Point Blank People: Chemistry is hard! If you think this class is hard then get out of the nursing program! If you try and talk to Dr. Collins about your problems he will help you out! Wait until 1130..it just gets worse.
Yes this class is hard, no matter who you have...You have to study!! If you read and go to class it is not that bad... If you know the material you will do fine.
he sucks, hes unfair and should stop teaching for everyones sake. thanks to him i have to work harder to bring up my gpa
Dr. Collins wants his students to succeed. Go to class, study, and meet with him if you are having problems. This is not an easy class, but if you put the effort into it then you will get an A or B. Dr. Collins is more then willing to work with his students to discuss problems that they may be facing. I would take him again.
Really bad teacher! I failed his class
I though he was a good teacher. Sometimes he was unable to answer questions, but he did make an effort to. His tests were very straight forward, so if you know the material you will do well on them. Basically, he teaches chemistry like a math course, so be prepared to learn a lot of formulas and be able to use them.
Horrible Class. The tests are worded insanly hard. They are multiple choice but they are still almost impossible to get an A on. Homework is easy but the exams will definately bring your grade down. Take another professor.
This class is hard no matter what, but there ARE BETTER teachers than him. He cannot teach. Find another professor for chemistry- he's awful. He's rude. Stay FAR, FAR AWAY.
HE IS REDICULOUS!!! I have taken his class twice and i still have absolutley NO clue what he's talking about! his tests make no sense and he sounds like he doesnt know what he's talking about!!
Dr. Collins is a wonderful man, if you get to know him. However, his tests are ridiculously hard. He is not able to answer questions competently, even in his office. The Homework is fine, but none of it appears on the test... he does not test on what he emphasizes in class. If you have to take him, READ THE BOOK... it's your only chance!!!
The worst teacher i have ever had. I went to his office many times asking for help and he just told me to do better, never helped me. His tests are very difficult because he trys to trick you. Most of his class fails.
He's a nice guy but his tests are WAY too hard. I studied for days and still failed his tests because he tries to trick you. This class is impossible.
His test are horrible. It is impossible to pass his exams its like a trick. He doesnt test on what he says in class. He doesnt give study guides only problems from the book which arent help at all. You never know what to expect on his exams some are mostly calculations but most are on concepts. Dont take him, most of the class failed his exams.
Collins has a bad rep but he's really a wonderful guy. He shows lots of enthusiasm for teaching and he does his best to help his students. However, his tests are WAY too hard. If you're not a good test-taker DO NOT take him!! There is homework, but no quizzes to help out your average. You will have to study A LOT if you take him!
This class is rediculous, I have never studied this much to make a D! Until this class I had all As and Bs. Spending hours and hours studying didnt seem to help either. I dont mean a few hours, I mean over 10 the day before, not counting what you need to do everyday! If you want to get a C or better DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! I heard Evans was good.
Horrible >> Visiting Assistant Professor. He has not even earned a position at ECU and should not. He leaves town after giving final exam and doesn't give students the opportunity to ask questions and go over scores. He is honestly one of the worst chemistry professor at ECU. Don't waste your time or money on this guy.
WONDERFUL PROFESSOR!! Chemistry is hard no matter what. Don't listen to all these slackers. There were people in my class that have taken this 3 times already and its because they don't put in any effort. He does care about you. I had hundreds of questions everyday. If you act interested he will help you, act like you don't care and so will h

He is very helpful and a great teacher. Holds study sessions. His test are very, very difficult though. I would recommend taking this class if you have tons of time to study. Taking this and having a job is very hard because of the huge amount of time needed to spend studying. Does not use as much math as I thought and for me that makes it harder.
He is very helpful to anyone that asks for help!! He has study sessions and an open door policy. He will not baby you but is VERY FAIR, all you have to do is ask. He wants his students to do well but think for themselves. He is a nice guy and a good teacher but you have to do your part and study.
Dr. Evans is no doubt one of the few best chemistry professors at ECU. Collins is truely one of the worst. I have talked to many ECU students that are taking chemistry else where besides ECU.
He needs to get out ECU as soon as possible. Cant have him, he is horrible
Okay.....don't listen to any negative comments. I took Dr. Collins in the freakin summer and made an A. You have to go to class everyday and study pretty much everyday. If you don't, you will fail and that is not his fault. Ask questions and act interested and he will remember you and help you. Act like you don't care and so will he.
Doesn't teach well in my opinion!

I think Dr. Collins knows what he is doing, he has a doctorate in it after all, but I don't think he knows how to explain it. He may be a good scientist, but he is a lousy teacher and he is always staring at people.
horrible teacher, grades hard, doesnt knwo what hes talking about
Dr. Collins is a smart man, but he absolutely sucks at teaching. He cannot convey the information to students well...if you take this class, be prepared to teach yourself the material because he won't do it. Lost my scholarship because of this class. Do recommend him.
He does stare at people.. its true, and i agree he is a very smart man, but that doesnt mean that he can teach! He understand alot, but can not explain it to make me understand!
SUCH a difficult class, it's so hard to understand what he's saying and if you ask him to explain he never really clears it up. He may be smart and know his chemistry but he acts like you are supposed to know everything in a FRESHMAN chem course! avoid taking him if you can!
Get ready to memorize EVERYTHING. I couldn't understand him, but he posted slides and agendas online...he still talked to the board though. The clickers are annoying...no ones ever worked...and they cost $50. Homework was due every week out of the book. I just get depressed thinking about this class. No matter how much I thought I understood a
Dr. Collins is hard and he doesn't really care if you don't understand something! If you try to ask him a question, he acts like you are an idiot!
Dr.Collins is horrible! He doesn't explain things well, you have to teach yourself. I went to class everyday, read every chapter, did HW, studied my ass off for every test, and still FAILED! His tests are so HARD and TRICKY! The hours I spent studying were for nothing. He is not helpful at all, and obviously doesn't care!
Dr Collins is awful. yes you can go to him, but he just sits and looks at you like you are freakin retarted or something. CHANGE PROFESSORS if you get him!! he knows chem but doesnt know how to teach!
HOW IS THIS GUY STILL TEACHING.. I HAD HIM LIKE2 YEARS AGO AND HE WAS SUPPOSED TO BE GETTING FIRED.. WTF???? HES AWFUL FAILED HIS CLASS TWICE....
if you dont like or even know chemistry do not take this class it is very difficult to understand andhe does not help you out alot he is always there though
Very nice professor. He genuinely cares about his students, I never left class or lab without him smiling at me as if to say 'did you understand everything?'. However- I rarely understood anything, it was so hard, even if I did, the exams killed me. I probably failed- am waiting on my final onestop posting.
First of all Chemistry is a hard class to begin with so expect to work really hard. Dr. Collins is good because he posts his notes on blackboard and he is available and if you make him see that you care then he cares. Im not going to completely blame him but his tests are HARD! GO TO CLASS and be ready to work if you arent then take someone else!!
Collins isn't that bad of a teacher. The information is hard because most of it is concepts that we've never used before. Read the book...IT HELPS ALOT. Also go to see Mr. Collins in his office and ask him questions after class. Make sure he knows that you are trying because if he sees that then he'll curve the grade in the end. Good Luck!
chemistry is not an easy class in the first place. if you are looking for an easy way out, this is not the teacher. however if you are willing to put time aside to study, this class is very doable. read the book and study the powerpoints and you will be fine. i studied 2 days before each test and ended up with a B in the class.
First of all, Chemistry is not easy. You can't expect to get an A offhand. You have to work for it. Read the book, go to class, do homework and you should be fine. He is really not as bad as everybody says he is.
Terrible teacher! He is really hard and isn't willing to answer the questions you ask. you have to study and GO TO CLASS....AND PAY ATTENTION. and mabye you will pass...
Chemistry is hard. There is no way around that. But Dr. Collins is not a bad teacher. He will go over something again if you ask him to, and he is nice enough during office hours that he will help. I went to class every day, and although I was in the top 15 in every graded catagory, I only got a B. His class is *not* easy; it can be passed.
Not as bad as people make him out to be. All the powerpoint slides are online so it is easy to follow along in class. The course is quite difficult but if you study, come to class & do the homework you will be fine.
This man is a horrible teacher. He wasted my time to get up and be in his class at 8 am. You learn on your own, he teaches you nothing. I did great on his homework assignments but his tests are messed up,I failed them. Don't take him if you are a nursing major, you will never get into nursing school.
Worst professor i have ever had
Not a very good chem 1120 teacher. He knows the material but does not explain it well at all and when he does he explains it he just repeats himself. His exams are extremely hard especially the final. I had to retake it becasue I made a D and made an A in with a different professor.
dont take
Study and memorize his slides and you will do fine. Go to him if you don't understand and he will be happy to help. I made an A all of his exams and the final by studying a little bit each day.
Chemistry is not going to be easy. I think Dr. Collins did a really good job covering the material. Study everyday. Do not be afraid to go to his office and ask for help. You will be fine.
Great teacher. I was grade replacing this class and got an A. He gives power point notes, teast are based on the power point notes. He is very helpful, all you have to do is ask. The only requirement is that you study. C'mon, its science, not under-water basket weaving.
HIS TEST ARE HARD and you never know what is going to be on the test. He moves 2 fast
Maybe it's because I'm a chemistry major and I had already taken 3 semesters of chem in high school, but I liked Collins. He's a cool guy and very smart and you can tell he knows his stuff. I love the clicker method he uses and the webassign for homework (you get 5 chances to but in the right answer). I am taking his 1160 class next semester.
He's a nice guy but hes not the easiest teacher... If you take this class you better be able to teach yourself.
good guy, you need to know the slides inside and out. Also do the homework and ask questions if you don't get something. the test are really hard so you have to study a whole lot. this is a hard course
His test are way too hard. I study for this course harded than any other class and still can't pull higher than a B. Unlike Gerow, he does NOT curve. I wish he would! So basically over 50% of the class will fail. He's a nice guy, but the test are extremely hard and you never know what will be on it.
Do NOT take Dr. Collins unless you HAVE to. I took Honors Chem in high school, passed with an A+, and loved it. This guy does not know how to teach. He knows the material but can not convey the information in a way students can understand it. STAY FAR FAR AWAY
Not Recommended!!!!!!!
Dr. Collins is an exremely nice man. However, his tests are hard and he doesn't exactly prepare you for what's on it the way he should. There are no quizzes, 4 exams, and webassign for every chapter. He is willing to help but does not really explain well. You should only take with prior exposure to chemistry.
It was hard. Really hard. He's such an intelligent man, but he was not meant to be a teacher. Really, don't take his class. I'm degree in three & I'm grade replacing.
Dr. Collins tried hard to be helpful. There was not a class before mine in the room that we met in on Fridays, so he allowed people to come 30 min. early for exams. If you had a class before his you had 30min less than everyone else to take the exams. Not good at explaining. Iclicker means you MUST go to class in order to receive points. Very hard.
To the "degree in three" person who posted recently: Maybe you should consider the "degree in four" since you need to grade replace general chemistry! This stuff isn't a cake walk people, but if you STUDY at home and don't expect to be spoonfed everything, you will do fine. Dr. Collins does a fine job teaching the material. Go home and study it!
To the person who had something to say about the degree in three, just stop being so jealous mr.degree in four. Collins has a hard time teaching, so he knows the material but cant relate it back to the students. Not a good professor.
He is a chemist... Not a teacher. Do not take this class. He does not answer questions and his test are impossible. I am so lucky to have pulled off a C in this class...I regret taking him and I feel unprepared for Chem 1130. If you are a nursing major, do not risk getting a bad grade in this class. It will kill your GPA. Stay away!!!
He is a very hard teacher. But if you go to his office to ask questions he is very helpful and cares about your grade. His class is very boring and its hard to get much out of it. Try to pay attention and READ THE BOOK and look over the slides he gives you.
He wasn't that bad of a teacher that everyone else made him out to be. You just have to actually DO the webassigns and they'll definitly help out on the tests. He's not as hard as Hammond thank god. I worked hard and got a B but thats bc I hate chem with a passion. He is soft spoken and uses an iclicker for particiation so attendance is mandatory
when i signed up for this class i looked at these rating on rate my professor and it scared me to death. but i still took the class and made an A. i have never taken chem before not even in high school so if i can make an A anyone can. he is helpful and alot better than Gerow so if you are a nursing major he is the only choice. you have to STUDY.
A very nice man that gets frusterated w/ kids that still think they are in high school. I had a very hard time with the class and pulled a B. Do all the homework and go to him with questions. He is very helpfull. STUDY STUDY STUDY and you will do fine. His tests are VERY hard but they prepare you well for the final. Good guy. Good luck!
He is the worst chem professor ever! You have iclicker questions which require you to be there, but they don't help. You get 3 points for getting them right, but only 1 point for getting them wrong. I was there everyday and had a C for participation. He makes his tests extremely hard and offers very little help. Avoid him at all costs!
GREAT professor if you really want to learn something about chemistry. Alot of students fail his class because they never show up, study and prepare for exams. His gives homework and iclicker as 20% of your total final grade and that's 2 letter grade! If you don't do on his exams you still could end up with a letter or two letter grades better. :)
Dr. Collins is a great professor. He cares about his students' success and hosts review sessions prior to test which are really helpful. he also has open office hours which are beneficial. his class can be hard at times, but what chemistry class isn't.
Dr. Collins is a hard but great professor. He tries very hard, go to him with questions, he really wants you to do well. Very knowledgeable and prepares you well for the next level of chem. Had him for 2 classes and did well, but studyied my butt off. Would definitely take him again.
Worst teacher ever! What he teaches in class is different than his tests. I even had a tutor and that did not help. It got to the point where I had two exams left and there was no way I could have passed even if I made 100 on both tests! VERY BAD! GET OUT WHILE YOU CAN! (unless you love chemistry and math)
Not a great teacher at all. What he teaches in class is not how the questions are set up on the exam. Also he makes you do webassign which is by far one of the worst chem computer programs i have ever used.
hard teacher if you do not like or understand chemistry. he doesn't explain things very well, but he tries to be helpful. he always tries to go to class an hour early if you need extra help. Homework isn't too long or hard. iclicker is easy and counts a lot towards your grade. tests aren't like the homeworks or lectures. nice guy though
He is so boring...his voice is really monotone and its hard to pay attention in class. Tests are hard even if you study and he gives webassign homework and iclicker questions in class. Not to mention how much money I spent on the required materials. I wouldn't recommend him to anyone!
He is very nice, and helps out a lot! Go to him with questions and he will do his best to explain it to you!
If you want a good grade in chemistry, get out while you can!!! What he teaches in class has nothing do do with the 1150 labs. So, if you have him for 1150 there is no way you will do well in 1151. The tests have nothing do do with anything we do in class. I have not missed a single class and I am struggling. Never again will I be in his class!!!!!
Dr. Collins is a good prof. His class is easy as a chem class goes. His tests are based pretty much 90% off of his slides, which are quite thorough, I've even printed off some slides to give to my friends who were having trouble in their chem classes. Dr. Collins even over explains at times which helps when u get 2 the harder parts of chemistry.
Pretty good professor, will help you if you ask him, uses an iClicker system so attendance helps out your grade.
Dr. Collins is very helpful. Got a B in lab and all i really did was show up. He will explain everything clearly and help you the best he can. I'd take him again.
He's a good professor. He's soft spoken and uses an iclicker so attendance is required. I never used the book and got an A. There are 5 tests and 1 final exam. All tests are from the slides and the online homework. They're pretty straight forward. He is very helpful when something is hard to understand. Trust me! I hate Chemistry with a passion!
Horrible. His teaching is horrible. I took this class over the summer and was not satisfied with my grade so I decided to retake it. Still got the same grade even though I knew all of the material. His accent is totally frustrating and he doesn't understand if you have problems with web assign, which by the way is horrible.
I wish he would have tried to keep up with what we were doing in lab more. I would do something in lab, and then finally learn what I was doing two weeks in lecture. EXTREMELY frustrating. I did well the first half of the semester, but the last two tests were horrid! The final was surprisingly easy though. It's not made by him though.
Very helpful. Great office hours. He loves to help his students, and want them to succeed. I would recommend him to incoming freshman. I love the iclicker particaption. It is a great thing and helped my grade last semester.
He is a good teacher. Go to class and study and you should do fine.
This is an iClicker class, but the bonus is that your participation will bring the average up if you go to class. Do well on the final: it brought me from a C to a B.
He is very good. With homework, just ask him how to do the problems and he'll do them right there in class. He is very helpful and nice.
collins knows the material but sometimes doesnt get it across that well. I wouldnt take him for 1160. Every other teacher drops a test and some replace ur lowest with ur final exam too if it is higher than ur lowest test
Had him for I and II. Try to get to know him. He is very kind but his class is HARD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (most Chem. professors are on probabtion b/c scores are SO low) He will try to help you out. Go to class for Clicker questions and do webasign (this will help you) test are hard as heck!!!!!! Try to take at another school!!!!
not your easiest teacher, but gets the information across. If you don't like iclicker questions than start liking them because he does a bunch. But they really help your grade as long as you answer. Overall cool guy. One of my fav profs at ECU. Work hard and you will do great in his class.Curves at the end
Collins is definitely a lab kind of guy. He is very helpful and always willing to answer any questions you have no matter how simple they are. Most people comment on Collins in the lecture, he's too shy and a lab geek to do well in that environment. I hated him in chem 1120 but in chem 1161 he was fantastic! You should sign up for his labs.
Collins is an ok professor. You can tell that he knows the material really well but he doesn't necessarily know how to go about teaching it to his classes. he will work problems out for you on the board but he doesn't emphasize what the problem is for, only how to do it.
General Chemistry is tough. Dr. Collins, is one of my favorites. Don't take him if you are not a serious student... well don't take GEN CHEM if you are not a serious student. Bottom line is that he will help you through the course. He is somewhat unaproachable, but don't be afraid to ask questions.
I liked Dr. Collins. He was always available and willing to help with any questions. He was a nice person who really took an interest in the students learning.
Good lab teacher. I dont know about his Chem lectures but the labs were good. Be prepared. There is always a quiz die the day before lab
Dr. Collins is a very good professor. If you show that you are making an effort to learn the course material and come to him with questions, he will help you out! He helped me work several of the webassign problems and helped explain confusing concepts to me. He may seem stand-offish at times, but it is more than helping to help anyone!Made a B!
All of those previous ratings are lies. Dr Collins is a great professor. They're just mad because chem is hard. I got an A. The trick is to go to pirate tutoring for the homework and him for extra help. He curves all of his tests and even fudges the grades a bit at the end. Yea he uses i-clickers alot but he works them with the class step by step.
Very Nice teacher. I don't understand all of the negativity around him. Always available in his office for help and answers any question you have. Great guy, and I felt he got the information across pretty clearly. Would take again.
He is an awesome professor! I have taken him for several of my chemistry classes and he was a big help every time. If you go to class and show him that you care about your grade he will help you get the best grade you can! Take him!
Nice guy but if you are not really good at chemistry, like me, the class will be very difficult and the tests hard. If you need help Collins is there but i found the way he taught class not very clear.
He was very scatter brained during class. Our class had to basically correct the slides for him. He is a nice guy, but when it comes to a subject like chem, he needs to be more organized and his tests need to be like the examples in class.
Great teacher and was very helpful. The tests are on the material so you have to study, they are not word for word on the practice tests. Has great office hours and is always there if you have questions. One of the best chemistry teachers I have had.
Dr. Collins is a really good teacher, in class he helps as much as he can. He pretty much works out all the clicker questions for you. Chemistry is a difficult subject but as long as you study and ask questions when your confused, you should do fine.
I thought he was very helpful and would show you how to do things if you asked. Just dont ever forget your lab coat, goggles, or gloves or you'll have to run all the way back to your dorm and back cause there arent any extras. it happend to me... twice ha
I wasn't too impressed with him. I got Bs on most of his tests and I worked my ass off for those Bs. I tried picking up my previous tests on multiple occasions but he was never in his office when he was supposed to have office hours so I never got it. The clickers are for attendance, I attended every class. But I wouldn't recommend him.
Nice guy, study guides will help out on the tests. Show interest and he can boost your grade up if need be. Don't forget the clicker for daily questions.
Will explain concepts to you but does not teach consistently with his tests, he will teach you one way to work a problem and test you on a different approach to it. Nice professor just seems like the tests are too different from the lectures.
Dr. Collins is a great professor. He wants everyone to do well and is willing to help as much as he can. The class is not easy at all. you do have to go and pay attention, but if you go to his office hours after class and show him you want an A, then you will get one.I would take him again without a doubt.
Dr. Collins isnt bad if you take 1150 you have to go to class and study!!! He does clicker questions and the hw is on mastering chemistry. Just a warning the Final for this class is insanely hard!
Mr. Collins is a really helpful teacher he is available to meet with you whenever you can and he will walk you step by step through the homework, notes, or test. The practice tests he has online are super helpful and I suggest going to class to get the clicker points. The final is super hard
Attendance isn't mandatory, but there are 9-25 clicker points every class, so pretty much if you miss a few classes, you're screwed. The exams are nothing like what you learn in class, and the final is impossible. He doesn't curve or offer extra credit or grade replacements like other teachers. Pretty much, if you understand chemistry, take him.
Very nice guy, but very hard material. I made a 102 in chemistry in high school, and finished this class with a C+. Don't buy the book, I never used it. I would recommend him, but pay attention in class. He tends to talk in circles, but he knows his material. I have him again for 1160 next semester.
Collins is a great professor and loves chemistry! I did well in chemistry in high school, so everything we learned in his class was basically review. The tests actually aren't bad if you understand the homework. Go to class to get your clicker points! I'm excited to have him next semester
Mr. Collins is a great teacher. He keeps your attention most of class and explains subjects well. His test are super easy as long as you do the practice test. I never used the textbook so I would definitely recommend not buying it.
Dr Collins is very helpul as long as he can tell you are putting effort in. I would not recommend buying the book unless you plan to read it o your own. Attendance is not mandatory, but go to class and do your homework. Gives practice tests that are helpul. I went to PTC, which helped alot and finished with a C. Although I didn't do great, hes good
Dr.Collins is a great professor and is very helpful. The class is a bit difficult so you need to pay attention. He curves his exams so its not that hard to pass the course.
This professor is one of top 3 favorites at ECU. He is extremely helpful if you ask for it and show him that you really want to learn the material. His tests are hard but if you understand the Mastering Chemistry homework (as awful as it is) you will get an A. Overall I would recommend to anyone who is willing put forth an effort to learn! :)
I highly recommend Dr. Collins. He is very helpful and wants to do everything he can to make sure you know the material. Unlike the professors in many big lecture classes he actually tries to get to know you. Chemistry is tough but he does his best to make it easier. Use the practice tests to study, they help A LOT!
Dr. Collins is fantastic! He genuinely cares about students and helps them understand things. The practice exams are extremely helpful. Chemistry is very hard, but with the required effort it is possible to get an A :)
He is a great person! Write down everything! Appreciate that he took time to make up his own work problem and write them on the board, they help you understand is tests. You have to get past his voice, pay attention, it'll be hard but do it. Also read before you go to class, that'll help too.
He can describe something very simple and make it out to be something that was picked from a dream of Stephen Hawking. Very monotone, pretty sure he never turned on his microphone. He is a nice guy, but I wasn't impressed with his teaching.
hard. very. very. hard. do not walk into this class thinking you did well in high school chem so this should be a breeze. teacher really wants to help, but the way he presents the material can be very confusing. Attendance is mandatory, missing as much as 3 classes can be detrimental. tests based off study guide. final is impossible and state made.
Don't bother wasting your time.... Studying for exams does you no good!! You're still gonna fail! He is BY FAR the worst professor I've had here at ECU! If you care about your GPA at all, you will stay as far away from him as you can. PS. Not to mention I just took an exam the day before the final ACS Exam... Cool Collins, REAL COOL.....
GREAT PROFESSOR! he is very knowledgeable and will put all his effort to help his students. Do the practice tests because they are almost identical to the exam! dont listen to whoever says he is hard, or what so ever because, I passed with an A by only going to class, doing my homework and reviewing for the test whatever he covers in class.
Dr. Collins is a GREAT professor. I am shocked that his rating is not all that. He is VERY clear about everything and makes everything easy and understandable. I am not a native english speaker and i never had an issue understanding anything he says. Do the practice exams because they are almost identical to his exams. TAKE HIM WITH NO DOUBT.
He is a great professor. Study the study guides because they are very similar t o his exams. Chemistry is not an easy course so understand that before blaming the teacher. You can understand this guy. If you pay attention and go to office hours you should do fine. Anyone that says otherwise is an idiot and probably didnt do the work.
I am considered top 10 student at ecu. With a a gpa above 3.5. Here is my advice dont take him he sucks. I have gotten all a's but in this class. I GOT A BETTER GRADE IN ORGANIC
He is one of the worst teachers i have ever had. doesn't explain things in a easy way and is very not willing to help you pass his class don't take his class
Horrible teacher and very difficult. Has homework before he goes over it. Very tough and do not recommend to anyone!
IF YOU VALUE YOUR GPA PLEASE DO NOT TAKE HIM. HE DOESN'T DROP ANY TEST AND HIS TEST AREN'T ANYTHING LIKE HIS PRACTICE EXAMS. I'M RETAKING THIS CLASS BECAUSE OF HIM.
Just don't take him, he is not there for his students and he will NOT work with you if you have any personal issues that make you miss class. AND his Exams are nothing like the practice exams, I'm pretty sure a majority of the class has already failed his first 2 exams which he only gives a third and the ACS Exam
sit near the front, soft spoken
This professor is TERRIBLE. He gives you homework before he talks about how to work through the problems in class. The exams in his class are nearly impossible. Lastly, he flies through the material because he doesn't take time to explain how to work through problems. If you can't teach yourself definitely don't take him.
Horrible professor! the man can NOT teach to save his life. very bad at explaining things, not good at answering questions. If you need this class for nursing school and you want to get in do yourself a favor and DO NOT take his class.
Dr. Collins is the worst professor I've ever had. The tests are nearly impossible, that is after he takes up time to make sure everyone is sitting in the front. He doesn't offer extra credit and he doesn't do any type of grade replacement. Be ready to memorize all of the equations too. I will never take him again, and I do not recommend taking him.
Normally I do not go by what other students say about teachers but, HE IS ONE OF THE WORST TEACHERS I HAVE EVER HAD IN MY ENTIRE LIFE. He doesn't pay attention to whether or not you understand and the practice exams are nothing like the exam. Its like he does not care. You could be there everyday and not pass WARNING THIS CLASS WILL RUIN YOUR GPA
At first he was very nice whenever i went to his office hours, but once the semester went on he was never any help. the tests are very hard and he doesn't give extra credit. He also has homework due every class and you can not miss class or your grade will drop
He's very quiet, so in order to hear him you have to move to the front of the room, he really tries to help out but sometimes he can be a bit confusing. My issue with this class was that he walked us through how to do every problem for every clicker question, but then the tests were super hard so babying us in lecture didnt help.
Just, if you would like to retake this course, take him. He is a ridiculous professor and honestly was not there for his students when they needed him. Especially if you miss a class, and he only gave 3 exams which if you did poorly on one of them, you're screwed. Pick another professor, save your time and money
Dr. Collins is a good instructor. If you do not understand the course material he will help you if you just ask him. The tests are somewhat like the study guides but it helps to look back in the book. He takes attendance by the clicker and he goes over the questions. There are tutors for this class and they are very helpful! It is possible to pass!
I loved Dr. Collins! If you need to ask for help hes always willing during his office hours. During class he's open to questions and usually explains it better for you. I never used the textbook for this class. Your final grade is from tests, which are four, and clicker questions that are done in class so make sure you go! I recommend him to anyone
Dr. Collins is really smart but cannot teach and makes exams impossible. I am really good at chemistry and got a 96 on the state final exam, but still ended up getting a D in his class. This is a little perspective of how difficult his exams are. The homework due every class was also hard and it never really matched up with the lecture. Don't take!
WORST professor. Does not care about his students. I had severe morning sickness during the last exam and he would not let me leave to throw up in the bathroom. When I went to him with a question he acted annoyed. Generally an A++ in chem- got a C+ in his class. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
He teaches by the book and the class is pretty easy as long as you stay on top of the work every week. His online assignments are due every class which is annoying, but they aren't very challenging. My only complaint was the volume at which he spoke.
Dr. Collins is easily one of the best professors I have ever had. Everyone is right, he does speak super quiet so SIT IN THE FRONT, don't miss class, UNDERSTAND the practice exams because the exams are VERY similar. The Mastering Chem homework is tedious but that comes with any class. I made a 100 on the first two tests 97 in the course.. TAKE.
This is a chemistry class therefore it's not easy. Collins teaches this material as if you already know the basics so if you're feeling confused let him know and he will help. Attendance is mandatory through clicker questions. Lots of online homework but is helpful when it comes to exams. Tutoring helps a lot!
Hes a good professor, very clear and helpful when explaining things.
He definitely teaches as though you have a basic understanding of chemistry... but seeing as how this was an introductory course not many people did. His teaching style is confusing for this reason. Thankfully i had previous knowledge and was taught by a good professor bc that was the only thing that got me through :( HW due EVERY class
I had a final exam that was on the same day at the same time as his and he told me I was wrong and that there was no way that was possible so I had to make arrangements with my math teacher. And, every time someone would leave he would get really mean and harsh and punish the ones that stayed.
Dr. Collins is a great professor! He helped me understand Chemistry better than most of the professors at ECU. Chemistry isn't my strongest subject, but I had to take it bc it was required for my major. He taught it at a level where even I could understand it. He goes over the homework in class and gives examples of equationsreactions too.
hated his teaching style..... is NOT good at explaining the basics. would teach something then give you a clicker q which counts toward 12% of your grade BEFORE doing examples and offering very little help when asked about them. so annoying and frustrating. his answers to my q's were never what i was asking for and didn't help at all. DONT TAKE
Very unclear when explaining material. The only reason I passed his class with a good grade is because I would attend the tutoring workshops.
i just dont think he should teach lower level classes. he cant break it down the way you need in your first college level chem class. i think that for higher levels he would be fine but in 1120 it was horrible
clicker points in class are a big part, they will make or break you. he's kind of sassy too, funny when its not to you.
THIS IS THE TRUTH!!. I passed his class with an A and understood everything, though I was horrible at chemistry before his class. His homework is way easier then the other professors and the hints actually help. His test are EXACTLY like his practice test with only tiny differences (and easy if you study info on practice test!). TAKE HIM!!
You have to attend class, and make sure you always have your clicker. There is homework due every class. His homework and class problems are sort of tough, but his tests are easier. The test preps REALLY help. His tutors are awesome. 8am is early for chemistry, and hes strict about packing up early, but he is worth it.
Collins is one of the best professors I've had at ECU. Explains what you need to know and how you need to know it. Sit up front, he's quiet and draws on the board quite a bit. Bummed I couldn't take him for 1130. Made a high A in the class by going to class, doing the homework, and going in for test preps.
Collins is a pretty nice guy who wants his students to understand chemistry. The material can be somewhat challenging but he covers it well. He gives most answers to clicker questions and has study guides for the tests.
Doesn't go in depth about material. Can be extremely rude, doesn't talk clearly, attendance points everyday, very tedious online homework. For exam 3...I had asked to do it on a different date because my dad was getting out of surgery and I needed to be there, Dr Collins told me no and I could leave town after the test, no makeup test.
Talks quietly, so pick a seat in the front. Extremely bright man. Covers information well. Expect homework. If you skip class, there is no way you'll pass. The exam questions are reverse questions on study guide, so know material thoroughly. Even if you understand material, go to the tutoring center, it will heavily improve your grade.
The worst Chemistry teacher I have ever had. His tests are honestly really tough. DO NOT take him. If he is the only teacher, drop him if you can not drop him good luck
Chemistry 1160 is a hard class, but Collins is a good professor. Go to class, he gives credit for attendance using clickers, then extra points if you get the questions right. The test is hard, but he gives practice exams to study with that are basically the same.
Professor Collins was a great professor! He uses clickers and takes participation from all the points. Each question is a few points So its best to go to class because some days you could answer 2 questions and the next you could answer 10. Test aren't that bad he gives study guides with questions similar to the ones that will be on the test
Mr Collins is a great professor, he is quite soft-spoken though so sit in the front. His tests are pretty hard but then again, any chem 1160 class is hard. He will provide you all of the material you need to succeed in the tests, through homework and taking good notes in class. TAKE GOOD NOTES and add onto those notes with the Mastering chem stuff.
Very helpful professor and is always willing to help you if you go and see him. His powerpoint are elaborate and he always makes sure he does out equation and example problems for the entire class. You get points for coming to class. His "practice exams" are identical to the actual exams. Use them!! You'll do fine.
Dr. Collins has to be the most awkward professor I've ever had. But he's still a good teacher. His practice tests are the same as his actual tests except the concepts are reversed, he does curve his tests but unfortunately does not drop the lowest test grade, which kept me from possibly getting an A. Go to the pirate tutoring center!!!
Go to class!! Clicker questions are key and he works through them to the last step! super easy. Tests are exactly like the practice tests, with different numbers. made chemistry a lot easier to understand, at least for me!! he's very nice but speaks softly so sit in the front
The class is difficult, he is little help at all. If you skip class, you will never pass. He does little to explain concepts.
worst professor I've ever had
I thought he was a great professor. Very smart and know his stuff. However speaks very softly so you might want to sit upfront. He's always willing to to help you. Expect to have class participation points every time you go to class. I would take him again.
The test are tough, but as long as you studied the practice exam, then you'll do fine. P.S. The practice exam is EXACTLY like the actual exam , but different numbers. He has office hours and since he made the exam , he is very helpful and will tell you what to study. He curves the all he tests a little , because I know people who got 108%. not me
Clicker quizzes are given every class period, and sometimes at the very end of the class a question will be asked, so you have to stay the whole time. Homework is given regularly, but it's not too terribly difficult. His tests aren't too complex, but you should definitely do some practice problems beforehand. He's does offer help, though.
You can tell he loves the material but with a huge class it is very hard to get engaged and stay awake. I would encourage you to do as well as possible on the homework and don't miss any assignments. I would also say to go to class every day! There are in class clicker questions and you get points for just answering the question. These can save you
He's not very good at explaining his lectures also goes a little to fast.
Very very quiet guy, so sit in the front. Lectures taught me absolutely nothing, so I went to PSAC to learn everything. Not hard material at all though, and the practice tests he gives are identical to the real tests. Clicker questions every class so make sure you go! Live and die by the practice tests, they're the test from previous semesters.
the one good thing about collins, is that he curves the tests 5-10 points depending. he makes the practice exams identical to the actual exam. however, he isnt easy to understand and doesnt explain things well. if you're good at chemistry you'll do just fine, if not i would recommend getting another professor. **dont buy the textbook, NOT HELPFUL**
His lectures are only 50 minutes but they seem to take 2 hours. He is VERY hard to hear and refuses to turn up his mic. He is willing to help if you go to his office hours. Attendance is mandatory due to clicker quizzes daily. A lot of homework and the tests are hard and sometimes include chapters that were not discussed.
He goes out of his way to make sure you understand the material clearly. His tests are similar to his practice material, do you know what to study. It's not an easy class, but he'll do whatever it takes to help you pass and understand the material.
This was the class that established my good work ethic. He will give you everything you need to succeed, but with that being said it's a lot of stuff to do. Study the mastering chem, take good book notes, study lec. notes, and study the practice tests (do time trials) you'll be good. Collins was a great teacher you just gotta work hard.
Chem 1160 is more math intensive than Chem 1150 especially if you have Dr. Collins. However, he will completely work out math problems and explain what to do very well and very clearly. Tests are similar to the study guides and you have clicker questions every day. He can be a little hard to understand sometimes, but overall he is a great professor
I'm pretty bad at Chem & was scared about taking it but Collins is a pretty good chem prof. He goes over things and will take the time to answer questions if you don't understand, he is soft-spoken and can be a little awkward but its easy to look past. His study guides are practice exams and are literally IDENTICAL to the tests, would recommend
Collins is a great teacher. If you do the practice test you are guaranteed a good grade. He gives you all the information you need to succeed.
Very nice guy, knows what he is teaching. If you don't understand stuff he will go over it with you and you can visit his office hours for extra help. If you stay on top of things, you can receive an A in this class. The practice exams are very helpful, only difference than the real test is the numbers. Same type questions.
He is passionate about chemistry. The material is very boring, and he's very soft spoken, which doesn't help. Clicker questions every day (1 point for answering, 3 for correct answers); given at random times so you must attend & stay the whole class period *Textbook unhelpful, don't buy* LOTS of online chemistry work. Be prepared to teach yourself!
He is so rude and disrespectful when you try to go to him for help. Terrible grader. Doesn't explain anything clearly. Doesn't seem like he knows what hes talking.
The first exam was by far the easiest. Make sure you go to the test review sessions!! The tests are the same as the practice tests he puts on blackboard just with dif numbers or elements. He does clicker points and if you get it right you get 3 points/ question if not you only get 1. Lots of mastering chemistry hw, DONT BUY THE TEXTBOOK
If you don't have a clicker, and if you don't go to class... You WILL do horrible in this class. I went to every single class meeting and I know for a fact that I was confused... I would hate to see someone who never went to class.
This class is way harder than it needs to be. If someone has a question, he doesnt answer it and just says see me after class. Its really hard to hear him and the homework is ridiculous. Dont take this class unless youre really really REALLY good at chem already. Anything he tries to explain just makes it more confusing.
Dr. Collins is a great teacher and really tries his best to help you succeed. Go to class because he does clicker questions every day which is part of your grade. Exams are semi difficult but he gives you a practice exams that is IDENTICAL to the real exam! Study and do the practice exams and you will pass the course!
Collins has a lot of homework assignments, but the assignments help you understand the material better. I was overwhelmed from all of the assignments at first, but I think without them I wouldn't have understood the material enough to ace the exams. Easy exams if you stay on top of the homework! Always available during office hours, very nice!
He. Does. Not. Teach. In the class he simply reviews material as though the students should already know it. When he works through problems he doesnt show or say why he does what he does. He just does it. Many people have found that a better grade can be achieved by not even going to his lecture and just going to tutoring. He is also very quiet.
Dr. Collins lectures are a little boring and sometimes hard to follow, but if you go to tutoring and go to class so that you can get the clicker questions right you will do fine. He gives practice exams and they are just like the actual test. do the practice test and you will do good in his class. he is super smart and is a really nice teacher.
Really nice guy who is willing to help, but way too smart and doesn't know how to dumb it down for people who dont know chem. Hardest class I've taken at ecu. Clicker questions every lecture that are impossible bc you can't understand the lecture. Practice tests help a LOT, but I still never made over a 75 on any exam. Homework every night.
Literally the hardest class I have ever taken and he is honestly no help and does not know how to slow down and help his students at all. He was the worst Professor that I have ever had.
Taking CHEM 1150 with Collins is honestly not as bad as others seem to make it. There are 3 things to do to succeed in this class. 1. Go to class- attendance through clicker questions 2. Webassign- Use this to your advantage, run through problems over and over 3. Resources- use the practice exams and understand each and every problem
If you hate teaching yourself a whole course-worth of chemistry, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Collins is unapproachable, very rude, and does not teach. He goes through the slides and expects you to know how to do everything without any help. Plus, he assigns a ton of homework and even goes on to the next chapter before having the upcoming test.
He isn't a bad professor at all considering how hard chemistry is. Homework helped me understand the material. Practice exams cover the same material as the actual exams. Clicker questions every class, but he works them out for you. Definitely have to review all the material yourself, but his lectures do help. Didn't respond to a few emails.
Dr. Collins is a decent professor! He's extremely smart, so it's hard for him to "dumb it down" to teach us, but he really tries. He's VERY sweet and soft spoken. Don't buy the text book. GOING TO CLASS MATTERS BECAUSE IT GIVES YOU PARTICIPATION POINTS THAT REALLY COUNT. Go to the weekly workshops/class and you should do fine.
He expresses clear expectations and is very helpful during office hours or via email. I read, went to workshops and tutoring, did practice homework and used the dynamic study area on Mastering. He explains things very well and I'm sad I can't take him for 1130. Credit per clicker questions, HW and test grades. It was my fav class. Finals cumulative
Dr. Collins is extremely kind and truly cares about his students' success. If you don't understand something, go to his office hours. For those who gave him a bad rating, it was probably because they did not put in the effort to succeed. This class is tough and you will have to work for it, but it is a weed-out course for some majors.
Dr. Collins is such a great professor! Obviously Chem isn't an easy class, for anyone, so it is gonna be hard no matter who the professor is. But he is so nice and he really tries to help you understand what he's teaching! I definitely recommend him!!
Dr. Collins was amazing! Always available during office hours for questions, plenty of homework practice to prepare you for exams, and class participation grades to better your grade! (If you plan on attending class) he is the best chemistry professor ever!
Overall explains concepts well. Not the most exciting person but who is at 8am. Very clear grading criteria. Homework helps with understanding the concepts. Practice test are very similar to real ones!
The class itself is hard not him as a teacher. He gives you clicker questions and extra credit for going to class everyday. The homework is a great grade booster and the practice tests are exactly the same as the actual tests. His lectures can be followed if you actually pay attention. Hard but not impossible if you STUDY A LOT like 8 hours a test!
So much online homework that is different from what we were taught in class. Even though he uses a microphone, its so hard to hear him. Everyone I know who said that failed chem said that they had him as a prof. I asked a simple question over email and he wouldnt tell me and said if I wanted to know the answer, I had to go to his office.
LOVED HIM. He is really nice and willing to work with you. Learned a lot from his class, you just have to put in the work.
Really nice guy but not a good teacher. The examples in lecture are much easier than the homework which would take me hours and multiple tries to get it right. Tests are hard too, not enough time to do all the work.
Dr. Collins is a nice guy. He is obviously very smart and loves his subject, however, he struggles to make it understandable for those in the class that are not chem majors. The practice exams did not help.
Dr. Collins is reachable outside of class-- but not much help. Chem is definitely a class that lies within your own ability self-teach. Tutoring also helps a bunch. His exams are multiple choice, which can be helpful but there is no partial credit which hurts a lot. He is willing to work with you if you miss an assignment.
Doctor Collins is a great choice for a chem professor. He literally gives you the test from last year to study and most of the time its petty much the same other than one or two questions. He does give a good amount of home work but it's really not that bad. This class made me change from a bio major to a chem major!
if you study/do your work, this should not be too difficult. the practice exams are almost identical to the actual exams, very clear expectations. there is not much actual homework assigned. he simplifies and breaks everything down. pay attention, do your work.
Dr. Collins is so nice and accommodating. His test are extremely hard but he gives you previous tests to study. Hell just ask you similar questions but from a different perspective. Dont take this class if you arent willing to STUDY. I also took it in a 5 week course which was difficult. No extra credit but does curve tests by about 7 points.
If you don't just get Chemistry right off the bat then this class will be very hard for you because he is not very good at explaining things. He explains the concepts in class just as they would be explained in a book (worded difficult and very long definitions). Also if you can't pay attention to a monotoned voice this professor is not for you.
He is really tough and does not give you time to understand. The class is not as hard he males it harder. P.S if you are taking his class make sure you learn the equations!!
Dr. Collins is one of the nicest people I've met. He is a great teacher but sometimes he doesn't explain things well. We have HW and clicker questions (which count towards attendance and sometimes extra credit). His tests are similar to the review exams he has posted on BB. Just study, do your homework, GO TO CLASS and everything should be okay.
This class is very difficult, time consuming, and his teaching style is very fast paced and confusing.
This class is not am easy class but the study guides to the tests are very helpful! He gives homework almost everyday and sometimes it is graded on accuracy and sometimes it is not. You need to be in class everyday for participation points and if you are not there it will hurt your grade.
Mr. Collins is a great guy. He is very intelligible about the material however it is very hard to follow because he doesn't explain things well (GO TO THE TUTORING CENTER if you have him). Taking notes in class and doing the practice tests help you study for the exam, but this is a very difficult class. Be prepared to listen and show up every day.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS
do not take him very confusing and hard to follow along with. I have to pull multiple all nighters before exams to pass.
Dr. Collins has amazing powerpoints during lectures in class but he talks SO fast you have no time to write everything you need down. If you have questions during class, he tells you to ask after but if his next class starts coming in he won't give you a full answer. If you don't have a chemistry background and need the course DO NOT TAKE HIM.
Chemistry is not an easy subject, however, he did not make it any easier. I found myself having to teach myself outside of class because nothing he ever said made sense. He is extremely rude most days and constantly told us how incompetent we were compared to the rest of his class. I would never take this professor again. Your grade will suffer.
I would not take his class again. I understood the first section and did okay on the first exam, but after that I was done. I did not understand anything and when I went to him for help he told me to "go figure it out." Yes chemistry is a hard subject but It should not be to where the class average is a 50.
Dr. Collins is a nice guy, but his class is ridiculously hard. He knows the material like the back of his hand and doesn't understand that we have no clue what he's talking about. This class has caused several mental breakdowns.
He knows the material but is awful at teaching it. He often makes us feel bad for not knowing how to do chemistry and/ or asking for help by telling us to "figure it out". He will call on random people in class and ask them to answer a question and when they don't know the answer he says you need to pay attention when he's just a bad teacher tbh
Attendance isn't mandatory but you get attendance points if you go which helps a lot. He's not great, but he's not the best. Tests are difficult and I often had to go back through his slides after class.
Collins' was an excellent professor in my opinion. If you take the time to do all the homework and to study, you will pass. I made A's on all the exams from doing that. He will give you the tests from the semester before to use as a study guide. Also, he will give you up to 10 points added back on some of your exams if you do the extra credit.
Go to class (it helps your grade), ACTUALLY go to the PASC tutoring sessions (they have videos online), he threw curves on exams, best grading scale ever, rounded people's final grade to pass, homework is fairly easy, M.C. test questions, takes late homework (late deduction), study guides for all tests. Just pay attention and you should be fine.
I don't want people telling you that Collins class was impossible because it wasn't. Chemistry is hard for anyone who takes it. I went to PASC tutoring sessions and it helped a lot. I could sometimes understand them better than him. Going to class pays off. No worries, I was clueless the entire semester. He does a grade replacement on the final !
Dr. Collins was a great professor. He was always willing to help if you went to his office hours! Clicker questions helped your grade A LOT! He even curved the tests when the class average was low. Make sure you go to class and study! Going to the PASC also helps.
Not a lot of time for him to teach and go in depth. A lot of homework and quizzes, tests are hard and few of them. Attendance is mandatory and taken by an app.
Hes a great professor! Go to class and listen. In class he taught the material for the exams and the homework was practice for it. Study guides where the same questions as the exams the concepts were usually the opposite. If you learn the concepts not the example problems you can get an A. He teach everything on the exams. Dont buy the book!
helpful SOMETIMES.
Dr. Collins is a nice person. Teaching wise, I'm sorry to say this, but he's awful at it. He knows the material, but there are times where I am so lost. Honestly, I had to self-teach myself some of the material. GO TO TUTORING (PASC)! I went to the workshops and it honestly helped me so much. If you need this for credit, DO NOT TAKE HIM!
Chemistry can already be difficult but monotone lectures and no curves or extra credit didn't help. He is very knowledgeable but he can over complicate simple ideas. I spent the entire semester explaining topics to the people around me. His tests are full of trick questions even though he gives you a practice test.
I had Professor Collins for a summer course, and I found him to be very knowledgeable on the course topics! He explains everything very well and even though there were no practice tests, his were not that difficult. Orgo is a hard class but I found his teaching style to be very effective!
Dr. Collins is not the best when it comes to explaining chemistry, but I did not find his class difficult simply because he gives practices tests that are exactly like the actual test and also curves the tests heavily to compensate. He gets upset and makes comments if you come in late or leave early so beware.
If you have the opportunity, pick another chem teacher. From my experience, Collins is pretty rude. I've emailed him once and he didn't get back to me for a week and when he did he simply said that I needed to stop bombarding his email. He's not a bad teacher, he knows what he is talking about, but he doesn' seem to care to much about his students
Dr. Collins went out of his way to make the transfer to online classes hard. Each exam was 2 hours, 30 questions. Sounds pretty fair right? Until you realize each question has letter choices A-G, and some A-L, which both are not even possible in person with a scantron. Class average would be in the 40s and he would curve 4 points. Dont take!
Doesn't explain things very thoroughly, acts like we know the material because he knows it like the back of his hand. Lectures are very hard to follow and about 3 pop quizzes per week. Thinks this is the only class we have and is VERY strict on due dates. Some of the material makes me want to rip my hair out, LISTEN to the PASC extra help videos!!
Dr. Collins acts like he is the only class any of his students have. On top of several hours of lectures and videos, the amount of work assigned is almost unbearable. He gives little feedback and is extremely strict with assignments/grades. He will not bend for you. No exceptions. The best thing you can do for yourself is to attend PASC meetings.
He acts like we already know all the information so having him online isn't the best because he just reads over the notes on slideshows and tells us to do book work. He has practice exams but rarely have similar questions to exam. Doesn't give extra credit for anything. He is very kind though so if you have questions he will help to best of ability
Dr. Collins is a pretty good lecturer. Most of the course was online this semester which meant a lot of homework, but the homework helped me learn the material. He replaces your worst exam grade with the final grade which boosted my grade a whole letter. You should definitely watch his lectures or go to class to ensure you are learning the material
Dr. Collins was a very nice professor who clearly knows a lot about chemistry. However, the video lectures often had no correlation with the tests, quizzes, and Pearson homework. I never read a page of the textbook and stopped watching the lectures in favor of PASC videos, as his lectures did nothing to improve my understanding.
He really wasn't a bad teacher. It was online b/c of COVID. The only reason I did bad is because I SUCK at chemistry, but his lectures seriously were good and just take notes and STUDY! There is kinda a lot of HW but it's online and pretty much can do it until you get it right. He does know what he's talking about!!! He will help you if you ask!!!!
Dr. Collins is unwilling to help a student when they need something specifically done. He also is a pretty harsh grader, you can't make any mistake without him taking off several points for it. It is pretty unreasonable considering our class was almost all group-based, and we cannot control everyone.
Tests are very math based and not conceptual. No one in my class had enough time for the test. We begged him for even an extra 30 minutes but he showed no sympathy and said that us failing his tests were our own fault. I understand that to a certain extent but he needs to understand we have other courses. I dont recommend him as a professor.
The absolute worst to take this course. Organic chemistry is hard, we all know it. He told us on day 1 of summer classes that the class moves too fast so he will not help us one on one. His lectures were pre recorded and very short. You will understand it during lectures and homework but the exam is another level of difficult. Terrible. Good luck!
There was no practice tests, no extra credit. I struggled to get my grade up after one test. He's class time was a hit or miss. Didn't answer's questions to the fullest and often gave students a "I don't know". Didn't know how to work smartworks. We never could see the correct answers for our tests. Didn't understand that we had other classes too.
Dr. Collins is a good professor, he had lecture videos posted, did a weekly recitation, and had practice exams & all of the chapter slides avaliable to you. He allows you to drop your lowest exam and he offers up to 20 points back on exams. I think his class was very organized, but chemistry is tough! You defintley have to put work in! Yes homework
His classes were hit or miss, never clearly answered questions and when he would he would tell you to read the textbook which only answered part of the question. He did not give study guides or test review, and the homework did not help with the tests either. Sign up for tutoring as much as you can it helps a little.
worst prof ever!!!! eve4n if you show up to class and do all the homework, you are likley to fail!
There are a lot of assignments due and he can be very unclear sometimes. He can also be quite rude when trying to discuss things with him. Would not reccomend taking him
Professor Collins is a great professor - his lectures are very structured. He provides examples of problems in class that help significantly with the online homework. Tests are majority of your grade.
I personally didn't like his teaching style. If you don't pass the exams then you won't pass the class. The WebAssign assignments were confusing and didn't really tie in with what he taught. He does care about your success and will help if you reach out. But if you're not as strong in chemistry then I wouldn't recommend him.
this chem lab for me was so much easier than chem lab 1. I'm not sure if it was for Dr. Collins or for the TA Montana Kelley. Dr. Collins is a strict grader but Montana graded our lab reports and was VERY helpful in the lab and in lab activities. If you have questions about something ASK! Collins is willing to help if you put in the effort.
Dr. Collins is a kind and soft-spoken older man. You need to come to class everyday if you want to get participation points and do the homework because this can earn you extra credit in the class. He provides recordings of his lectures and walkthroughs of practice exams. Dr. Collins' class is not hard, but you need to utilize everything provided.
He doesn't use chem 101 he uses Webassign which is way easier he doesn't overwhelm you with homework or concepts. He gives plenty of resources. If you sit in the front of class and engage and see him in office hours, email him. He is very helpful even if you're not doing to well, he will work with you.
If you want to do well in his class, sit up front and engage in class. He uses doesn't overwhelm you with concepts or homework. I provide lots of resources like videos, and easy notes. I recommend going to office hours as much as possible and emailing him questions he will work with you! He wants his students to succeed.
I had to withdraw form this class due to personal reasons, but he provides "practice exams" that are almost the same as the exams. He also is open to any questions, super sweet, and responds quickly. He drops the lowest test grade.
Smart and knowledgeable at chemistry, terrible at teaching it. Exams are different from what I learned in class and the practice exams are completely different. Only exam and homework grade. Harshly grades both. I regret choosing this professor for chem 1160.
He's not as bad as people say but you do need to pay attention in class, he moves fast sometimes. Clicker questions are "attendance" and count as 5% of your grade. Exams are just like the practice ones on Canvas and he does exam recovery quizzes for extra pts. Four exams but drops lowest, 60% of grade. HW is on Cengage, 2-3 a week but they're easy.
He's really not as bad as everyone says he is. There are 3 hourly exams which are just like the practice exams and one final exam. He drops one of the hourly exams. He says to read the textbook but I'd only read it if that's how you learn. Chem is a hard class anyways but I think as long as you do the work and listen to him you'll do fine.
I was extremely nervous to start chemistry. I am happy at the end of this term. Overall, Dr.Collins is tough but worth it. If you go in with the goal of learning, not because you have to but because you WANT to, then you will do well. He offers plenty of opportunities for additional help.
TAKE HIM! All of the tests are curved heavily, if you look over the study guides, you will do well on the tests.
This was a VERY lecture heavy class. Very uninteresting and all PowerPoints. While writing notes I would be 3 slides behind because he moved through the PowerPoints at 100 mph. When someone asked him to slow down he told them no. I had to withdraw from this class and now I have changed my major:)
Dr. Collins really does care for his students but if you don't come from the best schools and need extra help he's the one. He doesn't overwhelm you with hw if you meet with him in office hours he's helpful and sit in front row and participate he's willing to help you out. He'll say he can't do anything but secretly does or will give extra credit.
DO NOT TAKE FOR LAB! He will literally check off your work and tell you it "looks good" before you turn it in and will proceed to give you an F on the assignment. He gets flustered and overwhelmed so easily. If you get paired with lab partners that do not show up you are automatically put at a disadvantage. I would def not take again.
He's a great teacher who does everything he can to ensure his students pass. If you don't understand &reach out he is willing to help. He repeats things so many times & people still manage to miss it. Clicker questions are used for attendance. The homework is usually more difficult than the tests. If you listen & make an effort, you will be fine!
Dr. Collins is an amazing professor! Chem 1120 is extremely difficult, but if you do the readings, homework, attend class, &participate: you will pass. Do the practice exams & attend recitation meetings! Collins will help you if you come to him in person or email him. Very sweet guy.
I took chem 1120 with Collins this semester and loved it! The material can be confusing at times but he is great at explaining if you have questions. He also post a practice exam before each test that is almost identical to the exam so if you study the practice exam you will do fine on the tests. He also adds lots of extra credit onto the exams.
I would say if you are not good at chemistry do not take him! His classes consist of him just scrolling through PowerPoint. Be ready to take a lot of exams
Dr. Collins is a good professor. He posts all of his lectures online, and he also posts an agenda that shows which topics will be covered. He offers a lot of extra credit opportunities, and he is always available to help. His lectures can be a bit boring, but as long as you watch his videos and do your homework you should be fine.
Dr. Collins was great for inorganic lab. He was always there to answer questions either in lab or in his office hours. Very nice guy.
I would not recommend this professor. He is very accessible and easy to communicate with but the class is just awful. long lectures and very test heavy.
Dr. Collins did not make this chemistry lab easy for anyone involved. He is an incredibly harsh grader and can occasionally come across as abrasive. He made us stay the entire 3 hours and droned on for hours about topics that only needed 10 min explanations. I honestly think a group of kindergarteners could have taught this class better.
Tough grader. Does not explain topics well. Would not recommend for lab.
Dr. Collins lecture is LONG/BORING. He has a monotone voice hard to follow so do not take unless you are ready to teach yourself. We have a lot of homework that I find more helpful than his lectures BUT his practice exam is exactly the same as his exams with the numbers changed so that resource is helpful. Utilize his posted lectures and youre good
I took this class as a required credit but switched majors because of it. The professor talks quietly and rushes through slides. There's a lot of homework that doesn't align with the exams, and the practice tests don't reflect our class discussions. I wouldn't recommend this professor unless you already have a master's in Chemistry.
Just don't do it to yourself.
I would not recommend this unless you have a background in chemistry this course was extremely tough. Homework is way harder than class problems.
i signed up for my chem lab and there were no instructors assigned when i picked the class, i already knew material wise it would be difficult but this professor was something else, I had no issues with him but everyone complained about him and i understand why, he goes on and on and spends too long on PowerPoints, i worked my way to get my grade
Lectures are deathly boring but other than that good class no reason to not score well. Tons of opportunities to boost scores on exams. no need to buy the textbook just learn from the lectures, google, and ALEKS homework explanations. Professor knows what he's talking about and tries to make sure class is up to speed. polling everywhere attendance.
I had Dr. Collins from 9:30-10:45 and that was THE HARDEST thing ever energy wise. He is very monotone, super quiet voice (uses a small mic.), and then gets upset when we don't answer questions that we didn't even hear him ask....BUT I will say he curves all exams really well and ALEKS helps with your grade a lot. So bring some extra strong coffee!
Dr. Collins' class was very lecture heavy. I went to almost every class and really paid attention and found the class to be relatively okay and reading the textbook outside of class helped me a lot. If you are a good student, you will be fine.
He was super nice and offered plenty of office hours. He was super helpful when you attended his hours. Attendance/ participation is a grade.
Chem 1120 in itself is an awful class, but Collins did a great job teaching it. The homework actually prepares you for the tests and he gives you an alternate version of the test before each exam so you can use it to study. You study the exams and you'll be fine. He wants you to do well. ATTENDANCE MATTERS.
Made several students in the class cry because of his unprofessionalism by being rude. He is a very harsh grader and instructions for lab are confusing and not explained well. Does not excuse any absences and NEVER come late, he will not allow it.
Very difficult class on its own, but the professor wasn't exactly ideal. He's very intelligent and so often he's hard to understand. He got a 2 rating because he does offer extra credit, but the lectures are long and confusing and the content is hard. If you REALLY put yourself through hard work, you'll probably be fine. He also gets flustered easy
Professor Collins was very lecture-heavy. He also spoke very monotone, so it made it very hard to hear him. He would catch an attitude with students when they did not hear him or did not know the answer to questions. When studying for exams, he would provide practice exams that did not help whatsoever. I do not recommend him.
Be prepared to study!!! He will give practice tests that will have some content which is on the exam but then will put stuff which no one in the class has prepared for! Very generous with curves 3/4 out of the four exams had a 20 point curve but you had to redo questions you got wrong through a quiz to redeem the points. Somehow got a B+
You basically have to teach yourself chemistry. He talks extremely quietly, even with a microphone on. He goes over pointless chemistry "history" about each topic; but never takes the time to fully explain HOW to solve the equations, what each part of the equation means or stands for, and doesn't provide many examples of solving the equations.
Doesn't explain anything just expects you to understand and be ready for a test after one example.
Didn't teach correctly and super hard to understand. Expects you to know chem off the top of your head.
honestly had to teach myself and he talks so quiet even with a microphone. whenever he would show how to solve an example, his hand writing looks like scribbles, so you watching him solve is useless. he does curve exams and that's really the only good thing about him
If you want to keep your will to live, do not take this class with this professor. He has marble mouth, meaning you can't understand a word he's saying. And if you can, you won't be able to hear him, because he's speaking in a 2 dollar mic. take at your own risk. I changed my major because of this class. rip nursing
Dr Collins was a very good professor, I learned a lot. Attendance matters in order to succeed in this course. He is very helpful and offers a lot of extra credit to help boost your grade.
always answered questions but was a terrible professor. taught too fast and expected students to know things he never covered.didn't explain concepts well enough to help you succeed on tests. AI explains the material better than he did. His tests are very similar to the study guides, so study those. Also, go to his office hours—he's nice in person.
I thought I knew chemistry and I was wrong after this class. Tests were rough, but did test corrections which significantly helped my grade. Curved our final too. Never really knew anything going on in class. He spoke very monotone which made it so boring. Clicker questions in class for credit, def go to class for points. late hw was only 1% off/hr
