didn't seem very interested in helping anyone learn anything and was constantly putting down the other professors in the department

He is not a nice guy. In lecture he will act peppy, but he is really mean and cynical towards students. I once made the mistake of asking him a question- he didn't answer it and made me feel stupid. He also leads you in the wrong direction for tests. Half of the stuff you go over in class won't be on there.

Be warned, Dr. Davis does not teach well. Spends a week on one problem, miss quotes, and yells at you when you ask questions. He also thinks that getting a C is "good" because he got one in his freshman course! Your grade comes from your 4 exams + some bonus pts. Constantly changes teaching/testing style. Pre-med students avoid him @ all costs!!!

He does not relate to the students in any way!! does not answer emails!!

If you like your GPA, do NOT take Davis. His class is ridiculous. He'll tell you what to study for his quizzes and then he'll go and put the complete opposite on the quiz, and what he told you to study won't even be on there at all. I was blind sighted EVERY..SINGLE..TEST!!!!! and I am an A student, and i'm struggling to make a C.

Study for the quiz. Lecture is useless to go to because he rants and gets off subject constantly. I taught myself from the book. Quizzes are super easy it's straight from the practice problems from the book. Super rude so don't ask questions if you decide to go to lecture.

Avoid him if you can! No test, only quizzes once a week. Only test is the final. His lectures are long and boring. I do not feel i learned much from this class.

Well I had him for 131 and we had a quiz each week which was easy to stay up to beat, but in 132 he only gave two test before the national final.. No extra credit was given and throughout the semester over 65% of our class was failing. He doesn't give much help. It was rough not even knowing your grades before the drop date. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!

Would highly recommend anyone to FIND ANOTHER professor!! I'll admit if the class is just hard (which it is) but... he taught horrible! I had to retake it with another professor and passed just fine with a B.

his class was easy. If you just read and do the practice problems in the book, then it's pretty easy to teach yourself. he just isnt the friendliest person to talk to

He puts his classes in alphabetical seating. I am at the end of the alphabet and couldn't see anything on the board. Front seat people wouldn't come to class but he wouldn't let you sit there. He did not prepare us for the ACS final exam. Mini quizzes are 2-3 questions. Miss one and you have a 50. Prepare to teach yourself everything.

the ratings here about how he gives daily quizzes and homework, etc etc doesnt apply anymore!! it's 3 tests per semester. they're really hard and they have trick questions. no homework/quizzes/extra credit to boost your grade. gets off topic TOO MUCH, he moves so much slower than the other chem prof. There is only 3 test and a final. One drop grade. Test only have 12 to 20 questions. No room for mistakes. He does not lecture well at all. Gets off topic a lot. No homework for extra practice. No extra credit. He do not scale. Its do or die for this class. DO NOT TAKE JAMES DAVIS IF YOU WANT TO PASS CH 132!

He is a terrible teacher. Literally the average for his finals was a 54%! He does not teach well at all! He stops teaching class and goes off on tangents that have nothing to do with the class. DO NOT TAKE DAVIS. You will not pass and if you do it will drop your GPA.

He makes mistakes on the test and counts it against you. No one has made a 100 on any of his tests his average is 54 for his final. DONT TAKE YOU WILL FAIL!!!!!!

The final was impossible. The class average was a 54 with a high off 88 with no scale in a class of about 150. Going to class wasn't helpful, other than looking at the slides to see what would be on the test so you can study it in the book. Didn't really make himself available outside of class either. Just wasnt very interested in helping students

I have never worked so hard for a class in my life. I had to teach myself all 9 chapters because he went off topic all the time. Only grades are 3 tests and the final. The tests are impossible and no matter how hard I studied I would never make an A. The final was open book and the average was a 54. Don't take Davis, your GPA will go down the drain

DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. All he does is read over slides that are already available online, and tell you to read the book. We only had 3 exams and a final so if you are struggling in the class there is really no way to make up for it. Final was open book and I still managed to do bad if that tells you anything. Would not recommend taking him.

I would never take this professor again He tells stories throughout lectures which cover material straight from the book. I took that class to learn about chemistry, not how to make a pound cake or what shows he likes to watch or how certain sayings have come about today. If you'd like to teach yourself, take Davis, otherwise, take a different prof

I definitely wouldn't recommend taking this professor. He gets off-topic quite a bit and so falls behind schedule. So this means he'll rush through the final chapters. All his tests are now open book but class averages are still really bad because the tests are hard and take a long time. All grades are tests so if you do bad on two you're done.

I would never take him again. He is rude, disrespectful, mean, and an altogether horrible person. I just took my first test (out of three we take all semester), and I could not focus because he yelled at students throughout the test and kept making people leave for small things such as having a crumpled slice of paper in your book. He is terrible.

Worst teacher I have had in my life. On exam day he kicks at least 10 people out for really silly things. I don't know when this man will understand. His class is such a joke. He definitely wants people to fail. Don't ever sign up for his class it's a waste of money. Waste of time and money.

This is a really easy course to. I already know it but man is he a terrible professor. They need to get rid of professors like these. Don't take this professor unless you already know chemistry.

He's really a bad professor he kicked many students out of the testing area because of their coats :) really doesn't care about students future and never mind about anyone I highly doesn't recommend to take his class I don't know whats wrong with him.

The worst prof I have ever had at South he kicks out many students while they are testing! cuz of silly things his lecture isn't helpful there are 3 complicated tests one of them dropped with 40% Final exam. DO NOT TAKE JAMES DAVIS unless you want to get a C or lower.

Davis is not a good professor to take if you need to understand the material. He does not give homework or quizzes, you only get 3 exams and sometimes he doesn't even grade all three exams. Do NOT take him.

I would highly suggest avoiding James Davis at all costs. I took for two semesters (CH131 and 132), and I learned near nothing from him. He goes off on tangents during lecture and is vague on most all of his points. His tests are never alike so half of studying for his exams is trying to figure out which pieces to study.

His lectures are very fun to listen to, since they often have nothing to do with chemistry (he goes on many tangents). We were given only 3 tests throughout the semester and he dropped one. His tests were easy and open book so if you can use the book, you're fine. He gave a ton of extra credit points on some tests. But overall, he is a bad teacher.

Do not take Jim Davis if you suffer from any form of anxiety (social, test, etc). He is not approachable. Doesnt answer emails frequently. He claims everything is easy, you should be getting this, over half the class dropped. Do not take him if you struggle with testing & need homework grades. Doesnt use Sapling. Assigns a lot of reading.

I took Dr. Davis for CH 131 and did ok in there. So, I decided to take him for CH 132, and that was a big mistake. He changed the whole criteria of the class. We didn't have scheduled exams for 132, but instead had miniexams. The miniexams were tough. He would come into class and give us an exam and would give us 20 minutes to take it, then leave.

Dr. Davis expects you to just get it, It's a chem 1 class and he acts like we should know EVERYTHING if you ask him to go over stuff he makes you feel/look stupid. He does NOT do a good job at explaining things. If you don't put the exact answer including units or whatever you get the whole problem wrong! NEVER TAKE HIM HE SHOULD NOT BE A TEACHER!!

This is the absolute WORST teacher I've ever taken. He is not very nice at all, and his class is built upon "micro exams" that are actual test grades but you never know when they are going to happen and the material he tells you in class is not whats on the surprise exams. I once asked him to go over something I was confused about and he refused.

Taking this class is very stressful if you get test anxiety. He's very strict about small things, like having a calculator, etc. Office hours don't help with him. He gives micro-exams, and they're on random information. I wouldn't recommend taking him to ANYONE! On one microexam the answer was 2.5, and we all put 5/2 and he counted us all wrong.

Only does a quiz or two a week for the whole semester and a final so it is very difficult to get a good grade if you miss classes where he gives out quizzes. You must be able to teach yourself from the textbook because he gives quizzes on things he never touches on in lecture.

He is the worst professor I have ever had. He is extremely rude, extremely unfair, and he literally does not care. There are three exams and one final. No quizzes or homework to balance your grade. He will test you on random facts that he gives during class that are not even related to the chapter. No partial credit and marks wrong for spelling.

Terrible terrible terrible!! He doesnt care if you fail, he basically wants you to fail. Only 3 test and a final is your grades in the class. If you ask for help hes going to give you a smart answer and make you feel dumb. Lectures are he just talks and tells you to write down whats important. Actually the worst teacher ever. I go to every class, go to tutoring, and do all the practice problems yet Im still failing. Ive gone to his office hours and he makes me feel dumb and tells me its common sense pretty sure the only reason why he teaches is because he got a huge grant last year for research.

DO NOT TAKE HIM. If you are not willing to put in 2 hours of chemistry every day. Do not go. There are only 3 tests and if you fail one, you fail the class. He is not helpful and does not offer extra credit. His class started with 80 students and is down to 30 this semester because so many people have dropped. Even my advisor talked bad about him.

He does not care at all if you fail or pass. You can do everything in your power to do well and this includes studying, tutoring, or whatever else you can try but he does not care. He covers the bare minimum in his lectures and tells you to learn the rest at home. You are responsible for EVERYTHING in the chapters. If you need a good GPA avoid him.

Please do not do this to your GPA. It was overall a bad experience. He is an extremely tough grader and does not care about how hard you are trying.

We had 3 exams and a final exam(the only grades given). He lectures from the book, and doesn't use PowerPoint or sakai other than grades and syllabus. No attendance policy, but did give a one point bonus question in class(once). If you take him, I advise you remember everything he states in class because anything he say will and can be on the exams

Does not care if students pass or fail. Don't know why he is even a teacher. He is awful. Would not recommend anyone take him for chemistry.

Expects you to know organic concepts even tho this is gen chem. Midterm was easy but the final was completely different from anything we did in class. I enjoyed his class until the final.

Terrible professor. He does not care if you pass. Never responded to any of my emails. Goes on many tangents that have nothing to do with the material, but still tests on all the material even if it wasn't covered. Asks questions beyond the scope of general chemistry into organic chemistry. Third time taking gen chem 2 and I scraped by with a D.

He told us he was tired and bored of teaching. The only reason he still is teaching is because he is one of the top (if not the #1) researchers at South. Very smart, but will not put in the effort to help students succeed.

Honestly the worst professor I've ever had. He does not care if you pass and often talks about unrelated topics in class. He is snarky when students ask questions and asks like some questions are dumb when we don't understand the material. The material covered was well over general chemistry. Tests barely relate to the material covered in class.

Terrible teacher, really really rude, not considerate or understanding at all. Also, if there's a typo on his test and you point it out, he'll get offended because "doctors don't make typos"

He is awful, makes you feel stupid for asking a question, goes off topic very often thinking it relates to the topic but never does. He is a very specific teacher that doesnt care if you pass or not. Find someone else.

I took his class during the semester of the corona virus and his lectures online were actually much better than his in class lectures. If you need a teacher that you can ask questions to and be reasonable with, do not take this class. He takes a very long time to reply to emails and also is very short and rude when (and if) he responds.

He always changes testing style year to year and has some of the most grade grievances filed for a professor. take stenson and put in the extra work. davis is a gamble that typically won't work in your favor.

absolutely awful. Not sure if it's bc of COVID, but he has barely given out any assignments. Does not use Canvas at all and does everything over email. Degrading to students, shuts you down if you have questions, might as well teach yourself. Attendance wasn't necessary while online, not sure about in person lectures.

Dr. James does not teach well. You MUST have your textbook and you will read a lot. He gives no homework, which is not a good thing because then you do not get practice for the exams. The only grades he puts into canvas are exam grades. Do not take him!!

Avoid at all costs. We got 4 exams and a final with one drop grade, and although exams were open book, that didn't help much. DO NOT MISS CLASS UNLESS YOU REALLY TRUST SOMEONE TO TAKE NOTES FOR YOU. He doesn't go over test questions despite horrible exam grades (lowest in the 20s) and spends half the class talking about personal anecdotes.

By far the absolute worst professor I have taken here at South. Truly could care less about his student's success. Dr. Davis is impossible to communicate with and takes forever to reply to his emails. His class is hard! He only put five grades in Canvas the entire semester (one drop grade makes it four). Truthfully dreaded going to his class.

My experience with Dr. Davis has been my worst with any professor to date. Not only is he rude and bad at communication, you can also tell he genuinely does not care about the class. We had no homework or quizzes, and the lectures were more of a story time. If you value your mental health and time, avoid at all costs.

Professor Davis is probably the rudest professor I have ever encountered. You honestly could do better not showing up to class and just reading the textbook and attending recitation. Recitation is the only lifesaver for that class. His lectures are irrelevant and not helpful. Best advice I can give: take a different professor.

Stay far away. I am not a slouch of a student I put in hours of studying and work and my grades have shown for it. This man is extremely hard and unorganized, his tests are small with items you barely covered during lecture. His final was super small and covered a topic he taught 10 min at the most of on the last day of class. He is a disaster.

Final was based of something he lectured on for 30 min on last lecture day. 4 exams and 1 final, drops lowest exam score. Do not take him.

Davis has been behind schedule all semester which affects the lab course. The grades are 4 tests, 1 hw weekly, & final. The hw does not follow to the lectures because he is so behind (harder homework since you haven't been taught the material yet). Davis is unorganized & comes to the class before the test & tells us he hasn't made the test yet.

Loves to talk about his personal life instead of chemistry. His exams are very few questions and are weirdly worded. The homework is so far ahead in the book compared to the lecture which makes it more difficult to do. And 70% of the homework does not even get talked about in class. But to be straight to the point, don't take him

Professor Davis puts forth little effort when it comes to these classes. He doesn't do classwork or in class examples, instead giving the homework which is chapters ahead of the material he's reading in class and on tests. The lectures are him just reading the slideshows verbatim everyday. He's very lazy and if you meet with him, he's quite rude.

By far the worst professor i have ever taken. i ended up having to ask my lab instructor and my resitation for help with my chemistry. he does no teach what so ever and gets mad when you are being "distracting".I was working on HIS homework in the very back of the room and he screamed at us to stop being distracting and to pay attention. DONT TAKE!

He doesn't teach from the slides, DOES NOT teach us what's going to be on the exams, and spends more of class teaching about pound cake recipes and random history facts than he does teaching chemistry. If you have a background in chemistry from highschool then you should be okay taking his class. If not, RUN
