His lectures make sense, just talks too much and plays chess in labs
helpful, but too fresh outta college. has too much sympathy for students. good teacher and knows his tihs though ;)
knows subj. well, clear lects. ; thorough, good empls. Study and Do Hmwk.. From other peopls accounts, you should count your lucky stars son. Before Cheney, studts. had to go through 4C hell for a semester with unforgiving retired instr.
Very easy class. Take alot of notes and review before tests. All you have to do is show up for the class, take good notes, and review. No homework, book optional, interesting class.. try not to get a morning class because it's easy to fall asleep
Great guy and a great teacher. Loved that class .. and yeah don't take a morning class .. it was easy to all asleep. I had a lot of fun in there.
Great speaker, very knowledgeable and thorough. Totally unappreciated when it comes to his impeccable subject organization and clarity. The flow of his lectures makes an otherwise daunting course extremely user-friendly. Recommended.
He is a great teacher, if you don't understand something, he'll explain it. He has these funny voices that he does when he's talking about old astronomers, and his lectures are a little boring, but the last couple months of class they get interesting.
Teachear is thorough, patient, witty, and fair. Thats a bunch of great qualities in a teacher and rarely seen in most teachers. Makes boring subject interesting. Entertains and addresses questions directly with detail and some humor. Highly suggested!
Very good teacher. He made astronomy a fun subject and was very nice to listen to. Write down everything that goes on the board, he uses only that stuff on tests and quizes...no need for a book. Very funny. Highly reccomended.
very easy teacher, gets off subject alot, but regardless you'll have a great time in his class he is very funny, but make sure to do the homework even though he usually doesn't require you to turn it in.
Cheney is a really good teacher at relating material. He's very clear and does a good job at explaining the subject. However, he's extremely lazy. You just have to watch out because he doesn't return much work. And you just might end up with a C.
He teaches excellently. homework is very important. If you spend a lot of time on the homework, you can get an A in the class. On quizes, make answers clear. If he can't see where you're going on a question, he'll give it a few points and dismiss it. Remember to draw pictures for problems.
So easy to get off-topic and does not cover all the material that the comparable course (phys 40b at ucr) covers, so you are behind when you transfer. If a student was as lazy as him, the student would completely fail.
not helpful, he just lazy, doesn't care too much and that makes the class SEEMINGLY easy.
I can see why some think he's lazy or goes off topic. He seems concerned with more important things; such as returning quizzes instead of homework or focusing on important concepts instead of calculations that anyone can do. I guess I'll truly know if he taught us what was needed when I take Ast1B.
Talks to you as if you are 5 years old. Constantly asks unnecessary stupid questions and expects an answer. He's very easy, much easier than blair. If you want to learn more take Blair, if you want a good grade and just need the class to gradutate take Cheney.
Class is easy and if you review the notes you won't have much trouble on quizzes or exams. No need to purchase text because all his quiz and exam questions are from his lectures. Go to class and take notes.
Very easy, doesn't require much from his students except for some common sense to understand the concepts. Makes the class interesting too, and makes you wanna go just to hear what he'll say next.
Very easy teacher! Fun and entertaining, and you learn a lot from what he says!
Great teacher. Gets off topic, but really fun lectures. He's almost too clear and helpful when it comes to solving problems. He gives you everything you need to figure something out, so you don't think about the concepts as much and therefore don't learn it as well. Overall, he's awesome. One of my favorite professors.
This class was quiet enjoyable..talks alot but makes learning fun..easy class if you take good notes.
Easy class, very helpful, but he's a lazy, ugly goit. The topics covered in this class will pop up all over the place if you're a science or engineering major, and you won't know anything about them if you take Cheney's class. :(
Good teacher, very organized and helpful when you have questions.
Great teacher. Learned a lot. He is pretty cool with the class if the class is cool with him and treats him with respect. He doesnt make the quizzes or tests too hard so just study what he tells you. Love his class, would take again!
he is a very hard teacher. he does not teach everything on how to solve problems.nevr returned quizes, tests, or h.w. really hard to pass the class.
James Cheney is a great instructor. Astronomy has always been interesting to me, especially the historical aspect, and with his quirky sense of humor and random enthusiasm, he finds easy ways for his students to learn a complicated subject. One quiz every week and he tells you what's going to be on it. Midterm is easy. Great teacher!
do not buy the book. class consists of 10 quizes that are solely based on his lectures. gives 3 tests and guess what, those come directly from the 10 quizes. in simple terms, show up, listen, take mediocre notes and recieve an A. funny facial expressions too and speaks to you like you're 2 which is good!
He is a really cool guy.. very laid back, funny.. kinda looks like Drew Carrey... Anyways, he is very bad at handing assignments back, never even handed anthing past the first test and quiz.... Test are fairly difficult, fun labs!
Iono how good he is yet, but he looks like drew carey and sloth from Goonies put together. Hes funny, but not too helpful, night lecture is better, cuz he can get through more stuff than in the 1 hour day lectures.
Cmon guys, dont give him such a hard time. he explains the rules for solving each type of problem, follow the rules, and your fine. Do homework, dont B.S. it, because tests are similar to homework. for quizzes, he picks 2 problems from homework and quizzes you on them each week. Kick back kinda guy, but doesnt return assignments. Funny guy.
Very disorganized. Came to class late and he would rush through the material. He assumes that everyone knows what he is talking about and doesnt take his time to stop and make sure that the class is understanding. He doesnt return your work back.
honestly, this class is great! He wants you in class, but he knows life has its road blocks. work is EASY. not really disorganized. He may go off on the subject, but really, he knows what he's talking about and gives you more insite about the subject. The problem is he takes longer than needed and won't finish the list on the board.
very helpfull. Puts all information in practical use terms. Highly recommended by me (a student with +60 units)
Hes a real cool teacher, jus show up take a lil notes and u should get a B or an A for sure. PS Do Not Buy The Book, You Wont Use It At All.
He's a cool teacher. Doesn't mind answering your ?'s that u have. Funny sometimes. but if don't answer his Monday ?'s he gets kind of irritated. U have hw due every Friday. quiz every wed. from the notes u take on Monday. pretty simple. Easy A. TAKE THIS CLASS!!!DON'T buy the book like I did.
he is a great teacher super funny super clear every thing he says is helpful easy if you do HW and show up most of the time great class easy b if u try and the HW basically is the test
Hardest class i have EVER taken, but most helpful teacher I've ever had. Gives 10hw problems a week, 1 quiz a week on 2hw questions, and a test every 4 weeks. Have trouble with the hw, send him an email and he'll answer you within the hour and help you until you get it no matter how long it takes. So overall he is a great teacher, but hard class
Fine&Clear Professor.Class is Simple:Lecture everyday,one simple 10 question-quiz&one simple HW weekly,Test every few Chapters.Just show up,take notes,do HW,take quiz and tests and pass.Take him.
Quite breezy if you have common sense.
Very sharp and interesting teacher. He also has a great sense of humor. It might be hard to get hold of him, but if you manage to do so he will take his time to answer all the questions. He has a rare ability to simplify concepts using examples and analogies. Physics was not an easy class for me, but Cheney made it easier and much more fun.
Great teacher! Very Helpful! Takes time to explain. Cares about students.
Honestly: funny teacher, great to talk to but, This guy does not care about students education. I quote the words from him:"Im here because they pay me." If you dont answer problems his way, you will fail. you can get every answer right, but they will be counted wrong if its not his way. If you really want to learn PHYICS dont take this guy!.
This is quite possibly one of the worst teachers at RCC. He honestly doesn't care about your knowledge of physics (well, he honestly doesn't care about anything but his paycheck). He will give points for setting problems up his way and getting wrong answers, but even if you show your work clearly, if it's not his way, it's 0. DO NOT take his class
omg! most fun, and so hilarious iwish all my classes had this kinds prof. seriously though the book is useless i bought it for nothing =( be in class and write verything he says, do the homework and A's the test/quiz. =D
WHAT ARE YOU TWO TALKING ABOUT OH MY GOD. he is the easier teacher i have taken! you probibly didnt even do well due to ur lack of attendance and attention. seriously pay attention and take notes you will Ace this class. DONT BUY THE BOOK!! lol quizes are easy and test are easier. =D iwi sh all my teachers were as easy as he is.
This teacher is one of the worst teachers I have ever have. He wants the students to know everything he knows, and if you don't know he makes you feel like if you are retarded, almost as if he makes fun of us. He answered emails rarely and if the work was not done his way, everything was wrong. It is worth searching another school for this class.
What are you guys talking about?! He's extremely helpful, and actually does care about his students. Has a great sense of humor makes physics enjoyable. Clearly if you didn't do well in this class you don't know how to follow directions, and didn't email/see him personally for help on the homework. Yes, the class is hard, but he's there to help!
Very disorganized, this class is should be a 12 unit course on its own, don't expect an A unless you have a background of physics. Harsh grader on tests, rushes through chapters and expects you to understand a chapter in 30 mins. Wastes time deriving formulas rather than explaining...starts chapters before we even finish the ones we just learned
Yeah this dude is unorganized, rushes through lectures, and at times makes tests harder on purpose...but if you do what he tells you to do and ask him nicely for assistance (not to do the whole freakin' problem!), then you will get the grade you want/ deserve.
Took him for AST1A. He is really funny and smart. Also very flexible when it comes to turning in homework a little late or making up a quiz, as long as you're reasonable. DON'T buy the book. Go to class, write down everything he writes on the board, study your notes, and you'll do fine.
Lecture: Easy to understand, but he spends too much time on review and outlines. Homework: problems he makes up are not. Most solutions involve something "subtle" and are more about math tricks than physics. good portion of his own answers are wrong. Lab: seems only half prepared. Tests: Just like the homework. Does grade on some kind of cu
He's so nerdy it's cute! This class is not only interesting, but he makes it really easy for students to pass. He has a great sense of humor that alone makes you want to attend the class. Go to class everyday and write down everthing. I bought the book just to read for fun, but in actuality you never use it. I highly recommend him!
Is it weird that I ended up really enjoying this class? Yeah the class is hard, but come on it's physics what did you expect. He's extremely helpful he'll answer any of your questions until you actually get the problem. I'll never understand why people complain about him. I consider him to be one of the best professors at RCC.
I loveee him!:) One of the best teachers I've ever taken @ RCC. He is so funny and outgoing. He makes the lectures really fun & enjoyable. Really good sense of humor. I would definitly recommend him! :D
Seriously, if you cannot PASS this class then something is wrong with you. It was as easy as doing the assigned homework and showing up to class. If you can do that, then the quizzes/exams are way too simple. Plus, Cheney is hilarious.
I took him before for Physics and didn't like him, but warily took this class and thoroughly enjoyed him! He spends a big portion of class in a big history lesson and I loved it. Don't buy the book if you don't want to--not needed--get the cheap older ed if U do. Take good notes & study them, do your hmwrk off them, U'll have a near perfect score
Class is very fun and hilarious. Mr. Cheney is a very unique person and is a comedian in his own way. Things to know before taking this class: 1.No book is needed. 2.Write everything he writes on the board. 3. Study for quizzes every week! Do the HW. I took Physics and got an A
Science is not my subject. Professor was fun, my favorite class of the semester! Quiz every week, 3 exams and 1 final. you don't have to try too hard to pass. I didn't buy the book. homework is assigned every week.
THE MOST HELPFUL AND BEST PHYSICS PROFESSOR EVER. IF YOU GET ANYTHING LESS THAN AN A YOUR JUST LAZY CAUSE HE PROVIDES ALL THE HELP YOU NEED AND IS ALWAYS AVAILABLE TO HELP. HES ALSO FUNNY AND VERY SMART.
love him. hes so smart it's sexy, and baby got back.
LOVED this class. I was dreading taking physics, but he made it so enjoyable. One of my favorite professors. Attendance is mandatory for a good grade. Take good lecture notes, quizzes are based off of them, and exams are almost the exact same problems from the quizzes. You'll never open the text book. Homework is easy. Easy A.
I took AP physics in HS and he definitely makes it more complicated than it should be. He's a very smart professor but seems to dislike a bunch of questions, makes you feel stupid while your at it. If you good at Physics and have a strong grasp of some basics Calculus you should do okay but if not stay clear away!
If you know some phy you'll do okay, but does demand a lot of studying away from class, def not a gimme. C is attainable but not easy
Hes one that really makes the class easy, that is if you follow his methods for solving the problems. Its physics so expect to do some work. If you get stuck you can email him a question and he usually gets back to you in a day or two. Very open during office hours too. He does get upset if you dont answer his questions in like 2 seconds but its ok
cheney is one of the most clear instructors rcc has. his presentation is miles ahead of anything i've seen. unfortunately he is very micromanagey. tests(easy) and homework(hard) grading are heavily based on presentation rather than knowledge. labs follow this trend. the degree of control isnt describable in 350 characters. still better than others
Cheney is a great instructor. He is available for help all the time by email which helped me pass the class with an A. He is hilarious and passionate about physics. Homework is hard, but if you understand it then you will have no problem with the tests.
The best professor ever I have ever met in my study life! Very helpful like he will respond to your emails for the longest day is 2 days. He tells you what he wants for the test and he tests on that. Nothing tricky in the class as long as you do the homework. Wish there are many professors like him out there!
AWESOME teacher for physics. He attempts to relate it to everyday life as much as possible and make the class fun. Very prompt on emailing & very open if you have questions. Makes class fun & interesting. He doesn't provide problem examples but more definitions which is only downfall. Definitely recommend. LOVES to socialize!
I had never taken a physics class before in my life so I struggled in 2A. He gives webassign homework and written homework. His written homework is very difficult, but he does that on purpose. There will be problems that are too difficult to solve on your own and you need to email him. I worked very hard and still got a B. First and only B.
Professor Cheney is condescending. Always. It is a general agreement among students that he makes you feel stupid every time you ask a question. That being said, he will email you back every time you ask a question. He is clear about how he wants you to get things done, but only teaches one way to solve problems.
If understand algebra you'll do fine. However, this professor is very set in his ways. He will make you feel like an idiot if you ask questions during lecture and expects you to point out his mistakes, even though he gets upset if you do (even during exams). If you work, it is very difficult to mange the amount of hw which is crucial to your grade.
Cheney will make you feel like a fool, yes, but he will go to incredible lengths to make sure that the information reaches you and you have the tools to succeed. If you email him a one sentence question he will write back an entire page with explanations and attach a picture. Swallow your pride and take this guy if you want to learn. Loves stories.
Professor Cheney is a good professor. The biggest thing is to ask for help if you need it. He's really great at giving feedback, but will only do so if you ask. His homework is usually harder than the exams, so if you know how to do the homework, you'll be just fine. I would say he is pretty lenient on grading, but his labs can be a pain.
Cheney changed what I expect from my professors (raised the bar). Lectures are fun and easy; he'll spend half the time telling stories. Homework will kick you ass, but he's always available to help. He'll spend an hour explaining if that's what it takes. Picky about labs, but well-intentioned. Tests are moderate difficulty.
Great professor, easy class. Professor Cheney has a rigid structure to solve different physic problems, which is beneficial for many students, but may not be practical if you are going into engineering/ physics which would require more thinking and creativity. But if you just want to solve problems and ace tests, his method is good!
Me and a friend were behind 2 chapters, so we stopped by on a day lab was canceled and he took his time explaining every little detail. He made fun of us for being behind but I know how to take a joke (unlike some of the reviewers who felt put down). Favorite teacher. Email him anything, he'll explain it like he was ready for that email.
He's pretty cool, and his lectures can be fun, but he's really over teaching physics, and he made that very clear to us. It's hard to be excited about a class when the professor hates his job and translates this hate into basically every aspect of the course. Some of the 2A/2B people might disagree, but he's just different for 4C. Don't take for 4C
Cheney is a great teacher! He makes physics fun and he clearly cares about his students. Usually very quick to respond to emails for help. Super energetic in lectures and labs. I really enjoyed his classes (took 2B with him too)
Cheney was pretty much my favorite human from fall 17 through spring 18. I hated physics going in but he made a good grade accessible. He gave me a run for my money when it came to sarcasm which made class all the more enjoyable.
Professor Cheney is a great professor! I took him for Phy 2A & 2B. I took physics in the past and didn't understand it but Professor Cheney made everything clearer. I actually enjoy physics now. He is always willing to help his students so go to his office hours if you need help! You can ace the exam if you understand the written and online HW!
Best physics instructor at the RCC campus. He explains the material very well and offers notes on his website for homework problems + tests. If you want a professor that teaches you how to break down a problem to explain the laws and math behind it well, take him. <- Greatest skill to take from here is how to solve problems even outside of physics.
AMAZING EXPERIENCE!!!! Cheney's teaching style genuinely spiked my interest and anyone else who takes him truly enjoys it. He'll inspire you to enjoy physics.
Professor Cheney is amazing and I can't recommend him enough. He's very passionate about physics, and is really motivated to make sure that you understand what he is teaching. He explains the material crystal clear, and gives great feedback/help on his website. His class isn't easy but he gives you absolutely everything you need +more to succeed.
he is a nice and funny prof. kinda quirky. he really tries to get us to understand but i was hopeless so i had to drop the class. i spent all my free time for a week trying to complete the hw and i just couldnt figure it out. so ask for help early and you'll do great. dont wait until after you fail the first test lol
i wasnt the biggest fan because he was kinda rude sometimes. i didnt learn well with his teaching style and he didnt really help when i explained that. the tests were really difficult because there were only a few questions which means you basically have to get all of them right. i dont recommend this class for online.
Simply put hes not good for online classes. He only accepts his methods of work so if you dont understand his teaching youll fail. He will not let you know your grade or exam scores so you wont know how youre doing until the day grades are due. tests are difficult and even the homework is graded on correctness, so passing is difficult. stay away.
Very thoughtful Professor. He makes YouTube videos for EACH WebAssign homework problem to help you solve the questions ALSO written help if you dont want to watch the whole video. He spends lots of time making up labs and lab videos and makes this easy for us to understand. Only complaint is that he is very slow on grading.
I do not recommend this online class with a heavy workload, because Cheney will make you WORK. But I have yet to have a professor who put the magnitude of effort he did. Cheney had Zoom, pre-recorded Youtube lectures aside from Zoom, videos for the hw, videos for the midterm-hw, & videos for the labs. All with pdf sheets 2 explain everything.
He is one of the best professors for science/math. he makes videos for us to understand including hw/exam videos. his written hw, apart from regular webassign hw is basically the exams itself. the written hw is a bit harder but once you email him or ask him to show example in class, he will help you no matter what. he wants his students to succeed.
TAKE HIM! He teaches you in 3 ways: zoom lectures, YT videos, & written notes! He replies emails quickly in great detail if you ask him a question. He genuinely wants his students to succeed. Exams are similar to webassign & HW problems. No surprises. Best professor I've had. He makes physics incredibly easy to understand.
Take this Professor! Physics can be quite intimidating but he makes it so approachable. Make sure you do the online homework and watch the accompanying videos that he posts. The key, at least online, is just repetition of what he teaches. He is very accommodating and helpful when you are lost.
100% take this professor! for physics lab he provides a lecture, explanation of the procedure, written lab, video explaining how to work on excel and videos regarding the data. This class was pretty easy and if you need help you can email him and he will respond right away!for physics 11 we had no test/quiz. Only bad part is he sucks on grading lol
Honestly, one of the best professors I have ever had. Super considerate, and you can tell he genuinely cares about his students. I have dealt with a lot this semester and he has been so kind and understanding. His videos for the labs are also great, because he makes them fun and can joke around. Absolutely take this teacher! He is amazing.
Prof. Cheney is extremely quick at replying to emails! If you need help, he's there. He's also flexible with teaching! He has online lectures, help for labs, and live lectures; you can pick your preferred method of learning. Just be wary that the homework and exams he has are more difficult than lecture and WebAssign (online hw).
Super easy class, he post exactly how to do the labs. You do need a laptop that can use excel to take this class. He does the labs so you don't need to buy anything for it. Each lab takes anywhere from 30 min to 90 min. It might take longer but i put the videos in 1.5x-2x speed. You don't have to do any math excel does it all for you.
Professor Cheney is probably the best professor ever. He records his lectures, videos for homework help and so much more. He's so dedicated to his students and reply to emails super fast. Like with everything, practice makes perfect so pay attention to his homework and WebAssign problems because his exams are very similar.
Prof Cheney is one of a kind! If you email him any questions regarding homework, he will give you a very thorough explanation on how to approach the problem. Labs are very simple & straightforward. There are 4 exams & the final which was overwhelming. Although he takes a while to grade the exams, he wants to make sure that you're given a fair score
Cheney is a very good instructor. He tells you exactly what is needed to pass & how to achieve it. Tests are difficult but manageable with good studying. A decent amount of homework assigned but is needed to do well in the class. He makes learning physics simplier & explains very well & in detail. He is very caring & funny. I do recommend him.
Loved Professor Cheney! He structures his lessons so it's easier to understand the material. The homework questions and concepts are crucial to doing well on exams. Always available through email for homework help. Has trivia questions for us at the beginning of each lecture, which made it fun. Labs are easy to understand as well.
HW heavy. HW = good exam score. Exams are structured based on HW. Lenient w/ lab. Can attend any of the days for lab if u have a scheduling conflict. Grade is heavily dependent on exams, redo the HW until u understand the process going on. Gives equation sheet so no need to memorize. Lecture is late @ night. Funny lectures, funny guy, chill class.
As a person, he's a cool guy, as a professor he's discouraging. He is VERY condescending if you don't understand something & asking him questions can be daunting. His obsession with simplifying things makes them more complex and you are only allowed to solve problems his way on exams, if not, then no credit. Homework is exactly like exams though.
Honestly, not sure if i am the problem or if its the way he teaches. Overall good personality but not very good at teaching. Prefers to talk about old dead white people, units, doing mental math or goes on random tangents and when he finally gets to the physics part,he rushes. Kinda belittles you when you ask a question making you feel horrible.
Never shows up to office hours Lecture is all history, very little substance Sets up problems but doesn't solve them Pads his statistics, rounded the top 20 grades to As despite only 12 earning said As Homework is all online, one attempt per problem, problem changes each attempt. This is the worst class I've ever had the displeasure of taking.
not the best professor i've taken but the fact i could email him at 2am and get a response within the next hour was pretty great when confused on the homework. i had a few issues with how he taught but besides that it was fine.
Avoid taking
Professor Cheney makes physics approachable with his thorough videos and accommodating teaching style. The homework is challenging but helpful for exams. Leverage unstuckstudy along with the textbook to master the material.
Don't take if you struggle with ADHD. He says his work is easy and that everyone should get it. Yet, I disagree; not everyone's brain's are wired the same.
He puts your critical thinking to work. You're taking physics to be prepared for problem solving & your future career! The lectures can be a little crazy, but he tries to give steps for it. He gives a lil' history behind each concept to establish connections to the real world. Tests are basically homework + you can talk to him if you need help.
Interesting lectures sometimes on theory and straighforward on what to expect. For a B, you just need a 70 average on tests and get all yours HW/Labs done. For a A, you need a 85-90% average on tests which isn't too hard considering they are like the HW. Overall, a chill class.
Homework-practice it, there's no surprises on exams. He tells you exactly how he wants things, just because you understand the material doesn't mean you'll succeed. Learn to be neat, label clearly, and write your computations legiable and easy to follow. Won't need outside resources to understand course material. Amazing Professor, learned a lot.
The HW is super helpful for exams and he is lenient on deadlines for HW. He is passionate, reasonable, gives great lectures, and wants you to learn. You are given equation sheets to use during exams, but his exams are still meant to challenge you, which they do. No complaints, he is great and I regret not taking him for 4A or 4B.
