Awesome teacher! Funny as hell.
Excellent professor! He has a great sense of humor too, which is a plus!
Good book, interesting lectures, good sense of humor
excellent prof - tests aren't too hard because he is very thorough in his teaching. Don't miss a class tho, you'll miss a lot.

he sucks. The class is extremely boring as along with the fact that you have to hear his ridiculous jokes. I don't reccommend at all.
I took him twice my sophomore year. You need to go to class. Don't pay attention to his study guide, just make sense of your notes. Be able to know them and resite them. His tests aren't bad but always re-read the question.
Take this class! If you go to class, take notes, and work on the entire study sheet you will do well on the tests. He tells many somewhat bad jokes, but he does have some funny ones. He is very helpful and will answer any questions you have after class.

He's very cheesy, but funny. Very helpful. I'd recommend him to anyone. Keep up on the readings, and PAY ATTENTION TO THE STUDY GUIDES. Most of the questions on the tests/final are on those sheets.
though he seems nice and funny, he is an evil test giver and an inflexible grader. if you learn best from reading the text and not listening to lectures, this class is NOT for you. make sure you write every fact he says down. your grade depends on it.
This professor ROCKS. The best professor at Loyola. Don't miss this class. You will love it. He has a great sense of humor that makes things easy to remember and the tests are all multiple choice. Don't miss class! but you won't want to anyway.
Fun teacher, relaxed atmosphere, and a great overall instructor.
this guy seems really nice and entertaining..and seems to present the lecture very clearly...i studied my ass off for the first test and gave answers/examples word for word from his lecture and got a C (with the curve!!!!) DROP IT!!!!!
What a great professor. He is one of the best professors I have ever had here at Loyola.
he made a class with over 120 in it interesting, which isn't easy
This guy is an awesome teacher but his test are a B****, good luck with him u'll learn a lot but u still might fail-go monkeys-u'll get the joke later
Class is emensely interesting even though it's lecture all the time. Get notes and tests from someone else who took the class and you can get an A (with studying) and enjoy class. He's a good guy and challenges you to get what you're paying for.
you have to go to every class with this guy. in class notes are more important than reading the book. info is interesting, sometimes a little boring. tests are really hard. he's trying to get you to use the info he gave u and really think about it.
Great professor- VERY smart and clear- the subject material is overwhelming, so be able to memorize and sort info. He will do what he can to make it easier on you. Tests SUCK-he's awesome!
HORRIBLE HORRIBLE CLASS! I had to drop it because the lectures were SO boring and the tests were impossible, even how hard you studied. Do not take this class!
Amazing teacher, assuming you can get interested. Likes to make fun jokes, my notes are lined by random quotes from the man. Brilliant guy, challenging material, intelligently structured class. HARD! notes = key, study or die.
WORST TEACHER EVER!
Starts out as an easy class, but after the first test you learn it's hard. All grades are from the tests, and the lectures are BORING. i know WAY too many people who dropped the class b/c they failed 2 tests and it was impossible for them to pass.
WORST CLASS EVER! YOU'D THINK ANTH 101 WOULD BE AN EASY AND COOL CLASS..HEY HUMAN ORIGINS ALRIGHT! BUT IT SUCKS SO MUCH, THE LECTURES ARE BORING, THE READINGS ARE BORING, THE EXAMS ARE DIFFICULT DESPITE THEM BEING MULTIPLE CHOICE, DROP WHILE YOU CAN!
though i did not drop..loads of kids did, and i was kinda wishing i had done the same..the class sucks, the material blows...and the professor HA! okay he makes jokes but come on how does that help me when i can't stay awake reading the material?! DRO
Material is easy to understand - but somehow the tests are incredibly difficult, and the only grades are on the test. I studied so hard for this class yet never made above a C on any test. Should have dropped it.
He is very helpful and gives you great notes for his tests!
WARNING WARNING HORRIBLE PROFESSOR! His lectures are REALLY BORING and his tests are EXTREMELY HARD! He is not open to questions or comments...TAKE SOMEONE ELSE! YOU WILL REGRET TAKING HIM!
Amazingly bad. My pillow needed a pillow.
I can't believe the comments below! Calcagno is wonderful; you couldn't ask for a more clear and approachable professor. He teaches you without putting you to sleep (a great quality) and if you complete the study aids (LONG) you can get an A on all tests!
Funny & interesting lectures! Recommend only if you are willing to work for an A.I've taken 3 of his classes.I cant believe the losers below. You're the lazy people in class talking while I'm trying 2 learn.Shut up! Was helpful but wont do the work for U.
He's ok. The class is interesting to go to but he wants you to apply your knowledge on the tests-- but believe me, it's not what you would expect. I'm definitly a B+/A student struggling to get a B in this class.
I liked his class. He was very funny and gave a good lecture. The quizzes and tests were easy, so long as you study.
Exams can be very challanging. Quizzes are a breeze if you read the books, which are not textbooks, but scholarly works that you could find at a non-Uni. bookstore. Overall, class lectures were very interesting and he likes class participation-ask Q's!
Dr. Calcagno was fascinating and hilarious. His lectures are interesting and informative, and tests are what is to be expected in a science course. Yes, you have to APPLY knowledge. Duh. Changed the way I thought about primates. I looked forward to class.
Calcagno is a great teacher, you would seriously need to try really hard to not get a good grade in his class. Yes, it might be slightly challenging your you anti-science people, but it is a million times easier than any other science class @ luc.
Great teacher, funny, and helpful if you ask he can't read your mind you know. It's biological anthropology, so expect science in the class and applying your knowledge.
If he taught a class that would help me complete my "theme" or "groups", I WOULD TAKE IT! This professor made me love learning about DNA (and I took AP Biology and hated it)! He is so funny, so sincere, so amazing: you WILL look forwar
horrible class.
He was fantastic. He is the first man who ever explained Science in a way I could understand. He opened my eyes to a whole new world and I am in his debt.
long lectures long notes everyday curves test and gives you study guide pretty cool
long lectures, important to attend class, lots of notes, gives a study guide that says exactly whats on the test, easy class if you pay attention to lectures and review before the test. a nice guy too, funny and helpful
Just took the class because I had to, but I liked it. Yes, lots of notes and you have to study, but very clear and helpful guy. Very nice.

veru good professor, very knowledgeable, great sense of humor. If you have all the notes from the powerpoints and answer all the questions from the study you will get an A. I don't understand why people complain so much, this class is a breeze.
Show up to class, take notes, answer study guide. Come on guys it's college and for a college course he's pretty generous.
easy class. he tells you exactly what to do to get a good grade: go to lectures, take notes, go over study guide before test - couldn't be easier. don't even have to read the textbook. just take notes, which even a monkey could do. The guy is funny and nice and usually doesn't bore you.
His study guides are horrible and he gives the hardest multiple choice test that I have ever taken! Dont take him, I hate Anthropolgy now! He cruves grades so that everyone gets a C!!
big lecture class with lots of notes. attendance every day. 3 tests and a final. helpful, nice guy. gives difficult multiple choice tests because they are geared toward applying rather than memorization, but they are curved. interesting lectures. he really tries not to bore students.
I loved this class, great teacher, very clear and precise..TAKE THIS CLASS you will love it
He gives very interesting and straight-forward lectures, but his tests are VERY hard multiple choice because you have to warp your knowledge from class to answer his new questions. Your grade comprises of 4 test grades, where most of the grades are curved to be C's. The tests ruin it for me.
Calcagno can be kind of passive aggressive when his students aren't doing as well as he would like, but other than that I have no complaints. Very interesting class, good lectures, and a good sense of humor.
This class is very interesting.Hard part was the fact it was WI.Lectures tend to be vague.Tests are very hard and projects are very involved.I wouldn't recommend this class unless you reallllllly like primates.
why is he teaching? big auditorium all he does is give notes from power point. if u like to copy notes for about an hour take u will have a blast, but if u dont do not take him he wil bore u to death. besides he takes attendance even for a class for two hundred students. who does that?
The books you read and study from are seriously hard!
Very interesting subject matter, but I had some trouble with being tested on a few things not discussed in class at all. Took me by surprise when I saw the tests.
Great guy, tough class, impossibly tests.
Such an interesting class!! You MUST ATTEND EVERY LECTURE. As long as you go to every class, pay attention and take notes you will be fine. The problem is only half the class actually shows up. There are 20 points of E.C. available to help your grade too!!
Super amazing class. A book I had been wanting to read, Nature Via Nurture, ended up being the book we had to read the class. Material is super interesting -- but helps if you have some biology background. Some people think the tests are hard, but i made the highest grade in the class!
Very boring, take the quizzes seriously because they give you extra credit at the end of the semester. Annoying to have to listen to for an entire class period and horrendously boring. Don't take him unless you enjoy being thoroughly bored.
One of the best classes at Loyola; you actually learn something. Not an easy A, but certainly worth your tuition money. Dr. Calcagno is very excited and serious about the matertial and expects the same attitude form his students. 10 quizes (2 ec), 2 mc tests, final is cum. Highly recommend it.
i have no interest in this subj, but he made it interesting. funny guy, i love the jokes he throws into lectures. attendance important. gives study guides for multiple choice tests, but tests are still a bit tricky, but i learned so much in this class it was worth it.
BRING TOOTHPICKS TO KEEP EYES OPEN!!! BORING!! You can tell he's a nice guy he just sucks as a teacher. Take quizzes SERIOUSLY! His TESTS are Tricky so quizzes save you. Also, turn off phone before class he gets OVERLY annoyed by them and BE ONTIME! He hates when people walk in late!!
He is a super nice guy. The tests are very hard, but he gives a lot of quizzes that count as extra credit which are a lot of help. He knows the material and is passionate about the field. The class is kind of boring, but he tries to make it fun. He is a good professor!
He is a really nice guy, and he does try to make his class interesting, but it gets pretty boring. The tests are fine, just study lecture notes, and if you are there on thursdays for all 10 quizzes (you only need 8)2 will count as extra credit.
He is so sweet! just like a little boy! class can get boring but thats only because I'm not so into monkeys etc and the tests are rather hard, but overall good class, good teacher. go for it!
class is stupid and hard. calcagno is very unhelpful. when i would email him or anything, he wouldn't even reply. i didn't enjoy the class. it was a waste of time.
I hated him. He knows his stuff but is boring and cocky. Memorize everything he ever said for the tests. I was one of his advisees and he didn't even know my name.
Don't listen to ppl who talkin bad about him. Good teacher with great attitude! Tests are hard but do take notes and review them constantly and you'll do fine. 40% of times, classes are boring but still he makes the audience laugh. I got C+ in 101 and B in 103 cause hard tests!!
This is a pretty boring class with a lot of notes. However, the class is pretty easy if you go and do the readings. There are many quizzes, one every week, and two tests (mid/final). He doesn't try to trick you, and overall not a bad class.
Prof.C is awsome! ok so i was into anthro before taking the class, but it wasn't boring, i had a good time. Explains the material well. if u take good notes, pay attention, read, & ask questions after class, u'll be fine. Makes the primate section especially interesting w/ gorilla chest-beating impressions & later for the hominid sect. w/ impressio
this class was incredibly boring. TONS of notes. he's not a bad guy- tried to make jokes, but they really weren't funny. seemed a bit cocky, as someone else said... took attendance for a 150+ class size! but you can always have someone sign you in. tests were hard, make sure you know and understand EVERYTHING. overall, he sucks and its BORING.
Calcagno is one of the most boring professors that I have ever had. His class consists of lectures and then a test. Only take this class if you are having trouble sleeping, I think I fell asleep through almost every lecture he gave. I do not recomend this class, well I take that back, I don't recomend the teacher!
Save yourself the frustration and don't take him. Boring, tricky tests, dosen't know who you are in his auditorium classes
OMG, don't take it if its your first class of the day, and don't take it if you'er used to being up all hours of the night, or if you fall asleep really easily. Lectures drone on and on; he never changed the background on his power point; If you take this class, you must listen, take EXCELLENT notes, read the text, and stay awake. Good luck w/that
i took him for 101 and got a C, but decided to take him again for 103. He nice, and practically everything on the test is from notes. He gives you all the info, and you just have to memorize it. however, there are A LOT of notes. Attendence has nothing to do with your grade. BUT if you miss 1 day of notes, you're a little screwed as it is.
Dr. Calcagno is by no means easy, but is that what you want out of a professor? You learn a ton in his class, and he is one of the most understanding and helpful profs at Loyola. Do not take him if you just care about easy As, but if you want to learn, there's no one better.
He's a nice guy, but no....just, no! This class was EXTREMELY difficult, and I usually get A's in the majority of my classes. Find another class to fulfill the science core.
This guy is an amazing prof! More than willing to talk and explain things out if you don't follow. You will learn a lot in this class, if you want to. IT IS NOT A DIFFICULT CLASS IF YOU STUDY AND KEEP UP! I got an easy A. He gives you extra points on the exams if you take all his quizzes. Seriously, awesome class and teacher!
tough class but stick with it. read for his quizzes and study hard for tests, and an A is possible. class drags, especially on TuTh, but he adds very interesting perspective to the subject.
I LOVE Dr. Calcagno! He's a great teacher and although Tuesday and Thursday classes seem to drag on, he always makes everything very interesting. He's a very intelligent guy, and he's really funny...although a little corny. I would definitely take one of his classes again!
Great guy, but he class was pretty hard, just gotta stick with it and definitely do the readings for the quizzes, they're only hard if you don't read. He's tests are worded very oddly which makes them pretty hard. Class is somewhat of a drag, but still fairly interesting.
calcagno is awesome, he is very funny! the class is interesting but the tests are definately challenging.. primate observation projects are fun! his interest in the subject shows and wears off on you.. i would definately take him again..
Best prof! Easy, easy A. You would have to be a complete idiot to not get an A in his 101. If you go to class and pay attention at all you'll do great! His jokes are really cheesy, but that's what makes him so funny. You can not love this guy!
HARD!
Ok, I'm sorry but this prof is not only boring as ever, but he is EXTREMELY difficult! The class averages reflect this and he only gives 3 exams and a final. I found this 101 course to be on the level of graduate school! DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE!
He's a funny guy. He is straightforward about what he expects on everything. Really pay attention to his notes and memorize them (also be able to make sense of them). Read "Our Inner Ape", it isn't as dry as it would seem. Follow all the directions for the 2 field projects and for film commentaries and you will be fine.
Horrible class. His grading scale is nice, but that's because it has to be. He is all about getting the idea and understanding concepts, but his test are mutiple choice. It is near to impossible to be conceptual with multiple choice. AVOID THIS CLASS.
As long as you have a functioning brain, and a sense of humor, this is deff. one of the less painful "Core classes"-yes, you have to study a bit, but most of it should have been learned in highschool.
He is an awesome person w/ a sense of humor making the class really great. Having a tues/thurs class w/ him can be long, but he is very very knowledgable about what he teaches (If you look in the book credits at the end, his name is listed for something he has written as further reading material!) Overall, he is a great guy and really cares about u
go to class and study hard and youll be fine. he gives study guides
I liked this class. You have to go to class b/c he takes attendance. He is very helpful if you attend class and still have problems. Do the study guides the day you get them! Review for the final test by studing the old tests. Class was large, but he tries really hard to make it managable. Write down his powerpoints in a notebook.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS....test are extremely hard and you have to know EVERYTHING....overall i felt like i didnt learn anything about human orgins....NO MATTER WHAT STAY FAR FAR AWAY!!
i can see where people think he's too tough. but really, he just makes you work. it's not an easy a. it's not an easy b either. tests are tough and cover a lot of material. go to class! all the test questions from his lectures. looking back on it, i worked my butt off, but it was worth it. it's a good class and he knows his stuff
I worked my butt off for an A, complete with window markers to draw the evolutionary tree as review with my friends in the class. You have to go to class, but its just powerpoints so you can copy them down and not really pay attention. Go to class, prepare well for tests, and you're golden.
it isn't the easiest class ever. You have to work for your grade but he's a great prof and makes material interesting. He's underrated and fair in his grading and teaching and actually CARES about your learning. go to class, take notes, read the book, study for the tests from the study guide [aka be a good student] and you will rock it. he's great.
Calcagno's class is tough unless you do the work. Tests are hard but the class structure/grading is pretty fair. Quizes are every week but it helps alot. He uses the lowest quiz scores as extra credit. Go to class because if you dont you miss alot. Hes an intelligent man and wants his students to do well.
Exams are based on PowerPoint notes but cover some examples (making up 2-3 questions out of 50) that you have to be in class to understand. Because the tests are tricky (remember,5 is the most you can get to get an A on a given exam), you can't risk getting these questions wrong. Go to class- lectures are interesting. I ended up with a high A.
I took him for two classes because he was great. After his classes, I decided to be an Anthropology major, so take him!
His lectures (from powerpoints) aren't incredibly interesting, but if you go to class and take good notes, you should be able to pass. A's aren't easy, his tests are a bit tricky but the class isn't impossible. Take his advice and keep up with notes/reading and DON'T CRAM!!! Studying for tests ahead of time will do wonders for your sanity
Calcagno is a nice guy who wants you to do well. but classes drag on and make you want to fall asleep.boring Power Points, 4 MC tests, but they are about understand concepts. gives helpful study guide, but its really hard to get an A. easy B though (assuming you spend about an hour going over the studyguide and your notes the night before the test)
He is a really kind and helpful man who loves his field of work. That said, he has a tendency to rattle off everything that's in the Power Point in a tone that sounds like a lullaby to your brain. If you manage to stay awake enough to take good notes and put in the time and effort for the tests, you should be fine. Maybe an easy B, not so easy A.
The lectures are powerpoint-based. For the most part, the tests are based on the powerpoints. He gives a study guide, but don't be fooled! The tests are not easy. If you are willing to put the effort in, an A is possible. Otherwise, you will not get higher than a B.
As long as you attend class EVERYDAY, keep up with the readings, and begin studying off of the study guide well ahead of time, you will be fine. The material is very interesting and Dr. Calcagno explains it well. Take him if you can!
The material is very interesting and Dr. Calcagno explains it well. The class averages for the tests hovered around a C-. As long as you attend class EVERYDAY, take detailed notes, keep up with the readings, and begin studying off of the study guides well in advance, you will be fine.
This class is so easy. All you have to do is go to class everyday and copy all the notes down. Then you have to make sure you do the study guides and memorize them. Got a really high A. The tests are the notes.
His exams are really hard... even if you study for days! His lectures are long and winded. He is a super nice guy, but he is a tough grader and very anal retentive!
I really enjoy professor Calcagno's lectures. He always has interesting material and he's a great story teller too. The exams are very hard, but the other short papers and projects were easier. You can tell he really enjoys teaching and really wants people to care about what he's teaching too. It's nice to see that. A class worth taking.
Dropped his class... hard tests. Tests aren't on powerpoints, they're on lectures. THe powerpoints only help a little, and he doesn't put them on blackboard. Quizzes every week on readings...
Dr. Calcagno is extremely enthusiastic about the course, even though it's not one of the easiest. Weekly quizzes over reading. Going to class every day is a must. Exams aren't too hard, but you need to take good notes over powerpoints and add in "interesting" info he tells you in class. Gives study guides for exams. Very concept driven class.
Attendence is mandatory, there is a sign in sheet passed around. The book did not relate to anything that was discussed in class nor did Dr. Calcagno hardly mention any ideas the book had. Extremely hard tests but he gave you a study guide. If you study atleast a week in advance for the exams then you will be fine. Seems kind of stuck on himself.
Dr. Calcagno was a pretty good professor. He was a generally nice man and tried to make good jokes in class. His tests are awful. You need to show up to every lecture. Quizzes are really the only thing that help you. Studied really hard and got B. However, on final he did put 20 hardest questions from first two tests exactly as is, very nice.
Impressive. Take as many classes with Calcagno as you can!
Very good professor. Lectures were really interesting (atleast for me because im a biological anthro major) nonetheless very nice and approachable prof. need to read the book assigned because he will assign weekly quizzes. and study hard for the exams! They are very challenging.
Strange guy. Tries to make jokes in class. Weekly quizzes are extremely easy. Tests are all multiple choice and pretty tricky. Class is boring most of the time. I don't plan on taking anymore of his classes.
Dr. Calcagno is the most kind and amazing professor ever. He really cares about his students and will be more than willing to help you with anything. If you go to class, you should do fine.
Dr. Calcagno seems to care a lot about his teaching. I was always impressed by how organized he was in his lectures. His class is the prototypical college course. He's bomb.
Great professor. Very passionate about what he is teaching, and very experienced in his field. I would definitely recommend taking a class with Calcagno.
Very good college professor. Extremely organized and easy to follow in lectures. small work load-no hw, 3 exams a year, which require about 2 nights before of studying which adds up to about 6 nights in the semester of actual work. While class isn't really mandatory, success depends on attendance since your notes will be most helpful. good class
So Calcagno is extremely helpful even in a class of 200 people. Take notes and spend about 5 hours studying the night before each exam, and spend an all nighter on the final, and you'll get at least a B.
His class is tough and you have to study for the tests, but it's totally worth it in the end. You will learn a lot with him. I had this class in a lecture hall, but he tried to teach it like a normal class. I had no intrest in Anthropology before, but his class sparked my intrest.
Go to every lecture - the lecture material's pretty much all you need. Don't just copy what's on the slides - write down his explanation etc. too. I would strongly recommend start studying at least 4 days before an exam. He uploads a study at least a week in advance. Answer every question in the study guide!
Dr. Calcagno was nice enough he just didn't dumb things down. You have to know the reading material prior to the lecture to stay on top of things. The study guides he gives are difficult but know them, don't just fill them out. They cover everything you need to know but he doesn't test on memorization- his tests were difficult.
AWESOME MAN!! He is the sweetest man you will ever meet. He tries to make jokes in class to give you a break from all the seriousness of his lecture. He is incredibly knowledgeable and he is clear on what he expects out of you. If you go to class, take good notes, and prepare for the exams, you will be fine. Definitely recommended!!
He will hand your butt to you especially if you have no interest in science. He grades on a curve and memorizing stuff for his class is useless! If you understand the concepts you'll do fine, otherwise, if you're an "A" student everywhere else and not good with science, don't expect anything higher than a C+ for his class. Tough but worth it.
Dr. C is a stud. He is really funny and when you first see him you might be suprised to hear that. He likes your attention and his exams for this class are on the notes only. Show up to class and its pretty easy.
Calcagno is great. I had no interest in the class prior to taking it but he completely changed my mind. He knows his stuff and makes it interesting to learn about. Test questions are all from notes/lectures and the quizzes over the readings aren't very difficult if you at least skim the book. I would highly recommend him!
Professor Calcagano is clear in his lectures and makes the topics very interesting. The exams are all note based so its pivotal to go to class. Weekly quizzes on reading and those are boring. Overall, pretty easy class. I studied only the night before the exams, and read the weekly readngs an hour before the quiz and got a A.
Dr. Calcagno is a fantastic teacher. I have always gotten average grades in science classes, but you really do not need any background knowledge in science to succeed in his class; I got an A. Three exams and ten quizes for the entire semester. Exams are solely based off notes so attendance is mandatory. I would recommend this class to anyone.
He is really funny and really nice. 10 quizzes and 3 exams YOU HAVE TO READ THE BOOK TO DO WELL ON THE QUIZZES.
Great teacher. Makes class interesting and relevant. Fun lecturer.Saw him at an Arcade Fire concert. Totally awesome teacher.
I love this class! Its a huge lecture class but Calcagno is really entertaining (makes some cheesy jokes sometimes... ha)and makes the material interesting. If you go to class and take notes you can EASILY get an A. If you skip class, like even one or two its tough. He really wants students to do well but he demands respect
Dr. Calcagno is an awesome professor. He is a little intimidating, but a very nice and helpful guy. He provides very organised powerpoint slides for note taking during class. The tests are dominantly multiple choice, but the questions are difficult. I have taken him twice, and would recommend him to anyone interested in anthropology.
He's a good teacher. Notes come right off a powerpoint, but tests are very difficult. You really need to know your stuff. Grades on a curve, so it's fairly easy to get an A. There are also weekly quizzes based on readings, which is a bit annoying. Quizzes are from readings and exams are from lecture notes.
I honestly don't understand why ppl are saying he's difficult. class is so interesting and he's an incredibly nice guy. im not studying anth but this is one of the best classes i have ever taken here. go to class everyday and take diligent notes and there is no reason for you to not get at least a B. LOVE HIM
Great class. I'm not a science person but I really enjoyed this class and I learned a lot. Not necessarily an easy class, but if you study, an A is attainable. Really accessible outside of class and wants his students to do well. I wish there had been a textbook. Overall, a great guy and a recommended core class.
Great professor with a lot of interest in the class - knows his stuff. Take his advice on how to study seriously, it really helps with this class. No textbook but an interesting book to read for quizzes that allow you to get extra credit and somewhat supplement the material. Good core class for science requirement.
Weekly quizzes on the material, one big semester long project, and a final cumulative quiz as your final exam. He is a good teacher, but since this is a special topics class it was hard to stay on topic sometimes.
You have to literally know ALL of the notes. The tests are a little tricky, all form lectures. There is a book that the quizzes are for, and the quizzes are pretty easy. An A is attainable. However, he's very rude and brash; once I emailed him asking about my grade and he was no less than rude and degrading towards me. I felt really embarrassed.
Calcagno is a great guy and really loves what he does and wants his students to do well. He made lectures interesting and it is one of my favorite classes. He has study aids for each week to make sure you understand lectures and they are helpful for tests. Online quizzes are pretty easy since its open book. attend class, take notes, study aids A
Your grade relies on online pre-exams and actual exams. 98% of the material on the exams are from lectures (make sure to actually write down the examples he provides orally), but the 2% are from the book (so, honestly there's no true point in having the book). Definetly very smart and genuinly cares about anthropology as a whole. Def. recommend.
Best guy, always willing to help people understand, stays after class and answers questions, and always encourages students to come see him during office hours for help. Dr. Calcagno truly cares about his field and it shows in his lectures. Plus he's hilarious, take him!
Professor Calcagno is a good guy! I enjoyed his sense of humor and found the class interesting. It is not the easiest course offered at Loyola but if you work hard, pay attention, and ask for help when you need it you will be in great shape!
Class was broken down into three tests and weekly quizzes. Tests on lecture materials and quizzes on the readings. Tests were manageable if took careful notes. However, tests were quite tricky as they combined many concepts together with "none (or all) the above" answer choices and it was often hard to determine what the question was asking.
He's an awesome professor and he makes the class super interesting. I'm now doing a double major in anthropology because of this class. It's pretty much impossible to do well if you don't go to the lectures because his tests are mostly straight from lecture. You definitely have to work hard in this class to do well, but I really enjoy the class.
Dr. Calcagno is a gem! His passion for Anthropology shines throughout all his lectures. He puts a personal side to his class discussing morals and modern political nature. The tests are extremely difficult lecture and reading based; if you don't study a lot you won't pass.
Dr. Calcagno is great! He explains the material really clearly and his exams are exactly like the study aids he creates. He wants his students to succeed, and provides us with the tools necessary to do so. He introduces interesting concepts, tells little (humorous) anecdotes, and is extremely knowledgeable/passionate about biological anthropology.
Calcagno gave weekly quizzes, 3 exams and a final. Provided study aids for quizzes and exams. Must do reading and attend class to do well. Reading and lectures were relatively interesting since he provided a lot of relevant connections to current social/political issues. Very interesting class and good professor.
James is a really hard professor and knows it. He puts quotes from his lectures on tests and expects you to remember them exactly. He also makes some questions extra hard because "the smartest students like a challenge." If you're looking for an easy Tier 2 science this is NOT the class. He grades way too harsh and expects you to know too much.
Textbook is assigned, but not necessary to do alright in this class. Tests are nearly entirely lecture based, so show up. Calcagno is alright, not a professor I'd recommend but not one I'd avoid either. ANTH 101 covers a LOT of material over the 3 tests (not including final) it's sometimes confusing. Has Pre-Exam quizzes and provides study guides.
Calcagno is a great guy but his tests are based on tiny details that are impossible to remember. Even going to class every day and reading from the book doesn't help much. There's an insane amount of information you need to retain and it truly is really difficult. I personally advise against this class in general, yet calcagno is a cool guy
He's a fine professor, the subject wasn't really for me so that certainly didn't help. But he does try to make things interesting and I think his lectures were usually good. He does study guides for the quizzes (weekly) and tests (monthly) so as long as you take notes and read the book you'll do fine.
Professor Calcagno is a great professor. It is clear that he is passionate about anthropology and wants to inspire his students to not only be better at the subject, but also become better people. Weekly readings and quizzes are not too difficult. Take good notes and study his study guides, and this class will not be a challenge.
Dr. Calcagno covers all aspects of primatology, from conservation to taxonomy. I enjoyed the mix of material--zoo visits, film critiques, and enjoyable books. The tests are pretty difficult but necessary for the diversity of primates. One of the best classes I've taken at LUC!
I don't know why some of these are so negative. Calcagno is a sweet guy, & the lecture was huge but he made it still interesting. Got a little dry & 75 minutes was kinda too long but it was all good information, decently interesting, & it's really not that much reading. You don't have to be great at science to do well
I took this class because I needed a tier 2 science course and I wish that I took a different professor. His exams are extremely specific and he wants you to remember an overwhelming amount of information. On his exams he'll reference comments he made in class so make sure you show up and he'll reference the readings so make sure you do them
Cool guy, but I'd never take a class taught by him again
He's a nice guy and the information is interesting, but this class is way too difficult due to the fact you need to know an insane amount. Like every single little detail. You must show up to every lecture or you will definitely fail his tests. Unless you're an anthropology major, I don't recommend.
Even if you work super hard, theres still a chance you might fail this class
way too difficult for a 101 class especially when taking it for core. I definitely wouldn't recommend this professor. the material isn't too difficult to grasp but the exams are much more difficult than necessary and he expects you to memorize a lot of information.
If you don't attend lecture you won't pass. He doesn't upload power points and they are extremely hard to follow in class. Hardest 101 class I have ever taken and not interesting at all. Overall, one of my least favorite classes I have taken.
This class is way too difficult for a 101 class especially for a core requirement. I would not recommend this class. The exams are much more difficult than necessary and he expects you to memorize a lot of information. His PowerPoints are hard to follow and he doesnt post them.
This man deserves gold stars!!! He is extremely caring, easy to follow, and is very accessible outside of class. This class requires you to think critically and is quite interesting. He is not a hard grader and he basically spoon-feeds you the tools to do well in this class, you just have to apply yourself.
Prof. Calcagno is a great professor, he is very caring and passionate about his class and wanting us to learn. He is super understanding and gives you all the resources you need to do well. Come to class and pay attention and you will do well.
Prof Calcagno is a really funny and organized guy. I found his lectures easy to follow, and if you show up and do the work it's an easy A. Quizzes almost weekly but he provides study guides and if you fill them out you'll be good to go. Some outside reading from the "textbook," or videos for homework.
I don't understand the low ratings, Professor Calcagno was one of the best professors I've had at Loyola. He was super understanding, extremely knowledgeable, and his lectures were really engaging, funny, and interesting. I never thought I would be interested in Anthropology until I took his class. Would DEFINITELY recommend!
First time taking an anthropology class for my scientific core and it was amazing thanks to Dr. Calcagno! He's super passionate about the class and the passion rubs onto his students, his lectures were pretty long but they were bearable. There were a total of 10 quizzes that were a bit difficult at times as well as a final exam.
