Graded on a few problem sets and tests, with some group projects thrown in. Great lecturer, and just generally a nice and chill guy who loves teaching. He doesn't go easy on you though, so put in the time you need to relative to the grade you want.
His GSI's would take off points for not submitting individual pages per question on Gradescope. He grades heavily and doesn't curve the class up. He wouldn't boost up my friend's grade from a B+ (89.9%) to an A-. He also tends to not reply to emails so don't bother emailing him.
Professor Campbell is really nice, but the experience I had in his class with the lengthy assignments, tests, and awful quizzes, I would not take again and would not recommend. It was econ 1 but felt like an upper div. The content was taught in a confusing and difficult way. REALLY tough grader, expect to fail quizzes and be graded harshly.
I really do like Prof. Campbell -- he's young, relatable, and very passionate about what he does. He structures his class in a way that's more theoretical, so he will be difficult if you're a stick-to-the-book type. Quizzes are difficult -- put in the time to really understand the concepts though and you will excel.
I took Econ1 in the summer with no Econ experience and found it pretty straightforward with Campbell. If you understand the concepts and know how to apply them, you won't really need the book and should be good. Campbell is passionate and easy to understand so in terms of lecturer he is a great choice
Professer Campbell is nice and his lectures are interesting, BUT I WON'T TAKE HIS CLASSES EVER AGAIN. The quizzes are VERY TOUGH and the time limit is EXTREMELY TIGHT. Simply attending his lectures is not enough to get a good score. You have to do plenty of extra work to keep up with the pace. AND THE QUIZZES COUNT 50% TOTAL GRADE. LIKE GEEZ.
I am currently taking Econ100A with Jim, and it is hard, but really enjoyable. This class is math heavy (not hard, just calc/algebra). Make sure you really UNDERSTAND each topic, as his tests are NOT like practice problems, more applications of your understanding. However, you learn a ton, and he has inspired a love for ECON in me. I RECOMMEND!
Jim is genuinely one of my favorite professors. I think his quizzes are actually rather straight forward. He explains things in such a way that just watching lectures and doing practice problems before a quiz is enough for me to ace them, and I am by no means an econ whiz. Made me want to double major in econ!
Prof is a great person and a really nice guy but I would never take him again. Absolutely the hardest class I've ever taken and your grade depends 50% on the quizzes which are EXTREMELY hard. Nothing like you've ever seen before and the material provided is not enough, really feels like you're on your own. He doesn't drop a bad score either, HARSH.
I get what he's trying to do in having 6 quizzes as opposed to 2 midterms, but I have never seen my grades suffer like this in classes with the classic midterm set-up. Jim, if you're gonna make quizzes 50%, you need to factor improvement. Would I get a beer with him? In a heartbeat. Would I take his class, again? No.
definitely tough to understand conceptually if you don't have any experience with econ coming out of high school; otherwise, prof. Campbell has an amazing personality, explains things effectively, and is very lenient and forgiving in his policies.
Good professor (pretty funny & relatable guy), straightforward lectures. The course pack he created for the semester has all the information you need to do well on the quizzes. However, if you want a deeper understanding of the concepts, watch the virtual/video textbook lectures.
Such a cool and passionate economist! The caveat, of course, is the material: you really have to work for your grade. This class is light on the HW, but don't let that fool you -- you have to read EVERY resource he provides to even get a shot at a good grade. Prepare to dedicate more than the 4 units of work it requires.
Although the grading is a bit tough, Campbell gives you all the resources you need to succeed. Very affable guy and down to Earth; pretty difficult but fair class. Make sure you understand the material before you go into the quiz, as Campbell likes to throw curveballs.
He does not go over concepts at all during lectures. Instead, he makes us watch UCSD videos and do problems in class. He goes over about 1 problem per hour by wasting time on totally irrelevant things. Worst of all, the final gradebin is 3% higher than what he posted before the deadline to change grading options. I am genuinely confused.
He's a cool guy, but this is definitely a tough class. I kind of wished that my grade wasn't so dependent on 6 rather difficult quizzes that made up 50% of my grade in this class. A quiz drop policy would have been helpful since I did pretty bad on one of the earlier quizzes which pretty much messed up my average for the rest of the semester.
Took Econ 1 with him over summer and got an 89.97% but he didn't boost my grade up to an A-. The class was very test heavy and if you failed one test you would probably end up with a C for the whole semester. Might seem like a nice guy but a very tough grader who won't have the empathy to boost you up a bit even if you need the class to declare.
great guy, really cares about his students + his impact. as long as you put in the work, it is perfectly reasonable for you to do well in the class. if he offered other classes i wouldnt hesitate taking them, probably my favorite professor thus far
Campbell is sweet, funny, and genuinely cares about his students and the impact he makes. His lectures are entertaining and interesting, and he is very accessible/ happy to answer questions. That said, he gets off topic very easily which can be detrimental since there are less than 2 hrs/wk of lecture. Show up, do the work, and you should get an A.
He gives lecture in a speed of words that makes you feel your brain is working like an engine. He doesn't give us a textbook but he uses a coursepack to make everything clear and neat. I'm curious about how he just runs through some examples to illustrate all the concepts you need to know for the quiz. My favorate professor.
One of the best professors and lecturers at Cal. Professor Campbell is incredibly caring, down-to-earth, knowledgeable, and downright hilarious. Quizzes are challenging but reasonable, all the economic concepts covered are interesting and useful, and all of his lectures are funny, enjoyable, engaging, and super relatable. Can't recommend enough!
I love Professor Campbell as a person and think he's a nice guy. That being said, the structure of this class is absolutely ridiculous. The GSIs in this class take off so many points without explanation and just make up their own grading rubrics. Quizzes are 45% of the grade and even a couple of points can drop your grade an entire letter grade.
By the time this professor and his crew of GSIs successfully graded all our quizzes and midterms, Japan would be under the ocean, the United States would have its 100th president, and China would be at war with India. In other words, this guy takes ages to mark a single homework. Truly disappointing. Oh, and somehow this guy hates free market.
Overall really great teaching. Lecture material was generally very clear and motivated. I found that despite the fast pace of the course, I was able to get a good grasp of all the material covered.
Professor Campbell is charming, engaging, and a very talented lecturer. I never liked economics but I loved his class! Very wholesome vibes.
He assigns very time-constrained quizzes that are worth 45% of your grade, and he loves to be tricky. He doesn't really explain or contextualize anything during lectures and prefers to solve problems at glacial speeds in lieu of actually teaching the material. I wish I had been able to choose either Carson or Olney, who are superior lecturers.
Clearly a very passionate prof, cares a lot about not just teaching exam material but also about why the material matters and its real world applications. Lectures are clear and understandable, if a bit fast. One con is that his grading criteria was not very clear, and it was not always easy to understand what made an answer good vs just okay.
An amazing and passionate professor. Great at putting complex topics into simple terms. Tests were straightforward and very similar to previous exams he gave out as practice. Go to office hours if you can because he is genuinely a caring and understanding person. Certainly a strong choice for someone who has little experience with economics.
One of the worst professor to ever be employed by the university. I do not question his education or research, but I have always been questioning his teaching methods. Takes ages to mark homework, curve grades up and down throughout the semester, and extremely anti-capitalism, which I find ironic since he's a naturalised US citizen...
Campbell is definitely a tough professor who makes you put in the work to succeed, but words cannot describe how nice and genuine he is. He really cares about his students and the content he is teaching and he always makes himself accessible outside of class to his students. He's a visiting professor, so be sure to take a class with him soon!
Pretty good lecturer, but he goes through content very quickly. His lectures are fun and he spends a lot of time explaining the real-life applications of the lecture concepts. His office hours are very helpful for homework/quiz help. The quizzes themselves are not super difficult, but you have to be able to write a lot very quickly.
Incredibly AWFUL at lecturing. He's pretending to be so chill and act all bro with his students by skipping through important math and explanations regarding more complex concepts. You will not learn A THING (at least anything advance) by going to his lectures.
great guy, lectures are easy to understand and is always available for extra help during office hours
Great prof! Teaches really well!
Jim is extremely passionate about econ and yes his quizzes may be tricky, however he really cares about preparing us. He provides all the resources to succeed in the class and has literally handcrafted hundreds of problems to prepare us for quizzes. He genuinely cares a lot and you can see that as he makes himself very available for any questions.
I really loved Professor Campbell. I had him for Econ 1 and Econ 100A and he makes economics so interesting. His tests are definetly a bit tricky but he is also super helpful if you go to OH.
Professor Campbell is a nice person. He is genuinely passionate about what he teaches. However, he breezes through his lectures and is a very tough grader. It may be because I don't have prior experience with econ. but this being an introductory course/pre-req course.. wow.. The average for our most recent midterm was 20/30 (66.67%).
Probably the worst lecturer or teacher I've ever had. Completely unclear and annoying teaching style that is all over the place and difficult to follow. He refuses to deliver the content in a straightforward way and insists on haphazardly teaching through example problems, making the actual concepts difficult to understand. Really really bad.
Professor Campbell explains things clearly and is a very amusing professor. He teaches unconventionally, not using a textbook or traditional lectures and instead opting to teach through practice problems (and he provides a good variety of these). Importantly, for his quizzes, there will be curveballs so it is important to understand the concepts.
His lectures are super helpful. The only thing I did was watching the lecture recordings before each quiz, and I got near full scores on all quizzes. Simply master his lectures and the class becomes easy.
Professor Campbell is a wonderful lecturer who always throws something in to keep your attention. Hes a very inspirational speaker who wants you to form your own opinions and wont tell you what you should think. He lays excellent groundwork for economics I would highly recommend!
The material itself is not too difficult, but the class grades WAY TOO HARSHLY. They give very limited time for Quizzes and expect intensely elaborate explanations for all of your answers and if you don't, they would take several percents off even if your answer is correct. There is no rubric either, they just grade based on what they feel "enough"
He's genuinely passionate about econ and wants you to learn. His lectures are SUPER helpful. I didn't have any prior experience whatsoever in econ, but his exams are straightforward. Just re-watch his lectures and do the coursepack problems! Coursepack probs. are just like the real exams. There's also a textbook but IMO don't bother. Take him :)
This class was so much fun! Jim is an amazing, caring, and thoughtful professor. Most importantly, he knows what he's doing. He's great at lecturing and engaging his students, even with an online class. That said, be sure to put in extra work if you want anything above a B. Go to office hours, ask questions and you should be fine.
had him summer 2020. good lecturer & funny guy but not much beyond that. problem sets were worth the majority of the grade & very difficult. said he would lessen their weight but never did. didnt like how he made it sound like he was sympathetic to students bc of the pandemic and political climate but didnt bother making the class any easier.
This was the best course I've ever taken at Cal. Even with the flaws of his class (sometimes too subjective grading in quizzes, occasional disorganization), he at least tries to be as fair as he can. I learned a LOT from watching his lectures, and I did it all asynchronously. I told him at the end he was the best professor I had. Take him!
Prof Campbell was really engaging throughout his lectures and made sure to tie in the concepts we were learning with the real world. Graded mainly off of 3 midterms and 1 final, I'd recommend one to study a fair amount of practice problems (provided by the prof) before each test as performing poorly on one can really tank your grade.
His class is chill and his lecture notes are VERY WELL WRITTEN. I got a 88% only because I was nearly not putting in any effort (due to two other really hard classes I was taking). I did not watch any lectures and barely went to discussions, only read over the lecture slides 3 hours before each midterm. Midterms and final are essay/SAQ based.
Jim is like a friend to us. His lectures are interesting and he explains concepts clearly. He motivates us to think like real economists rather than students who only pursue good grades. However, admittedly, this class is pretty hard for people that are not super familiar with Econ.
Very good lecturer and person, made economics very interesting
Very simple guidelines to pass class, 5 quizzes and a final essay. Gives solutions to quizzes afterwards as well as past quizzes and practice problems. Put in the work and an A will be easy!
This class was great and fairly easy although I did have some background in econ. The course pack is your best friend! The midterms are basically the same structure as the course pack and it is a great way to study.
I LOVE professor Campbell. His lectures are very entertaining and he manages to connect concepts in class to outside material/news often to show the impact of learning economics. He cracks a lot of jokes in class and makes it a fun time for everyone. He has also been the most accommodating professor with DSP!
Such a good and captivating speaker. Super reasonable with the content he tests. If you do all the coursepack problems and actually understand the ins and outs, you will do well. Really accommodating with extensions and just overall a good guy!
Professor Jim has a very organized format for the class and will always include a joke in his lectures. There are three midterms, but if you look at the coursepack he provides then midterms are pretty easy.
Campbell is a very fair professor. 1 assignment every week with clear instructions, and 3 midterms. He tries to connect with students during lectures. His exams are quite difficult, and not similar to the course pack provided.
Great lectures, very engaging in class, presents source material relatively accurately, though at times I needed the discussions to clarify it. Not much homework, just a presentation and reading responses which are hard to fail. Mostly graded on 3 midterms and a final, which are easy to prepare for and accurately reflect what is taught. Good prof.
He is a very kind professor, I really enjoyed going to his lectures, plus his accent is nice to listen to lol. Always has fun stories and teaches well. The class is mostly dependent on the GSI tbh, luckily mine was amazing, he's very accessible outside of class even though we had around 600 students. Midterms are a bit difficult but I recommend.
One of the best economics professor at Berkeley. His lectures are truly inspirational. Not boring at all. More like a performance! We got to solves the questions together. Hopefully you'll enjoy his lectures as much as I do!
Great professor who actually explained the concepts well and made the class fun
Campbell is one of the reasons that I am majoring in Economics. I had him for both Econ 1 & 100A, and his lectures are super engaging. Both classes are doable and the exams are fair. I am not a big fan of the Final Exam format (it's 2 essays), but overall, both classes were really fun and interesting.
Campbell lectures were awesome. He will stop during lecture to clarify any points that were confusing. Weekly writing assignments and one presentation were both easy. The questions on the exams were similar to his course pack, though he likes to throw a curveball sometimes. He offered a remote option for finals if you got CoVid during finals week.
Professor Campbell is the best professor I've had at Cal. I highly recommend going to lecture (he's really good at explaining concepts!) and doing the course pack problems. Definitely take his class!
Lectures deviate a lot from the slides so it can be difficult to review. Lectures consist of a lot of visuals and real world examples but lack in definitions. Make sure you understand foundational concepts or else you will be lost because he moves quickly. 3 midterms and an essay final which is graded super easy (mean of 88.6%).
Very nice person and loves to interact with students. Can be a little confusing at times but will clarify if asked during office hours.
Professor Campbell is very straightforward. Doing well in the class is easy if you attend lectures, discussions, and study the course pack.
Prof is awesome! Highly recommend. Lectures are easy to follow and he is good at answering questions. Be careful: do not underestimate the midterms. They are difficult if you show up overconfident. You can do well if you pay attention and study carefully. Shoutout to the SLC for getting my anime comeback in this class
The lectures were VERY content heavy, if you spaced out during a lecture it was difficult to keep up, but he explained the concepts really well and the practice exam and final questions were pretty accurate to the actual exams. The exams were pretty difficult, but I enjoyed the class nonetheless.
This teacher makes it fun to learn!
Genuinely enjoyable human
Midterms almost every 3 weeks - workload can get exhaustive if you fall behind in lecture content. Exams are graded arbitrarily and literally based on how the grader 'feels'. Sometimes the midterms can have really randomly hard questions not reflected in practice problems.
Midterms every 3 weeks get annoying, especially considering the unclear grading criteria. On our last midterm, the class got a mean of 70%. WELL, I GUESS STUDENTS CAN BE ONLY AS GOOD AS THEIR TEACHER... Used to like Econ before him :(
This man single-handedly revived my love for Econ. He truly cares for his students and not only lectures amazingly but will drill these concepts into you without you knowing. Assignments and presentations are lightweight, grades exams pretty fairly, wish he taught more classes. By far my favorite professor.
Use the course pack. The course pack that he posts will save your understanding and save your grade. Lecture attendance and discussion attendance were not necessary, keeping up with the material is essential.
Super nice and fair professor who handled the strike very well. However, I do not think he is the best lecturer and although lectures are somewhat interesting, he leaves all test material to the GSIs. I like how the course is laid out but feel he could better prepare students and made my econ 1 experience quite difficult.
Literally hands down the best professor I've ever had. He is so passionate about what he is teaching and made me passionate about Economics again. He always encourages his students to challenge the current state of society and tries to plan his course to best support his students in doing so. Would highly recommend!
Fire professor, Campbell is so engaging and interesting to listen to, he's still very young and knows how to connect well with students
Jim is nice, funny, and loves teaching, which makes lectures bomb. He's young but so so intelligent, it's scary. This makes midterms and the final essay difficult because he knows how to make you think and apply. The rest of your grade is completely GSI-dependent so shop around and find a good one.
Jim is a great prof who truly cares about his students. This policies due to the strike were extremely generous and shows how he prioritizes our learning above all else.
Professor Campbell keeps all of his lectures interesting and actually applicable towards the real world. This class involves biweekly reading responses, 3 midterms (no drops), and a final. You have to do 1 presentation with a partner in the discussion section. Overall this class is a great intro to economy and the Professor is always enjoyable.
Professor Campbell's lectures are great, though it may take a second watch to fully understand. He is also so understanding and was the most accommodating professor during the UAW strike this semester. His final was essay based, while his midterms were more of the stereotypical test structure. All in all, great dude, great professor.
Jim was a great professor. His lectures are enjoyable and informational. Midterms and finals are very reasonable and allows for students to display how they interact with the lecture material.
He is humble given how scarily smart he is. The reading response and essay format really align with the course objectives. It would have been easier for me to follow if there was either a traditional lecture format or regular p-sets. There are 3 midterms, 4 reading responses, a presentation, and a sample final + final, but he has a clear rubric.
Campbell made my freshman year the best. Econ 1a material is honestly light coming from AP econ, but his teaching style covers the game theory and broader implications of the basic material. The lectures are absolutely worth attending in-person. I decided to fit extra econ classes into my schedule just to take more classes from him.
You will know what to expect in exams if you study the packet. The packet of practice problems will be your best friend. Same questions, different answers type questions. Very engaging and energetic. SUPER excited about the subject. Final exam is fairly easy- write a couple essays from a list of prompts.
Best professor at Cal
I respect other students liking this type of teaching, studying by themselves and then getting tested. I personally really don't like these type of classes. This class was mostly about learning bymyself and the lectures were just solving homework sets. I rather prefer a proper lecture format. I really cannot get motivated.
really good at teaching for sure
I took his class first semester, and it's what convinced me to be an Econ major. He makes everything super interesting, and he's pretty lenient with grading.
I'm a public health major and this will probably be the only econ class I ever take but it was so fun. I really enjoyed Jim's lectures and I feel that he's an awesome person overall and he actually cares about the society and our future
Best teacher at Cal.
A wonderful man. Infectious enthusiasm. Lectures were all practice problems, which was a little strange structurally, but overall very useful to jump into example questions right away. Loved that he integrated reading responses into the course. Very in-touch w students and what's happening in modern microeconomics. Highly highly recommend.
its not a class you can just cram last minute for but hes rly good at explaining concepts and his lectures and the course pack are rly relevant to exams. hes funny and relatable and clearly very well versed in and passionate about economics
Campbell's preparation, such as the course pack he assigns, are great to helping one understand the content of the class. In lecture, he goes over concepts slowly in an easy-to-digest manner. The key to succeeding in this class is to do the course pack problems ahead of the midterms. The final is easy, the mean was a 90% (just two written essays).
Interesting lectures, exams similar to the practise problems
Professor Campbell was great and so so good at teaching. You either get econ or you have no idea what you're doing half of the time. I was the latter. He was an awesome prof, I just absolutely suck at econ.
Great lecturer and professor, just a strict and harsh grader tbh.
Although he is a funny and passionate guy, this has been by far my least favorite class at Cal. I am bad at econ however I tried extremely hard on the midterms and he purposefully graded me harshly. I truly believe that they are trying to do bad. Would not recommend it unless you need to take the class.
jim is an incredible lecturer, this was one of my favorite classes at cal and i can't wait to take 100A with him next semester. there is no homework, just biweekly papers and a presentation. my midterm scores were about 70-80%, this is without much studying. do the coursepack and you will do fine! the final exam is writing 2 essays on the spot.
Amazing lectures and if you go to section the material is very easy to understand. Generally a very fair grader and communicates very clearly about grades and what he is expecting for exams and assignments. He's also just a great guy in general
lectures are okay, but focus too much on problems instead of concepts. Midterms are COMPLETELY different from the practice midterms, don't be fooled. Like why do you test this hard and different for midterms LOL especially your final is completely different, which is just writing essays. You prepare ten hours for midterms and just forget right away
He round up my class score from b+ to a-
Don't really need to go to class
Drippiest professor at Cal and all-around great guy. Love that he makes econ approachable and fun. Also tells funny stories, and has an epic sneaker collection.
Super down-to-earth dude. Well-organized class and clear presentation of course topics. Prof is usually more than willing to help you out outside of class as long as you ask for it. Amazing guy overall, an awesome introduction to Berkeley. You can really tell that he has a passion for teaching.
Class is made up of: homework assignments, discussion presentation, midterms, and final. No attendance for lectures or discussions, however I would recommend going. Professor is passionate and very helpful/good at teaching material clearly. Some busy work assignments. 3 Total midterms similar to practice problems, and an in-class essay final.
Engaging lecturer, challenging exams. Lectures and readings largely focus on the mechanics of economic models, while exams are geared towards conceptual/mathematical understandings.
study the course pack and make sure to really understand the answers!! not a class you want to fall behind in. lectures are hard to follow, kind of useless. midterms are tough (there are 3), and final is an essay, which helps round out your grade. nice and funny guy
His lectures are really interesting and inspirational. However, the lectures do nothing to prepare you for the midterm exams. He recommends doing previous exam questions from his course pack to study, but every one of the three exams in the fall 2023 semester had curve-ball questions that didn't resemble any of the course pack questions.
Econ 100A is a tough course, but Jim makes lectures fun and engaging. Material is tough, and midterms are quite difficult, but this is compensated by easy final. Jim genuinely cares about his students and is a great professor to learn from
Jim is a spectacular lecturer who has very interesting classes. However, (like other people reviewed) the lectures sometimes don't completely pertain to the midterms, so it's important to always keep up with the packet. It's a great introduction to economics though!
Best lecturer, love his abstraction of concepts that makes everything very intuitive
Love Jim. Best professor ever. Lectures are engaging and relevant. Course pack problems are a great way to use active studying. Genuinely changed the way I think about the world.
Professor Campbell is one of the best professors I've had at Berkeley. I think everyone, Econ major or not, should take his class. He is unbelievably kind, and he breaks concepts down simply and perfectly. His lectures are very thought provoking and enable you to be creative. I truly developed a love for economics by taking this class.
GOATED. Never took AP Micro/Macro but I was chilling in this class. Do the course pack and ask Chatgpt to explain you stuff that you don't get - its essential to truly understand everything in the course pack. Awesome prof, tbh wish he taught all my classes. Spend the time = get the good grade. One hw assignment every other week, lightttttt work
Campbell is generally great at explaining key concepts, but he often goes way too slow in lecture. His pace prevents him from covering topics in detail, so you essentially have to teach yourself all the material outside of lecture through his infamous "course pack." Be prepared for his horrid, ear-destroying music taste to bookend lecture times.
honestly you dont need to go to lecture just study the course pack + look at the slides on ur own time/ recordings, then gsi OH. he's a great guy but the lectures dont really cover the complexity of the coursepaoc, since most the stuff you need to write to explain, besides the graph. he's super cool if I known course pack was important id take
Prof Campbell is actually the goat. His lectures are very engaging and he's just a funny person. It's clear that he loves what he teaches. He also rounds up grades if you're near a cutoff! Absolute tank.
I love Campbell he is literally the best lecturer of all time.
Campbell teaches 100A way differently than Econ 1 -- it's a lot of him doing coursepack problems on the screen and answering questions. That is to say, he is the best lecturer I've ever had and I went to every class. He stays after for up to an hour just to talk with students and is really committed to making sure you learn the content. Great guy.
Very caring and knowledgeable guy. This class has a lot of content and moves quickly so it's important to keep up with and understand the course pack as much as possible. Don't wait to cram right before the tests. To be honest, I didn't do great on the midterms but there are some other easy assignments and an easier final to make up for it.
Hardest class I've taken, counting upper divs. Intro class but isn't taught like one. Jim's funny but lectures are absolutely useless and tests are unreasonable. We learn basic concepts and practice the course pack problems on our own, which is fair, but the tests q's are all tricks, exceptions, etc. W/o the curve I wouldn't have gotten an A.
Material was way lighter than past macro/microeconomics classes I've taken. Exams were even easier than the material and extremely straightforward. Also curve is generous because there's a bunch of Haas wannabe bozos in this course that bring the test averages down. If you're even semi-locked in then this course is a free A.
Jim was amazing! I wholeheartedly recommend his classes. I waived Econ 1 with a HS course, and Jim made 100A fully understandable even though the last time I took econ was a year ago. Do the coursepack and pay attention to more abstract ideas he mentions during class for the essay.
I took this course over Zoom during the summer; it was hard to stay engaged in class but I attribute that to the medium more than the professor. He was funny and engaging and did a good job of explaining most concepts, although some were still a little unclear (class moved quickly). Tests are more concept than math heavy.
Concept HEAVY. Be sure to understand the underlying reason why for each topic. If you are cramming for midterms, skip lectures and go straight to the coursepack.
A terrible professor all around. The lecture material is not helpful to the questions on the midterms. He asks far too conceptual questions for an intro to economics course. The midterms are also graded extremely unfairly. The course pack questions (same as midterm) has no resources or help in how to answer them in a way that would give full credit
Took his class over the summer as a synchronous, online class. Lectures were interesting but not totally comprehensive, his lecture notes tended to include additional studies/data not mentioned in class. The final (essay and written portion) made up 50% of the grade, but homework assignments (reading responses & presentation) were leniently graded.
Straight up worst prof I've ever had.. Not only are his lectures completely irrelevant to the midterms, but he is very terse and passive-aggressive in his responses. Also I was rly sick for the final and I asked him about the bathroom policy and bro's like "idk man i don't have time for this." Good grade dist but does not care about students at all
This is NOT an easy class, but there's a lot of opportunities to boost your grade + it's curved. Lectures aren't really too helpful and I thought this class was too conceptual for me. The coursepack is helpful, but I found that the practice problems and exams were easier than the actual exams themselves. Go to the SLC and grind the coursepack.
Really loved Campbell's intro to econ! His course is extremely organized and he lays out everything you need to succeed at the start of the semester. Use his course pack – I got more than 90% on every exam just be doing the exercises of the weeks included in each midterm. He gives great lectures and the courses is a great survey of econ @ Berkeley!
An incredible and insightful lecturer but the lecture content doesn't pertain to the midterms. Do course pack to prep for midterms. Midterms are conceptual, and difficult, but I found them to be graded generously. Final is easy. Lectures are recorded and available online.
Great guy, really makes himself accessible to students, even in a class of 500+ kids. BE WARNED: midterms are extremely concept-heavy. I studied like crazy for all of them and only got an A on 1. Final exam (2 essays in 2 hours) will carry your grade + he changes grading bins. Definitely a challenging class that will test you, so put in the work.
Jim is one of those genuine teachers at Berkeley who puts every effort for his students to understand concepts. Kind, conscientious, and compassionate he reminded of my high school teacher who got me interested in Econ. Thank you for helping me find that joy in learning 🙏🙏.
An amazing lecturer and just a solid guy in general. His lectures are very applicable to the real world rather than spitting out word problems without context. Although his lectures are captivating, they do not help you with the midterms, just jam all the course pack problems and you should be okay.
Best prof I've had at Cal, very passionate about the subject & lectures are interesting, some simple math. Weekly readings that can be interesting & make sure to participate in discussion, that's how I learned the most. Midterms are short but not too bad (lec & course pack problems). Final: in-person essays. Worldly applications, Recommend!
Campbell's lectures were very interesting and I learned so much in his class. Do the course pack and go to the lectures, and you'll be fine. Great guy wished I had the time to get to know him better and go to office hours.
3 midterms, lowest score is dropped. he brought down the grade cutoffs so thats how I was able to get an A at a 91.83%. genuinely a funny and sexy guy - god I love the Irish. make sure to do all the reading responses and practice essay assignments - it can be the difference between an A and a B. He does not round! Not an econ major but it was fun!!
An amazing professor all around. He's funny and very engaging. I recommend going to lectures even though it's not mandatory. You definitely need to study for exams to get an A. Exams focus on understanding rather than memorization. Taking this class actually made me like economics. If you put in the work, it's an easy A.
He's a good professor, I honestly wish his lectures were a tad faster because sometimes he goes on the same point for too long. But a good teacher overall.
He's a nice dude, his lectures were interesting. Exams were fair and the final was straightforward.
He definetly knows his stuff but he's pretty bad at teaching. The fact that econ majors have to score well in two of his courses -- both of which are poorly taught -- in order to actually declare is criminal. Get rid of him.
The classes are engaging, and it definitely helps if you go to lecture. Having 3 midterms is a bit annoying, but the lowest one is dropped and the final is an essay so it evens out in the end.
his econ1 class is so lit. hes a v good lecturer and entertaining too. as long as you go to lecture, participate in discussion and do the course pack problems its an ezy A. professor campbell's grading system is super clear and is made to help you. if you have some econ knowledge before this class will be chill
Awesome Prof. He genuinely cares about his students. He also has great and interesting insights academically.
took this class online over the summer--one midterm and final and both are in person which I think is fair. as long as you spam course pack Qs and visit OHs for further clarification you'll be fine. both prof and GSIs are very willing to help. only thing i found annoying was at least one topic in each exam werent covered in lecture or course pack
The only thing is that there are 3 midterms which makes this class a little stressful, but the exams were pretty fair. You get one drop as well. He is a pretty good lecturer and I liked that the final exam style is essays rather than MCQs
He keeps the lecture entertaining, everything is good, but the three-exam policy is annoying.
He is sweet, lecture is clear, he keeps it entertaining. Honestly one of the only lecturers I have trully enjoyed. However, the structure of the class is really poor. Midterms and PS are quantitative, yet the final is essays. It doesnt reflect at all what you learn in the year. Asks you to go on philosophical rants like Smith or Hobbes. Thumbs up.
cool man. show up + do course pack = 36/40 on midterm. i did fall asleep a few times but tbf it is econ 1...hard to be enthusiastic (or conscious) for the lectures sometimes. other than that, i think he really tries to make econ understandable. pretty easy course, also i think he likes pinball...his course pack has many pinball questions.
An amazing prof who desires to help his students succeed.
Jim is one of the best pure educators on campus. You can tell he cares about teaching and gives his students a blueprint for success via course pack. Lectures are engaging and memorable (found myself regurgitating lecture bits on exams and course pack problems). There's a reason why ugba kids opt to take 100A with him instead of the ugba version.
I LOVE JIM! Super inspirational and clearly loves what he teaches and makes it super interesting. You do have to lock in for this class, but it is not too bad.
never went to class, only did the coursepack before the midterm and aced all of them. final exam is an essay, depends how your GSI is. easy A if you have econ exp like AP micro/macro. jim (james) is also a funny ahh dude and really chill.
My fav professor!! Showing up to class was always worthwhile. I really enjoyed both Econ 1 and 100A because of Jim's entertaining yet highly effective lectures. He does go on the occasional ramble but even those are interesting to hear. Exams test students' ability to think critically using course concepts; he truly cares about teaching economics.
Jim is an incredible all around teacher who cares about his students and it shows. Course pack is a path to success in his courses. Do the problems and you will succeed. GSI teams are organized and sections are useful, though I skipped most of them. Final is essay. He also plays some niche edm pulls if you show up before class (four tet alt, etc)
LOVE LOVE LOVE Campbell. Took his Econ 1 class and now his Econ 100A as well. Incredibly straightforward, provides you with all the materials you need to succeed (course pack), and his lectures are interesting and effective. Go to lecture, take notes, do the practice problems in the course pack, and you'll end up with the grade you want.
Campbell is such a fun professor. His lectures were so funny and even relatable, it was so refreshing to see someone who didn't present stuff in the same boring way. His course pack quite literally has everything you need to succeed in the class, so make sure to put some time into it.
