This guy gets all his information off the internet. His tests are impossible. However I recommend going to his class just to laugh at him because he doesn't know what he is doing and mispronounces words.
The material for this course is interesting, its just not presented well. His tests are EXTREMELY difficult but also EXTREMELY curved. It was definitely one of my most difficult classes though.
He can't lecture at all, his info is wrong sometimes, and his tests are really hard. they are really curved though.
He is nice (I missed a midterm, and he let me make it up), but he is a bad lecturer. He makes the most interesting subjects boring. On the plus side, he puts all the lecture notes online. To keep busy in class, count how many times he says 'lookit'.
He is a nazi that can't stop saying lookit !! Drop while you still can!!!
The class was promising, but the way he talks makes you want to FALL ASLEEP!! The class is not interesting when a teacher points and says look it a million times. Not a great lecturer, HARD tests, although good curve...
Listen up...lookit...framework...what? He is boring so I took naps. But he puts notes online so you dont have to go. Tests are super easy. 5 good minutes with Tyler everyday made me want to pull my hair out. If all else fails just go to sleep.
I'd have to agree with everyone else. Most pointless class I've ever taken. He's a nice guy, though.
Carey is not a super clear lecturer but LOOK-IT, he tries. He is very passionate about his work and very concerned about his students. The material is dry but his enthusiasm makes is hard not to WANT to enjoy it. GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS!
He really is nice--but come on HE'S A BUG GUY. so not super intersting and his tests were hard and focused on the details.
He is a really nice guy who genuinely cares about us as students and people. He is one of the most responsive and accessible professors I've had. He goes a bit fast during lecture b/c there is so much to cover. The tests are hard but massively curved.
Jim is the most compassionate teacher at this school. he is only looking out for us and everything is geared toward the students. he is beyond nice and i am glad i had him. lectures are fast but he posts lectures and tests are based off that! not too bad.
LOVED HIM, LOVED HIM!!! He is such a good guy. Read over the notes, do the homework, and you should pass with no problem.
he is an easy easy easy teacher. i am not a hard working students and i did not study very hard for that class and i still get a B+. he gives hw but it is not too hard and help to pull up grade. he is a every nice guy. any way. good and easy teacher . ..
Very good guy but very disorganized and the lecture made me want to shoot myself every day
Lecture completely unnecsasary, makes lots of exscuses. Unorganized
lectures are worthless, as he posts everything he says online, but the info is good. Tests are killer though, so you gotta read the notes. Seems like a good enough guy though.
This professor has to be the best teacher at this university. He tries hard and he makes sure that every fact that is necesary will be presented. His lectures were fascinating and I enjoyed them. It takes a true UCD student to understand Professor Carey.
The man is a God!!! Take this man's class. He saved East Los Angeles from a swarm of fruit flies. He went to Mexico and *cough cough* Look It, he built a giant plant to trap sterile fruit flies, simultaneously saving Los Angeles.failed his tests, still A
Pretty tough tests, but not too bad to pull and A because of the extreme curve. Lectures can be a bit boring, and you don't usually have to go b/c everything is posted on-line..super nice guy, very willing to listen and respond to the students.
This was only Carey's second time teaching Terrorism & War, and it certainly shows that it's a 'work in progress.' Having said that, you'll be hard pressed to find a professor that gives more effort than him, and he really is there to help the students.
i absolutely HATED this class. It was so boring After a while i rarely started showing up to lecture and just studied the notes off the web. Even with the generous curve the class is an overall waste of time!!!
This class was really hard, really boring, and not at all applicable to human development since we spent the whole time talking about med flies.
The class is incredibly boring, as is Carey's book on his medfly studies. But he's a nice guy and is really into the subject. Tests are very hard but with a generous curve.
Nice Guy. Somewhat boring class. Hard Tests, but dont worry because the term paper will boost your grade.

This man knows everything to do with terrorism and War. He will make you think about life in general. His tests are ridiculous, but thats alright because there is an great generous curve. Impossible to fail. I failed all his test, and I got an A out of it. good teacher, hopefully he never leaves
Snore fest. So boring. Tests are difficult if you don't read everything and pay attention to small details. He has a generous curve though. Boring and I didn't really see the purpose of the class, but the old guy really wants you to learn and he does try. The TA, Denise something, was kinda rude.
Class isn't that hard. Learned a lot but could be organized better. Curves on midterm and final are very generous so as long as you go to class you're basically guaranteed at least a B. Other than that the class wasn't that bad.
I was really excited for this class, and it was really dissapointing. There was almost no structure, and most of the guest lectures talked like they were informing middle school students of global politics. Half the assigned articles weren't even on the tests, the midterm and final are completely random.
Overall, definitely not an interesting class to me and the lectures aren't engaging at all so it makes it hard to pay attention in class. Although he really wants his students to learn so you can tell he tries. The tests are fair and there was a nice curve at the end, so all in all, it's a fair class but just not the most interesting class.
Prof. Carey is a really nice man who is passionate about demography and aging. You really sould go to lecture and study your notes. His tests are difficult but he gives a really high curve, so everything works out well in the end. He is fair and reasonable and so interesting to talk to. Overall a great professor and interesting man.
I'm not sure how many HDE majors actually *want* to take this course, but it's not terribly horrible...just kind of boring. Surprisingly huge curve at the end of the quarter...hard tests that are all memorization. It's an okay course. HDE majors don't have much choice since they keep cancelling the other options, meh...
War and Terrorism was a big dissapointment. Do not take this class. I hate to be rude, but you're better off buying a book about war etc. and reading it yourself. Hopefully next time UCD will hire someone trained and knowledgeable in the study of both war and terrorism. Not an entomology guy. I gained nothing of value from this class.
No textbook for course. Only powerpoints, although I think he quit using powerpoints after this quarter. Powerpoints were packed with lots of information that you must know for exams. 3 homework assignments. Generous curve. Easy term paper that is due at the end of the quarter. Pay attention to "take away messages".
Most hde majors take this class because they have to instead of wanting to. It's boring. There is a huge curve and no textbook. The second half of the quarter i never went and i still got a B in the class. So suck it up and hang in there if you have to take this course.
Dr. Carey is such a nice guy. He makes lectures interesting and applies what we're learning to real life. His stories make concepts clearer and he is OBVIOUSLY passionate about the field.
You cannot study enough for the tests; they are very difficult and include much detail. You will feel like you've failed every one, but don't worry--there's a huge curve. Also, this year, he switched to short answer questions, so do lots of memorization. He is obviously passionate about the subject, but tries to get too much info into the class.
No textbook, must attend lecture. Tests are difficult and detail-oriented. Memorize his lecture notes and put a lot of effort into the term paper. I got about a 60-65% on all 3 exams and still got an A. If you miss your grandpa, take his class! He is such a nice old guy.
I LOVED DR.CAREY. he is so nice and really cares for his students. he's a bit hard to approach at first. his tests are some what hard, they are all short answers. I seriously learned what it's like to admire a professor from him.
Hard tests, but a generous curve. Frequent 25-word "essays" that are very difficult (and I am usually a decent writer). He is definitely FAIR, but can be very vague about what he wants you to know for tests. I asked specific questions, and his reply was "Just know the slide material" on numerous occasions. HDE majors have to take him- you'll live.
Willing to help you out. Test are LONG and difficult. If you're an HDE major, its required. Lecture is boring, reads off the slides and says stuff sometimes that's not on slides that's tested on. Failed two midterms and still able to pass class. Generous curve.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Complete waste of time! The Professor and TAs don't know squat about international politics, and his lecture slides are taken from Wikipedia--no joke. Plus, they try to overcompensate for their lack of knowledge by grading ARBITRARILY. And unnecessarily hard. Worst class I've ever taken at UCD.
This guy is an entomology professor and is teaching war/terrorism because he was interested or something. Horrible lectures. Never took them seriously. The order of the films, reading articles, and lectures are random and have no connections. Take home midterm/final.8-10pg term paper. 25 word essays per week. Easy class, but my TA was a huge goober
carey is useless. even though terrorism and war was a movie based class he was hardly even present. the TA's were ridiculous and the grading was very arbitrary and many times unfair. i dont recommend this class. there were random attendance checks when not many students came. take home midterm, term paper, and final.
Dr. Carey is one of my favorite professors at UCD, but HDE 117 is a hard class. There is no book, but lots of slides and notes to go over before a test. The curve helps alot, and if one does well on the paper, they should get a passing grade. Overall, good teacher, but dry subject. Attendance mandatory because he gives (very easy) pop quizzes.
Carey is a nice guy. He tries hard but the class was disorganized. Course does not grade on knowledge of the topic but if you can you cram information in a low word count. TA's from spring '10 were a joke. I don't recommend.
Carey is a nice guy, but his lectures are HORRIBLE. He is constantly all over the place, ridiculous. Got a 50% on the midterm. Mini essays are super hard. Got a B in the class, failing everything.
Your grade in this class is about 60% effort/knowledge of the material and 40% random. I feel like there's a lot of arbitrary grading that goes on, but I still enjoyed and learned a lot from the guest lecturers. Still, I wouldn't recommend taking this class until kinks in the grading system are working out.
The first midterm was very hard (life tables) The curved helped alot! The weekly25 word essay were graded harshly. Quizzes were easy made you read since they were every week pretty much. . I liked the subject but boring at times. he is super nice. I liked the class. There was a paper which you have all quarter to work on (topic is up to you)
Ridicolously good curve...got an A but was asleep most lectures. midterm and final are now multiple choice. Give a modest effort on everything and you will be more than fine.
Ridiculously good curve. Got an A but was asleep most lectures. Midterm and final are now multiple choice. The subject matter is dry and Carey can sometimes lack organization, but if you give a modest effort you will be more than alright
seriously, failed everything and got a b in the class. very very generous curve. mini essays super hard, quizzes everyday of class so hw/attendance is mandatory. the tas are useless as they never show up to the class ( i dont even know who they are). one midterm and one final and one term paper. wow. and i used to like hde.
Dr. Carey was great! The weekly online quizzes made things much easier to remember when the midterms came along, though the term paper was not the easiest. But Carey was very passionate about this subject and it made class more interesting, as did the weekly skypes. Easy to get a good grade if you put some effort. I recommend this class!
Take his class!! He has weekly online quizzes that are easy if you go to class and have notes. Weekly writing assignments that keep you on track. Weekly skypes professionals that make the class more interesting. Expects a lot from term paper, but can get a decent grade if you try. Tests are easy if you study. Overall, very good teacher and class.
weekly quizzes were awesome! I loved the lecture material even though I felt a little confused about what the overall theme of the class. definitely open to helping out the class and changing things if students don't like them. very nice guy
If you don't like online classes don't take the class. Although we did have lecture everything was online. We watched youtube videos instead of going to class for about half of the summer session.
Nice guy, tough teacher. You can tell he cares about the subject and really tries his best but he asks way to specific questions and the class is SO DENSE. Lots of details and expectations although he states to "not focus on the details." It is impossible to intake all the information he gives. Hard class and requires a lot of attention.
Challenging, hard, and requires MUCH attention (should be a 5 unit class). Lectures are PACKED with information, yet he tells us to not focus on the details - but the first midterm was all details. Expectations are too high for the paper, and he gives weekly quizzes that don't help at all for the midtermfinal. The subject matter is similar to 100C
Really hard tests with some questions that don't apply to the class. He doesn't test on concepts, just facts (he asked what school an interviewed person went to). Weekly quizzes and assignments that are easy. Term paper. No textbook. He's curt but knowledgeable. Half the lectures are cancelled and put online instead. Lectures are packed with info.
His lecture slides are so confusing that it makes studying for his tests very frustrating. He clearly loves to do research, but is not the best lecturer. He grades on a curve, but his tests are so frustrating, be sure to start studying early.
Really nice professor. Lectures are too detailed for his tests, which are repeats of daily quizzes. Daily quizzes and hw forces you to keep up with work. Got a D on my midterm, but it got curved to an A and placed 41 out of 255 students. Really passionate about his studies so I super respect that. Long term paper that is really open ended. :)
There is one midterm and a final. You really need to pay attention to details from the lecture notes in order to do well. There are weekly quizzes and writting assignments that help you prepare for the paper that's due at the end of the quarter. Required to write a 2,500 word paper on any topic about longevity. Just do the work and you'll be fine.
I seriously hate this class. Some of the exam questions are irrelevant and can be down to the littlest detail. The homework are graded on how well you can write a sentence to his liking (like why? this is not an English class). He also assigned weekly readings and videos to watch and will nitpick random questions from them to be on the test. :(
He goes by slides super quickly and reads off of them, sometimes he briefly explains some slides. His homework is based on how well you write a "35 word or less" sentence about the super boring articles and videos. You never know what to expect on his exams and test you on the minuscule details about random topics. Curve is nice.
WORST. PROFESSOR. OF. LIFE. Goes way too fast in lecture, and his lectures are very disorganized. Assigns way too much work outside of class b/c he considers it a hybrid class. Tests are a joke. Questions don't test knowledge at all, and instead asks trivial questions on details from readings and videos. Honestly the worst professor I've ever had
This class was tough. He assigned lots of videos + readings outside of class, which can be annoying. There were 2 MTs and 1 final (non cum). The last two exams were 50 questions and only 50 minutes to finish. Although I can see the frustration of other students below, this is still a doable class. Received a B- without a curve& end up with an A.
Dreaded coming to this class, 50 minutes felt like hours. Literally everyone fails the exams, but he curves them. Unfortunately, you don't know your actual grade till the end of the quarter because of the curve. Very specific questions on exam. For example, he asked what word was used at the end of an article. Listening to podcasts is a must!
You can tell that he's clearly passionate about longevity but it just doesn't translate in this class at all. Lecture slides are dense and the tests are a complete mess. He'll tell you "don't worry about the small details", yet he'll ask you to remember a specific word from a quote in his journal (how is that relevant?). Curve was better than most.
You don't have to go to class because he posts podcasts of his whole lectures, but you have to do every single reading, memorize every single word for his tests, and be able to do 50 multiple choice in 50 minutes. Class average midterm grades are 40% and he curves. Lectures are dense and incredibly boring. AVOID.
SUPER generous curve. I got Ds on every single exam but ended up with a final B for my grade in the class. He is passionate about teaching, but attendance not necessary, lectures available online. Assigns term paper from day 1 and due at end of quarter. Even if you don't do well on exams, do well on other things and you will pass.
The lectures are very disorganized and dense. He is very passionate about his work and his lectures which is great, but he can not teach information effectively. The exams are extremely detail intensive, yet he says not to focus on details during lectures. He has a generous curve which saves your grade in the class. This class is very challenging.
SAS 7V is an online course that has obviously been used an recycled over many years. Some current events are used, but it is evident that most of the course material is old. Lots or reading and MT and final are online, but timed and barely enough time is given to answer the questions. Term paper and weekly quizzes are standard, no curve.
Carey is not an effective lecturer, he rushes through slides and is not coherent when he is presenting the information. You need to do the readings to do well on his exams and expect a generous curve on the midterm and final. Your weekly homework and essay grades will depend on if your TA is a tough grader or not. I failed both tests and got an A-.
Carey is the WORST professor I've had at UC DAVIS! I'm not sure why the school still allows him to teach with all these negative reviews. You would think he would at least take the feedback he receives into consideration. Rushes through the slides without elaborating. This is pretty much a self-taught class with a fat curve.
Carey cares a lot about the material he's teaching, but it was hard for me to feel the same. His lectures feel VERY long and are full of little details you'll need to memorize for exams. You won't do well without religiously reviewing his slides and homework content. Fortunately, the curve is very generous-- I had a 74% and ended up with a B+.
Do not take this class if you can avoid it. I took it thinking it would be fun and interesting and it was neither. Lectures make very little sense if anything just go because he usually gives extra credit at the end of class. It is very unnecessarily difficult and you learn very little. One of the worst classes I have taken.
He's definitely a sweet guy, and he will go out of his way to help you out if you can make it to office hours. But his tests are impossible (average of 50%). You have to memorize the details of his lectures to do well on exams. He does curve though, a lot, and if you do well on hw and the essay, you'll be fine
Carey is very passionate about what he does but covers a lot of content and expects you to memorize many details for the exams. Tests are extremely hard (he said 9.5/10 difficulty) and average around 50%. You work on a term paper the whole quarter which is 25% of the grade. Huge curve at the end and only fails you if you don't submit the paper.
I only went on the first day and the exam days. The class has a really big curve and you can choose your topic for the term paper. Really great class for easy units.
His material is understandable and not hard but his tests are very specific. The averages for the exams for 60% but he does curve depending on the average. There is homework due every week but its a small writing assignment. If you attend lecture there are times where he will have extra credit quizes and you can receive extra credit at the end.
This class teaches you more than just the material - Professor Carey does his best to instill organization, conciseness, and thoughtfulness in his students. He is very clear about his expectations and offers every opportunity to be successful in his class. However, do not expect to skate in his class. He will make you work for it but he is fair.
Took this class for online summer session and basically, if you turn in everything and even fail the exams, you will still get a C at least because there is a huge curve at the end of the term. Barely learned anything, lectures were hard to pay attention to, expects very specific things. If you want a better grade, you have to work extra hard.
Professor Carey is NOT as bad as these reviews make him out to be. He has his style of teaching that he likes to stick to however, in light of COVID and abrupt online teaching, he has been very lenient and understanding of his students. He got a lot of criticism this quarter and was 100% open to hearing it and making changes.
Dr. Carey wasn't a bad professor, but I think the clarity of his teaching was more complicated than it needed to be. I took him during Summer Session so everything was shortened, it just felt like there were easier ways to explain things.
Weekly assignments' word limits were annoying especially when TA comments back a confusing response. Carey himself was thankfully willing to take any criticism of time limits of these weekly assignments and had a grade curve implemented in the end. There's a lot of material and knowledge required, but if you do the work you are likely to pass.
By far the worst professor I have had in my three years of education here at UCD. His class isn't difficult per say, but his lectures are monotonous. Say's not to worry about details, but will ask the most specific questions about lecture. Sets unrealistic time limits for quizzes (10 questions for a 7 min quiz). The only good thing is the curve.
Professor Carey is a very knowlegable and smart professor. The course isn't easy but it is very doable. Lecture heavy, but not a lot of tough material. Work on term paper and you will do fine. I would definitely take him again.
Prof. Carey is not horrible. He is always willing to answer questions and is extremely passionate about longevity. Topics are interesting, however the downside is that there is a lot of information to digest. Lots of extra credit opportunities. Writing assignments are graded semi-harshly. Take this course if you're up for a challenge.
Everyone is too harsh to the professor. He is defiantly a brilliant and approachable professor. Exams are not easy, you have to study hard, and the essay required lots of time. On the other side, it was a great chance to write a professional paper. If you want to get an A, choose another course, but if C or B is acceptable, go for it.
The exams were almost entirely short answer/essay based. Never enough time for quizzes or exams. There was a massive paper with at least 10 sources and 25 FOR EXTRA CREDIT! He made us watch a video that was over an hour just about how to format our essay. Because of the curve, I went from having an F to a B. So many people failed this course.
This class is great if you want professional writing experience. Interesting subject, tough tests/grading, and definitely a challenge. Prof Carey is very knowledgeable about the subject matter and is helpful during office hours. Big curve and lots of extra credit.
Professor Carey was a great professor, he is very passionate about his job which translates to his high level of engagement with the class and his students. The course was definitely challenging, but he is very generous with curving grades. As long as you study and stay on top of the term paper, you will do well!
Professor Carey is very passionate about what he teaches. There's a big term paper. Homework isn't that difficult. It can be challenging at certain points but there are lots of opportunities for extra credit. He also provides a study guide that contains actual questions on the tests. Use that study guide and with the curve, you'll do great!
One final, one midterm, and a large term paper. His lectures are long, dry, and monotonous (but that may be due to the content). I didn't learn anything about humans at all, just lifespan and death and causes of death. The midterm was so hard and the class average was a 46%. Weekly in-class mini essays that he grades harshly and the TA doesnt help
Probably the worst professor I've ever had. He's an ineffective lecturer who drones on the entire class, often going on tangents that have little to do with anything. He requires too much formatting on the essay, to the point that you spend hours trying to figure it out. His midterm average was a 46%, which is insane for HDE. DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS.
this class was so difficult and insanely off-topic (human longevity). All of the content is about anything but humans. Midterm average was a 46% and he uses AI like a crutch to teach. Lectures are dry, the TA doesn't do anything, and confusing grading criteria. If this is the only class you care about you can get a B-.
I went for help in office hours of TA. He clarified all my doubts in detail taking out time. the professor is knowledgeable and helpful. good curve too.
The professor was quite nice overall and the TA also helped us.
Good professor, wisdom drips from his eyes TA was decent.
Professor is very knowledgeable and understanding. The curve helps a lot!
Good professor, very knowledgeable. Decent TA.
I absolutely loved the course and Professor Carey. No strict deadlines on assignments.
Professor is open to ai which Is a good thing. Very open and accessible.
Prof knows a lot. Lenient curve. Ta helpful. No hard deadlines. Would take again.
I enjoyed this course very much. The professor was super chill. I've reached out to the TA quite a few times, and they've always been super helpful. I also appreciate how quickly the TA respond to emails, clearing up all my doubts. Overall, the experience was great!!
The course was straightforward and easy to follow. Just stick to the professor's instructions, and you'll do well. The TA was incredibly helpful and friendly. I also found him very cute!
Best professor ever, so sweet and down to earth!!
