Prof Blackmon rocks! I happen to love Logic, so I totally appreciate the joy he takes in teaching it. He is truely excited by the material, as am I. I would take anything else he teaches!
I went into this class thinking I would like the material. He didn't write much on the board and didn't really emphasize which points were important and which weren't. The quizzes suck because they're always pop quizzes and he expects you to remember some obscure facts from lecture.
I was indifferent towards his teaching method. He gave pop quizzes every now and then which were easy if you attend class regularly.
Blackmon was rad. he was super helpful. the material was almost all new to me, but if you show up to class, he explains everything that he wants you to absorb for the exams and quizzes. office hours are helpful. over all, good class.
This class was easy, only a few tests, the midterm and final were short quizzes. Blackmon is enthusiastic and nice. He holds a lot of open discussions, and very little hw. He is a great professor!
Great teacher. Took Logic from him. He readily answers questions and is open to discussion. His test are super tricky though! He's really specific on his definitions so be ready! Overall if you do the hw and keep up with the work you'll do alright. Fall behind..and well it's pretty much over...
he's a good professor, he improvises lots of his lectures and goes on tangents... other than that, he's very elaborative and very, very good looking
Do not take this guy's class! He does not give any type of a schedule and makes it hard for people to pass. He gives no update on how you are doing in the class and has no structure to his lectures-I learned nothing! He gives little homework though and is good looking! His tests are extremely hard and tricky.
Blackmon is great in Phil of Science, also awesome in Intro to Logic. His coverage of induction is worth taking phil of science by itself. he uses multiple aproaches to the material, chrono, topic, etc. Both primary texts and exegesis, very thorough, take him.
there is no schedule provided and rarely gives feedback that is even remotely useful. Knowing what your grade is or where you stand in the class will be a constant mystery so don't even bother asking because he will never give you a straight forward answer. He is slow to respond to e-mails, unorganized, and very unclear. This class is a joke.
Blackmon likes his job. I noticed a lot of the students found it boring and confusing, but if you're interested in what he's talking about it really can be a cool class. He's a good professor, just try to pay attention.
this teacher makes logic harder than it needs to be. in class he always forgets what he is talking about and/or gives the wrong answer. he is very unclear on the subject of philosophy
This is suppose to be a class for like 1st year students... However I am not I was a 3rd year student and Blackmon made this class waaaaaay harder than it had to be... this could've have been a good course but NO he messed it up
I actually found Blackmon's class to be extremely interesting! He was overall a nice, friendly professor. Didn't seem to be very helpful outside of class, but would answer anything during. Lectures were interesting and exams were easy as long as you'd been to class. I'd definitely recommend him!
This guy is HOT! Not only will you be daydreaming about him in class but he is actually funny! He get embarrassed but I found it super cute. He is a good professor, he gives you a different outlook on the world, take his class, he's easy and is you read the book and attend the class at least sometimes you are in good shape.
This class was way too confusing for me. I didn't feel like we went over the things that he put on the tests.
i have no interest in taking a philosophy class again because of this. it was so confusing! i went to class everyday and still didn't get a lot of it. you like rhetoric and stuff like that i guess this would be for you, but it wasn't it for me
This professor is really nice and cool. He will answer any question you have in class and approaches each student's answer as if it should be seriously looked at. He is really excited about the subject which is a definite plus and the way he presents the material is interesting and most of the time really fun. He's not bad on the eyes either ;)
This class was really confusing, yet interesting. He is SO cute that it makes it easy to pay attention and he will answer any question you have. He is also really passionate about this subject and you can tell that it is important to him that you understand it. Overall, I really learned a lot and will miss him : (
Lots of mixed reviews on this guy which I totally understand. I'm a phil. major, i love this stuff, but phil. of science was not interesting at all. He didn't really make it seem that way either. couldn't bring myself to go to class everyday... lots of talk about logic and critical thinking type philosophy. don't recommend it. Good-looking, though
This class is so boring that most people end up skipping even though he gives pop quizes. He didn't return our papers, so that made it hard to know how I was doing towards the end of the semester. Seeing feedback is the best way to know if I'm really getting the material. Guess I could've gone to office hours. Lost interest by the end of the semest
Professor gives 6 tests. He drops the lowest test out of the 6. If you actually get good enough score, you can skip the last test(final). All his tests are out of 20. There are always extra credit on his test. For me, I received an A easily without taking the final. My tests scores are 14.5, 17.5, 16, 21, 19. With participation as extra credit, A!
Mr. Blackmon is a really nice guy, however he has NO CLUE how to teach. He confuses himself even. I don't even bother listening to him anymore, and he takes his sweet time getting tests back to us. I would HIGHLY recommend aiming for a different professor, someone who can teach, not just "talk"
In the beginning I had a hard time gasping the subject and I was a little worried about the idea of only tests and no homework. But he wants to help you succeed if you struggle. If you actually attend his class and take notes you shouldn't have any trouble getting a good grade. He's a great teacher.
This class is sooooooo boring. There are five test plus the final but you dont have to show up for the final if you are comfortable with your grade.
Dr. Blackmon is a very smart guy. when he teaches he tends to pause and gets confused sometimes. other than that he teaches clearly, giving papers, going over all the material many times, shows youtube vids and movies sometimes. rarely assigns hw. 5 tests, last one optional if you've done good. highly recommend this class for new students
He's a very smart teacher. Although lectures can seem confusing at first, the book really clears it up for you. He gives simple pop quizzes every now and then, but not so bad. He reviews previous lectures every class, so not missing much. 1 mid, 1 final and 1 paper is most of your grade. Not a bad teacher at all! I recommend him!
He has intellectually engaging conversations and his lectures made it hard to forget the info for the tests. His personal stories are really funny. I actually looked forward to his class. and he's also extremely polite and well mannered.
30% midterm test, 30% essay, 30% final, 10% participation. He doesn't make things difficult. Tested mostly on the in class notes you take. In class quizes just count towards participation grade. As long as you like philosophy it's not hard to get the grade you want.
He's a great teacher. He is always open and willing to help if you show the need to and he gives great, interesting lectures. He has an amazing ability to make everything clear, no matter how complicated it may seem at first. Also, he's SO cute. <3
I got a B- in the class because I couldn't care less about studying for exams. Class was boring, I skipped a few times. Made up my answers by sounding philosophical and I got decent grades on exams. A good guy, maybe not the most interesting professor. Quizzes, final, homework but doesn't check it.
Very nice and makes things easy to understand. Also, very handsome.
You can tell that he enjoys what he teaches, even though the subject is pretty boring. He only gives 4 or 5 quizzes and 1 final. If you do extremely well on the quizzes and receive an A before the final, he will notify you that you don't have to take the final! So I'd recommend that you work hard on all of the quizzes and it'll pay of in the end.
This class was the last of my worries. I skipped class, barely studied and still passed with an A. Gives handouts and goes over them, not really hw. reading is fairly simple. Couple journals,i think 3 exams and an optional final. takes random attendance for points.
The teacher is enthusiastic. He's funny, but sometimes I found class boring. READ THE BOOK AND HIGHLIGHT KEY POINTS! Makes quizzes way easier! He also looks pretty handsome. He is slow on returning quizzes though. I hardly took notes and did bad on the quizzes. Hardly read the book and I still passed. Take the class, read the book= get an easy A.
Going to class will guarantee you a passing grade. He's interesting and easy to follow. And yeah he's easy on the eyes too.
The class is very interesting, but don't take it as an 8am class...it is really hard to focus on all the terms that early in the morning. But Blackmon is a good teacher. He is also really cute! One thing that got on my nerves was he never really makes eye contact with the class. He is always looking at the ceiling or the floor
Good teacher. Can be pretty boring.Never makes eye contact with class, always faces board or the ground. He's cute, looks alot like Greg Kinnear and has a nice ass. I did not pay attention at all semester and passed with a B so if you pay attention it could be an easy A. Does surprise attendance but he usually has a pattern so pay attention to that
He is very clear and concise with what he discusses in philosophy of science. If he is uncertain about something, then he will admit it. Incredibly knowledgeable about the material. I highly recommend him.
He is so boring. I honestly disliked his class. Do not take it with him. Seriously, to me he did not know what he was talking about, and his tests, not including the journal you have to do, are completely hard. So many theories & he did not explain them clearly. A group of us will have study sessions & teach ourselves. Not a good teacher/explainer
Wonderful professor, can be boring at times but as long as you focus and take notes, study for the test you will do great. Visiting office hours can be helpful also, i gave his office hour a visit before one of my exams because i was clueless and i got a 19/20 n the exam after the visit. Super helpful, great professor. 3 Exams, drops lowest grade
Honestly, he articulates philosophy very clearly, especially something as vast and complex as the mind. The class only consists of 2 papers and 2 exams. Overall,I would probably take him again and would recommend his teaching style
His class was fun but dry. His tone of voice makes the class dry. Attendance not mandatory but better if you go so you'll get better grades on quizzes. Not really any notes. Some group work. A lot of talking teacher/students class participation not really required but recommended. Easy class!!
Very clear and concise, and entertains a good amount of student response.
He was very good at explaining the topics of discussion and answering questions. His lecture style is writing on the board and explaining as he is writing. He does not hand out or post study guides, and never passed out a post-midterm reading list. I suggest going to class and taking detailed notes. Tests are from book and lecture. 2 tests/2 papers
Do not take it with him if you are an English learner (International student or English as second language) because you will find his class difficult. He does explain things well but if you have a hard time understanding English, don't take it with him; he sucks at giving better definition and or clarifying.
The class tends to get very boring. Half the student usually pass out on their desks while he lectures. He seems very dedicated, but the stuff he teaches is very boring and confusing, so missing class wouldn't be a good idea. Not alot of homework, mainly reading. Take good notes, if you're confused (99% chance that might happen), ask questions!
Not organized!
He is a very good teacher. You can get a high score from him, if you study hard and don't skip his class. Even though I am a international student, I got a good grade in his class.
Show up to class! He does check attendance. The class tends to get very boring sometimes, but he's a good teacher. Try to take diligent notes during lectures, as some things tend to get confusing. And try to do the assigned readings, as he does apply them to him lecture the day they're due. Put some effort in the class, he'll notice it.
I had a wonderful experience with Dr. Blackmon. I found him to be interesting, helpful, and very knowledgeable. I would definitely recommend him to anyone.
Would have given him a 5 on easiness had he not been so attractive that paying attention during lectures became difficult.
Absolutely adore him! Very clear and steady-paced lectures; provides plenty of notes, diagrams, course tips, and review. Pretty down to earth, and honest about his doubts and knowledge. 2 exams, some quizzes, 1 essay.
Blackmon is one of the best lecturers on campus. He keeps his lectures interesting and is extremely helpful if you are having trouble understanding some of the concepts. One of the only professors I learned anything from this year. The last unit is mind blowing. If you get an A after 3 tests you don't need to take the final! Very laid back class.
He's literally the most average teacher I've ever had. He's not incredible, but he's not a nightmare. Just sort of there. He needs to get a bit organized though, his lectures can be hard to follow. But overall I'd recommend him, he seems like a nice guy who knows his stuff. He just needs to work on his stage presence a bit!
Although he is enthusiastic about the subject the lectures feel like they are SO LONG. I have never hated a class as much as this one. I think he should use PowerPoints because he is hard to follow so it is helpful to go to class (he takes attendance). He's helpful if you go to him.
Honestly, Professor Blackmon was an outstanding professor. He is very organized and is pretty much crystal clear on what he wants and expects out of you. He makes it his mission to make sure everyone understands the topic being discussed. Definitely would have him for a professor again.
James is a genuinely awesome & caring professor. He teaches with wide-eyed wonder and his enthusiasm about the subject is contagious. Class structure is less directed on pedagogical requirements and focused on an overall knowledge of critical thinking. 3 exams 2 hw assignments. TAKE THIS CLASS.
The tests and assignments are essential to at least get a B or so. He explains really well, but can occasionally be disorganized because he teaches at another university as well. Towards the end, he was really understanding and extremely nice. He helped a lot and everything was easy to understand. I would take another class if he taught it.
He actually took the advice of one of the students who complained a few posts below and started using many PowerPoints in all his lectures! You can tell he does anything in his power to help each student. He provides tips on how to be successful in any class in the syllabus and provides a link to how to become a pro at writing philosophical papers!
2 short essay hw, 1 midterm and 1 final. there are few pop quizzes randomly mostly end of a topic. these are considered as participation points as he said it wont hurt your grades. the midterm and final consist of 2 parts. one is mc questions and one short essay. he has a ta which sometimes grades hard
Our ethics of technology class was truly amazing. We had a great time discussing all sorts of complex philosophical issues. Mr. Blackmon is extremely cool and interesting. Participate in the class and ask questions! A few of us were the only ones raising our hands at first, but eventually everyone opened up. Blackmon really is an amazing teacher.
Took Dr. Blackmon last semester (Spring of 2016) and really enjoyed his class. 3 Journals, 4-5 Quizzes, Midterm and a Final. Power point slides are projected during lecture and are updated on iLearn. Take notes, review the slides and you'll do fine on the quizzes. Be sure to attend class as some information isn't on the slides.
Two journals, a midterm, and a final. He gave out 3 surprise quizzes, but these don't hurt your grade. He posts the powerpoints, additional readings & articles on iLearn. I could have skipped buying the book and course reader because he goes through the key points. His lectures are interesting & he's nice!
Professor Blackmon seems like a genuine guy, who truly enjoys his profession. Graded on 1 midterm, a final and 2 journal entries, basically short papers. The class was interesting enough, but asking questions during the course will definitely make it more enjoyable.
Blackmon is passionate about the subject and teaches with enthusiasm. Do the readings or you'll be lost, he doesn't break down concepts well. Attendance isn't mandatory but a lot of material is covered every class, so don't skip. Graded on a midterm, final and two journals, each worth 25% of your grade. He's nice to look at so thats a plus.
Great class and definitely qualified to teach it. He Might get sidetracked if there are good conversationalists in the class, listen to the audio lectures/assignments outside of class and discuss them with peers, it will help you understand the concepts better.
Professor Blackmon's class is really lecture heavy but there are a lot of discussions which keep interesting. The tests were mostly true/false and were focused on philosopher's opinions rather than concepts. There are 5 journal entries nd 1 midterm/1 final. He gives harmless quizzes that can boost your grade!
This class was interesting. I think James did a good job at keeping the class as simple as possible by not getting deep into abstract cognitive science concepts. There only are a few journals and 2 exams which are based on the presentations he does which is based on the books given in class. As long as you study the presentations youll do well.
Not as bad as I thought. I was honestly dreading a course that consisted of computer science course but Blackmon kept it very black and white and made class enjoyable. As long as you keep up with the reading and journals, you will pass.
He clearly knows what he is talking about and has been at this subject manner for a while. Welcomes all questions and really does a good job of explaining concepts if you ask him twice. Despite his large classroom size and the accessibility you have to him during the lecture, he is a great professor that can teach you a lot if you pay attention.
He's a good man and a good professor who clearly cares for his students' learning. Your grade only depends on two papers and two exams, which you should do well on if you attend lecture, take good notes and study his slides. I just wish his grading criteria for the open-ended questions in his papers were a little clearer. Recommended!
Lectures are pretty useless, he just reads the slides when you can read them at home. You're only graded on two journals and two exams, each worth 25% of your grade. There's really no need to go to class except on exams, he posts the slides online.
-Prof. Blackmon was great, took his PHIL 621 (minds, computers, brains) class, and he had clear criteria from the start. -Its good to come to class gives a good insight into class lectures. -Uses videos to keep students awake and engaged. -Fun questions asked in the required journals. -Come to class and read the material, that it.
this class was easy and he made it so much fun. his practice quizzes are the same as the real quizzes. if you read just what he gives you 100%, you will get an A.
Professor Blackmon is very knowledgable and passionate about philosophy and the idea of critical thinking. Highly recommend his class if you're finding credit for a critical thinking course. Really enjoyed his class! Thanks Professor!
second worst professor i have ever had
He grades from 3 exams, 4 journal entries and 1 gets dropped from each 1. Plenty of ec from the quizzes and in class writing because they are not graded unless he likes your work he'll give u extra points. Chill guy always on time, lecture is recorded and posts it up on ilearn so u wont miss a lecture. if u listen to the lecture and read easy pass.
Maybe the best prof at sfsu, his worksheets are the same as the exams, pretty nice person too and explains well. I think he has an interesting personality too!
The whole class is filled with very dense information that's hard to digest. Would not recommend the class. I tried reading the book and I feel like you have to be a scientist to understand the material. Not written for your average person. The lectures were the most boring lectures I have ever sat through.
Professor Blackmon is great; he is caring and kind & cool. the class is interesting if you pay attention.
Professor Blackmon is one of a kind. His class is very interesting. His lessons were precise and straight to the point but fun to listen to. His slides were detailed and he put effort into each lesson. A few and easy assignments. Study and tests will be easy. His office hours are always available, if not hell meet outside of them. Answered emails.
Professor Blackmon is really nice and understanding. He doesn't grade to hard but the exams are kind of tricky. I suggest you don't take this class if you're not in to philosophy. It gets kind of boring. Theres 4 journals and 3 exams that make up the semester grade. Study for the exams!
One of the best Philosophy professors out there, he is detailed when it comes to the lectures and just assigns readings majority of the time and some quizzes on occasion. If you miss any class(es), recorded lectures are available via ilearn to catch up on. Overall, I would highly recommend taking this professor.
He is very detailed on his PowerPoint presentations. Not much in terms of assignments, he'll assign Journals, Quizzes, and Exams. When taking the exam online, he uses a timeframe, in which for example, he can leave the exam open between 8am-10pm for one day only whenever the exams are scheduled to be taken on. In all, I would recommend him!!!!!!!!!
Dr Blackmon is some of the best SFSU has got to offer and believe me Ive been here for quite some time, thats only due to my changing majors all the time. If you need some psych credit or just need to make up a few units, I highly recommend him.
Professor Blackmon encourages instructor-student communication. He's pretty strict about late assignments, primarily because of his drop-one policy (which drops the lowest exam and journal grade). Nevertheless, reach out to him. It's important to solidify what you need to do well in this course, especially if you need accommodations.
Professor Blackmon for PHIL 621 was THE best class I have taken at SFSU spring 2022. His lectures are so interesting and interactive with class. If I could take his class every semester I would. Highly recommend! We had 3 required journals and 3 tests (lowest score on test dropped).
This class is okay, there is not a lot of graded assignments making it easy to get a bad grade. The professor talks much of the three hour allotment making the class sometimes unbearable to sit through. He is nice though and clearly cares about the subject he teaches.
So far, we have had 1 test and 1 homework assignment, so you're screwed if you don't do well. Pls take those seriously bc it's looking like will only have 2-3 tests and 2-3 assignments in the grade book. The test was average difficulty and the 1 assignment was easy. I would rec his class to ppl who don't like a lot of homework! really nice guy too!
Do not take this class asynchronous. The way he explains concepts in the is super super confusing, but he is willing to help you during his office hours. The exams are straightforward, and the journals are lengthy. Honestly he's behind on grading and your grade percentages aren't shown, so it's difficult to prepare for upcoming exams.
This class has a ton of great info and you'll learn a lot about "Minds, Brains, and Computers". Fair grader, everything is done by the book as laid out in the syllabus. The online format was convenient. Lectures on point. A few test questions were hard to understand but he gives you some extra points for basic stuff. Nice too.
He is very understanding. Is always encouraging students to share their opinion and makes sure to validate whatever opinions were said and is a gentle corrector. He gave us some grace during the election which I appreciated very much. Lectures are more discussion based. Make sure to take notes, it's easy to miss some things. Overall great professor
I would not say that he is a poor professor, but his Canvas is updated sparingly, manual grading is slow, and there are so few assignments that each one is weighted significantly. The lectures are a bit lengthy. It is not an incredibly difficult course, but may not be suitable for students that like to plan ahead and prepare as much as possible.
You would think “Science of Ethics and Technology” immerses itself in ethical dilemmas in a wide range of concerns like the growing concern of AI technology. Unfortunately this course ONLY concerns itself on reproductive technology. It would b ok IF THE COURSE WAS LABELED SO. Lectures become boring, realizing it would be the only topic discussed.
hes not a bad teacher, setup of the course isnt very good, up until literally a week ago we only had 2 things in the grade book, it was exams, extra credit with every exam which is nice, sprung a group project on us with less than 3 weeks in the semester and the project is due 2 days b4 final exam is due, lowest exam score dropped, not totally bad
Solid professor. Took his formal logic class online. He teaches out of a Paul Teller text. Would be 5 stars if he conducted class in-person.
The course was very easy with not much work to do. There are 3 exams and extra credit opportunities with them. The professor doesn't grade frequently and so far has not graded anything but the extra credit from the first exam. I would not recommend this professor for someone who likes to plan ahead and know what their grades are looking like.
