Kind and helpful, really cute!
creepy
Class was entirely papers (no tests), good class discussions, not hard at all
Nice guy, pretty good teacher, not creepy at all
really cares, papers, no tests. must have been cute 20 years ago.
phenomenal teacher....one of the best i ever had......you will learn a lot
No Comments
best course and teacher I had. can be tough, but class was fun.
awesome teacher, fun class eventhough there is a lot of work
the best teacher i ever had, class discussions are awesome, all papers
Disc. are fun & interesting. Prof. Burns is extremely understanding & helpful.
Nice but weird guy. All papers but you can rewrite without penalty. Pretty easy
Great class-- no tests, just papers....can rewrite papers without a penalty.
very nice...class discussions are interesting...extremely helpful
only class ive gotten an A in...good stuff
A liberal jerk. Thinks he is holier than thou.
repetitive lectures, a lot of work...it sucks
only tough if youre afraid to work... uses his opinions to get you to think.
VERY OPINIONATED, but a fun class. All papers with unpenalized rewrites. overall a good class
Class discussions are interesting always. All papers but you get a second chance to rewrite them and bring up your grade. Overall a good class- Go to the writing center-he likes that and you will get a better grade on papers-
This was a good class, and he's a nice guy. Rewrites for papers means you can get a good grade. He'll listen to your ideas if you can back them up.

Great professor. Didn't even know he was just a grad student till the very end. Very open minded, honest and interesting person. He's strict about attendance but fair in grading paper, granting extensions etc. Take his classes!
Excellent teacher. Willing to help, and easy to get an A. Rewrites on all papers. Tough on attendence (go to class, don't be late) but class discussions are interesting.
A great class, lots of discussion. grades are all papers, with rewites. Tough on attendance.
Go to class!!! The only way you can get a bad grade if you don't do any work and never, I mean ever show up to class. You're also allowed to do rewrites without any penalty. Also go to the writing center, he will give you a better grade on your paper.
A lot of homework and reading. He grades pretty fairly, but he also lets you do rewrites with no penalty. His lectures were sometimes interesting.
Willing to do anything to help the students. Nice and very approachable. Lots of work and mandatory attendance but you have to be "special" to not do well if you do all the work
Best class I've had all semester! Jack Kerouac and the Beats were taught in an unforgettable way. He's very passionate, very fair and possibly the most thought provoking professor I've had all year. I made sure to never miss a class....
TAKE THIS WITH HIM. He is actually an interesting teacher and tries to pick topics that are also interesting. Very fair grader and allows rewrites on every paper. You have to write a lot of journals, but it's really not that bad. Great guy.
Goes through some mood swings and can be a difficult grader at times. you can re-do papers however, and is a true hippy or some era thats not ours. All in all I would recommend as I did learn a decent amount of material.
A really fair and easy grader. He is a good guy
I love this class! He is the best teacher Ive ever had in my whole life! He actually makes class interesting. The fact that hes a hippie makes it even better. Just do all the homework and come to class and you'll do well.
The only redeeming factor for his class is that you get to do rewrites for all the major assignments.
He is one of the best Engl 110 teachers. He's kind of a hippy but that doesn't matter cause he really does make class interesting. Not just when he talks but also in the assignments we do. Have a lot of reading journals to do (short) but can do them in 5 minutes. It's funny that he practically wears
I really dislike this man. Why couldn't I have had good ol' Ray Miller?
what's to not like? the class is interesting, he lets you do rewrites, and he's there if you need him. Oh, he does ask that you think.
Great teacher who will do anything to help his students. Allows students to rewrite once for each major assignment, which is very helpful.
this guy rocks! helpful and funny, take his classes. rewrites on major papers and interesting classes.
He's a really cool guy. The discussions in class are really interesting but come prepared because sometimes he randomly calls on people. Not a huge workload, reading journals, 2-3 major papers and then the research paper. He really likes what he teaches. It was an awesome class.
OMG! I worked my butt off in this class and only got a B. It's not that the class was hard, it's that I wasn't one of his favs. He is very unfair in that sense. His lectures were interesting but he was sometimes a bit crude. Overall, I wouldn't suggest this class unless you like to suck up to teachers.
sooo liberal, it's his way or no way. he lets you do rewrites but that's basically the only plus about him. he has his favorites and you better be one or not expect a good grade.
I had him awile back and it was great. Only complaints about "favs" were from kids who missed deadlines and got all whiney. He's strick with attendance and when stuff is due. Good discussions. Uses the email alot- so check. I'd take him again in a minute!
who cares if he's a liberal (the guy's some ex hippy). I learned to be a better writer. He has his opinions and wants you to be able to communicate yours. he never graded on my ideas, just on how good I wrote them. He's honest and very helpful, use his office hours and youll do good. fantastic teacher, one of the best!
This guy was the best prof ive had at UD. Very interesting class discussions, OK work load. He knows his stuff and wants to make students better writers. its not a hard A to get but youve got to do the work and meet the deadlines. Wish he taught more classes, made english fun.
great prof, smart and funny. i learned a lot about writing. you have to work at not getting a good grade. cares about all his students, just meet him halfway.
Burns is a very interesting professor who made The Politics of Science Fiction an enjoyable class. The lectures often make you think hard about opinions you haven't had challenged before and he will respect any opinion that you can defend well. While his grading is fair, this class is not an easy A and there is more writing than in most other e110.
One of the best teachers I've ever had. Easily best at Uof D. He Makes the class very interesting with class discussions and he is very passionate about what he teaches. Take any class he teaches
Mr. Burns is without a doubt the coolest teacher I have EVER had. He makes ENGL110 a blast and I actually looked forward to going to class every day. This guy knows what he's talking about, and grades very fairly. He also allows you to do re-writes on any major paper. TAKE BURNS for English 110, he was my favorite professor ever!
Mr. Burns is a really cool guy, and his grading system is very fair. The honors section for E110 was definitely a lot of work, but in the end it was worthwhile. The journals got tedious, but he graded them fairly easily as long as you put forth effort. I would definitely recommend his class. He is really passionate about the subjects he teachers.
Well, Professor Burns is a great professor. He has a passion for what he teaches, and that's always a good thing. Many interesting discussions, likes to get everyone involved. Fair grader; make sure you do put in some effort in your writings. I'd take him again.
Great guy. Very interesting and entertaining class. All readings were short (aprox 5-10 min) and interesting. Class time consisted of a discussion and that is all. Awesome class!!
Take Burns for english!! The class is excellent and he is sure one heck of an interesting guy. My favorite professor so far here at Delaware. Class isn't too difficult, but there are a lot of writing assignments - make sure to put enough effort into reading journals and papers to get a good grade. Also, don't buy the bedford handbook,it's expensive
This man is amazing as a teacher. I've taken a class with him every semester so far but sadly there are none left for me to take. If he ever teaches a new course I would take it though, no doubt.
Ok, so Professor Burns can come off a little harsh sometimes but he really is a great guy and an awesome teacher. He lays out all of his expectations and pretty much lets you know everything you need to do in order to do well in his class. He likes students that participate in class discussions too. You will do well in this class. Recommended.
I had him first semester freshman year for honors E110, and it's easily the best class I've had. Really interesting guy, knows what he's talking about, and is genuinely interested in what he's teaching. Go to class, they're usually really interesting and the discussion is great. Rewrites of major assignments without penalty is a definite plus.
Burns <3. He is extremely undertsanding and helpful. Don't be afraid to go to his office hours if your having trouble writing your essay. He really want's you to do well and lets you rewrite all the major papers. It's hard not to get an A. LOVE that he says never let anyone tell you ignorance is a bad thing because it lets you grow and learn.
LOVE him. He's such an interesting professor and his classes are interesting as well. He's a well-educated man and makes the class something to look forward to. He's always there if you need help and I recommend all of my friends to take a class with him. Awesome!
Horrible teacher, doesnt feel like helping you, very blunt and boring in class, talks about random things, homework is easy though, doesnt seem to care about class.
Awesome professor! You can rewrite every major paper. He wants you to actually get better at writing. Interesting lectures (usually) if you even have lectures. Lots of class off to write etc. Helpful through conferences. Can be intimidating in class by being very blunt but is actually a nice guy.
Burns is a great professor overall. He lets your re-write every single paper so it's pretty much impossible not to do well in his class! I would definitely recommend taking a class with him.
Burns is awesome. He is really interesting and interested in how you write and wants everyone to get better. His grading is not hard because he lets you rewrite all your major papers. He's a great professor and is clear about grading. You have to do work, but it's not really hard to get a good grade.
Jim Burns is FANTASTIC! There are not enough good things I could say about this man. I hated english in high school...HATED,but took ENGL110 with him and it is my absolute favorite class. He makes everything interesting, and it is discussion, not just him lecturing for 50 minutes. He said "I want all my students to get an A." Great, great, man.
i learned more in this class than i have in 4 yrs of being at this school... never a dull moment and really makes you think. other teachers could really learn a lot from this guy...its a shame theres not more like him. his class is so incredibly worthwhile.
Politics of Science Fiction honors section. One of my favorite professors. He lets you re-write all major papers, and if you put any effort into them, you will get full credit. Lots of "little" papers, but they are just to get you to write. He wants his students to really learn about how to write well. Fun class, REALLY fun topic. I enjoyed it
He gives a lot of work, but it's worth it. Professor Burns is one of the most inspirational human beings I've ever met. I learned so much from being in his class, and he really made all of us think. He genuinely cares about his students, and his lectures are always interesting. Once he brought in a sword and used it in discussion haha.
Overall classes with Burns were enjoyable. He seemed a little self righteous at times, but most professors are. He used funny examples to illustrate his points and was easy to talk to.
One of the funniest and most sarcastic proffessors I have had so far. He makes you write a lot but its worth it because he makes you a better writer. Definatley recommend him!
He assigns a lot of writing but his classes are great and he is a pretty funny dude
He gives 2 papers a week. He does not understand we have other classes. His grading is based sole on how liberal your material is. The more liberal the higher the grade. He meditates on occasion which is cool i guess. He gives you something to think about but is a bit to radical. He will talk a lot about his days working in boston..
lots of LITTLE papers, but it helps you write good. Rewrites on major papers. In our class ONLY graded on how good the argument was, never on liberal or consrvative. work with him and youl go good.
This guy rocks! Best English teacher ever. (and i'm conservative).
One of the worst professors I have ever had! He's rude when you ask him a question either in person or email. He expects you to know what he's talking about. He uses vulgar language often and is very unprofessional. His coursework is more than most teachers! Avoid if you can!
I say take him! Helpful and nice if you leave your attitude at home. Best English teacher at UD.
Took the honors section of this course called "The Cultural Impact of the Superhero". OMG this class was the best!!! Professor Burns keeps it real with his students and will not BS with you. He doesn't want to waste your time or his, so class is cancelled often. His class is very writing intensive, but the papers are enjoyable. Definitely take him!
Jim Burns is the man. Funny, engaging, and very fair, he wants you to succeed and become a better writer, and he is very good at helping his students realize this. Great E110 professor!
Burns is the man. He honestly wants you to do well and become a better writer. He lets you rewrite because you should learn from your mistakes. His class was really interesting, and he knows what he's taking about. He is a hilarious man and I have so much respect for him. Do yourself a favor and take his class.
This class was sort of boring, but incredibly easy. It was pretty much impossible to get any grade lower than an A. All you have to do is show up, and complete the assignments. He grades everything pretty easy, and allows you to rewrite any/all of the major papers.
Overall a pretty good teacher. Is always available during office hours and responds to emails rather quickly. His class is very interesting and brings up a lot of engaging topics. I suggest him as a professor, but DO NOT take him during winter if you expect his class to be easier. He has the same syllabus in winter as he does in the fall & spring!
He brings up interesting topics and he allows rewrites of papers, which is very helpful. However, he assigns a LOT of papers. He also doesn't teach much in the ways of English in my experience. I know a lot of people in my class struggled and a decent amount of students failed, but if you put effort in you'll be fine.
I took this over the winter so there was always a paper due everyday. It's an english class so it's pretty straight forward. The only thing that held me back was my grammar, but a trip to the writing center fixed that. Other than that, it wasn't that bad of a class. Professor Burns is funny and his debates make the class engaging.
At first I was very intimated by professor Burns & he came off as kind of rude. I almost considered dropping the class & taking another professor but I am certainly glad I didn't. He is a very smart guy & his class discussions are very interesting. It is a lot of writing, but if you put in the time and the effort you should get a decent grade.
Professor Burns may come off a bit strict on the first couple of days when he is laying out his expectations for his class, but, ultimately, he is a great professor. I had so much fun in his class and his ideas are easy to follow and spark your own imagination.
Professor Burns is an amazing english professor. Comes off pretty strict in the beginning of the year, but ultimately just wants the best for his students and that requires hard work. Lets you redo any of the 4 big papers, and is super helpful and always available during office hours. Had him for honors, but would recommend for any. Great guy!!
Great professor. He comes off a little rude in the beginning but he really just wants the best for everyone. He is always available during office hours and is always willing to help and answers questions. There are about 4-5 major papers and the chance to do rewrites is always given. If you try your best getting an A is 100% possible.
Burns comes off as rude and strict but he means well and cares for his students. We had to write a lot of papers but, he lets you rewrite 4 of the major papers and the in-class discussions were interesting. He's very funny and sarcastic.
Great guy.
Always do the assigned reading! He seems intimidating at first, but he is actually really nice and always will answer your questions even it is not about English. He also gives good advice and his lectures are really engaging and help you look at things in a new way.
If youre major isnt associated with literature, do not take this class. Burns is pretty tough but you learn a lot from him. He will definitely teach you all the skills you need for writing. He assigns papers every week but does rewrites for big papers which is nice.
Wonderful class. We had good class discussions and while this class does indeed require some work and effort, if you do the work and effort you defiantly get rewarded. Do not let the first few days make you switch because you will feel a little intimidated, however, this is one of the few people here who just wants you to learn and succeed.
Theres a lot of papers but it is an English class. If you actually want to learn then take this course, but if you just want to pass then dont. Hes pretty clear on what he expects on papers. Burns also allowed rewrites on four of the major papers which helped. Class discussions were interesting and funny
He gives a lot of papers in his English class. Gives a clear explanation of what he expected on his papers after they are turned in. All about his students becoming "professional writers." He allows rewrites on his big papers. He isn't always understanding though so make sure you are on track with every assignment, each one counts. Tough grader!!
He's a very tough grader but overall great guy. He's pretty funny and is interactive with the class. Just make sure when you're writing your papers that you know what's expected and what he's looking for. Not my easiest english class but he definitely helps in the long run
a nice man but a horrible professor. for a gen ed requirement his class was more difficult than any class i had to take for my actual major. he refuses to explain his annotations and claims 'he should not have to teach you how to write the way he wants', the selling point of this class is theres no exams but the workload is worse than taking exams
Don't take this course if you don't like to write. Weekly writing assignments on random things. Every 2-3 weeks there is a research paper. Final paper is a tough time as well. He allows rewrites on the research papers but it is still a lot of work. He is a nice guy and even asked us how to improve his class. He is chill but the work is hard.
This professor is extremely hard and will kick your butt in terms of assignments and grading. There are 8 "response" papers and four major papers, which become increasingly harder as you go on. Be prepared to write ALOT. I also learned A TON from this course, excellent for writing development. Would recommend if you're up for the work, be prepared
The class very inspiring and engaging and more like a conversation when in class. A paper due every week, sometimes two. Much more work than all other Engl110 teachers, so if just taking for credit, avoid. If you don't mind writing a lot, take this class because the in class discussions are worth it and you'll actually want to go to class.
Short lectures
Finished with a good grade in his class, but the course work is unbelievably overwhelming considering it is a school required class. A writing due every week ranging from 2.5pgs-5pgs. He won't fail you if he sees youre trying. Very opinionated and need to write papers that he would agree with. Would not take this course again
bestie burns is a really cool guy, loved his lectures and classes those were all very interesting. we had one to two papers due every week which kind of sucked in the beginning but overall he definitely made me a better writer.
Professor Burns is a great professor. Be prepared to do a lot of work, as he gives responses each week. There are 9 in total and only 8 must be completed. Professor Burns also gives a total of 5 papers that must be completed. There are no exams, which is made up for by the amount of work. Classtime is easy and usually ends early.
His lectures are super interesting and he gives the opportunity for everyone to engage and share their opinion on topics based on the reading responses, such as livable wages, the education system, and morality. There are a lot of writing assignments, but you can rewrite 4 major assignments for full credit.
I have written 12 papers for this professor. Four being long reports, up to 10 pages long. Do not take him if you want to be happy. He is old and needs to retire.
He's a great teacher that will push you to do your best. My writing skills have improved significantly over the course of the semester. He can be a little picky sometimes when grading but not too bad. His lectures are deep and engaging. There is no easy A in his class but if you want to make the most of your tuition dollars then take him.
Class was fine and my writing skills improved a bit, but this prof is extremely unpleasant to be around and is in general very condescending. No regard for extenuating circumstances and does not offer helpful feedback. Avoid if possible
Loved my class with Professor Burns. He is very intimidating at the beginning of the course and that threw me off a bit but don't let that fool you. He is an amazing writer and he will push you to be better as well. He truly cares for his students and wants them to be great writers. His course has helped me tremendously since I took it.
He gives A LOT of papers, like one or two a week. A lot of them are on random topics and readings. He grades heavily but allows you to rewrite them. Honestly felt like a waste of time and made class way more serious than it was. Not great with Canvas either. Take his course if you're a good writer and want to improve, but it was so difficult:(((
Literally his lectures are random, his papers are a waste of time, and he is extremely unfair. If you can avoid him do it. I love English and hate him. ENGL110 should not be this difficult.
such a difficult class, do not recommend. didnt recieve a single A on any paper the first time around, he lets you rewrite papers but still shouldnt recieve that low of grades the first time around. he is a cool guy ig tho
A great professor, his lectures were super random and he would always let the class out early. TONS of papers.. 1 reading response due a week (8 total reading responses) and in addition there are 5 major papers that are a good percentage of your grade (overall total of papers written = 13). He lets you rewrite papers which is helpful in the end.
Many writing assignments but all were returned fast and with good feedback. Each major essay had an opportunity for a full rewrite. There was a noticeable amount of improvement in my writing over the course of this class. Burns is an insightful man who brings up good points in class, but I felt like I already knew much of what he was talking about
I had to reschedule an important doctor's appointment because he was going to fail me if I did not attend the Banned Books Readout (a university-held event), which was scheduled outside of class hours. He is very bad at respecting DSS accommodations, so I would not recommend him to my fellow disabled people. Be prepared to write often.
