His lectures are rather fast paced, assumes you know it already
Moves way too fast and does not explain things well. Hard tests! Funny though.
He's the only Prof. at York that has never put me to sleep!!! Great Prof!
Super funny examples, but doesn't really go through the material in depth
Great, interesting teacher, but multiple choice tests were WAY too hard!

Very funny + interesting lectures = good course
funny but mean

Funny guy, must listen to lecs thoroughly to get multiple choice
Nice guy...lectures were hard to follow...multiple choice hard...must read text!
Extremely Funny! Tests okay, but MC part is very tricky.

He is by far my favorite teacher from York. I took as many classes with him as possible. He makes lecutres funny and entertaining, and as long as u pay attention you can pass his tests with ease. plus he hates york, and lets us buy cheap old textbooks
GREAT GUY...JUST LISTEN TO HIM AND YOU'LL DO FINE
just pay attention and ask for help and you'll do fine!
Let's just say we saw **** videos in the class... seriously! Overall a good course, good professor, but many ambiguous test questions.
Great Prof, Funny, extremely easy to do very well. Don't recommend you watch his video, it's not required for the class.
The prof was entertaining, but the multiple choice exams were hard, i found that the stuff in class did not relate to that on the exams and the prof used different symbols than the text book which made things more confusing.
Sucks. Rambles on about nothing and tries too hard to be funny. Can't learn anything because his lessons are in the rambles.
This professor is not good at all. He tries too hard to be funny rather than teach us the lesson. He uses formulas that are not even in the text books and expects us to do the questions without examples. He teaches us as if we are all A students.
Very funny guy. Certainly an unconventional teaching style but I learned plenty from his class.
At the beginning his jokes r funny but by the end of the year, u'll find his jokes so unfunny and he repeat the same old jokes over and over again. Tests questions came from everywhere except from the text book. Exams are really tough.
Very funny professor. Research on sex and relationships are very interesting. He loves politics. Overall, he's a good professor. Exams can be a little picky.
Worst prof ever! very unhelpful, talks down to students, and tries wayyyyyyyyyyy to hard to be funny but he's not. I don't know how they let this guy teach.
One of the most ineffective profs I've ever had the misfortune of having at York. AVOID HIS CLASS UNDER ALL CIRCUMSTANCES
If you are a person who has difficulty with math he is very good to take statistics with. He teaches the concept more than the formulae. If you can understand the concept but have trouble working through math problems then he is the best!
good prof
Such an arrogant, cauky prof. Thinks he's so funny and he has such dry humour. The only people who laugh are the ones trying to suck up. He picks on people and instead of simplifying things, he makes them more complicated.
Do not take this class, this professor is not good at all. He TRIES to be funny but he is not...he cant teach for beans! And over simplifies the concepts in the book and seems to make his own formulas. Impossible to get an A.
This man has a thing against the text and its author, so its a waste to even buy the book. Im no math genious and he made me hate it even more. His teaching notes actually date back to the 70s, no lie. Avoid this man and his class before its too late.
The worst prof ever.... has problems with textbook yet he makes his students buy it for course. AVOID AT ALL COSTS
Very clear and concise lectures. If you are at all competent with math you can do very well with very little effort in this class.
RUN, RUN AWAY AS FAR AS POSSIBLE IF YOU HAVE HIM. DO NOT TAKE STATS WITH HIM, HE WILL **** YOU UP ON EXAMS. HE'S ARROGANT AND DOES NOT CARE IF YOU UNDERSTAND THE MATERIAL, VERY HARD TESTS. WROST PROF I HAVE EVER HAD AT YORK.
Students with critical thinking skills who work hard should do very well. Exams test concepts and there is an opportunity to earn bonus marks. Prof is enthusiastic and relates stats to real life. Prof very helpful if approached nicely.
Very good at making you feel competent esp. if u hate math. Easy going, funny. Understands his students hate stats so he tries to accomodate for them. Great! Even though I did bad!
James Check is a discusting example of a Prof. He is arrogant and condescending and tries his best to make you feel dumb for asking justified questions. Mainly though he just cant teach and breezes over complicated concepts with litle to no examples. His tests are murder! I honestly think he trys to make students do poorly. GET OUT WHILE U CAN!!
He is a good lecturer with everyday life examples. His tests are difficult even though they are mostly multiple choice. What shocked me was that the T.A. corrected all the tests & was also in charge of our final marks. I would take a class with him again.
hope to god you have a good t.a. check was okay...but with the help of the t.a everything was clear, even what check said. if the t.a wasn't so good at explaining, i wouldn't have been able to do anything. good t.a = good mark. regardless of check who is arrogant
He managed to simplify a lot of things. Most of the interactions were done with the TA, but he was pretty appochable at the times that I asked him a question. He had a lot of examples to get the point across. Tests weren't bad if you study.
Check is a really nice prof and he's pretty funny too and has a really good sense of humor so he manages to crack the class up pretty often. the class is interesting and easy if u know the textbook for the tests. if your good at multiple choice this class is for you. also the TA was really nice- a girl i forget her name. great prof!
Great prof. He has a good sense of humour and sets pretty easy tests. Also gives you 10% of the course just for signing the attendance sheet in tutorials. I never really got the impression that he was arrogant.
Prof. Check was amazing. He made statistics fun, he was able to bring the class to life. His tests are fair, if you put that study time in and pay close attention to your assignments you can come out with a decent mark.

Check is a very engaging and helpful instructor. He will go over course the material until everyone understands. He goes out of his way to make somewhat dry material relevant to his students. I had absolutely no interest in Stats before this class, but he made the class a great experience. But do your homework - he can't LEARN the material for you!
If you can, TAKE STATS WITH THIS PROF! Believe it or not, the class was fun. He presents the material in a clear way, his tests were fair, he's very funny and helpful. I was actually sad when it was over!
Dr. Check is a great prof. VERY interesting lectures and fair tests. I enjoyed every minute of his class. Best prof I've ever had!
Prof. Check made learning stats enjoyable, he would tell jokes and comment on daily applications of the content. However, he spent too much time joking than trying to be clear. Impossible not to get lost in his class, but if you follow the topics, it'll eventually come to you. Open book exam was extremely hard, other exams were fair.
this prof is great at lecturing..he explains everything very well..i wouldnt say his tests are hard but ppl complain about em only cuz they didnt do their readings..u cant expect to get a good mark unless u read the txt too..overall great prof funny too
Dr. Check was GREAT!! When I messed up one of my exams he tried to get me in touch with some dept. for my test anxiety, which I had ALWAYS struggled with. He is great in class, but the tutorials for STATS are IMPORTANT, same with for Social Psych. Make sure you ask when you are lost on things, he will explain it until he is blue in the face for you
His lectures are good, he talks clear and are interesting. But the extra day of tutorial is waste of time. The TA was lazy and didn't add anything new. But the tests were easy just study the book well. But don't waste your time with the extra day of tutorial.
Great prof. He makes stats an interesting course. I have had him for both stats and social psyc. I recommend him for both courses. The one bad thing about him is that his TA teaches the tutorial, which is hit or miss.
I loved Check. He was awesome and funny because he was so random and weird. Sometimes went through the material fast and exams were alright but I enjoyed the class and did really well compared to what I was expecting going in
great prof..knows what hes talking about..he makes lectures very interesting and easy to understand...attend lectures and tutorials and youll get a good mark
Dr. Check is great, he's funny and gives relevant examples to make the material easier to understand. Use the textbook, and review your notes!
I liked him at first but as time went by it got old listening to all his randomness. This is a class that MANY people dropped, so he should have realized that he needed to spend more time teaching. NO ONE got higher than an 88 on tests & the averages were always high 50s low 60s. I did get an A, but I still found the tests incredibly unfair
Pretty good professor.. keeps things interesting. for the tests: as long as you study his notes and pay attention to things he says, you'll be just fine
The class was difficult. Over time, he was useful for teaching more abstract contacts. The T.A. (Jenny Lewin) was excellent. She will help you keep your grades up. So Prof --> Concepts. T.A.--> nitty-gritty details relating to test. Multiple choice questions are very hard to understand. Good luck!
It was a very interesting class. I strongly recommend keeping up with readings and review very often to keep your grades up. The T.A. (Allison) was very nice and helpful. Beware: cramming will kill you, even if you're good at cramming.
Very difficult class and his tests can be very tricky...That being said, he has a wonderful sense of humour and explains things crystal-clearly. If you read the textbook chapters before each class you will benefit the most from his lectures!
He is very funny explains concepts clearly. I thought i understood everything perfectly until i wrote his tests. His m/c questions are VERY tricky. You would have to understand all concepts. Fun in class but not fun at all during tests.
He is really good at explaining the concepts, however the text we used wasn't that helpful. however his tests are not so easy. but he is willing to help and he is very understanding :)
you have to fully understand the concepts to do well on his tests - multiple choice questions were tricky. But other then that he is a really good prof. If you study and attend lectures, you should do fine
He really knows his stuff. I really didn't think I would ever understand anything in this class but Prof Check made it easier by the way he teaches.
I don't know what some of the people here are complaining about! This is an amazing professor, who explains very clearly, very helful and not to mention entertaining as hell! His book is crystal clear! Yes, his exams are not easy but they're not hard either! Of course you have to know the material, what did you think you'd just go into a stats cour
LOVVVVVVVE HIM!!Stats is a very hard subject, but he makes it easier. That's not to say u'll A+ the class. But he makes it easier to understand & he's freaken hilarious!!Very helpful too. I Never missed a class cuz he's that good.very friendly too. great prof!!totally recommend him as a stats prof, he's the best!!!
This prof was GREAT! i enjoyed coming to class every week and he made stats fun. He was able to simplify the course and make it easy to understand. He is also very approachable and would def suggest taking a course taught by him
Wonderful prof! Read the book before each class and do the assignments. First test was pretty hard, but the open book one was so easy(if you haven't study, test might seem pretty hard in regards of the time needed to go over your notes).Easy assignments!! :-) TAKE HIM!!
He is honestly amazing. I hate math, and he made me enjoy it. Honestly, if you attend the lectures and tutorials. Pay attention, ask questions when you are confused. There is no reason why you cant get an A. He makes class funny and keeps you engaged the whole time. LOVE LOVE LOVVVVEEE HIM.
Amazing professor. Was terrified to take stats considering i have zero skills when it comes to numbers and formulas. Ended up with one of the highest marks in his class. If you attend all his lectures and practice on a regular basis you can pass this class with flying colors. He's hilarious and explains the concepts in the most unique ways.
AMMAAZZZIIINNGGG PROFESSORR. best I've ever had. Sit at the front and ask questions, do the assignments (easy A), and keep up.
if u care bout ur marks n learning DON tke his cls, he only tlks bout politics n cover 5-10% of syllbus n wan us to read the whole book b4 xam..da 1st xam was 35%.....bt if u wanna learn bout can poltcs, his n his family's view bout polts thn tke his class....he's useless n confusing..but as a person he;s oky,i end up dropin da course, intolrble cls
a littleracits twrds muslims n islam, good prof overall,if hes reading i hope he can come up with a better ex to explain knowledge fn, so as to not hurting some of the ppl from the same group, m sure other exmpls can be used to xplain it, even tho thts the one txt uses. txt book is diff to understand as well btw, time for a new textbook plz!!!
I really appreciate that Check knocked a student who referred to god as a male in class. A lot of you may not understand this , but he took action to stop sexism at the time. Agreed, that the text book doesn't take its own research into mind to make it clearer. Really interesting message, but bad writing for a psych text.
Profesor Check is THE prof to take stats with. He is entertaining and extremely helpful - don't be scared of asking questions. His MC are incredibly tricky, so know your theory inside out. The short answers are alright, easier. The assignments are a bit complicated, but not entirely impossible. You need to really understand the material to do well.
This guy made stats understandable to those who hate and struggle with math. he also helped me with an assignment that i had for a different class even though he wasn't teaching it. he's fun, and is always happy. TAKE HIS COURSE if you can...best Prof ever...the only reason why i passed the class
Dr. Check is so far the best prof I've had at york! He lightens up the mood by cracking jokes which made me feel more at ease. The material is hard but he's willing to help with any difficulties and does a good job at that too. If possible, try to get Matt as your TA- he's awesome! I'm even taking social psych with Check because he's so great
This proff is HORRIBLE! He doesnt go by the textbook at all and makes you do way more work than any of the other stats professors do..I dropped it last year because i hate him so much..he focuses too much on making jokes instead of teahcing. And his TA Cheryl is HORRIBLE!! She doesnt explain anything...just bad
An honest man. He fully tells you what to expect from his lectures and the textbook, which reflects his test. You wont get by just lightly skimming the book. Know your stuff, and pay close attention to the lectures, since they are what the short answers are based out of - which are easier than the M/C.
I dropped this guys class right after the first exambecause he was impossible. Took it with Haltrecht and love him! I looked back at my notes from check and dont even understand them even though i fully understand stats because of Haltrecht. He taught unnecessary material that made everything harder than it needed to be..No..just no..hate this dude
His class was absolutely terrible! He spends far too much time going off topic and rambling about irrelevant subjects, trying to be funny. His exams are very difficult - you can study like mad and still not know where he is getting the questions from. I would never take another course from him again.
He is the type of prof who likes students who try hard and understand their material. He is approachable BUT only if you already have a comprehendsion of the material. At times I really enjoyed this professor and other times disliked him greatly. His TA was awesome (Matt). This is a class one must attend cuz his test focus highly on in class material
Easy b/c (I think) he doesn?t go as indepth as other sections of 2020 but some test Qs tricky, KNOW WHAT CONCEPTS MEAN & IMPLY. Rambles. Approachable & Helpful IF you ask specific Qs, show u read text and made an effort to learn, not just ?I don?t get anything?. Textbook (Hurlburt) Bad, TOO easy. TA (Matt) AMAZING-Go to tutorials.
He was just amazing! Since i hate math i thought it will be a fail for me, but he proved me wrong. Makes the material crystal clear but using everyday life situations plus jokes a lot. If stats only with HIM!! But make sure TA is good, because its very important.
Meh.. Harmless prof... nice. I did pretty bad on fist exam though, so do study a bit. The other 2 exams I got an A in so got B+ at the end. Pretty straight forward, read the chapters, attend lectures-you'll be fine. Boring course though. Was looking forward to it all summer, was quite disappointed when the course started. Take develop or abnormal p
One of my fave profs! I was never good @ math until this class with professor Check + TA Amanda. Really good at explaining things, really funny, very approachable. I love him! Make sure you attend lecture& do practise questions even if not assigned, this is not a bird course.
Hard exams and his lectures are hard to understand and seem to go way of topic. good luck in this class.
I absolutely love him! love going to his classes, love the course and everything else about it. He's very funny and his tests aren't difficult if you study. Only tests on material studied from the book or in class. My Favorite prof so far at york.
One of the best Stats profs at York. He gives you the applied version which is what psych 2020 is. Normally you get a psychologist trying to teach a math based course which is awful. He teaches stats for psych students, plain and simple.
Nice guy, but bad prof. He will go on a tangent explaining something, without really making the basic definition of the topic clear. Or he'll mention something and never return to it. Lectures can feel disorderly. As if studying the textbook isn't enough, in lecture he doesn't touch textbook material. Instead he adds random new concepts.
Lectures were interesting as well as book material. Exams were graded unnecessarily hard. T.A.s are picky about every single detail and even if you know the material but word it differently from what they think, you won't get full marks. Basically = easy to understand material, hard tests.
I hated math and never did well with math previously but Prof. Check presents stats in a way where you use logic combined with formulas and graphs. He's super funny/entertaining but if you miss a class it's really hard to make-up the material. TA was didn't clarify things at all so needed to rely on asking questions in class or online resources.
if you take social psych do not take it with him, he is interesting and nice and everything but his tests are too hard and tricky for a 2nd year psych course, i did better in my 3rd year psych courses
Easily the worst teaching methods I've ever experienced at YorkU. No use of online resources or moodle, no forums, no video use. He sits and talks for the entire 3 hours. Writes a few points in messy writing on the chalkboard and tells jokes for the remainder. And you guessed it, the jokes aren't funny. Highly disappointing prof, avoid at all cost
LISTEN FOLKS! Take notes very attentively in class and read the textbook. This is the first class I've gotten over 100% EVER. BEST PROFESSOR EVER!! Bonus questions will leave you euphoric and praising allah.
I highly recommend taking Stats 2020 with professor Check, he is very knowledgable and knows how to present material in a clear and fun way. He is also very helpful. I wouldn't say he was all that easy, but if you keep up with your readings and attend every class you will do great!
Dr. Check is an amazing professor!!! He covers all that is needed for the exams and is very funny (he even provides you with hints as to what to expect on the exams)! Its not hard at all to do well in his stats class. You just need to make sure you keep up with your readings, attend EVERY lecture, take notes in class and review before the test!
Prof Check is one of the best stats professors at York. He is very funny and kind and helpful. You do need to attend class and read the text but more important than that, do the practice questions, do the assignments and practice practice practice for exams. Understand the concepts - then put them into practice.
He is disinterested in teaching materials in the textbook. He simply talks about his research. Comes unprepared to class and talks about his research and his work. And he favours jokes that women like. As a male student, he is a very bad professor to take a class. If you are willing to teach yourself through textbook readings, it's ok.
AMAZING professor! by far one of my favourite professors at york. Professor check explains formulas in ways that are easy to understand. He is funny, easy to listen to, and approachable. He really wants his students to do well, he even gives hints on what to expect for the exams. As well, he gives bonus questions in order to help people succeed!
Not funny. Tests are very difficult.
He is a great prof! Makes the class interesting by cracking jokes and telling personal stories and involving the class in discussion. He applies the material to everyday life which makes it easier and much more interesting to learn! Read the text and show up to class (he uses stuff from both on tests) and you will get an A.
Sometimes i found the book more interesting than the prof, he sometimes tries too hard to be funny, but is a really nice guy He gave bonus questions on the exams to get higher grades, 3 exams -mc & short answers you have to go to lecture because what he says there will come in short answers and mc is from book Overall fun and easy course
AMAZING PROFESSOR! Really clear and funny, makes the class entertaining. gives a lot of hints for tests. need to go to class, but their easy to sit through. Tests are really fair, just need to study. One of the best profs i've ever had!!! Really cares about students. Course is overall not too difficult. Get the textbook for sure!
He's a great professor - genuinely wants you to succeed, makes jokes to help you remember concepts, & group assignments & tests are not easy but fair. Reading the textbook, coming to lecture & tutorial are mandatory otherwise u wont pass. Also do his practise questions! Overall amazing prof, it was a pleasure being his student! Z WILL MAKE U FREE!
Professor Check is not only hilarious but he also really cares about his students. On every test there are bonus questions so you can get up to 140% on each of the three tests assigned in the class. Showing up to lectures is important for the tests but his lectures are amazing and funny so it's totally worth it.
I was very afraid of any kind of math and truly believed I was going to pass this course with a D-, if at all. Prof Check made everything make sense, went slow, and made sure to explain everything extremely thoroughly. I ended with a B and this can be attributed to his style of teaching and the connection he makes with students. BEST PROF EVER
Professor Check is one of the best profs I've ever had! He makes stats easy to understand with the way he presents the material, and his assignments help so much with the test questions! You can tell he cares for his students and his tests are extremely fair. Best professor at York! I would definitely take any class with him again.
Check's an awesome prof! Class attendance is a MUST because he does not post his lectures online and goes over material that is not in the textbook but will appear on the test. The level of difficulty of his exams isn't too bad. I gave the rating a 4 because he gives bonus marks on each test for 125%
Very nice lecturer, tried to make the textbook more interesting by giving practical examples which he will test you on in the midterms. Also gives bonus questions so very easy to pass.
Prof. Check is amazing. knows his stuff well. Relates theory to everyday topics and things happening in the news. Exams are mcqs and short answer. Mcqs from book and written from lectures so must attend.
Check is an ok prof. The way in which he responds to questions or requests for clarification is not particularly helpful. Makes a lot of jokes which is nice. Exams are not 'Easy' but MORE than fair! Doesn't use slides, writes on chalkboard... Not too fond of that but wasn't the end of the world
Doesn't post lecture slides, writes on chalkboard and talks, so you have to go class. It's not that bad though. His exams are fair, and he lets you get bonus points. His lectures make sense and are usually not too bad. Exams have a good amount of textbook questions and lecture questions, so you really do need both. 30 pages of textbook per lecture.
Fun sense of humour, seems like a nice guy. But in terms of teaching course content clearly, nope. Thank goodness the assigned text book was good - interesting read and clear.
Pretty funny guy, makes the material less dull. A lot of the textbook questions are pointless, but if you do most of them the tests should be fairly easy & straightforward (w/ few trick questions). Also gives tons of bonus questions. He only writes in chalk so notes can be a bit messy. The questions he says are going to be on the test often are.
Prof. Check is a great prof. Although he writes on the chalkboard, which isn't great, he makes up for it in the way he portrays the information. He uses real-world examples to make the information easier to understand. The short answer questions were based on lecture material and there was also bonus questions which helps boost your mark.
I had come on this last year in hopes to find a good professor for stats. This has to be one of the worst professors I've ever had at york university. Not only does he constantly go off topic but his test are extremely hard. me along with other students felt as though he tried more to show how smart he was rather than help students out.
I had written a test that had been postponed and I got my mar back 4 weeks later after the university indicated that marks had been posted so i had an F on my transcript for 4 weeks. He gets his TA to do all the work and his exams are the worst he'll teach 1 way anova but on the test but 2 way to skew with people. you also do not get a cheat sheet.
The breakdown was 4 tests & 4 assignments. The assignments were due before the tests, and helped to reinforce info you needed to know before the test. Our TA, Miriam, would tirelessly help students with their assignments if they needed it. Our TA would even post practice tests!! Check himself is funny, but his humor is a little insensitive as well
Dr. Check is a fair professor. He is thorough in his lectures and does not mind answering questions. You have to do all assignments in this class in groups of four and you all get the same grade- so that's annoying. The textbook uses different notation than the class- so you could probably get away without it but it would be a risk.
I had him for stats and it was a year course. He was an average professor- wasn't horrible but wasn't great. His lectures were regurgitations of textbook theory. Get a good TA and you get a good grade because they teach you the math that makes the theory understandable. Tests are MC heavy and theory heavy, less about the math. Know the textbook!!!
Very nice professor, clear with content and cares sit his students. Had him for social psych
Had social psych with him and it was honestly my favourite class so far. He does not use power point slides nor does he post any lectures online so you have to go to class for info but he makes it all so interesting and he is genuinely funny. He provides bonus questions on tests up to 20 marks so you can easily get an A.
Prof. Check is amazing! He explains statistical concepts so clearly! He does not take attendance, but if you really want to well you should go to lectures.
He's a joker which is cool unless you're easily annoyed by those kinds of things. Knows what he's talking about and is very knowledgeable on the course material. Some may find the course work itself very hard but that has nothing to do with the prof. He teaches it well and is very approachable.
By far one of the best professors I have ever had. The class is great, he doesn't use powerpoint so be prepared to write a lot. The class itself is amazing my favourite class I've ever had. If you ever have this prof with this class you're golden. Tests are long but if you study your good, very clear about what he wants, no surprises.
Professor Check knows what he's talking about. He's funny and interacts with students. You definitely need to go to lecture as he posts nothing online, and read the textbook because it supplements the lecture material. His tests are fair but you do need to study. Sometimes he brings his dog to class and I think more profs should do that.
Dr. Check is a gem. He is quite the joker, if you don't like that in a professor, stay away. He does not post anything online and lots of test material comes from the lecture, so you have to go class. He is a huge proponent of application in psychology, so his tests have short answer portions that test your ability to apply theory. 3 Tests w Bonus
Nice prof, but no slides. Have to read textbook (MC) and attend lecture (SA) to do well. Pretty nice. Tends to spend a lot of class talking about current politics that is unlikely to show up - can be a bit of a snoozefest.
Hes one of my favorite profs at York. He explains things very simply and doesnt over complicate material. The TA provides a great amount of resources and practice. He also goes off topic but still manages to go through everything. He super funny and makes 3 hours bearable and interesting
Dr. Check is a great prof. If you don't like profs that joke around and keep things light then don't take a class with him. For stats he makes the material easy to understand. You must attend lectures as he does not record or use power point for lectures. Tests are based off of lectures mostly. Textbook is great to use for practice questions.
an amazing prof and great lecturer. very entertaining and engaging. funny and approachable. one of the few courses where you will actually learn and enjoy doing so. tests are based on readings and lecture discussions so both are mandatory. also gives 20 bonus marks per midterm!!!
Nice prof
tbh this class was mad annoying. i took it with him bc it said on here he had good ratings but his online format and everything was terrible. annoying class, would only take again because now i know what to expect from him, try to not take his class but he isnt the worst. i can tell he means good but idk.
My guy was a great prof. Anyone who says he wasn't needs to check if they should be in uni. He posts lecture recordings and gives GENEROUS bonus marks (you could get 120% on tests). No participation marks, no tedious assignments, just 3 tests. Study the textbook, watch the lecture recordings, and you get an A. 10/10. He's a great prof.
He's very funny and is a great lecturer. Although he does not post any powerpoints so you have to attend class and write all notes. His test questions are very confusing and random, you have to remember the smallest things. Tests are based on the textbook and lectures. Overall he was good.
his lecture style is a bit difficult to understand but omg this prof is amazing. he cares about what he teachers and he really tries to engage his students in class conversations. he's always interested in the examples that students give. overall, he's a wholesome being and often shows us his dog, his view out the window, and some photos
Very nice professor! 3 tests; 40%, 30%, and 30%. Tests are MC & short answer. They are easy, short answer is graded tough. For first test, he has bonus questions. His lectures go off topic but he records them so you can skip through and watch imp parts. Tests based on textbook & lectures. Overall, material is so interesting & I recommend this prof.
One of my favourite profs for sure. Dr. Check designs the course so students can do well, he helps us apply real-world issues to the course matter, and overall is very kind and a good teacher. 10/10 recommend and would take this class again if I could.
Professor is very chill and funny. Moreover, the TA Sarah is amazing!! I'm sure I couldn't do it well if TA is different. She is super supportive and caring. Generally, statistic itself is hard for me and I do not enjoy too much, but because of them, I could continue this course. I would take again if this prof has the same TA :)
Dr. Check's lectures were very enjoyable. While he does have a tendency go off topic, he's passionate and does a good job explaining concepts. The only evaluations for this course were three tests, primarily based on textbook and lecture material.
Dr. Check is very passionate and does a fantastic job explaining concepts. If you prefer professors who are straight to the point, look elsewhere. The only evaluations for this course were three tests consisting of both multiple choice and open-ended questions. I found that they were easy if you kept up with readings.
Great class! Really interesting content, and Dr. Check really does a good job making the content seem relevent and explains how concepts relate to everyday life. Lectures are long, but not too intense, and ended early a lot of the time. One of the easiest courses I've ever taken, so if you need a grade-booster, definitely take this course!!!!
The lectures are super confusing and tough to follow. Lectures don't match what is in the textbook and he doesn't post lecture notes either. Had to drop this course.
Not sure how this professor has gotten 4.6 here.I am suffering along with all my classmates. He is very unorganized and doesn't post notes. You will have to purchase a book that is close to $200 whereas for other professors there either no book or you will get free access to the book. On top of that he adds on things that are not part of the book.
By far one the BEST professors I've ever had. Application based lectures but very interesting , he teaches VERY well, super funny and tests have bonus marks!! I would defiantly take another class with him! The class is textbook heavy however exams only have 3-4 units on each. Plus, he posts a recording of all lectures so you can rewatch anytime.
Unorganized, does not post notes or PowerPoint, rude when you ask something, you will be studying by yourself.
He taught stats online and his lectures were very helpful. Professor Check is so sweet and accommodating. He cares for the success of his students, and his lectures are entertaining. His tests are straight forward along with the group project. I would take it again. His social psych course is also really good!
I had this online but with irl exams, I like that he gave bonus marks but honestly I don't like the way he teaches at all. The only reason I got a good grade is because the content is simple and straightforward. His lectures are pretty disorganized, unnecessarily long, and confusing. Seems like a nice guy, just not a great teacher.
Don't recommend. Grading only comes from exams & you need to understand and remember every word of the text to get an A. TA's were extremely rude to everyone, ignored emails, didn't allow to review tests. First test is 40% of the grade, 2nd 30% 3rd 30%. He wants students to not do well / doesn't care if TA's are rude / DOESN'T CARE ABOUT STUDENTS.
Sweet guy, but remarkably lazy. Conducted lectures from his cottage. No lecture slides, just extremely crudely written notes to be jotted down. Tests were challenging, asking about the most minute detail. TAs took many, many weeks to mark the tests.
He's a nice guy but he does not teach most of the material. You have to rely mostly on the textbook to pass the exams. His lectures covered only a few things and he does not have any slides.
Avoid at all costs because the professor and TAs take forever to grade tests. If you email them, expect an answer in three weeks or so. The test were okay but repetitive, and lectures never showed up in any tests. If this course is a prerequisite for another course, you won't have enough time to enrol in the new course since they grade slowly.
This professor made the course material very interesting while including real-life examples and getting a lot of discussion going during the lecture time. Tests are more textbook-based as well. However, the TAs for this class seemed absent for the entire semester. Emails were not answered for weeks and grades come out extremely late.
Kind professor, but classes were extremely boring. Maybe about 60% of his lectures were just talking about examples rather than the material itself. Also reads and explains pretty slowly to the point where a lot of people felt bored. Tests were also based on materials that weren't really covered in that much detail in the lecture.
Recorded lectures, watch at 2x speed starting 10 days before each test. Memorize major text concepts and key study findings. He is kind but lack professionalism and accountability. Deploys lectures from his cottage and his dog, albeit adorable, would bark often. TAs took very long to mark tests, rather than mark himself, he threw them under the bus
His textbook and what he taught were not on the same page. His class is basically him rereading and occasionally writing things on his Ipad. He had pre-handwritten notes that were so messy/illegible. There was free tutoring for every other class except us we weren't allowed. I also took his social psych and he was a better prof in that course.
Very lazy and only teaches about 10% of the content. Exams are textbook-based.
Not a very engaging course- lectures were pretty slow-paced and vague. Make sure to pay attention to stats from the textbook, as the exam includes specific examples [most of the exam is textbook-based]. There were also issues with grades being released on time and lack of communication, but hopefully that was a one-time thing...
This guy needs a lesson on how to create good visual aids for lectures. He teaches off of his iPad and throws together key words or concepts on his notes app probably 15 minutes before class starts like its actually pointless and annoying, slideshows can help improve student success and attentiveness a lot and he clearly does not understand that
Lectures seem pretty pointless. The exams are directly from the textbook- if you read and memorize it, you'll be fine.
Online not engaging at all, rambles on for hours about American Politics, Trump and Covid, doesn't have an active group chat for all, and never uses visual aids or powerpoint. Everything is written lazily on a iPad notepad, gives you 1 word as a "real life example" but has hardly illustrates the point well. Hard tests, memorize textbook or fail.
By far the worst professor I've seen here at York University. He is so not understanding of his students accommodations, and doesn't properly teach his lessons. He teaches off of his iPad using the notes app (self explanatory…). Ta's are such hard graders and overall the course is a mess.
Lectures can be dull, but the content is manageable if you focus on the textbook. Exams are fair if you prepare well. Definitely use Unstuck AI alongside the readings to boost your study efficiency.
Laziest prof I've had at York. I am a straight A student and this first exam I received a 57. Constantly discussing how he hates trump not relating to course material. All he does is posts lecture recording and tell you to read the text book. No slides, no other resources. Also unwilling to disclose class average. Red flag. Don't take his class.
Super disorganized, easily distracted, and often rambles with awkward jokes and unnecessarily hints at his obviously liberal political ideals. His notes are messy iPad scribbles, and he overcomplicates simple concepts, making the course harder than it is. gpt taught me his 2 hr lecture I was scratching my head for in seconds. Please veer far
He is lazy he teaches on his IPad notes and does not do powerpoint. I can't even understand his lectures because his handwriting on the notes is so messy. The lectures make no sense because he rambles on and does not get to the point and just throws in random formulas. Please if you care about your wellbeing don't take this course.
lectures were pointless but the things he does say in them show up in long answers of the tests. so i would just watch the lectures on 2x speed and do notes on them. the majority of the work comes from his multiple choice which are all from the textbook. as long as you read it and understand everything, you'll do good. overall, very straightforward
Prof. Check is an awesome lecturer and I really enjoyed his sense of humor. However, you have to be prepared to teach yourself and understand the material prior to his lectures as he does not take the time to teach you if you don't already know ahead of time. I would choose a different prof if I wasn't feeling confident of my knowledge in Stats.
At first, I thought he would be a cool, chill professor, but that changed quickly. His lectures are completely useless. Nothing mentioned in the lecture will ever be on the exams. You are graded on three exams, and no assignments would be fine if they were representative of what he is teaching. You are going to have to memorize the textbook.
BY FAR THE WORST PROF I HAVE EVER HAD. DOESN'T TEACH THE MATERIAL. EXAMS INCLUDE TRIVIAL INFORMATION. ASKS YOU FOR THE ‘MOST CORRECT' ANSWER WHEN MULTIPLE COULD BE TRUE DEPENDING ON CONTEXT. DOESN'T RESPOND TO EMAILS. IF YOU LIKE TEACHING YOURSELF AND LISTENING TO SOMEONE RAMBLE ABOUT NOTHING FOR 3 HOURS A WEEK TAKE THIS CLASS!!! :)
He's nice, but not the best at teaching. He presents his lectures through a notes app (doesn't post them). As a result, he'll constantly scroll up and down and it makes taking notes hard. The TAs I got were alright. I suggest watching the lecture recordings on 2x speed and read the textbook.
The worst professor I've had. He teaches on his iPad notes app and the content is completely unrelated to the textbook so idek what he's teaching (which is nothing!) He brags about his class averages being below 60, the exam multiple choice is IMPOSSIBLE and based on "concepts" he doesn't even teach. TA's were horrible and never replied to emails.
Be prepared to teach yourself. He uses his own notes app notes that are messy and difficult to read. I don't really know how people are actually learning in this class. I can never keep track of what he's talking about. I just end up teaching myself.
If you keep up with the reading, you don't really have to attend much of the lectures. There's a few points he makes in lecture that are used in short answer questions but the multiple choice questions are from the textbook. He provides good examples to help you remember concepts. The textbook is pretty simple text, not a difficult read.
At 1st, I thought he was ok, but after hearing about my friend's professor, I realized taking him was a mistake. His notes app visuals are messily handwritten, his explanations can overcomplicate straight-forward concepts, and while he's nice, it doesn't compensate such bare minimum lectures. This is a cry for help, leave while you still can.
WARNING! Do not, take this professor. Sure, he is a nice and sweet person. However, he is a terrible teacher. I'm a straight-A student, and got a 50 on the first exam. He has no slides, just sloppy, confusing, handwritten iPad notes. He is constantly off track, and makes simple concepts difficult. You will be teaching yourself or needing a tutor.
Prof kinda drags lectures and goes off topic a lot, makes lots of jokes which is cute but idk lots of time what he even talks about. Tests were fair, not tricky, and lots of bonus questions. The textbook is almost $200, even tho it is really good and clear, I feel robbed and you will really need the textbook to succeed.
This course was extremely difficult due to its delivery, not just the content. Lectures were disorganized, based on handwritten iPad notes with minimal explanation. Emails often went unanswered (so incredibly disorganized), including accommodation concerns. The course was test-heavy, rigid, and relied on an expensive, inaccessible textbook.
