Awsome, funny, teacher who makes everything really clear and as easy as possible.
Great professor for a GE. He makes the class fun and interesting. Very little homework or reading, it's practically all lecture, so if you attend class, you should be just fine.
I was a bit skeptical about taking the class because it didn't seem like an interesting subject, but Dolan made the material interesting and easy to understand. His anecdotes are funny! Make sure to attend lecture because most of the tests are based on notes rather than the readings. His test format seems simple but the questions are a bit tricky.
Dolan is great! He really does care about his students. He tries to lighten up the mood with jokes.. it doesn't always work- but I appreciate the effort on his part. He engages the class in discussion and is open for questions at any point. I may be an Earth Sciences major within the year after his course!
Dolan is a great guy. There is no homework, and the tests are based off of lectures, so attending is important. I would definitely recommend this class.
i dont get why this teacher gets good marks. while he tries to make jokes, he talks to his students as if there babies and gives extremely hard tests that cover topics never discussed.
makes the subject matter unnecessarily hard. every tiny detail he says in lecture is fair game for the midterms and finals. he goes to fast and is unorganized and unfriendly when asking questions one-on-one. HATE THIS CLASS
his class is awful, he needs to learn how to talk to people and answer questions without making students feel stupid. he expects everyone to be a geology genius. he sucks, if you take his geol 240 class you will regret it
All topics are scattered, and tests are extremely hard.
This is such a fun class! He knows what he is teaching and always make the class materials fun to learn. Only complain is that you would have to sit in the front of the classroom in order to listen clearly.
Very hard
I dont know why people complain so much about him. He's not easy nor hard, his tests cover his lectures only, he tries to make the class fun and you learn a lot. If you feel this class is hard and think he's a bad teacher is because you are a lazy person! If you cant listen seat and the front and PAY ATTENTION!!
Fantastic class with fantastic teacher
Pretty funny guy. Says he hates to test his students but give 2 midterms and a final, which are all pretty hard. Overall, pretty good teacher, and i dont dread going to his class.
Really cool teacher who is energetic and made lecture worth my while. Humorous guy who teaches in class well, but the midterms are very specific and so notes are very important in this class. Lab is a joke. It's how you get the easy points. The worst part of this class, though, is the weekend field trip. 8am to 6 Saturday or Sunday, it sucked
GREAT class, was not expecting it when I signed up for a geology GE. Dolan is like Bill Nye, he has an infectious enthusiasm for the subject. Lecture is always entertaining. I never used the textbooks and didn't have an issue, midterms and exams straightforward if you attend lecture! Definitely go to class, much nicer than doing the reading instead
Extremely Hard exams
Worst professor I've had at USC. He goes out of his way to try and flunk his students. He makes his tests harder than they need to be which is why out of a large lecture class of almost 200 students our class average was a D. He's extremely arrogant and thinks everyone needs to be a geologist.
This professor is on a power trip and expects too much out of his students. He routinely humiliates students for asking what he thinks considers as bad questions. Very difficult class. The labs raise your grade but the two midterms are extremely technical and unfair.
This guy is on power trip. Midterms are nearly impossible. I studied forever and still got a C+.
Midterm questions are not within the course curriculum. Lectures are boring and it's almost impossible to stay awake. I thought this class would be easy but it's easily the worst class I've ever taken in college. The field trip is so hot and boring that I considered taking my life by jumping into the crevice of a fault.
Really nice guy who is enthusiastic about the subject. Class was humorous and enjoyable enough. Tests weren't too bad although there were some specific questions. Come to class, pay attention and you will be fine. The readings are basically a supplement, it is easy to get by without or simply skimming the text.
He is a horrible professor who does not test what he teaches. I took clear notes, as well as his advice about sharing notes with others in the class and his midterms were still fail-bound. I took this GE, I repeat GENERAL EDUCATION course- not a professional geologist course- to boost my gpa and all it did was bring me down. Thanks for nothing.
Avoid at all costs. Too much work and effort for what's supposed to be a basic GE. Lecture attendance is basically mandatory for notes, as blackboard powerpoints are intentionally missing captions. Tests are very difficult. Class graded on curve - 50% get C's, 50% get B's. Again, avoid at all costs.
way too hard for a GE. seriously dont take this class.
Quite possibly the worst class I've ever had at USC. The teacher is downright awful. He goes way too fast through his lectures, doesn't answer questions clearly and worst of all you have a field trip in the desert when it's 90 degrees and you are staring at rocks.....??
Awful professor! Do not take this class. If you are already enrolled in this course please rate this teacher poorly on student evaluations!
Okay this class is not a death sentence. It's also not "an easy A" status - but you can get an A. Go to every lecture, take GREAT notes, skim the texts, and do good in labs (which is easy). Study hard - two midterms, 1 final, all multiple choice.
James is an excellent lecturer. His presentations are organized, interesting and engaging. He's also just a really cool dude; very funny and helpful, both inside and outside of class. You need to attend his lectures and take good notes, but if you do that you'll never have homework (or reading) and you'll ace the tests. Great course.
One of the worst professors I've had at USC.. extremely rude, doesn't fully answer questions clearly because he wants to get through his lecture at fast as possible.. and worst of all his tests are absolutely awful.. avoid this guy..he shouldn't even be teaching at all
This class made me decide that I'll never donate money to USC.Dolan never allowed us to see answers that we got wrong on midterms. You'll never know how you're doing in the class. He keeps lights off and dark the entire time you're taking notes.Talks very fast and doesn't care if you understand. SC is broken. Will give SC a bad yelp score too.
Although this isn't an "easy" class, I did learn a LOT. Go to every single lecture, and take intense notes - this alone will get you in the top of the class. Read the texts, study hard. In reference to the comment below -- you CAN see your midterms, you just can't take them home. Go to office hours and the TA will go over questions with you.
Worst class and worst professor at USC
Prof Dolan is really enthusiastic but is hard to keep up with. He uses powerpoints but they just have pictures so don't really help for outside study. Some of the questions on the test are about random or really specific things. Come to lectures!! I have looked for the notes online and they are not there. Bring a laptop and write quickly.
V fast talker, bring a laptop to keep up. When studying look at other people's notes too because you've probably missed like 15% of what he said. There are 2 midterms, worth about 15% each, and one final, worth about 30%. The tests are TF and then multiple-choice but he tries to trick you in them! The labs are straight-forward so go to those.
Probably one of the most disorganized, unstructured lectures I've been in- lacks a flow and outline for the course. What's worse is the fact that Prof. Dolan will digress and suddenly transition into an entirely different topic. For a science GE, take a different course unless you're interested in geology. He also doesn't follow the required text.
Worst class ever. Field trip on a Sunday was tedious. Drove for about 4 hours, heard him talk and stared at rocks. The average of midterms and a final were Ds, lectures were boring and too detailed for a GE. Labs were helpful, but still the materials are too advanced for a GE. Do not take this class if you're not good or not interested in science.
I would not recommend this class. Dolan is enthusiastic and knowledgeable, but he talks fast and you miss probably 30% of what he's saying even if you go to every class. Exams are brutal (12 TF, 12 MC), he tells you that he designs all TF q's to make you think you're right, and the MC were extremely in depth. You won't get by with memorization
Rude and tries to take out his frustration on students who aren't Geol majors which is pretty much the entire class. He openly said he tries to flunk people on his midterms because he wants to separate the people who care from the people who don't.. not sure how many people he's talking about as everyone I know wanted to just get through the class.
He's very contradictory and says things like any questions? but then answers people in a very condescending and exploitative manner. He advises that we should always pick the easiest answer on exams and then brags how he knows how to write deceptive questions. I was a straight A student, but now I have a C glaring back at me from my report card.
Awful teacher. Probably the worst professor I've ever had in college. Rude and likes to take out his frustration on non Geology majors. His tests are ridiculous. He gives questions to intentionally trick everyone. My class had well over 100 people in it and the midterm average was a d -
Pros: Super into geology, very intelligent, lots of personal life stories to share, grades on curve Cons: large scope of material needs to be learned (class way too in depth for a GE), expects you to memorize random numbers, very specific test questions, lectures get boring if you're not into subject overall: never skip class, do labs
honestly in my first year, but he's the kindest, most generous, most amazing professor i have had in my whole 16 unit schedule. WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!!
Dolan changed his grading a bit this semester, so it is now easier to do well. There is no homework aside from the occasional reading (rare), which is great! Most of your grade will come from quizzes and labs in the discussion section so you MUST go. LEARN SPECIFIC EARTHQUAKES. Overall, a good class and professor.
Guys seriously don't take this class. Blood sweat and tears to get that -A. Boring lectures, everyone fails the tests but he has an extreme curve. Lab is a must, class material and lab don't really relate but there are weekly quizzes and the lab is worth points so you need to attend them all. Opened the book once and fell asleep after 5 minutes
One of the worst class at USC. Stay away, dont bother unless you actually like geology
One of the best classes I've ever taken! Clearly the highlight of my entire semester. Would not recommend it if you are not actually interested in Geology, but Professor Dolan is one of the coolest professors I've ever had. He is seriously inspirational and hilarious; however, you really need to work hard in class and attend all lectures!
Dolan's lectures can be very hard to follow and it is important that you take good notes. He does assign readings but truthfully they aren't necessary. If you show up to the lectures and pay attention you'll do fine. If you have no interest in geology don't take this class. Some labs are difficult but if you give it a decent effort you'll be fine.
Dolan is by far the most passionate professor I have ever had. He tries to be funny during lectures, but they are really boring and I fell asleep during almost every one. You must attend every class and lab if you want to do well, however they are completely unrelated. No extra credit offered unless you do JEP, which I highly recommend!
Earthquakes was one of the best classes I've taken at USC. Extremely interesting information, although it can get pretty technical at times. Don't miss lecture since midterms and final are totally based from whatever notes you take, and the posted powerpoints are just pictures. But if you do the work class it totally manageable and is curved a lot
Look, James is funny and really tries to make the lectures interesting but I had a hard time getting engaged. The exams have extremely tricky multiple choice questions that were meant to trick you. I missed more lectures than I should have and paid the price. If you attend lectures and are engaged, you will do fine. The labs are very easy.
Take this class pass no pass. Lab is fairly easy and does not require much effort. Lectures are extremely boring and not mandatory to go to. James makes his tests crazy difficult. Would only recommend doing this class pass no pass.
Some of the best dad jokes I've heard. If you pay attention and write down everything he says in lectures you will get an A in the class. Even if you don't do that you'll be fine because he gives a very generous curve. He claims his tests are hard, but if you know the material in the class you'll be fine. I learned helpful info on earthquake safety
One of the most informative courses I've ever taken. He's a really smart and funny guy, but some lectures can be a bit boring. You must show up to as many Labs and lectures as possible to get an A as he grades on a curve. Almost all material for the tests are presented in lecture. Tests are tough but again graded on a curve.
When you have to put "these questions aren't designed to trick you" on the test and have to say it multiple times in class maybe you should ask yourself if maybe those questions actually are meant to trick us.
Great professor and interesting class. Going to lectures/ labs and paying attention will make this class an easy A. Can be somewhat tedious but the professor is super passionate and teaches the material well. Very solid choice for a physical science GE.
Actually the worst class. I'm being pretty nice with the 2. His lectures are boring and so unorganized. It's difficult to follow the concepts. He starts saying something and then goes "we'll talk about that later" and never does. Tests are unapologetically difficult but the curve is HUGE. Honestly smart guy but terrible professor.
Super knowledgeable. The material/lectures are very dense and can be a lot to keep track of but I found the information pretty interesting and as long as you go to every lecture and pay attention you can soak it all up. Really like how he makes the material applicable to life and I found myself telling my friends about things I learned. Solid GE.
Professor Dolan is a very caring guy. He does his best to make his lectures interesting, and if you have any interest in earthquakes, this class will be a joke for you. Everything is very informative, but the way its taught makes it easily learnable- I got an A on the first midterm without studying at all. Very great guy, would love to take again!
Don't recommend taking this class if it is online, as he didn't really adapt much to the online format nor the shortened semester. Brushed through content and was poor at letting us know what was going to be on the (2) midterms and final. Not than much homework, Labs honestly saved me.
James really doesnt deserve the bad reviews. His lectures may be dense but he always tries to make them entertaining. Definitely some of the best dad jokes Ive ever heard. Tests are graded harshly but the curve is HUGE. Very good choice for physical science GE
Professor Dolan is a funny guy, and really knows his stuff, but as a non-science major taking this as P/NP G.E., I still found class difficult. You really have to be engaged in the material, there's A LOT to memorize, and it's STRICTLY closed notes for all tests (even in online format). Non-science majors just looking to clear the GE, take P/NP.
He is very funny and really nice but is no-nonsense when it comes to exams. You do not have to go to class because he will post the slides-- but the slides have no information, just pictures. So I strongly recommend heavy notetaking in class, but he is very entertaining.
My favorite class at USC thus far, his earthquake lectures were so fun and interesting. Lots of class time with weekly labs, but labs were helpful for understanding the content and engaging even with it being online. Highly recommended
James Dolan is passionate about two things: Rocks, and putting an end to academic dishonesty. This mans class is harder than quartz, but the information isn't crystal clear.
It will be an easy class if you understand earth science and are good at math. His lectures are slow and boring; his cringey jokes are even worse. The lab is independent time to work on a packet of around 10 pages which usually takes an hour.
Disorganized presentation of information. The delivery of information caused the lectures to feel futile sometimes. The lab is "here's your packet you have 2 hours to finish. " At least in the lab, we have a resource to self-teach ourselves. The professor clearly is out of touch with the students, very unprofessional in the way he lectures.
I'm a humanities major, so I often find it difficult not to zone out in long, dense STEM lectures. Not so with Prof. Dolan. His lectures are dense, and I wish there was some sort of readings I could use to augment the lectures, but he's wonderfully entertaining and I loved the dad jokes. His Loma Prieta anecdote is a particular highlight.
Professor Dolan is very passionate about earthquakes and it shows in his lectures. He really tries to make them interesting and throws in funny dad jokes and commentary with it. If you go to class, it really is not that hard. There are no out of class assignments, so if you show up to lab and do decent on the 3 tests (w huge curve) you'll be fine.
Make friends in your lab section and do the packets together - it makes life a lot easier. Do well in lab (worth 40% of final grade) and don't skip class. Studied hard and got the grade I deserved, but would never do it again. Take P/NP.
Professor Dolan is a great teacher - he has a dorky sense of humor which makes class fun. He's very passionate about his work as well as teaching, and it shows. As long as you're interested in the subject, class is never dull. There was barely any homework - a few pages of reading each week. Only took me 10m/week. I'd take this class again!!
Dolan is very passionate and loves to joke around. However, this course is extremely lecture-heavy--if you do not take detailed notes and listen in lecture, you will fail the exams. Although there is a generous curve, students do not know their grade until after the final. If you are not GENUINELY (I'm serious) interested, save yourself the stress.
Although he may catch a lot of heat on this site, James is one of the most interesting professors that I had last semester. The people who complained about him were probably too lazy to show up, pay attention, and just take notes. I only prepared about a week for each exam, read the pre-lab 1-2 times for each lab and this was enough to get me an A.
I loved the Professor. It's a great GE to take and a lot of interesting things to learn about. It's important to show up for class tho since the information that's going to be on the midterms and the final are all discussed in class. When you study enough you will be more than fine. Attend the labs and preread the lab - class gets curved a lot...
My TA told me 1 week before the final that I would certainly get an A in the class if I did AVERAGE on the final (since the class is curved). I get my report back and I got a C+. Shows the severe lack of understanding between the TA's and prof Dolan. His exams are excruciatingly difficult, he doesn't budge when it comes to EC, just don't take him.
Prof Dolan was the best professor I've ever had. I went in knowing nothing about geology and left the class with a newfound interest. The material is super interesting. Tests are difficult but if you show up to class and engage with the material you'll be fine. I wish I could take this class again. I love u james dolan <3
Dr. Dolan is tough but extremely fair when it comes to grading. He does lectures by Zoom and puts the recordings up on Blackboard, so there's no excuse not to take notes for tests. But those tests are purposefully difficult. It's recommended you go and take notes in person, as the only thing that can sink you is not grasping the subject matter.
This class was extremely hard and very lecture heavy. His slides are not helpful at all because they are just pictures and only way to do well is to take a lot of notes on what he says during class. He posts zoom recordings of his lectures but I highly recommend going in person. There is basically no homework besides reading the pre-lab every week.
Really passionate and educated about earthquakes, but this was an unnecessarily hard class. For a GE, it really was too specific when it came to test questions (our averages for the tests were like 60%). But the class is curved so as long as you are decently smart and show up to lab it is fine. Hard to pay attention in lecture since it gets boring.
Professor Dolan *tries* to make the class as enjoyable and interesting as possible, and most of the time he succeeds. Be ready for dad jokes galore and quickly moving through topics. Powerpoint is image heavy with little text so really listen to what he's saying, if it's important he'll repeat it. Studying in groups really helps.
Never take this professor again.Hard lectures and tests.
The lecture slides are not helpful (just pictures) so you have to go to class and pay attention. The labs are kinda hard and there are pre-lab quizzes. The class is curved very heavily however, which makes up for the incredibly hard tests where the average is around a D to a C.
Comically difficult for a GE. Labs with a quiz every week, two midterms that were far too difficult, and a final. Class average was somewhere in the C-/D+ range. Got curved which was nice, but tells you all you need to know. Avoid
Avoid. Awful professor. Lab quizzes every single week that require studying and there are three exams where he expects you to essentially memorize every word he says in lecture. He recorded the class which is the only reason it was somewhat okay, but this is his last semester recording lecture. Exam average is a 60 percent. do not take!
Professor Dolan talks a lot. Sometimes when he talks it is not always noteworthy. Do your best with the lecture notes and make sure to ask questions during the lecture to check for understanding. The labs can really bring your grades down so try your best!
Hardest class I've taken at USC. He makes it as hard as possible and the labs are ridiculous. Unless you you're in love with geology, do NOT take.
The class is very difficult. The lectures are all photos and the exams are impossible to get anything better than a D. I've barely learned a thing because the material is just too hard to understand and instead of a study guide, we get a 26 page document on everything we've learned so far. I would avoid this class cause it's not worth the stress.
I LOVE YOU JAMES DOLAN!! BEST CLASS I'VE TAKEN AT USC
Prof Dolan is a great person and lecturer, students took this class for GE credit. DO NOT DO THIS. The class is only based on exam grades and you do NOT KNOW YOUR GRADE UNTIL THE END OF THE SEMESTER. You cannot check, they will not tell you (everything is curved). Overall a difficult class for non GEOL majors, but prof and TAs are helpful.
Do NOT take this class as a GE!! The class is made out harder to be than it actually is by the professor and the TAs and it becomes extremely stressful. There is a quiz in lab every week and labs will take full time. Demeanor of lectures is very condescending and the slides are not helpful for studying at all. The curve is very generous though.
It is honestly a really hard GE. The tests are very difficult and the averages are really low. The only good thing is that there is usually a big curve. The average grade gets turned into a B+ on everything.
For a GE this is taught like a masters class. Exam content does not reflect the important things you might note take on- but rather "factoids" and the averages for these exams are incredibly low. The professor is passionate, but don't take this unless you really love geology. Not an easy GE options.
One of the worst professors I ever had at USC. Literally stated from day 1 that he was trying to make his tests literally impossible to weed out the non geology majors... this is a GE class lol.
As long as you attend lectures and take notes you will be fine. Lab is easy and worth around 40% of your grade. Only downside is that tests are 50% True or false questions, and they are difficult. But, average on tests are pretty low, so its not that hard to get a decent grade. Got around a 70% on each exam and an A in lab , and I got an A.
I wrote the "RUN" review let me explain run for the hills because this is the worst class i've taken in undergrad. in the fall, we actually got the lowest scores on exams in his history as a prof i think. the exams are the hardest things ever, incredible difficult content explained horrible. find a classmate and depend on each other to study.
Professor was nice and funny, totally not mean or anything. The course however was really difficult for a GE. Don't take it if you know nothing of earthquakes or natural science in general. Good course (if you wanna be a geologist) otherwise stay away for the sake of your mental well being.
Professor is convinced that incredibly specific geology facts will lead to us meeting our wife/husband at a cocktail party in the future. I'm convinced his wife is either nonexistent or deaf by how boring he is. Doesn't post words on slides, or study guides, the average on each of 3 exams was close to 60%. Ridiculous amount of work, do not take.
Actually such a terrible professor. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS
Okay, yeah, Dr. Dolan is not for everyone. His teaching style is pretty unorthodox (meaning he mostly just tells us crazy stories about EQs/his experiences in the field and his slides are not super helpful), but he is a hoot. The material is pretty hard for a GE. Show up to class, you'll learn a lot and have fun doing it. Shout out to his TAs.
Dr. Dolan was a good professor who is passionate about Geology, and makes that very clear in a positive way. He understands the class is difficult and lectures can get boring, so he throws in some jokes to lighten the mood, which I think most people appreciated. However, the exams for the class were very difficult and memorization of facts heavy.
