Class is extremely boring & you will need a very large binder for all of the hand outs!!!
I had him last fall & thought he was too hard at the time, but since then I've had much harder professors. This class was good preparation for Eng. 102. At least he was very clear about what he expected, unlike another professor I've had. Attendance is mandatory--he'll try to fail you if you skip too many classes.
This professor tells you exactly what he expects from your essays. If you follow the detailed directions he provides and put some kind of effort into your work, you'll pass without issue. He tends to babble and he looks like a Vogon! (Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy)
Very hard professor, requires a lot of notebooks. I took the six week summer class and it was a lot of writing, but if you do the work, you will pass. I actually learned a lot in that short period of time.
Don't take this class if you don't need to. He lectures the entire class. He doesn't like to hear comments or questions, so don't bother. Boswell = nutty professor..no lie they look EXACTLY alike. He laughs at his own lame jokes cuz no one else does. I found him to be a tad rude as well. Oh and buy the biggest binder you can find for his handouts.
I had him for the Summer semester and al he had to say about my work was visit the Writing Center, I did, and he still failed my papers. I even had multiple tutors look at one paper he gave me a "D" on. I dropped to preserve my GPA. I am a "B" student and work way harder than his grade reflected. He was very rude everytime I spoke with him.
I took him for the fall semester and all he had to say to me alos was go to the writing center. I recieve an C in his class and I went to the writing center every paper. The one thing I can say taking his Quizzes is easly because he do go over the test before time. So that is a good thing
Not easy to talk to. Over loads you in homework. Can not ask questions in his claas room because he does not give you the opportunity.
He is horrible. when he talks, he just goes on and on and on the entire time. He gives you way to much homework that takes all of your time. If you have a job, passing his class is impossible because he feels all your time should be spent working on his class. During class he just talks so do not bother raising your hand he wont call on you.
Definitely not the professor that you want to take in a summer session. The amount of work assigned was unbearable. Unless you plan to spend virtually all of your free time writing, take somebody else. Class lectures are extremely boring. He is not friendly or easy to get along with. Oh yeah, DON'T BE LATE FOR CLASS or he will call you out.
This guy's a jerk but his class was by far the easiest I've ever taken in college. Easy A if you follow instructions.
He is a bad teacher. He just rambles on in class. This class really has nothing at all to do with english. He does overload on homework but it is easy worksheets every class and Hard papers every other week. He grades hard and dones't really try to help you though.
When I fist started his class he came across as rude, but the more classes i took i started to understand that he wasn't rude, he is just strick. He gives good advice about how to make your papers better, and i feel he grades pretty fair. Some people hated him, and others liked him. It all depends on what kind of personality you have.
Professor Boswell was a great professor despite what people might say. He tells you exactly the way he wants the papers and tells you everything to include in the papers. His quizes are pretty easy. If you go to class and include everything in the paper like he said you will do fine. I wanted to take him for 102 but he only teaches it in the summer
Looks like a Vogon from The Hitchhiker's Guide. Rambles in class so make sure you get lots of sleep before attending. Follow his clear cut guidelines for how to write your papers and you'll do just fine.
Definitely not the instructor you want to take for an easy "A" but you will learn great writing techniques. He does tend to ramble, but in his rambling there is great teaching. Pay attention and do the work and you will pass the class.
I hear a lot of people bash Professor Boswell for being mean and rude, but it is only because he is fed up with people expecting things to come to them easily. He wants you to try your hardest and I would highly suggest him if you want to receive a higher education for lower price. Very smart; inspiring. Got an A, but I worked my end off for it!
If you're going to college to learn, take his class. If you want to be a slacker, don't. I got an A in the class & learned so much. As long as you do what he asks, you'll get a good grade. People who don't like him are the one's who want an Easy A. Skip college completely if that's what you want.
He's rude, and talks about his own life way to much. You learn about how to be an educated student for 3 weeks. He thinks people just skip class and aren't sick. His paper's aren't to hard as long as you actually put in an effort but going to class and sitting through it is torture.
He was not helpful with answering questions. He often brags about himself, and tends to ramble aimlessly.
I took Mr.Boswell in a 6 week summer course. I do not thing he was hard, he just wants his papers a certain way. The good thing is, he tells you EXACTLY how he wants the papers. He also gives you everything in advance, so it's not a shock when things are due. He writes everything up on the board every, single day! I got an A in his class.
I had professor Boswell for two semesters of college. He is strict when it comes to turning in assignments on time, which in my opinion is a good thing. His classes were challenging and really made you think. He is really intelligent and knows what he is teaching about. I enjoyed having him for a professor and would recommend him to anyone else.
IF I COULD CURSE, THIS COMMENT WOULD BE A LOT LONGER!AN ARROGANT, EGOTISTICAL BUFFOON WHO IS SO OUT OF TOUCH WITH EVERYTHING THAT HE DOESN'T REALIZE THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN OPINION (WHICH HE WILL PUSH HIS ON YOU EVERY CLASS AND GET P.O.'D IF YOU HAVE ONE OF YOUR OWN)AND FACT (WHICH HE FAILS TO TEACH).GLAD THIS SEMESTER IS OVER..WASTE OF TIME+MONEY.
Boswell is a very organized professor, and expects his students to be organized as well. He likes his papers EXACTLY as he asks them (I was docked points for having one extra paragraph) but if you do what he wants you to do the class will be pretty easy and your writing technique will improve. His handwriting is very hard to understand, though...
The positives: knows his stuff, wants you to succeed. The negatives: poor communicator, very rude and condescending, takes forever to grade papers. Bottom line: don't take him unless you need to
Pos: Easy to pass as long as you follow all directions. He's all about his minor details. Neg: He is by far the most condescending professor I've ever had, and was extremely rude to anyone who spoke in class. He doesn't like anything negative or opinionated about the work we study. He has no original ideas, just ideas he's found from other people.
seriously please don't take unless you have to. you will rip your hair out because of his boring lectures. run away from his class.
Mr. Boswell was GREAT even though many unmature people say otherwise. He was extremely clear and was not that hard. He gives lots of chances for extra credit if you are a person that lives off of extra credit! The man really KNOWS how to TEACH unlike some profs Ive had at HACC. You WANT to take his class believe me!
Took him for 6 weeks class on summer, the papers were a lot but they were easy as long as you follow EXACTLY what he wants. He gave a lot of opportunities for extra credit points and gave clear study guides before the test, just memorize them and you'll pass them. I got A in his class!
Proff. Boswell was the worst teacher I have had at HACC. He does not teach well, help his students, or communicate well. I spent most of the semsester creating a grudge toward Englisg, when I had previously enjoyed it. Do not take him!
He helped me out a lot during the semester. I did better on his papers than I did in high school which shows that he really cares to help you succeed. I received two A's on both papers we did so far so his papers are not hard to do.
Professor Boswell is not cooperative and not pleasant to be around. Nothing he teaches has to do with English. The only thing that has to do with English is the outlines of the essays..which is pretty much the same for every paper. Don't bother asking him questions because he will either blow you off or make you look like an idiot.Dont take him.
Terrible teacher. Exclusively lectures and is miserable at it. Yells at you if you raise your hand in class for any reason. Very rude all around. Talks non-stop about television (which I think is his only interest), christianity, and how terrible young people are (but how great he is). Avoid.
Boswell is extremely disorganized and relies heavily on handouts, quizes on material unrelated to english, and doesn't follow syllabus. He also has a very strict and uncomprehensive grading policy. The assignment requirements he states in class often contradict handouts he references, and the students grade suffers bc he won't admit his errors.
First of all, he is the hardest grading professor I have ever had. To him, a "C student" is someone who does everything that is asked of them, a "B student" is someone who does everything exceptionally well, an "A student" goes beyond what is asked. I strongly disagree with his reasoning, however I think he prepared me for my next class. your call
He is a terrible professor he doesn't explain anything in class. He is really unorganized and his grading system is unrealistic. I wouldn't recommend him to anyone!
Terrible teacher and disorganized. Refuses to work with students and has unrealistic standards to his desire. Would never recommend to deal with and to just drop the course and find a better professor. Does not explain material and relies on personal opinions to grade essays to his standards.
His classes pick up pace quickly. He tells you what he wants in your papers so you better follow the rules if you want to pass. Don't bother asking for help, he is very condescending and will just make you figure it out yourself. Organization is crucial. Take this class if you are ready to learn how to write a proper paper. Also, don't miss a class
Professor Boswell is old-school. He has high expectations and makes every effort to give students the opportunity to succeed. I highly recommend him.
Professor Boswell believes in hard work, discipline, and punctuality. He gives A LOT of smaller assignments, but if you put in the work, remain disciplined enough to complete the assignments, and get them AND yourself to class ON TIME, then you'll have no problem with his 101 course. His rules are old school, but as an older student, I liked that!
It seems like he could be a nice person to talk to. He jokes around up in front of the class but when you go talk to him for help, or a quick answer, he talks down to you, and makes you feel not worth his time. I honestly hate wasting my money on teachers like this at HACC.
He is an awful teacher. He left me nasty voicemail, after missing my first class out of 16 classes so far, the voice mail said I would never make it in my profession. After not answering him, he proceeded with an email, in ALL CAPS, saying the same thing. He always talks down to students and does not help with any questions. do not take this class.
Professor Boswell is a great teacher! I currently have him for my first semester, and have a B. I've never gotten above a C in English classes in high school. His class is not easy, but paying attention, and taking his hints to being a 'good student' is very helpful! My grades have only improved in his class!
Worst professor I have taken at HACC. Boswell is condescending and prattles about useless info. The quizzes are a piece of cake as he gives a study guide with the answers which is verbatim on the quizzes. But he assigns many papers, journals, and projects. But he doesn't get them back to you until the end of the semester! So there isn't feedback.
His speaking is not clear. Didn't learn anything at his class. Any time I asked question he got angry at me and didn't ever answer them. Paid for text book and his own written handbook, he only used his own written book which was copied from pics, it was not clear to study it. All he does is drinking soda and makes jokes that aren't funny.
He is not helpful. We spent more time going over old newspaper comics and him cracking stupid jokes that are not funny instead of actually learning anything. If you have any problems, he will not work with you. This class is pointless if you take him.
Horrible Teacher! Spends all the time making stupid jokes and going over weird comics that doesn't even make sense. Worst class I ever took!
Professor Boswell is a great teacher. As long as you pay attention, keep neat notes, and attend class, you should not have a problem receiving a good grade!
I didn't learn that much from Boswell's ranting about useless information and he was very unapproachable. Although, reading example papers, picking unusual topics, and going to the writing center to have papers proofread got me an A in his class. I would recommend finding another ENG 101 professor if English isn't your strong point.
Prof. Boswell is the worst teacher! He gives you a stack of handouts everyday that you will never even use (a waste of paper and space). Also, he HATES when you ask questions during class. Will refuse to answer them. Worst yet, he will talk down to you like you are a child. Plus He can be very rude and disprespectul. Stay away from his class!!!!!
Course was easy as long as you do your work and show up. He talks a lot, but in his lectures he adds a lot of clue on what he likes. Papers were the bulk of the classwork. Quizzes were very easy.
First I must say this class is not hard at all Boswell doesn't involve classmates at all he just lectures all of the classes There is no discussions All of his tests and quizzes he gives out a review sheet that has all the answers Most of your grade depends on how you do on all your papers He grades very fairly I slept through lectures
He's a great guy, just not a great teacher. All he does is lecture and use the over head. I don't feel like I learned anything. It's so boring. It feels like I'm taking another FS class.
Mr. Boswell is extremely rude to students, and provides little to no help either. If you need English, please just choose any other professor.
Bored during class, lectures almost every day.
Worst professor you could ever imagine. He uses stupid comics in his lectures and expects students to write down every word he says. He thinks too highly of himself and it doesn't help his case. He just rambles on and on about himself and how "successful" he is. Waste of money, time, and credits.
He is not tough. Many people complained but in all honesty they are the ones who did not feel like doing the work. If you are serious about your schooling there is no better teacher. He does expect you to pay attention and follow directions. Many of the comments say he is not willing to help but he is if you try! Go to the writing center!
Worst English professor i have ever had to take. He does nothing but put slides on the projector and reads them word for word. Every class is incredibly boring. He also never hands back your papers before the next one is due so you have no idea how to improve before handing in the next. Avoid this class.
Do not take his class
He's very boring ,don't stay on track, laughs at his own jocks, hard grader, loves for people to go to the writing center
Professor Boswell's class is honestly not that bad. The lectures are extremely boring and Professor Boswell is very condescending to students and rude when questions are asked, but tests and quizzes are very easy. Go to the writing center and pay attention in class and you will do fine.
Very specific in what he wants. Also, he is very old fashioned. He just reads off of the overhead slides. Quizzes were easy.
prof boswell is a good professor. knows how to teach english and does it well. you dont need the textbooks if you are tight on money. he tells you exactly what he wants and if you can follow that, youll be fine. gives study guides and very sufficient prep for tests/quizzes. lectures are long and boring. just make sure you take notes.
Boswell expects you to show up to class and is more than willing to lower your grade a whole letter if you miss a certain amount. I can honestly say I learned next to nothing in his class. Loves to prove how "smart" he is. Never gets assignments back in a timely manner. He said "so forth and so on" 197 times this semester (and missed 5 classes)
This is prob the worst teacher I have ever had. So i will leave the comments out and tell you one thing. DONT TAKE HIS CLASS AND REPORT HIM.
Boswell is not that bad. The quizzes are easy. The lectures are boring, but all he does he read directly off the slides. You only need the WB for the class, you don't need the other textbooks. You basically just write essays. He doesn't grade that bad. He gives you extra credit for going to the writing center. It was an easy A for me!
He was gr8 8/8 m8, don't be l8.
A great teacher! Straightforward quizes and tests. Wants his students to succeed.
He literally just stands in front of the class and reads from the text book for about an hour. The papers are insanely difficult and high expectations he has for them. If you suck up to him you'll get an A though.
Stands upfront ranting all class, most boring professor to date. Makes you listen to these weird recordings of himself from 1980. Buy like $300 in books, use them like twice. Has his own book you have to buy and his papers do not align with MLA standards, more like Boswell standards. Very rude avoid him.
I could not handle with this professor because he requires a lot of papers. He expects 7 essays and many junk papers around it in one semester. In addition, I had to submit for him 4 journals and the other assignments in class. However, he is a good guy love students were improved. If you pick him, I think you don't have time for the others.
The only good thing about this class was for every test and quiz, he gives you a study guide giving you the exact questions and answers that he's looking for. All he does is read off of the powerpoint and his notes, and if he didn't have them he wouldn't teach. He gives too many papers and never grades anything in timely manner. DO NOT take him.
I don't like him because he is a hard grader, he requires too many paper in the end of semester. He would like to joke himself, he just stand up front of class and then, read read and read. Besides, he is old fashioned, he loves everybody are VERY VERY VERY successful in writing. Sometimes, we don't necessary to push too hard only one course.
Just do not take the class.
I will never take this class again! All he does is talk about what he wants, none of it make sense or correlates with the projects or exams he gives. He is rude when you ask him anything. The only good thing about this class is that the study guides are pretty much the quiz. I suggest another Professor.
Hated this class. Teacher is rude and gives no good feedback.
I wanted to like him, I just couldn't. I would ask him questions after class that showed I was putting in effort and he would answer it like he was pissed I was asking. He is very picky about assignments and ATTENDANCE. This hum class was more work than my english class. He does give good feedback on papers if you do well though
He is a very good Professor. You will want to do all of the writing assignments that are given. If you think he is a hard teacher and you do not do well in his class then you do not have a good work ethic to begin with. If you work hard your grade will reflect it. He does have lectures I personal like that because I am a shy person. He is great!
He is clear about what he wants in his assignments, I thought they were easy. His quizzes and tests are word for word on the study guides he gives you. Don't try to participate in class because he acts like you are an inconvenience. Easy A though so whatever.
Be warned, he goes off on a lot of tangents and the first few weeks of class are on his syllabus and handouts, and trust me, there are a LOT of handouts (I had a Boswell designated binder and filled it.) Good things: he clearly lays out what he likes to see in the papers and tests and if you listen and take notes, you'll get a good grade.
On the first day of class, he seemed rather passionate, but the longer I went to his class, the more I realized how terrible of a person he was. He is judgmental and egotistical. His lectures are boring because all he did was complain about how students now a days have it easy. Do NOT take this class.
The rudest professor Ive ever had. Extremely mean to students for absolutely no reason. Numerous times students asked a simple question, and he responded very rudely. Makes students not want to ask questions, not a good professor. Needs to retire his material and update it to something from the 21 century. Also needs to work on time management.
Professor Boswell is a professor who is tough, however, genuinely cares about his students that attempt to do their job and get it done, show up and do the work. Prof Boswell is very educated and has an immense amount of knowledge to share if you just pay attention and listen to him during lectures. He does his job well and will push all his students
Only textbook you need of the three he says to get is "The Art Book". Just show up to class and use the study guides for quizzes and tests to your advantage. He spells out exactly what needs to be done. All assignments are busy work, if you can get yourself interested about the topics he gives you it will remove some of the monotony.
I LOVE professor Boswell. He can get off topic but he always comes back and continues with the lesson. No mater what he's going through in his life he makes sure he puts his work in first. Like any other teacher if youre late he gets mad, if you don't turn in an assignment he gets mad. Gives a bunch of extra credit opportunity.
Professor Boswell is one of those professors that you have to wait to let them grow on you. He is a hard grader but it is only to benefit the student writing. This is not the professor that asks for a lot of participation which I did not like but for most people it is a benefit. Definitely will be taking him again.
Easy A, but it's the most boring 50 min class of your life. He gives you the answers to all the tests and quizzes. Has a lot of papers but lays out exactly what he wants. Wouldn't take again, because I didn't learn a single thing. Only need "the art book", and only for a book report. Easy A if you apply yourself.
Assigns a ridiculous amount of essays and reading. The lectures will literally bore you to sleep as you're just watching him shuffle back and forth from the desk and the overhead projector to get 1200 different transparencies of old notes and comics. Missed class once and got talked at for 10 minutes and he refused to look at me. Rude.
He is very old school. Grades will never be on D2L (Brightspace), so you will have to keep track on your own. There are six mandatory major papers to write. There are only about three quizzes (he makes them up himself); they are effortless. The book is unnecessary in class; it is only used at home. Go to the writing center for extra credit.
I respect him, good teacher just tough on papers.
He's a great professor. I'm glad I took his class during my first semester. I learned many things from his class. He gives you life advises and shows the class comic strips.
This guy is definitely mad. You'll find him off topic about 40 min of the class. Talks about himself more than the lessons. His quizzes arent on english. They are questions he comes up with about random people he finds and asks about when they were born and what they wore when they had their first interview. All you haveyto do is write the papers.
English is usually my favorite class but Professor Boswell made me suffer. I got grades but he is one of the worst teachers I've. ever experienced. His lectures have nothing to do with what the writing assignments are and god forbid you walk in a minute late. I am a good student and he belittled me numerous times. I do not respect him at all
Don't take his class if you want a good grade
Tough
This class is really heavy on papers, so be ready to write a lot. But do not expect to get any of your grades back in a timely manner. It was the end of the semester and I still do not know what grades I got on papers from last month. How can u expect students to turn work in on time when you can't even grade things on time. Poor excuse of a prof
Professor Boswell is old school, he doesn't use d2l and uses an overhead projector but for all that, I will say he made me a better writer. He is the type of Professor you love to hate but if you take his feedback whether positive or negative and apply it future papers you will do well.
he is a very intense teacher, on the papers he uses as examples that he says are perfect don't ever receive 100% he is a good teacher and taught me to write better but at what cost. he is very mean in his classes when he teaches and gets made at students for not turning papers in on time but takes over a month to get back should be help to same sta
I was unable to at times submit papers due to IT problems and to make sure I submitted the papers on time I would email him. He would thoroughly reprimand me and say I should've just called IT to deal with it. I was going to do that but wanted to make sure I submitted the work on time for the full grade. He was very short in lectures as well.
Boswell is probably one of the worst teachers Ive taken. He takes forever to get grades back to you, and the textbooks that he has you buy you dont even use.
Got off topic a lot and the lecture's were boring and repetitive. He would take points off for no reason sometimes without explaining why. He gave out WAY too many essays with a paper report sheet, outline, organization form, rough draft, final draft.. he wanted too much. I don't recommend this professor but overall he's a decent teacher.
If you can make it through his lectures without dosing off you are a god send. He goes off topic 90% of the time and he is always complaining about something. Due dates get extremely confusing and you are rushed to write an insane amount of papers if class is canceled and you never get your grades back in a timely manner. STAY AWAY
I loved Professor Boswell. Yes, he was tough with getting things done but why not. Real life is tough. He made sure we knew which assignments were coming up and which were due which I appreciated as I lead a very busy life. He didn't like when ppl showed up late for class but once again, that's understandable because you can't lead a class late.
Tough professor, but if you put in the work, you'll become a better writer. The class has a lot of papers, so use Unstuckstudy and stay on top of deadlines. Attendance is a must.
If you want to know what this class is like, look at all of the reviews from the past 15 years on this site. All the same complaints over a decade and a half. He is an egotistical and rude man. His classes are boring and use similar graphics to those you would see in an Elementary school classroom. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS
He talks way too much and goes off topic all the time. His class is good if you want to write 5-6 papers a semester. He does get mad if you miss class even if its excused and he will be passive aggressive to the class about missing class. He also isn't great at answering emails so be prepared for that.
lecture heavy but you can zone out. #1 yapper, and just talks about random comics and quotes. He makes the essay requirements easy. DON'T buy the textbooks he tells you to but he literally sends everything out weekly, so don't waste your money. Overall he's okay, a lot of easy papers, but his lectures are very monotone and boring.
He is easy to understand. He also responds to emails for any questions or concerns as soon as possible. he is very thorough and detailed. Might i also add, he is so organised and listen, he will email his students periodically to submit assignments before the deadlines. I appreciated that alot!
The biggest struggle with his classes is staying awake, he sits there and reads slideshows the entire semester. Half of the content in these slideshows has nothing to do with the course, and is just random comics or stats. He's also quite the yapper, yet barely explains his expectations for assignments, and when he does it's largely incoherent.
Very passionate about the things he teaches. Attendance is mandatory and for good reason, why go to school if you don't plan to show up. Professor Boswell made everything very clear and easy to understand, and gave great feedback for every assignment when relevant.
Needs to retire, he rambles for whole lectures but demands that you are there for every lecture and will be passive aggressive about leaving the class room or missing class. He will not grade papers until months later. There was an essay due each week with homework papers and journal entries due in between. Worst professor so far.
Honestly, I didn't have the best experience when I had this professor. He does give a study guide for the quizzes & all but there are a lot of back to back essays & yes he does offer second chances but he's not always open to explaining clearer and reads the same thing over & over on the projector board, usually things that none of us care about.
