You do have to listen and take notes to make good grades. All of his tests come from your notes. He is a nice man too. He gives very interesting lectures.
I had him for 102-C and 256-B. 102 was much harder than 256. Perhaps it had sometihing to do with the class sizes. Be prepared though, he demands you take a position and get ready to defend it. Sometimes its really fun
He gives interesting lectures, but sometimes, if the topic is not interesting, he is a total pill.
I have taken Mr. Barnidge three times since I started Nicholls in the fall of 98. He is one of the best teachers NSU and the History dept. have to offer. You'll need to study hard, but you can't beat this first-rate teacher.A must have!!!

His class is so interesting that the time flies by. His tests are pretty tough, but possible to make an "A" if you study hard. He goes really fast, but there is never a dull moment in his class. Also, he grades on a really big curve at the en
I had Mr. Barnidge for 102 and really enjoyed the class so I took his 256 class and enjoyed it as well. He talks fast so be ready to write but his lectures are energetic and interesting. He allows tape recorders so I suggest bringing one.
Very easy tests. Interesting and enthusiastic lectures make up for the fast pace of his speech.
He is the smartest teacher at NSU. His lectures are fast but awesome. He just knows everything, and he tells you the cool stuff the book leaves out. Test can be hard if you don't get all the notes down. If you can't write quickly, bring a taperecorder
I always loved American History...until I had Mr. Barnidge for HIST 256. I thought he was extremely boring and hard. I also thought he always thought his opinions were right and everyone else's were wrong.
This man knows History!Go to class every day. Bring a tape recorder. If you're going to school for an education, this is the teacher for you!You will learn History and more importantly learn to think for yourself.
Very knowledgeable about the subject matter gets students to critically think about the decisions and reprecussions as you were in that period of history
He really makes you think history through. He encourages you to back up what you believe.

I loved his class,he is a true teacher.I felt like I was brought back in time.I felt myself clinging to every word waiting for the next word to bring me deeper into the time zone of History. If you really want to learn History, take his class.
very hard tests..was like 75 mult choice questions and an essay..took a million notes..the final's notes took up an entire 1 subject notebook..has a condescending attitude to questions by students, looks at you like you're an idiot if you dont know someth
He is a very hard teacher and his lecture has nothing to do with is exams
He is a great teacher and is one of the smartest people ever. He is very helpful and very interesting. His class is like a story book. He is awesome.
Wow was he BORING! It was a major test just to stay awake. He does know his subject well, and I totally respect that about him, but he needs to slow down some. Some questions on the test come from left field, take notes b/c anything is game.
Had him my first semester. Sorta tough, but take notes. Some of the questions on the test were not discussed. All and all good teacher.
I've never had to take so many notes in any other history class, and I'm in freckin grad school!
A lot of notes, but good teacher.
A professor who loves his job. Once when the electricity went out in the building we still had class by candle light! I kid you not. He's interesting and dedicated to his work. Take this class.
I was taught that if I can't say anything nice, I shouldn't say anything at all. I'll leave it at that.
Very boring class. continuous notetaking thorughout the entire lecture.
Good stories in class which help me learn betyter and make class more tolerable. don't buy book. study for tests well essays given at end are graded ease
All you do everyday is take notes! The test are pretty hard so you have to take good notes and pay attention. At the end of every test he has an essay question. Don't just rely on your notes; read the book also.
This teacher is a butthole! You study really hard for the test and you think you do good on the essay question and you end up failing! His test are very unfair!Oh, get this, just about everyone does bad on the tests and he DOES NOT CARE!!!!!!!!!!
If he's such an AWESOME teacher, how come so many people fail his class? Please take my advice and Don't listen to everyone else.I am a hard working student and I am struggling for a C in this horrible class!! DO NOT take this class!!!
I loved Dr. Barnidge's class. Don't take his class if you are a slacker or if you don't want to learn, because you don't deserve to take up space in his room when someone that wants to learn could be there. If you love or want to love History, take him!
Dr. Barnidge is amazing! I wish all profs had the ability to lecture like he does. I also wish he taught upper level history classes bc I'd take every one of them. His lectures are like the most amazing stories. Take Barnidge!
Barnidge is a very interesting teacher, but his tests are VERY hard.I try very hard in his class and I have only missed one day,i am soo lost it is not funny. His lectures can get very confusing, because he drifts off into a completely different subject.Only take this class if you really love History
Interesting teacher. Does not tolerate slacking or not attending. If u put forth the effort he will bump ur grade up
***OKAY, LISTEN EVERYONE! BARNIDGE IS A VERY EXCELLENT PROFESSOR. YES HE IS HARD, BUT HIS CLASS IS A CHALLENGE. WHY NOT TAKE A CHALLENGE. I MEAN, ALL OF US ARE IN COLLEGE - NOT HIGH SCHOOL ANYMORE!! SO FOR ALL OF YOU THAT SAID NOT TO TAKE MR. BARNDIDGE, GROW UP OR YOU SHOULD NOT BE IN COLLEGE. ^^^ B
His lectures are so interesting. You have to study and go to class. If you study he's not that hard. I made an A. I think he's a wonderful professor.
very hard teacher you study reak hard for the test and still fail if you can help it don't take him for any history class.
I learned a good deal of information from his lectures and he really knew his materials and cared about the student's well-being.
Good teacher for History majors. He's very challenging. For the normal students, I'd recommend taking someone else. His notes are clear but are given in story-like form. It's hard to tell what he'll want on the test, and his questions are sorta tricky. He encourages kids to drop. Sorta intimidating.
Dr. Barnidge is very hard. However he is a great lecturer and I got a great deal out of his class. To do well in the class you have to go, be a good notetaker and study hard. No history class has ever been easy for me, but he truly made it interesting.
Excellent professor. Explains the material in a interesting way. Very precise and accurate in testing purposes
suckssssssssssssssssssss
I had him in fall 99 when classes were still 50 min. The 80 multiple choice and "swooping" essay question about killed me for exams. His class was very entertaining but it shell shocked me into the college experience being my first real class nex

His class is hard but you will learn a lot. If you take really good notes you should do fine.
The test are ridiculosly hard. He is one of the hardest teachers on campus. Don't take him if you don't have to.
Barnidge is awesome at lectures, but his tests are frickin hard! Study really hard and you should do okay...if you aren't ready to do some work---DROP IMMEDIATELY!
This class was pretty good. Mr. Barnidge's lectures are usually fun b/c he gets people talking and he is greatat presenting material. However, his tests are much harder than I expected, but I still made an A so I would say to go to class(duh) and study a couple days before the test and you'll do fine.
I love American History now. I had a great time in his class, and he's a great teacher.
he is a great teacher but very hard. if you can't take good notes you better look like practicing before you get to him, because when he starts talking he doesn't stop
The man is a beast. He knows the material and he teaches very clearly. His tests are no joke if you dont like to study I suggest that you avoid Barnage at all costs!!!
If you can't learn by professors talking the whole hour then don't take this class
Great teacher. Had to drop history the semester before. Very interesting. If he teaches about it, he has been there.
The best teacher i ever had in my life!!! Keep up the good work!!!
He is a great teacher. It's awesome just sitting in his lectures listening to him. He really knows his stuff. He makes history really* interested. He is tough, but if you try hard enough u'll do fine.
I took this class four years ago and i still remember things he taught me. He was tough, but he knew his stuff.
Great history teacher. He knows his stuff and clearly presents it in a interesting way. Lectures are filled with info, and sometimes move pretty quickly, but it's not too much to handle. Tests are a challenge; but the knowledge and experience are worth the extra study time when compared to an 'easy' class.
History is not a good subject for me to start off with. Barnidge basically lectures the entire time, has horribly illegible handwriting, and can't draw. If you are going to take his class, make sure that you get a recording device and keep up with current events. He puts an essay about a current event on every test.
He made history interesting. Great stories. I really enjoyed the class.
Barnidge is the most interesting person on the planet. He REALLY knows his stuff and tells the best stories. Pay attention in his class, he talks somewhat fast. Take notes, if he says something MORE than ONCE, its REALLY important!!
Probably the most interesting teacher on the face of the earth! He really knows his stuff and he makes history relevant to modern day. Definitly need to go to class cause you have to listen to what he says, and those great stories.
Barnidge is a great professor who is very interesting. He knows History to a tee. This class is not hard if u put a little effort into it. This is the first history class I enjoy
Very interesting lectures but is very short with people for no good reason.
History 102 with Barnidge was the best class I've been in while at NSU. I was in the class Fall of '06 and still think about his lectures and how fascinating he is. His tests are not that hard if you read over your notes. I never studied and earned an A in the class. No extra points for attendance or anything like that. He knows his stuff.
He makes history fun!
If you are a history major...this class is a must have. He is an amazing teacher.
His tests are straight from the notes he dictates. His stories from other parts of the world make the learning interesting. The classroom enviroment is good because he teached like he loves his job.(I took him at 7:30 in the morning)

Dr. Barnidge is one of the best professors at Nicholls. I like to think of his class as one big story that your grandfather is telling you. He is very knowledgable and loves his job. For the test, just study the notes and you will get an A.
This course will teach you so much. He expects a lot, but what you can learn from his class is priceless. Not very personable. Don't be late-not even 5min late. Im fairly good in HIST so I thought his tests were easy and I enjoyed this class. If you're not good with History..be prepared to put in a lot of time.you must read the book for the test
He talks really fast and at the end of ever sentance get very quite..his stories are very intereting...i always found myself just listening to the stories and forgeting to take notes...it wouldnt helped anyways....i droped out ..but he does curve always!....never sit in the front row and the isles closest to the wall and the door he always calls th
very interesting but very hard to take notes. you never know what to write down and what not to. everything that he usually says is on the test isnt. his stories are great though
I really like his class it is very interesting, but it is a class that you have to study for, but it isn't too hard b/c the notes he gives are exactly what is on a test, and you can not miss a class or else you fall behind and you are screwed.
GREAT TEACHER, I DIDNT LEARN ANY HISTORY IN HIGH SCHOOL, DEF. LEARNED A LOT IN THIS CLASS. HE IS A VERY GOOD SPEAKER AND STORY TELLER. BE ON TIME AND PREPARE TO WRITE DOWN EVERY WORD HE SAYS TILL THE VERY END, NO GETTING OUT EARLY. I SPENT HOURS STUDYING FOR HIS TESTS. THE TRICK IS TO WRITE DOWN EVERYTHING, IT WILL BE ONE THE TEST AND DONT BOTHER R
he's good- definatley knows his stuff. notes are hard yo get because he talks kinda fast and doesnt repeat himself. it would help to get a tape recorder. tests are 90 m/c and t/f and a 10 point essay that he lets you do at home.
TAKING NOTES IN THIS CLASS IS THE HARDEST PART. i NEVER FELT LIKE I HAD EVERYTHING IMPORTANT THAT HE SAID...A STUDYGUIDE WOULD BE VERY HELPFUL IN THIS CLASS, BUT HE DOESNT GIVE ONE...I RECORDED EVERY LECTURE BUT NOBODY HAS 3 HOURS TO RETAKE NOTES EVERY OTHER DAY.SOMEBODY TOLD ME THAT HE ROUNDS YOUR GRADE UP, BUT HE DOESNT.I HAD A 85 AND I GOT THE B
You will have to study and take good notes as with any other class. I made Bs and Cs on his test, but ended up with an A in the class for attending class. He's hard to understand at times when talks low, but overall a very interesting, helpful professor.
He is a great teacher, the people who hated him were all freshmen. He does ask a lot of questions, which he always did to me, but he did raise my 88 to an A for the class. Notes arent that hard if you are paying attention
Barnidge is an awesome professor, but if you don't like to interact you may not like him. He talks low sometimes and his tests are hard but he is so interesting. I made Bs on his test and ended up with an A because i attended. He doesn't allow any technology so if you don't like to write don't take him.
Talks very fast. Good stories but sometimes irrelevant. Test questions are tricky. He also picks on every student and makes them feel terrible about themselves. No matter what you tell him, you will always be wrong and he will always be right.
Hard class but def great teacher, you will have to study!
I was a freshman coming into this class. I was intimidated by the first test, but after that became comfortable with his style. I wouldn't call it an easy class, but definitely passable. He knows his history well and does a great job applying it to modern politics. And 10 points on every test are for easy outside assignments. I suggest taking it.
He is an awesome teacher! you have to go to class everyday & write down every word he says. everything he says is important! i have to use a tape recorder to listen to his lectures & then i play them back & do my notes to what he says. he asks a lot of questions esp. people in the first row. he is the best history teacher at nicholls! by far!
Dr. Barnidge is a great teacher. He is very knowledgeable . He is however, very tough on his students.
Barnidge is a very challenging teacher. he can play games on tests to confuse you but if u go to every class and write down every word and study in advance and dont cram youll be good. and he loves people who answer questions even when he makes you feel stupid. i had a B and he gave me an A because i sat in the front and participated.
He's the kind of college teacher that everybody warns you about and for someone who taught MY PARENTS, he surpizingly wasn't boring. He only uses the board to draw maps and once you get used to his lecturing style he makes history really come alive. Although his tests are hard, you will LEARN in his class. Reading the book is HIGHLY reconmended.
Mr Barnidge was the greatest teacher I've ever had. He taught my mom and aunt, and they loved him back in the 80s too. He teaches because he wants to, and it shows. He's done this so many times, he can recite every major event in the 20th century from memory. I wish I could take him again just to listen to him because the class was that interesting
Mr Barnidge is not an easy teacher; HOWEVER, he has left me with a vast amount of knowledge! Record his classes and compare notes with classmates, and this class will pay off. The class does take a lot of you though; the result is more than worth it.
Mr. Barnidge is very hard. You HAVE TO GO TO CLASS, if you miss a day you miss ALOT of information! He covers an enormous amount of information in each class. You definitely have to continously look over your notes and pay attention, if history is something you don't care much about this class is definitely not for you.
Did the European trip him several years ago. Total jerk! Loved Europe but not him or the group I went with. He is harsh.
Mr. Barnidge is by far the best professor I have had. He is very informative, and is the most intelligent person I have encountered. He lectured strictly from memory and old newspaper clippings. I loved how he kept an open mind to every situation, and challenged his students to take a personal stand. He should be president, VERY interesting class!
He lectures the whole class, Test are very hard. If you miss one day you miss everything. Don't even think about asking another student for a note he will fuss.
Only 4 tests, each was 90 questions long
Barnidge lectures from the moment he walks in to the very last minute of class. This is not a class you can just skip. He takes attendance every day. I would recommend writing down everything he lectures. My typed notes were about 20-30 pages for each test. All of the test questions come from the notes. I finished with an A in the class.
He's such a cool old guy! He expects his students to have their own opinions on past and current events, and isn't afraid to pick on people. He's also not afraid to be sassy. He's a great choice for hist 256, I learned a lot from him.
dry lecture to much, bounces all over place, just difficult over all
He's an amazing professor. He lectures the entire class, but it's like listening to a story. He does check attendance everyday and you don't want to miss because he covers so much in one class. I recommend taking notes and recording his lectures because that's where all the test questions come from.
Don't be afraid if you don't do well on the tests. if you show up every class and participate in discussion and try on the tests he will help you in the end. he does offer some extra credit and he drops the lowest test grade at the end of the semester. i had a very low D but he bumped me to a C because i tried every chance i could.
Good: James is a nice guy. will drop your lowest test and give you some bonuses. Bad:over 1/2 the class that started dropped it. (fall 2018) DONT miss class!! you cannot study the traditional way, best bet is just read your notes a few times because he tells a story. doesnt use powerpoint. First test had stuff on it we did not cover in class
All over the place in his lectures. Not someone you can easily talk to. Mostly a lot of memorization of Moe's. He's totally uninteresting.
This is the hardest class I have ever taken in my life. There are only 4 tests the entire semester so if you do bad on them you are in trouble. He is nice but the entire class is just memorizing lectures. He drops the lowest grade and does offer extra credit. If you dont like to study do not take this class.
Why did I buy the book? Everything on the test comes from the notes. He sometimes picks on people for no reason in class, but to be a jerk.
Must take notes, does not give homework or packets to study from.
