Makes going to discussion worthwhile!
he's the funniest TF I ever had!
Good good TF, funny guy, nice guy, pretty good at facilitating discussion.
You're the man
Definitely try to get him as your TF! He's so cool. Just like Gallagher (the professor for IR292), he knows none of us IR majors are actually interested in the subject, yet makes it relaxing, as entertaining as possible, and the discussions were even insightful most of the time. Great TF. He's just really, really cool.
Too young to be a really good prof, he just got out of BU himself. Wants to be likeable but ends up rambling and taking too many comments from the audience (put your hand down kids!). the best lectures were ones in which he didn't use powerpoint. easy tests.
He's a great professor! He makes the class incredibly interesting. I came in undecided, and now I'm thinking about a geography minor. He's really funny and the discussions are about current events relevant to the class material. You have to read the book, but if you go to class and study, it's not too hard. My favorite class!
I have had so much fun in this class. yes, the textbook reading is a little dense, but the lectures are very interesting< Baldwin is hilarious. very open to help in office hours, makes good suggestions, and does well in relating class subject material to current events. I always walked out of this class smiling!
Great prof! This class is easy as long as you put in the effort for the final project. He offers plenty of help and redos on all labs so it is hard not to get an A. Also lets the class out early/offers free days often.
Overall a good professor, he can learn a thing or two though. Taking notes can be a pain when he starts cycling through the slides at lightening pace. He should put the slides online beforehand so people can print them out and take notes rather than putting them up after we've moved onto another topic. Interesting discussions and very helpful in OH
Interesting, but hard to make notes. Always forget to post powerpoint online which make you crazy. Have to pay attention in class for quiz and exam. Rarely use the book during in class discussion, but questions about the texts will show up in quizzes and exams. Attendence is "mandatory" but he stopped taking that after the first midterm.
I thought I was going to learn a lot of stuff in this class, but honestly, it's all very common sense material. Although JB always complained about the textbook, it actually wasn't that bad. His tests are much trickier than they should be. The group proj. wasn't too difficult. Overall, pretty easy-going class, just like JB.
Though probably easier than chem/bio/physics, GE100 is not as easy as it seems.Don't be fooled! Tests are tricky &this class actually proved to be quite difficult for me. Lectures were also very boring at times. He states that you can get a whole grade higher from your test average if you do allof your hw (painless) and go to discussion. It's true!
The only good thing in this course is that the discussion performance does important on final grade. Lectures are boring. Lecture slides are not that clearly links to textbook.
He's a really nice guy but his teaching can be hard to really benefit from. The class turned out to be much harder than I thought (I've taken 300-level courses easier than this) and the homework often has very little to do with exam material. Discussion section pretty pointless. If you're good at memorizing, I guess it wouldn't be so bad.
J Baldwin is a great professor if you want to learn about: obviously embellished/ untrue stories about his many accomplishments, his Australian surfing buddies, how he was an EMT, how poor he is despite making 50k/yr (which he will mention A LOT). He's a terrible professor if you want to learn about: any of the course material.
Professor b is one of my favorite teachers at BU. Yea, he goes off on tangents sometimes but they're pretty good stories so idc. Homework isn't too much and isn't too little and tests are completely manageable if you go to class and do the readings. He also reminds you that a liberal arts degree isn't lucrative and ppl here need to hear that.
One of the best, if not the best, professors I've ever had at BU. He's really knowledgeable about the topics and he's very personable. He explains the concepts with relatively low bias, but he isn't perfect. I really enjoyed the class though. He's great all around, don't believe the haters.
worst class I've taken at BU. so boring & rushes through the powerpoints. if you ask him to go back & explain he won't. tries to cram way too much info into the class. lecture never matches up with txt book. 1st exam average was so low he had to curve it 13 pts. rude & condescending attitude. talks more about himself than the subject material.
The class sure is challenging. Exams, especially the multiple choice questions, are hard, but the curve is generous. He crams too much information into one lecture, but professor Baldwin is very accessible and helpful outside the classroom if you need help. As long as you do the reading before the lecture and take good note you will be fine.
He was a great professor and even though the exams were kind of hard, it was clear what he wanted you to know and there was a light workload. I don't remember there being much homework at all. You need to show up to lecture though.
Prof. B is a fantastic professor. He is young but surprisingly good at conveying the material. He does talk about himself but I find them to be great examples to relate the material to students. He is really good at sparking the interests of students. His tests are not the easiest, because you HAVE to go to class and take good notes.
Professor Baldwin is a great professor and really knows his stuff! He was always engaging and funny and made you really care about the class. Not too tough in terms of a class but for some people, the material doesn't come as easily as for others. Very approachable guy if need help so go to office hours often for help. Not too much work either.
prof. B simply too good
Great professor, made the lectures entertaining. Definitely go to lectures and discussion, they'll boost your overall grade a lot. Easy to talk to.
Wasn't very interested in international economics but Prof Baldwin makes the lectures as funny as econ lectures can be. really helps the time pass. He's a great lecturer, not a tough grader and wants to make everyone pass. Go to lectures, they're worth listening to!
AWESOME. Econ is not my favorite subject- but he is the best lecturer I've had thus far at BU. His lectures are organized and in conjuncture with the excellent TAs, even difficult topics are easy to understand. Prof Baldwin really believes in the ability of his students to change the world-- take this class to gain understanding of world econ.
The tests were INSANE. He knows this and tries to give you as many points as possible, especially if you go to class. He posts the exam essay questions (20% of each test) a week early, and it's fine to collaborate on it. The point is to make up for hard multiple choice. Gives 40% of total grade almost free if you go to class. Tests are curved a lot
FAVORITE PROFESSOR OF ALL TIME. Lectures are awesome - they follow the textbook but are supplemented by fun facts and relevant stories. Exams were easy, based on the book and covered in lecture. Baldwin clearly cares about teaching w/ quality & tries hard. Discussion sections were engaging. If I could retake this class I totally would!
Baldwin is a great guy and a great lecturer. The tests can be pretty tough, but if you put in the effort it's not very hard to do well. He takes attendance but you won't want to skip class anyway.
He puts some information from his lecture - that are not in lecture slides or materials - in exams, thus attendance is critical. He is very enthusiastic professor who is very humorous. He definitely inspired be. Exam scores were never curved. I wouldn't say its an EASY but FUN.
Prof Baldwin is so enthusiastic, he made econ semi enjoyable! He uses real life examples & talks about current day situations a lot. Tests are fair, TAs give a study guide which is really helpful. Takes attendance, easy HWs that take 5 min to do, overall great class
Amazing professor, really helpful and always available for office hours. May deviate from topic but makes things interesting by connecting everything to lecture. Even uses his own images for presentation. He is very experienced and down to earth. He is very friendly and answers all questions.
Easy class, with very little work in between exams. You only need the textbook because his tests are based off it. Lectures are relaxed and enjoyable given the material. I was in the B range for all the exams, but he curves the class, so I got an A at the end of the semester.
Makes econ easy to understand, and the homework is not too hard - overall an enjoyable class, and his real world examples are really interesting!
Really great lecturer. It is insane how knowledgeable he is. However, his tests are very tough. It is only multiple choice, but... Be prepared for the type of multiple choice where you have to actually know the answer. Essentially, it's pick the most correct answer for every question. You really need to know the nuance to ace the class.
Professor Baldwin is an amazing teacher. He's passionate, hilarious, and keeps his lectures interesting. His tests are hard, but if you study and go to class, you'll be fine. He's empathetic and really wants his students to care and get involved in class and out. He offers extra credit opportunities. Go to TA study sessions, because they help a lot
Baldwin genuinely cares about the well-being of his students. Sustainable Energy was a very interesting topic to learn about, and you can tell that he is passionate about the subject. In order to pass, you can't miss lectures. The tests can be pretty tough, but if you take notes and review the slides, you should be just fine.
Very important to pay attention and take good notes for tests because questions are specific, so skipping lectures is a no. Homework was easy and graded on a pass/fail and there were occasional discussion assignments but overall these aspects were pretty low-key.
Prof B is a great guy, very knowledgeable and passionate. Make sure to take thorough notes and attend all lectures since the exams can be tough and specific. He knows that his exams are difficult so other assignments are easier and he offers extra credit. Homework and discussion section were pretty useless, lecture was great though.
Professor Baldwin is super passionate about the class and I learned a lot from his lectures. The projects are cool too. He posts his powerpoint, so it's easy to study for exams off of lecture material.
Baldwin is a great guy. The material itself is dry, but he taught it in a very engaging way. Lectures are mandatory, but not very useful for the exam. I didn't really pay attention in class and just read the textbook and studied the study guides carefully for the exams. Homework is tedious but takes only 5-10 minutes every week.
Great and engaging lecturer. Originally took the class just to fill a requirement, but it became one of my most interesting classes because of how passionate Baldwin was about the topic. Slightly more work than I was anticipating with the large Sustainability Plan, which is the only downfall of the class. Baldwin is very friendly and funny as well.
He is a really engaging lecturer but I really dislike his form of exams. He has 2 in the semester, everything else are mini quizzes (very do able). The exams are set up to trick you. They are very conspicuous, detailed and if you don't read the text or read over the PPTs 100 times, you won't pass. We are having a curve because of all the fails.
Baldwin is the best professor I've had. He's passionate, an expert in his field, funny, and knows how to break down the densest topic to the least engaged student. He weights according to the average in the class which makes getting an A doable, and has a good amount of discussion work to boost your grade as well. Definitely take this class!!
Baldwin seems to have trouble covering all the material required. I attended every class, but the lectures were not useful in learning or studying. Study guides are more helpful, but are often released very close to test date. Thankfully, grades were helpfully curved. Baldwin himself is genuinely nice and funny. Would take again, but not for econ.
Prof. Baldwin is a good teacher, yet the level of difficulty for a 150 level class does not match up. We had to write a 30 page paper in a group in the span of 3 weeks with 10 pages due each week. I heard this class was a good science credit and not too hard but the difference from this year to last is stark. Don't take it for an easy A.
I really liked Baldwin. Lectures were easy to understand as well as interesting and relevant. He repeats a lot of the same (seemingly unless) info but it's entertaining not annoying. The two exams are kinda tricky but if you go to all the lectures and read the textbook then you should do just fine. He's a nice and approachable prof, always happy
Fun lectures and very interesting topics.
He's great! I highly recommend taking his classes - not just 304. He does a ton so he's not the most available, but I rarely get bored during his lectures, and you can tell he cares about what he's talking about.
Literally the best prof I've ever had, im taking 2 more of his courses next semester
Professor Baldwin gives great lectures, even about sometimes boring topics regarding energy and basic environmental science. Some of the assignments, specifically the sustainability project at the end of the course, can be super confusing but Professor Baldwin is always accessible for help when you need it.
Baldwin is hilarious, he is very into his subject, kept the class entertain with some stories here and there. Midterms can be tricky tho, but as long as you keep up with textbooks readings then you gucci.
Professor Baldwin makes the most boring energy topic somewhat interesting. The exams are difficult, and sometimes he picks the most random things you'd never think are important for questions, but study and you'll generally do well. The group project is luck of the draw, but not too taxing. It's Baldwin's personality that makes the class.
Baldwin is nice enough, but the tests in this class are so unneccesarily hard. He said if you read the textbook and show up you'll do well, but this wasn't the case for me.
Mandatory lectures, weekly homework that requires the reading (along with weekly discussion section assignments), and extremely tricky, unfairly worded exams. All of this is slightly redeemed by his pretty decent, self-deprecating dad-joke humor.
sustainable development. semester project is daunting and requires a lot of work but is also graded unbelievably loosely. just make sure youre writing in full sentences, dont cite basic reference sources for anything but images, and make sure your poitns make at least a little bit of sense. weekly hw a little heavy but doable. cool class all aroun
Baldwin has a clear passion for the subject, but occasionally struggles to make these introductory lectures engaging. He clearly does his best, though, which is nice to see. His grading criteria are clear and overall organization is strong. However, the textbook was genuinely unhelpful to me at times - it was full of typos and dead links.
The class was structured really weird. Lectures are mandatory but the only stuff you'll see on exams is from textbook readings. Homework and discussion assignments were always busy work, however they boost your grade a lot if you get them in on time. He's generous with curves and the class isn't that bad if you put in a few hours every week.
Boring, reads off the slides
unreasonably difficult. makes me strongly dislike economics. Quiz structure does not help me learn! super short time and I can barely read the question since english is my second language, and can't see what I got wrong after the quiz. The prof is too paranoid about people sharing class content.
I wish this class wasnt mandatory for my major. you have to buy a textbook thats more than 70 dollars! during covid times you expect me to use 70 dollars to buy it! its either I buy that textbook or no groceries for two weeks.
I wanted to like him, but James is too paranoid about cheating and attendance. He does not post the weekly quiz answers, so we don't know what we get wrong. He does not save lecture recordings, and he also tests on ambiguous things. He has a good heart, but that doesn't matter when it comes to being a good teacher.
Funny guy with entertaining lectures, but expects a lot from you. Papers take a lot of time to write, but if you actually take the time do them you'll get a good grade. The class can definitely suck the life out of you from time to time.
Dude's okay. Not supper fond of him, but you learn a lot about economics. His explanations for trade theory are not the clearest, but it's easy to figure out on your own. Weekly quizzes I recommend you pay attention to and look over them. He laughs a lot at his own jokes which I think is funny
Quizzes were easy if you took notes and attended lectures, and he was super interesting to listen and talk to. Always willing to help students
A very kind professor. He's genuinely interested in what he's teaching which is very refreshing and necessary. Informative lectures that are sometimes hard to follow along to, but overall a great professor and guy, highly recommend
Really interesting professor. His stories make the class so much more entertaining. The combination of the course topics and his funny stories is just the best. Weekly quiz but they are not hard (multiple choices). Go to his lectures and take notes and you will do absolutely fine.
Professor Baldwin's lectures are engaging, he gets lost in stories about cultures from every region, and even had me feeling genuinely inspired. Work was easy enough, if you read the book for this class, you are golden. Work load was relatively light + doable. Good for hub credits, easy enough if you follow current world events.
Prof Baldwin's lectures are filled with tons of content but he does a good job at explaining things and preparing you to explain topics on your own. He also cares deeply about educating students who will enter the IR/Econ field. The exams are everything in this class. I was not a fan of how much MCQs outweighed short answer in the exam scores.
I have a terrible background in Econ and was dreading taking this class. Without Professor Baldwin's engaging attitude and sincere care he showed toward his students, I would've been in deep sh*t. He wants to see his students succeed and is happy to assist outside class. Grades are curved at end of the semester. Textbook optional.
Excellent professor. I was an IR minor and struggled with the required econ courses until I took his. Attendance was mandatory but his lectures were so entertaining I never wanted to skip them!
He is an extremely interesting lecturer. The quizzes come from the textbook for the most part and the lectures are just so we can learn about current events and important demographics in the region we study. He loves to include personal experiences in his lectures on each region which is super interesting. Overall, the quizzes are very easy.
Really personable professor that makes the content interesting by using personal stories. Exams can be difficult and there is weekly homework along with mandatory attendance, but if you stay up to date with everything the class is not difficult.
Professor Baldwin was very entertaining in class, however a lot of what he talked about in the lectures was not relevant to the quizzes that he gave. There was no midterm or final - instead he had 6 quizzes throughout the year. This made it important to read the textbook unfortunately. Overall though, the class was not bad and not too hard.
This guy is PARANOID. about EVERYTHING. Also does not stimulate much interest. Weekly homework, quizzes, class attendance and participation for a class which literally EVERY ONE takes for hub requirements. No guidance provided for the quiz. No way would I recommend him. Genuinely don't understand how his ratings are so high.
thank you for making HW due and administering a quiz on the same day
long homeworks weekly, as much as any major class despite this not being a major class. for anyone. said in class he will make sure most people get C (but this is a hub class why make it that intense?). instead of making class a good environment he makes it such a chore. hours of hw every week + quizzes, ton of work, and TERRIBLE jokes. seriously.
Professor Baldwin is an amazing professor and I really do not get his bad reviews, he will bring his real-world experience to class to make it more interesting and the quizzes are NOT HARD as long as you show up to class and take some notes you are guaranteed to get a B or above. There will be weekly hw but that takes max 1 hour and is pretty easy.
I am pretty certain he is not that nice that he seems to be or pretends himself to be. Quizzes are taking a large portion of your grade, but it doesn't have any guidelines. They are just randomly selected from a huge textbook you have to buy for this course. Weekly homework is also causing lots of pressure. And his joke is a joke. Never recommended
Don't take his class for hub credits. Professor Balwin likes to string his lectures together with personal stories and examples. He has a roundabout way of explaining them. I took a class that went over similar content and it was MUCH easier to understand. Quizzes are ridiculous, like riddles.
An actual joke of a class. Baldwin cares more about examining whether your signature matches on the attendance sheet every week than actually assigning relevant assignments. Have to do a LONG homework every single week, which doesn't even account for a significant portion of the grade. Quizzes are NOT curved so if you get a 8/10 that's a B-
This man has an incredible ego and is genuinely a very unkind individual. You will leave this class with less happiness and less faith in humanity. It is a stain on BU's IR department--which is usually excellent--that he is our only option for a major required class. He should be removed from teaching this course immediately and teaching generally.
You get the sense that he does not care about his students at all. Worse yet, he genuinely thinks that he is relatable and down to Earth when he is actually just insufferable. Being in his presence multiple times per week is downright cruel and it is too bad there are no other professors offered for this course. Shame on BU honestly
Sitting in lecture rn this guy is so cringe
I took EE150 with Prof Baldwin last semester and as a questrom major, I didn't think this class was super difficult. As long as you show up to lecture, take good notes, and study a little for the exams, you would get at the least a B. He uses his real world experience to make lectures more engaging. This class expects a college level effort.
agree with the other reviews about his huge ego. he is paranoid about having his lectures being recorded even though people might need to take photos of the slides since he goes through them quickly or they might have poor eyesight. not a good teacher at all. makes too many personal anecdotes that his students do not care about lol. avoid his class
I have never seen someone enjoy listening to themselves so much. What makes it worse is everything he says is so cringe it is unbearable. He needs to go away. His ego is so fragile and it is honestly just sad.
Take this class with anyone else. Can't teach and has huge ego....yelled at someone once for taking a pic of the slides because he's so terrified of his lectures "being sold online" and stealing his "intellectual property". Ironic since he stole the slides and homework directly from textbook. Hated going, dreaded weekly.
Not a fan. Tests are way too difficult and full of trick questions and too long. Has a huge ego, somehow manages to talk about himself for every topic. Had a fit when students were sending around a free version of the textbook. Overall not good, take this class with literally anyone else or do the requirement with a different course. Avoid.
Saw a bunch of poor reviews for Baldwin, so wanted to give my two cents since I took 201 a year ago. I looked forward to lectures because he could make the most boring material entertaining. This is the easiest class you can take for a hub credit, so if you're struggling it's probably your own fault tbh.
If you have to take ir292 do not take this professor. Huge ego, annoying, & your grade is mainly made up of 3 exams (last one is cumulative) + homework/participation. I agree w others here; he doesnt care about his students/is traumatized by whoever was selling his lectures online. Participation is mandatory but his slides dont help much for exams
Take with someone else. Only bright spot was my TA. Slides taken word for word from textbook, but you're still expected to do both. As others have said, yelled at a student for taking a picture of a slide when he was going too fast. Thinks he's super cool and relatable, but he's just lackluster.
Lecture quality varied, but overall it was easy to follow even if you get bored. Homework is easy and graded on completion, and short answer questions for tests are given ahead of time. Go to lecture, take notes and read the textbook and you can get an A. He curves the final grade of the course not the individual tests.
Honestly, these reviews are incredibly insensitive. I had no problem with the teaching style. I imagine most people who have written such poor reviews just didn't study the textbook well enough (realistically, you could read the textbook alone and get an A). Good class, actually my favorite this semester.
Super nice professor, with tons of interesting stories to talk about. Class can get repetitive because its similar topics throughout, but it is a straight path to an easy A. He clearly enjoys his lectures, and loves talking about the world. If your discussion TF grades easy, this class is a breeze.
Have taken Professor Baldwin, but never again In class, often would go off on tangents that did not appear on tests at all, and were textbook based. Would be fine if discussion was larger part of grade, but instead discussion were worthless, but attendance was mandatory. Essentially there to rant, while counting on the book to actually teach.
Baldwin is a neo-liberal who will push his politics into the lecture. Exams are multiple choice + short answers (questions given beforehand). Exam contents come out of the textbook, but he focuses on the most detailed points that are not big themes from the content so beware. TAs are helpful outside of class, Psets are completion graded. hate class
Best professor ever. Had him for several classes. I wanted to drop out and this man resurrected my college career and love for learning - never missed a single class again. Bold, fun lectures, clear homework assignments/grading, very encouraging. Test material is all in the slides. I barely took notes and got the best education at BU. GOAT!
I enjoy Professor Baldwin's teaching, he does a very good job at explaining concepts in lecture but keep in mind that for the exams you will need to read the textbook thoroughly as well. He is not a right-wing neoliberal as some of the other reviews say. He is super approachable and honestly is a classic millennial, but that's why I like him.
He is very thoughtful with his lectures and connects them to current events in a respectful and educational manner. Would definitely take his course again.
People are way too hard on Baldwin. He's very kind, dorky, and easy to understand. For an econ course, he really makes the content accessible, at least for me. He's very geography based, so if you like real world examples of econ, he'll be a great prof. I did rly bad in ec101 and 102, but 292 was truly so interesting, especially general knowledge.
If you're an IR major and you're stressed about IR292, don't be. Baldwin's a chill guy and it's very possible to succeed in his class even if you're not an "econ person". His lectures make complicated econ concepts more digestible with real world examples.
Professor Baldwin is very caring and understanding when it comes to helping students and is always accessible outside of the classroom. The tests and quizzes make up majority of the grade, but the quiz questions are given out ahead of time. As long as you pay attention to the lecture and read the textbook, this class shouldn't be too difficult.
Pretty easy to get an A as long as you do all the work. Baldwin is chill
Professor Baldwin is really enthusiastic about geography and he shares lots of stories, which kept me awake during an 8am. Make sure to attend discussions, be regular with lectures and participate in class once in a while, it's an easy A. I didn't do too well in the quizzes but if you're regular with assignments you're good.
I adore Professor Baldwin! He's such a caring professor, he even designed this class so that if you show up and do the bare minimum you cannot fail. unit 1-2 is similar to EC101 & EC102, but unit 3 is very fun since it's all case studies. Also, HE'S NOT A NEO-LIBERAL. Someone said he was in their review and he never forgot. He's very fun and honest
He is a very good professor as he is engaging and receptive to student feedback. The multiple-choice exam is easy if you use the textbook (it's essential for this class—don't rely on ChatGPT to revise, it won't work as you need case specific case studies). Criticisms about his ego or being annoying are unfair and untrue. He is not a neoliberal.
Baldwin can be a polarizing professor, but with the right approach, the class is manageable. Engage with the textbook, attend lectures, and use resources like Unstuckstudy for study prep. The exams test details, so be diligent.
overall, baldwin is a good professor. his lectures are pretty engaging and he can go off into tangents. bi-weekly quizzes are worth 60% of your grade (6 of them) so make sure to go over the questions at the end of the assigned textbook chapters. rest of the grading is based off of discussion assignments and participation which are relatively easy
Such a chill course, even more chill professor. Gives you great hub credits and the grading is super relaxed.
he import on my substitution til i industrialize
My king. He is so caring and genuinely wants you to learn. As long as you actually go to lecture, the class is not too difficult. There are also a lot of things being graded, which makes the exams more low-stakes. I usually hate econ classes but I would take a class with him again.
professor baldwin is good and his lectures are generally interesting. id say the easiest way to get a good grade is to just go to lecture and take notes. the exams cover the lecture, the slides, and the vocab in the textbook. discussion sections are just homework review, and when there's quizzes the content is given out before.
This class was way easier than Macro and Macro from an International Relations understanding standpoint. Professor Baldwin is very efficient in teaching the material and makes it easier to understand the concepts, taking time to address areas of confusion. You should go to class and if you do the exam will be easy peasy. Got 100% on the final.
Great professor who really cares about his students. Definitely a course on the easier side with the only "high stakes" assignment being two in-class quizzes worth 20% of your grade. The rest is graded on completion. Go to class! The way he explains the material is understandable but if you try to learn it only from the slides you'll have trouble.
He is a very good lecturer and makes the classes interesting. That said, the class is structured weirdly with quizzes and tests on the same week, sometimes a month apart, sometimes only a week or two. Also, review for the tests is infuriating as there is no term sheet and the class slides aren't useful without him explaining them.
Very straightforward grading: If you do the homeworks, go to discussions, and try your best to pay attention in lecture, the class is easy.
