knows his subject, be sure to do reading as he test mostly from reading, very organised lectures, willing to help if you have problems, don't take if you don't like to write each of his classes requires two large papers.
Very hard grader on papers.
Very good professor, every class session is like a performance. Take advantage of his office hours. Also be sure to keep a copy of your work, if you turn it in anytime other than class time. He's a very good teacher and wants you to learn how think.
He is not the easiest grader but he is a very fair grader. You learn a lot by showing up for lectures.Brent is willing to help you out if you just ask him. He also returns midterms and the first draft of essay with extensive comments, to help improve.
2 papers... work hard on the homeworks... one quiz... open notes/open book tests.
He talks loud. He'll keep you awake. Hard grader. Do the homework! It helps. And participate. it's 15% of your grade! it'll raise your grade really high. Write at least 8 pages on your essays or you'll fail get an F!
Great teacher, among the best I've ever had. His methods are clear and his expectations consistent; he is a very fair grader.
Had him for an online class. If you can stay up with the work, it was not difficult. A lot of people have trouble just because it is an online course though. He is more than willing to help and definitely knows his material. Class was interesting.
Brent was ok but the paper for this class is totally useless but he puts a lot of weight on it...he asks for your opinion but will tell you its wrong...he knows his stuff & all but i refuse to take nemore classes w/ him.
Dr. Brent is one of the greatest teachers I've ever had. If you're capable of taking notes, you're capable of getting an A. He'll talk you through any assignment you have trouble with.
NOT A GOOD TEACHER AT ALL. VERY AMBIGUOUS WITH PAPER AND OUTLINE REQUIREMENTS BEFOREHAND, BUT BECOMES SPECIFIC WHEN CRITICIZING YOU FFOR NOT FOLLOWING HIS UNCLEAR DIRECTIONS. VERY ELITIST AND STUBBORN. BUT IF YOU ARE GOOD AT SUCKING UP TAKE HIM. DISGRACE!
Dr. Brent made this class fun. I liked his lectures and his approach to the subject. He is a fair grader and very helpful.I will take more classes with him in the future.
Brent was one of the best teachers I have ever had. He made the class very enjoyable and was great at keeping the class interesting. Every Political Science major should take a class from him.
Brent makes me wish I was a polisci major. This class was great, and if you really appreciate a good lecture class, this class is the one to take.

Professor Brent was an outstanding professor. Now that I am a teacher I truly understand just how good he was. Probably the best Poli Sci professor I have had. His discussions are especially thought provoking, and he is very approachable and helpful. Expected the best out of his students.
I took the intro class and he was THE BEST professor I have ever had. He has fun when he teaches, and somehow, he is able to make bland court cases and senate/house activity seem INCREDIBLY interesting. He really is the best prof I've had...he isnt that hard either if you study what he tells you 2
okay in amount of work. Hella helpful. Always willing to help you out. However, don't argue with this guy unless you're one hella of a good lawyer because he will eat you alive!!!!!!!!!!!!! Seriously!!!
Great professor, had difficulty in previous class with him, but I was able to understand his technique in this class to complete my focus, excellent instructor with a passion for law.
Greates Prof ever! Super helpful! NEVER boring!!

He is a great teacher who is willing to go the extra mile for his students
Prof Brent is one of the best teachers i have ever had. His classes are always entertaining and the stuff he teaches is very applicable to your career and your everyday life. Awesome teacher.
Very helpful and clear. Take his class.

Really good professor, by far the best. my major is not poly sci but i want to minor in it after i take the class. the way he teaches is very very interesting. i learned alot that will prepare me for law school in the future.
Nice guy, laid back, accurate and helpful. Caution, he does not have paitence for immature and stupid people and he will make you feel stupid. He has a bit of an attitude if you catch him on a wrong day
easy class. this guy is more liberal than George Soros, Hillary Clinton and Ralph Neas combined, and he doesn't care to entertain much of the conservative viewpoint. uses a lot of democrat talking points in his discussions, but teaches a fairly balanced curriculum for tests and papers.
Class was very interesting...his lectures are very interesting..only one essay assigned.. class worth taking
Love him! He demands academic excellence. I was a student a while ago and will never forget his class
This teacher was a lot of fun and made most of the class lectures interesting. Be prepared for every class, you will look like and idiot if you have not done the reading. He has no patience for people not applying themselves. I really enjoyed his class and would take him again, that is once I recover from his tests!
dr. brent is a challenging prof. u do need the book, and u do need to read. Exams are essays and know all the details and main pts in lectures. Go to class, u will need the notes!!! Took him in winter, and he gave us a midterm, final, and 2 long papers for 3 weeks!! helpful if u ask for help, so take adv. of that, grades in detail on the exams.
His lectures are always up to date, and lets you in on the inside scope of COngress. Very knowlegable, and not boring at all. If you attend all his class, and take good notes, then the tests are pretty easy. the short answers are exactly what he pointed out in class, and the m/c is based off the textbook. Which isn't that bad of a read.
lectures r very clear & knowledgable. his tests r the worst. have to read the book 4 the multiple choice. His essay questions r not that hard but he barely gives any partial credit. STrict Grader! although he curves, does not help at all!! so try to do well in hist & raise ur grade by that. his email did work even work!! so was not approchable
This teacher is very good. Clear lectures, and provides interesting information on the current state of politics. He is overly cynical at times, but this is to be expected of a pol sci professor. One tip: don't stay in the first row if you like your ears, as he speaks ridiculously loud. When taking pol sci, try to take Brent or Schendan, both great
Brent is awesome. He can do a lot of things, including teaching a DJ course for the school radio and being the President of the Polisci dept. People who say he's bad are just sore losers; if he thinks you're wrong you most definitely are! Look at his resume.
This Professor is horrible. Dont get me wrong he has good lectures an makes it easy to listen. But this guy is the hardest grader i've ever had. All his Midterms r ALL ESSAY. The questions arent clear and he expects u to know what he means. Dont take this class if u want to fill a GE Requirement. Dont expect a good grade
This is a really good professor, also, he is head of the political science department. All of his exams are essays and short answers, but sometimes grade really hard. Even though I disagree with some of his political views, I highly recommend him if you want to learn political science as well as judicial politics. Oh yeah, I got a B in his class.
Professor James Brent is really good and he knows his stuff. I highly recommend him for those who wants to go into law. But he doesn't like when you do not read or think because he will make you feel like an idiot and very uncomfortable. Judicial Politics requires lots of reading and analytical thinking. He talks loud, but is willing to help you.
all his exams are essay format. his lectures are very interesting and he's really funnie. i recommend him if you're into poli sci and want to actually learn the stuff, if you're just trying to fulfill GE credit, he may be too hard for you
This professor is an interesting lecturer, also a hard grader. The class I took was about discrimination, and ironically, I felt discriminated against. I felt singled out because he discriminates against the mute. I wonder if I could use what he taught to bring about a lawsuit on him. Silence is my right, what he did was unprofessional.
He is the hardest grader in the world. He grades a student's essay like he is grading a lawyer's argument. Very difficult. If you can take this class with another professor, I urge you to do so. participation is 15% of your grade, which means talking every class!
Incredibly unhelpful as an Advisor. Was unfamiliar with policy and offered no helpful suggestions. Was also very unprofessional.
It is true that Brent is a hard grader but why are you in college if you just want an easy grade? I took his Constitutional law class my last semester before leaving for law school. I am EXTREMELY glad I did. Because of the pace and difficulty of the course I really had to apply myself. If you are pre-law Brent's course is a must.
Fair grader. The homework doesn't really relate directly to the assigned readings, but it really does make you critically think. I emailed him a few times but got no response. Apparently he doesn't like to put the correct email address or even office hours on his syllabus..
Took the online version of the class. The HW is all discussed in video lectures and the books do not correlate. The class is very time consuming and Brent is a tough grader. Some of the assignments are unclear since he does not answer emails from his students. The class isn't terrible but I would not recommend it.
I took the online class, and it was NOT easy. He was a very tough grader and because of that I would not recommend his class. That being said, I actually LEARNED something from him. Take it only if you enjoy arguments and critical thinking. If not, please don't. You will have to put in a lot of work and be miserable along the way!
as far as the online class is concerned; interesting class, but the teacher is useless. refuses to communicated via email of phone and will not make other arrangements. office hours 8-5 monday- thursday. unresponsive to questions. also lectures are 3 years old.its a good subject but with this instructor you wont learn anything.
This guy doesn't respond to any emails. Why even bother giving out email address if he doesn't want to communicate with students? This class was harder than any of my upper division courses. Too much work for 5 weeks; review is only for the online summer course. Never met him, never want to.
He can be a tough grader. But he was nice once I expressed concern. He always answered my emails pretty quickly however he can be sarcastic and comes off a little roude. WATCH THE VIDEOS. The textbook doesn't help very much but those videos are GOLD! They look intimidatng but only one or two are really long. Midterm/Final questions are from videos
I learned a lot in this class, and enjoyed the lectures and reading assignments. Professor Brent is a tough grader, but you do not go to college for an easy A, you go to college to learn.
I took the online version of the class, which was easy enough, but God help you if you ever have an issue. I tried to contact him several times throughout the quarter, but he took over a month to respond to email (and did not respond to the follow up) and regularly skips his office hours.
He's a great teacher. He lectures most of class but his lectures are very interesting. If you actually attempt to study and take good notes the class is very easy. I never opened the textbook, but studied my notes and got an A in the class. He gives you all the info you need during lecture.
Took the online class for political science. As long as you do all the web assignments and put effort and listen to all the directions, you should be fine. His exams and midterms are based off his video lectures, so be sure to take notes and watch it every week. As long as you do all of this, you will have no problem in receiving an A or B.
DO YOUR HW AND GO TO CLASS! only reason why I did poorly. he's a tough grader, boring lecturer, and has a very annoying voice.. but the class should be easy to pass. if you do your work youll be fine
Lots and lots of writing. You have to do a 10 page research paper that takes a lot of time if you want a good grade. I got a 100% on my research paper and still ended up with a low B in the class because he is a tough grader. You have to work hard to earn a good grade. Watch the lectures online, and take notes. I would recommend his online class!
AVOID taking this course with this professor at all cost! I had a horrible experience and the assignments are a joke. He does not help you in any way nor answer your emails. I suggest you take another professor, trust me this class is not an easy A with the amount of work he assigns. You're on your own when you take this course no lecture or notes!
He doesn't actually care to take time and help his students. Emails you back 2 weeks later. It's easy to bs his weekly assignments without doing the reading. His exams are impossible. He grades way too hard. The worst teacher I've ever had hands down.
AVOID taking this professor at all costs. 2 things: 1) I had help from 2 of my friends on his online midterm and still got a C ; for the final I watched his videos and wrote down all info into a doc (got 35/40, but he gave 1 hour instead of usual 2) 2) had a 8% plagiarism from turnitin on his research paper- he gave me 0 points for the whole paper
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. He does a very poor job at explaining instructions and he is an extremely unfair grader. You think you did good on a paper, but he will still give you a grade less than a D and a unjustified comment. Don't take the class!!! You will probably regret it.
Professor Brent is, in one word, fantastic.
Completely self-absorbed and incredibly arrogant! His grading criteria was varied and seemingly random, you can never tell what you're going to get on an assignment. His due dates for papers are vague and you don't hear about them until the day before they're due!!! TERRIBLE ONLINE TEACHER!!! AVOID!!!
Jerke tells Us to use webbook content for exams yet Brent doesn't make it clear at all. Syllabus says nothing about how midterms should b takenplagarism consequences. Prof, why didn't you emphasize plagiarism beforehand?! You need a sign in sheet so u can go easy on those who actually attend, I can honestly say my name wud b on on every session
The worst professor I've ever had.
Dr. Brent is a very enjoyable lecturer and I'm disappointed I won't have him again next semester. He makes the material relevant and memorable. If you go to lecture and read the book, the exams are a breeze. Ignore the people grousing about getting caught cheating, what did they expect?
If you want to FAIL a GE take this. The HOMEWORK was easy, but you needed to do A LOT of researching. There is no quizzes The MIDTERM and FINAL is BS, I read the book and took many notes, and read all the Modules. Still managed to fail me on both. The test has multiple choice, free response and essays. Doesnt care about teaching the students
He has a bit of a pompous attitude. He rushes through material and delivers a lot, all through power points. He won't go back a slide if you miss something. Tests are difficult, no midterm or final study guide, and way to much information to narrow down. Don't bother studying the book that much because there are hardly any test questions from it.
DO NOT TAKE HIM! He is honestly the WORST POLS professor I have yet to meet. He is right and if you raise your hand in class to share your opinion you are WRONG! He likes to demeanor students and their opinions. I HATED taking his course and it was the most biggest regret in college as a junior. DO NOT TAKE HIM!
Simply amazing. If you're interested in law, the Constitution, or the judiciary, Brent is the best. Long papers and if you miss lecture you'll suffer big time, but tests are simple if you take notes and study. Ignore what other people badmouth him for, many of them don't pay attention, never come to class, or aren't interested in the material
I recommend James brent and iris jerke, here is the key to pass James brents portion of class. Attend EVERY class session, use your iphone and RECORD the lecture as an audio podcast. The midterms and final barely cover crap in the book, its all about his LECTURES and slides that he presents. His questions and answers on tests are 99% through lectur
Talks a lot; assigns readings as if that's the only thing there is to do; can't expect much help from this guy. Do yourself a favor and stay away.
Awesome professor. Knows the material extremely well. Not an easy A, but if you like politics you will love this class.
I took this class online. There are a few lectures to listen to (probably takes about an hour, but I would spread it out through a couple of days) and a weekly or bi-weekly assignment depending on how large the assignment is. There is one major paper, one midterm, and one final. Overall, fairly easy class and James Brent is easy to contact.
Have three assigments every weeks and be prepare to spend a lot of time on research to do the assignments. Midterm is impossible. He give 90 minutes to complete 15 multiples choice AND 5 short essays, PLUS one longer essay. He does not reply message...
So many assignments;some questions on midterm never discussed in class;tough grader on exams, expecting you to answer the question very detailed;each assigned to pick a different President to study during the semester, but the process of picking a President is unfair; never mention his rules for each assignments in class;must ask Q's in class.
Do not take this class if you don't want to try.
This is not a cteacher for procrastination. Gives ridiculously hard tests and a huge 8 page essay at the end of the semester. Do not take this teacher if you do not have to. Otherwise good luck.
He is very passionate about his field and he makes the class interesting. He grades according to your effort. Work hard and you will be ok
James Brent is a wonderful professor. It helps going to his office hours since he will get to know you more. He is very enthusiastic when he gives his lectures. The stories he shares are interesting and relevant to his class. The assignments are very doable and reasonable.
Definitely the most difficult political science class I've ever taken, but it was also the best. Professor Brent really has a way of making his class interesting! I absolutely recommend taking him.
He is singlehandly the WORST professor I have taken my entire life. Im starting to think that the good reviews are posted by him. Hes unreasonable. Unreachable. And if you can, AVOID this class.
Brent is a fantastic professor who demands a lot from his students. Students develop an understanding of legal theory in his courses, which is difficult in the undergraduate environment. If you study, read, and ask for help you will succeed.
Dr. Brent's class is really difficult, but it's worth it! Don't be afraid of the challenge because his class is incredibly rewarding if you put in the effort and participate.
Took this class this semester and would say that assignments were never truly correlated with the textbook online. Gives 2 hours on an exams to write 2 long essay questions, 3 short essays and multiple choice. Also is really rude with comments when he grades and does not get back to students for over a period of time.
Do not take this class at all. His grading is complete garbage. I am sorry but this GE class was a waste of time with him.
Glad I took him to tell you the following: avoid him like the bubonic plague. To be fair, he loves his subject but fails to understand... that not EVERYONE loves political science. That being said, prepare to read, write, and spend eons contemplating why you took this class.
There is an assignment almost every week, I follow all the directions and he still grades quite hard as if I am supposed to know everything about political science. It's definitely a passable class, but he's just a really hard grader.
James Brent has no respect for his students and no passion for actually teaching POLS. His online format was terrible and the only valuable input he provided to the class was an hour and a half of video lectures for the whole semester. Midterm and Final were aimless to study for as he just said to read the book. Essay questions on exams.
Please avoid taking this class. He grades like hes some kind of god of political science. Avoid at all times!!!!!!! Please
Just try a reasonable amount. Online lectures are prerecorded & convey info easier than in-class. For in-class, he's very funny, loves to interact with his students, & talk about current events. 6 web-based assignments, 1 midterm, 1 final, one 8-page research paper. Overall, average professor. Easy class to get rid of the GE requirement.
Take him online!! Brent is a great in-person lecturer but goes off-topic and its hard to know what to include in the notes. We went online due to covid and I noticed a huge difference, lecture material was quick and to the point. The first exam was based off in-person knowledge and I got 71%, the second was after we switched and I got a 95.
Difficult exams, and the 8 page essay was a pain.
I highly recommend not taking this class, unless absolutely needed. His grading is awful, seems as if he wants his students to fail. 8-page essay was also awful.
Do not take this class!! He is not a helpful teacher at all and was very rude. You have a 8 page paper do at the end of the semester and he expects you to answer 11 multiple choice, 8 fill in the blank and do 5 essays in 90 min for the midterm and final. He expects you to know everything about POLS. Also lectures were not helpful at all.
This class is difficult and you need to work hard for the grade you want. If you dont study the lectures and take notes on them and the textbook, you will fail your exams. The final paper was long but as long as you read in depth what he wants from you for all of the assignments, your grades will be good. This class is about pushing yourself.
Took POLS 15 as an asynchronous 3 week intersession class. It is a college level class, and Prof. Brent treats it as such. He expects you to be thorough in note-taking, assignments, and tests, but his expectations aren't unreasonable. I didn't like how his content was organized between text book and lectures, but the class was otherwise fine.
Taken this class during Fall 2021 online and some HW you have to go outside and take pictures (Federal vs. State funded). There is an online textbook you need to buy bc the exams use a lot of textbook terms. One research paper and two exams, plus 9 hw assignments. He is a tough grader on HW so take from another professor if this is an req. class.
I usually don't mind when teachers have lots of HW or hard tests in normal classes. I study to do well, but the tests were unreasonably hard for this winter course I took back in the Winter of 2021. If you have to do this class, I would suggest to choose someone else. He is a very hard grader on the HW and overall not great.
Unless you want to put in more effort than usual, don't take any of his classes. I walked in thinking I would do good as usual but i was WAY wrong. He is a very hard grader for the amount of work her asks of you. You will fail the class unless you remember every tiny detail. Grades harshly on the smallest details. -TAKE AT YOUR OWN RISK
A pathetic lecturer to be honest a sad excuse but is typical of the Political Science Department at San Jose State University I would suggest to not even go here the Programs are a joke they only care about money no one ever helps the political science department is always closed and has the worst rated staff of the school.
If you plan on failing, take his class. This teacher is awful and mean. Like seriously please take someone else. I don't mind professors grading tough but this one is very rude and mean. Please beware.
Professor Brent is an amazing professor. Although the class is lecture heavy, you MUST do the modules and take GOOD notes for the midterm/final. At first i struggled in this class, but I ended up paying attention to the lectures more and taking good notes. I ended up with an A in the class. If you want a good grade, you need to work for it.
Accuses every student of using AI. His instructions on writing assignments are never clear. I wrote a paper answering to the prompt and got a terrible grade due to the "suspicion" of AI. I was able to prove that I wasn't using AI and showed every word typed and edit made over the course of time it took me to write it, he never regraded it.
Look up his name and watch his lectures on YouTube. If you don't learn through these types of AI voiced video lectures or do not do well reading large textbooks with specific information on exams, I don't recommend this class. Outside research may lead you to be accused of cheating despite the poor lectures not being sufficent for learning.
He doesn't give clear instructions on assignments, especially the final essay. Takes off a lot of points for simple mistakes due to his unclear instructions.
Is very disrespectful towards student opinions, grades all of his assignments very opinionated. His class does not have mandatory attendance but participation is a part of your final grade. Tests never aligns with material, and he doesn't allow any late work. Is not descriptive at all when it comes to his grading rubric.
He doesn't give constructive feedback on your work, instead he mainly criticizes the faults. Really harsh grader which makes sense because he gives very general instructions to follow.
Prof. Brent does not know how to give proper feedback, he always says to ask him for help when we need it but when I asked him for help and had some questions about his lecture slides, he told me to search it up because he does not know, if you don't know what you are teaching, how would you expect me as a student to know the answer.
The lack of clear communication for James Brent. Delayed grading, and unprofessional behavior have negatively impacted my learning experience. Despite multiple attempts to address these issues, no improvements have been made. Do not take this man's class.
Does not know what he's doing. Does not have a clear grading system. He's "lectures" are 3-5 minutes YouTube video with AI robot VoiceOver. Unbearable. You will not learn a single thing from this class other than James Brent is not suitable to be a teacher. The mean for most assignments are lower than 50% for the whole class. Do not take his class.
So hard to understand what he wants from assignments. He is not clear about anything, and most of his lecture videos are just him rambling. Deff would not take him again(but I have to ugh) and he just loves accusing students of using AI. He's done it to me this sem and my friends from past classes, too!(We had proof)
Fairly insufferable, would rather blow my head off than do a days work of this class. Pick your classes wisely
Awful Professor, need to watch videos and take notes for exams. Absolutely no respect for students' time to arrange meetings or office hours and is often rude. Feedback is mostly based on his political views and he thinks that every good assignment is used by AI. Boasts about how much of the class he's reported. Please don't take this guy's class.
Hands down the worst professor I've had at sjsu.. He doesn't seem to realize that everyone that takes his class is just trying to fufill a useless GE class. The summer class I took was harder than my Upper division classes for my major. Gave me an incomplete even though I completed everything. Then doesn't admit to his mistake . F this guy
Extremely tough grader and flexes how many people he reports for AI usage. If you take this class be prepared to remain in a continuous state of anxiety. I didn't have the need to contact him outside of class however, he is extremely difficult to work with to schedule meetings and only seems to take his own schedule into account.
I wish I would've taken everyone's advice on here instead of enrolling in this man's class. I have been accused of using AI multiple times when I write my own assignments. he's requesting a zoom meeting with me because he has a question about one of my responses on an assignment. Absolutely ridiculous. Do not take him. Trust me.
literally the worst professor, accuses you of AI just because you have "good writing," he uses AI himself for lectures... doesn't even use an AI checker and just blindly accuses you of AI without giving any proof. way too much work for a GE
quite literally the worst teacher to exist. flexes about how many students he reports for using ai but he uses it himself for lectures... he also doesn't even give any proof. thinks every good assignment is made by ai. every assignment is anxiety inducing bc u dont know if hes gonna accuse u or not. exams are light work its open note
