He is crazy, and annoying. And disrespectful towards the students...
the philosophy of film class is one of two classes that were worth taking in my

Amazing prof, brilliant but not condescending, my favourite prof at Ryerson.

IMHO, the best professor at Ryerson. His class was entertaining, as he likes to use use humour (sometimes crude) to grab your attention and get points across. He's also very flexible and helpful. I'd recommend taking any class he's teaching.
Honestly, the BEST teacher you can have. He is VERY nice to everyone, HILARIOUS, he makes funny voices to get you interested, he explains everything clearly, he's more than happy to discuss things with you in his office, his tests/exams are easy.
everybody loved him in my clss.
Just too funny! Every class was like going to the theatre.
He's a very nice teacher who is always willing to give help at any time, even if they're not his office hours.
hillarious and great prof
Solid prof., best i've had and likely one of the best at Ryerson. THOROUGHLY involved with each student's understanding of course material, great lecturer, very energetic in his delivery. Get into one of his classes if you can!
This prof is THE BEST, ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. He is clear, concise, and gets you involved. His lectures are better than any textbook, and he really wants your participation.
from the fanny pack to the dancing and the singing, this guy just can't be beat!
Way to much fun! Tends to make **** comments which can be off putting at first. Humor is way off centre but works. Worth taking at least one of his classes while you're her. Lots o' learnin' to be had.
An interesting facillitator with lots of energy. Class was kind of like going to a JustForLaughs show.
Hilarious guy! Seems like he's on chronic, but I guess it's just his style...
OMG I LOVE THIS GUY!!!!!!!!! He's AMAZING!!!!!!! You can't get profs like this anymore... Be GRATEFUL to get into one of his classes!! He's the greatest!!
OMG. How come my sweet James does not have a hot rating yet? He is hilarious, teaches the course material in a clear and easy to understand way. This is my second class with him (phl606). Definitely recommend all to enroll in one of his classes (phl606 course material was a bit more interesting)
This guy's energy levels are amazing. The best way to learn is through laughter and he keeps you in splits all the time. James, my man, don't get the wrong message but I think it sucks that a prof like you doesnt have a 'hot' rating, especially if a blockhead like caruana has one. So here you go.
One of the best profs I've ever had. Truly inspiring.
This man lights up the class. Clear and super helpful.
Mr. Cuningham you rock! People take any of his classes if you want to meet the best prof in the world!
His enthusiasm and passion for teaching is inspiring. It was pure delight to attend class which was fortunate as attendance was graded. Made me laugh and brought a smile to my face every time. He is my favourite professor.
Not one of the best profs at Ryerson, but THE BEST PROF AT RYERSON! His lectures are very effective and interesting and made the class a delight to attend. If you have a chance to take a course with him, jump at the chance, because he is the best of the best.
This guy was amazing. I wish i hadn't missed the shirt-ripping incident!
James was the most memorable prof ever. I always looked forward to his class just because he is so crazy (in a fun way) and really has a passion for what he does. He can be VERY random at times, but his class is always entertaining. He tries to make the material as easy to understand as possible.
SIMPLY WONDERFUL BOTH AS A PROF AND AS A HUMAN BEING. INCREDIBLY HELPFUL, AND FLEXIBLE, JAMES IS INSPIRING. HIS PASSION IS PALPABLE. HIS CLASSES ENGAGING AND ENTERTAINING. HE IS ONE OF THE BEST, AND I STRONGLY RECCOMEND HIM
This guy teaches with passion! Also has a great sense of humour!
best teacher i have had so far, funny, interesting, actually loves teaching his classes, i didn't want to take phl214 but he made it worth while and i am glad i did.
very eccentric and fun!

Good prof! He ate chalk in class to get someone's attention. He also washed the board with his sock. He's a philosopher... expect this kind of behaviour.
James is one professor you won't forget! He does ballet when cell phones go off and came to class with a barcode taped to his forehead (?). He also randomly performs opera and cleans the board with his sock. By our second class, he knew everyone's names, which means a lot and is a great teacher.
awesome! love him and he's more than fair and understanding.
James is AWESOME!
Jesus - what a lunatic. But damned if he doesn't know his stuff, and deliver it with unparalleled intensity and humor. And, yeah, he goes out of his way to be friendly. But he's not much of a prose writer.
He definetly is out there, but so awsome. I think it's one of the few classes in which I learned something without ever having to open a book... if u can take any courses with him do it ... he is awsome!!! oh and he wore a bathrobe for the 8AM final... he also loves Marx so have fun
Such an enthusiastic character! It's worthwhile attending his lectures b/c he clarifies the readings so essentailly you don't have to read! Very nice guy!
extremely fun personality. has a passion for teaching PHL. you wont be bored in the class...
HE IS THE BEST PROF IN RYERSON!!!!!!!!!
James is insane in a good way. Don't know if he's actually insane or just pretending haha. Doesn't matter. Take his class and be entertained!
Took three courses with this guy. He literally changed my life - what a teacher! Absolutely raving mad but in a supremely benevolent way. He is the one teacher who I will never forget.
He's a good teacher...and a good entertainer! He's a pretty lenient marker as well, teaches the class well and is really clear about everything.
Great enthusiasm...Problem is, you don't know what he wants on the exam. If you don't write what he wants, you're going to get a bad mark. Just understanding the concept is not good enough...being able to repeat verbatim is what he wants.
he scared a few of us at first with his crazy attitude (head banging against table, etc, and loudness) but then it was just funny, he stayed on topic, taught us eth a bit too thoroughly (which made it seem like the test may be harder/he maybe a hard marker but tests were straightforward n essays marked reasonably.n he makes sure eb's paying attent.
He is a wacky guy but you can't help but have a soft spot for him. YOU WILL NOT FALL ASLEEP IN THIS CLASS...for two reasons lol...a)he's the most entertaining guy alive..and b)he will make a fool of you if you do..and maybe take away marks, like he claims to do if you don't bring water to class :S...lol they raise electrolytes apparently..he's GRE
he was entertaining, but i thought he was exretemly ****, unclear and rude to the students. I feel his interactions with the students were unprofessional. his course was very hard to follow, with the lack of visual resources. i will do my best never to take a courese taught by him again
This prof. will positively change your views to the world. He is enthusiastic, clear and very helpful.Caution, you may find him to be weird, but he is very funny and always means well. Dr. Cunningham is a unique prof. and his classes are a must.
He is very weird... he wiped the board with his socks once!!! he told us to f*** off, lol, that was just awkward. I dropped the class later... so don't know what else to say. Ppl seem to like him though.... a bit... weirdness and all
It seems like he acts really loud and weird to get ppl's attention. Always pay attention in class and never let your mind drift away during class or he'll embarass you.
This Crit Thinking Course is worth taking with this prof. He has got to be on some sort of drug (which he jokingly admits, and i seriously believe) cause he is totally out there. Things he has done in class: 1) banged his head on the chalkboard covering his face in chalk 2) Literally chewed chalk and spit it out (the craziest s***)Take his class!
Genious!...Weird Insane but a genious. Makes class time very entertaining by chewing on chalk...singing...dancing etc... Not a sit back and sleep class be prepared to be involved. I would take anything he teaches.
Everything on posts below is true. Banging his head against the board was nuts. Early on class is tense, some people don't get on well with him. he can be abrasive and is a dictator, you must do what he says. he's a great guy but vulnerable. Class gets ugly if people dont play along. Short man issues. He pushes limits of what you can-can't say.
He is a wealth of knowledge. Take advantage of his style of teaching, it is condusive to good learning.
Quite simply....one of the most brilliant people i've ever met, and probably ever will meet. He challenges your mind and ways of thinking unlike any other professor...his teaching techniques are not straight from a manual, but that's what makes his class all the more effective. A prof who facitates the utopian classroom and learning experience.
Good teacher but weird. He can be hard to follow in his lectures. You MUST pay attention to lectures. He will pick on certain people. Bring lots of paper to class. Write many notes it will help you for the text/exam.
If you're expecting a challenging class, you may, at first, find yourself VERY frustrated. His "shows" can overtake the material; doesn't go in depth, repeats things a LOT; his expectation bar is very low. Teaches to the lowest common denominator. However, at the end, you will find that great philosophy has been crazily forced into your head.
Without a doubt, he is the craziest professor you will ever have and no one will truly believe your stories about him unless they've had him before. He can be overtly offensive sometimes and favours good looking blondes, but you'll still come out with a great mark if you pay attention because he's actually quite fair and easy.
An awsome guy,I took 2 cources with hin & he is absolutely AWSOME but kind of crazy and wierd!!!
He is a fantastic professor! He is passionate about teaching and philosophy, and regardless of how crazy he comes acorss, you learn. Just speak up, be intelligent and you will get alot out of this course! Wish I could take more of his classes...
He's a bit on the quirky side of things if you know what I mean. Yes, he sings, dances, walks around barefoot, crawls on the floor like a dog, and so on, but he is a great prof, and a great educator. He makes you sit for 3 hours, but its well worth it.
Funny
He calls business students ****s...but he is a nice enough guy. He loves to rearrange the chairs and tables in class, and takes almost 30 min doing so. and then he takes attendence which takes another 15 min. so really, just come to class after an hour. Easy B.
The guy is crazy: Run's around the class like he's riding a horse, sings, says hi to the class like we're all 3 years-old. Seems to have some deep-seated resentment for business people - good thing he teaches a business ethics class.. Get's high marks for helpfulness and clarity. He'd get a 5 if there was a 'craziness' rating. All that being said, he truly wants you to succeed.
A unique character! Passionate about what he teaches! Be prepared to have a rather interesting time in his class!
Finally! A cool professor! I found his teaching style to be very 'memorable' due to exciting 'repetition'. You need to show up to class though, a lot of the good information comes from lecture material, and the readings really are overwhelming without the prof's interpretations of them if you are not a philosphy buff. Classes are great though!
Wow i was really scared the first day of class from his style. I grew to love thim tho and so did the class. Its great to finaly have a prof. that isnt a total bore.
I find that his eccentric qualities, which so many seem to like, over the top and plain annoying. He makes people move just so he can be close to you (extremely awkward). If he doesn't like you, he'll continue making your life miserable for the rest of the term. He treats you like you were a little kid; if I wanted that I wouldn't be in university!
james will certainly keep your attention during the entire class and does a really great job of making you understand the readings. he keeps on repeating the same material over & over to make sure you understood it, which some might find abit too much. you also might find him very entertaining or not very classy & a little overwhelming.
Taken 214, 606 and 504 with James. GREAT prof! One of the best at Ryerson, deserved the prof award in 2006. Does crazy things to keep your attention, little do you know you'll remember exactly what philosopher he was talking about when he got up on top of your desk to say hi. Pay attention in class, take good notes and participate for a good mark.
Once, on break, he went to the bathroom, pulled a disabled person's handlebar out of the wall, came back to class, and played it like a horn. He related it back to exactly what he was teaching that day with clarity. It's things like that that make me super excited to go to his class!
He definitely knows how to keep classes interesting - walking on desks, playing with action figures/puppets... writing on the walls rather than the blackboards, kicking chairs, banging his head against the wall... yea, this class is good. & you'll understand the concepts when class is done. =)
Looking for words to try and describe him, but words seem to have no meaning when used for him, because he is a completely different level...Should've been a singer/actor/Dancer/Standup comedian/protestor/Prime Minister(That would be great:-)) but he does it all in his lectures...I'd say..his students are lucky to have him as their prof..GO JAMES!!
Crazy but awesome professor! He can be really funny and keeps students always interested. He does ask random students questions to keep you on your toes so you are forced to pay attention (which is a good thing).
At first I though I was dealing with yet another religious nutbar prof. However after a few classes he starts to become starting far more. It's true he has a very unorlidocs way of teaching ... but he really gets people to think about the path they have choosen.
He keeps you awake and entertained! Brilliant at teaching. His methods are unusual but they stick like glue. His exams are equivalent to his midterms and there is never additional material he did not go over on it. This is my 3rd class with him and he still amazes me. However, attendance is MANDATORY for crystal clear understanding =)
The most entertaining lecturer I have ever had, and also quite approachable. While some may not enjoy this style, I regard it as an extremely effective style of education. I would take a course I was not interested in just to have this professor again!
honestly absolutley AMAZING. made it worthwhile 2attend lectures. maintained everyones attention & was overall incredible. made u question & understand religion & the world. attendance is a must...TAKE HIM IF U CAN WHILE AT RYERSON.
Excellent prof. really helped me to explore my own personal religious beliefs which resulted in a greater self knowledge.
He is way too over the top and in your face. If you like a professor that treats you with dignity stay away.
AWESOME! he's definitely "in your face" but don't worry, it's not totally intimidating. he's just a very friendly guy and wants everyone to do well. he's not gonna go easy on you but he's just so clear with they topics he covers that if you show up to class and are alert you'll do absolutely phenomenal! DON'T FORGET TO BRING WATER!
BEST TEACHER IN THE WORLD
If you're not terribly bright, and perhaps majoring in marketing or business, you will adore this theatrical professor, as you are his target audience.
James is amazing. I wish I found him sooner. I try and make all my liberal with him. He is talented, engaging and very helpful. One of my favourite profs at Ryerson. Def my fav prof outside of my major
The most engaging professor I have ever had in my entire undergrad! His lectures are relevant, lively, and make you want to go to class.
James is by far one of the best professors that i have ever had. He is funny enthusiastic and makes sure everything is clear. if you go to class, and listen you will do well. He makes me want to keep coming to his class. it is more of a fun three hours of philosophy and comedy mixed rather than a 3 hour boring lecture.
I loved Edward Cunninghams Philosophy of Religion class, he was amazing, he stood on desks to get our attention, wore a pink pashmina just for shock value and cleaned the blackboard with his socks. He was into repetition to help us learn the material and he still says hi and smiles when he sees me. Awesome prof!
James was such a breath of fresh air in an education system full of monotony and a focus on textbooks. He is by far the best prof I've ever had in professional career as a student. Every student should find a reason to enjoy one of his classes.
The best professor by far at Ryerson University - take his class. I have to be honest, i used to look forward to his class, very funny, engaging, helpful and very knowledgeable about the topic that he is teaching. His class was so enjoyable - he made me want to love coming to school, very interesting person. im so taking another course with him.
THE BEST PROFESSOR EVERRRR and i mean itttt ....
He classes are fun and enlightening -- he's a great mix of incredible intelligence and good humour. He has a real passion for teaching and he likes to get to know his students. He can make dry topics into fun and interesting ones, and he can really make complex information more understandable. I definitely urge you to take a class with him!
He's super knowledgeable in all aspects+ passionate about what he teaches, with great sense of humor and ease. It's fun to go to his class. He's crystal clear about what he wants for assignments and is willing to help you out after class for any questions and concerns. I will not hesitate to take few other courses with him. Love his class!!!!!
He is the BEST prof I've ever had! He repeats himself, which isn't a bad thing since most of the things he does say is going to be on the exam. Take any course with him if you can!
Energetic, enthusiastic prof! one of the best at Ryerson. Knowledgeable in all aspects especially jurisprudence and English monarchies. loved speaking with him and being in his class. it is such a thrill to learn from him!!
Simply amazing. He knows everyone by their first name. He is extremely passionate about teaching and is totally committed to getting the students to understand the different concepts.
Awesome prof! Few things to watch out for, he drifts between playful and serious a lot, and he'll ram his head into the chalkboard, so bring a camera. Otherwise, no complaints.
Simply the best, such an amazing professor! really gets the whole class engaged in the discussion and makes sure everyone is on the same page. May seem like a silly guy but really he's a gem and a very intelligent man. Makes class feel like fun by getting us to sing songs too! Totally awesome prof, definitely would take another course with him!
Teaches most philosophy courses. AMAZING prof! Had him 3 times already, looking forward to a 4th. Funny, goofy, and realistic. Only prof I can actually call a friend. No-brainer, take his course. It'll be the most fulfilling part of your university experience, guaranteed! Warning: he gets in your face and seems awkward. It's all in good fun
Oh James, I miss you SO MUCH!
Most inspirational professor in my life, I learned more from one class with him than 4 years of business courses combine.
Great prof! Repeats the things you need to know (in a good way) and he doesnt just lecture AT you, its a class discussion. I will look for him again!
Helps you the the best of his ability. Easy, clear, keeps your attention, fun, and you actually learn!
My favourite prof yet! Engaging funny and personable. A casual kind of guy. But when he gets in lecture mode its like Bam! Bam! Bam! He just tells philosophy like it is a narrative. His lectures just flow so nicely. He doesnt hesitate to identify the "dancing bears".
Existentialism was the second course I had taken with James. Originally, I was slightly confused about him.. But, after the second time around, it has become abundantly clear: James is a fantastic lecturer and such a sweet man! Love him!
He will make any course interesting and engaging. Wants students to learn and will do anything to get the message across ie. bang his head on the wall, jump onto desks. Not only will you remember him but he will remember you. I strongly recommend him!
AWESOME PROF.
My most memorable professor. Never a dull moment with this guy.
Although a difficult marker, James is a well of knowledge that every student should encounter. He breaks every convention in his teaching methods and leaves you unforgettable advices. Come with an open mind, and James will not only guide you in critical thinking or methods of reading and doing Philosophy; he will guide you to see the world.
This prof is like nothing I've ever seen. His teaching abilities are second to none. I learned a great deal from this man. Only downside is that he is a tuff marker and is not lenient at all. That being said, his teaching abilities make up for it. A brilliant man indeed!
Took him in my first year at university and was shocked. Not only is he an awesome prof but he's extremely talented in knowing how to get across core concepts and makes sure students understand them. Assignments were super easy because of his clarity. You got to attend every class if you can because class is note-based (assignments are based on you
This professor has a passion for what he teaches like I've never seen before. I've never taken a philosophy class before and his teaching methods helped get every point across. Definately recommend taking a philosophy course with Cunningham.
Unbelievable teacher. I have had many philosophy professors and he is by far the best I've had. He does expect a lot from students but he very clearly and effectively gives you the material and means to achieve this high level of work. He is very passionate about what he teaches and his enthusiasm is contageous. I wish every prof could be this good
This guy is the ultimate!!
Yep he's a great prof. Knows everyone in the class by their name and wants you to feel comfortable with your classmates. Overall very intelligent and nice guy.
The best prof I've encountered so far in my 2 years at Rye. Keeps you engaged and keeps class interesting. I'm not a philosophy major and I absolutely loved this class. If you need to take a lower level liberal, PHL 214 with Cunningham is awesome. Great prof, fair course. Put in the work, get the mark.
I took philosophy of religion with him last year. If you are in this class, DO NOT BUY THE COURSE READER. Its a complete waste of 50$ and I didnt open it once. His lectures are enough to get an A as long as you take lots of notes and pay attention. Attendance is a must. Cunningham was extremely entertaining and I enjoyed the class
Took PHL of religion, beyond the western academic tradition & ancient greek philosophy. He taught me about life. This professor is irreplacable.
look, hes a great prof. he's interesting, and really friendly. he keeps it fund. BUT he is a hard marker.AND in the end, he feels his opinion is always right.
LOVE HIM.
Brilliant man, amazingly interesting lecturer. I'll never forget him and our morning sing-alongs before class.
Very very hard marker. Openly mocks and insults business students. Makes the whole class sing dumb songs. Talks to students like they're in kindergarten. Jumps on tables, and throws chairs against walls. Course reader is a complete waste of $50, but you need it in order to cite quotes for one essay. Will not take him again.
He's the perfect professor. Everything he says, including the course syllabus review is mind blowing and he's super funny and all the movies he shows are awesome and I only did one reading but got a good mark, not because he's an easy marker but because he's really helpful.
Absolutely brilliant. Takes very complex ideas and helps us understand through exemplary stories. He is completely ridiculous in his tactics but, they keep you interested and entertained. I plan to choose my courses based on what he is teaching.
Explains course content very well, and he is really helpful if you have any questions. He tends to stop the class if you come in late or leave the classroom during the lecture.
Such a good teacher! really entertaining! Bought the books and rarely used them she explained the content so well make it so clear! Attendance is mandatory but it you don't wanna miss his class! Really loves his students and gets to know them by name!
THE BEST TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD! I have already taken six courses with him, and I plan to take as many as humanly possible. Thanks to Cunningham, I have chosen to major in Philosophy.
Had a rollercoaster, first liked, then really annoyed felt patronizing, then lukewarm, then really enjoyed, by the end Cunningham won over. At first his lecture's seemed unclear, but there is method to his madness and his antics became enjoyable and even welcome.
He is an amazing teacher. He gets to know you personally, and he mezmorizes you with his awesome stories.
Great enthusiasm! Informative and approachable.
He is amazing, he is the best ever , made me understand philosophy like a story , i really find him the best , he is so humourous . Makes hard things as easy as possible , very clear for his exams and his essays
He is the best professor , he is awesome , he explains in a very amazing way that sticks in your head, hes a good marker, i wish him all the luck in his life
Best professor ever. Highly knowledgeable, amazing sense of humor, it is impossible not to like him....
Crazy fantastic teaching style!
Have been in several of James' classes. He is one of the best. He inspires his students to learn through the enthusiasm and passion he exhibits in class. His lectures must be attended but they are great experiences. Condenses material, explains it clearly, and makes it relevant to the students. He is not easy. He is fair. A's are achievable.
Very entertaining. He's hilarious and very nice to students. However there is no structure to the class however. He always went off topic during lectures. I wasn't very keen on his teaching style. But if you prefer taking notes without powerpoint slides/guidelines, then he's the prof for you.
Hilarious prof, I had never taken a philosophy course before but this was literally my favourite course in my university career so far. Very passionate about what he teaches, it's almost impossible not to listen to him, and he loves answering your questions. Also he's constantly making jokes (about either the material or the students)
AMAZING PROF! Incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about the material. He makes the course very interesting and engaging! Knows what he is doing
James is my fav! I've taken 2 of his courses and am changing my electives so that they are all for his classes!! He is such a great teacher and person and isnt afraid to speak his mind which makes him so amazing! He'll make fun of you openly but he does it to everybody so don't take offence!! One day in his class and you'll be in love!
Amazing professor! He's passionate and makes every class worth while! Im happy we have such great professor at Ryerson! life changing!
Amazing would definitely take a course with him again.
Amazing teaching technique, and very interesting and inspiring approach to the subject. He has a high sense of humour and his energy and passion for teaching are incredible. I really loved his classes and was looking forward to them every week.
As overused as it is, i wish universities were filled with professors such as Cunningham. What a great person to listen to and be taught by. No only did he teach the material at hand, but he always went beyond the surface and tried to open up our minds to different things. I learned a lot more than philosophy in his class. There's no one like him.
By far one of the BEST profs are Ryerson! I am yet to find a professor that is so incredibly intelligent and engaging. Definitely knows his material. I've taken 2 classes with him and it has been life changing.
The Best.
He is very charming and humorous. He exemplifies a passion for teaching and his energy is contagious. One of a kind and you should take his class to have the experience. Experience points all the way. Hard marker, but he makes up for it in all other ways. Take his class and stick through with him until he grows on you as an inspirational person!
This prof is the only one I remember from when I I was in Ryerson over eight years ago seriously lmao i even remembered his first name thats how amazing he is and hes funny as hell and didnt make me not want to go to class at all. Every week he made at least one of my lectures brighter. Cunningham FTW!!
This professor stands out to me from my time at Ryerson as one who made me feel humiliated, picked on, and stupid everytime I was in his class. I eventually stopped going and just showed up to the exam. He wasted time daily rearranging the desks and picking on students in order to embarrass and mock them. Should have made a formal complaint.
