Very boring, very hard to understand, and class seems like a waste of time.
He sucks.
More than half of the class dropped for a reason. You will be teaching yourself Calculus! I strongly urge you to stay clear, I wish I could go back and do it again!
He is a very easy teacher who has only like one assignment due every week on fridays but hes boring as hell and grins at you like your stupid. Id still recommend him though bc he is easy
ok, so the other comments are comically correct but he is a nice guy!
Be ready to teach yourself calculus. This guy is confusing as hell. He wont answer question right and will confuse you more. Buy a TI-89 and you'll get an A.
You go to class and watch him play on this computer.Bring other homework to do in class, make friends smart people and people who have tutors, write as much as you can on exams because he gives alot of partial credit. I did this and got an A.
Not the most lively lecturer but his dry sense of humor does liven things up a bit if you are perceptive enough to pick up on his subtle jokes. He explains the subjects well, but if don't get it the first time, you are out of luck.
Not very clear on his points and the context of the mathmatical processes he talks about, but for actually workload you have maybe 3 assignments and 3 (very simple) tests all semester.
this guy cracks me up...tells horrifically unfunny jokes and smiles stupidly at the class...got an A with great ease, but the teacher is just on another planet!
Don't take this prof! Probably one of the worst teachers I have ever had!!
you teach yourself calculus if you get this guy. I have a 101 tutor, go to math labs, and get help from friends and I sometimes feel like I'm hanging on by my nails and teeth to get what's going on. Some days, he might as well be speaking greek.
This teacher does not know how to teach. Get ready to be bored and have no idea what is going on. He never explains the problems.
Do NOT ever take this teacher. He is extremley boring and all he is does is mess around with his computer.
Awful. Doesn't give examples, takes 30 minutes to explain one thing because he pauses so often, tests cover material several chapters ahead. I withdrew from this class to take a better prof next semester. Avoid him at all costs.
Be ready to teach yourself calculus, he never explains anything in a simple way. If you haven't had a lot of calculus before, beware, he skips steps all the time. The book is easier to understand than him.
He is very unreliable, doesn't know what he is talking about. Gives tests that are very hard, over material tha has not been covered yet. He, has a huge beard, and a very monotone voice, you will fall asleep.
If you have never taken calculus before, do not take him. You will get loss from the beginning of class and you will leave that class without gaining anything. If you have taken clac, then you might do fine, but I still would not recommend him.
He is a worst teacher ever had. Make sure you bring extra pillows to the class. It is not worth taking his class.
worse teacher i've ever had! he assumes everyone already knows what he is talking about. do not take him if this is your first time taking calc!!
This man is Chinese Water Torture personified.
Carlson...well...he tried. He tried so hard...if he had just given us calculushelp.com in the beginning, I wouldn't have needed to bother my dad to help me find it. I learned more there in two days than in a whole semester.
Terrible. When i asked for help, he actually told me to do better and I would get a better grade.
absolutely horrible, dont take him unless you were very good at calc in your old school, not just pre calc but actual calc. he sucks!!!
DO NOT TAKE CARLSON!!! I swear he speaks another language!! I think he knows what he is talking about...? But he CANNOT communicate it to students.
If you have taken calculus in before in high school, you should be fine, just bring your notes from that class with you. If you have never seen calculus in your life, Carlson is the wrong teacher for you. The notes are impossible to understand, and if you look in the text book, that really won't help you too much either.
Presenting Penguin Beard!...he puts the applied in applied mathematics. What's the best is the kind of stuff he applies it to. Burritos, ... yeah, mostly burritos. It's rediculous. You learn nothing from the notes, but the 'book' clarifies everything. A great and easy class to take in the morning when one is most suseptable to cheesey humor.
he seems nice but you can't understand a word he's saying. he doesn't take role but going to class doesn't really help anyways. and he TRIES to be funny...
I would not recommend that ANYONE EVER take this professor if they can help it. JUST DON'T. In the end I did ok, but it sucked getting there. He's a little weird (which was not the problem at all), but he just doesn't teach clearly at all.
I feel really2 bad for this guy. He's very nice but just out of this world boring! Math 201 is stuff taught in high school, so really there's no need to attend class. Pretty easy too, my high school math was harder. Didnt really study for this class and got a B+. Take him if you dont care about not learning anything coz u really wont!
This is quite possibly the worst teacher that I have had in my entire life. He never explained the concepts of the material. A complete and utter waste of my time. As long as you have had algebra and maybe some calc in HS, the first half of the semester will be fine. However, then you start getting into stats and probability...a complete nightmare.
Easy, but a waste of my time.
Dumb professor, boring class. I transfered out because I could stand his teaching style or lack there of. Also his voice annoyed me.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! That's all that is needed to say.
Easy class, horrible teacher. Applied is easy no matter who you take, but it was just annoying to have to walk to the old gym 3 times a week to sit in the back and sleep. He is hard to understand and is extremely boring to listen to. take someone else!
He's so bad, he's good. He is a horrible professor but he's very funny to watch. Kinda like a train wreck. But the class is easy and I'm sure there are easier teachers but if you're entertained by kooky professors than this guy's you're prof. He makes me laugh at least.
Carlson is hilarious! The guy is just a goon. He made our class watch a cartoon that had no relevance to class. He is a pre-pubescent child trapped in a 50 year old math teacher's body. I would take him again just because it is so easy to get good grades in his class. Just do the homework and get C's on the tests and you will still get a B+!
Carlson is whack man. He pretty much assumes everyone is there because it's a core requirement. The class is very easy. Just turn in the homework and study for the test the night before and you'll be fine. He tries to tell jokes sometimes, but most of the times they just result in an epic fail.
Carlson is absolutely ridiculous. The class itself is pointless and you really don't have to go. You can copy all the homework out of the back of the book and his practice exams are almost identical to the actual exam. I go to class once a week and still do well. He's boring, but easy.
This was *THE*worst class I have ever taken! The man does not know how to teach and when he does attempt to teach he is incomprehensible. You will do fine in this class if you can teach yourself. I have never been a fan of math, but after this experience I don't want to step foot in another math class. He consistently lost assignments.DONT TAKE HIM
Pretty horrible teacher, not a tough class if you're good at math, especially statistics...
AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!! The guy is nice enough but a HORRID teacher. He mumbles to himself and makes awkward eye contact. Assigns way too much homework that if you copy straight out of the book, you are sure to get a 10/10. If you struggle with math whatsoever, do not take him!
Is this guys handicapped? He is a freaky guy and his class is terrible, did not learn one thing in his class. Everything is online and he tries to make things more accessable but its a FAIL! DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!
So, as far as being a teacher, this guy is the worst I have ever had. He taught nothing, and going to class was useless. If you are an independent learner, and worker, then this guy will be great for you. Another note, he uses a lot of online test, (open note, open book, but very confusing) so if you do not like them, thats something to know.
Get ready to slay some "creatures" (aka equations) in his class. This guy is absolutely hilarious in a quirky way and his class is alright if you like math (which I'm sure a ton of you don't). He will outline the problems (sometimes not always so clearly) if you go in to talk to him. I'd take him again if I had the choice.
he seems akwardly nice and friendly...but just not meant to be a teacher. i have never wanted to kill myself more in a class. it sucks so badly. get phong.
He is kind of difficult to understand. As long as you turn in your homework, which are easy points and do the study guide before tests you will do fine. The study guide is literally the same thing as the test so just learn that. He is a nice teacher to have if you can teach yourself
He's an interesting person once you get to know him. Lectures can be hard to understand. Most of the time Provides the answers to worksheets to check your work. Pop Quizes every once in a while, if not every class. If do all homework then you'll be ok. He'll always be there for help. Has long office hours. If actively pay attention, class not hard.
He has absolutely no ability to teach whatsoever. I had to learn almost the entire class material from a friend, who was able to explain 2 weeks of work in probably 30 minutes. Finally, anyone who can bear to pay attention to his monotonous lectures will have to try and figure out what he is saying because he makes no sense.
Unfortunately, he's the only one that teaches Applied Calc. If you've never taken calculus before, you'll end up teaching it to yourself. Personally, I did just fine in the class, but it's because I took two years of calc before taking the class. Just be prepared for having to get a tutor.
HORRIBLE TEACHER. Unfortunately, he's the only one who teaches the class. The class if very easy in the sense that he provides answers to the homework online. His quizzes and tests are easy, but the final is kinda hard. Be prepared to teach yourself.
I loved Dr. Carlson. Very easy to copy homework and get help from him. Homework a vey easy 5 pts even if you dont finish it. towards the end you realize he cant teach, but he does offer help on skype before each test and he is very helpful with office hours. He can be boring, but try to take notes in class vs. texting/facebook
Carlson is much easier then Mallenby. He gives an easy 10 points almost everyday in homework if you attend class and occasionally there are quizzes, but most of them are with partners. Go to class, do the homework and the practice exams and you should come out with an easy easy B
Carlson makes no sense. He is terrible at explaining things and he is extremely boring. Everyone sits on there computer the entire class. He likes to scream the most random things, like "to infinity and beyond!" he should retire though, he makes a lot of mistakes when correcting tests and is sometimes wrong when explaining things.
He is an interesting character who might not be able to explain everything perfectly, but the discussions make you learn the class material. He is funny and congenial. I would recommend taking a class from him.
He does not explain material well. I had to teach myself and ask others. Got A's on 4/5 tests and a B+, An A in his class is a 95%, I got a 94%.I did well on the final and got a B+ in the class. Easy B because just going to class and doing the hw will give you a C, so trying on tests gets you a B. B has a big range of how many points you can miss.
WORST Teacher. Didnt learn a thing in his class, but managed to get a B+. You will most likely take him if you're in COBA, but if you look at the practice exams and sit in a good spot in the room you should have no problems.
Boring class, homework is basically straight out of the book and he does not cease to bore you when he teaches the material. Overall, take it because its a core, but just prepare to be bored out of your mind.
Humerous Guy. Most people do nothing in class. DO the homework and youre fine. Very helpful in office hours
Carlson is a great math teacher, despite other comments. Yes, his grading scale allows for little wiggle-room when you want an "A" (95% and above), but his lectures are helpful and he wants his students to succeed. Sit in the front of the room, listen, and do the optional review sheets before tests and you'll be fine!
I disagree with a lot of the comments below. Differential Equations is not an easy class, but I think Dr. Carlson makes it about as bearable as it can be. He explains concepts well and does plenty of example problems in class. Also helpful during office hours. Has a quirky sense of humor, which makes class a little more enjoyable. I recommend him.
Not an interesting class, but so much easier than calc so take it. Do the review sheets, and you should be fine for the tests. Don't have to pay attention in class. If you've already had some pre-calc or calc a lot of the beginning will be review.
Carlson is a good professor. A little quirky but he knows his stuff. Made a challenging course super easy.
Made it so easy to get an A in differential equations. 40% of your grade is homework and 60% come from your midterm and final. And on both midterm and final there is a take-home portion and the in class is super easy. The homework can be a bit challenging but if you spend enough time on it you'll figure it out. Plus Carlson is helpful if asked.
Carlson is a bit weird, but in all honestly his class is easy so long as you've had some precalc experience prior. He puts his lectures on line so you really only need to go to class for the tests. Do the review sheet before the test and you'll get an a. easy class, take him!
This class usually isn't taught by Dr. Carlson, and he had trouble developing the curriculum for the class. We never seemed to get anywhere and lectures were often redundant. Advice: 1) go in for office hours; 2) find the right book version; 3) stay off Reddit. The class mostly deals with MIPS programming, so don't expect to do much with hardware.
Creighton's Math Department is not the best, but I have to say that Dr. Carlson is not the best teacher I've had. That being said, I found his class achievable, which is saying something because I wasn't that great at math. I believe he is the only teacher, but you're not screwing yourself over by taking this class.
I dont know about everyone else here, but when I took this class it was all online. Tests, quizzes, homework all could be done outside of class with help from friends, calculator, and websites. He dons't teach the same material presented online in class but he is pretty chill and its a great easy morning class.
Easy class if you can teach yourself from the online book- all the tests and homeworks are online which is easy and that's the only way I learned from view examples. He's a nice guy but he just can't teach. You can do other work in his class and after a while he stops taking attendance.
I loved this class and I was terrible at pre-calc in high school. The homework and tests are all online; with each homework question there is an example next to it showing exactly how to work it out. You can redo it until you get a 100. It's the epitome of working for your grade. Not the best teacher, but it's a fairly stress free class for Calc.
Carlson's class is a pain to sit through. Literally, there was a sea of laptops all around us- you can't take math notes on a computer! If you want an easy class, this is it. If not, take another teacher or a different class.
He is not very clear, terrible jokes, nice guy though. If you have ever taken Calc 2, you will be fine. If you are good at teaching yourself, you will be totally fine too. But, if you struggled with Calc 1, don't take this class. All hmwk online. no book needed. Tests are easy as hell though. Match the homework problems exactly.
Dr. Jimmy is with out a doubt one of the most boring teachers at Creighton, but i absolutely loved his class! its easy enough that you can teach it yourself. Dr. Jimmy is so funny and a nice, it was a very enjoyable experience. strongly recommend
i essentially took this class in high school and still struggled because all everyone does in class is play on the internet. he teaches the class backwards so it makes no sense without prior knowledge and you have got to take Fong.
If you took Calculus prior to taking this class then it will be an absolute breeze for you, if you don't have prior calculus experience I could see how it would be really hard. He's not very good at explaining things but will always stop to clarify something. Basically if you already know calculus and just need a class TAKE HIM. He is weird though
I do not understand any positive ratings for this professor. The homework was a joke, his lessons were unclear and often did not make sense. He gave the low grades on a test up to 25 points on a "curve", but did not touch the scores over 50%. Do not take his class if you value your sanity.
He is very boring and doesn't really teach, but talks at you. You have to teach yourself if you want to do well in the class.
I have only taken pre-calc in high school before taking his class and this is my easiest A this semester. If you do the homework and take notes during class theres no way you can't pass this class. His lectures are a huge bore and can be pretty confusing but read the textbook and you're fine. He's also an easy grader. I would recommend him.
If it wasn't for high school AP Calculus, I would not be doing fine in this class. Dr. Carlson literally is a slow teacher, is not clear, and does not make sense at all. If it is your first time taking Calculus I, do not take Carlson because you will be teaching yourself and going in for tutoring a lot. Take someone else if you can!
Had a quiz every Friday. He and the TA walked around the room and helped anyone that needed it. Free 1010 for eveyone.
He's obviously a brilliant man but he isn't very good at explaining things in detail or providing little tricks to help you remember. He doesn't assign homework but you will need your book to understand what you are learning. He will help you if you ask but I would recommend going to tutoring only because he isn't good at explaining things simply.
Dr. Jimmy is a true stud. Not the best teacher though. It isn't a hard class and the number of ducks Jimmy has left to give is minimal. Take Dr. Jimmy he's a cool dude.
If you took pre-calc or Calc in high school and have a decent understanding of it, take Dr. Carlson because you won't have to do much or even show up to get a good grade. If you aren't good at math or don't have previous experience with calc, I would recommend a different teacher as you will be basically teaching yourself a semi-difficult topic.
Carlson is a very smart man, but not very good at explaining information to students. A lot of self taught concepts and reading from the book. Mainly story problems, homework counts, lecture boring, quizzes, one group paper, and he can be confusing in his lectures.
Carlson's class is extremely easy. Showing up to class is only worth it for the quizzes that he gives at random. His tests are easy, as he gives you a review sheet with the exact questions on them. Grades pretty easy and is a funny guy in class.
Most of the learning is done outside of the classroom by you. The entire class is just taking notes.
I know as much about calc as he does.
Very boring to listen and sit through his class. It is hard to read his handwriting when he shows work and is slow and unclear. I had better luck reading from the textbook than sitting in his class and listening to him drone.
Only take this professor if you have a history in Calculus. Class is not mandatory but he gives quizzes and if you aren't there you get a zero. Homework is turned in. Super boring lectures so bring other homework.
He is very boring and explains things in a very confusing way
Carlson is probably the worst math teacher I've had in my life. I want to fall asleep in his class and leaving his class is my favorite part of the day. Be prepared to teach yourself (if you don't already know calc) and go to tutoring. There's a lot of worksheets that he gives the answers to so that helps, but you must do well on the tests to pass.
Okay first of all, Jimmy Carlson is a riot. If you want to laugh watch Blood Circulation 01 on youtube. Second of all, he is the worst teacher I've ever had. I skipped his class half the time and just went to tutoring because going to the class was a huge waste of my time. When I do go to class it's so I can get other work done.
This class is so boring and is so hard to follow along with. Half the time his damn stylus won't keep up with him and the other half he makes jokes that no one understands because he mumbles them and then just starts laughing and gets really loud out of nowhere. Literally beat MW, MW2, and MW3 in that class on my laptop and still have a B.
Class extremely easy. With previous high school knowledge of the basics of calculus, you will get an A in this class with ease. Additionally, without this previous knowledge, with a little studying, will for sure get A-B. My semester did not have to show up to class besides on test days. Teacher is awful, cannot understand him.
Honestly not as terrible as most people think. If you have taken calculus before, this class will be very easy. Lectures are very boring and difficult to pay attention to. Not a large workload, just do the assignments and practice problems for the tests. Enjoyable when Jimmy happens to make phallic drawings.
Dr. Carlson isn't too bad, classes can get boring except when the man decides to yell something or teach with Russian letters... dude can be pretty funny. Assignments are easy points, going to tutoring is the best way to do well. Attendance is not mandatory but he does random quizzes which you will always get 10/10 as long as you are there.
Big Jimbo is a force to be reckoned with. He is one of the best professors I have ever had. He gives you study guides that are very similar to the test and he's got the wit and charisma you need to be a top professor in this competitive math world.
Dr. Jimmy's not as bad as the ratings say he is. Sure, his lectures can run a bit dry, but the classes he teachers (MTH 141 and 201) are so easy it'd be hard for anyone to make them interesting. Still, Jimmy's probably the best choice out of the teachers for it.
I took Carlson for both 201 and 141 and he was a great teacher. He explains things very thoroughly. Math itself isnt very interesting so the lectures were kind of dull but he tries to make them interesting. Really nice guy and a great option for 201 or 141.
He lost one of my assignments at the beginning of the year. I went to office hours to ask him about it, he asked my name and which assignment it was, wrote it down, and then went back to work. With 2 weeks left in the semester, I asked if I could do it again, and he changed my grade. The lesson? Use his laziness to your advantage and you'll be fine
Nope. The lectures for 141 are dry. It's difficult to stay awake in Carlson's class. Nice guy but doesn't explain concepts well. Some pop-quizzes, but for completion. Exams aren't challenging, but you have to know what you're doing. Don't recommend.
This was during the COVID semester so I'm not sure how he is normally, but we didn't really do anything in class. It was more just time to ask questions than teach the material. If you read the textbook the material was super easy. Not a lot of work but the tests aren't many questions so it can be easy to slip up and lose points.
Carlson is an absolute G I had. him for 141 biz calc and 161 biz stats, and almost every single answer to the homework is either a few pages after the assignment or in the back of the book. The quizzes are easy 3 questions max and unlimited attempts the tests aren't terrible. He also walks through just about the entire stats lab in class for you.
Homework is easy 100%, quizzes easy 100%, but tests. . . goodluck. Tests are 75% of the actual grade. So you can seriously get 100% on everything then bomb one test and you're sitting at a C with no hope of improvement. His lectures are incredibly boring, and be ready to teach yourself 99% of the material
he doesn't lecture, avoid him at all costs
You only have 4 exams no homework which sounds appealing at first till you take an exam and you think you know everything and realize you know nothing, because theres no homework theres no way for you to test that you understand the concepts. recommend if you get things super easy and are a good test taker, otherwise run.
No homework, easy quizzes, 4 tests. Your grade is based entirely off 4 tests so study your ass off. His lectures are boring so it can be tough to pay attention (meaning you will have to teach yourself). Not a hard class by any means if you can pay attention in class (good luck tho).
Dr. Jimmy is absolutely hilarious, but unfortunately he's a terrible professor. He posts videos of his lectures and you are expected to watch them outside of class and come knowing how to do the assignment. Multiple quizzes each week as well as many homework assignments. This class is an easy A but you'll have to teach yourself to succeed.
By far the worst teacher I think I have ever had. He moves at such a glacial pace except when you actually need more explanation. He at least attempts to help you if you are unsure, however, he does not do a good job of explaining things. Take anyone else.
Carlson is a good guy with good intentions, but god are his classes boring. Make sure you do well on the tests as those are very important to your grade. He takes attendance by group problems so you dont show up he will take points away. TA's grade every HW so that's pretty lenient.
Dr. Jimmy is a great guy. You can skip any and all classes as he doesnt do a great job of teaching in class so you will have to learn outside of class anyways. If you took calc in high school this is just a way easier version and you will already know 100% of the content in this course. He also cancelled our final.
SELF-TEACHING CLASS! He mumbles, so you have to teach yourself. He grades on participation so you have to show up, but lectures were useless. Very easy class, just do the homework and look over it before tests (3 tests). HW answers are generally on the next page, but if you just copy the answers, you will struggle.
You have to read, take a quiz, and do homework before class, where he answers questions. Also have weekly lab projects. Lectures are slow, structure-less, and monotonous. Exams based on HW/labs and are easy if you look over his provided practice exams (nearly identical). If you're good at self-teaching, it's an easy A, otherwise you'll feel lost.
This professor was so boring that I nearly fell asleep in all of my classes. His labs make no sense and aren't worth enough points to care about, the lectures are boring, and his handwriting is awful. The entire math depart meant at this school is the worst; I pity anyone who has to learn math here.
I took him for MTH141 1st semester and taught myself most of it but you can tell he knows math just not great at teaching it. However I decided to take him again for MTH161 and that was a mistake. I knew and still know nothing about STATS and struggled. The exams are the only thing that matters and if you don't get it then you will probably fail.
Doesn't teach very well and had to learn all the content on my own. For someone whose never taken a calc class, it made it even harder.
This class is a joke. Dr. Jimmy seems like a sweetheart but shouldn't be a professor. You have to teach yourself, everything is a joke except exams. There's no way you don't get 100 on quizzes and hw, but you will fail the exams if you don't take the time to learn all the material yourself. Creighton drastically needs to improve their math dept.
Worst professor I have ever had. Good guy, but should not be a professor at all. Lectures are terribly boring and he is hard to understand, along with his terrible handwriting. He hardly teaches anything well in his lectures so you will have to teach yourself. If you have Carlson for any class, I would recommend switching out for your best interest
His lectures are super boring and you will probably find yourself doing other homework or online shopping or literally anything unrelated to class if you show up. Forget taking notes because his handwriting isn't good at all. If you do the homework and labs you might be able to get by.
Dr. Carlson has a kind heart. Yes, you will need to teach yourself many of the concepts that have been gone over in class. Solution: get a tutor and spend two hours having them walk you through the exam review and how to do every type of problem on there. I will say that many of the bad reviews on here are because Calc is a hard class in its nature
Going to class isn't even worth it. Dr. Carlson's class is self-taught and very test heavy. Luckily the tests are the same as the study guides he posts, so they are very easy if you study. His lectures are painfully boring, and his handwriting is atrocious. The math department as a whole is not very quality.
Super nice man, but bad teacher. From what I hear however, the whole math department sucks so taking him wouldn't be the worst thing, as I found him at least tolerable. Class material is very easy. My highest High school math class was pre calc and this was easier than that
Professor Carlson is a well educated and incredibly smart person, however his teaching style is meant for a very select type of students and if you are not that kind of student then the lectures will fall flat. I was at every lecture, every class, showed up to office hours and I don't know how much that helped me. Teach your self outside class.
Dr. Carlson is o.k. This class was not terribly difficult, but it does require a lot of time to learn the content outside of class as lectures are not that helpful. I recommend Carlson thought compared to other profs.
This guy is a joke. He mumbles when he teaches, his penmanship is awful, and he covers the content way too fast. He wrote his own textbook and then makes it mandatory. Unfortunately, the textbook is awful, just like his teaching. I've encountered multiple typos that make learning for a beginner calculus class impossible. Don't take this Carlson.
Does not teach during class, expects you to watch an hour lecture before each class period that goes over material. You will spend hours of your time at tutoring if you want to understand the subject. Graded on 4 tests and homework, each test worth 15% of grade. Study guides are somewhat similar to test. If you bomb one test you cannot recover.
This professor and class are a joke. About 1/3 of the class actually still shows up to lectures and I understand why, he mumbles on for 75 minutes on his tablet. You will have to teach yourself all the material, but it's not a difficult class. Just do the homework, and labs, and the tests are online. Carlson is the least bad of the math department.
I would try to avoid if possible. Prepare to teach yourself. However, if you have already taken a calc class, you will be fine. His lectures are pretty much worthless and if you know how to do calc, don't bother coming to class. Buy the textbook or be friends with someone who has it for the hw.
OOF! Tough material for me personally and he just isnt'ta great teacher. He is a supper loving and funny guy, like I'd love to sit and get to know him but he just isn't a very good teacher. There is lots of homework which, while worth doing, is a lot of work for the small impact on your grade. Not a great class but probably your best option.
Cares a lot for his students, but isn't super great at teaching. Still probably your best bet for a math professor here at Creighton. He records his lectures, so you can watch whenever, the homework also took me forever and there's a lot of "labs" which are really just group homework assignments. Exams are online with lockdown browser.
I took this class online over the summer, homework takes awhile but the answers are in the back of the book. The textbook itself has a font thats hard to read, but doable. I was able to retake each exam once, and got about a 95 on each except for the last one which I got a 63 on. Didn't really study all that much, just did the homework to study.
you will be teaching yourself
If you are a math wiz, you will be fine in his classes. If you are anything below great at math, you will be teaching yourself and/or cheat your way through his courses. Don't expect much.
Super boring lectures, bases everything off the textbook so kind of have to teach yourself. All tests are online including the final, all homework answers are in the book. Turn in everything on time and you will do well.
No ways to get points back. Only multiple choice questions on tests so no way to get partial credit.
His hand writing is awful, yes you're teaching yourself but his exams are just like his reviews. STUDY THEM. He doesn't teach well but you're required to be in class. Easy if you've taken calc. Hard if you haven't.
Attendance not required - 1% of grade. Just tell someone to sign you in - you are going to be self teaching yourself anyways. Exams were not that difficult as I studied 2 hours to get low to mid 80s while class average is 70s because everyone is so busy complaining instead of studying. Awful teacher but not hard material. 95%.
Professor Carlson was truly the worst professor and teacher I've ever had. Attendance is 1% so just have someone else check you in because going to class is pointless because he just mumbles to himself the entire time. You will have to teach yourself. I strongly recommend getting a tutor or study group, as that's the only way I passed the class.
James Carlson gets too much hate on this website. His class is actually the easiest thing in the world. The grade you get will directly resemble the amount of effort put forth. All you have to do is show up, take notes, and do the work. He is by no means a tough grader and is always willing to work with you if you are having trouble.
Had him for Calc and Stats. Yes his teaching is terrible, but don't listen to the people who barely pass the class. You should easily be able to get a B or higher. All homework is completion and takes up a good portion of your grade. All tests are online.
He is a really nice guy but his lectures are absolute garbage. You will have to teach yourself everything. Definitely get a tutor or go to drop in tutoring. There are usually 2 HW assignments and lab every week. The study guides he gives for exams are really good so definitely go through those for studying.
Lectures and teaching styles are ineffective for most students. However, if you dedicate a couple of hours each week to teaching yourself and reviewing the material, you'll be fine. Tests are straightforward and much easier than the homework. Homework is graded on completion. I didn't show up for class much and ended with a good grade.
Absolutely awful teacher, but thank God you can cheat on every test due to them being alone, and you do not have to attend class. If you are looking to just get your math credits over with and never thinking about it again, and have no qualms with cheating, take this class. Because it is impossible to learn it from him, and difficult toteach urself
I am going to be very blunt, I did not learn anything. Attendance is mandatory, however it is worth 1% of your grade and you can have someone sign you in. The homework is very easy and the answers are in the textbook (which is free) so you can check your work. All of the exams are online on Canvas, so take that as you will.
Be prepared to teach yourself. If you are fine doing that and going to tutoring you will be fine. I found it easier to do that and use the book. I recommend a physical book as the online one is blurry. Just show up to class and use it as a study hall
Im in my first class period with him right now. I already love him.
All exams online
you will have labs to do in any stats class. I use it as a study hall which most kids do. Its easier to teach yourself. Nice guy though!
Basically, the whole class is online, and attendance is a very small portion of the grade, so not many people show up to class. You don't learn a lot, but it's easy.
would not recommend its very difficult to get an A and you basically have to teach yourself everything
Honestly, I don't agree with the bad rap Professor Carlson gets. Yes, he is old and isn't the most engaging in class but he is super nice, and his class is honestly so easy; most people just use his class as a study period. You do have to teach yourself a lot but he is always willing to help. Also, attendance is graded, so show up for easy points.
Dr. Carlson's class is not too difficult but it is almost entirely self-taught. His lectures are incredibly boring and almost no one pays attention; the homework takes a while and has no effect on your final grade; and participation is technically mandatory but he does not check all the time. The tests are online and take home.
Let me start by saying, Carlson is a nice guy. He seems to be a good-hearted old man teaching math; However, the class is tough. It's set up in a way where you need to buy the book to complete the homework, but the text in the book is extremely pixelated (the book was $120, come on). The best way to go about it is to teach yourself.
