willing to clarify anything, exams are straight from the notes - buying the book isn't worth it, and he tells you that on day one. gives a comprehensive review guide. injects some humor into the class making 8am less painful.
This teacher is out for your best interests, and he is a nice guy and knowledgeable. However he is definitely overrated, his lectures are boring and slowed down, and tests are not too bad but incorporate trivial facts. Also he does curve...i would only take this class if you like dev. psych. a lot.
Dixson is great. His only flaw is that he teaches right off a powerpoint, which can get a little tedious and boring after a while. But hes an extremely nice guy that wants everyone to do well. He gives nice curves, his exams are easy and hes extremely approachable. Although its off powerpoint, you still learn a whole lot.
This class was simple on the material. You start off doing well, then comes the exams. The exams are poorly written and irrelevant to the material and include trivia facts which has no real academic substance. I got a horrible final grade back, and considering i never wanted to take the class in the first place, it made this class even worse.
Teaches right off powerpoint slides. The material is interesting sometimes, but can get pretty dry, especially at 8 am. His tests aren't bad, and everything comes directly from lecture. He'll tell you right off the bat that the book isn't necessary if you plan on coming to class. Overall, pretty nice guy, class could be more interesting though.
This teacher is out for ur best interest. He is very incosiderate! His exams are really difficult and do not buy the textbook because it is NOT worth it. Do not take him if you love your GPA!

this teacher is really unfair. he only likes people who do well. he has no consideration towards people who are struggling. he should simply be fired...
Just go to class and study the notes. He was pretty witty. I loved this class!
Nice guy overall. Don't need the textbook for his class to do well. Had a hard time staying awake at 8am sometimes, as he reads right off his powerpoints. But if you come to class and take notes, you can easily do well. His exams aren't simple, but he also curves when necessary.
He doesn't post the slides online so you have to go to class to get them. He may be really boring but everything makes perfect sense and if it doesn't, he is more than willing to explain. His exams are straightforward and if you aren't dumb as a rock you will do FINE on them. The book is completely unnecessary so don't buy it. Take his class!!!
Can be funny, class isnt completely boring. He doesnt post the slides so you either need to go to class or read the book. If you go to class all the time, you do not need the book. Exams are ok. He curves so its nice
He really is a great professor; he tries to keep things funny and has a pretty good sense of humor. He does not post the slides, so you either have to go to class or read the text... I would opt you go to class, because it really isn't that boring, and the material is interesting, and he teaches it well. Definitely recommend!
Dixon is a really great guy. He is funny and keeps the class interesting so it's not hard to sit through. The class overall was pretty easy too. I recommend taking it, it's an easy 4 credit class to bring your GPA up.
This was a fun class. He made it interesting even when the material was a little dry. Just go to the classes and pay attention and you'll do fine. He's also a really nice guy so if you have any questions don't hesitate to ask. His exams are easy too, just go over what he covered in lecture and you're in the clear
great professor! he kept the class entertaining and was funny. you have to go to class because he doesn't post the slides online but you never need to read the book because his exams are entirely off his lectures. also, if you review the notes after class the exams are pretty easy- always multiple choice. take this class!!
great guy overall. his lectures are pretty funny. tests are fairly easy. would recommend taking his classes.
Awesome guy. As long as you go to lecture, you'll be fine on his super easy tests. He's very personable and casual.
Its really frustrating how he doesn't put slides online.. attendance is mandatory so if you miss a class you are screwed. Asks test questions about minute insignificant details in notes. Pretty boring class overall
Dixon tries to be funny in lecture, but his class is a waste of time.He doesn't care about his students at all and his exams are based on(I still don't know). The slides help, but he makes you know the book even though he never tells you what he will actually test you on.Even if you got a 5 on your AP exam, you wont do well on tests.
Don't listen to the previous post. Dr. D. is a wonderful professor. He clearly tells you what is expected of you and his exams are no where near difficult; AS LONG AS YOU STUDY LIKE YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO. Exams come primarily from his notes which he doesn't post so attendance is mandatory, but c'mon, you're in college, go to class. Take it with him!
I don't know why some people are saying the exams were hard. They are the easiest exams I have taken yet at this school. I don't even OWN the book and I pulled 90's on every one. Just go to class and copy the powerpoints. He goes so slow and is so boring that there's really no excuse to not have all the notes written down by the time he moves on.
You definitely have to come to his class, as he does not post slides online and changes what he covers, seemingly on a whim. His tests are generally fair enough, though.
best teacher ive had at uconn so far. as long as you go to each class and take notes you will get an a in this class. he made it interesting and very easy to learn
Wonderful Professor. You have to go to every class to get notes and examples because he uses specific class exaples on the exams. If you want a A on the exams you have to read but knowing just the notes well will get you a high B. If you do what he says you'll get an A. No tricks, straight forward exams. Over all, wonderful course.
One of my favorite professors at UConn. His lectures were so clear and easy to understand. About 95% of the test material came from lecture notes and videos which were not posted online (must attend class). Only very few questions came from the assigned book readings.
Very straighforward and nice. Lectures are helpful and are not put online.
Great professor. Really interesting. Exams are sort of difficult. Averages are in the 70's. He does not post notes online, so you have to go to class.
Dixon is a really nice guy. Funny too. He doesn't post slides online so attendance is mandatory if you want to do well. His exams aren't the easiest, but if you study the notes really well you should be able to pull a B.
Dixon is a nice guy, and the class is simple enough. He goes extremely slow through slides, so note taking is simple, and he doesn't post anything online so go to class. Tests are fair.
really cool guy. the class is interesting and the exams are pretty easy.
MUST GO TO CLASS! His notes are similar over the years so if you know someone who was in the class before you the concepts are the same. Don't over think the exams and memorize every small detail from the lecture slides and you'll be fine.
Dixon has really changed the way he structures his class (so be mindful of that when reading older reviews). There are 2 exams and 1 final, none of which are cumulative. He has starting using Aplia for online homework. Overall, DIxon is a great guy and really cares for his students. I missed lecture but still did really well. MUST TAKE!
Dixon is an above-average lecturer. He is very clear and helpful to students. There are 3 non-cumulative exams as well as weekly online homework. He also posts slides online now. Discussion isn't too helpful and there are 3 short papers to write, but it makes the class an easy 4 credits. The class itself is interesting; I recommend it.
Prof. Dixon was okay, his class wasn't really that hard, discussion was very easy, and there wasn't much work. Some questions on exams came out of no where, but for the most part questions came right from lecture, usually emailed back. Not the best professor, but definitely not the worst.
Exams are a little tough but not too bad. His lectures are pretty interesting. I found this class to be pretty easy and I rarely did /all/ of the readings. Discussion wasn't bad, I was in honors and there were 3, 3 page papers.
Prof. Dixon made the exams for this course way too difficult for an intro to psych class. I got an A in psych 1000 and i'm scraping to get a B+ now. You have to know material from the book AND lectures inside and out for exams. Avoid if you can, other professors are easier
You definitely have to go to lecture because his slides are just basic bullet points with no explanations of anything - but it's okay because he's funny and a good lecturer. Exams can be kinda tough, I understand the comments below def. harder than psyc 1000 - you just have to read the book.
Don't listen to the people saying his exams are hard, I hardly studied and did well. If you go to class, take good notes and read them over/ know vocab you'll be totally prepared. He gives his note outlines online but they're useless for exams so make sure to go to lecture!
Dixon is an average professor and can be kind of boring at times. The class is based heavily on exams (2 of them are worth 75%), and there is no final. You can get a good grade but you have to put in a lot of effort for studying.
Very average and often comes off as dry and boring. Tries very hard to be funny and relatable, to which I give him credit. Must attend lectures and read the textbook, because his slides are very vague. Really peeved that he refuses to answer questions over email, and his exams were ridiculous. Extra credit in class and in lab is a big plus.
He's FINE, not spectacular, but he is very educated on the subject and willing to help. Only annoying thing was that exams were weighted so much each 36% but he gives extra credit. Not my fav class but it was alright. Definitely take him for 1100, heard he's a lot better than other professors
Professor Dixon was completley monotone during lecture. The psych labs for this course had no correlation to class. The only grades you have are your exams and lab and research study count for a total of 15%. The extra credit barely helps you on exams and he never curves.
His exams were challenging. You definitely need to read the textbook and go to lecture to pass his exams.
Dixon has good energy, but held back by a "learn and forget" 2 exam system. They are 70% of your grade which each have 50 multiple choice questions. The questions include trivial info that you'll likely forget immediately after you take them, especially since they aren't cumulative. Possessing understanding isn't rewarded, simply factoids.
Didn't go to class more than three times. Got a B-. Two ONLINE exams that add up to 70% of your grade. 25% is in the discussion class, which is mandatory attendance. Then 5% for research studies. There is some extra credit, too. Dixon is pretty boring. But if you don't feel like listening to him just don't show up, you'll be okay.
Defintely need to go to class and take notes on lecture and textbook to do well but other than this dixon is very fair and straightforward. lecture can be boring but you get through it.
Dixon is the nicest guy ever. But you dont need to go to class at all. He posts the notes, and the exams are online, so heres what you should do: copy all the words from the powerpoints into a doc and fix any formatting errors. When you take the exams, just search through the doc and youll get an A.
Dixon isn't the best professor I've ever had but not the worst. His tests are online but are unnecessarily difficult even if you F5 through your lecture notes AND the textbook you still won't find the answers. Tests are so specific and are 50 Q's each. I got a 5 on the AP version and to be honest it was little help. two midterms are 70% together.
Overall a great lecturer and nice guy. His exams are online and are made to be extra difficult to make up for that and prevent cheating. Your lecture grade is composed of two exams. That's it. With the exams being so tough and as he calls it "google-proof", I strongly suggest studying slides and the book. ALSO, DO THE EXTRA CREDIT!
He is a bit dry but the information is all there and he goes over it clearly. He had great video lectures during COVID which was awesome. He made some jokes and was a nice guy. Lots of information and powerpoints but its do-able.
Dixon's lectures can be boring, but I always found the concepts to be well explained. Doesn't use email, but prefers in person meetings instead. Plenty of extra credit opportunities, enough to bring you up a letter grade. Grade is basically determined by two tests, so don't screw up, just make a notes sheet to Ctrl+F through it. No hw, short labs.
I took the summer version of his course. The class was mapped out on what chapters you needed to read for each day. He had recorded lectures and some were more enjoyable than others. He was passionate about the topics and really tried to help you understand them. The textbook was free and online which was nice. He gives extra credit too.
Exam's are bizarre, abstract information that you most likely won't know. He gives you 1 minute per question on exams also. Watched all the lectures and read the chapters and still struggled on the exams.
I took this class Spring 2021 online. The lectures are pre-recorded on youtube. He is a very boring lecturer (I watched videos on 2.5x speed), but the content is easy. Tests pull from lectures and readings but aren't bad. I'm an upperclassman who took AP psych in HS so this was kinda a review and pretty boring to me.
Your entire grade is essentially the exam, research, and your lab section. You do more work in the labs, but that is manageable also. He uses the OpenStax Psych textbook and his lectures are pre-recorded on YouTube and are very quiet, but fine. Very little communication with students, and a repeat of AP Psych.
70% of your grade is 2 open note exams (non-cumulative). They test on small details and rely on the textbook and his lecture slides. If you want to succeed: 1) don't neglect the textbook and 2) write his slides down word-for-word. The other 30% of your grade is lab (25%) and research (5%). The lectures were rather dry, but I enjoyed the textbook.
This was the worst grade I've gotten in a UConn intro level class by far. He did not know how to use HuskyCT and sometimes the lectures didn't even align with the reading. This class was a lot more science-based than I thought it would be too.
Lectures are somewhat interesting. Class is mainly based on 2 exams that are open note, but need to know very small details from lecture. Go to every lecture and type down everything, also take notes from the book/vocab.
Professor Dixon class is very engaging. I liked his class you just have to pay attention and take good notes to pass. The 2 exams for the class was open note so that was a good thing.
This class is graded on 2 exams. That being said, it can be hard to get an A if you are not a good test taker even though this is a really easy class. If you take good notes you should Ace the exams because they are online, but nothing is on google so if you don't write down every little things he says you might not do well. Funny guy. Enthusiastic
just like AP Psych. Dixon is an interesting lecturer and the content of this class is not difficult, especially if you've taken AP psych in high school. There are 2 exams, open note, not on lockdown, super simple. Pay attention and watch the lectures, that's about all you need to do to get an A.
James is a good professor overall, but he is very average. His lectures can be dry sometimes, but he tries to put videos in that are interesting. Otherwise the class is very reliant on your midterm and final exam making up 70% of your grade. The midterm and final exam had very different content on them and very different levels of difficulty.
Professor Dixon seems like a nice guy, but lecture is so boring and lab is useless and doesn't align with lecture. Only two exams, lab, research, and extra credit make up your grade so don't skip doing something. Exams are open note and take home but you can't go back after you finish a question which sucks.
The tests suck (only 1m per question and no backtracking) but the lab is easy. However, some of the research you do in said lab will take hours upon hours, even though the TA (or at least mine) went very easy on grading. Do the extra credit studies, I screwed up and procrastinated so I only got 1 point but doing all would've gotten me a straight A.
Lockdown in person exams. Content overly specific. Boring lectures.
This class was overall not difficult to understand however there were only 2 exams which amounted for 80% of the final grade. The exams were closed note, with lockdown browser. They were heavily based on the reading, which he fails to mention throughout the course of the lectures. The only extra credit offered is 5 points towards the second exam.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS 2 exams are 80% of your whole grade, lockdown browser and in-person with TAs monitoring you. 20% of grade is lab. Lab is fine, it's the tests and lectures that are challenging.
The entire class is two tests, and very little of the test content is lecture-based. Exams are lockdown browser closed note travesties. If you need to go to grad school after this and need a gen-ed. Take literally anything else.
Professor Dixon is a very nice guy, but the structure of his class is aimed for students to fail. The class is graded off of 2 exams that are each worth 40% of your grade. The exams are extremely hard and focus on the smallest details from lecture. He says that you should read an online textbook, but none of the information in it is utilized.
Honestly, he's like a nice guy, but unfortunately 80% of your grade is from 2 exams worth 40% each, both closed note on lockdown browser, in class. I did bad on the first exam and it pretty much screwed me out of getting a good grade even if I were to ace every single other portion of this class.
Horrible lecturer, 80% of final grade is tests, no homework, the discussion section is literally a separate class with separate content, he doesn't curve till the end just to make you go crazy for no reason. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS
Designed for students to fail. Two massive exams encompass the entire grade and are both based on memorization.
Absolutely DO NOT take this class. I went in excited for learning about psych, but he definitely ruined that for me. I was so excited because there is no final, but the class is only based on 2 exams worth 80% of your grade. Exams are in person, on lockdown, and closed note. They are nothing like the practice exams, and just super random questions.
DO NOT TAKE IF YOU LIKE PSYCH- this class will make you hate it! For a prof who teachers a lot about memory and learning, it is ironic that our grade (80%) is almost entirely based upon our ability to recall ambiguous, random information scattered from lectures and textbook information. It is clear that he doesn't actually care about learning!
I'm sorry, but this class is not worth it. take it with any other professor. you don't understand anything. Lectures won't help. you have to teach yourself. then, you have to be able to apply your own self-teaching. the TA lead labs are useless and don't have anything to do with class. run.
I took this professor bc I needed to fulfill credit and to not do psychology ever again. His exams are just cramming information that I have already forgotten now, where he just tells us to memorize it all. ALL. The lab was fine but the lecture :/ He changed the class since last year apparently and it only got worse. Do the extra credit.
I am a new Psych major and I could not comprehend this class. Your grade is based off 2 exams which are both 40%, lab is 15%, extra credit of 5 points, with a research component of 5%. Didn't give a definitive answer when someone asked what to study for the exam but told us to study the terms. DON'T TAKE THIS IF YOU HAVE A BAD MEMORY.
Do not take this class. The grade is based off of just 2 exams worth 80% of the grade. If you ask him for clarification about the exam, he will not tell you. All he does and tell you to make flashcards on pages and pages of content. He will not narrow down the material and the exams are extremely challenging. He is no help. Save your money/time.
I took this class to fill a gen ed requirement and took it with Dixon because he had good reviews before BUT DO NOT TAKE WITH HIM! He changed his exams to in person on lockdown (so many tech issues). Two exams make up 80% of your grade which is insane. You are better off taking this with someone else.
No actual work ever. Bulk of the grade is two exams. Going to lecture helps, but the slides are posted and easy enough to use on your own. Don't forget to do the research requirement, and extra studies gets you extra credit!!
Pretty much no actual work. But studying does help since 80% of the final grade is based on two exam scores. Lectures are not very engaging and not super required to go to since the lecture slides and video recordings are always available.
Dixon is a sweet guy and very accessible outside the classroom, but his class is difficult to pass. The quizzes are only worth one point and the exams make up the rest of your grade. No one in my lecture section passed our first exam and the extra credit we were offered brought our score up by 5 measly points.
This is probably the worst class I have ever taken in my life. IF YOU ARE A BAD TEST TAKER DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. 80% of our grade is based off of 3 exams which are basically impossible to study for because it is so information heavy with no clear concepts on what to study for on the exam. I am going to cry tears of happiness if I pass with a C.
Records lecture so you dont rlly have to go. No homework but quizzes once in awhile. Exams are hard even if you study. He puts questions that we literally never mentioned in class. But gives extra credit points
This class was horrible. His exams were formatted where it's on lockdown and you can't go back to previous questions. The exams were mainly based on the textbook and he fails to tell you that. He also doesn't provide any sort of study guide so you're left having to cram a ton of info. Stay away, find another professor for your sanity.
Good prof, boring lectures. No final exam which is nice, but all the work you do is exams so you need to do well on them
Worst guy ever. Didn't give the extra credit even though I did the work, students got cheated of extra credit. He was rude, very unhelpful, would kick people out of his lecture, 3 tests and they were worth 22%, 26% and 28%, no homework however, which actually would have helped. No final. Very rough though, would not take ever again.
he is extremely monotone and boring and dumps large amounts of information on you for an intro class. No study guides, no outside resources. Exams are lockdown browser, in person, and one question at a time. How cruel!!!
Basically a biology class as well as psychology. 75% of the grade depends on 3 exams, terrible grading structure. No final is nice though. Lab section is a complete waste time. You have to study alot if you want to do good on exams.
He is not understanding at all- I had tech difficulties during an exam and he didnt care, didnt extend time, didnt allow em to retake it another time, didnt respond to my emails, etc... He doesnt care much about his students and is just very hard. The class is especially hard because most of the grade depends on if youre a strong test taker.
Took this as a gen ed. Passed intro to psych in high school with an A+. Went to every single lecture, took notes on every slide, read the book, and still did not score over a 70 on any of the exams. The exams are nothing like the lectures, and barely similar to the books. Office hours were not helpful and the entire grade depends on the exams.
He is a good lecturer and gives good examples to help you understand. He gives booster points for up to 5% points on each exam and one for the semester which can bring you up 3% to your total grade.
Professor Dixon is very hard to pay attention to in lecture. I would have a hard time of knowing what to study and with the class being so test heavy it was very difficult. I would not take him again.
Lectures can be dull, but the exams are the real challenge. Textbook is essential, but study guides are lacking. Unstuck ai helped me stay on track when the material got tough.
Had him for into psyc. The material was presented in a pretty monotone manner and would be somewhat hard to follow. The exams relied mostly on memorizing terminology, which some may struggle with.
