Helpful, Nice, Good guy
Mr. Barbee was the type that made class entertaining and the online assignments wasn't bad but once you get to the midterm and final unless you have a great memory expect an average of 70 which drop your grade some but still make it hard to get an A.
Barbee is a great dude, really. Only the final for my class, but the quizzes are almost impossible. Material is not clearly presented--even when going to class. Stopped going to class, and I take the blame for it. If you want a relatively easy class since it is Gen ed, I don't recommend Barbee.
Online quizzes are difficult, lectures are eh, but he is hilarious. He's a sweet guy and I don't think would ever be mean to anyone. We only have one exam, which was the final so that was difficult, however he drops grades. I'm not much of a bio person but it was okay.
This is the second time I took Mr. Barbee and he made a class a little less overwhelming this go round. Online quizzes are still tough and don't always go with the powerpoint so pay attention. 4 writing assignments that are graded pretty fair which will bring your grade up some.
I took Barbee for both of my Biology gen ed classes because he is a super cool and genuine guy. Quizzes can be tough but if you use the powerpoints that he gives you while you take them you'll be fine. The tests are really hard. You're going to have to study to do well but you can still get an A if you bomb one.
This is my second time having Mr. Barbee and he made class a lot less work compared to 1201 but not any easier. The quizzes are online and pretty hard but you have resources to look them up, 4 writing assignments that can really help or hurt your grade, it depends on how good a writer you are, and the final which is hard and confusing.
Dr. Barbee is such a sweet guy and he really tries to keep students interested in the material. He will help you in office hours if you go and is really patients.
This guy is entertaining. Other than that this class sucks. I went to class everyday and took notes yet there were still terms and questions on the quizzes that i had not even heard of. They are extremely difficult for no reason, its gen ed. I dont recommend him at all.
Barbee is a great Biology professor! There are 12 "problems" and each problem you spend about 3-4 class days discussing. You have a quiz at the end of each problem (so 12 total) no midterm and no test until the final exam. The quizzes can be really hard even though they're online and open book/notes! Still study for them!
Nothing too hard.
Very great guy, willing to help. Very clear in what he wants out of you as a student. Very down to Earth and humble, although he is very skilled in what he is talking about. Genuinely cares about the subject and the students. Definitely taking his class again.
Mr. Barbee takes the material for this course, which is not amazingly exciting, and makes it entertaining. He explains everything so well and has a very easygoing ,funny personality which makes the lectures easy to bear through. If you don't go to class, you can certainly pass with the book and the power points, but I would recommend going for an A
Great Professor, his class is not easy, but he actually cares about his students, gives you more than you need to succeed, and is very funny.
Good teacher, clear assignments and information, there to help if you ask. Beware of those online quizzes--they will give you an easy A, but you might not be prepared for the final exam in class, due to easy look-ups during those quizzes!
Barbee's lectures are not bad, they are all power-points but he makes them fun. There is online quizzes after each chapter that can be quite challenging but you can use your notes, only test you have is the final. His class is overall easy, and a great teacher. I would recommend.
This is entry level Biology in a large auditorium - no one really cares about participating in class or showing up. 60% of your grade is online quizzes, one writing assignment, and one final at the end. Barbee and the TA are always there to help you. Do not buy the textbook, even though he advocates the usage of it, it doesn't really help you.
All he cares about is birds. The class is entirely taught by power point and the quizzes don't cover the same material. No one attends and those who do sit in the back and play games on their phones. DOn't bother picking up the textbook either, that wasn't any help.
This is the worst required class I've ever had to take. It's mostly lectures with one written paper. The online quizzes DO NOT corresponded to the lecture. I am a consistent A student and made C's and D's on almost every quiz. After emailing him to ask for help, he said I "need to find resources outside of the classroom the answer the questions."
Do not take his class. His powerpoints and lectures are not like the quizzes. Only 10 quizzes and a final. The final is 'supposed' to be just like the study guide, well it is not. His lectures are boring and if you want a good grade you have to learn the material yourself.
LITERALLY WORST CLASS EVER. NICE GUY, BUT NOT NICE QUIZ AND TEST GIVER
The quizzes have nothing to do with what you learned on the powerpoint. I went to every class and there was still things on the quizzes and final that I have never heard of before. Very hard a tricky but he is a great guy and humorous.
Overall, James Barbee is a terrific character. However, his lectures have nothing to do with the quizzes. The quiz questions are similar to those on his tests. The lectures are quite boring. Throughout the semester you may find yourself slacking and not attending classes. The people who do attend usually sit in the back and play on their laptops.
His lectures are PowerPoint heavy, with a few videos thrown in. There was never a clear line of information to study to prepare for his tests/exams, and oftentimes the tests do not match with his PowerPoint presentations. Overall, he is pleasant and you can schedule time to discuss any problems you may have with the course.
Dr. Barbee's pretty cool, his lectures and material are very straightforward, however class is not mandatory. It does help to try to attend, though, as there are extra bits of information on the topics that aren't mentioned on the powerpoints accessible outside of class. His quizzes and tests are online and he tends to add in extra points.
I spent most classes tallying up the amount of dad jokes he made. It was usually around 7 per class.
I sit here and wonder why I come to class. I should just scroll the powerpoint from home, because he isn't adding anything to them. If it weren't for the dad jokes every three minutes I would be asleep before the class started.
He is a friendly guy but not great at explaining. The stuff he teaches is not like what we learn in class
James is a nice nerdy guy but he will breeze through the material too quickly before you realize you have no idea what he is talking about. He has these pop questionnaires that are his way of randomly checking attendance. If you don't go then you can just read the book and be fine. Lots of online quizzes that aren't too bad. freshman level course
Barbee seems like a great person, but I am not sure that I like him as a professor. However, he is available during hours and will help you out. The material covered in class was rarely ever on the tests and quizzes and he flys through the powerpoints. However he does do pop questionnaires and those contribute to your final grade.
He outlines material well but it is up to the student to learn it!
Barbee is a great teacher. Powerpoint based class, not mandatory. Quizzes online I found a little challenging but manageable. Tests were a lot easier! Very sweet and caring and accessible a lot for office hours. I took notes in the beginning but if you just study the powerpoint you will do great. Sometimes lectures get off topic...
Barbee is a laid back professor with a passion for student success. Although attendance is not necessary for the class, his enthusiasm and teaching style make up for the annoyance of the Gen Ed program (a little). Seriously though he's a guy you'll see on campus or in Central with a smile on his face and a "hello".
Barbee is a pretty nice guy, but I just did not like him as a professor. Flies through powerpoints and you pretty much have to learn material on your own because he gets off topic a lot
Barbee was overall a good professor. If you're struggling on the tests, it's a good idea to go to office hours and see where you're going wrong so you don't make those mistakes again. His grading system is clear and as long as you study you should be able to get an A!
Never went to class and still did great by reading power points and quizlets!!
Jim is quite the goofball. He loves birds and is passionate about student success, he knows we don't really care that much about the material but keeps it interesting. Took his class two semesters in a row so I would recommend, Attendance not mandatory.
Barbee's tests are extremely easy. I barely studied and I got a 90, and a 100 on the first two tests. Show up to his lectures, take notes, and study the material and this class is very easy. He's a great instructor, decent humor, and teaches the material well. Very nice guy!
James Barbee is the best human. He understands that we are non majors and he doesn't take attendance but if you actually show up and listen/take notes/study a little you will do fine. He is everyone's grandpa. Dad jokes 24/7. I love him.
This was a lecture class. We had four quizzes and four tests throughout the class. The lowest grade for each was dropped, meaning if you did well on the first three you technically could skip the final, the fourth test. The tests were easy if you took notes during class. If you don't show up or ever take notes then don't expect a perfect grade.
Barbee is a very nice guy who cares a lot about what he is teaching. Quizzes are online and tests are usually in class. No attendance requirement either since its a lecture class but there are sometimes questionnaires you have to do during class, so if you skip, make sure you still do it. Overall a good class with a good professor!
Barbee is a great guy and does his best to make lectures accessible for all students. You have to go to class to get the material-- his PowerPoints alone do not have all of the information on them.
Honestly take a different professor if you can. The lectures are redundant and considering this is a GenEd class, the quizzes and tests are harder than they need to be. Don't get me wrong though, he's a good guy.
Took Barbee's 1201 and 1202 Biology classes. He's a cool guy who really cares about science and teaching. Not too hard and since its a lecture-style class not many assignments. Take him if you need an easy science Gen Ed course!
I'm neither good nor interested in Biology. However, Barbee is an AMAZING professor who makes the subject bearable. His lectures are very easy to listen too and not get bored. He provides great examples to explain certain concepts which keep you entertained and engaged in lectures. For example, to explain fermentation, he explained how to brew beer
Easy A if you do the assignments! If you have him online, class is not mandatory and the questionnaires/quizzes (no tests) are really easy. No final exam (at least this semester) just a final essay which is easy. I really recommend him. Good guy and made Bio 1201 and 1202 super easy! Took him for both and will take him again if I have the chance!
I really enjoyed this professor, he tried to make everything as interesting as it could be for being online as well as making the course super easy to follow. The only grades were quizzes and a final paper which were easy if you took notes on lecture videos. I would definitely take again!!
I took this class online and he was so easy. Worked at my own pace with work due at the end of each week. He is super knowledgable and a really great professor
I was not looking forward to this class but professor Barbee made it so easy. He gave a few less than 30-minute videos to watch and then a quiz and that was it for the week. Take notes on the videos and you should do just fine. We had a few writing assignments but they were only a few paragraphs. The final was just an opinion piece on the class.
Really nice guy and I enjoyed his lectures. I've always hated bio classes but he did such a good job at explaining concepts. He posts lectures every week and once you finish taking notes on the lectures, you take a quiz based on them. They're super easy and his lectures are fun. It's asynchronous, take the course, you won't regret it.
