Very active in the forums, provided feedback, and reminded us frequently that he was there to help us. (Not just talk, he really did help) He wanted us to learn and understand and he worked toward that end. It was an extremely heavy workload, but I hope to have him again.

Unbelievably helpful. If you have a question he is quick to answer and offer more help. He makes it very clear that he is there for his student and you leave feeling like he really does care. The weekly meetings offer even more insight into the information that you are working on. I believe that he may be the best teacher that I have had at APUS.

Prof. Barney is clearly the best professor at AMUAPUS. He truly cares, has insightful and honest feedback. He is a professor that isn't "absent" from the class. Often and quickly responding to forum posts, grading assignments and emails. He lets you know he there to assist you in anyway possible. His class did have a lot of work but I learned ALOT

Professor James Barney is an excellent teacher at AMU/APUS. He always offered his help to his students, as well as extra credit options. If you ever have an inquiry he is fast to reply. He is very active in the forum portion of the class and will ask you questions. A case brief, midterm, final, and quizzes every week for the required reading.

There are 2 case briefing I had no clue what I was doing and ended up with an 'A'. Ask for help and you will receive. My one complaint is that he marks you down if you don't respond to his follow-up questions however he states that it is not mandatory. Just make sure you post and respond to your peers with @ least 250 words. And you'll get an 'A'.

I will tell you I will definitely take him again for another subject. I am the student who fears failure, and I tell you he places your needs above his. He is constantly asking we you need help, and provides great feedback so you know what you need to work on. He cares for you, and grades quickly. You work hard and you will pass. No short cutting.

Great prof, always willing to help out students and be lenient as long as you're putting forth the effort.

Professor Barney is great. Just completed class with an A+. 6 Weekly posts are a bit long but worth 30% of grade. Midterm and EOC worth 25% each (3 essay question (350 words) on each), pretty easy. then 2 Case Briefs worth 10% each, 2 pages each. Couple hours the night before and you're good. Very interesting class and I definitely learned a lot

6 forum posts, midterm, final, research paper and a Supreme Court case analysis make up the grade. Participate and research and you'll do fine. Make sure to meet minimum word count on forum posts and learn Bluebook citation style.

This professor was a good, dedicated and inspirational teacher. Although a tough grader, he made extra credit available for students that were interested.

This guy is a very difficult grader and has very high standards. If you want an easy A, stay away.

I have had several professors and Professor James Barney is at the top of my excellent list. He cares about his students. He responds to "can you help me" almost immediately. He is caring, and if you really try, you can learn well with his methods of teaching. Yes, there is a lot of reading, but there is in all courses, not just legal courses.

Not your traditional online professor. You can tell that he really takes a personal interest in seeing his students succeed. He is fair, but he doesn't just hand out perfect scores to everyone for merely showing up. He makes you work for it, but in return, it enhances the overall experience. I would highly recommend Mr. Barney as a professor.

Being in an online school sometimes it is easy to not feel connected to professors, but with professor Barney it was different. Completed LSTD209 for my Sports Management degree requirement. Forums were very interesting. Mid Term and Final were open book. I would definilty take this class again considering the other degree requirements.

Learned about the Constitution in these few weeks than in my whole life. As long as you do the work you should get an A. There's no word count requirement in forums. Two page essay at the end of class and 3, 350 word count short answer essay responses for the final. Hes very helpful, and understanding. I would definitely take again.

This was actually for LSTD509 - Tort Law. This is my second class I took with Professor Barney. I love having him as a professor. He has alot of experience and he is a fair grader. He is also very positive and uplifting. My only complaint is that he doesn't teach all of the Master's legal studies classes. I wish I could get more courses with him.

The one thing I was most thankful for was that he truly wants his students to succeed. Highly recommend Professor Barney. He is a fair and reasonable grader, and tells you exactly what you missed/need to focus on to increase your grade. There is a decent amount of writing, but was done in a debate format that allowed to you make and defend arguments which turned out to be quite fun! Would take again without a second thought.

When I first saw the amount of work in the syllabus, I was worried about what seemed to be a heavy workload. However, the course work ended up being on par with my other classes, and I actually enjoyed doing the work. It's the only class where I actually interacted with other students. The debate format was great and I feel like I actually learned.

He had great interaction during the discussion posts; asked good questions that make you think. His feedback on written assignments was detailed and allowed me to learn from my mistakes. He is very responsive to emails. Area for improvement: provide a schedule for Zoom sessions at the beginning of the course, working adults need time to plan.

Online classes tend to be rather lonely and mundane. Prof. Barney lessened that aspect with his incredible involvement. He was available to answer my questions outside of business hours, at night, on the weekend. But he doesn't teach blow-off classes, you'll work for your grade. I've taken 2 of his classes and would absolutely recommend.

Prof Barney was a good teacher in my opinion. Coming from the Sports Management degree path, Sports Law was my first "Law" class even though it was second year class. Prof Barney I think understands your background and potentially where your week points might be and does not let factor into your grade so long as you are giving your best effort.

During our weekly discussions he would always have questions that would, at times, make me second guess my original answer, but that was a a good thing. Professor Barney is an amazing professor. He is a tough grader but he is there if you need him. You need to participate or you won't pass. I recommend taking his classes!

Professor Barney was one of the best teachers I have had throughout all my courses at AMU. I have had multiple classes with him and he has always been very professional, helpful and insightful into the coursework. I highly recommend Prof. Barney to anyone thinking about taking courses about law.

He challenges you in all the right ways and is always available to help out a student. He does require you to do a good bit of reading. His style of teaching promotes you leaving with a sense that you actually know the material. He wants you to use that new found knowledge and use it to analyze things. He is very big on critical thinking.

He gave great feedback and was willing to answer any questions. He pointed me in the right direction when it came to assignments and discussion forums.

Professor Barney is one of the best professors at university and in the law field. He has great feedback and always there to explain things on a clearer light. Understands that we are adults with families and full time jobs as well as crap happens.. He is one of the best.

Professor Barney gives a lot of discussion work weekly; participation matters but if you stay active in the discussions you will do well. His class consisted of discussions, multiple quizzes weekly with one project. He is responsive, caring, drops your lowest grades and gives extra credit to make sure you succeed. I would take any class he teaches.

Professor Barney is easy to reach and seems caring. Your discussion posts will be graded like a paper, and participation matters greatly. Seriously, it's graded like a paper. Some of his weekly work put you in a position where you were on the other side of the argument, but it really opened your eyes to rationalizing a legal argument.

Expect to spend significant time on research and writing—assignments require real effort and attention to detail if you want good grades. Professor Barney is an outstanding instructor, and I highly recommend his class to anyone seriously considering a future in law.

Dr. Professor B gave great feedback and interacted with the students a lot in the discussions. There were quite a few quizzes, but they weren't hard. He's a fair grader and his instructions were clear and easy to follow. I would definitely take again.

Was an honor

Professor Barney turned a "boring" class into something that captured and retained my attention. There is a LOT of reading and writing for this class, but that's to be expected given that we're learning about legal research and writing. I'm excited to take another one of his classes because he offers a wealth of knowledge!

I couldn't just skate this class, I actually learned and had to apply myself. 10/10 recommend! He goes out of his way to provide lectures for an online class that doesn't require them.
