittaclly think cell in their entire body.
This class is not that hard unless you hate to read and are not good at taking test. The only grades we have are test. Some people dont like sarcasim and mr. baker is very sarcastic sometimes so that too might bother you.
This class is not hard if you show up and take notes..I promise. The only thing I didn't like was that he never helped outside of class. If you have any questions, you better ask them in class. He may be opinionated, but at least his opinions are interesting.
Anyone who thinks Baker is too much to handle is simply not on his level of thinking. As said before, Baker's rebellious approach is interesting and a welcome change to the stereotypical monotonistic approach of most historians. Far from your grade school "America is invincible" teachings, Baker gets an A in my grade book.
Professor Baker is the funniest and most interesting professor ever!! His lectures are never boring, but you better take notes because that is what his tests are based off of!!He also assigns a reading book, Zinn, and Zinn discussion days are my favorite!!!
Okay. Dr. Baker ROCKS! He's such a funny guy, but don't expect him to be overly nice. Be prepared when you go to class. ALWAYS read the material so you'll know the answers and he'll like you! I enjoyed his class! AWESOME! AWESOME!
AMAZING!!!
Dr. Baker is simply the best professor I have ever taken. He changed my life and made me want to become a history professor. I took five courses with him while at UCO and he was brilliant and funny in each and every class.
silver fox is fun, not the best bookeeper.
i loved going to his class everyday! make sure you read the material before class! it will help you a lot! but he is an awesome teacher! i hated history before i took his class

he is rude. dont yaun, sneeze, or cough in his class.
I loved this class! Dr. Baker made the subject extremely interesting. His perspective of the soldier is relevant even today. Go to class, take good notes, and read the material to succeed.
He comes off as a pacifistic cynic of all war. which he is. but he is a very good professor, who is very knowledgeable. he can even tell you a joke. take good notes, and read all assigned material. the quizzes were actually harder than the midterm and final! study and you will do fine. C is a given, B is not hard to get.
This is the worst teacher I have had in college yet. He is rude, mean, and down right unhelpful. He seems like he hates teaching and hates students all together. He is flat out the epitome of those horrible college teachers that you have heard about or seen in movies. Do yourself a favor and stay away from this teacher! made a B, not sure how.
Very interesting class. Knows his stuff. Show up, take good notes. Be sure to know the name of the book and the author for the test.
The worst teacher ever. Made class so boring that over half the class never showed up, not that it mattered because he talked about the same stuff for weeks at a time. Don't take this guy!
If you can take notes in detail and if you can spend much time reading the book, then I insist taking him. Don't expect to get anywhere in the class if you don't read or take notes. He will tell you that the first day. His tests are pretty difficult, but he will answer questions if you have any. Make sure you read before you ask.
yeah he was an ok teacher, not great...but ok. it is obvious to everyone in his classes that he'd rather be golfing than teaching anyone and that can get kinda old. he lacks the effort to really be worth anyone's time but if you need A or B, you can take this guy, not too hard
Great professor. his classes can be difficult if you don't want to do the work, but as long as you come to class take notes and read you will do fine. Many people miss his sense of humor and think he doesn't like his job, but he loves teaching and is nto mean at all. People who think so are usually over sensitive.
Professor Baker is a new deal Roosevelt loving leftist, but once you get past that he's an entertaining guy and gave me a B. A very fair grader. Though a friendly word of advice is, make sure you get any promises he makes in writing.
Dr. Baker is, in my opinion, a very good professor. He lets you know what will be on his tests and goes over the topics extensively. His lectures were easy to understand and interesting.
Dr. Baker actually *does* love teaching. You can tell if you're actually paying attention. He's tough, but you'll learn more about history, and a more *balanced* view than you may expect. He really knows his history and not just what you'll read in texts, but the real deal. Just be prepared to listen, take notes and do a book review or two.
Ok Baker was a good profeesor, but his lectures were sometimes dry and often sermon-like . I had him for WWII and we never mentioned a battle in Europe after 1941!? The class was mostly life as a solider during the war, which was interesting but not what I thought I would get form a WWII History class. His grading seemed fair and he is helpful.
He is nice and interesting, but very into Politics!
I loved the guy! The class isnt bad his quizzes are way easy you get to use notecards!! I would recomend him!!
He is soooo freakin smart and has alot to offer. He liked to ruffle the classes feathers though. I really liked his class. He is hilarious! Take notes and show up, you'll be fine
His class is pretty easy. His quizzes are not hard you get to use a note card. His tests are not bad at all, he goes over the material it's all out of his lectures. I didn't study for the first test and made an A because he repeats the information. His class is solely lecture sometimes they can be kind of dry but most of the time they're funny.
Dr. Baker has an acquired humor and cares about history and the perspective people take on it. His quizzes are easy you can still use your notecard, his tests are pretty easy although you never know what people he chose to put on there. reasonable man, although sometimes comes off as arrogant but is tolerable. take him.
He is a very hard teacher. i asked him a question about what he had just said and replied to look it up. he has a weird sence of humor, but his tests are hard but the quizes are easy. lectures are very boring also. wouldnt recommend this guy.
You need to read the book, take notes during class, and re-write the notes. Very important that you intend class. Otherwise, a nice guy, he has a weird sense of humor, but you get used to it. He allows note cards to be used on quizzes and sometimes on tests.
If you don't like history dont take Dr. Baker. He is very knowledgable in the field of history but has a very blunt personality and werid sense of humor. He will tell you straight up if your notes suck. Make sure you go to class, take good notes and read. Also, give yourself enough time on the book analyses because to me they were hard.
Dr. Baker's class is a lecture and take notes type. If he is gone, he will show a movie and expect you to take notes and know what it is about. Attendance is key for passing. He is very boring, and seems unorganized sometimes. The course isn't hard, just take good notes and you'll do fine. I ended up getting a B.
Dr. Baker will tell you how to pass his class on day one. 1. Come to class 2. Read material before class 3. Take lecture notes 4. re-write notes combining reading and lecture material. He teaches history from both view points. He cares about your grade if you care about your grade. I really enjoyed it, he's funny and class is interesting.
Dr. Baker is great! He really knows his stuff, but you really have to read the text and do the work. It is not an easy class, there is a lot of involvement, but in the end it really stick!! Thanks Dr. Baker!!
Dr. Baker is a great instructor, and you will learn a lot. The class involves a lot of reading but not too much. He is an easy grader on assignments and essays. He is very straight-forward and you know from the beginning what he expects. The class is not easy but is perfectly reasonable. He's a great lecturer. Just don't insult his ego--it's huge.
His lectures are really good-very interesting, you can be lazy and still get a C, tests are easy right from lectures, sometimes he thinks his class is the only important one, amazing guy!
He was kind of dry and mean at sometimes, but the class is so worth taking! Just keep up on the reading turn in your one paper and you should get an A in the class. I loved him and this class but i was also on his good side. Just show effort and you should do fine!
Really enjoyed this professor. Do and turn in all assignments. He can be a little dry but there's some humor in there. He's not great with dates but is never a problem on the tests. He lectures everything you need to know and thinks he can tell when you haven't read the book. Follow his syllabus. That was how i aced his tests. great prof!
If history isn't y our thing, don't take Baker. If intensive note taking isn't your thing, don't take Baker. He's very dry and takes history very seriously. It is a class heavily relient on lectures with the book used as a reference. Not the best professor, but not the worst.
Getting a decent grade in this class is easy if you actaully go to class. Exams are based on lecture material and the book is more reference than anything. He knows his stuff and asks expects you to learn and not just coast through the class. He is not a hot pepper but he asked our class if he had any so I thought I'd help him out.
Excellent Professor, just not for average incoming freshman. He's hilariously dry and wants his students to succeed. If you care and show initiative, he will care too. If you respect him he will respect you. Otherwise he cannot be expected to give you the time of day. Show up, take notes, open your mind. Under the gruffness is a really sweet man.
I love this guy. His lectures are great - he is very interesting and isn't that hard if you study and take good notes. I will take more classes from him if I can!
Class is hard! Funny teacher but you have to take incredible notes to get an A on the exam.. All questions on exams are from lecture notes and you have a quiz every wednsday.. some are easy some are hard!! You have to work at this class but hes a pretty good teacher!
Dr Baker is very dry while lecturing, is not open to debate in class. If you take his class, just keep you head down and take TONS of notes. Read the material assigned, tests come equally from this and lectures. Very annoying occasionally, as he believes [Doctorate syndrome] that what he says is gospel.
Dr. Baker really knows his stuff. Make sure you go to class because every lecture is important. He seems fairly easy. He drops the two lowest quiz grades and has 3 major exams. Make sure you are there on exam day, otherwise you will have to take the test at 7:30 in the morning. He is kind of dry, but he tries hard. Have to give hime credit for that
Dr. Baker has been, by far, the best professor I have had at UCO. Attendance is crucial but not manditory. There is a significant amount of reading. However, he tells you multiple times exactly what will be on the test. I will admit that this class was somewhat difficult, but I received an A because I stuck to his guidelines of success. LOVE him!
Dr. Baker really knows his stuff. Attendance not mandatory but tests come straight from lecture notes. Quizzes come from the chapters in the book though. I attended, took notes, studied the notes for tests, and made a B.
I took his WWII class and it was GREAT! He is a great professor because he challenges what you think you know. He has no problem debating, but keeps his responses short and painfully sharp. He does not prescribe to the romantic view of war and highlights the lunacy of wartime policy making. He holds nothing back! He was a fantastic professor.
I liked the way Dr. Baker taught WWII. He focuses on how ludicrous it was, and how unglamorous it is. Go to class, read the book, and learn the key people (there are A LOT). Dr. Baker is now in retirement, which he seemed to be longing for during the time I was in this class. I think this made him more short tempered than usual. Overall, good prof.
The class had quizzes and tests. The take home quizzes, or Zinn assignments along with the index card allowed for quizzes were all that got me by. The tests weren't necessarily hard, but if you aren't interested in history whatsoever you may find this class to be a bit difficult. Good luck!
There is a good amount of work-quizzes mostly, but he allows you to use notecards and they are not that difficult. There are four major exams which he takes directly from his lecture notes so you do have to show up to classes and take detailed notes. Good professor overall!
He is one of my favorite professors. He is not difficult at all, read your text book show up to class and take notes. The quizzes as long as you read the material are relatively simple. If you have a question and you ask outside of class he is more than willing to help you. Two tests, few quizzes and an interpretive essay that is pretty cool.
I have had Baker numerous times, including Graduate Research classes. Baker is a great teacher, and he does not sugar coat it. He is the best American History Teacher at that school, and its a shame that he retiring..
A lot of reading!!! No sugar coating. Very straight forward teacher and I admire him for that. Don't stress over the paper too much it's not as hard as he makes it sound just follow instructions. Not a super easy course but I'd definitely recommend him.
I personally enjoyed this class. All you have to do is read the chapters, take his Scantron quizzes (which were extremely easy) take notes during class, watch some movies, and show up. It's really simple, I didn't show up half the time and still made a B. Just keep up to date on the chapters and actually read and you can make an easy A.
He only teaches through lectures. If you don't enjoy history and are just taking it for credit I would take it with someone else. He doesn't outline or clearly explain when tests or assignments are due and doesn't cover everything before tests, you have to teach yourself a lot. Also never puts anything online or uses email/D2L.
I wish I could say I liked this class but I really wish I could re-take history with someone else. He did not put anything on D2L or really make any dates clear whatsoever. If you do not go to class you will miss a lot. Lectures were boring and hard to follow and I had NO idea what to study for exams. He's a sweet guy but I would take someone else!
We were supposed to have an online, Monday and Wednesday class. We never got the zoom code and never once met. He rarely replied to emails and he graded assignments late. For our final paper, we were supposed to have a peer review and turn in our rough draft to get feedback. This never happened either, and the paper is 40% of our grade.
