In the beginning it seems like its just memorization, but soon after, you'll see how throws in random things from the book. And those who read the book (which 99% of the class don't) get those questions right, while the other students get it wrong.

Very kind, fair, and focused, but not necessarily easy. If you show up to class and do the web exercises (extra credit) you shouldn't have any problems. This class really enriched my understanding of the natural world, though I didn't expect to enjoy it. If you just want an easy grade, look elsewhere.

Dr. Lawrey was very nice and his exams were actually very easy if you know some one with practice exams or go online and find them and review yourself and draw the tree and be able to recite it without looking at it. For lab he was very lenient as well, nice professor. Not a stressful class

I enjoyed his lab because he was laid-back and wasn't a harsh grader. Quizzes came from slides and from recitation activities. Make sure to study pictures and microscope slides for practicals.

Dr. Lawrey is a very nice professor! If you have previous practice exams, then use them! They're very helpful! Grade is based on three exams total, and he gives you one makeup exam to replace one of the first two exams! I recommend him as your biodiversity teacher!

Boring lecture. Monotone voice. Posts powerpoints. MUST memorize almost everything and trees. No study guide. Previous exams are helpful to understand the format of his questions. Basically have to be able to do it on your own. Make flash cards, google some quizlets! I assumed he was nice. He was rude and condescending through e-mail.

He is very monotone which made the lectures hard to bare. He's very knowledgeable of what he is saying though. Take good notes cause you have to remember everything. Glad it switch to online during COIVD because then it became open notes. Take good notes and flashcards or you're screwed for the exams.

This course is based on memorizing a lot of things and the tree. To pass his exams, draw the tree while studying as much as you can. Review your notes as much as possible. But quizzes are open notes and easy. Doesn't give study guides but he holds review sessions with practice questions to study with. Attend these reviews, it'll you help a lot.

This class is tough, but he's the most knowledgeable professor you'll have and really wants you to succeed. Quizlet is your best friend and make sure you draw trees over and over again to learn them. Attend his reviews because his exams follow the same format, and are very reasonable. Open note quizzes are easy.

As long as you take the time to really study and basically memorize everything on the PowerPoints, then you'll do well. Quizzes are open note and easy. I took the time to compile all the questions in review sessions, and before exams I used those to test myself and it helped me gauge what I needed to work on. Basically, study hard and you'll be ok.

His teaching style is not bad. He hold a review session after each chapter which helped a lot in studying. Quizzes (10%) were okay. 3 exams(30% each) were hard and you have to memorize mostly everything from the slides in order to do well. He will curve if the average of lecture+lab is lower than 75% but dont rely on that and study hard.

The class is content-heavy, and his lectures are absolutely boring. I took the async version and it was physically painful to watch his lectures because of his extremely monotone voice. Exams were hard! However, his policies are fair & he dropped our lowest exam and lowest quizzes. Still, I would not recommend him.

Dr. Lawrey was an amazing professor that was extremely straightforward in his exams. He provided us with old test questions in his review sessions that were on our exams. There were also some questions from the quiz that was also on our exam. If you take good notes, watch the lectures, and go to the review sessions you will do fine

Terrible and rude Professor who'll get angry at you for asking questions bc he claims we should understand everything by listening to his 5 year old lectures. His review sessions aren't worth it. You only have 3 exams that're heavy in content and he won't tell u what to focus on. Other professors are better than him. Not sure why he still teaches.

Would not recommend! Take any other professor if you can. His lectures are so long and monotone. Whenever someone asked a question or asked for clarification, he would make them figure it out instead of giving them the answer. No HW thankfully but that means the exams compromise your lecture grade. Allows one retake exam though.

WARNING DO NOT TAKE HIM AT ALL COSTS. I have NEVER written bad reviews but had to write this. An A is hardly obtainable in this class. Very unprofessional, unempathetic, and unmotivating teacher. Unsure of how he still teaches at GMU and why he chose this career when he DOES NOT CARE for his students. Would give 0/5 if that was possible.

Professor Lawrey is an okay professor. He doesn't do lectures rather you study the PowerPoints yourself and he then reviews certain parts of them. Don't wait till the last minute to study because it's alot of material. 3 exams only and 15 quizzes (dropped the lowest 5 and offers a retake for one of the exams). 25% lab.

Do not take him, GMU should give his job to someone who would be more intrested with helping students. His lecture are from 1-3 hours long and his voice is so boring and unintrested in what he is teaching. If you could get someone else to do it for your own sake. HE IS THE WORST. Posts 2 hour long lectures on canvas which you have to view before attending the zoom sessions. if you don't try to learn anything outside the class, you'll fail. You won't learn anything from him so you have to teach yourself mostly which is hard if you have other classes. Don't take
