Took during summer. Tough!. Take someone else.

Do not take! Very, very difficult class.
Very fair and willing to help

Easy class.
If you are willing to follow him during the class, then this class is for you. He has prescribed his own text book for the class which is great. You can also put all t he formulas in the calculator. He is not flexible yet very helpful follow the rules.
Good class. Be ready for a challenge, but he provides help and structure.
The textbook is very helpful. Take the quizzes at the end of chapters. They are similar to his exam questions. He responds to e-mail questions quickly, and does his best to explain concepts. Know the calculator, it is your friend!
Beatty is very fair. If you hate stats, he is your only chance to pass, because the others are worse. Beatty is a great instructor, and is fair on test day. Study and you will do fine.
Perfect instructor. He knows what he's talking about. Be aware of the timing for the second midterm and the final exam.
MISERABLE!
He makes this as clear as humanly possible compared to the other instructors like **** Shaul. Don't read the book, just use equations
Statistics... He uses his own book, which is fine once he explains it. Get a supplemental book to explain things. Buy the calculator, use the calculator, love the calculator.
Not very thorough in class explanantions
Professor Beatty is very caring and willing to help. Try not to get confused by the book, just write the steps to the practice problems in your notes for test day and you will do fine on the tests. Practice the problems, practice the calculator.
If you go to his study sessions before each test he will tell you exactly what you need to know. You get to program your calculator with all the formulas that you will need. Group project sucks!

In order to pass this course you have to complete HW assigmnets to understand the concepts. Very time consuming and instructor is very wordy.
Solid prof. It's hard material, but he's the best guy to take. He knows his stuff, go to his review session and do the examples and hw problems he covers to study! A+ is silly for this class, he tells you what to expect. Get a good group for case study!
cool guy. Go to his review sessions, he explains everything you need to know in those 2 hour reviews. Allows 2 pages of cheat sheets and the book(on the last 2 exams). From my experience, I would say take him!!!
Very smart, but gives too much info sometimes. The case study sucks ass, but the tests are very straightforward. BUT, You need to go to his optional review before the test! If you do, he will tell you what you need to know
The class is sort of boring, and he takes random roll. He seems like a very nice professor. If you go to all reviews, the tests are fairly easy. The material is a little confusing at times.
His first test is easy however the second two are rather difficult. He doesn't explain the case study at all.
super nice guy, BUT super wordy (my downfall..that and the calculator). the case study is hard and he's crazy to include it in a 6week summer session EVEN if he takes out 1 stage.
very boring class. Lectures and calc. are very confusing
Beatty cares a lot about teaching and his students. He can be extremely wordy, but it's offset by his helpfullness to students. Honestly, you get what you put into this course. Make sure you show a decent effort on the case study. Go to his reviews because it will all make sense!
This class is very tough and Beatty makes it alot harder. If he can only lecture like he does during his review sessions, this class will be much easier to understand. As a statistician, he is excellent.
Beatty is a very responsible professor. The course is quite tough, but if you study as he will tell you what to study, you will be fine. Go to review setion befor the exam. It helps a lot. I think he is a pretty good professor in SDSU.
Attendance is a must(grade will suffer), Case study impossible(not worth much), tests are extremely difficult, if you are not good at stats take someone else because it will make it that much harder for you. Take someone else if possible, if not may god have mercy on you.
Beatty is an excellent teacher who actually has real world business consulting expeerience in the field of statistics. He cares about his students, answers questions carefully and gives detailed lectures. The class is not easy, but he does a great job teaching it and A plus review helps a ton. I would take Beatty again if i had the chance
Nice guy, knows his stuff and grades fairly. It's tough but if you try hard and just study you will be set.
PP lectures were easy to follow and stragithforward. No HW, no quizes. 4 pg cheat sheet required!!!(you can put everything on 4 pg) sample tests uploaded in BB. If you don't miss the class, you get better B+ I think. Highly recommend this professor's class.
Prof Beatty is a good professor. He takes a genuine interest in his student's success. So if you have problems with the class, talk to him. His book is really hard to understand, but the lectures are clear. He walks you through everything, step by step. Tests are just like the homework. So if you understand the homework, you've got the test.
Beatty is a balanced blend of what a good professor is all about. He cares about what he teaches and that YOU the student understand it. He is not easy - but will make every attempt as an educator to educate successfully!
This guy is nuts. he wrote his own two volume book and they are TERRIBLE. He loves the subject and is very helpful and into the class. Grades fairly. You ahve to study for this class or your in trouble. his calculator system really sucks, you'll spend 8 hours minimum just programing it. lots of time for this class, but not bad
Nice guy but didnt learn nada in class. Take someone else if you can
Super excited & informed about subject. Willing to help & a good teacher for most. However I found him extremely long winded- 15 page syllabus. He wrote the two books you need, it's like 1000 pages worth of crap that could be condensed to around 50. Aviod this teacher if possible. Don't buy volume 1 only volume 2, & yes you need the calculator
good professor, responsive. I got an A this semester, and make me want to take the advanced stat on spring semester which he offer.
Two giant voluminous textbooks (his own), and an endless array of powerpoint slides were a complete overload. His focus on programming a calculator with formulas only added to the confusion. Had a decent grading curve, but didnt get much from this class.
Instructor is very helpful and knows his stuff. If you want to learn statistics, take it from this guy. PP presentations are very helpful. Book is wordy but provides backup for better understanding PP.
Very good teacher, helpful, easy to follow, exams just from his slides and the preparation paper that he gives before exam. No way you can fail this class! Also, very good curve! There is a lot to study and practice but interesting stuff. Calculator will do a lot for you. One of the best teachers in SDSU! Shaul should take notes from this prof.!
This was a great class. I really learned more about statistics and how to use it in the "real world". Prof. Beatty is a great professor. He is really helpful. He even would answer emails on the weekends! He told that class that he wouldn't give anyone in the class lower than a B. I worked hard and got an A-.
He's the best Prof I have ever met. He made this class so interesting and helpful. Study the slides, if you can't totally understand the slides, read the textbook, it helps a lot. I hope to take more his classes.
First class I ever failed. I spent more time entering formulas into the calculator than learning statistics. I would recommend this professor to graduate students who have already established a strong base in statistics. He has a lot to offer as far as practical knowledge and uses interesting examples. Class was boring. I took it in the summer. Don
Great PowerPoints, fair tests, lots of work, etc. First time I have really understood statistics.
Professor Beatty is the most helpful professor I have ever had. He sends helpful emails, and answers all of your questions. He really cares about students.
Professor Beatty is one of the greatest teachers I've ever had. His lectures are clear and organized and he has put a lot of thought into his personalized grading system. In fact, he has put a lot of thought and effort into everything because he's so damn good at what he does. Keys to success: study slides, ask tons of questions, attend class.
Prof. Beatty is the best stats. prof. I have every had. He is kind and very intelligent. He made me like statistics for the first time! Follow closely to his PowerPoints and go to class. The book is not really necessary if you do the first two steps. His tests are fair and he is the real deal. Too bad there aren't more professors at SDSU like him.
Prof. Beatty cares about students more than any other prof. I’ve had. However, it is a boring class. Study, study, study and don’t bother too much with the text book. He is very helpful during office hours if you don’t understand something. I wish he would make things more practical, rather than test you on going through the motions.
Professor cares about his students doing well. His lectures can be long, and give too much info, but if you print out the power point slides and study those, you will do well. Homework is a good prep for the tests- if you can do the homework, there will be no suprises on exam day. I am horrible at stats and got a solid A with minimal effort.
The calculator seemed to be a c**** at first, but once all the equations were in, this made the course and the applications much clearer. The flowcharts were also intimidating at first but were very useful in the long run. All in all, it was a very good course---fair and informative.
professor beatty is probably one of the most clear, helpful professors out there! he's really knowledgeable about what he teaches and is able to make you understand what you're learning. tests are difficult, you can use notes and use pretty much every minute you get on a test. if you can get him as a professor, i highly recommend him, he's great!
You will die if you dont get the calculator. It's WORTH IT. you dont memorize equations, just put them in. Everyone in class was taking this their 2nd or 3rd time. Glad to say I took it once and passed with Beatty! Book is a lot of help - powerpoints are concise too! A+ didn't help me crap! I did better with the book/ppoints
He is the best professor at S.D.S.U. There could have not been a better teacher & person then this man. I highly reccommend this man if you have problems with Statistics. I can't say enough good things about this person. Come to class, print out his slides, ask questions, & you should do ok in this class. Go to his study sessions when offered.
He is really nice and helpful. Do his homework and study the slides, then you should do fine on the test. 3 exams and one self project.
very helpful
Dr. Beatty is excellent. He makes what could have been a horribly boring class interesting and useful. It's very time consuming and there is a ton of homework, but it's necessary to understand the concepts. Beatty is always willing and available to answer questions and help in whatever way he can. I wouldn't take this class from anyone else.
He will teach you everything you need to know. Read the book. Study the power point slides. Plan on studying 4-8 hours per chapter. Get the calculator and program it completely, asap, from Black Board, not the book. It will take about 5-10 hours. Test all of the equations.
Beatty is THE best teacher for his subjects at SDSU. To pass; You must buy the calculator, enter the equations, buy the book for the tables, but don't read it, just follow his power points step by step. I am rubbish at anything math related, and he actually got me to understand stats. He is a friendly, awesome guy. I enjoyed his class. Thanks Prof
Powerpoint slides and homework ARE KEY to being successful. Definitely program the calculator. He made a painful subject painless. If you study his notes, create the mandatory cheat sheets, do the homework, it'll be easy. He even showed up to the post-finals happy hour.
This course was more on how to program and use a calculator than anything else. I learned almost nothing except how to use my calculator. If you can get the appendix with all the charts from the back of volume two you don't need to buy the books at all. You can do everything off his slides.
This class is very overwhelming the first few weeks. The two manuals, which he wrote himself, are more comprehensive than most of my grad school texts. If you do what he says, although very time consuming and annoying, and go to EVERY class, you will get an A.
He is by far the best professor I have come across in SDSU. The course is overwhelming but it eases out as time passes. His power points and assignments are the keys to a good grade. Overall a great professor and an even better person.
He is the Best Teacher and assure you that you will learn.
Great professor. Makes it interesting. Explains very well, but sometimes he runs out of time and will go too quickly at the end of class through the last few slides. Other than that, lots of practice on the calculator and his practice problems and you should get an A.
He is the best teacher I've known. Very clear and detailed; if there is something that you don't understand you can email him and he will explain everything to you. He is very very helpful and honestly someone you can look up to. He knows his subject well, you can be assured of a good class.
PLEASE PAY CLOSE ATTENTION: This class is absolute useless, the professor makes u buy a $110 calculator to plug in 100 and plus formulas in it. Then he spends most of the lectures time talking about how hard our lives would be without it. I?m still taking this non-sense useless class.I am almost done and I haven?t learned a thing in this class.
How this professor has received such a high score astounds me. Beatty is a really nice guy to talk to, his notes are overwhelmingly detailed. The problem is this class is terribly confusing. There are literally over 100 equations that you put into a calculator (which you must buy the $90 bookstore one). I would recommend that you AVOID at all costs
Mr. Beatty is extremely difficult and confusing. This is by far the worst and most complicated class that I ever taken. Although this gentleman has written his own books and has been teaching at SDSU for 20 years he clearly lacks effective teaching skills. His lectures are extremely confusing. I am not joking, avoid this guy by all mean!!!!!
The worst ever!!!!!
Very poor teaching methods. The amount of material covered is unrealistic. The point of him being there is to teach US, the students, WE are the point and he fails at his job. Let me just say that my girlfriend graduated from Yale and even SHE was outraged at how audacious this guy is. Save your time & money, avoid this prof.
Poor class structure, obsessive compulsive, atrocious teaching skills, unrealistic amount of material covered in class. There is nothing wrong about Stats but this guy really knows how to take all the fun away of this subject. Enough said, avoid at all cost this nonsense!
IDS 301 is a challenging course and the professor makes you work hard. However, for the first time you will actually learn something about statistics and its applications. Most students I talked to found this a very positive experience.
Took over summer (bad idea). Prof seems like a chill guy, but the class is WAY TOO HARD. He admitted he's giving us graduate level material, but uh, I'm paying for an undergrad in business NOT stats! (why do we need 2 stats classes anyway?) This class does not return on the financial and time investment it requires. I can't help but feel ripped off
I have to dissagree with the previous comments. Yes, his class is difficult, but he makes every effort to help you understand the material. He deligently answers email and is a fair and extremely knowledgable UNIVERSITY professor. I recommend Professor Beatty, and if you scroll through his history you'll find he is highly respected and rated.
Prof.Beatty & his class are grossly misunderstood. True it seems a little overwhelming during the Summer, but so is every other Stats class! Prof. Beatty did say it was graduate level stuff; I don't see how grad stuff is different. Stats is stats-you have to learn it sometime. Kudos to Prof.B & the book. Even tho I got a C, dont regret it one bit!
Awesome teacher! My word-he is so articulate and such a good person to get along with. Stats wasn't easy for me, but I enjoyed it even then. If you're thinking of taking someone else, mind you, you won't have experienced a better, more committed teacher than him. He makes it worth it.
I have to disagree with the last 3 comments. This class wasn?t fun at all. It?s not that the material is hard but he makes it extremely complicated so as the two gigantic books written by him. Overall this is a horrible class from the beginning to the end. By all means don?t take this class!!!!!
Best professor i have ever had at state. very helpful and patient. uses the books for the tables. but if you go to class and study his power points it is a very easy class. he will also help students. very intelligent man but very approachable.
Great Professor! Allows you to bring extra notes into the exam, program formulas into your calculator, and bring your book. A really sweet professor who will help you if you don't understand the material.
Fun Class. Lenghts of student presentations kept the schedule tight, but learned a lot. Highly recommended prof.
Great Professor! There is work in this class, but it really helps prepare for exams. He is a fantastic professor, other professors can learn from his teaching style.
This man is super helpful and very passionate in helping his students succeed. The course is tough but he is very good about breaking the material down into simple steps. Tests are very straightforward and you know exactly what to expect! I highly recommend this teacher! He was willing to help in any situation!!
He is a good professor, its a somewhat hard subject but his book and powerpoints are extremely helpful. He lets you bring a lot of notes into the Exam. and the homework prepare you perfectly for the test.
Most dedicated professor I've ever had; he is very methodical and has a natural teaching ability; he knows your questions before you ask and answers them at the perfect time; he has taken 95% of the mystery out of statistics for me - it's not a dirty word anymore!! very nurturing w/students and loves his job after years and years of instructing
Jim is great. He breaks everything down for you and even walks you through how to use the calculator. Two books for the class. Pay attention in class and you won't need the books except for Volume 2 to reference on the final. He allows you tons (3 pages front and back)of notes on tests. If your notes are good you'll do fine on the test.
He's the best teacher i've had in a long time. He makes the material very clear & easy to understand. Most teachers get off topic or talk in circles, but he KNOWS what he's talking about. He's easy to pay attention to and allows cheat sheets for the test. I went to class nearly everyday & paid attention, so i didnt need to study much and got an A.
He's a great professor! Very patient and cares about his students. He's great at explaining the subject in a way that is easy to understand. Powerpoints and study guides are extremely helpful. Cheat sheets are allowed on exams. Summer session--> only 3 exams and no quizzes or homework
Quite possibly the most helpful teacher I ever had. He'll answer any question and relates the information to real business examples. The only way this class is difficult is if you don't go to class. He reviews plenty and going to class helps you understand the formulas. He allows for cheat sheets, calculators (with formulas programmed) on the tests
Dr. Beatty is a very nice man, but unfortunately he isn't an effective instructor. He has a very strong case of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and his lectures are very boring. Since he is elderly, he speaks just above a whisper and is rather monotone. I'd say if you like Math a lot, he is a fine choice of instructor. If not try to pick someone else
Dr. Beatty is a very effective teacher. He is passionate about the subject he teaches and he definitely knows what he's talking about. The class is tough, but gives you all the material you need to do well on the exams. Plenty of practice is given to do well on the test. Don't miss class or you will get behind quick. Great class. Loved it!!
Great class that gives you working knowledge of Lean/Six Sigma application. You do several iterations of case studies and they are useful and interesting. If you want to learn about quality management through SPC this is the class for you. Do all the required work and you will get an excellent grade. I recommend this class.
This is a great class that exposes you to the world of behavioral measurements and how to develop & score them using statistics/math. As will all of Dr. Beatty's classes adequate assistance is always available to do well in the class. He is very knowledgable in this area and the class was fun, interesting and I learned a lot. Another great class
Took this class for summer; do not recommend for those who are lazy. Beatty is extremely helpful and friendly. There is a lot of material and it can be difficult, but he is very clear on what will be on exams. Also, his curve and weighting system is very generous.
He is the sweetest guy in the world, but the class is so boring. He just reads the slides...and we aren't given any homework, so most people don't do anything until it's time to study for the test and are overloaded!! You can get through it, but it's not the best.
He's very nice, but BORING and maybe obsessive compulsive. Teaches from his own text which is, no joke, two volumes. His syllabus is over 20 pages long and power points for each chapter are over 200 slides. Takes the loooooong way of teaching something that could be much more simplified. This class is pretty ridiculous.
Good guy. Lots of experience. Good guest speakers...but extremely disorganized! The syllabus was almost totally ignored. My guess is that he just does too much. However, because of his background he is a great source of information for anyone interest in SCM. Also, do all of the work and you should have no problem getting at least a B
Syllabus was never followed. Read directly off powerpoints each class. Powerpoints are close to 100 slides with too much info on each one. Gives very detailed study guides for tests. 3 cheat sheets allowed. Class was pointless to go to. A few small easy assignments, most we never turned in. Very easy, but boring. Never opened book once. DONT BUY!
First off you only need Vol II of the book for the exams. He's very OCD with his materials, TONS of lecture slides, can be overwhelming at first but you'll realize what you need for the exam (and you get 3 cheat sheets front/back). Can be boring at times but he'll take the time to explain something you don't understand.
HARD CLASS _ but BEST option for Stats!!!! GO to A+ review - you will get an A. easy as that. Did not go for 1st exam, got a D (after curve was a C+), went for the final - ended up with a B+ in the class. You do the math. GLAD I took BEATTY.
Not an easy class. You def need to do your own studying, but he gives you more than enough materials to help w studying.. too much to read tho! He can get tricky with the ways he asks questions on exams so its best to really pay attention to what he points out in class. practice exams are super helpful for studying. office hours are helpful too!
I am grateful to have take Dr. Beatty this past semester. I believe he emphasized core concepts in way that allowed me to see the bigger picture! I didn't use the calculator he asked us to buy because I am very proficient with my TI-83! Printing out the slides before class and following along with the lecture should keep you engaged!!
Best class ever. Stat used to be my most boring class and hated. He turned it downside up. Very organized and systematic. Practical and useful.
Professor Beatty is clearly passionate about the work that he does and is willing to put in the time and effort to ensure students understand the material. The class was no walk in the park, but you will learn a lot and receive useful Excel tools and other software to assist with analysis. It helps to be computer savvy.
As a lecturer he is awful. Each class you go through at least 150 power point slides which are full of text. The content is given at a reasonable/slow pace which makes it easy B. Homework helps you to prep for the exams, which are not curved. You are forced to use a financial calculator which no one uses in the real world but costs 100 !!!
I don't understand how anyone could give Professor Beatty a low rating. His powerpoints may be long, but the material is applicable to real-world problems and this goes to show the amount of time, energy, and effort that Professor Beatty put in to help his students learn. Despite all his achievements in Statistics, he is humble and willing to help.
Professor Beatty is great. I had some stats background before the class, but he was able to make everything clearer. Most people had a deeper appreciation of statistics after passing his course. Use the study guides and you'll do fine on the tests.
