Jim is an awesome teacher. I hate public speaking, but I walked away from the class wanting to take more speech classes just so I could have him again as a professor. I had so much fun every single class! I respect this guy so much. Take his class!

Prides himself on being a hard teacher, which is what you want if you expect an education from your education. He also goes through great effort to ensure the classroom is a comfortable setting, and everyone ends up becoming friends. Just do what you're asked and make the improvements he suggests and you'll do fine.

Jim was the best! Made a class that everyone dreads fun. Classes are always very laid back. Work hard on and PRACTICE the 4 speeches and he'll recognize it. Never used the book except for midterm/final but the ?s are pretty much from it word for word so it helps to have, I would buy it or study it in the library.

Good teacher but like nay teacher has rules. you follow them youll do fine overall he is a pretty damn good speech teacher.

If you actually want to learn and succeed in speeches I would definitely recommend Mr Dobson! He not only wants everyone to pass his class but he makes the class sessions enjoyable with his awesome sense of humor! He is also very reasonable and does a fantastic job at clarifying what he looks for in speeches and how to do them properly.TAKE HIM!

Mr Dobson is a funny guy with a real passion for public speaking . Some of the tests are challenging but alll from the book. He finds ways to help you integrate with everyone in the class while still making it fun as well. IF you want to be taught by a passionate teacher and maybe have some fun on the way TAKE THIS CLASS!

Jim is a great teacher. He is hilarious. loves to crack jokes. he really teaches you to become a better public speaker. as long as you follow his advice and keep improving you will do great. he is one of those teacher where you are not wasting your money you really learn something

At first I was nervous about taking this class, but he creates an environment where everybody is supportive. Jim is funny and the information you receive from him will be relevant for the rest of my life. His information will even help you with projects in other classes. I highly recommend Jim if you really want to become a better speaker.

Absolutely great professor. I learned a lot from him. He makes the class interesting and fun. He get's straight to the point and he doesn't make things difficult. He's very understanding and he knows how to teach. DEFINITELY recommend him. He's really cool. Just participate. He doesn't like slackers. Read and review. He's really good.

Professor Dobson does a great job creating a friendly environment so you can feel more comfortable giving your speeches. There are four total. The first two are pretty easy because they are your own story. The final two are worth a lot more points and are definitely more challeging requiring research, an outline and sources cited during speech.

If your scared of public speaking this is the class! Lectures were never boring, cracks jokes throughout the lectures makes them easy to get through. All you gotta do is show up and do your speech at your best and you'll pass.

Mr. Dobson was an awesome teacher! I was really worried about taking a speech class because I have slight anxiety when talking in front of people, but the things he did to have the class bond and how chill Dobson was made it really easy. Mr Dobson is hilarious too! If you want a class that's funny and makes you want to go, take a class with him

Had a pretty normal amount of stage fright when I started but at the end I found that I've improved by a whole lot. He's hilarious and makes sure the atmosphere is always positive. Take the speeches seriously and you'll be fine. Text book really only used for midterm and final.

Dobson was a pretty cool speech teacher, a little tough . He will adequately prepare you for each nerve racking speech. He allows a lot of room to give speeches you want. I believe there's only 2 test the entire semester and 4 speeches total. The rest is listening to his lectures (entertaining) and small-group discussion. Definitely recommend.

He is very straightforward with his class and easy. Just listen to his instructions, do the homework, and you'll pass his class just fine. He's also absolutely hilarious and keeps the class very fun and entertained by playing a couple games while you are also learning. Although my class was at 8 in summer semester, he made it worth it.

Dobson is a really good teacher. He is passionate about his class. I have always been really shy and insecure, but he made me realized that I'm able to do good in public speaking. He also taught us the importance of public speaking, and how it can make a difference in your professional life. Follow his instructions and you will be good.

Dobson is very passionate about what he does. He gives great lectures & really does a good job of teaching the material. Attendance is important in this class, especially on speech days. He does a great job of giving feedback on all speeches-everything is very specific & lets you know what you do well & what you need to improve. Enjoyed the class!

Dobson has some really engaging lectures, he relates the topics to real life stories. You have to do some reading from the textbook for midterms and finals, but most of the rest of the class is preparing speeches and Dobson is glad to give input and advice along the way. Great class would take it again. 10/10

James' lectures are entertaining and interesting, he's a funny guy and likes to engage with students more. Early in the class you will have to memorize everyone's name which was very helpful, it gets you to socialize and brings ease into your speeches. REMEMBER to buy formal clothing if you do not have one yet. I got more confident taking the class

He is a very awesome teacher and care a lot about the success of his students. He has everyone learn eachothers names and it helps everyone get to know eachother and by the end of the semester, everyone was really close. He is very engaging and he bring a lot of humor to the class. I would definitely take his class again if I had the chance.

He's a good professor.

He is a tough grader but, not many professors can point our your flaws to help you improve. Along with helping you face your fears with public speaking, he teaches you about the importance of being a professional speaker, with tools like using reliable research, and creating credibility in what you are presenting about.

This class should be recommended for all students despite their major requirements. Jim gave great feedback and constructive criticism. He is happy to help explain and let you know what needs to be improved on for future speeches. His grading isn't too bad but he expects improvement. He is very knowledgeable and wants to help his students.

No one likes public speaking, but Dobson takes the edge off and makes it fun. His lectures are filled with comedy. Must show up to class to pass and you need your textbook, especially for the tests. He gives great feedback on your speeches and will work with you if you have issues. He wants everyone to pass and makes it clear. Great teacher!

Dobson makes the class entertaining and genuinely wants to see his students succeed. 4 speeches total and you have to dress up which I dont mind. Hes kind and jokes around but manages to be efficient and pushes his students to be effective public speakers. If I werent taking 17 units in the Spring, I would have taken his Interpersonal Comm. class!

Intimidating but awesome professor. 4speeches total, have to dress up during performance. Came into class and forgot I have to perform, have to beg to let me do the next day, hardly agree but he allow me with 25pt-grade deduction over 100, ouch! Thought that was too much. GoodNews: I got better every speech I do. Extra credits. Highly recommended!

Mr. Dobson is a great professor who teaches his subject very well. In his Communication Skills Course, you will learn everything that is needed to know about public speaking. Not only do I feel more condident about giving speeches in class, I feel as if I have learned skills that will one day help me in the work place!

Mr. Dobson is a good guy, very funny. He's one of those dudes that just knows how to talk. This year was different due to COVID-19, but that didnt stop sir Dobson. His content and material is normal speech stuff but his personality and teaching style make it fun. He's a silver tongued devil. He's got the skills and most definitely pays the bills.

Overall he is a great teacher. He gives you a great feedback to make you into a better writer for the paper assignments he gives. I must say since I've taken this class my communication has gotten better in the professional world and my writing has gotten better.

This professor provided an excellent class atmosphere which encouraged both growth as individuals as well as in public speaking ability. I would recommend this class to anyone who genuinely wants to improve their speaking ability and is willing to put time into doing so. What you put into this class you will get out.

I was unsure how taking this course on line would be however, It was way better then what I expected. Mr. Dobson was amazing. He was very helpful and the assignments were geared toward things that were relevant towards my interests. Mr. Dobson was very helpful, supportive and he gave great feedback. Professor Dobson is a great teacher and I highly recommend taking his class. He does assign a decent amount of work however, he gives a lot of guidance along the way. He is very clear and concise regarding assignments and always gives constructive feedback. He is also quick to respond to emails and he truly cares about his student's success.

Was such a great teacher. This was my first online course which made me nervous, but with his help I was able to achieve. He gives great feed back on speeches and explains ways to better in public speaking. Homework and quizs are very straight forward. Professor is very good at responding to emails as well. Very reliable and nice.

Professor Dobson was an amazing Professor. For it all being online due to COVID, he was very easy to get ahold of. Make sure to go to all of your classes and always prepare well for your speeches. Just give it your best. I really enjoyed taking his class for a summer class.

Mr. Dobson has an incredible teaching style mixed with humor that keeps you intrigued throughout the course. Attendance is mandatory, as well as cameras for the online course. His feedback is very beneficial so use that to your advantage. Best advice: Practice, practice practice your speeches.

This professor really wants you to succeed. He gives really detailed comments on your writing assignments and fully expects you to improve. He's also a really nice and understanding guy and takes time to work with you. You do need the textbook for this class.

I have never been a fan of public speaking, but honestly he made it really fun. I really enjoyed the module videos he put together, they were so unexpected! Most professors just post voice memos or power point presentations. I can tell that he actually enjoys teaching and putting effort into it. He made this subject fun, I would recommend it!

Dobson is a wonderful professor that is passionate about interpersonal communication. I have learned a lot! I took this course entirely in person, and it was amazing! He is a great public speaker and kept me engaged the entire 3 hours of lecture. We get to write papers based on movies we watched in class. Choose Dobson you will not regret it!

Professor Jim is very helpful and professional. He's the best professor i ever had. I learned a lot from his class. I took professor James Dobson's class as a requirement for my theater arts major. All assignments have plenty of time to complete and clearly have a reason to do them as they force you to understand the studies of that module for your upcoming speeches. He gives great feedback in a really kind way to help you out. Do your work and you'll pass!

He is an easy-going person and super friendly. His lectures transcend beyond the classroom as you will see that he uses real-life scenarios and examples to help you understand how to use public speaking skills effectively and concisely. He gives you as many opportunities to pass this class as long as you show that you care and try.

A comical personality that adds color to his lectures. In your speeches, he's picky & expects a lot. However, I appreciate that he's brutally honest and gives constructive criticism when needed. He's a strict grader & isn't forgiving on deadlines at all, so if you're a slacker, he isn't for you. Also, don't expect a perfect score on your speeches.

Professor Dobson is an interesting dude. He injects his online lecture videos with humor, which may not be everyone's cup of tea, but I appreciate the fact that he's clearly passionate about what he does. He's a good teacher who clearly cares, but he's definitely an overly strict grader and will always find something wrong with whatever you submit.

I took this class for summer and even though we had a shorter time, I was able to improve a lot and came to not be afraid of public speaking! Professor Dobson was a great professor to have. I took his CMST 1 class over the summer, and while it was a lot of work, it was to be expected because it was a 5 week class. But, when I needed help, he responded to my emails quickly. His grading criteria is very straightforward and he provides lots of great feedback. I would definitely recommend!

I am so lucky I got Jim as my teacher for public speaking! He is welcoming and makes sure everyone gets to know each other within the first two weeks of school. He is a tough critic/grader but it's just because he wants to give the best feedback to help on future speeches. There are 4 speeches you need to prepare thoroughly for. I would take again!

Professor Dobson made Interpersonal Communication exciting! The film papers deepened my love for movies, and the group project improved my teamwork and conflict resolution skills. His clear, engaging lectures and real life examples made everything relatable. I learned so much about communication and relationships. Highly recommend Dobson's class!

Before you register for CMST1, be aware that he requires business formal outfits for when you perform your speeches. Apart from that, he's very deliberate with what he teaches, and discusses exactly what he wants to see in your speeches. His feedback is REALLY helpful post-speech. The textbook is a good aid, but only necessary for the exams.

I enjoyed taking this class. The lectures were very informative and not boring at all. We had two speeches at the beginning of the semester, and two speeches at the end that were basically our final. Jim will really work with you so that you can do great on speech days. More than enough time to memorize your speeches. I highly recommend this class.

Jim is a very good teacher makes assiments clear and easy just show up to the class because participation matters and being on time and showing up too. While he is a fair grader he can be tough but just wants your best. His style of teacher is also straight forward and to the point makes this class a joy plus offers extra credit too.

This class isn't hard. Yes, there may be work, but it doesn't take up the whole day. It's really easy and he's chill.

Speech class was really excellent. You can tell he knows what he's talking about, and the lectures were very helpful. You do have to show up for class and put in the work, but isn't that what college is? I enjoyed being in the class, it was a good atmosphere.

He's a fun guy and really takes the time to get to know everyone in his class to ensure that we can be open with him when making our speeches. He gives plenty of time for assignments and works with you to get them done. Make sure you do what he says as he wants to make you as prepared as possible to give a speech in the real world and for class.

Prof. Dobson makes the class interesting, interactive and fun. For the midterms and final, he also tells us beforehand what topics are going to be on the exam. Jim also gives in-depth feedback for each of the speeches, which is also very helpful.

This class was truly a great learning and growing experience. Mr. Dobson gives such helpful advice to improve public speaking skills. This class did also have me face fears with public speaking but at the end I felt such a relief and proud of myself for doing it. Mr Dobson is a super chill guy and has the best lecture videos to keep you engaged.
