He really knows his stuff and keeps it interesting. Nice guy with a lot of good stories. Class is never boring! Material is hard & the tests cover a lot of material. But he is fair and offers extra credit. I would take anything this guy offers. You will learn so much and never be bored, but it's not an easy A.

boring lecture boring professor hard test
I am a Psychology major and he is the best teacher I have had. His lectures are so interesting, and so I always want to class. I have taken Research Methods, Child Psychology, and Abnormal from him. Child was my favorite, and it is definitely the easiest! I suggest you take a class from him. You won't regret it!
This professor is really nice, VERY INTERESTING, not a super easy A, but it is definitely possible! He really is one of the most interesting teachers EVER!
The class is not the easiest, but it is extremely interesting. Professor Calvert is the best teacher I have had at SMU so far. His tests are difficult, but if you read the material and take notes in class, you will be fine. This class NEVER gets boring.
Very interesting professor. Difficult and time-consuming assignments like a research proposal and report. Taught a boring subject, but at least made it somewhat interesting.
Calvert is not only the BEST professor in the Psychology department, but is also my personal favorite. He makes a boring class quite interesting! If you go into his class willing and eager to learn, you will do fine. Calvert is awesome!
If you read the book and come to class it is possible to make an A. Yes you have to study fairly hard, but he is one of the best professors on campus BY FAR! So Many great stories!!! TAKE HIM!!
Calvert is the best Psychology professor at SMU. Take any and all classes with him that you can! Research Methods is the hardest/boring-est subject required of Psychology majors, but Calvert makes it SO interesting and actually bearable. I am so grateful I had him this semester! The class is hard, but he makes it fun and enjoyable!
Very, very, VERY time consuming research project. I'm taking his class for a Stats minor and I do more work in this class than in my 5000 ECO classes. He's passionate, knowledgable, and smart, but he's hard and his class is ridiculously time consuming.
This professor is amazing! He makes a boring class very fun. You definitely must come to class and study for the tests. There are in class assignments but they are not difficult and they help prepare you for the tests. The research paper is the most time consuming but if you do it right you can learn a lot.
Dr. Calvert is one of the best professors I have had at SMU. He is so knowledgeable and is inspiring if you want to go into the psychology field. His tests are very hard and specific but with enough effort and studying I made an A. Take anything you can with him!
The class is really interesting, but impossible. Calvert's lectures are fascinating but I could never get higher than a B on his exams or research paper. I went into his office multiple times, read the book, and studied for every exam. I'm a senior and this will be my first B EVER in a class. Not worth it.
Dr. Calvert is one of the best professors I have ever had however his history of psych course is EXTREMELY difficult. All of his exams are essay questions. Many people ended up dropping. I was considering dropping the course because of how hard it was but I really enjoyed him as a professor.
I love Dr. Calvert, but this class is very difficult. I read the entire textbook and could never make higher than a B on the tests. The class itself is very interesting, but if you aren't willing to spend many hours outside of class for it, then you should not take this course. Discussion based, so you should read the chapter before class.
This was the hardest psychology class I have ever taken at SMU. Calvert was incredibly hard to meet with outside of class and was apathetic about trying to help if you were struggling. Tests were difficult even if you went to every class and took notes and read every chapter. Would not recommend him for any class.
Seems like easy straight-forward material, but the tests are extremely tricky and hard. Professor seems nice and really interesting material. He does offer 10 pts. of extra credit.
Took Calvert for a Research Methods in Psychology course which is known to be pretty boring subject content. He made the material interesting and applicable to the psych world, and helped me understand the value of the class. Taking him for another class and can't wait to learn more from him.
Nice guy. Very time consuming class with 15 page paper and multiple tests.
I have taken Calvert for Research Methods, Disorders of Children, and Intro to Clinical. He is by far the hardest professor that I have ever had; however, his knowledge about the subject is so interesting that it makes it worth it. He is always willing to provide extra help.
Hardest psychology class I've ever taken. His tests were very difficult. However, professor Calvert is very inspirational and knowledgable.
Dr. Calvert is a great professor. He makes a boring subject (Research Methods) interesting and is very knowledgeable. However, he is an extremely tough grader. It is possible, but very difficult to make an A in his class. I went to class every day, took notes, recorded lectures and read the book but still could not make anything above a B+.
I took Dr. Calvert for Psychological Disorders of Children and he did a great job at teaching the class and made it very interesting. We had a final group project which was to watch a movie and diagnose/recommend treatment for the main character. Exams were tough, difficult to make an A.
Intro to Clinical Psychology has been one of the hardest classes I've had to take at SMU. It is extremely helpful but tough. There are no tests only oral presentations and lengthy papers that accompany them. Presentations are expected to be about 30 minutes. He grades tough on both the paper and the presentations.
Awesome and engaging professor, really knows his stuff. Difficult course content but he does a great job of relaying the information. Class has 4 tests and a final with extra credit options. He gives 6 absences no questions asked before it affects your grade. Behavioral Action of Drugs is a really hard class, but its 100% worth it with him.
I took Prof. Calvert for the Drugs class. He's very knowledgeable about what he teaches, makes lectures very interesting and often jokes. His tests are quite hard and mostly come from the lectures. The attendance policy is nice, you can miss up to 6 classes before being dropped from class (but the class is so interesting you won't want to miss)
Very good lecturer, but his tests are some of the hardest that I've ever taken in the psychology department. Do not take if you're looking for a really good grade. A lot of effort for an eh grade.
Dr. Calvert's knowledge of the topics in the class make it very interesting. The tests are difficult but not unfair and the end report will take time but expands your understanding of the class even more. Lectures are very interesting, he always has a story to tell about each disorder.
Wost teacher I've had at SMU Thus far. Calvert is incredibly inflexible no matter the circumstances. He is rude and unwilling to help students and doesn't seem to care about anyone's success in the class. His class was mostly online this semester and it was difficult to particiate. He talks wicked fast and runs through his lectures, too much info
Was really sick with COVID and he still won't give me an extension on an assignment, inflexible and abrupt. Worst class in the psych department by far
I really enjoyed this class. Dr. Calvert is an excellent professor and made this boring class enjoyable. His exams (during COVID time) are open note and fairly easy if you pay attention to his lectures and examples given during class. I would definitely recommend this class.
Very doable if you study enough and read the slides and text together. Make flashcards for the terms, and take advantage of the extra credit opportunity! He is a great teacher and gives examples for all ofthe concepts and terms! The paper is long, but if you follow directions, you should do well enough in the class. This is such an important course
There's a lot of information in this class, but (at least this year) his test were open notes, so it was very manageable. Just pay attention during lecture and you'll have all the information you need for the tests.
Nice guy and lectures aren't the worst, not the best. Whole class is graded on 4 exams and final, which are open note. Easiest for me to take notes on his Powerpoints. Overall nice guy.
There is A LOT of material for the behavior action of drugs class. 4 tests + final. Each test is about 250 pages of PPT information. You have to study hard from the beginning. Spend 8-10 hours/wk If you want B+ or more. Many drug names and biology stuff. He is kind, will try to help if you go to office hour. But still the hardest class I've taken.
The lectures are very interesting. His exams are open note and as long as you at least attend lectures you'll do fine in the class
Dr. Calvert gives great lectures, and this class was a lot of fun. Tests are open-note but are a huge time crunch. Dr. Calvert also provides extra credit opportunities (up to 15 points). The material is genuinely interesting; an essential class for anyone considering clinical psychology or medicine. An A is possible if you put in the effort.
Psychology of Evil is a super interesting topic, and Dr. Calvert is very well versed on the matter. It is a very demanding course, maybe because I took it in the summer, but it was really difficult to keep up with deadlines and readings. He is also a very. difficult grader. I'm not confident anyone received above an 88 on the main project. Nice guy
This class is hard, but Dr. Calvert is great and knows what he is talking about. What really helped me with the exams was reading the textbook to myself out loud. He lets you have notes for the exams so print out all of his slides and write down your own notes from reading. Its time consuming but the information is interesting.
Lectures are usually interesting and full of fun information and personal experiences in the field. However, he is so uncaring when it comes to any and all personal problems a student may have. Don't get sick or have a family issue. Miss a test, 9/10 can't make it up or points will be deducted. Not worth dealing with. Also, extremely pretentious.
Amazing lecturer, super interesting topics. Dr. Calvert really enjoys his lectures and makes them easy to follow. His tests are open note, but you should be familiar with your notes/go over them before the test. 100% recommend
Dr. Calvert is the best psychology professor that I have ever had at SMU. His lectures were so interesting that they made me want to come to every single class. Such a caring person and also got a great sense of humor. Tests were extremely hard though, so be prepare to spend a lot of time on studying for the tests. Totally recommend him!
This class was the most interesting and enjoyable class I've ever taken. Dr. Calvert is an amazing lecturer and has a great sense of humor. Classes are so fun and the class itself is such a blast. Dr. Calvert is quite a severe grader but as long as you try hard and ask for help, you will do well.
Dr. Calvert is super smart, and when taking this class, it's obvious he knows what he is talking about. The class is only graded by 4 exams (100 points each, 50 MC) and 1 final (200 points, 100 MC), so I don't recommend if you're a poor test taker. The exams are open notes, but the questions are super specific. As a psych major, I loved this class.
Great professor! The lectures were interesting. The course is 4 exams plus the finals.
He lulls you into a false sense of security with open-note tests and a cool EOY Movie Report, but I went to office hours often, printed 20+ pages of slides, spent hours actually reading the textbook, and never got above a B- until May. Fascinating content with fun anecdotes, but he needs to add a curve to make this class worth the tears I shed.
Dr. Calvert is easily the best professor I have ever had. This course was both interesting and engaging and the assignments were straightforward. The hardest part of this class was making sure you have the correct citations for the research paper. Live, Laugh, Love James Calvert
Grades reports and presentations unreasonably. Sounds like an interesting class, but so not worth it.
save yourself now. do NOT take. graded by 4 tests & a final exam. tests are confusing & all application questions. memorizing so many drugs & biology terms which sound similar to one another. you must remember the tiniest details, too. went to tutoring & it did not help. studied for hours & still only got a C+ or even an F on exams. do. not. take.
DO NOT TAKE! He wrote the textbook and all the slides, he wants so much detail. The first year ever the test isn't open note and he is so detailed in his tests it's impossible to get a good grade. I could not be more clear, DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. I took it for my major credit but literally take any class that he's not teaching for credit instead.
DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS UNLESS YOU HAVE TO (psych major, ect.)!!! Don't let "PSYC" fool you. It's a biochemistry class. Nice guy, but this material is so incredibly tough, and his exams, despite being multiple choice, are horrific and aren't open note anymore. You have so much material that you don't even know how to study. TRUST ME, DON'T TAKE!!!
I have taken 3 class with Calvert and I really enjoyed all of them! Your grade is almost entirely based on exams, but they arent bad if you study. I love his lectures and find his classes fun and engaging
I took him for Psychopathology. He is the BEST. Attendance is mandatory but you have a 3 free skips. All exams are lockdown browser in class but straightforward, directly from the slides and book. he talks pretty fast in lectures but the slides are posted and book is not required. He's super knowledgable and hilarious. great guy and professor
Inflexible office hours are useless and his entire class a waste of time. TAKE ANYONE ELSE.
He is a very personable teacher. His lectures are very engaging and cover a LOT of what will be on the tests, so be sure to show up and take good notes. He is also extremely willing to work with you during his office hours and he is very accommodations friendly! Some proffers make it very hard for students to use their necessary accommodations.
Daily paper attendance & most of the test content is based on his lecture. So, you also need to be awake/attentive!! Graded by tests which really hurts if you don't test well. Unorganized slides & confusing textbook. You need to study both + be attentive in class. I pulled an all-nighter for a 76. Sona extra credit but barely helps.
The content of this class is interesting, but Dr. Calvert is a very hard grader for the evildoer presentations (50 mins) and paper. Also, I found his comments on the presentation to be a bit blunt and rude, while being unhelpful. Everyone essentially teaches a class, so if that scares you, don't take this class.
NOT A PSYCHOLOGY CLASS! It is a presentation course, you will present... A LOT! He is a INCREDIBLY tough grader on talking and flow. I spent many hours trying to perfect my presentation by visiting office hours and still did poorly. He is also very inconsistent with grading, nearly unfair. It made me lose interest in psychology. Terrible class
Professor seems to have lost sight of what teaching is for: to instruct students in a manner that advances learning. Instead, he lectures makes us do all of the work and grades unnecessarily harshly on the assignments. The subject matter should be interesting but he makes it dull and grades are subjective. Take another class.
This class is super interesting and Calvert is a great professor for it! The biggest parts of the class is an in-depth report on someone who is assigned to you in which you will write a research paper then present to the class. The next is a book report which isn't too bad. Other than that, go to class and listen (I never took notes).
DO NOT take this, unregister for the course now. You are graded solely by tests and a final but their content is all confusing & intense applied questions. Have to memorize so many drugs & terms which sound similar to one another, even smallest details, studying did not help and neither does chegg bc he changes everything year to year
Dr. Calvert is one of the most caring professors I've ever had. He's a tough grader, and he admits to it, but as long as you study (well in advance) you will be fine. The examples he gives in class are usually from his own experience, so it makes learning even more fun and interesting.
Dr. Calvert is straightforward with expectations and he wants everyone to succeed. Attend lectures and take notes. Most people who don't study or take notes are failing and writing bad reviews. If you don't like psychology, then don't take him. He is the most knowledgable psych professor here, and gives such amazing insight to the psychology field.
The class is lecture heavy four unit exams, comprehensive final exam, and small quiz for each chapter. No participation or attendance grades. Course content is extremely detailed and difficult. He expects you to know specifics and the content in depth. Quizlets online won't help, he changes his new exams. Not a fun elective for the psyc major.
worst course of my life and he's the worst, online exams won't help and the level of detail required is more for graduate level, DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE
Lectures make no sense, a lot of ranting and repetitive. Went to office hours to get feedback but at the end its useless. Expects you to read for a class that is an elective, completely not reasonable.
He definitely is the worst professor i had ever had in smu. He barely care about his students. And his teaching makes this class extremely hard, i mean , way more harder than it supposed to be.
Calvert is great, but this class was TOUGH. He takes participation very seriously - you must raise your hand and ENGAGE in discussions. There's a 15+ page report and a 40 MINUTE PRESENTATION on an evildoer. AND a book report, then two more books for the final exam. He WILL give you a zero for cheating or using AI and will know if you didn't read.
an absurd amount of work, even if you do it all, you still won't get an A
Dont take this professor. This was the worst experience of my life. Absolutely everything is excessive. Take literally anything but this professor.
Did not teach anything before tests. Gives you the wrong material to study for the tests.
By far the hardest class I've taken. The exams are so content heavy and specific, it feels like a board exam for psychiatrics. I would study for WEEKS and never received anything above an 82, and I'm usually an A student. He is a great man but too smart to teach bc he assumes its common knowledge. His powerpoints are confusing as is the textbook.
Expectations are so impossibly high. I worked and studied and stressed for hours just to get lousy grades. This is without exaggeration the most stressful class I've taken in college. Class is disorganized full of random jargon. He is mocking to students when they ask questions too with some disrespectful facial expressions. Save your grades avoid.
Dr. Calvert's high-level courses are tough, but he's the most engaging Psychology lecturer I've encountered at this school. If you are taking a psychology course for CC, take personality or something else, but if you are genuinely interested in psychology, you will love this class.
Worst lecturer I've experienced. Disrespectful in tone and facial expressions towards us, will not answer questions on material but will respond with more questions like he's being demure when he's not. Literally impossible to get an A in here and anyone who says otherwise or that he's a good teacher is James.
This class made me a better person. It is not an "easy A" by any means, but the material is SO interesting and Professor Calvert is eager to make his expectations as clear as possible. Very accessible outside of class and he will give you honest feedback. This class was 90% STUDENT presentations, which was a unique change. Simple extra credit, too.
He definitely is the worst professor i had ever had in smu. He barely care about his students. And his "teaching" makes this class extremely hard, i mean , way more harder than it supposed to be because he doesn't teach at all and then our grades are based on vague instructions. Worse, was belittling to a girl who presented imperfectly. Avoid.
WORST PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER TAKEN. Will show you NO MERCY gpa tanker
DON'T TAKE DON'T TAKE DON'T TAKE
Professor Calvert is a professor I would avoid at all costs. He only lectures off slides and your grade is based only on 4 tests, 1 final, and 1 project. He doesn't care if his students get a good grade or not. He is easily accessible outside of class but is not helpful. He skims around questions when you ask. This class is heavy on memorization
DO NOT TAKE HIM this is easily the worst and uncaring professor i have ever taken in my life. When it comes to a student or grade he does not CARE. YOU CAN'T change his mind and he is truly evil. He tricked our class into taking an exam that we were not prepared for on the aspect of difficulty, not material all because he caught a person cheating.
Worst teacher I've ever met in my entire life. Takes pleasure in tricking students who study off quizlet by intentionally misleading them about course material and then making up a fake exam that has nothing to do with material taught. Fake tests that will tank you gpa, evil disaster of a person who couldn't be anything other than a bad teacher
The information isn't hard, but he picks and chooses the details he wants you to know. All of the tests were on Quizlet, so as long as you memorize the gist of those you'll be fine. The movie paper wasn't hard to do, and he graded them pretty leniently. The class wasn't necessarily an easy A, but it wasn't the hardest psychology class I've taken.
Worst Professor i've ever had. Doesn't want his students to succeed. Provides zero review material and his lectures are pretty much useless. Teaches so much information that you don't need to know for the tests. Classes are so overwhelming and over complicated. Save your gpa, DO NOT TAKE.
I honestly really wanted to like him. He expects students to know everything he does. That is just not realistic because we are still undergraduates and are just not at the same level that a PhD Psych student would be in. Would you ask a kindergartener to solve an algebraic expression for you? No. The powerpoints are also rushed and confusing.
Genuinely the weirdest professor I've ever had. Says super strange things in class and isn't a good teacher either. Pretty rude too.
Whenever you ask questions after class he is short and rude with you with his answers. If you are late to class and cant sign in, he counts it as an absence even if you attend class. His exams are super specific and hard so good luck.
he will not let you makeup tests no matter what the reason, even if your parent is dying, he is cold and ruthless and his tests are literally impossible, should not have a job here
Dr. Calvert is a very informative and wonderful professor. He really teaches about psychology and cares about the efficacy of the information he provides to you! He is a knowledge gold-mine but his tests are hard so try your best, but learn from him the most! This course should not be taken grade centrically, but to learn and seek knowledge. 10/10!
TESTS ARE SO HARD. DO NOT TAKE.
Told the class he expects c to be the highest grade- feels like a teaching problem not a student problem if no one can pass your class. Extremely difficult tests- it's a graduate course but for undergraduates that you are forced to take for your major. He is cold and ruthless.
WORST PROFESSOR IVE EVER HAD. DO NOT TAKE DO NOT TAKE. NO CURVE WHEN THE CHEATING SORORITY GIRL WITH THE BLUE CUP MAKES THE ONLY A USING HER PHONE
He fails to stop students from cheating than refuses to curve because ONE got an A. She's the blonde sorority girl who never attends in the second to last row he came up to them about the drinks during the exam but never caught them so we all now have to suffer with Cs
Me and my mother actually hate james. I've never met such a not empathetic person who wants you to fail. Doesn't matter if you are in the emergency room, or anything else (it's always ur fault). May drop for my own piece of mind bc he's made me PHYSICALLY ILL 2 times this semester
2nd class with Calvert bc I had to for major. If you don't find the quizlets, you're not going to do well unless you devote a ridiculous amount of time to studying. I enjoy his lectures but he tests on the smallest details that he brushes over in class. I am a straight A student and Calvert's class make me think I'm done for every time.
Honestly it's a hard class, because the material is hard. The tests are somewhat brutal, but he's a nice guy and you learn sooo much. He's always willing to meet outside of class, and go over material. He knows what he's teaching, I haven't seen him make a mistake so far. Attendance is mandatory but he give you 11 minutes to sign in
He is the worst teacher I've ever had in my entire life. Can't teach to save his life and he's super unorganized and ridiculous in course policies with attendance, cheating, etc. yet STILL can't stop the cheating so you'll never get a good grade. Hated this old miserable man so much
The tests are not too bad if you go over the slides and pay attention to the examples from class. The content is pretty boring and will not make sense if you are not a psych major. You can't pass the class without putting in at least a medium amount of effort. He's very knowledgeable about the content and can answer any question you ask
I BEG DO NOT TAKE HIM. FOR YOUR GPA AND HEALTH. worst man ever. Does not care at all even if you try and talk with him. Belittling and will screw u over.
PURE EVIL. not accessible outside of class and does not care because he is “tenured so nothing is going to happen”. DON'T TAKE.
Dense lectures with very specific exam questions - not impossible to do without quizlet but I studied SO long to get C's. At least he gives lots of extra credit, allows 6 absences, and curves grades (ended with 90.92, rounded to 93). Very enthusiastic professor and passionate about the course, more personable than other Psyc profs I've met.
THE WORST DO NOT TAKE. I'M WARNING YOU. Hates his job and students and will try to fail you. My mom has filed many complaints.
