Do not take him!

It baffles me that he would ask questions so hard the only way anyone can answer them is to copy the answers. That's not learning.

He has a very difficult way of teaching chemistry and does not use a text book.
This guy is an ****, plain and simple.
One of the best professors at UF!!!!! Dr. Horvath does not use a textbook rather his personal notes which are far better than any text. His teaching style promotes learning and understanding rather than brute memorization.
100% worthless. Learned nothing from both labs. Hard questions in the assignments, he answers it though. TA's may do the scheme for 2046L. So all you basically do is follow the direction, not learn anything. 2046L does not match the lectures. Easy A.

Absolutely the worse teacher I ever had! Impossible to follow and understand. Unwilling to help students. Avoid this professor.
The class was hard, but his tests were fair. What he lectured on was on the exam. He was always present in his office hours if you had a doubt. Scary person to meet, though.
Rude person, the worst professor.

Doesn't use book, has his own pseudobook. What's on the test isn't a suprise or anything, but is so hard to learn. He expects so much more than other teachers so if you can get someone else I highly recommend you do! I was warned and did not listten
he is the worst teacher i've ever had. i studied my ass off and i still couldn't pass his tests. he's a weird guy who thinks he's funny and all his questions are bull. he can kiss my @$$!
this class is sooo easy compared to his class. this is an easy grade because he has nothing to do with the labs except writing the book. the diretions aren't in order. whoever gave him a good rating is on something
Very difficult but excellent explaination of course concepts and expectations for exams. Most students who do not drop end up with an A in the class because you either put in a lot of effort, or you don't do well. Expect to work; you attend UF.
Don't take this guy's class!!! No matter how hard you study you can not do well.
CHM 2045 isn't that bad, but his chem 2 class is MUCH more difficult. Avoid it like the plague. His notes aren't clear and he never follows the book. Tests are impossible.
Exams are VERY hard, and he speaks and teaches at such a high level that its VERY hard to understand what he is talking about. If you get him, GET OUT, switch lectures!

Listen me and my friend (who is taking land or something or other) studied for the chem final together and i showed him a practice final half the stuff his class never did and he got an a in his class, so dont take horvath unless u want to learn extraCHEM
He thinks he is Chemistry God, and likewise teaches from what he calls "correct chemistry." I guess that books endorsed by hundreds of schools nationwide should have a chat with him. Who does this guy think he is?
Learned more in the first 2 weeks than in my entire AP chemistry course
great professor. exams and quizzes are hard but there's so much extra credit offered (exams out of 140, but 192 points possible; quizzes out of 60, but between 85-115 are possible). don't be scared to take him unless u're scared to really learn chemistry
The worst Chemistry teacher ever. Am taking Organic now and his class was useless. Took him for 2045 and got a C then thought oh I'd do better as long as I studied harder but alas with Horvath it doesn't matter. The class avg is low, only repeaters do wel
tough teacher...survivable if u cling to ur T.A. like a fat boy all over cake. Get solutions to old tests if u plan to do well...very tricky questions...he does give grade boosters though
Never will take a class with him again
He is considered 'The Devil of Chemistry' by a lot of students. Don't buy the book for his class, he will send you out to get his notes. He's tough but gives lots of extra credit opportunities on his exams/quizzes. He repeats commonly missed questions.
Horvath is awesome. You will learn chemistry in this class. My guess is that the people who give him a bad rating are people who didn't keep up with the assigned work. He's hard, but he's good.
he keeps you awake with a dynamic lecture and offers loads of extra credit. recommended if you want to learn chemistry and are ready to give it some thought
Don't believe all the bad things you hear, he offers alot of extra credit and makes sure his TAs are there to assist. If you put forth the effort, you really learn alot.
I did the work and was successful in this class. He wants to help and also offers a lot of extra credit; I also liked that he didn't grade on a curve.
Decent and knowledgeable professor who you will learn from as long as you tune in. He is hard, but only dumb people do bad in his class. One of the best profs in campus. A+++++
Nasty class! He is very knowledgable about the subject, but fails to pass that knowledge on to the students. He gives lots of extra credit and still has to curve the class to get enough passing students. He has a high student drop rate (almost 50%).
He is extremely arrogant, makes and teaches chemistry based on incorrect conclusions (and I have spoken to many chemists about this); counter-prepares you for advanced classes. I had to relearn a lot because of him. Out of class, he was inordinately rude.
A hard class, but if you work you will get a good grade. It helps to go to his office hours...he explains things much better there, and he will give you hints for tests. He teaches from his own 'book' that he wrote, so don't bother buying the real one.
He is a great professor to have if you want to work and really learn. Slacking is not an option for Horvath. The only way to earn an A is to count your points and get as much extra credit on the quizzes. I got more points on a quiz than on my worst test!
Best chem teacher I've ever had. PRACTICE his problems constantly, cling to your TAs for dear life, GO TO LECTURE. He was extremely fair, but not very approachable. I worked extremely hard for my A; his class is NOT impossible.
Horvaths lectures were totally pointless to attend. I learned nothing from that class but got an A only bc I had a GREAT TA. The only thing I could do was memorize the practice tests(HARD).Biggest waste of time ever. DONT TAKE IF YOU WANT TO LEARN!
Horvath has a dry sense of humor and a small temper, but hes very dedicated to teaching. His lectures are presented well but its hard to go home and do the problems without reading over his notes.
Like someone already mentioned, MEMORIZE PRACTICE TESTS!!! For CHM2045 Lab, make stuff up! You dont need to write what you observe in lab. like for % yield, you want 100%. Not 95. not 90. not 89. You want 100. The answer is all that matters.
He is EXTREMELY unreasonable!! Makes his exams more difficult than they need to be. The only thing that will get you through it is holding on to dear life to your practice exams...GOOD LUCK..and if you want to actually learn chemistry, GET OUT NOW!
Dr. Jim Horvath...wow. That's one hell of a professor! The trick to doing well in this class is to get to understand the way he operats. Ensure u can answer every question in his practice tests and quizzes keeping in mind that he will change the variable u are looking for in the exam.Simple!
He curves everything- all quizzes and tests. If you get ~50% of the questions right on a m/c test you get a medium to high B usually. Teaches with socratic method which is ineffective in lecture hall. Only recommend for good chemistry students, in which case it's an easy A. Otherwise, avoid
Decent professor-- doesn't teach well-- so if you know your stuff-- its an easy A. His tests are more than fair and are not in any anything new. Study previous exams and get a good TA although Horvath can at times be verbose and boring.
Very intelligent, but doesn't know how to come down to the undergraduate student's level. Study old exams, and you should do well in the class. Even though his lectures can be hard to understand, he gives 52 bonus points on every test, 15 bonus points on quizzes, and 60 bonus points on the final.
Very hard class. Lectures are sometimes good, but usually boring. DO THE PRACTICE EXAMS FROM LAST YEAR!!! Thats how I got my A!!! The new test/quizes are about 80% like last year's. I wouldny mind taking his class for CHM2046.
Terrible, terrible class. I took two years of Chemistry in high school, and almost failed his class. His lectures are incredibly boring, and the tests are hard, and completely different than the "practice tests". If you have him as a professor, drop immediately, do it for your GPA.
I got an A in the class!! Do the practice exam/quizes and you will do fine. There is a whole lot of extra credit in this class, so get as much as you can! My grades started to slip, but the extra credit helped a lot!
Came in with passing AP chem score but took class as a way to refresh my memory for chem 2 and got a D... get out while you can. Studying the old tests can only go so far...he will change all the questions just a little to confuse you. And goes off on tangents. Not helpful or caring towards students
This guy doesn't teach much in class, so there is no use in going to the lectures. It's all about how much you know, even though his tests are nearly impossible.

Oh my Lord, end the pain and suffering. A "C" and I worked my ass off. A "C." Granted, it's passing, but I've never worked that hard and not gotten an "A." Incredibly overwhelming.
Horvath is hard...real hard, but since its curved you have to look at your classmats for you own grade...if they are not so smart/slackers you can succeed, like in my case, otherwise your done...
At first, this class was extremely overwhelming to me. I go to his lectures, but I don't understand one word that comes out of his mouth. But overall, the best way to get a C or better is to study memorize the types of questions on his previous exams/quizzes. That's the main key to passing.

I changed my major over this class! Dr. Horvath is too smart for teaching - he understands the material so well that he cannot comprehend why someone would not catch on right away.
So much extra credit that it makes the class not very difficult. Hopefully your TA does test and quiz reviews. Lecture is nearly useless, go over every problem he says is going to be on the test until you know it perfectly and you should do alright.
AWESOME teacher! Very good lectures, very motivating overall. Likes to tell you that he is very very hard. Instead, tests are only SLIGHTLY harder than other profs and they have a !!!LOT!!! of extra credit that you can bomb all of your tests and do good on one and still get a decent grade.
His exams are so easy; all these other people are crazy. He is super sexy and is very helpful.
I can look back at my experiences in horvath's class and get a good laugh...however, at the time it was complete hell. His exams were near impossible considering the amount of money that was spent on tutors. I still have no idea why CH5 would even be considered a rational answer, nonetheless a SB
His difficulty is all bark and no bite. The numbers don't lie. Compared with all other chemistry profs, he has a VERY HUGE percentage of students who get As - in fact, twice as people get As than any other letter grade. Want to learn? Take it with him. Want to get a good grade? Take it with him too.
I took Horvath for 45 and 46. He is not easy. He actually makes you work. The catch is that you actually have to put effort into the class to do well. One-third of those who finished the class got an A! If you put in the time to ask him if you don't understand, you'll do well. The practice tests are irreplaceable. This is the real deal folks.
horvath is amazing. class is really hard, but you actually learn. if ta holds quiz and test reviews and you work hard it's not impossible to get an A
The chem teacher from hell.
Thanks Dr. Horvath! He forces you to learn the material, and although he is intimidating to talk to, he is very helpful. Use the TA's - you'll need them but his class is irreplacable, esp. for organic. Stuff that was on Horvath's final was on my Organic I final - so Thanks Dr. Horvath! He's amazing!
i always heard people talking so bad about him, calling him the "devil" but really he is a pure genious. he just wants his students to REALLY learn. i rarely went to class or studied and still i got B's on the exams. there's so much opportunity for extra credit on the exams it's hard to not do good. if you attend class and study you'll do even bett
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!!! I was warned and didnt listen. Now I have to drop his class and retake in the Fall. So incredibly hard!
thanks to my AP score made me easier to pull out an okay grade for this class. He cannot teach at all. maybe he knows the mat'l well, it is totally not organized and i had a hard time to understand him in class sometimes he mumbles a lot. oh well.. don't take this class. u'll fail.
Great professor-- with a 60-70% you can get an A. Its not easy and expect to work, HARD but its very possible to get a good grade-- study practice problems and pay attention in class.
Great teacher just wants all his students to really understand the materials. Just learn the practice quizzes and exams and you'll do fine. I got a B+ with out doing my hw and studying the night before the test. Really passionate about his subject. pure genious
Very tough tests but they are fair. Going to class is probably the most important key to success with him.
I disagree with those who say his lectures were useless/boring. They were almost TOO FUN even for a chemistry hater like me because he is extremely enthusiastic and has a sense of humor if you see him in office hours. No coincidence that for test 2 when I went to his office, I got an A but only C+'s on the other ones that I didn't go to office.
worst teacher ever
Best chem teacher ever! The class was a breeze. There is so much extra credit that you can't miss getting an A.
GREAT and EASY teacher for CHM 2045 but might want to avoid for CHM 2046...class averages were VERY high in 2045 but lower in 2046; for that class, take the more straightforward Kaefaber instead.
sucks
terrible teacher, way too ambigious during his lectures. He also forces you to buy his notes for $16. Biggest waste of money because its also ambigious, tedious to read and decipher, and best of all ... it notes everything in abbreviations. My high school science teacher was better than this guy. Rely on yourself, if you want to succeed.

Don't take this class, unless you enjoy long, drawn out death by lecture. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!
for chm2046, horvath is NOT hard. i've heard otherwise for chm2045. i took the class during summer- his exams are almost MIRROR IMAGES of his previous exams. the TA's who grade the exams are fairly generous unless you completely screw up. people who claim he's impossibly difficult probably made little to no effort.
sucks at lecturing but my ta is hot... def not a toss up, he's terrible, although i cant bash him for his enthusiasm
stay away - he thinks he's the father of chemistry
His class makes me want to go jump off a cliff. Avoid him if all possible if you want to survive and pass chemistry.
He made my life miserable
jkhiohi7yg ij oipj9p jk poijiojioiojoijoi l pokiopjmj..... thats what I think of him...horrible
An Ex. of how terrible he is: In the class we have clicker quizzes. We had two the other day and 92% of the class chose the same answer for 1 question and 87% chose the same ans. for the 2nd question. The whole class was wrong. Instead of teaching, he says, "Obviously the whole class isn't studying. Go home and figure out how to find the answer."
His teaching style isn't the best. He goes on tangents, teaches harder stuff (that you don't need to know for the tests) and doesn't cover the actual material on the test. He has clicker quizes that are hard and then doesn't go over them, so you don't learn anything. Very mediocre teacher.
super tough class. do all that u can to aviod. he only teaches advanced stuff that will not be on the exams and avoids the info u need. the t.a.s hardly know what he is talking about. he thinks he is god and critizies every textbook out there. however, practice exams r very very helpful as they r mirror images. READ THE BOOK!!!!
Terrible professor. He goes off on silly tangents that have nothing to do with what will be covered on the exam. Often the tangents aren't even related to chemistry! To his credit, he does try to explain the complexity and nuanced details of topics, but he does so in such a long winded manner that it makes everything more confusing.
look up in the dictionary the word boring and his picture comes up. he si boring and hard. even the other chem teachers say he is confusing and that he comes up with the weirdest questions ever.
Boring, unapproachable, confusing, and difficult to deal with. Make friends with someone who took AP Chem and prepare to self-teach.
My TA for this class teaches better than he does. His tests and quizzes are all very difficult even if you study his "sleeping aid" notes. He talks about planet Ogg often; it seems that he gets some of his material from there. I may change majors because of this. Avoid Horvath!
your choices with this class are either suicide or try to sleep with him for a good grade
He made a difficult class much harder. I think he might be a nicer person inside but he is very hard to approach. I go to the boring lectures every day but I still do not understand him. Every person I've told that he was my professor, he/she gave me a look and said "oh poor thing, good luck..." If he you have him, be best friends with TA.
he's a terrible teacher, he seems like a really smart guy, but a truly terrible teacher. he gives a pathetic attempt at teaching, take any other chm2045 teacher, they're all better, i've been to lectures of theres
GET OUT OF HIS CLASS!!! This man sucks... honestly.. chem is my favorite subject and he almost made me hate it..... I studied so much for his class.. and still didn't get a good grade.. DONT TAKE HORVATH
MY AFFINITY FOR CHEMISTRY HAS BEEN DIMINISHED TO NOTHING!! THANKS TO THIS PATHETIC TEACHER, MY LOVE FOR CHEMISTRY IS NON-EXISTENT. HORRIBLE TEACHER, BORING CLASS. GET OUT OF THIS CLASS, YOU'LL BE GLAD YOU DID LATER!!!
Needs to retire, get out of his class ASAP. By far the worst chem teacher at the school.
Dr. Horvath is not as bad as everyone says, people who complain are just typical pre-meds who what all A's and they probably arent going to get into med school anyway if they cant handle horvath, i cant wait till they have to take radium physics and biochem 2 in med school, they wont last
I had him for lab, and I never met him, but I heard hes not a nice person. The lab is extremely difficult though, and his lab book sucks. It doesnt explain anything, and he expects you to know crap you arent supposed to. Theres no way to avoid it though, just a warning.
Students understands the material covered in the book, but his questions on the tests are just way to difficult, and there's no way you can find questions like his to practice except the old exams. I've done all the study questions in each chapter and there's no questions like the ones he put on his tests. Beware!!!
Here's a little secret about Horvath that everyone bashing him doesn't know: Go to him during office hours! He's a terrible lecturer; he's hard to follow. But that's because he assumes you understand everything he's talking about. Go to office hours with a few specific questions, and he will make you understand them. His tests are tough however
I thought he was a good teacher and he's pretty much brilliant. However, he's a jerk. I had a problem getting the results for an exam back and he was about as rude and unhelpful as was possible.
yes he is a very hard teacher but i figured him out. go to **** and go to the ta office hours. they will sit with you and explain the old exams and answer any questions you have. i got a good grade in the class because i used the resources available to me. people, this is college, you cant get by by using the study habits you had in H.S.
This was the first hard class I encountered at UF. I never really understood anything when he lectured, so you have to go home and study forever. You basically develop good study habits that will help you when you get to organic. Overall, he was one of the best teachers I've had and his method of grading is extremely fair.
Wonderfull teacher, He is sometimes hard to follow but if you read prior to coming to his class you should understand his lecture. He is not what people make him out to be. Great teacher, knows his chemistry, and for those pre-med students he is the best chemistry teacher to get because he will prepare you for MCATs chem portion. Good luck!
Dr. Horvath is for those who want to UNDERSTAND chemistry. Even though I'm not doing well in the class, I enjoy beginning to understand a subject I never thought I could comprehend.
i would just like to say that the exams are ridiculous..study all you want it doesn't matter. The man thinks he is god. he wrote his own book for heaven's sake!...sure he's brilliant and makes you understand but how does that matter if you are gonna fail the exams.
I def, enjoyed his class, I learned so much about chemistry, his tests are unfair though, but then again, he is a good teacher.
worse teacher ever...hes the devil in disguise
He is the worst chemistry teacher ever. No matter how much you study it will be in vain because his exams are extremely hard. You have to be a chemist to pass the exams; the exams are impossible.
I took Horvath as a freshman and hated every second of it. If you have to take 2045, do not take it with him. I am currently a graduate student in chemistry and can honestly say that his teaching style was the worst I've ever encountered.
Dr. Horvath gets an unfair reputation. Yes, his class is hard... but suck it up and learn something. If you put the time in, you will learn a good deal of chemistry. He is very helpful outside of class and curves the class greatly. Great professor
Although I've heard that 2046 is horrible with this man, I found that 2045 is not the torture that everyone makes it out to be. Difficult? Definitely. Does he teach chemistry in a weird method that he believes is absolutely right? Definitely. So would I recommend him? No. Want to have a strong foundation in Gen Chem? He's your man.
Absoutly the WORST teacher I have ever had in my entire life!! His quizzes are impossible. My GPA was a 4.0 before I took him, and I had to drop the class so I didn't ruin it. Stay away from this man at all costs. He doesn't explain anything and makes no sense at all.
Don't get Horvath or you will regret it...that is a promise.
This man changed my life. I was pre-med until I encountered this horrible man. He made me change my major because I failed the class which completely discouraged me from pre-med. Hes a horrible teacher. NEVER take this guys class. He will make you depressed.
This man ruins lives for fun. You might as well give him 400$ and go save yourself the misery that will soon ensue your life. He will stomp you out like a cockroach. He is a bitter old man who kicks books around for fun and laughs in the face of hope. I see him occasionally, and I have a hard time holding back the rage. Godspeed.
i didn't even have him as a professor, but in fall 2005 he made the tests that all the chem classes had to take.. you could definitely tell which questions he made up specifically.. NO one could do them.. even the other professors couldn't do his old exams.. don't take him!
Horvath is not as bad as people make him out to be. He is very nice during his office hours and He is willing to help students who make an effort.
I'm not sure if his style changed or what but when I took his class in fall of 2045, the class average for the first test was a solid-high A! 50+ percent of people in the class got As.
I really didn't think Horvath was as bad as people make him out to be. I definitely recommend reading the chem notes he makes...they're confusing and challenging, but quiz questions model the chem notes very closely. This class is very challenging, but if you do all the chem notes and go to lecture, it's very possible to make an A.
After taking it with K. Williams and getting a D+, I took it again with Horvath and got an A. He actually tries to hold the students' attention and teach them chemistry. He lets you know pretty much what will be on his exams. They are long and hard but they are fair with a lot of extra credit.
People say he's impossible, that he's satan, and they say without exaggeration that his tests are impossible to pass.Clearly people study and get A's in Gen Chem 1 and 2.The people who say he is utterly impossible don't have the mind or the study habits to keep up.That's precisely why they're knocked out of being doctors and engineers.Which is good
get out while u still can, he likes to make tests impossible!!!
Needs to retire. Better at 2046 than 2045 but that's not saying much. Although extra credit is available on quizzes/exams, the problems are long and unclear. On quizzes, there is not sufficient time. Lecture is quite dry and he absolutely loathes technology, making life harder by posting everything on a board rather than putting it online.
His quizzes and exams are hard but the extra credit makes it possible to get an A or a B without too much studying.
Confusing and hard to understand..tests and quizzes pretty hard but with all the extra credit 60% is an A.
I know for a fact that I'm good at chemistry, took 3 years of IB chem, and those that say the people who did poorly as a result of not studying are WRONG. His tests were impossible & the class clicker quizes not even the TAs knew how to do. He's got his own weird ideas about procedure, different from normal chem i learned. BAD teacher all around
If general chemistry makes you switch majors, then you probably weren't cut out for the major. Premed wannabes always whine about Horvath but clearly many people, like myself, do get A's. I am a genius but that's beside the point. Being a first semester freshmen with a declared prehealth major does not make you a premed. Suck it up and work hard.
All of the students that say Horvath is hard don't have any sense of chemistry. So they should not be taking this class anyways. Horvath prepares you for the MCAT, and he is always willing to help during office hours. He is a great man and very intelligent. If you give him a chance you may love chemistry as much as he does.
His tests are very challenging and he acts like he is helping you out with your grade when he isn't really. Missed my goal by one test question. Blah. Introduces material that isn't even gen chem material. I would avoid him. Do-able but if you want to avoid stress, avoid.
I fell in sleep everyday during gen. chem. 1. Why? Because of Horvath. He was incredibly boring and babbled on forever on things that didn't even pertain to general chem. 1. The only thing that saved me in that class was that all of CHM 2045 classes had the same tests. Therefore, Horvath had little effect on my overall grade.
Horvath really knows chemistry. To bad he knows it in a language of his own that very few can crack. If you can crack it, chem with Horvath is not so bad, but before you understand that those sentence fragments on tests really form questions you will be really lost. If you can, avoid him. Some people do not need the MCATs or want to be an engineer.
Horvath knows his stuff, but his class is hard. I'm not a chem major but I got an A anyways. You must come to class if you hope to get a good grade. The class goes at a very fast speed, but luckily you don't need to buy any textbook for it, he'll give you his for free in PDF, and for cheap at Target Copy. If you're a chem major take his class.
Terrible teacher. Not very clear and his tests are ridiculously hard. He's very smart i'm sure, but I have no idea what he's talking about. He's in his own world as far as his lectures go, if you can get into his mind, stay in the class. For the other 90% of you, get out.
OMG!! whats up his ass?? he comes up with stuff that doesnt make any sense...good luck if u ever have him
good teacher really knows his stuff and gives all the help he can to his students, doing good in his class is not hard.
three little letters... RUN......
speaks his own language, tests are ridiculous...the lab is annoying
Horvath does not deserve his reputation at all. He is excited every class to teach, which makes it easier to go. He puts up previous quizzes and tests that are almost carbon copies of the real ones. Get those down and the class is easy. He loves chemistry and he generally wants everyone to succeed.
He is enthusiastic about chemistry and really loves the GATORS!! However, you have no other resource than him. His TA's can't even do some of his work. The old tests and quizzes that he puts out help when studying and similar questions are on the exam but don't let that fool you because there are plenty of things that are changed. Not recommended.
Horvath is a really good professor, he actually knows what he is talking about and really wants everyone in his class to succeed. He knows the subject is hard, so there's an average of 90 xtra credit points on each test/quiz. He puts a lot of resources for studying out and really is helpful in office hours. Hard class, but good for pre-med.

Very difficult quizzes and tests but the posted prior tests and hints cover all the material that's going to be covered. Class attendance definitely mandatory.Very helpful in office hours but very intimidating. For 2046 Lab DO NOT CHALLENGE your unknowns!!!! If your wrong, he takes off an extra 10 pts.
Do Not Take him!!!!
DO NOT TAKE THIS MAN UNLESS YOU HAVE TO. He wants his students to do well and gives plenty of extra credit, but his tests cover what HE thinks chemistry is. He makes his own book which doesn't help you learn chemistry at all. His class killed me.
Pretty much his class is A LOT of work!! You HAVE to go to class and do ALL of the practice tests and quizzes. If you dont get something go to office hours and he will make you work out the prob. on his white board but you will know how to do it!Study in groups too because what you dont know someone else will and go to the CLC.Gives LOTS of ex crdt.
He hates the textbook and makes you buy his notes which are so confusing. I recommend that you AVOID him.
GO TO TUTORING TRAIN! They have all of the old exams & Horvath recycles questions from them! He built in a lot of extra credit for summer term and a lot of people, including myself, got A's without even taking the 4th exam. Go to his office hours with questions, read BEFORE class. HARD material but entirely possible to get an A with hard work!
He's a cool guy if you actually sit down and talk to him. Yeah, the class is not easy but that's what makes it a challenge. He teaches his students how to learn and not just memorize stuff. I took him this summer and I am glad that I didn't listen to all the HORROR STORIES about Horvath. If you're ready to be challenged then he's the guy for you.
TAKE HIS CLASS. If you're looking for an easy A, you're not going to get it, but if you really want to learn this stuff, then TAKE HIS CLASS. He gives you every oppurtunity to make an A, with 6 bonus quizzes (purely extra credit), and ALOT more points on tests than are needed for an A. He knows his stuff, he's a genius, and his lectures are great!
One of the best professors I have had. May not be the easiest class, (well really, not easy at all) but if you work at it, you can get an A for sure with all the extra credit he gives. If you are thinking of majoring in Chemistry, take his class.
For the most part the poeople that complain are those who just don't care and don't put the extra effort. You can get an A in his class easily if you actually read the material and want to succeed. People give up w/ just the notion that he's a horrible teacher. He's not. For the most part he does things to make students understand!
i was so worried about taking this professor with all the horrible horvath stories, but i am really glad i stuck with this class. he is funny in class and relates chemistry to the real world. great teacher if you want to learn. extra credit is given and is needed, test are very difficult, but in the end its worth it.

Dr. Horvath is a very nice man, but his ChemNotes and lectures are very confusing. I started doing better when I quit going to class and started going to TutoringZone. He's kind, wants you to be successful, and wants to teach you chemistry. Unfortunately, he often talks over the heads of his students.
he refuses to use the text book and instead make you buy a special book of notes he wrote. The notes are useless because there are a bunch of questions with no answers so you can't tell if you understand the material. In lecture he goes way too fast and too in depth. wasn't very helpful in his office but getting an A is easy b/c of huge extra credi
Extremely difficult class, but definitely passable--I got an A. Tons of extra credit on tests and quizzes. Read his notes BEFORE class, he doesn't use the textbook. Dr. H knows a LOT about chemistry and will help anyone who asks, but Tutoring Zone helped me IMMENSELY. Not a fun class, but you will learn a lot.
Okay, it's very possible to get an A in his class - I did - but you will almost always need to use the services of Tutoring Zone unless you're a chemistry prodigy. I did enjoy his lectures - I was always excited to listen to him wax poetic about chemistry. Too bad what's on his exams are usually not what he does in class.
Theres plenty of extra credit so theres no reason to not get an A. Just do the Tests from previous semesters to get used to the questions and you'll be fine.
Horvath's the best. Don't need to go to class, just read his textbook on occasions, study it and learn it and it's an easy A with all the extra cedit he gives.
Horvath is a teacher that expects a lot out of his students, however a "B" and even an "A" is very manageable due to all the extra credit he gives. I recommend doing past exams once or twice a couple days before an exam as practice because some of questions are usually similar to the material he'll be testing you on. Overall, I he's a great teacher
it's funny reading past remarks. most of the kids who say bad things are those who are just too arrogant to try and give a crap about a subject. My favorite are the comments about his own "language". Obviously people don't pay attention to the vocab that's necessary in chemistry hence the reason they don't do well. It's a fun class, you got to work
hard class and hard teacher but you learn a lot with him.(unlike other 2046 professors)i would recommend taking him because it really prepares you for orgo. people that complain it´s because they don´t try very hard
Difficult. Expects you to drop all previous knowledge of chemistry due to the large amount of chemistry errors widely accepted by society. ALL of these errors do make sense though. It is a difficult class, but if you study just a little bit and attend ALL the lectures...then you will leave this course far more enlightened and prepared than 99% o
horvath is a great teacher. lots people think his class is really tough with a very high dropping rate.i think the class will be easy if you know the trick. the trick to Ace out his exams is DO all HIS OLD and Practice Exams.. they are almost the same questions..or at least just apply the same method... always works..good luck :)
horvath definitely gives you alot of opportunities to redeem yourself after bombing a test or quiz. The bonus quizes are a god sent. With the icredible amount of extra credit he offers, it really is rather difficult to get anything other than an A if you apply yourself and want to learn. Definitely doable!
buy his copy of notes and go to class. do not take him over summer, since tests are free response instead of multiple choice. take someone easier if you can. but if not just go to class. he's a really cool interesting old guy. it's just a really hard class
Yes, his tests are difficult, but he makes them hard so that you can be well prepared for organic. So expect to study a lot for his class. The good thing is that he gives out a lot of extra credit opportunities both on tests and bonus quizzes. He may appear to be uncaring, but he really does want his students to succeed.
Great teacher if you're willing to learn He's actually a funny and caring guy. Go to class, study the past exams, you'll do fine. Don't mess up the quizzes, be sure to do the BQs. They are standardizing 2046 to his material, be prepared you can't escape him with a different teacher. That will actually be worse since you all take the same test
Honestly he's not that bad. I went to every class and understood NOTHING and just copied down EVERY word he said, read it later and actually understood it. The key to this class is past exams!! Memorize them and you'll do fine. If you want to understand concepts, read his book. After a while you actually begin to understand it.
Horvath is the worst professor I've ever had in my entire life. I'm a very smart girl but I'll tell you what Horvath made me feel like the biggest idiot alive. His class is insanely hard, his textbook is hard to understand, & his notes are horrible. Avoid taking him at all costs. Especially during summer unless you like spending every day miserable
Absolutely terrible. For a professor of chemistry he actually teaches a lot of it wrong. One day he tried to teach equilibrium and got confused. He ended up teaching an entire class of 300 students how to do ICE charts incorrectly. Our TA had to fix the damage in section. And his notes are incomprehensible. Avoid at all costs.
Not that bad, but very difficult at first. Study old exams, since his notes will not prepare you for exam questions. TAs are sometimes helpful. He moves fast in lectures and is not always easily understood. TutoringZone is helpful for the first couple of exams. The class will force you to learn a lot to get an A. There are many bonus points.
DONT TAKE THIS CLASS. This is not a prank but a genuine offer to help. Taking this class means that you will have to go to Angerhofer's lectures. Do not take this class, why trouble yourself when you can take another prof's lecture.
You can't udnerestimate Horvath, that's for sure. Let's be real here for a moment, if you can't get an A in General Chemistry II, you may not be cut out for chemistry or medicene. He's certainly not easy, but you just have to be ready to step up to the plate. He knows CHM2045 is a joke, so don't expect anything like 2045, come ready to play.
Okay, here's the thing: you're probably chemical engineering major or pre-health, so you need to expect some difficulty. Admittedly, Horvath's tests are demanding; but if you attend lecture and do old exams you should be able to do well. He is a brilliant teacher and knows how to make you understand the ins and outs.
Horvath knows chemistry and he is a very smart man. However, he does a poor job conveying his knowledge to the class and expects his students to know a lot of chemistry and learn quickly. His exams are HORRIBLE! If you HAVE TO take this course with Horvath, BONUS POINTS are going to be your best friend. I know some ppl who have gotten As though...
Unless youre an engineer youre going to have to take horvath's tests and theres no way around it. yes, theyre hard. but he gives you 2 years of old tests! if you study his old tests about 5 days before the exam, itll be manageable. and every test has a 20% built-in curve! if people spent as much time working as they did complaining theyd have A's.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS UNLESS YOU WANT TO FEEL LIKE YOU NEED TO CHANGE YOUR ENTIRE LIFE GOALS. HE IS EXTREMELY DIFFICULT. DOES NOT HELP IN OFFICE HOURS. AN A IN CHEM 1 MEANS NOTHINGGGG. THIS CLASS IS VERY VERY HARD. THERE IS ALOT OF EXTRA CREDIT BUT IT SEEMS TO BE USELESS. DOING THE PRACTICE EXAMS PREPARES YOU TO GET A 50% ON THE EXAM.
lol, you don't have to take this class. just take keaffaber's engineering section instead
i read all the reviews of horvath before i took the class and thought i was going to do awful. If you're pre-med, it would be in your overall best interest to take horvath because to do well it requires you to actually LEARN..a strange concept to some but if you really want to see the fruits of your labor pay off in the long run, take this class.
I am Pre-Med and never made even a C before this class. I went to every lecture and discussion. I went to tutoringzone before every test. I did all the old practice tests and quizzes. I would say avoid at all costs take it somewhere else where you can get more one on one with the professor.
Worst teacher ever. Class is completely useless on the test. Questions from exams have no relevance to the class and are unnecessarily hard.
I really enjoyed Dr. Horvath. The class is hard, but it is possible to get a good grade. Many people complained but the group of people that I studied with all did very well in the class because we actually studied! It just takes a lot of time and effort. I would recommend Horvath because he actually makes you learn chemistry.
Dr. Horvath's chem 2 class was a bitter sweet experience. His exams were very difficult for most students, as you were expected to know literally Everything in his "textbook". However, he offers so much extra credit that you can pull a C average on the tests and still get an A in the class. That's what I did. :) PS- Chem 2 Lab is a nightmare
The guy's smart but he's not so good at conveying his knowledge to the students. Yea, he offers a lot of extra credit, but I still wouldn't recommend taking him. Warning: The labs that he gives for 2046 are crazy! Be prepared for the hardest lab you will ever take at UF. No help from TA's and you get lose points for guessing (can go less than 0!).
An A is possible. Not the greatest lecturer. Tests are difficult, but if you're usually a good student and do everything to understand his old tests, you're golden. These things combined SAVED MY LIFE: Broward Teaching Center (Rebecca), Tutoringzone (Rich), Office Hours (Angerhofer), Old Exams. IMPORTANT: Practice all of his old quizzes and exams!
Well, I failed two of the quizzes (got around 30%), did miserably on the homeworks, and only did marginally well on the exams. End result though, was an A. So, it really is not that difficult to get an A. Bottom line: if do you have the opportunity to take another professor, do so. But if you are stuck with Horvath, you can certainly still do well.
yes it is possible to get an A in the class due to all the extra credit, but i you don't really learn anything in my opinion. his book of notes make no sense and he teaches directly from the book and therefore his lectures make no sense. if you can possibly avoid is class do it, but otherwise get as much outside help as you possibly can
he clearly knows his stuff but thinks we all knew it too. doesn't explain well, his class is etremely hard to understand and his book is twice as hard! it is possible to get an A but be ready to teach yourself everything. doing the old exams does help! if you can don't take him!
definitely hard, but there's SO many bonus points in the class that its not as hard as it seems to get an A (33% got one last semester). contrary to popular belief, horvath's a very nice (and funny!) guy, just expects people to actually challenge themselves, and if one does so, he/she will succeed gradewise and definitely understanding-wise
honestly, horvath is NOT that bad. this class was a joke with the extra credit. dont go to lecture. dont buy the book. go to tutoring zone and do EVERY practice exam and quiz offered. an A should be the only thing you get if you dedicate yourself to each practice test and understand the methods horvath uses in each problem. recommended to anyone
really if you dont pass this class you are extremely lazy, im most likely going to make a C and I'm frustrated I didn't start trying earlier. With all the extra credit in this class, an A is soo easy to make..tutoringzone also does exam and quiz reviews which are pretty helpful
Not the most clear chem 2 professor at UF but he is very knowledgeable. He manages to keep the lectures interesting. TZ is not needed. I never used it and still got an A. Practice exams and the CLC are all you really need.
If you are serious about any science major (besides engineering), I highly recommend this course from this knowledgeable, caring, passionate teacher. It gives you the work ethic and prepares you well for future classes. Difficult but talk to your TAs or other TAs and/or go to Broward teaching center and the class will quickly become much easier.
If you are actually in his lecture, the class is not terrible. However, if you have a different lecturer, but still take his tests, you have a very VERY significant disadvantage. You grade is determined by how well you can memorize his methods and reasons for his questions, less on how well you understand chemistry. Horrid experience overall.
This class is difficult, yet the numerous amounts of extra credit makes this class very easy to get an A in. If you get a C or lower, you must be VERY lazy. Horvath is eccentric and fun to listen to as well. Horvath is the man! His tests have some WTF questions that youll never get right in your life, but most of the questions are fair. I<3 HORVATH
Horvath holds very interesting lectures! If you read his notes some of it makes sense and the other stuff who knows! I never used TZ and i did pretty good =P look at the old exams they help! if not get 2gether with friends. YOU WILL LEARN ALOt!!!!
When I first registered for his class, I was terrified whether I will do well in his class or not, but his grading system is fair. He is A GREAT TEACHER and LOVES chemistry. If you want to learn chemistry, take his class. His class is not a class to take if you are looking for an easy A, you have to earn it.
he is HARD. the first two exams were pretty easy for me, I got over 100% on them. the last two, however, he got evil or something. You definitely need outside help to pass his exams, to basically need to learn how to take a Horvath exam. Rebecca at the Broward Teaching Center helps a lot!!!
I have never learned more chemistry in my life. He is a great teacher with an extremely entertaining lecture. His tests are tough but if you know the stuff than you won't have a problem. He gives so much extra credit. He is an understanding guy. If you are willing to learn than he is willing to teach. Go to his office hours, he loves hard workers.
Horvath is not as bad as ppl make him sound. He's is very passionate about chemistry, and he is a great person. DO go to class, its mandatory ,you won't understand anything if you dont go to class. His tests are hard but if you study well you can manage a good grade. I got over a 100% on the first 3 and I didnt even have to take the final. He gives
If you got an A in chem 1 go ahead; he caters to the people that have no problem understanding chemistry.I didn't think he was a good lecturer and his book is hard to follow.I took him in the summer and the tests were free response and he doesn't believe in partial credit.Extremely rude in office hours and told me "he had other things to do".Beware
VERY difficult class, though he gives loads of extra credit (if you know how to do them). It's hard to follow him, but outside help will get you a good grade. This class is a nightmare though, and takes up so many hours in my week.
this class is definitely challenging. His lectures are absolutely pointless and going to his office hours don't help. However, an A isnt too difficult to make because his tests are almost exactly the same as his old exams, and he offers a lot of extra credit. The guy knows what he is doing but cant teach chemistry at all.
Terrible...do not take him. I dropped the course and re-took it with another professor and understood everything!
Horvath is the best chemistry teacher I've ever had. His tests are VERY hard, but his lectures are fun and hilarious, and he's way nicer than other people will have you think. He has a unique way of explaining chemistry that takes some getting used to and will make you rethink everything you learned before, but he's really an awesome professor :D
Extremely difficult exams, especially the first two. After this, about a fourth of the class will drop, and then the grading becomes a lot more generous. If you put in consistent effort, you will do well, or at the very least pass. He requires that you know the material backwards and forwards, which is difficult, but ultimately rewarding.
I dropped his class and am taking it with another teacher next semester. Extra credit is available but still VERY hard to get. His tests are very hard. Studied for hours and still got Fs. This class is one of those where you either can do his tests or you cant, but i wouldnt take the chance. He is very smart but isnt necessarily the best teacher
The man knows his stuff but can't teach to save his own life. To put it bluntly, this man wouldn't be able to teach an eskimo how to make ice. He is very passionate about chemistry and the man is funny. His exams are extremely hard, but he gives tons of extra credit. But once you fall behind it's gonna be really hard to get a good grade.
I failed all 3 exams & got a C on the final. He gives a curve INDIVIDUALLY if you show improvement. I got an F, then a higher F, a D, then a higher D, & a C on the final so I ended with a B. He talks as if we're all chem experts and rambles about rxns leaving you clueless. You likely won't fail, but save your self the stress of the unknown, please.
Good course. It wasn't as bad as many people have said. I got an A+ by studying for the class (C, C, A, A) He curves at the end, depending on whether you improve on your exams or not. Do understand the practice exams well. They help a lot.
Save yourself all the stress his class provides and don't take him. Going to office hours he doesn't help but forces you to try and figure out things you obviously don't know. His lectures are impossible to follow sometimes and because of this you have to spend twice as much time out of class studying. His curve at the end of the class is nice.
This class is a DISASTER. The lab workbook is poorly written. The experiments are all mindless work, you barely learn anything valuable from the class. The unknowns are extremely annoying. However, it is almost impossible to not get an A, even if you do badly on the three unknowns, because there is so much extra credit. Take CHM 2054L instead.
He's hard, but not impossible. Just do the practice tests and you'll be fine...sorta. Basically, he does things that show you how he thinks. All those rxns he puts on the board and his method of solving them...if you take him, heed those, study those, learn those, know how he does them. He uses those EXACT methods on his tests.
If you're looking for an easy A, you shouldn't be taking a chemistry class in the first place. Yes his class is much more difficult than most. Why? Because he wants you to look at chemistry from a whole new, and probably better, way. Study his "notes" and old exams and quizzes and you will be set. And by study I mean really study and not glance.
This might be the first time they are using this new lab book written by Horvath. It is four times longer than the previous one and ten times more difficult. There is no way you could find out how many points you can get on each part of the lab. The grading is totally arbitrary. The grade is a subjective one - which is stated in the syllabus.
This lab is a disaster. The worst lab book somebody could put together. There is no standard in grading. The TAs do whatever they want and mine Richard Bonsu is not capable of communicating in English. He couldn't care less for his students as so does Horvath. Hope the department will not renew his TA after they look @ semester student evaluations.
CHM2046 with Dr. Horvath requires some work, but it not as hard to do well in it as you may be lead to believe, because he is extremely fair with grades toward the end of class (do not drop unless you are absolutely certain of failure!). CHM2046L is also easier if you take the lecture with him. Lab manual is a abbreviated version of his lectures.
he was very difficult but if you put in the work, you will pass.
if you study the practice test and go to class and figure out how to solve the old tests you'll be fine. i got an A in the class without the curve. he might seem a bit intimidating in office hours but show him you know your stuff.
Go to class and study his notes and his old exams/quizzes in order to pass. At first he is intimidating, but once you get used to his style you can master his class. If you take the lab it is much easier with his class because he writes the lab book and it is coincides with his lectures..
Inredibly difficult class, but very rewarding. This guy is genius and he's so passionate about what he teaches. If you fall behind, you're screwed.
Difficult, but fair. Tons of extra credit on tests and quizzes. Do not take him if you don't have to go past Chemistry 2. Do not take him if you are not good at Chemistry in general. Fairly tedious lecturer. In the end, didn't do well in his class, but gave me a new outlook on Chemistry.
Very hard but he teaches well and has a lot of opportunities for extra credit (though it's hard to get sometimes). DON'T FALL BEHIND.
His class is challenging but definitely manageable. If you want to do well, you have to keep up with the material and not fall behind. He emphasizes understanding of chemistry instead of formulas and plug-and-chug routines. You have to put in a lot of work for this class, but if you're not willing to do that, just drop out of college already.
The hardest teacher I've had in my entire life BUT he was very fair. I easily spend 20 hours the week before the test studying and got a B+ (without opening the book). If you an A it's achievable if you are willing to put in the work
Very passionate about teaching but EXTREMELY difficult. Be prepared to work. You get out what you put in and you will learn more chem than you ever have in your life if you dedicate yourself wholly to this course. An A is definitely doable (~80% of people who took it got an A) but you will work harder than ever before. Seek out good TAs too!
This class was pretty tough, but not impossible. Its really important to go to class. I also went to TutoringZone to get some extra help and that was a HUGE help, definitely got me to my A!
If you want to truly learn about the nuances and completxity of chemisty, then by all means take this class. Be prepared to find TAs or others that you can discuss the material with! Understand not only the answers on past exams but the resasoning with which those answers were formed because you'll have to work problems that are very 'out there.'
AVOID HORVATH! I took him for Summer C and his exams were all free response. He has his own reasoning and rules and it is difficult to even find a tutor that understands his material. I withdrew right before the final, as did many people, because we were literally going to all get Es. DO NOT TAKE HIM unless you're amazing at Chemistry.
Avoid at all costs. Having him as a Chem teacher was just a huge headache. I studied and went to tutoring and never missed class, and still failed every exam. I passed the class, but it was still a huge pain in the -
Horvath is a brilliant man, I'll give him that. But if you aren't on his level, you will struggle the entire semester. His tests averages are awful (this summer the avg for Exam 1 was a 33%), but he sidesteps the system by adding a ton of points to the final. His notes are confusing and his lectures are disjointed. If you can, AVOID
Chemistry is a lot of work, if you dont put effort in you wont get the grade you want. You need to go to class and take good notes, read over concepts in the book, go to Tutoringzone and do as many practice problems as possible.
You have to go to class and do the work to do well in this class. If you get stuck definitely go to Tutoringzone, they saved my 2045 and 2046 grade.
He is a really hard teacher and does not follow the chemistry book at all because he believes he's basically smarter than them...The class is basically "Horvath Chemistry" not real chemistry. Super hard. Avoid at all costs.
Awful teacher. Do not take his class.
Awful teacher!!! DO NOT TAKE HIM!!! He thinks he can just change the way Chemistry is written and will confuse everything you have learned prior about chem. Even if you rock at chem, do not take him!!
Difficult but fair. I find him to be interesting and funny as a person but merciless as a teacher. If you get him, seek lots of help whether it be Horvath himself, the many TA's he has, Study Edge, Tutoring Zone, friends, ANYONE! You CANNOT pass this by yourself unless you are a god at chemistry. There's lots of curving too but don't rely on that.
I suggest you take a different chem 2 professor. You learn a lot because you have to. No way to understand it all. Have to do previous exam problems to prepare for exams, not many examples are done in class. Exam problems f-ing hard. Textbook is written by him and it is hard to read. Save yourself a stressful semester.
The best way to survive in this class is to go over the practice exams and quizzes he provides and working with others to achieve success in this course. His lectures are only helpful up to a certain point. Work as a group, not alone and you'll be fine.
MISTAKE. I honestly learned very little from him because the whole class was very confusing from his textbook to his lectures (which makes sense since his textbook is written by HIM). The only hope for passing this class is the HUGE curve at the end of the semester because no one could possibly pass without it.
He's not as bad as people make him out to be. He's just VERY HARD. Whoever said he's the Willy Wonka of Chemistry speaks the truth.
I got an A in the class, but it wasn't too easy. I studied for days for his exams, and it payed off. I had an A without the final. But, my other courses took a little beating. Go to class, he explains his textbook well I think, and read over his notes before. Also, just do his old exams to study for the exams. They're just alike.
A chemistry genius and one of the best professors I've had! He is very difficult, but is completely dedicated to giving his students a great education in Chemistry. He always makes up for ruthless tests by giving tons of extra points, so you will generally be doing better than you think. Study practice tests and go to class and you too can get an A!
Had this class for CHM2046L. 70% of your grade is unknowns, and you need to write schemes, which are basically recipes for the unknowns. Google this term: "chm2046labschemes" for schemes that are verified and gets you an A! Got an A in this lab without taking the final using those schemes.
Because of this class, i am breezing through Organic Chem, and I am prepared enough to do very well on my MCATs. This class is not easy but Horvath is the best chemistry professor at UF hands down.
I spent more time in his office than anyone else, I hired a tutor, and I dissected his practice exams and other materials. I worked hard, and expected to be rewarded by the curve at the end. The curve bumped my C to a C+. Meaning the point increase for this semester was only a half a grade up. In short, effort only gets you so far in this class.
Switch to a different professor if you have him! He's everything everyone mentioned and more! He's passionate about the subject but doesn't seem to realize that he's teaching undergrads and not PhD students! Everything about this course is really hard (unless you're a chemistry genius). This class ruined my semester!
He is the lab professor for CHM 2045/2046 and he is so rude and not helpful. Never go to him for with a question because he never answers it but just refers you to someone else. His lab is HORRIBLE. Yet, there is no other choice
Best professor I ever had and I'm a chem major taking Pchem right now which is a beast. This guy's class will prepare you well for orgo and analyt chem. If you cant handle his class, dont bother majoring in chemistry. His exams are essentially variations of old posted exams. Know how to work those and an A is easy to get. So much extra credit!!!!
He is such an amazing teacher!!I absolutely loved his class! His exams were hard but there is so much extra credit, that you don't have to stress over one exam or one quiz. I highly recommend him.
Knew from day one that it would be a challenging class. He works hard to try and teach you the information. Although the tests and quizzes are hard there are so many points built into his grading scale that it's not that big a deal if you mess up on one. His office hours are very helpful. Highly recommend if you are a chemistry related major.
Imagine you had to cross a river. Another teacher would give you the materials, an ikea like layout of how to put them together and you'd be on your way. Horvath would give you a stick. Then he'd say that sticks can float. If you're clever you'll figure out how to get to the other side. But you'll get twice as wet getting to the same place.
Super easy if you go to class. There's so much extra credit that it makes everything less stressful. I got 13/24 on my last exam which was curved to over a 100%. His work seems overwhelming and frustrating but his passion for the subject, his charm and charisma, and his willingness to see his students succeed are unparalleled at UF.
He's dedicated, passionate, and obsessed with chemistry. He'll change how you view chemistry forever. He's a true philosopher of chemistry; he's probably thought about chemistry more than anyone else in the world, and it shows each day you go to class. Challenging, but extremely, extremely rewarding. Extremely helpful office hours. Great guy!
A lot of people talk about how mean he is for lab and the manual is confusing but I found he is actually very nice. I had strep the day of our final, and he was very accommodating in letting me make up and even gave me some extra time. The manual is only confusing if you don't read before class.
Came in knowing it'd be crazy. He "has a reputation and loves it." But as a chem major, I've never ever met anyone more passionate about chemistry. He really loves what he does and his desire for students to succeed is, frankly, amazing, and something you will not find from any other prof at UF. I wish he taught upper division too.
Dr. Horvath is, flat out, the most knowledgable chemist I have ever met. His zest for chemistry is UNREAL, and you will learn so much…..IF YOU DO WHAT HE TELLS YOU. As stated, lots of extra credit, and he is extremely nice and helpful IF you show a genuine interest in chemistry. If your a slacker, watch out!
Dr. Horvath is, far and wide, one of the last TRUE philosophers of chemistry. Just don't fall behind, do what he says, and you'll be fine. This is college people….not supposed to be easy. PS-I ACED analytical chemistry after this class, as its much the same.
People need to grow up and face 2046 head on. Mastering Dr. Horvath's class will lead to a guaranteed A in analytical chemistry more or less. Im not sure what everybody is talking about that he isn't nice? He doesn't take slackers…but does you boss like when you slack at work? This man pours his soul into teaching, and is a living legend.
Horvath is a phenomenal teacher. If you are good in chem and any bit of a good studentbyou will get the A. I had a very frantic semester with Horvath even though I accel in chem I'm not the greatest student in the world. I was often scrambling to keep up but in the end it paid off. Unless you're studying to be a chemical engineer, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! Horvath definitely knows his stuff, but his tests are RIDICULOUS. Yes, he curves, BUT you will go the entire course w/ a D, and then AFTER the withdraw deadline he'll curve it. He teaches above the chem 2 level--great if you are continuing with chem. Otherwise, AVOID HIM.
Dr. Horvath is tough/very knowledgeable. You'll learn more than you knew you were capable of if you try hard. I am in CHM2046 summer B (6 weeks) after ~5 years since CHM2045 w/ Gower. I find it hard but still only need ~50% on the final for an A. He uses his own book that kind of sucks. Use google/TA's/old exams to do well. Find a GOOD TA!
Dr. Horvath's class was not only interesting, as I believe he is a fantastic lecturer, but he truly has passion for his knowledge, and he wants to pass it along to us as students. In class he is very animated and energetic, which helps me to stay awake. He truly wants us to learn chemistry, and learn chemistry I did.
This class was very difficult for me. I was not able to learn from his lectures and from just doing the homework. Study Edge really helped me to understand the concepts and taught me what I needed to know for the exams and I ended up getting an A in the class.
He doesn't care about his students at all and structures the class so that a lot of people don't do well.
Not helpful at all in class. His explanation's in the lab manual are confusing. This course is never in tangent with chm2046.
Horvath doesn't care about you. You won't see him once in the lab, not even the first day. 80% of your grade is unknown analysis. That's cool, but everything in that lab is contaminated, so expect to get a bunch of false positives, and yes, they ALL count against you. Also, the "De-Ionised Water", you know, the pure water, has a pH of 5. Have fun
I took Chem1+Lab in the summer. The lab & lecture lessons aren't coordinated so you're always doing things in lab that you haven't been taught yet. It would have been nice to learn something in lecture and then apply it in lab. Instead you have to figure it out from the poorly written lab manual. Not once did Horvath come to lab; hope for a good TA
I'm taking his class this semester and so far I have no clue on what he tries to teach us. He does not use the required book at all. I took AICE and AP chemistry and what he's teaching is literally not related to those classes at all. Try to get any other chem professor because you won't understand anything Horvath teaches.
I had him for Chem 1 Lab. Or at least, what's what my schedule said. I have never seen him at any point in time, not even on the first day. I have watched videos of Horvath teaching and he doesn't seem bad, like the reviews would make him seem. The reason his ratings are so low is because he's never present. Literally. Never.
I have taken AP chemistry in the past and did very well, but Horvath makes chemistry seem like a foreign language to me. His lectures do not make sense and are not similar to the other professors teaching the same material. DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE WITH THIS PROFESSOR
An awful professor for someone who did not take AP Chem in high school. Almost everything the said went right over my head.
I took Horvath for CHM2045 plus lab. He was never in the laboratory, but I had a really awesome TA so the lab part was fairly easy. On the other hand, Horvath's lectures are very confusing and he did not teach to the exam given to everyone taking CHM2045. I didn't fall asleep during lecture (he isn't boring) but definitely didn't learn.
DON'T choose him. His lectures are unclear and not helpful. He teaches like you all have phD's. He spends half the class time talking about things other than pertinent material. He does not use the textbook.
He is most definitely the worst chemistry professor at UF. If you have heard anything good about him, those people obviously understand chemistry to a point where they understand what he is teaching. If you have a slight background in chemistry, you will not be able to pass his class.
Horvath's lectures are impossible to follow because he jumps around from subject to subject a lot. Do not take his class if you can. I'm only getting a good grade in this class because of Study Edge.
Horvath is awful. Do not take him if you aren't an aspiring chemist or have a thorough, deep understanding of Chemistry. Provided no outside help, is very rude, and actual due dates were different than the ones listed on a syllabus making it impossible to follow along well. Just don't take this class with this professor.
I've personally never failed a class before and here I come taking chemistry for the third time and I failed because he is unclear, and a poor instructor. I'm surprised he's still there because all he complains about is the textbook and administration. No matter how much help you get, you'll never pass. I put too much effort just to fail. DON'TTAKE
He got slightly better as the semester went on, but still a horrible professor. Don't take him unless you already have a deep understanding of everything chemistry. TutoringZone is the only reason I did well. On the bright side, he only has four easy homework assignments based on past tests.
Your grade depends almost entirely on your TA and your lab mates; you never see the professor. Doing well on the lab quizzes is also important. There's also an optional extra credit final. Go over the past quizzes and the problem pdfs on canvas and it should be pretty easy.
Class is extremely difficult... Lectures don't teach much at all. The only reason I got an A was because of Study Edge chapter reviews and exam reviews.
Horvath's CHM labs are the BEST at UF. He only coordinates them so you never see him. It's the TAs that will work with you and honestly all the resources are available for you to do well. Took these labs 3 years ago yet I had to come back and write a review. Tons of extra credit offered!
Awful teacher, doesn't help the students out at all and provides poor instructions in HIS lab book
He is obviously passionate about the subject. He has a very unique way of looking at things and is definitely unorthodox. Any of his practice questions are cryptic and use confusing wordage. If he structured the exams completely, it would have been disastrous. I would HIGHLY recommend Study Edge; it saved my grade and then some.
You will not see him once, but his workbook is super confusing. You have to work hard to earn an A
Frustrating
Trying to learn chemistry from this man is like trying to learn astrophysics from someone who speaks a completely different language from you. Not only does his class not make sense, he is a pompous idiot that is full of himself. You are better off learning chemistry from a rock.
Pray that you get a good TA, because otherwise lab will be near impossible. Get the schemes from someone. Be careful on unknowns because small mistakes can drop your score. STUDY FOR THE FINAL. Look at the old exam and memorize your schemes. Try to look at the past experiments as well. The final can save your grade--it brought me up 2 letter grades
You're never going to see him - it's your TA who matters for lab. Pray you get a good one... mine literally would tell our group the answers, god bless him. But Horvath writes the lab book and it's extremely dense, hard to understand, and difficult to follow. Plus the labs don't really coincide with what you learn in lecture.
