Man, what a hard class! But he was fair. I got the impression most of the students in community college these days are kind of lazy.
Makes unreachable work expectations for anyone who actually has even a minuit life outside of college. Doesn't consider other classes students may have when giving workload. Very unhelpful. Pompous. Well keep you working on mundane busy work, and it takes time away from quality of work you do in other classes
worst professor ever! unreasonable, 6 page tests front and back that no one in the class could complete. unless you are a natural chemist, i suggest any other professor.
confusing lectures, constantly talks about what we'll learn in higher chemistry- not all students are chem majors (aka no one cares),burns students out with unrealistic expectations for HW, tests, 15 formal lab reports... don't take this guy- you'll burn out by midterms.
He very pacient. explain material good. You can tell he love subject very much and is interested in you learning. He was always available to me for help in offic hours. I would take him again if I have the chance. It's a hard class. You have to make sure you don't fall behind. Very flexible with homework assignments.
He's the bomb! He really wants you to do good. If you do bad on an exam he will allow you to make it up or he will have the midterm replace that grade. So, if you do better on the midterm, then you do better on the test that you failed. Get F on fisrt test, but get B on midterm, then you automatically get B on first exam. (He's cute too!)
I don't know what everybody else is talking about. He doesn't explain things clearly and his tests are extremely hard! He does work with you to get your grade up, which is nice, but unless you enjoy boring lectures and hard ass tests don't take him.
Tests on items that are neither in the lecture nor in the text book. Finds the trickiest of questions for tests. Gives partial credit for some students but not others even when those who don't get credit have much better answers. last spring, out of 45+ about 17 finished course. Don't know how many passed. Bizzare experience for me.
This teacher needs a projector in order to lecture. He doesn't know exsactly what he's doing, and gets upset when you correct him. Avoid this guy unless you want to work hard out of the book, and go to lecture only to get sleep or confused.
this dude needs a over head in order to teach. seems like he's learning the material with the class. all right as a person but really doesn't seem to know what he's talking about. if you correct him he gets pissed off and stares you down. unless you're a hot girl stay away from this guy
WORST TEACHER AT CITY!Stay away. Condescending, rude, isn't helpful at all.Never in my life had I been trated badly by any of my professors until him.40 people started the class, at the end ONLY 8 REMAINED.Everyone dropped out because this man is insane. Yells and stares you down a lot for asking a question and won't answer it if he thinks its dumb!
This class is hard, but as long as you keep up with the readings and homework, you'll be fine. He's very approachable in class and office hours; he does his best to help you learn, if you just try. Dr. Covalt is a great chemistry professor- I highly recommend him!
Nice guy...BUT he expects WAAAAYYYY too much out of us for a 5 week summer course. A SUPER ANAL grader and thinks that chemistry is our life. Grading tactics are confusing as some people who have better answers get lower scores than others whose answers are worse. Take someone else...NOT THIS GUY!!!
He loves Chem and teaches as such. I took the 5 week course studied 50+hrs/week and could not get anything higher than a C. I do not recommend him at all. Very hard tests, no review, no equations, all problem solving for tests, no homework or quizes to help grade. If you need A or B do not take him.
If you are serious about school, this is your guy, if you just want an easy class, he is not your guy. He works you hard, is difficult and has no time for lazy people. Definately difficult, but is worth it. At least you learn. If you want an easy proffessor, go elsewhere, if you want to learn, he is your guy. Difficult but great teacher
He is great! Really opened my eyes to chemistry. The work is tough but, you learn alot. He works you hard. Pushes you to do well, Students who are just in the class for grades hate him and drop out, but, those that work hard, learn alot. personally, I got the start I need for more upper chemistry that I am taking. Not your guy if you are lazy.
I still have nightmares about this guy, he is a sad excuse for a person, and a teacher. I advise you to never take this professor, he seems okay at first, but he makes you feel stupid, and likes failing students...only 3 people passed out of 7, there was ony 7 people left in his class after the drop deadline! Speaks for itself....
By far the worst science teacher I've ever had. His teaching consists only of a projector because the chalk board requires knowledge. Lecture consists of him regurgitating the book and showing its images via powerpoint. Never works problems, show examples, maintains class enthusiasm, or exemplifies scientific knowledge. Avoid if u want 2 learn chem
Not really nice or personable, but it gets way worse. As a teacher he doesn't know the subject well. You know how some teachers are just really knowledgeable, well this is NOT one of those teachers. He struggles with the subject, and therefore gets frustrated , embarrassed, and mean. Take ram at least he knows and loves ochem or go to mesa
He's the best. He's hard, but he really cares. He cares as much as you do. If you don't care and if you just want to whine, then don't expect him to care. But if you try and come to office hours, and ask questions, then he will bend over backwards to help you. Plus he shares things about himself which makes him more approachable and human.
One word: "awesome!" He's tough, but he cares. You just have to get passed the fact that you will be wrong sometimes, and he'll tell you so. Just listen to what he has to say, take good notes, go to office hours, and you'll be fine. Also, he is really personable and shares a lot about himself to the class. Very cool!
Summer class. The answer to every lab question: "See your lab manual..." or "You should have read that in the lab manual". So maybe I read it and can't remember every detail not concerning the procedure. The lab manual was always more helpful than he was and so we gave up on asking him anything. I didn't see that he cared about students like said.
Definitely have to put time and effort into his class. He grades tough, too. This class is no joke. BUT to even things out he is very approachable, respond to e-mail lightening quick, and he cares about the students.
Great teacher, difficult class, but the prof knows his stuff
This guy is the worst instructor I have ever had! His teaching style is horrible and his tests are ridiculously long- average: 3 hrs!!
I learned absolutely nothing in this class simply because this guy cannot teach. You will learn more talking to a wall about organic chemistry. Long tests and WILL NOT PREPARE YOU FOR ORGANIC II!!
Very poor instructor! I enjoy chemistry but between the crazy amount of required homework questions and the length of the tests you will not have time to grasp the subject. You will be much better off taking the class elsewhere! He doesn't prepare you for his tests- his teaching is a joke!
Take any teacher other this guy. He will make you hate chemistry. You will learn more and have a better experience elsewhere. If you don't take this advice you will realize how big of a fool you are once the semester is underway.
Great professor. His class is challenging, but organic chem is not EASY. Most of the whiners are probably people who decided to take a full load of classes with a full time job, etc. He is available for office hours, and he answers all your questions in class. The whiners are used to getting easy "A's" that require no work or proof or mastery.
Knows his material. Teaches pretty much straight from the text. If you come prepared you should do well. Don't come unprepared and expect to do well. He is helpful if you take advantage of it. Take him if you want to learn and earn an A. Take someone else if you don't want to learn, get an undeserved A, and fail your later courses.
Avoid unless you already know chem-1 powerpoint utilize improper characters 2 text is contradicted 3 no division (only multiplication by fractions) 4 processes taught without full knowledge of process 5 no corrections only line through wrong answers 6 office hours not always kept Grading fair-professor has phd but is not a good teacher yet, lazy
Come prepared to class.Do your assignments. He will help you with all your questions. Not a class for someone who is looking for an easy A.
He's like a SEAL instructor that wants you to ring the bell and drop the class. The class started with 35 and only has 5 students left in the class. His tests are very hard and makes the class harder than it should be and teaching as if it's a big-wig university class. Jeez it's only just a community college class.
Worst teach I've ever had. He was not helpful when we had questions. He skipped stuff in the syllabus and constantly opened the lab late... but we were expected to turn in assignments the first 5 min of class so had to wait outside in the cold for a half hour. He accused most of the class of plagiarism w/o proof. Plus he's just a total Jerk.
worst teacher i've ever had, period. he is a complete d-bag. doesnt know how to teach and he doesnt even understand the material that is being taught. you've been warned
Skips stuff in the syllabus? WTF are you talking about? He was the most thorough prof I've ever had. He followed the schedule in the syl to a T. Maybe someone should play "My Heart Bleeds for You" on the violin while you write. Yes. 80% dropped, but those 80% were either stupid, lazy, or both. I'm sick of being in classes with the ENTITLED!
to the previous reviewer(s), chem 200 is a joke, anyone can teach that. when more than 90 percent of students drop a class consistently then something is wrong with the instruction. Chemistry is my fav subject and this guy lost me. he tests you on stuff that he doesnt even understand. i hope you take chem 233 with this d-bag, u will eat your words
He will rip you a new one. To be fair, he knows what he's talking about, but he doesn't want to teach it, only show people how much he knows about it.
Unbelievable, FOUR YEARS AGO I emailed this professor expressing how disappointed the class was with his lack of compassion. A FEW DAYS AGO I got an email from him (Dr. Covalt) that said I was incompetent and he is tenured. I have my BS from UCSD in Physiology & Neuroscience. He degrades capable students to make himself feel good. He is psychotic.
dr covalt is definitely hard and shouldnt be taken unless you love chemistry and want a taste of upper level classes. i'd have much more respect for the guy if he werent a catholic republican, but i def learned chemistry
Covalt isn't nearly as bad as people make him out to be.Truth is if you go to his office hours hes a really freindly guy.He is more than happy to go over problems in explicit detail during this time.He sets his C at 60 percent or so to compensate for the very high standards he places on you.You will be TOTALLY prepared for future chemistry courses.
Get out while you can!!
Dr.Covalt's behavior is abusive. No matter what you do and how much you work at classwork it will not matter because he will find a way to fail you. You are not allowed to ask any questions, and if you do you will be yelled at. You are not allowed to explain yourself, because no matter what he is always right. He's inappropriate. Dont take this cla
hard!

Those of you below who are complaining are the ones who skated through 152 without learning anything (and knew it), and then are surprised you are not prepared for Chem200. It's not Dr. C's fault. I went to his OH, I took his exams, and I asked him ?'s and had no problem. Whiners need to stop blaming Dr. C. and start looking at themselves.
This guy is a joke, never had a teacher in my entire life this bad
I took him for multiple classes, and can honestly tell you that he really doesn't give out A's. In my three classes I took, I got an A in 200, no one got an A in 201, or 232. Also he has a greater than 60% dropout rate. But he is a great teacher.
Don't bother asking him questions, he won't be courteous enough to stop what he's doing during lab to help you, points you to the lab tech instead. Really though, he will answer questions if you have them but doesn't vibe that he cares if you understand or not and will dock you hard if you are not crystal clear that you understand the concepts.
Maybe the ? u ask was ass-o-nine. DrC will ans any ? that not covered in intro that pertains 2 the chemistry or concepts (not procedure that is clearly presented in manual). ? about where stuff is or broken equipment that can only be taken care of by tech are directed to (guess who?)-the tech. No sense in DrC getting up & ring bell if u can do it.
He is a hard professor, but on the bright side, you will be totally prepared for your chemistry future. It is chemistry, the central science, we have to study hard!!
I had a 4.0 GPA before I took this guys class. My tutor who is a graduated Chemistry major told me that his exams are harder than the exams she took in graduate school. Absolutely nothing you can read in the provided text book will prepare you for the exams. There was 25 students. After the drop date there was 7. Two actually passed the class.
All i have to say is why does he have to bring a panel of three students to tell you it's not as hard as it seems. ALSO How many people actually pass his class each semester? umm very very few like 3-4! my roommate who is in medical school now, failed his class when he took it with him.
TERRIBLE! and im a chem major! he is unfair, rude, tests are not even related to what you have studied, homework is useless. DO NOT TAKE HIM! AVOID!
It's funny to read all of these comments bashing Dr. Covalt. I'm a graduate student with a masters in applied probability and statistics and I have not had chemistry since my freshmen year at UIUC. When I looked at the questions it reminded me of a professor I had a NIU. If a student understood the material then they should be able to answer most i
He will help you out with your problems if you are willing to work hard. He is a good professor.
Avoid at all costs. I don't care if this is the last class you have to take. Wait another semester if you need to take it. His test are impossibly hard. He says he's there to "help" but he mustn't know the definition of the word. Over 60% of the class failed. Lab is doable, but avoid lecture. Run while you can
take it if you want to suffer for a C grade. Try as hard as possible and you will get a C. Impossible to get an A. unless you repeat class with him. I did study hard like he said but, he made the course harder than it is! so every test was a C grade. drop class when ever you can and find a real teacher.
I have my BS in Kinesiology and had to take this class as a prereq for a grad program, and let me tell you...this guy is awful. not a single person passed his first test. his response was "everyone shouldve studied harder." his avail to help students is small. and if u go in with ?s he criticizes as to why you dont already know. DONT take his class
He did not care about the class. He made lab class start an hour earlier than what was stated on the syllabus, which really made it inconvenient for people who work full time to get to class on time. He sometimes left the classroom unattended during experiments which is irresponsible & dangerous.
Dr. Covalt is an awesome professor. His nickname is "mount Covalt" because in the beginning of the semester, he assigns alot of work and his tests are difficult, but as long as you stick with it, he eventually eases up and will work with you to get the grade you deserve. I have a 3.6 GPA and am a Bio major. Dr. Covalt is definitely worth taking.
People complain about Dr.Covalt but i loved him, he makes you work hard, but when you are through with the class you know the material thoroughly, and you feel like you can actually apply it in the real world. Awesome Professor!
Very down to earth Professor. He explains material very well, he does expect you to put a lot of effort in work you turn in. He gives you many extra credit opportunities which definitely helps raise your grade. Definitely recommend Dr. Covalt, but really try your best, because it can be hard material, but he really emphasizes he wants you to succeed
I've taken the up to Differential Eqns, the gen bio sequence, and o chemistry... His chem 200 was the most challenging. His class prepped me for all my other classes since... Tough work, but it pays off. Anyone who wants to learn chemistry and not just fulfill a requirement should take his class. HARD class, but will make subsequent classes easier
Difficult exams. The final was given by the district and thats the only thing that remotely salvaged the grade. VERY exam heavy grading system.
I'm earning my 2nd Bachelor's Degree and this is the WORST teacher I've ever had: Teaches the class as though everyone is majoring in chemistry, can't convey his points effectively, and very harsh/picky grading on exams. Avoid him AND DR. CRISPEN at all costs! Go to Mesa. Extra credit was the only thing that salvaged my grade. Hardest B ever.
Covalt is a terrible professor. He is very mean, not helpful at all, boring, unreasonable when asking questions, and completely dispassionate about what he does. Do not take this professor or you will suffer from his terrible class and terrible attitude.
Dr.Covalt is seriously the worst chemistry teacher i've ever had! He is very rude and will make you feel dumb. He will answer every question with " read the syllabus" or " read the lab manual" but will never give you help himself. doesn't know how to teach, much less how to act like a decent human being. DO NOT TAKE HIM UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES
Horrible professor, Ive never had a teacher who is so unwilling to help students. Dont bother asking him questions, he will just give you rudedegrading replies. He will try to fail you from the start and wont give up until the end... Tests are extremely hard and his grading is ridiculous. Chemistry is great but this guy ruins it. I passed barely.
I have never worked so hard and barely earned a C in both his lecture and class. Prepare for TONS of work. He LOVES quizzes: pre-lab, nomenclature, reading, syllubus (yes, really!) to name a few. Comprehensive exams, online HW, pre-lab assignments, lab reports and more. He is condescending and not very helpful. Take someone else if you can.
His lectures and test are not comparable. He does not care to teach you something. He makes you feel stupid if you ask a question. He is super rude. It's all about him. Avoid his class. He watches youtube instead of demonstrating the labs. NOT HAPPY AT ALL. He wasted my time and energy. I used to loved chemistry, after his class,I started hating it
Just don't.
A lot of pre lab notebook checks which are good and mandatory so you are not wasting his or your time reading lab during class hours. He expects you to come prepared it is like 30 minutes of your time its really not bad. He gives quizzes on readings syllabus and labs before doing them just read them before its simple! He doesn't like dumb questions
I am on the Dean's list at SDSU and have already taken many 300-400 level science courses. This guy is the absolute worst professor I've ever had. Doesn't want you to succeed. You will work day in and day out and he will give you exam's that don't correlate with the lecture. You have sincerely been warned.
Well, that says a lot about the standards at SDSU (very low). All you have to do is come to class prepared and the class is pretty straight forward. If you don't come to class prepared, then don't expect to pass. No hand holding here. Kindergarten as a long time ago.
To reiterating other reviews; If you're not planning on majoring in Chemistry or a Chemistry related field, do not take Dr. Covalt. Why? He assumes Chemistry is your passion, thus you will learn the bulk of the material on your own time. From the horses mouth. So, to pass his class with a dignified grade, work hard, otherwise, don't take him.
What can I say about Dr Covalt. His exams are... interesting, while study guides are provided the exams are multiple choice and each question can have up to 15 different choices (not an exaggeration).
practice problems and extra credit are very similar to the hw. so hw is easy. It clearly reflects what is being learned in class. As for his tests: the questions DO NOT reflect what we did in class or for hw!! you will be thrown off guard when taking the tests. i would not recommend taking him.
I've never felt so lost in a class. The tests are ridiculously hard. He gives you 20 options to be the answer and there could possibly be more than just 1 answer so you have to read through all the questions. The homework does not really reflect the tests so make sure you're prepared.
He has very poor teaching technique. He loads students with home-works. His exams are way different from what he teaches. He refuses to answer your question. Would not recommend him.
To be fair, I think Dr. Covalt is a great guy, but this is not a popularity contest. His class and lecture are unfathomably hard. I have a 4.0 GPA. I took Dr. Gurumurthy for chem 152 and got 100 on every exam (This is not a joke). I was the smartest in the class and I dropped with a high B to save my GPA. I sincerely recommend you take someone else
Worst academic experience of my life. Uninspired, condescending and unclear teacher. Lab and test grading is absurd. Curving is inconsistent. Exams material does not reflect the homework at all. Truly felt that this professor did not have the classes education in mind. Avoid at all costs.
He gives you every tool you need to pass his class, you do have to put in some effort to get a good grade. However you will know your material after taking this class. If you just want an easy grade go listen to the other people crying about him, but if you want to learn, he is great. He's not easy.
The absolute worst Professor. I took his lab and boy were there too many videos to watch about the experiments as well as videos pertaining to topics such as nomenclature before coming to his lab. He quizzed us on the assigned videos, which gave no room for the student to ask questions. I personally believe he's lazy and doesn't want teach the labs
Find. Another. Professor.
This class requires extreme focus, unless you learn fast. Dr. Covalt is a great teacher. He's very adept. However, his tests are very confusing to say the least. The tests are 10 part questions, and there are usually about 30 choices. His questions are nothing like the questions in the book. I had a 98% before the final. Probably a D now. AVOID!!!
I'm not going to sugar coat anything: his classes are difficult. Very difficult. But they're not impossible. I had him for both 200 and 231 and the only advice I can think to give is: Form a study group right away, it will save your grade. Read the textbook before his lecture, and know the homework is more difficult than his exams.
He is a tough professor at first. His personality loosens up over time. His grading is over the top; however, once you get the swing of it, you're golden. Every class, there is a pre-lab test and you can only use notes you took from your lab manual, the same goes for the lab itself. He's not that bad. The class is very passable.
Dr. Covalt is a fair teacher who makes himself readily available. It might take a few weeks to get in the swing of things, but the structure of the class ensures that you understand the concept, not just how to pass a test. There are lots of homework assignments (from a 3rd party), but that means there are a lot of opportunities to make your grade.
2weeks prior to start of semester he sent out emails of 8pg syllabus & safety rulesfor quiz on DAY1. Requires lab report turned in for each experiment and gives you no explanation as to how he wants them done. He refers you to his CONFUSING videos on BB. Not accessible no fast email reply. Seems absent minded. Only pro is you can revise you report
Dr. Covalt will ask you to watch pre-recorded videos for each lab in lieu of in class instruction. He's always willing to help, but he doesn't describe the lab procedure during the lab. A lab report was due almost every week and they are time consuming. His grading is very fair and he gave us extra credit and let us drop low scores.
i took him for lab and its A LOT OF INFORMATION. lots of reading and writing every single week, but its to make sure you understand the purpose of lab as well as lecture). its a college experience for sure. hes funny and will be silly, but take the class seriously.
Cool professor. Just follow instructions and take extra credit opportunities, and you'll do well.
Doesn't give any instructions in class. He requires you to watch his videos on blackboard and read lab manual to write a background and procedure in your notebook. You can use your notebook during his quizzes and lab. He doesn't allow lab manual during lab. Prepare properly and you'll do well. He drops 3 lowest lab report/quiz grades.
O-Chem is tough with any teacher, he understands this and tries to make it digestible. The problem is he uses a poor textbook (Wade) when far better options exist (Klein). Doesn't discuss problems from tests, some tests you never get back so it's hard to gauge your comprehension. Can be secretive and unpredictable, but generally there to help you.
Im still enrolled in this course as we speak. If your reading this and on the fence about taking his class DONT. Genuinely cares about chemistry, not YOU. Seems absent-minded a lot and spends the entire lecture doing ALL of the talking. I havent even taken the first exam and I regret taking his class. Go somewhere else !
Worst experience. Treats you as dumb when asking questions. No feedback, communication and cooperation. Let's you fail and doesn't care about you. It cares about the subject but that is. Not recommended. Disappointed. Go somewhere else where your work won't be taken for granted.
Please take this course somewhere else. He doesn't care about students. Never before did I feel that my work was so dissapreciated. I rather postpone my course than mess up my GPA due to his lack of involvement.
Prof Covalt isn't that bad. The tests throughout the semester are hard, but the final is not. He drops lowest exam grade. 25 online homework assignments due online, but drops lowest 6. Attendance not mandatory. He records lectures. Textbook not necessary either. Lab was usually quick, we would get out an hour early every time.
Ok, im just gonna say this. I worked so hard to pass this class, I put in hours of work, I spent about 4 hours a week in the tutoring labs, and 20 hours a week on my own studying. While this class was very very hard to pass, if you have the time and dedication you can pass.
Terrible teacher! He shows absolutely no interest in the subject and makes you feel stupid when asking a question. His lectures are extremely long and not clear. Aside from his lecture, the lab work is ridiculous. He makes you copy everything word for word from a lab notebook that you paid for, into a personal lab notebook. DO NOT TAKE HIM!
Dr. C. was a great instructor. He really wants you to learn the material, and he's willing to be flexible with you. He drops the lowest three lab reports! He drops the lowest three pre-lab quizzes. I don't know of another professor that does that. So, you have a lot of room for error. Lab reports are easy. Just follow his format.
This prof. is great. The best part is that he understands where you are comin from and will work with you. He drops the lowest 4 lab reports and the 4 lowest quizzes. You get 8 freebies! You can have a couple bad weeks and still get an A. Seriously. No other prof does this. He may be tough sometimes, but it's balanced by his flexibility.
Not a bad professor at all. He gives you a lot of breaks and is wiling to work with you.
Dr.C. is great. I makes himself super available. He answered my emails at 1 am in the morning about 30 minutes after I sent them. He is flexible. He drops a large number of lab reports and quizzes. He has his way of how to write up and turn in lab reports, and if you follow his instructions, the you will get and "A" or a "B" easily!
He really does care if you care. If you need break, then he give you a break. If he doesn't give you a break, then it's because he already gave you one with LOTS of dropped assignments and dropped quizzes. You already come into class with 6 freebies. You can do poorly on lab reports three time, and it won't affect your grade. Same for quizzes!
He gives you a lot of work, but it's not his fault. It's the work that comes with the class. Actually, he gives less work than the other profs from what I heard. He has not final exam and no lab practical. All he grades you on are pre-lab quizzes and lab reports, and he drop your lowest three of those.
Just follow his instructions and examples, ask him questions, and submit work on time. You will do well if you just do that (and you will learn a lot in the process). His Canvas is set up super straight forward. So, it's easy to follow, and everything you need is there. His videos are GREAT!! Oh, and he drops the low 3 lab reports and quizzes.
He's great! I passed with an A, and it was very easy. It was a lot of work, but as long as you follow his instructions you'll do fine. If you don't follow his instructions, then... well... you won't. You really have to work hard not to pass his class.
The guy is awesome! Very flexible and easy going. Just listen to his instructions.
Very inflexible when and unreasonable when it comes to working with students during pandemic and assignment scheduling and workload. Has quizzes open for a set number of hours 6am-10am however when I reached out to him to ask to take the quiz later in the day because of work he changed the quiz time to 3am-10am to do before work.
Bombards my email before the semester even began with 5-10 paragraphs per email, he is COMPLETELY UNREASONABLE. He makes test due every single week from from 3am-10am Dsnt even give you a wk to complete anything Assignments are locked until the day of. I am an essential worker and he makes something due everyday at specific times. its only week 2.
Covalt is not only rude, but does not like answering questions. Finds a way to somehow micromanage even when there is no set time to meet via zoom for class. He is unreasonable in grading which gives off the impression that student success is not in his best interest. Not understanding of the pandemic, assumes everyone is sitting at home bored.
HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE. Seriously, avoid at all costs. The most unclear instructions Ive ever seen, mandatory quiz windows 5am-10am and he WILL NOT budge if you have work during those hours, he does not care. Good luck reading the 5+ pages of material needed for every lab. Most tedious class Ive ever taken.
Class said it had no set time. Quizzes are open from 3am-10am. I work at night and its hard to wake up so early for the quizzes. If he wanted a set time for quizzes he should not have put no set time for the class. He will not let you take them later. He does not give clear instructions. I would stay away from this class at least until covid isbove
He was not cooperative with his students this semester. He may need to change but I only speak for us fall 2020. He was rude, constantly gave coppied and pasted responces. He never helped when we asked. He made us purchase a 400$ kit that did not come in on time. And made it our fault. I would be glad to not see him again.
He made us pay $400+ for a lab kit that didnt even get here on time and theres no refunds. Instructions unclear on homework and lab reports and he wont answer questions clearly outside of class. Grading is tough on lab reports and it doesnt even seem like he actually reads our work.
Avoid at all costs. He is condescending and a narcissist. Responded to questions with questions and refused to give direct answers. Consistently made errors but expected perfection from students. Ridiculed classmates in front of others. Can you get an A? Yes. But there are other teachers who are more considerate you should consider instead.
This class had a ton of busywork that he claimed wasn't busy work. Easy grader for lab reports, but check everywhere he may have put instructions on how to do something bc the instructions are never all in the same place. Definitely email the report to him before submitting. And most people failed at least half the quizzes. Can drop 3 though
He's great! As long as you follow his instructions when writing up your lab reports and lab notebooks and submit them in the correct format, then you'll probably end up with an A. You obviously have to try your best to do the experiments and collect the data and write things up, but if you try your best, then you really can expect good feedback.
Seriously. All you need to do is make sure you go through his first two modules carefully and follow his directions when submitting assignments. Prepare your notebooks and lab reports and submit them correctly, and you're pretty much guaranteed an A. You do have to do the work, but it's not hard. Email work to him early to get GREAT feedback!!
Easy A. You work at your own pace. I was able to get all my work done early enough to send it to him as a rough draft and got great feedback. So, I made corrections and submitted my assignments early. I was finished three weeks before the end of the semester. It was great. He is super accessible.
He drops the three lowest scoring quizzes and lowest scoring lab reports. That's SIX freebies you get in his class. So, if you have a bad day (or couple of days) it won't hurt your grade. If you don't have any bad days, then use your freebies to take a week or two off to study for another class. He does not give exams!!!
I believe everyone taking the class right now is getting an A or B. He is very clear in what he wants and gives you a lot of feedback. If anyone is failing, then I have no idea why. The work is pretty straight forward and with the exception of quizzes you pretty much can work at your own pace as long as you meet the due dates.
Great prof! Very flexible. He tells you exactly what you need to do to earn a good grade. Follow his instructions, and you'll do well. Get stuff done early and email him your rough drafts. He'll give you feedback that you can then use to improve your work and increase your grade. He also drops the LOWEST THREE LAB REPORT GRADES.
He really care. Dropping three lab report and three pre-lab quiz (6 total) was a real awesome thing. With all the stuff going on it help a lot knowing that I can have a bad day (or two!) and have it not affect my grade. He very available. He answers email almost immediately and if not he answer within an hour (usually). Great prof.
I agree with the other positive reviews. His instructions are clear. Yes. He is a stickler. So, follow his instructions. However, he does give you clear feedback. So, all you need to do is make sure you don't repeat the mistakes. He also drops three lab report grades and three prelab quiz grades. NO ONE ELSE DOES THAT. Nice. Saved my butt!
The best part is how many lab reports he drops. He will drop the three lowest lab reports and the three lowest pre-lab quizzes. Knowing that really lowered the stress levels when stuff comes up and you just can't get something in. This saved my grade.
Man! What a great teacher! While he is a stickler for the rules he sets up his online class in a flexible way. You need to submit things by the deadlines, but you can work ahead on stuff and get it all ready and saved on your computer early. Then, you can submit it early or send it to him as a rough draft to look over. He drops 6 assignments!
What can I say? It's an easy A. If you follow his instructions, then you get an A. If you don't follow his instructions, then you won't get an A (or a B). There's really no excuse given that he drops the three lowest lab report scores and the three lowest pre-lab quiz scores.
He's really flexible, and he answers your emails very quickly, many times within minutes. He also gives you plenty of opportunities to do well.
Avoid at all cost! Even in his the reviews that he obviously writes himself he is extremely condensending check out the other schools as well. I emailed him from the hospital that I was unable to complete the quiz, he said I should of planned ahead better. Almost his entire class has dropped the class and numerous complaints filed against him.
Great professor! I highly recommend him. It's tough at first. After some effort and getting feedback from him you can be on your way to an A or B. Lot's of low assignments dropped automatically too. He's flexible. When I was having medical issues he moved deadlines for me so that I could have an opportunity to complete and turn in the work.
Lots of expectations and requirements. Labs & reports were really time consuming. Due dates were weird and quizzes had to be done during 5am to 10am. Things were due every other day & although u were able to work ahead & on ur own time, I was not able to handle this course due to my procrastination and work from other classes. Take at ur own risk.
I don't know. I guess for some this class might seem difficult. I did not. The first week or two is harry as you are navigating through the syllabus and getting used to his expectations, but after that it was pretty straight forward. I could have gotten an A in the class, but I slacked off a little too much. However, he was super available.
Well, the first week was tough, but everything was very straight forward. At first I was struggling, but dropping of lab reports really saved me. I felt I could make mistakes and learn from them without it affecting my grade much. He's also super available over emails. He's always answered my emails within an hour if not by the end of the day.
Great class! He drops the THREE lowest lab reports and THREE lowest pre-lab quizzes. 'nuff said.
I'll admit that the first week is tough mainly because you're trying to get used to all the things you need to do, but it really isn't that much. Just seems like it. Get started right away if you can (he sends you an email a month before class starts with stuff you can start on). After the first few weeks you realize it's not bad at all.
This was a great semester. He is super available. Whenever I emailed him he literally responded within the hours (most of the time within minutes). He was always super helpful. Definitely take his class before it fills up. He drops the three lowest scoring lab reports and the three-lowest scoring pre-lab quizzes. No one else does that!!
I enjoyed the class. It was very easy and straight forward. The requirements for the class are not much, but he does require that you follow directions. If you follow all his directions, then you'll do well.
Only bad thing is that requirements for assignments can be scattered across different modules so it can take time to search for it. If taking online, labs can take a couple of hours so set time aside for that. During the first part of the course, note that many things need to be handwritten and can't be typed.
Get ahead early. Only thing you work on for the first half of the class is preparing notebooks and taking pre-lab quizzes. You can complete as many notebook entries as you can ahead of time. Then, once you finish your pre-lab quiz you get started on the experiments. Getting ahead the first half of the semester makes second half a walk in park.
He was very helpful and gave feedback on my rough drafts. Always returned my emails quickly. He is super organized and has his Canvas shell organized so that everything is easily found. He states in his lab schedule the module/page that everything is found in. So, as long as you go to the lab schedule you'll know what module you should be in.
Curriculum is disorganized, challenging to navigate, nothing is in order Online so I thought it's a flexible class it is definitely not There are multiple inflexible deadlines The class is 1 unit should only require 3 hours of work a week is WAY more. WAY TOO MUCH WORK! Discretionary points no idea what for, dropped me to a C. had 4.0, he ruined it
This requires about 6-7 hours of work each week. FYI 1 unit is 3-hour requirement. professor has thrown all information he has related to the class in Canvas. has no interest in student success, just posting everything to let students figure it out on their own. responds to questions with questions, says to refer back to LONG videos and rewatch.
Just awesome. If you follow his lab schedule, then it tells you what module to do when. There's absolutely no guesswork. He answers emails right away. He tells you where to go to find what you are looking for, and if you can't find it, then he'll help you get the information you need. Easiest class I have taken.
I don't really know what others are talking about when they say he is not helpful. I emailed him all the time and received feedback right away. I made rough drafts and sent them to him. He sent me feedback that allowed me to make corrections which lead me to getting perfect scores on lab reports. His lab schedule tells you everything.
He's absolutely the best. Take him if you can. He's the only professor that will drop the three lowest lab reports and three lowest pre-lab quiz scores. He's super accessible via email.
It was a great semester. Even though it was online it was very straight forward. With his lab schedule and the modules you always knew what was next, what was due, and what you needed to focus on. He's also accessible by email (always responded within the hour), and he drops the three lowest lab reports and three lowest pre-lab quizzes.
He's very understanding and very encouraging. When I was ready to quit he took the time to talk to me and calmed my frustration and fears. He encouraged me to hang in there, and I'm glad I did. He drops the three worst lab report scores and the three worst pre-lab quiz scores. This was a godsend. I definitely needed those freebies!!
Simply AWESOME!! Great at being available! Great feedback! Great flexibility! Great everything. The first week or two is a challenge because you're getting used to when things are due and how to submit things on Canvas, but after that it's pretty smooth sailing. Do yourself a favor and take his class.
I really enjoyed the self-paced nature of his class. His instructions were clear, and he gave good feedback. He allowed the submitting of rough drafts and would give feedback on those as well. While it was busy, it was manageable.
It was difficult for the first week, but after that it was smooth sailing. Definitely take him. He will help you. He drops the three lowest assignments.
Great professor. Very understanding. He has clear guidelines. I especially appreciated the fact that he dropped the three lowest lab reports. I had life get in the way of handing in a few lab reports, but it didn't affect my grade at all. It was super helpful.
Just make sure you follow his instructions. If you do that, then it's an easy "A". All work is submitted online, and all the reading and videos you need it available on Canvas. So, when you get to lab you just get started on the lab. You'll get out early every time. He also drops the three lowest pre-lab quizzes and three lowest lab reports.
It's true what the other reviews say. The first week is tough, but most of that is just getting used to the class expectations, which is normal. After the first week or two you will get used to it, and it should be smooth sailing from there. Once you understand what he is looking for it should be a pretty easy class. There are no surprises.
This class is pretty reasonable if you follow instructions. He's pretty clear in what he wants you to do to prepare for class. So, do that. If you don't know what needs to be done, then he'll point you in the right direction or just tell you straight out what you need to do. Always ask questions.
No lab practical. No lab final of any kind. No exams. He only gives quizzes. Your grade is based on pre-lab quizzes and lab reports and discretionary points, and as long as you hand in all your work and try your best to follow his directions (and learn from your mistakes) you should almost all your discretionary points.
Simply the best. He's very clear in what he wants. There are no surprises. The Canvas shell is straight forward. He's very approachable and will answer your questions. It's easy to earn a high grade in his class if you just take what he says seriously and just try your best.
He was great. Very understanding and funny. He's very approachable, and he gives you a lot of breaks if you can't turn in an assignment for whatever reason. He drops the lowest three lab report scores. He is simply awesome.
I am taking his on campus summer course (16 weeks in 8 weeks). He's great! This class is fast-paced because it is a summer course, but things are so well organized that it really helps you get prepared and know what you need to do and when. He is super helpful in the lab. Since all work is submitted online you have a LOT of time to work in lab
Great prof. Super approachable. If you have a question, then he'll take the time to help you see the answer and understand. If you don't like your lecture professor, then ask him in lab, and he'll answer your questions. He is super flexible and gives you lots of "freebies". He drops the three lowest lab scores and the three lowest quiz scores.
This was an easy A. Just follow his directions and you'll do fine. The first week is tough getting used to everything, but he will answer your questions and help you figure out what you need to do. After the first week it's easy peasy lemon squeezy. The fact that he drops three lab reports is AMAZING.
Dr. C. is simply the best. If you have a chance to take him, then you will not be disappointed. He's kind and helps you, and he's funny. He does makes learning fun.
Awesome. Everything everyone has said that is positive is right on. It's comfortable to ask questions. There's no pressure. Everything is organized well. You get lots of chances to do well. Take him if you can.
I highly recommend taking him. Just follow his instructions and come to lab prepared, and you will do fine. Ask questions if you have them. Watch his videos and go through his Canvas shell, and you'll have everything you need. Don't skip things in Canvas or you'll be sorry. If you do all this, then it will be an easy course.
I have to say that the first week is a challenge, but most of that is due to just getting used to how the class is run. After that it's pretty straight forward. His expectations are clear. If you follow his instructions, then you will do well. He also drops the many lab reports and pre-lab quizzes. So, having bad days doesn't hurt you.
All the 5 star reviews are fake, DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS for any reason, I didn't listen for the honest reviews until I had the LAB class and man... Is such a bad class and the lab practices is not like similar if you compare with the other CHEM 152 classes. Professor James C. if you read this, stop faking reviews and improve your teaching&course.
Professor James, if you are reading this comment stop writing fake reviews is just affecting students and your reputation; anyone who requires this class for your major/transfer, do it with another professor. Trust me, I underestimate the bad reviews until took the class. AVOID IT.
The lab experiments were straight forward and made a lot of sense. They helped with understanding the lecture material. His Canvas shell is pretty straight forward as well. He's super approachable. He will answer all your questions, but make sure you have gone through the material on Canvas first since he answers 99% of the questions you have.
He pretty much tells you what you need to do to succeed in his class. There's flexibility with his assignments in that he lets you turn in early, but you can't turn stuff in late. However, he gives you a lot of freebies with the assignments and quizzes though. He's pretty funny and easy to talk to. Just make sure you come prepared.
I really liked him. He's no nonsense, but he's fair. He gives you lots of freebies, but he does stick to the syllabus. Don't expect him to change deadlines for you, but he does drop the three-lowest scoring lab reports. He's fun to talk to in the lab, and he's flexible when he can be.
Dr. C. was great. All assignments are submitted electronically. So, you have more time in lab to do the lab experiments. This means we usually got out early. What he wants in his assignments is pretty clear. If you follow his instructions, then you'll get a high score. Just try your best to perform the experiment well and get good results.
He was really good. I liked him. He was flexible, and I like the fact that work is submitted electronically. He has very clear instruction, and his videos are great. Most of the time you get out of lab early. So, that's a plus. I would definitely take him again.
If you get the chance, then take him. He's easy. He tells you what he wants on lab reports, and as long as you follow his instructions and try your best you will do well on your assignments. He drops three lab reports and three pre-lab quizzes. That helped me a lot. I didn't have to do the last lab since I could just drop it. Take him.
Dr. Covalt likes to make lab enjoyable. However, his lab is tedious and makes you write out lab notebooks to turn in for no credit. I would take about 1 hr to complete it, take pictures of it, then submit online. His morning quizzes were a pain because it was more like a guessing game than a quiz to see if you read the manual. Overall not the worst
Have to say that he made the class fun. He's very laid back. If you ask him for feedback on your assignments before you hand them in, then he'll give you good feedback. Take him if you can.
This class was fun, but it was also work. It's work you expect though. Very clear. Gives great feedback. I didn't do well in the course, but that was my fault. I wouldn't have passed at all if it weren't for him dropping so many lab reports AND pre-lab quizzes. He's funny, but he's also serious. Take him if you can.
Great professor. The lab is a very relaxed atmosphere. Just make sure you are being safe! He is big on everyone coming prepared and being safe. If you do that, then you'll have a great time in the lab.
I honestly was not sure about this teacher based on some aweful reviews but it was the only time that fit. It actually was not bad at all. He makes it easy to get a full credit on the labs. the videos for the labs are very helpful. If you ask him a question he does help and asked me questions about what I was struggling with.
This was a great class. All you need to do is follow the instructions and turn in your assignments complete and on time. He's very accessible outside of class and helps you during class and during office hours.
Great instructor. Take him if you can. He really tries to work with you.
He's great. He's clear. Once you get the hang of the class, then it's smooth sailing. There's really not much to it. You just need to show up and follow directions. If you do that, then you'll definitely pass, and you'll probably pass with a good grade. Take him if you can.
I love this teacher He is very patient and I learned a lot from him.
He is great! Take him if you can. He's very reasonable, and he will work with you. Just don't give up.
The first two weeks are tough only because there's a lot to get used to, but his class is super conveient. He has videos for everything, and it was great being able to watch them whenever I could. Once you get used to the routine, then it's all smooth sailing from there. I would definitely recommend him to anyone.
Super nice. Very laid back. He will answer questions when you have them, but he will let you work independently. He responded quickly to emails - usually within an hour at all times of the day. Take advantage of sending him rough drafts before the assignments are due and make the corrections he suggests. It will save you HUGE number points.
This guy is awesome! This was the best summer experience I have had in a chemistry lab. :-)
I had a great experience with this professor. He gives clear instructions. He's very personable. I enjoyed having him as my professor.
He's a great professor. He's clear in what he wants, and while he is a stickler for due dates, he does make up for it by dropping your lowest assignments to bring your grade up.
Superb! Loved him. He's great!
The most caring prof I have ever had. No matter what problems you are having, he tells you not to worry. I drops three lab reports. That was great for me since I had issues getting to class sometimes. It was great knowing that missing a couple labs did not affect my grade. It's easy to get an "A" in his class. You just have to do the work.
Terrible teacher, this was probably the worst class I have ever taken. Please TAKE ANYONE ELSE and look at all the positive reviews, they sound the same because he writes them. Look at the Miramar reviews for a more accurate depiction of what students think of him. Do NOT take
I really enjoyed having Dr. C. as a professor. It was really clear what he was asking for. The lab was very relaxed. All you needed to do was show up prepared and make sure you follow safety rules. He's really big on safety. As long as you come prepared, you will do well and have a fun time doing it. I would definitely take him again.
Best professor I've had. He is great. He is understanding. He helps you if you go to him.
aggressive and weird
His system is intimidating at first, but it gets easier as the semester goes on. He is available to communicate often so take advantage of that and watch the videos! The videos are so helpful and a lot of the questions you have will be in there. I would get a head start on the videos before the semester starts if you can, there are a lot.
Enjoyed the class. It's very straight forward. He enjoys sharing his life experiences with the class. Lab experiments are interesting, and they don't take up the whole time. We almost always ended lab early. He'll help you, but you do have to come prepared. Don't show up not having watched the videos. You won't be prepared, and he will know
Great instructor. He really cares. He makes class fun and exciting. It was the best class I have taken.
This was the easiest "A" I've ever gotten! All you need to do is follow his instructions. If you come to lab prepared and try your best, then you'll get good data. The rest is just writing up the lab reports following his instructions. Learn from your mistakes, and you'll get an "A". Just like that.
Great prof. Clear one what he wants. Fair amount of work, but if you follow his instructions and ask for help, then you'll be good.
He was a great prof. He was understanding, and he drops the lowest lab reports and quizzes. So, that makes it less stressful. You know you can have a bad week or a bad couple of weeks and still do well.
He is simply the best!
I was intimidated by chemistry, but Dr. C. made it fun and enjoyable. He is very understanding about flexibility and has his materials available to students, and he drops the lowest lab report and pre-lab quiz. This class was low stress.
I really enjoyed his class. He is really laid back, but he makes sure you are prepared for the next course. He stressed safety and lab habits all the time. By half way through the semester you will already be in the habit of always wearing PPE and being safe, and you'll have a good time too!
I took him over the summer. It was an intense 8-week course. Dr. C. made it very manageable and fun. I had a good time. It was hard, but not bad.
It was nice having him as my teacher. The way he wants us to perform the tasks in a certain way really helped me stay focused and improve myself. Before I took the class, I thought I would fail the class, but his way of teaching made me think I could do it. If he is teaching some of the next classes, I will definitely choose him.
Dr. C. gave us a great semester! I don't think I'll take another chem class any time soon for nursing, but I fully enjoyed his chem lab. I thought the work was divided really well, and the expectations of us were clearly laid out. Made this condensed summer course as much of a breeze as it could be amidst the craziness of condensing a chem lab.
He is simply the best.
Professor Covalt makes this intense chemistry lab very manageable. His clear expectations and supportive approach, along with tools like Unstuck study ai, helped me ace the course and have a good time too.
He was simply the best and most caring professor!
Okay. He knows what he wants, and as long as you follow his instructions, then you will do fine. The class starts out with more work, but halfway through the semester is gets a lot easier. So, just follow instructions and stick with it! You'll be fine. Also, he's pretty laid back and funny. :-)
You must watch his videos! He claims that the videos cover everything, so you can't ask questions without being judged. Or resubmit work. Rarely speaks to you in class. Also makes rude comments to everyone, especially when grading work. I gave him a chance, but he's not worth the good rates as I thought he was. DO NOT TAKE!
Very tough grader and takes points for the minimal things. Quizzes are worded confusingly. Feedback on lab reports is VERY vague and makes you wonder what you did wrong. Half of semester he simply sat at his desk during labs and when we would have questions he would refer us to his videos. Uninterested in what he does. BUT it is doable w/ hard work
This professor is worth taking. He is hillarious, but also serious. He wants you to be safe so he stresses safety a lot. Do follow all his instructions, expesially when it comes to writing up lab reports and lab notebooks. It's a pretty easy class if you do that. If you ask him questions he will help you understand the material.
He was great in office hours. Every time I went he was very helpful. I did not have to go often though since he was very approachable in class. If I had ?'s I was able to get what I needed in class since he's so available. Best part is that he has all the info you need in videos on Canvas, which means we can come prepared and get out early!
I love this guy's corny "dad jokes". All you do is make sure to watch ALL of his videos. Make a checklist for preparing lab notebooks and for making lab reports. It was a lifesaver. I had very little trouble, and I always submitted rough drafts. He gave me great feedback that helped me improve my lab reports before submitting them. AWESOME!
This prof. class was frustrating. Prof. always sat at his desk instead of helping lab students. He often forwarded questions to his pre-recorded videos, which didn't cover questions we had. WRITES HIS OWN COMMENTS ON HERE! sounds so repetitive!! One of the worst classes. Suggestions on lab reports do nothing for your grade!
Dr. Covalt cared about our performance in lab. He walked around lab all the time to make sure we were doing things correctly, and if he saw that we were doing something wrong, then he would stop to ask us questions to get us to see the problem and fix it. If we had questions he was always there to answer them. Great professor!!
He was very understanding of my situation and was very encouraging. He was also very helpful when I asked questions and went to his office hours. His feedback on lab reports and lab notebooks were very helpful and are part of the reason I did so well in the class. He's one of the best!
This professor was very willing to work with me, and understood my situation. I honestly would not have done as well if it weren't for him dropping the three lowest assignments. He was always very helpful in the lab.
I really enjoyed this class. I like the fact that Dr. Covalt was so clear in his expectations. I knew exactly what he wanted, and if I was confused I would just ask him , and he would clear it all up for me. It's awesome that he allows the handing in of rough drafts. His feedback helped me get higher grades on lab reports.
He was very laid back and easy going. He gives you a lot of opportunities to do well.
This is a pretty straight forward class. You read the lab manual, prepare a lab notebook, submit a pre-lab quiz, do the experiment, and write a lab report. That's pretty much what you are doing every week, and there are opportunities to improve scores. He allows you to hand in rough drafts. he drops three lab reports and three pre-lab quizzes
Enjoyed the class. There were no surprises. It was a fun and relaxing atmosphere.
From the first day of class it was very clear how the class was gonna go, which was great. He also sent a welcome email that told us what we could expect, and gave materials in case we wanted to get a head start. The prof was very helpful and available.
He gives you everything you need. His Canvas shell is extremely organized, and everything is laid out pretty clearly in the schedule. I never had to guess what was due and when. He was super available in office hours.
He made the class fun and relaxing. I enjoyed going to class.
This call was pretty clear. I learned a lot, and I think I am well-prepared for the next level. The class was very comfortable and low stress. Just follow the instructions and you'll be fine.
Doesn't accept late work and isn't considerate of students' personal situations. It's also hard to get genuine answers to questions bc he's very dismissive + has a rude tone. I wouldn't recommend at all.
So far after a month of class this professor is really good. He's organized. His Canvas is easy to follow. He's clear in his instructions, and his feedback is great.
I really like this professor. He is straight forward and clear in all his explanations. The Canvas is clear and very easy to find what you need. He's very approachable and answers your questions well. I'm enjoying the class a lot.
I didn't perform well, but it wasn't Dr. C.'s fault. He was very understanding and accommodating. He does stick to deadlines, but he helps in other ways. I enjoyed the class. It was not difficult at all. I just had a lot going on and couldn't do my best. He's funny. His Canvas had everything I needed. He's available. This was a great experience.
Great teacher! He's funny and understanding. He's very clear on what he wants, and he has Canvas set up so that everything is very easy to find. The videos are AWESOME! I was very comfortable asking him questions, and he helped me a lot to understand the class. Take him if you want to be prepared for the next level. The class was low stress!
Great professor! Very funny. He is very organized and tells you everything you need to know. He's very straight forward and very clear. He was great at answering questions and explaining things.
He was very organized and approachable. He answered all my questions. Everything is very straight forward, and it's easy to get a good grade in his class. All you have to do is follow his instructions and show up to lab.
I love the fact that you can submit rough drafts and get feedback before you hand in your assignments. I took advantage of this and saved myself a LOT of points because I was able to make corrections before submitting the assignment. He's extremely clear and takes his time when explaining things. He's also hilarious (in a goofy sort of way)!
If you want a relaxing and fun time while doing lab experiments, then definitely sign up for Dr. C. He drops the lowest grades, and that helps a lot. There's not as much stress. You do need to follow directions though. If you do that, then the rest of the course is easy.
I have to say... Thanks to Dr. C. I learned a lot, and I feel very prepared for the next level of chemistry and the other courses I need to take after this class. If you have the chance to take him, then do it. You won't regret it.
This is the most meticulous grader I have ever seen. I don't think by any means that I'm a lab expert, but this guy would take off points for stuff he just simply doesn't like and would take off points for not including data that wasn't required in the lab manual. Combination of ridiculous grading scale and lack of direction made the class a huge L
Held an A the ENTIRE semester & ended with a B+ due to his discretionary points. Never missed a lab, & put in the work. Although he drops 3 reports and quizzes, STILL DO THEM bcs it affects your grade. Mind you i only missed 1 report and 1 quiz, life gets in the way sometimes but he does not care. Not a bad professor, just a real tough grader.
This teacher was really good. He was very clear in his expectations. If you follow his instructions and try your best, then you will get an A in the class. The first two weeks are TOUGH, but after that you get into the groove of things and then it is smooth sailing from there.
Dr. C. was very available to answering questions, which I liked because I had a lot. He was very patient. Every time I sent him an email he responded right away. Sending him rough drafts was helpful as well. I always received great feedback that helped me correct the rough draft before submitting it, and this helped me get higher scores.
Great professor. I didn't do as well in the course as I would have liked, but that's on me. He helped me every time I went to him for help, and my scores were higher than they would have been.
He's very funny in class. He likes to talk to students about random topics. He gives you everything you need. All you need to do is follow the schedule very closely and make sure you make all the deadlines. send him rough drafts as soon as you can to get feedback. He's super helpful!!
The only thing I can praise is his easy to follow schedule. He gives barely any grace for a Introductory chem class. He gives no time for prelab quizzes. Unless you take his lecture as well his class is difficult and unproductive towards learning Intro chem. He also is very unapproachable and almost every question is responded with look at a video
He was great! He answered all my questions. He responded to all my emails, and he went through all my rough drafts and gave me feedback which led to me getting a better grade. He's funny in class, but he is also very serious (especially about safety - do not mess around with safety). He's very approachable. Come to class prepared though.
Thank you, Dr. C, for all your help in this class! I have done great in my chemistry classes since then, and i believe it is due to your class and what you did for us and how you drilled into us the importance of coming prepared. I never forgot. Thank you!!
What I like most about Dr. C. is that he admits when he makes a mistake on a quiz and will give points back without hesitation. He's also very friendly. He has an easy schedule, and his grading is pretty straight forward. He also drops the three lowest lab reports and three lowest quiz scores. This was helpful when I had to miss class.
He was a great professor. He was patient. He gave great feedback. He was funny. He's an understanding professor, and give plenty of chances.
I really enjoyed his class. The lab experiments were fun. The quizzes were not difficult. It was a pretty low-stress class once you got into the swing of things. Right now we have litte work to do because we did lab notebooks early. Now at the end of the semester we only have to perform an experiment each week and write up a lab report.
I really liked him. He was funny. He makes lab fun. You're pretty much left to do the experiment, but he gives you everything you need to prepare. It's a very relaxing environment. He will answer your questions, but be prepared to answer his quesetions. He wants to make sure he understands your question and that you understand his answer.
Dr. C. was genuinely interested in your success. He liked to talk about your interests, and he always encouraged you to keep working hard. His class is a low-stress environment. You do have to come prepared, but he gives you the tools to do that and to do well. If you follow his instructions, then you'll be fine. :-)
Dr. C is very strict on his grading, but won't provide clear standards for what he expects. The labs were elementary, and most people got out early every day.
I just finished a pretty great semester with Dr. C., and it was a good experience. The experiments were pretty straight forward, and he gives good feedback on lab reports. He allows you to send him a rough draft, and he will send you advice on what needs to be fixed. I took advantage of this often and it definitely helped by grade.
I recommend taking Dr. C. He made the subject easier to understand, and lab class is fun with him. We almost always get out early, and he doesn't require us to stay. You need to pay attention to due dates and get things in early if possible. He was always available if I needed help, and he got me to learn the material better.
Dr. Covalt is good professor for lab, for the labs lectures there alway in his module depends which lab are you doing he also made a videos for what we doing in the lab or if we don't understand the lab manual, you need pain attention how you need to write your lab report report most of them are informal but it was in the schedule, he is kind
I feel fully prepared for CHEM 200L. California Clean was drilled into our heads. :-) He was a good professor and cares that you are safe and prepared for CHEM 200L. He gives you lots of chances to do well, and if you have a bad week, then there are pleny of lab reports and quizzes dropped so that bad weeks don't affect your grade.
He really understood me and what I was going through. He was very understanding and was willing to work with me so that I could do better in the class.
