Craven is a good teacher, who knows his stuff. However, his tests are tough. He's willing to go the extra mile to help.
He's a tough instructor, but he really laid the groundwork for all other economics, accounting, and math classes. He even taught skills that most teachers don't think to teach - like *how* to take good notes. His rants are very entertaining!
You'll probably fail his first test, but don't worry the grading scheme will smooth it over. His tests aren't difficult, just phrased in ways your not used to. He's a great professor and a must take. His rants are awesome!
Apparently you either LOVE him or HATE him. I found him to be crude, berating, and offensive. He belittles people who ask questions he deems “stupid”. Isn’t that the idea of taking a class and asking questions? Isn’t that what the learning experie
The lectures were full of info and amusing. He is the most spirited teacher I have ever seen. Loved the class. Don't tick him off. Tests were not that hard, though some people seemed to have trouble. I hear his 200 level tests are much worse.
Welcome to Cravenomics folks! Be sure to wear your seat belts and spend the most of your time durring the term, on this class.
I love going to class. He's my favorite instructor at Clark.
I ended up retaking some of the Econ classes from another professor because I wasn't pleased with my grades in his classes.
Craven teaches critical thinking, something most people, even college students, are unfamiliar with. Only the narrow minded don't love his classes.
I had a very hard time in this class when I really shouldn't have. After just the first day, half the class dropped - I wish I'd had the opportunity. Watch out for his missing finger!
Worst teacher at Clark. If I wanted to hear such political propaganda I would have taken polisci. The Tshirt touting the death of anyone is unacceptable at this school. His lectures are incoherent, and he is unhelpful. He is very biased in his grading.

He is one of the best teachers at clark. One must be commited to failure not to pass his class. He has an unbias grading policy. Everything is multiple choice so there is no room for speculative answers. If your not afraid to think take his class.
I started out hating him I ended up loving him. He opens you up to a whole new line of thinking. The tests were not too hard. The way he calculates grades helps everyone.
Please, please, listen. If you care one iota about an education- take this man. "The winners write the history books," they say. Get a worldview from the oppressed, the silenced, the non-obvious, the critically thinking. No one is silent but man
You either love or hate this guy. Either way, he knows hit stuff. He is a small but vocal force on campus, so that's something to keep in mind when taking his class. Economics and activism all for the price of five credits.
OFTEN UNCLEAR, MAKES MEAN COMMENTS

Yes, Craven knows Econ, but does he know manners? He dishes out rude and condescending comments for those who attempt to answer his questions and get it wrong. My class "shut" down half way through quarter as no one raised their hand. The "Socratic Teaching Method fails to work when you ridicle.
Enemy of the close-minded, Craven has the power to insult pig-headed students with the most ambiguous statements. Those who don't like to think of themselves as ever being wrong will hate this professor. Everyone else will enjoy his mostly-unbiased point of view.
If you know everything, what are you doing in college. If you're not a know it all, then expect to b e enlightened. Craven is the consumate teacher, cares about his students, and their success in life. He's a hardcore professional w/ a keen sense of humor. Take his course when he returns from China.

Jim comes off as rude, and abrasive. He's all that. That said, he's also a 1st rate instructor. You will learn HOW to think, not WHAT to think. READ HIS TEST QUESTIONS 2-3x BEFORE ANSWERING. His tests are about critical thinking skills. Take good notes, he lets you use them on tests.
Tough but fair. Watch out for hours worth of political ranting, however.
boreing! he was jumping from subject to subject. He was alittle much for me.
Mr. Craven is an intense teacher. You will learn so much from him. He comes off very rough but he's a great guy. I recommend him.
Craven is a good man; one of the best teachers I have had. It's love or hate with him though. However, I think if you either really want to learn Economics or love critical thinking and the art of polemic, you'll dig the class. Highly recommended for real STUDENTS but not for seekers of a degree. Clark is lucky to have him.
He's a freak. Great guy though. Kind of a hardass, but thats good if you wanna learn something.

That Jim Craven Is so hot right now
This teacher is very rude. You have to really understand economics to know what is going on in his class. He lectures 100 m/h and his tests are very hard. He lets to use one page of notes on the test but its not as helpful. He also repeats himself in his stories and overall expects too much critical thinking. If this meets your criteria then take h
I thought he was an ass! He spends the whole time stroking his own ego with his stories about the DEA--which he will tell you 5 times every quarter.
Teacher berates students, and teaches as though you already know the subject. Such a jerk you don't feel comfortable going to him for help. Hint: bypass this teacher and take Econ from PCC where they strive to help students understand the subject and teachers egos don't interfere with coaching students in a more considerate, much more helpful way!
He is extremely hard, but he explains things well. If you put in a lot of effort, he'll like you...maybe. You better obey the rules in there, if not you'll fail and you can't do nothing about that. he is full of crap at times, but if you don't mind sifting through crap, then the class is worth taking, because when it comes to econ, he knows his stu
If you are a hrad working person who puts 100% into the class Jim will but in 100% into you
He is so full of himself, you wonder were the economics are. He teaches his opinion(the right way) and everything else is worng. He is also an Native American.....yeah right......total jackass.
You must work very, very hard. Yes, he is a native American and proud of it. If you ask for extra help, he will help you. You must attend every class or you will fail.
Craven is a jerk, what he needs is a good reality check that not everyone thinks he is God. Some people have valid opinions too. The only reason he has his job is because his family is lawsuit happy. Total Jerk.
Bottom Line:Take another teacher.I attended every class, understood the material and even did an extra credit paper.Final Grade:F.I took the class at another college that used the same book, the teacher had a similar teaching style, a PHD in economics and I passed the class with an A. Craven is crude, unrealistic and a very poor instructor.
You are absolutely correct. You must take Econ from another teacher or at another school. The only way for us to push back is for Craven to see an empty classroom on day one. Only then will things change.
I was very confused in his class, the book was very boring, and he was so overbaringly opinionated I wanted to put myself out of my misery. However, I got horrible grades on most of the tests and managed to get a B. I did do well on the other assignments though or maybe I got pitty from him because I was in running start at the time
Craven knows the material front and back. Very odd personality but helpful if you seek for it. Don't get on his bad side if you want to pass.
Craven is one of the worst teachers I have ever had in my entire life. He needs to keep his ridiculous comments to himself because I am not there to here about his ideas on how stupid everyone is, I am there to learn about economics. He never shows up to class either. This is a 3 day a week class, its the 5th week and he has already missed 3 days.
Craven should keep the political stuff to himself and teach economics. He was nice enough if he liked you but not nice it you got on his bad side. I was fortunate to be on his good side.
Mr. Craven is a great teacher. He has been teaching for a long time and knows how to line material up methodologically so that it is understandable. His examples about "little johney" or the singles bar help conceptualize ideas, facts, stats, etc. He doesn't take crap. He demands respect. Arrogance is the only reasons people don't enjoy the class.
good teacher, interesting comments made suring class, helped everyone learn, no written work, pretty fair, bad attendance, he missed alot of classes
Craven is an amazing, unconventional, and brilliant teacher. Do not take his classes if you're looking for an easy A or low attendance. Prepare for a challenging, interactive, and inspiring class experience. You may love him or hate him--but either way, you'll end up learning a ton and thinking about the world in a whole new way.
Knows his stuff!
Craven is not a bad guy. He really cares about his students, and he wants them to think for themselves. Be prepared if you go toe to toe with him about politics. He knows his political position, your position, and everyone elses very well. If your open to new ideals, you'll be okay.
The tests are tough if you don't know the material well enough. This is how they should be though, correct?
A very good teacher, but he stays most of the class time out of economics topics, not making a particular focus on what material would be covered on tests. If you want to take him, be ready to make some textbook reading on your own.
Read and take notes if you want to pass this class. His tests challenge you to think.
most of the people that have commented craven seem to be full of crap. Yes he is hard, yes he is opinionated, but he knows the topics inside and out whether it is directly related to the course or not. This professor is amazing, take the class if u want to learn, if u want an easy A, take someone elses class. Overall: one of the best profs ive had
The best teacher I have ever had. Is he opinionated? Yes. Is the class challenging? Yes. But you will all learn some extremely valuable tools toward your degree. Thank you Jim.
Great teacher! Thinks critically and knows his material. He speaks 7 languages, tells off the wall jokes, and punishes you in his tests. He will teach you tons though, just take lots of notes. Jim Craven is the best I have ever had at any academic level. Thanks alot! By the way he reads these comments, watch out!
An amazing instructor! Calls it like he sees it. His examples are very unforgetable and amusing. He brings economics to life. His grading is fair and tests make you think. Not a class for those who want to skim by. This is a class for those who want to learn! I would take him again in a heartbeat!!
Very fair teacher, tests are multiple choice so he can’t play favorites. However you do need to know your material, this is college. I would take this teacher again

Great teacher. Keeps class "fun" with witty humor and facts. The person who wrote the "rude" comment obviously is the idiot because Craven doesn't teach Econ 101. MUST TAKE NOTE!!!
Mr. Craven seems to really know the economics world but is not terribly effective at transferring that information to his students. You need to work very hard and really pay attention to the book. The classroom lectures tend to be confusing.
Great teacher, but not for narrow minded morons. The test questions are sometimes hard to understand but read them a couple of times and you'll do fine. He kept the class very exciting with stories that related to the topic. Don't take his classes if you are an idiot, heaven forbid you get offended by his hilarious comments.
Singularly one of the best professors ever taken in 40 years (of college); fair, extends himself for all, great lectures; mandates clarity of economics and understanding how they affect one's life and world. I wish they had many more like him - still living!! Not for the weak minded and feable brained - YOU WILL LEARN - to think outside the box!
Great Professor!
GREAT TEACHER, require's understanding of his lectures and exact notes there of. Want your class time to fly by, and the ability to retain information about economics, than Jim's your man. Be prepared to be insulted throughout the course, but be prepared to be rewarded with life long critical thinking skills at the same time.
Jim Craven definitely knows his stuff. He is brilliant when it comes to economics; I just wish he would spend less time spouting his personal opinions (and I usually agreed with him on politics). He makes you think his class is ridiculously hard but if you attend and take notes he is pretty generous. If you are interested in learning, he is great.
Professor Craven is the best teacher I have ever had. He explicitly lays out the course work and relates thing excellently to real world scenarios. His background is impressive and while his rhetoric may sometimes be a bit abrasive, you will learn from it if you can get past the possibility that you're not always correct in your thinking.
Craven's crazy...like a fox. For all of those 'outraged' people out there - consider the fact that he got you THINK - and isn't that what college is about? OMG...he's got a different world view than you??! Shocking! Ya'll are a bunch of crybabies. You should thank him for giving you an education in economics AND critical thinking. Jim - you rock.
I'm not sure why Craven is still at Clark College. He is notorious for his battles with faculty and administration-they made headlines. In ECON he didn't use his own tests--he curved standardized tests from the American Economics Association (or something like it). It proved to be impossible, but I had an A at the end, with a 58%. Go Figure.

In the beginning of the class he seems odd, but by the end of the quarter I found he is a great man. I learned a lot from his class. The only tip is to take pictures of the dry erase board for your notes.
Professor Craven is the most influential teacher I have had. I have learned the most from him. Even if you dont agree with his politics, he is still a genius, simply by his approach and simplicity in the studies of economics. He truly cares about students and literally fights to protect them and their schooling and free thinking.
Really crazy teacher, only has one way of teaching/grading 'his way'. Too busy ranting to make a clear point. Either you like him or you hate him.. I really disliked him.
WORST TEACHER EVER! Very biased and flippant and doesn't care if you fail or not. He is discriminatory against running start students and certain religious values. Even despite his uncharismatic personality, his class was very hard and not worth the time.
The Prog knows his stuff and will make sure you do too. A bit odd with his examples, but they actually work well. He is open to help any student learn the the stuff. Not an easy class, but well worth it.
Wow....If you wanna hear a man scream and yell, then this is your class.
hard prof but very good at teaching students. Colorful metaphors keep the lectures interesting
He is extremely talented at helping students understand. One of the best teachers i've had, however his tests are terrible because he doesn't prepare you for them. He may teach you one thing, but the answer in the test may be different. He words his questions very inaccurately, making life even more difficult. He is leniant, since i got an A-.
Craven is amazing. His exams aren't easy, but if you study, pay attention, and ask questions you'll pass. Show up for class everyday, talk to him if you need help, and you'll end up with an A. The highest exam score I got was a 75%. I walked away with a B, very nearly an A.
Craven, while being one of the worst teachers I've had academically, taught me a lot about critical thinking and questioning the information that society feeds you, which was valuable to me. The examples he used, which I assume were meant to "shock" us, made him look really stupid more then anything. I would avoid his class.
If you dont understand the basics of econ i suggest you drop the class. it is not that he is a bad teacher it is just that he expects you to understand alot before you enter the class
Craven knows his stuff. He teaches you critical thinking on top of Econ. Took all my lower division Econ courses with Craven a while back, now at PSU (Econ Major). Think of his class as a litmus test if you want to be an Econ Major, If you can't cut it with him, change your major now. That's all I have to say.
Tests are hard and he love to throw fits in class. His lectures are all over the place and he is hard to follow. He prides himself on almost impossible tests. His own words "My tests are like trying to walk through the Vietcong Jungle, impossible."
Great thing is you won't need the text book at all. The down side you wont learn a single thing about Macro economics. You will learn all about his illustrious life though. I don't recommend this Prof at all. I got A's in both Econ 101 and 201 from different teachers then a D from Craven...AWESOME
Mr. Craven comes across as a hard nosed guy, but when you take the time to get to know him, he is a teddy bear, with no intention of hurting your grade. His tests are very difficult, but in the end you can do well if you put in some effort.
Craven teaches his own version of class. He only teaches the push and pull(PnP)of each Econ aspect then you must know the VAST repercussion of each(PnP) to get a D on his weekly tests. Craven test = Multiple choice, 1 wrong answers, 2 right, 1 more right than the others. I took the class w/friend we both had the same % in the end me=B, he=D...?????
I remember back when I took this class, I hated how difficult the exams were. I was extremely furious about getting a B. There were rarely right answers on the tests, only best answers. However, having gone to a decent university after, I realized that almost all of the tests you take are similar to Craven's. In the end, his class helped out a lot
This teacher takes a lot of matters too personally. I do not recommend this teacher.
I attended Green River CC in 1986/87 and he was my favorite professor. I became an economics grad. I went on to WWU, then asked Mr Craven for a written recommendation to go on a foreign study program, he helped me a lot with that. I ended up getting an MA (7 years of univ study). Craven was one of the top 3 I profs I had.
He goes off on tangents and tells the same jokes and stories over and over again. The tests are hard, but there is no homework.
Prof Craven knows what he's talking about. If you wanna learn REAL economics take him, but if your light-hearted and easy to offend skip it, but if you want a taste of some wisdom and real world experiences take Craven. He's very nice and answers questions. DO NOT skip his classes and stay on his good side and youll leave overly satisfied.(ECON107)
If you can't handle the basic requirements of higher education, don't take Craven. I see a lot of whining here, and I'll bet you're the ones I saw in class texting all class long under the desk.He is very helpful to those who applied themselves. You can bring a sheet of notes for the tests(I did mine in 8 pt. type). Its up to you to learn it.
Simply one of the best teachers I've ever had. Went on to get a PhD in economics at a very prestigious school. He will teach you more about economics at an undergraduate level than anyone I know of.
Craven is one of the most memorable professors I ever had at Clark. He is an extremely intelligent man with quite an eventful life that colors both his personality and his teaching. Is a fair grader, teaches clearly, and showed me how to apply economics to the world around me.
Excellent professor! Definitely one of my favorite professors that I've had at Clark College.
Craven is one of a kind, and i wonder often what he thinks on many issues. He has a kind should, and indiscriminate way of presenting Econ ,yet his political views arise from passion, and smarts. One of Clarks finest, and highly recommended. Me...got an AA at Clark, 1996, with a certif in Business, 98 BA..WSUV.
Interesting man. Somewhat controversial. Sort of a renegade. I attended Clark College for a few years, and then transferred to UW. I've had a lot of good, great, bad, extremely bad professors, but Professor Craven was one of the most memorable. If you want to be enlightened, take his intro classes (that's if Clark College hasn't got rid of him.)
Mr. Craven is an unusual teacher, however, if you want to learn the subject he is excellent. I had him fall 2013 at Clark and after about 5 weeks in he disappeared. Clark fired him because of departmental politics. There was no notice to students and the sub i received was horrible. I regret spending tuition here to have inconsistent teaching.
James Craven was a wonderful teacher, and the way he disappeared was all too strange. I wish I would have had the pleasure of being taught by him all quarter, but it seemed as though bigger powers were at play. Unusual man with big opinions, but he knew how to get a message through, he was incredibly helpful and I was enjoying economics.
20 years after taking Economics from Jim Craven, I still recall what he taught and how he taught. He was a master at teaching cause and effect, and impacted his students with the charge to think about the effects of decision making in both the micro and macro sense.
