Well over half of the works read for class were interpreted by him as containing sexual references. Got a low grade on paper because I didn't interpret the poem as being sexual in nature. Very stubborn. Talking to him about assgnmnts/grading is useless.

this class was fun! he loves shakespeare and writing and movies so the class is worth taking. it's a little difficult but if you actually do the readings you can easily get a good grade. he's so helpful and has a real interest in his classes.

Good teacher. He cares about the students and is willing to help. His assignments are not that difficult when compared to other 101 & 102 classes. If you take notes and pay attention you should at least get a B in his class.

He's funny and his essays aren't all that hard. He gives you a while to work on them and gives you two due dates. He also stuck up for me when some teacher yelled at me for a little mistake. So he's cool in my book.

People, Mr Baskin is one of the best JJC has to offer. He brings humor to the classroom which breaks the monotony of college English classes. Looks like Milhouse and knows it, which is hilarious. Really smart guy, cares about students, but is a little obsessed with Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Star Trek, and the Simpsons. Note: He loves Mark Twain

This professor is awesome. His teaching style is very interesting.

Great teacher, good luck on the research paper, most difficult paper of my life, he is the hardest grader, if you are going to take this class take very little credit hours that semester because most of your time is going to be spent on the research paper.

Didn't think I'd like him at first, but he is one of those people that is so nerdy it's endearing and adorable. Tells terrible jokes, but you can't help but laugh. Obviously loves literature, maybe a tough grader on essays but listens to your feedback and makes the quizzes and tests not so difficult.

I absolutely loved him. He helped me to understand things other teachers couldn't. I actually looked forward to writing papers so he could comment on my writing so i could improve more.

I loved this class and his style worked for me.

Great teacher. Always offers help and is extremely clear what he expects of his students.

His class was okay but he talks about Mark Twain all the time so if you don't wanna devote more than a month to the same book don't take this class. He is a knit picker when it comes to grading papers. If you want to have a challange then take this class but if you want an easy A then don't.

Great teacher got a better grade then I expected. He is great about looking over your papers and proof reading before you actually have to turn them in. Take his class.

MADE ENGLISH FUN

He is the sweetest guy ever! He is versy passionate about English and helps his students in whatever way possible. He uses The Simpsons to show example. I love this man! I recommend him to anyone.

I love him as an English teacher. He was extremely helpful and always nice. He made you work for your grade, but still fair. I would take the class again if I could.

Horrible Teacher. Says completely preverted references, that aren't involved with English. Obsession with Mark Twain, and makes Mark Twain boring.

Very humble, nice and tries to be funny. He doesn't do every day journals like other English teachers. His Essays are only 500 words = 2 pages long. He is helpful and very organized.

I absolutely LOVED Baskin. He's a pretty hard grader but what do you expect? It's college, you have to actually WORK for it. He honestly tries to make things interesting and fun, which can be hard when it comes to English. Definitely taking him again.

I would take him again. class is boring, but he tries to make it funny. the only hard part of this class is the research paper, but its going to be hard no matter what teacher you have. You spend a lot of time on mark twain which isn't exciting, but it is not hard. I Recommend him!

Took him last fall term for English 101. Got an A on every essay. I'm taking him again for English 102 this fall. He's incredibly awkward and really dorky, but he was pretty good. He lets you know what he's looking for.

Dr. Baskin is a very good teacher. He doesn't give you something for nothing and challenges you.

Dr. Baskin addresses everything that you need to know for the papers that he expects from you. I recommend him for 101 or 102, but be prepared to work for your grade. If you take the suggestions he gives you for your drafts, you will do well. He is very accommodating and surprises himself when he makes a funny in class! lol Take him!

This professor is quirky, funny. I enjoyed his class everyday. He is extremely helpful, almost to the point of writing your papers for you sometimes. He is highly recommended in my book!!!

Knows his Shakespeare. Classes were intriguing, however tests are a bit abstract, but easy to work with. I felt a bit underprepared for the final, but ended class with a B. Highly recommend for any English course.

Dr. Baskin is the BEST!!! He has a quirky sense of humor that was really fun. Although we did laugh a lot in class, we also stayed on track with the syllabus. This allowed us to be prepared to meet the expectations of each paper. I am looking forward to taking 102 with him.

He has a dorky sense of humor, and I didn't find him too funny, but his class wasn't too bad. It was easy and didn't have too much homework, and he's really nice. He is determined to make you succeed in his class.

He's an amazing teacher. So helpful and clear. You get 2 weeks to talk about the material before you write it. Not hard to get an A at all. He has a nerdy sense of humor but I found him to be very clever. You have to take Baskin for at least one class.

He really is a nice guy... but as a grader he is impossible. I followed his guidelines word for word on a paper and still got a low grade on it. He tries to make jokes, but really isn't funny.... but at least he tries :) I just think he's an unfair grader is all.

I took Dr. Baskin for 101 AND 102. He lets you know what is expected and gives you the guidelines for what you need. Take notes and attend class and you WILL get an "A!" He is a tough grader, but you have to follow his guide and your own GOOD notes and you will do great!

I think Dr.Baskin is a very nice person. Though, everyday his class was extremely boring. I really don't feel I got anyhing out of the class.I felt like he was a pretty tough grader most of the time. If you work hard in the class you can probably get a good grade.

Dr.Baskin is truly the best English teacher I've ever had! He may be a tough grader, but as long as you come to class consistently you will do just fine. I was worried because I have terrible anxiety about writing but it is very much possible to do well in his class. He is VERY helpful and smart, but you have to ASK for help and DO THE WORK!

Like everyone else said, his grading is hard. Because he was so busy, he suggested that our class go to the writing center to get help on the research paper. I went to the writing center like he suggested and had not one, but two of those Eng. professors say that my paper was great. Even after all that help I received a B- on the paper! :(

Dr. Baskin is a very bright man. You can tell he really know his stuff. He is a hard grader. However, he will look at your paper before the due date and make corrections before you officially turn it in. I honestly really didn't learn anything in class. The class itself is really boring. Professor Baskin is a nerd in the best way possible. He is truly invested in his students and teaching, and I would talk to him a great deal out of class. He is a fair grader, despite that his tests can be alittle vague. Overall one of my favorite teachers thus far.

Dr. Baskin is an awesome teacher. VERY EASY. I think I got a 99%. If you are a decent writer, you'll pass with flying colors. If you're not very good at writing, he will go easy on you. Took him for English 101 and 102 and cake walked through them with A's.

He's a nice guy. Knows what he's talking about and it's clear that he is really passionate about what he does. Yes, he talks a lot so be prepared to be in class the whole hour. He wants to make sure you're getting your money's worth. However, he's the toughest grader I've come across. Good luck getting an A on your essay.

If you're not a strong writer do not take him. He's very passionate about what he teaches. Overall not a bad class to take over the summer.

Dr Baskin is a very understanding teacher. Very lenient and will always help you to the best he can. Gives a lot of reading assignments and like 5 essays to write. He grades them hard with good feedback and will proof read your essays. You can almost always expect a quiz after every reading assignment but only 4 questions long. He loves batman too!

Dr. Baskin is a nice teacher and is very good at helping you understand an introduction to literature. Although he makes too many silly references, he's still not a bad teacher and grades decently. Takes a while to return work but otherwise you get graded how well you understood the material. I would recommend him.

He claims to be a tough grader but is very easy going and a kind, understanding man. I absolutely loved his class he is funny and it is just a great class to take. You talk about music, pop culture, and drugs. I recommend this class to anyone. Also, he does not mind tardiness or turning things in the next day. He is a great teacher.

He's a really great teacher. The papers he gives are self-explanatory, and he'll help you 100% if you have any question. Definitely write a rough draft and turn it in, he gives really great feedback. There is a lot of reading that goes into the class, but it's an English class. He's funny & keeps it real. He says that a thousand times.

Dr. Baskin is very passionate about English and The Beatles, which made this class interesting. Very thorough in explaining assignment expectations and how he grades them (great feedback). He's pretty funny and his discussions/ lectures are interesting. Strict deadlines, but very helpful. Final is a paper you write in class.

Clear guidelines on what he expects in each paper, goes over everything in class and posts plenty of extra resources to help with the papers. He's also extremely friendly and willing to help. He really loves his job. He's a slow grader though but gives a lot of feedback. I personally loved him and his class but some may not like his style as much.

Baskin is a really great guy and cares about your grade. He loves The Beatles, and Mark Twain. The majority of the semester revolves around The Beatles which is odd at first, but you'll get used to it. He will not hesitate to help you and always is open for questions. he responds to emails in a timely manner. One of the best professors Iv'e had.

If you read the required readings, (which is not that much to begin with), you will pass. The tests are multiple choice with some short answer and occasionally a long answer response. But, compared to other English tests i have taken with other professors, theyre very easy! Lectures are boring, but he means well. Clear expectations for papers too.

It'll be hard to find a more caring professor at JJC. It is up to you to succeed, he does all he can on his part. He posts detailed instructions, sample papers, sources, needed information, and is always available for help. Quite a bit of reading involved but it's an English class. Beatles research paper can be intimidating, so stick with timeline.

Super fun dude and had interesting things to say. Beware, all the papers were based on the Beatles, which is not a bad thing but if you can't stand the Beatles it may be a problem. do your work and ask for help and you will get an A

If you read all the assigned readings and study the questions you'll get a good grade. The class is not hard. For essays he'll read a rough draft and give feedback to make it better. He's kind of a geeky type of funny. Overall Dr. Baskin is a great professor.

I'm glad I took his class even though he is the toughest essay grader I've had. I learned a lot and improved with my writing skills. If you take your time and put effort into the essays you'll do just fine. He gives plenty of feedback on how to improve and gives out papers that list exactly what he expects from your paper.

I would highly recommend Professor Baskin. He's a very caring guy who absolutely loves The Beatles. There are 4 papers plus the final, do exactly whats on the rubric and you will get an A. He will revise your papers and offers all the help he can. There are a few 5 question quizzes there very easy. 10/10 I would take his class again!

If you need to learn how to write better essays, he is the teacher to take. He really gives great feedback to improve your writing skills. Very fair grader, and everything is based off of the Beatles. If you have a chance to take him do so, you won't regret it.

By far one of the strictest grader I have ever seen when it comes to papers. I was a person who would always get A's on papers until I got him and started to receive C's on my papers. The whole class revolves around the Beatles, I know it sounds boring at first, but they really are a very interesting and complex band to study and I am now a fan too

Dr Baskin helped me become a better writer! He is very organize and he teaches step by step to how to write a good paper. Listen to class and apply ALL his lectures to your paper. Tough grader but it will improve your writing. If you have any questions he will take time to explain it clearly to you. He gives feedback to help you improve

He's just a cool, caring guy who cares about his job. He grades clear and is understanding when it comes towork and etc. Both in 101 and 102 he was the same person, he did a great job teaching and giving feedback from papers or just questions about the lesson or assignment. Would take him again. Just cant stress how great of a guy he is.

James Baskin is a very talented and caring professor. He actually cares about his students and their well-being in and out of class. Hes kind of a night owl, it seems, so if you need to reach him at, say, 1:30am, theres a good chance hell reply to your email. Super cool, witty, and appreciates wit and humor. I PROMISE you that hes a godsend.

Took his online Intro to Lit class. Clearly listed out everything we were doing in class and made an effort so the lectures weren't dull to read. My only complaint for his specific online format was you had to turn in assignments by emailing them to him, but it wasn't too bad. Also a pretty lenient grader, allowed room for lots of little mistakes.

Prof. Baskin is great! He does have a lot of assignments and readings, but he is always careful to explain everything to the best of his abilities. ENG 101 has 5 papers, but you can reach out to him and even have him proofread it and make suggestions before you turn it in. ENG 102 has 4 papers (including research paper) but again, he gives feedback

Wonderful professor! He respond to emails quickly, you can always send him your papers to proof read, and is very detailed on assignments. He really helps you understand the material and provides you examples to help. 10/10 recommend him

Prof Baskin was really great. He literally tells you exactly what he expects in every paper. So as long as you can take notes and keep your ideas organized you'll get a good grade. He responds very quickly too. Also, do not wait until the last minute to start typing, because your grade is mainly based off of five papers.

Amazing professor. Attendance is not mandatory to an extent. After five absences he will drop you. Takes a while to return papers, but it is full with a lot of feedback. Professor Baskin is a good professor but his lectures are very boring to sit through. He gives amazing feedback on papers and tries to help out as much as he can. Although at times, this course can have a lot of work and seemed rushed towards the end of the semester .

I loved this professor! He does talk a lot and gets easily distracted. The end of the semester is hard because he doesn't plan things out but it's manageable. He gives tough feedback on essays but he doesn't mean it to be harsh. If I had to take English 102 I would take this professor again.

would definitely recommend dr. baskin. he tends to go off topic in his lectures, but they're still informative. he gives AMAZING feedback on essays and quizzes. he's respectful and funny and you can tell he wants his students to succeed in his class, which isn't difficult to do considering he streamlines everything as much as possible.

Very nice professor and wants you to do your best on his essays. He is not a light grader but will give you more than enough resources and examples in each essay. Dr. Baskin has a great personality, and it makes the class fun to be in.

Dr. Baskin is a great professor. The class grade consisted of 10 short quizzes and five essays. He gave out clear instructions for every essay and handed out a vague outline on how each essay should be structured. He is a very fair grader and gives back feedback on each paper. Awesome teacher! He gives you everything you need to know for the papers you need to write. Very obsessed with the Beatles and all of his English 102 class is about the Beatles. Don't have to know anything about the Beatles to do good in the class. Very friendly teacher who wants you to succeed and very clearly puts a lot of work into his job.

Dr. Baskin is awesome. The class is 5 papers and 10 quizzes. One of the papers is a final exam. Overall, Dr. Baskin is really helpful and nice. He will help you with whatever you need on your papers, just ask.

Professor Baskin was the best professor! His class was all about the Beatles which honestly made it easier and more enjoyable in my opinion. He was easy to reach outside of class. His feedback on the essays were always in detail and extremely helpful. If you have a question, do not be afraid to ask him in class. I could not recommend him more!

Professor Baskin's ENG101 class is well-structured, with clear guidelines on essays and quizzes. While his lectures can be off-topic at times, the feedback on assignments is incredibly helpful. Using Unstuck study alongside the textbook helped me stay on track and prepare effectively.

Professor Baskin is a really good professor. He replies to emails extremely fast. I emailed him at 1:30 am one time and he replied within 5 minutes. He really cares about his students and gives great feedback on papers. (If you like The Beatles definitely take this professor for english 102)

Dr. Baskin is truly a gem. His 102 class is unique in that the papers are all about The Beatles except for Othello at the end. 3500 word research essay is a department requirement for 102, but writing that paper about The Beatles was much more engaging than it could have ever been otherwise. If you are a purposeful writer, you'll do quite well

Had him for English 102, focuses the entire class on The Beatles. The class was enjoyable and low stress, but we still learned plenty. Dr. Baskin is a great person, very understanding, intelligent, and real. He grades essays very thoroughly so you know exactly what to work on.

He is super nice, he grades well and is very good about giving feedback. His lectures themselves were on point and he makes a point to try to pop some jokes.

Be prepared that English 102 revolves around the Beatles, but it's honestly much better than reading a random boring book. Assignments are easy, he gives clear feedback. He's a very nice and kind man that will respond to emails quickly and will help you. If I was able to, I'd take him for something else. Definitely would take this class.

honestly a great professor, im taking him again next semester. he's very accessible, he's very flexible when it comes to turning things in late, always tries to make sure everyone is caught up. can talk about himself alot sometimes and makes cheesy dad jokes. really great guy though

He was very understanding and patient and gives really good feedback with your work. In addition he is very good with making the class accessible especially if you have a disability, in my case a learning disability. He went out of his way to make accommodations happen.

His English 190 class is awesome. Its a super long class but all we do is watch and talk about movies

He thoroughly critiques drafts before they are due. The first 2 essays are straightforward. You are given some Beatles songs and the articles to use. You must use descriptive language to show, not tell, with clear logic if you want your analysis to work. Weird topics, but much more fun than writing about something like the economy or gun control.
