AHHHH WHAT DOES THIS MAN WANT!?? Is kind of rude in the way he talks to ppl. Very strange sense of humor which comes across as condesending. He is the rock god and we are just mortals in his game. He doesnt even seem like he wants ppl to take the
You will learn a lot- you have to. Plan on some late nights studying - try his coffee it will keep you awake for weeks. Long live Joey Geologist.
I agree that he was rude to people at times. But it didn't bother me, I guess I have thick skin. I thought he was hard but the most awesome geology teacher, our class aides were great too. Cullen and his aides did everything possible to help people succeed in this class. I loved this class.
you know this man is fine!
Hard Hard Hard, but it was so much fun.
He is very condensending to students and yells at you at the drop of the hat. Its a mix of passion and no patience, which I find you need for teaching. Tough tests, tons of homework. God help you if he is in a bad mood! He has a nice dog though that he sometimes brough to class!
He's very driven and challenging. He does snap but not without provocation. If you don't take it seriously you'll be the student he snaps at. If you study hard and are close to the top of your game he'll give you the shirt off his back. He's got high standards but if you meet them you'll do well
Took it in the summer a while ago & wasn't bad @ all. I thought it was easy & the labs weren't too bad. I got an A so I didn't think it was too hard. I never saw him snap. If I had any interest in the subject I would have taken more courses w/him.
I am not a geology major, and I found this class to be very difficult, BUT it was a good time. I tried very hard and only got a B, but I was happy about it. Professor Cullen pushed us very hard, but I still remember so much material from his class. I actually considered becoming a geology major (or possibly minor) after taking this class.
Cullen Rocks! No pun intended! LOL I only took geology b/c I had to and I thought it was going to be boring and stupid. Now I actually like geology, it was a fun class! Cullen makes the subject interesting for almost anyone!
I HATED this class like I hate the New York Yankees! I took this class my last semester of college he makes freshman feel like crap. . He thinks that he is THE ROCK GOD and if you don't know anything about rock or if you are just taking this class cause you have to DON'T take it with CULLEN!!! I did learn something in his class but as a pre-school teacher I don't use it today. He also told me he thought that I would not make a good teacher! Good LUCK if you have him in class!
KILL ME! I took geology and liked it so thought I would take another geo fer my sequence. I was in a class with all geology majors and he MADE me very aware that I was clueless compared to them. OBVIOUSLY! That's where he comes in, to HELP and teach ... but no. The class was so hard and his attitude made it that much worse. I agree completely abt the weird sense of humor. Sometimes sarcastic and other times just a complete prick. OH ... and DONT get sick .. unacceptable! DAMN!
the worst professor at ssc. he doesn't have any communication skills and he grades hard..
Prof. Cullen is demanding and expects alot of effort from his students. If you want an easy course take it with someone else. If you want to learn and aren't a slack ass then take it with him. You'll be glad you did. He can be ornery, but only to those who provoke him with their idiocy. Some say he is out of line, to those I say grow up.
Cullen grades REALLY hard on tests. He grades easy on assignments though. I had him while he suffered a heart attack (so he was out for 3 weeks). When he came back, he insisted we finish the complete prescribed workload. He's weird, sometimes he's in a good mood, sometimes he's totally ticked off. He's like having a second wife. AVOID IF POSS.
Not only is this man a miserable ****, but it also shows in the work he gives, the way he grades his tests, and his overall attitude toward students. Consistent browbeatings to kids who don't follow with the ridiculously high pace. Avoid at ALL costs.
Cullen = The drill sergeant of the Geology department. Although he wont tell you to drop and give him 20, he expects you to attend all classes and complete all assignments. If you are looking for an easy A, I’ll drop by just to see how fast he makes you cry. (And it has happened) Just, put in an effort and work hard, and he will work with you
drop this
Jim, is fantastic, and yes he made me cry several times...his tests made me forget my own name!!! His notes were a bear...but his study guides and tests are taken straight from the notes, and if you pay attention, and do te required homework...you will do fine. IF YOU THINK THIS IS "ROCKS FOR JOCKS" switch. I thank him profusely everytime I see him
I continue, I thank him every time I see him, for not only making me a great geologist, and I love paleontology now becauseof him!!! I think I am a better teacher, and student because of this man!!! Thanks Jim!!! Keep up the good work!!! Rocks for jocks...not at SSC!!! Class of 2001!!!
The worst class ever! it will leave your head spinning and after make you want to destroy the planet. This guy needs therapy and lots of it
Not a bad guy. If you follow along in class and do the required work its not so bad. The cry babies here are obviously not college mentality yet. He is helpful and I like "him being a pain in the ***" If you want an easy A go elsewhere, if you want to learn, take this class.
Extremely demanding, expects alot but those that apply themselves also learn alot. Is this not why you continue in college? He expects you to learn the material. Good for him.
Hard class, I advice taking with him only if you are a geology major. He gives u a hard time. A lot of work, you can't leave the lab until you finish your assigment. A lot of work! test very hard!
Prof Cullen is one of my favorite teachers thus far at Salem State. As long as you have a good interest in the subject and follow along you will do good. Hard tests but he is very helpful and is a real nice guy. For those of you who want to get and easy A do not take his class
Expect a lot from us... You have to dedicate most of your time to this class. He expect us to become an expert in geology.
This professor is by far one of the most pompous men I have ever met at SSC. He expects you to grasp a concept you haven't even learned yet and refuses to help out his students. I would recommend his class as an alternative to having a root canal...maybe.
I'm a few weeks into his class, and I am really wishing I had taken it with someone else. This man seems to relish the opportunity to make the lives of his students miserable. I've talked to him a couple times, he's a nice guy out of class. But his coursework is too demanding for a class where nobody is going to use it outside of the classroom.
Prof. Cullen is very demanding, but he is very helpful and wants to see his students succeed. Those who whine about this class are those who don't want to work for the grade. I've learned a lot in this class and I am sure it will help me become a better teacher. I recommend this class for anyone who is willing to work hard.
Do not take a class with him. Over half my class had to drop out, and out of the half that stayed very few passed.
Cullen is a very demanding professor, but you will learn more in his class than any other class in college. The man knows how to teach science exceptionally, but because he tends to teach GLS100 (a common class for non-majors) most students think they can just slide through. It's NOT a blowoff. He gives you everything you need to succeed... so STUDY
This was the worst class I've ever been in. The first day of class he said to us, "I will see at least half of you again, because you will not pass this course." I mean, what is that? The man is unprofessional, condescending and downright rude. Most student complaints are due to laziness or incompatibility, but this guy is ridiculous.
Professor Cullen is very demanding, but if you do what is asked of you, you will do well! He can be kind of a jerk in class, but is a nice guy one on one. He doesn't take attendance but you need to go to class if you want to pass his tests. He is willing to help you if you need it. I got a 66 on the first test, got some help and ended up with an A.
If you are not in Geology major DO NOT EVER TAKE THIS CLASS... This class nothinh but make your life miserable!!
****. ****. ****. he usese trick questions on tests and rearranges graphs and diagrams to fool people. he will also be upset if u don't have an absolute obsession with rocks. oh and don't take him as a senior he singled me all semester.
I had this class and got an Incomplete because I didn't do well on a final. I went to talk to him, and come to find out he gave me an "I" to make me go talk to him. He let me retake the class free of charge over the summer! Great guy.. RECOMMEND HIM. Just read and pay attention and don't skip class! This is not an easy A, though.
I had Jim for Physical and Historical geology a few years back. In class he once said,"You can get a Harvard education anywhere...its up to you to do the work." He challenged us to use our brains and I use what he taught me daily and his class made me a better teacher.I can't pass a road cut without noticing the strata. Thanks Jim... Scott S.

Prof. is not helpful & has no patience for students who don't understand material. Extremely dull & monotonous. Exams are extremely difficult & labs as well...
Incredibly difficult professor. His expectations are way too high.
Brilliant man, awesome geologist, should NOT be a teacher, in fact he shouldn't go anywhere near people who are trying to learn.
Dr. Cullen is one of the best professors I've had at Salem and one of the only science professors who doesn't label smart ed majors like me as dumb off the bat. Yes, he maintains the integrity of his field by keeping the class challenging. Welcome to college! Take this class for a well earned A/B, not an easy A. Go to North Shore for that.
Prof. Cullen was by far the WORST teacher I have ever had at Salem State. For a intro class, he expected all students to live and breath rocks. His notes, are all over the place. His tests, are all fill in the blank and are not worded even close to what you may have in your notes. STAY AWAY I warn you. I have a 3.57GPA and I had to drop this.
For the rating below, I meant Physical Geology.
Honestly I enjoyed taking his class.I was nervous at first because I heard that he was tough. It's true that sometimes you feel like you're not in an introductory course but the way he teaches the class is clear and extremely understandable. Great class and great teacher.GLS
This is not an easy class and I was surprised that I got an A in the end, but if you show him that you care and are trying, he will make sure you get where you need to be. Really loves what he does and is very knowledgable, taught me a ton. The exams are largely open ended and he is a perfectionist, but his lectures are well paced and clear: study!
I really miss Professor Cullen! It is not easy to pass his class, you have to pay attention to every word he said. I really learned a lot from his class. English is not my first language so it was kind of hard for me to follow, but he is very nice and helpful.I personally believe People who said he is demanding didn't even pay attention.
Cullen is one tough teacher. He doesn't take attendance but it would be wise not to miss his class. His quizzes are extremely tough and he asks vague questions. He has a condescending personality but he grew on me. Overall, if you can handle his workload and personality, he's a great teacher and you will learn a lot.
He is a tough teacher, don't get that wrong, but he is very passionate in his subject. He has a sarcastic attitude that needs to grow on you, but after you get used to that he is a great teacher. He is tough but you really do learn a lot from him.
Oh well.....if you don't have a habit of studying and I mean really studying and not just flipping through textbook pages, do yourself a favor and don't take this course. Or if you taking it now, drop it. Pr. Cullen is a brilliant Geologist but for crying out loud, he is a terrible teacher. Very confusing tests and designed to fail!
Do NOT take. Knows his stuff, but it is very clear unless you are a geology major he has no use for you. Can't control his temper, his moods are up and down, and doesn't really welcome questions. Do not miss any classes, you will regret it!
This was the hardest class I have ever taken at SSU and I feel like I learned the least in the end. He is one tough teacher with a condescending and sarcastic attitude. He knows his stuff undoubtedly, but unless you want to study every night AVOID him. Half the class fails every test, and he sees nothing wrong in his teaching method. Miserable.
Prof Cullen is a great teacher who really knows his stuff!!! YES this course is somewhat difficult BUT Prof Cullen has an awesome teaching style! If you really pay attention and ask questions during his lectures and labs you'll do fine. I bombed my first exam but did really great for the next 3 and the final thanks to him!
This guy is practically the devil incarnate he is by the far the rudest and most condescending teacher you could imagine I had to give up on this class because he was so horrible at teaching the material and being helpful that it was hopeless for me as somebody who struggles with tests please do yourself a favor and never take a class taught by him
Cullen is a smart guy. I like him as a person, but I'd never take one of his classes again. His class is the hardest class I've taken in my life. He says he doesn't take attendance, then freaks out when people are absent. He assigns more assignments than any of my other teachers. I'm halfway through the course, and I've learned nothing.
I have learned nothing. I will be withdrawing for the course, otherwise my 3.0+ will suffer.
It's clear that Prof. Cullen really enjoys Geology, however, it is also clear that he really does not enjoy teaching. He does not have any patients for clarifying when students do not understand. His tests are also VERY difficult. He loses his temper over things that you would not expect and yells at students.
Very hard, but you can learn something.
YES he is hard and I could not put anything lower than1 If I could it would have been -2 BUT!!! He will bend over backwards to help you. You will learn!!! I have two MS degrees now one in geography and the other in MSITM. MOST of my grad courses were not as difficult as his course. BUT again you will learn. If you really want an education take HIM!
Professor Cullen is a true professor. It's college, classes are supposed to be challenging. It was a good amount of work but it was fair. If I had not been so far into my degree I may have changed it to geology just based on this course. By far the most interesting course I've taken. He is also a nice guy if you respectfully put in the effort!
He's a tough teacher no doubt about. He yells a lot, and its either funny or intimidating; depends on who he's yelling at. He doesn't miss class ever, so don't expect him to cancel any. He's also the pickiest teacher I've ever had in my entire life. I write on the test what he said on notes, and he puts a giant question mark on it.
very difficult, you cannot just pass this class
This is just ridiculous! Folks, do a favor to yourself if you don't want to go crazy and find another class to satisfy your requirements. He assumes that we are his assistants and all we have to do is to know about every details of the geology! And you will not believe your eyes when you see how he is grading your papers! Absolutely insane class!
His lectures are clear but I can't stress enough you HAVE TO TAKE NOTES! You will not pass exams otherwise because he relies heavily on notes sometimes even word for word. His class is mostly based on exams because he rarely gives homework. He is really tough but a really nice guy.
Amazing guy! Great lecturer, but make sure you show up cause most of the test material is based off the lectures. Not a lot of homework to be done outside of class, so just make sure you pay attention in class and it shouldn't be difficult to get at LEAST a B, if not an A.
Jim is a great guy, but get ready to work. He will push you to your max and even further. If you do not want to work, DO NOT take the class. If you want to work hard and prove that you can excel in a class, take Jim, he is AWESOME
Jim is one of the best professors I've ever had. He has high expectations for his students and goes out of his way to help you succeed if you are struggling. Generally his tests are more difficult than what people are used to, so you might just have to work a little harder than normal to succeed. He is a fantastic lecturer; get ready to take notes.
He's exams are extremely hard. It expects us to know so much about about rocks. Be ready to take notes, the labs are not that hard but if your not understanding what he is teaching then your screwed. I don't recommend this class. I had to drop it because it was so difficult for me. He does not give out grade nor update on canvas what the grade are.
First impression- I hated him. He definitely grows on you tho. If you don't like science or you're looking for an easy gen ed, don't take this class. Taking notes is super important and the dynamic earth exams are pretty in depth, but if you're good at studying you'll be okay.
Prof. Cullen is fantastic -- get ready to work and actually earn your grade, and you'll learn a ton. He has a passion for the subject and will not just let you skate by since it's a 100 level course. Highly recommended to the serious student.
Jim is one of the first professors to ever hold me accountable for my mediocre effort. I earned a 26% on my first test in Historical. He made me want to learn geology. This is not rocks for jocks! You will have a deep understanding of the earth and its functions/feedbacks. I appreciate him not accepting my mediocrity, and pushing me to achieve.
He says that attendance is not mandatory but trust me it is. If you miss one assignment there are no makeup and you get an incomplete for the assignment. He is very sarcastic, and rude. He has no feeling for his students, how are you going to give us a 5 page assignment every Tuesday and expect it by Thursday along with a summary from the readings.
Do not take this class!! Thought it was going to be a great class Im dinosaurs makes it more complicated than they, hard grader, hard testes, rude most of the times and picks on his students. Wouldve dropped this class the first day if I knew he was like this doesnt tell you your grade as well.
Outside of class, Cullen is a great guy. He's really nice & truly does care about the progress of his students. But, in class, he alienates his students and makes you feel terrible. VERY test heavy. All tests, quizzes and exams were open note, but he was picky about what notes you could use. You'll use the textbook. Study hard & you'll pass.
I took age of dinosaurs. What a miserable experience. Nothing is on canvas, blames you for not submitting work when he doesn't collect it. Proud of low scores talked about geology class avg 64 and next class avg was a 70. Should be real proud of that. Maybe it's not your students it might be you and your teaching methodology. Steer clear.
I wish all Professors were like Cullen. He makes you realize that it's your responsibility to pass the course. Test are all short answers so make sure you take good notes, and never skip class. Just work hard and You'll pass. He is very accessible outside class. Best professor if you're into this!
Had this guy for dynamic earth a couple of years ago. Good teacher, knows his stuff, but has very poor temperament. Erupts in anger over the most trivial things. Has a superiority complex due to the fact that he knows everything about geology. Expects students to be geological experts by the end of the semester. Would never ever take him again.
Overall the worst professor I've ever had. He is generally a piece of work, He doesn't like laptop-taken notes, and That's the only way I take notes, as I know it works for me to understand and learn more. He alienates students when they aren't paying attention and wanted to check their phone for just one second. Screw you, Cullen. -B
Overall, he's a good guy outside the classroom. Inside the classroom he can be harsh and insulting. He is very passionate about his subject, and expects you to be too. Passing his class requires lots of time and effort. If you do not put in effort, he will likely call out for it publicly and you will fail.
Cullen is very judgmental and isnt very clear with his instructions most times. He seems to think we only have this one class which isnt the case and doesnt understand how difficult online learning can be.
He is very rude. He doesn't use canvas properly. He quizzes you on what you should know from intro courses. I've been told he doesn't like me but he acts like he doesn't like anyone. He thinks he's better than everyone. He doesn't explain topics clearly especially when it comes to math he just expects you too figure it out.
When a classmate asked clarifying questions, he had this rude tone, sounding like he was annoyed and barely answered their question. Based on how he taught(couldn't focus), I learned more through the textbook, so make sure you have it. Second exam, class average was 58. Maybe stop having unrealistic expectations and change your teaching methods.
If you're not a geologist expert before taking this class, don't even bother...
This class was ridiculously hard for a 100 level course. He grades very hard, provides no assistance, and will not answer your emails in a timely manner. He offers no extra credit or additional help. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. He needs to learn to teach in a way that is effective for all students because everyone I know in this class is struggling!
You can tell he cares/is a good guy. It was very easy to reschedule a test when I needed to. Inside class, he is aggressive at some points and easily aggravated. Expects you to be very passionate about geology and it is very difficult. Does not take attendance but will call you out. The other reviews are all true. Good Luck. Wouldn't recommend.
I think a lot of these ratings misrepresent him. He is aggressive but he's not mean, he's not aggressive because he thinks you're dumb but because he wants to push you to do better. If you're seeking an easy class to get a credit then don't take him but if you want to learn about geology and/or be challenged then he's your guy.
Absolutely horrible. I had to take Dynamic Earth as a requirement for my major. None of the graphs/diagrams he uses make any sense and nothing is clearly labeled. Its like a guessing game on homework/exams and then he grades so harshly. Like do a better job at putting your work together or find a different career
Extremely difficult for a 100 class. If you haven't taken a 200 or 300 level prior to the 100 level (Yes you read it correctly) then don't take the course with Professor Cullen. This class is more difficult than a quantum physics course and the amount of work you must put forth is ridiculous.
It's a stressful and toxic learning environment, to be honest. He begs us to ask questions and to not be afraid to get things wrong, then gets frustrated and answers in a condescending way when we do. Poor temper like others have said, explodes sometimes. Avoid Cullen if you can. It's hard to relax even when he is feeling nice. He's unhinged fr.
You guys in his intro courses are absolute babies. Stop tearing this guy apart for trying to engage his students and for expecting you to actually do the work. He will never fail you as long as you put in effort, just ask any geo major. Not liking him on a personal level is valid, but there's no professor I'd rather have in my corner than Jim.
If I could take every class with Jim I would. He is a very tough grader and there is a lot of work, but he is the most caring man on this campus. These reviews are inaccurate.Very passionate about geology.Don't take if youre not interested in it, take a different SR course if your major needs it.He gives students a hard time but just give it back!
He freaked out on a girl cause she had her phone out. When I say he freaked out, I mean he FREAKED out. With all his might, at the top of his lungs, he freaked the hell out.
Y'all intro course people are genuinely such babies. Jims a tough guy and he can be mean at some points, but that's because he's one of a few professors left that genuinely and truly gives a sh*t about what he's teaching. He cares so much and he wants you to learn, you just have to put in the effort. That's it. He's never failed anyone who did
At first this class was very difficult and overwhelming, but as the semester progressed it became easier, and I started to like him more. He's actually a nice guy and when you ask him questions to explain something more he will, and make sure that you understand it. He cares about academic accommodations as well.
GLS155 is a NIGHTMARE. Do not do it if you value a solid work-life balance. Cullen assigns 6+ homework assignments due every 3 days. Our first exam was due tonight at midnight, and he assigned 6 homeworks due yesterday, and 6 due on Wednesday, all completely irrelevant to the source material on the exam. I will not recommend GLS155 to anyone I know
Dont listen to the good ratings, I understand hes passionate about the topic but the workload is ridiculous. Good luck on the exams because they had nothing to do with the 10 other assignments for the week. This was inhumane for a 100 level class and he probably thinks this is his students' only class. STAY FAR AWAY! Would give negative rating!!!!!
I heard professor Cullen had a heart attack years and years ago. Interesting, I thought you had to have a heart in order to have one...
Hey Cullen, remember when you absolutely berated that young lady in front of the entire class back on the 1st day of 1st day of the 2017 spring semester for being on her phone instead of asking her to put it away like a normal human being? Pepperidge Farm remembers…
There was nothing in the test that was taught in the classes leading up to it. Terrible and condescending professor
professor cullen was great! i had him for an age of dinosaurs course. it was interesting, but there were so many notes. he allows you to use handouts and notes during exams which are a big chunk of your grade. as long as you take detailed notes, you'll be fine and he'll like you.
Professor Cullen's class is a challenge, but with dedication and using helpful study tools like Unstuckstudy, it can be managed. The workload is heavy, but engaging with the material and attending office hours can make a difference.
A lot of these reviews are clearly from people taking him as an elective. If you are NOT a geo major or a science major, I really advise you don't take him. If you have to, make sure you at least try. He is a man who really appreciates people who try. These reviews neglect that to mention TALKING, trying, and matching his energy gets you far.
My entire class has no idea what's going on. He writes the questions without reading them over (this is obvious). He posts assignments with like 7 PDFs to read and puts them out of order so you do the whole damn thing and then find you actually didn't because the last PDF is going to tell you you were supposed to do it all differently.
i admit to paying for chegg for this class because without it i literally would have lost my financial aid for the summer and would've failed. i could not have been more confused. i learned a lot about geology but understanding the actual assignments was an actual nightmare. do not take this class.
Says attendance isn't mandatory but will bully you if you don't show up. Condescending. Spoke to me like i was a child, he fails to realize his students are not high schoolers rather young adults. Announced to the class i was failing the course, when we had only taken one test in the semester and i had time to fix my grade. Do not take him.
What to do Donald Trump and professor Cullen have in common? They're both malignant narcissists! That's what!
