very good professor, tries to make things interesting. sounds a bit pompous sometimes, but is easy to talk to and available outside class. tests are hard, but if you study, you'll do fine.
His tests are hard, but there's a lot of curving, so if you study a lot the night before you'll be fine. He's a great lecturer, and made me understand chemistry even though I'm definitely not a chemistry person. And he's so hot!
Lectures were very long and hard to pay attention to, but he does a great job of reviewing material each class. His powerpoints are very organized and he obviously knows what he's talking about. Tests were difficult but quizzes were pretty much a guarenteed 100%. He gives out quiz candidates beforehand and picks two to be on the quiz.
Very knowledgable in class and organized with his lectures. Others often complained because lectures tend to be tedious, but that seems to be more an issue of the course material than him. Tests are tough, but certainly reasonable given a good understanding of the material
He lectures using powerpoint, which can make lectures boring. He posts lectures on blackboard so it's easy to review what went on in class if you don't go. The tests are tough but with the enormous curve, anyone who wants to do well and puts any time into studying will do well.
Donahue's tests are pretty hard, and the averages are ~50%; but like everybody else in the chemistry department, he curves the grades. His lectures are standard and monotonous; he uses the same powerpoints as other chem-108 professors. P.S. Did anyone else notice how he wore the same suit for about 3/4 of the semester?
Boring and tedious class. Like other intro science classes, lectures based on powerpoint that are put on blackboard. Grade is based on tests & quizes. Quizes are easy with preparation. Tests are insane. But so is curving. Extra credit is given for going to lectures outside class. I do not recommend this teacher.
nice guy. lectures are kind of boring. quizzes are gimmes. exams range from insanely easy to insanely difficult. he curves well though. final exam is 50 mult choice. study the book and the lectures and you should be in good shape.
DO NOT recommend at all. Chemistry made dull. This man shows now passion for the subject and the attendance in the class is proof positive of this. You don't have to go to a single class if you know how to read a powerpoint slide. 100% not recommended.
Great Teacher. Gen Chem 2 is by nature a little boring, but his lectures are organized and notes are online. Best teacher I've come across in the Chem dept.
awsome
Not sure if he'll be doing the service learning course again, but it was super easy. We went to McMain 4 or 5 times during the semester and showed them experiments. We couldn't get a credit hour because we hardly even put in 20 hours of work, but it was worth it to get the service requirement out of the way. nice guy but the class was unorganized.
Donahue is by far the best chem professor. He takes the time to explain things in class and uses a powerpoint that makes his lectures much more organized. He tries to communicate his passion for chem and is very understanding. Definitely take the time to meet him during his office hours
Makes an effort to get to know his students. Clear passion for subject. Class attendance is important to know what he will put on tests. Exams are about 1/2 conceptual and 1/2 calculations. It's a little dry at times, but you will learn a ton if you make an effort to keep up with the material.
Donahue is a very fair professor. Tests are hard, but he grades explicitly on a curve. Very nice man, very encouraging, and formats the class as to benefit hard-workers. Tries to get to know students (go to office hours!). Class can be boring, but not his fault. Awesome actor too: loved him in "21", "American Beauty", and "The Usual Suspects".
Very nice, cares about what students think. tests are hard and don't cover all that he says it will cover. he chooses a few areas to focus on. make sure to get %100 on the quizzes, it helps your grade in the end. class is very boring but helps if you go.
The man is a very good teacher. The subject is dull to non-chemistry people, but it is understandable with him teaching you. He tries to relate and get to know you. Loved his "you can be anything you want" speeches thrown in, too. I enjoyed him-- not enough to enjoy chemistry, but enough to come to class.
He is super helpful and more than willing to meet outside of class.
Good looking. looks like Kevin Spacey. Lectures are fine, and he can be funny sometimes. Quiz questions are given ahead of time. Haven't take a test yet.
Prof Donahue is brilliant...too brilliant. He is very passionate about chemistry but doesn't understand how to make the concepts understandable for those who aren't as brilliant as himself. Tests are ridiculously hard with averages in the 50s and 60s but the curves are massive. Good luck!!
I really respect professor donahue. He loves what he does, and he's extremely knowledgeable about pretty much everything, not just chemistry. You can do well in his class, you just have to work for it. His tests are always tricky, but just take a few deep breaths and do your best because it WILL be curved substantially. I promise.
A really nice, intelligent man. His tests are really hard but the curve is massive. He really likes getting to know his students and he loves what he does and is really good at it. Make sure to attend lectures because some of the experiments he does in class are on the exam.
Awesome class! He is very interested in teaching and wants you to do well. Tests are hard, but if you study it will pay off. He curves really well. His quizes are easy with problems given before. Class demonstrations. Tests are some calculations but a lot of qualitative reasoning. Textbook is a must. Take his class. He is entertaining and helpful
Donahue is a fantastic professor. Chem sucks, but he is very clear and wants you to do well. He drops an exam and gives ample time to take the test, which is extremely beneficial to learning the material.
Great teahcer. He really knows his stuff and shows a high interest level in class. His test are hard and consist about half math questions and half concept questions. Grades in the 80's are doable with a little hard work. He does generously curve at the end of the year so that the average is around a low B. He is also from my home state Indiana.
Pretty good teacher, very knowledgable. Talks at a somewhat higher level than a normal professor... tests are difficult but he curves a lot. provides quiz candidates before quizzes so they should be fairly easy. you have to keep up from the beginning of you will get lost.
Going to class isn't necessary because you can get the info from the textbook and powerpoints. mostly tests on tough concepts that are hard to study for. Tests are late at night with unlimited time. Class is boring. Go to office hours to get points back on the tests.
As long as you study hard and read the book you will be fine. Also, go to his office hours because he is very helpful. He's also not bad to look at during class ;)
Great teacher. He cares a lot about his students. Very tough at first, but once you understand how he writes the tests it gets easier.
A hard class but very possible to get an A if you study hard. He is very helpful in office hours although one might be intimidated by his intelligence at first. One of the best chem teachers ive ever had. very knowledgable in the subject.
A very helpful professor! As long as you read his lecture notes and text book you can do very well.
It would behoove students at Tulane University to take Dr. Donahue's CHEM 1080 class. He is brilliant, always able to answer questions, and is also very caring towards his students, in regards to chemistry and life itself. The class is difficult, but you learn a lot and leave with a greater respect for chemistry. He is available during office hrs
I would HIGHLY recommend Donahue to anyone taking Gen Chem 108. His is a remarkably intelligent professor and truly cares about the success of his students. He extended our test taking time, puts together practice exams for his students, and takes the time to learn everyone's name. All this and he speaks in clear English.. what could be better??
The best lecturer I've had at Tulane. He's super smart and explains things wonderfully. His tess are well-made but difficult. The test are graded hard too. You'll need to study more than you think you should. Going to class is important, because test questions sometimes focus on specific things he mentions in class.
The very best Gen Chem professor at Tulane. His lectures are incredibly good, his tests are tricky (they make you think) but he always curves and gives three hours to complete each exam which is more than plenty. Go to class, work hard, and be happy that you have a professor at this level, and do not be afraid to go to office hours, he always helps
I was not interested in chemistry until I took this class! He is a very inspiring teacher and teaches concepts very clearly. His tests are hard, but the class is worth it. The quizzes are easy, and he gives you exact quiz candidates before hand. He is very helpful at office hours and very fair. I would definitely recommend for chem 1080.
Donahue is an amazing person. He's a genius - MIT and Harvard (twice)-and is extremely passionate about chemistry. If you are lucky enough to have the opportunity to take a class with him, do it. He is the reason I even remotely enjoy chemistry or find it at all interesting. His tests are hard, but he's the most helpful professor I've ever had.
Had him for 108 and his graduate Bioinorganic and Medicinal Chemistry class. He is easily my favorite (and best) teacher of undergrad. His lecture is both clear and profound and can elicit interest in otherwise boring topics. His great teaching easily justify his DIFFICULT tests. He is also great 1 on 1. Emphatically recommended.
Donahue is probably the best chemistry professor at this school. Not only is he contagiously passionate about chemistry, but he knows the material backwards and forwards and never struggles to give clear answers to questions. Tests are challenging but can be managed with enough preparation.
I loved the evening exams. Can be taken in 50 min but you're given 3 hrs. Takes the stress away from being worried about the time constraint. Donahue was very willing to help & very informative. Must read textbook, especially the figures in the margins. Class demos show up on tests. The tests were hard. Fair bell curve.
Fantastic class, fantastic professor. Sure, it was pretty tough (the 3 test averages have been 57, 56, and 54), but he's remarkably fair with grading. Aside from the grade, he teaches very well, clearly explaining everything in his lectures and going back if he thinks it's unclear. Class Demos, engaging lectures, he knows your name - Great Class.
Helpful and clear lectures made attending class very useful. In-class demonstrations can appear on the tests. The grading was fair and the instructor was very accommodating. The three-hour evening test time reduced test-taking stress. You will have to work hard, but the class was definitely worth the effort. Instructor learns your name :)
Professor Donahue is a great professor. His tests are tough, but they are extremely analytical, so you really gain understanding of the material. He is also very willing to help and is understanding of any concerns you might have as long as you talk to him. Super fair grader. I wish I could take him for all my Chemistry classes.
Donahue is one of those professors that you look back on your college career and know that he was a gem. His tests are challenging, but he truly strives to serve his students so that they get the most out of the course as possible. He's helpful in office hours and email too. Not an easy A but having him as a prof is worth any grade in my opinion.
Lectures are informative and by the book, and in-class demonstrations are great. He is always respectful of students(learns names). He is an excellent professor answering all questions thoroughly both in class and outside of class via office hoursemail. He changed how I study and learn chemistry: more concepts plus math. Tests are challenging.
Full disclosure: I did poorly in this class (Gen Chem 2). That said, if you are a freshman at Tulane--even one like me, who struggles--TAKE THIS MAN'S CLASS. No other instructor brings such crystal clear cogency to his lectures, and you will leave feeling like you received a genuine education. This man is a professor of rare caliber.
Donahue is the most likely the best chemistry teacher you can have at Tulane. Even though his class is harder than the others, he truly cares about his students and wants them to learn and succeed. His lectures are as interesting as a chemistry lecture can be, and his experiments at the end of classes really help to convey the concepts
Like everyone says, he's a great teacher. He really wants his students to do well, but gives very difficult tests. I highly recommend if you're into chemistry and want to learn a lot about the material. If you just need to pass chemistry to meet a requirement, don't take his class. His tests are a lot harder than the tests in other classes.
Dr. Donahue expects a lot out of his students but it's worth it... You learn so much taking his class. He's very friendly and always available if you need help in office hours. He's really passionate about chemistry and it rubs off on his students!
Donahue is probably the smartest professor in the chem department, and possibly in the whole school. He loves chemistry and tries his hardest to make you love it also. That being said his lectures leave nothing out, and he moves very fast so it's hard to take thorough notes. The tests are very hard and he's a harsh grader but the curve evens it out
He is very good at what he does and he does post PowerPoint online. Its just that sometimes it can be very confusing and he can move pretty fast through the slides.
Very smart, very eloquent, very invested. MUCH different than my experience in Burin's class. The material is difficult, but he is very clear and thorough in his lectures.
TAKE DONAHUE!!! His class is seen by most as difficult, but if you read the textbook thoroughly and pay attention in lectures you will do fine. He is very passionate about chemistry and very available and helpful. Frequent in-class chemistry demos that are often on the test. He is very well spoken and clear. Very funny and inspirational.
Donahue is the best Gen Chem professor I have heard of or experienced. He loves what he's doing and it makes the lectures more interesting than most of the other professors. Hard tests, averages are usually around 60 but he curves. He really wants everyone to do well but you've got to read the textbook.
TAKE THIS TEACHER. His lectures are super helpful and you actually learn in his class. His class is difficult but if you try you will perform well. He has 5 quizzes and you drop one (and he legit gives you the exact questions to study for). AND HE MAD CURVES. Tests are hard, sure, but the curve though. Best gen chem teacher out there :)
Professor Donahue is one of, if not the best professor I've had at Tulane. He makes you work for your grade but it is very much worth it because you learn and grow a lot. He respects his students and never makes you feel stupid for asking a question. His lectures are interesting and he is funny and engaging. He also curves the class!
Chem 1080 is a hard course. Donahue's lectures were pretty good at teaching the course. Lectures straight from slides. No to go to class but has inclass experiments show up on tests. Wish he did examples on board. Tests were challenging. Extended 3 hour testing time was nice to have, but if you don't have a solid base, it will not help you much.
Donahue is leagues above most other intro chem teachers at Tulane, but focuses a lot more on conceptual aspects of chemistry than most; he loves to ask test questions about trends. If you like the math more, maybe pass on him. Take note of all the examples and demonstrations in class, and read the textbook for extra examples. Overall great teacher.
Very good teacher and very nice man, who is helpful in and out of class. He teaches very well, but the only problem are his exams. If the exams were closer to what was taught in class, close to examples in class or textbook, it would be a very good course, but the tests are not even close to those. Other than that, best teacher and very clear.
Professor Donahue is an absolutely amazing professor. I learned more in his class than I did with two years of high school chemistry AND Chem 1070 all put together. More than that, he really cares and values his student's learning, and he goes above and beyond to explain to students concepts and questions. My advice is to definitely take his class.
Great teacher and person that is very passionate about chemistry. His tests are extremely difficult though. Don't be surprised if the class average is around 50%. His lectures are very engaging and interesting though but his tests are very very hard.
The class is really hard in general. But Donahue is really clear about what he wants - posts everything online and is really nice to you if you go to office hours. Have to study a lot, but he curves your whole grade at the end
Donahue upholds his promise to teach "the best that I can with the time that I have." He makes tremendous efforts to learn the names of all his students to ensure they received individual attention, consideration, and care. Read the textbook, work every practice problem, understand lecture demonstrations, and ask your questions! Hard work pays off.
Daddy D is the bomb. Learned the names of all 150+ students in his lecture class. His quizzes were verbatim from the candidates he gives. Tests are known to be more difficult, but are doable. Offers a generous curve, and is very helpful both in lecture and office. Demonstrations in class show up on tests. Tests heavy on concept with application.
I've never really been a fan of chemistry, but I think Dr. Donahue's course is the closest I'll come to actually enjoying the subject. He's also a very caring professor. He's not an easy professor, but he cares about learning. Tests are conceptually heavy, but you have 3 hours to finish them even though they only take 1 hour,so you're not rushed
His tests are really hard but he curves REALLY generously. For 3 tests I got 50+ for each and still ended up with a B+ at the end of semester becasue class average was around 50 for each test. The quizzes come straight from the textbook so they are easy. If you put a good amount of time and attention, you will get a good grade
His lectures are engaging, and he makes an effort to explain things in a way that's easy for students to understand. His tests are hard but there's a generous curve at the end of the year. His quizzes are straight from the book and a list of 10-15 practice problems that he gives you well in advance so it's easy to get 100s on those. Dr. D is great!
In my opinion Donahue is the best freshman chemistry prof. He cares a lot and puts a lot of effort into his lectures. His tests are fair and they're doable if you study hard. KEEP UP WITH THE WORK, its the key to doing well and makes the tests so much easier.
THE DON is by far the greatest chemistry teacher at Tulane. His tests are hard and his lectures heavy, but he is so passionate about the subject and teaches it in a clear manner for his students. He is incredibly helpful at office hours and an all-around great person. You'll have to work for it, but he wants you to succeed!!
If you are coming from a crappy first semester of gen chem, he's not for you. If you have a solid chemistry background then you can go for it, but be wary.
His test are super hard, but they are typically pretty concept heavy. So if you might not be good at the math part, but have a basic understanding of the concepts you will do okay on the tests. He gives practice tests and the quizzes are verbatim off of the quiz candidate list.
Gen chem sucks but Donahue works really hard to prepare students for real future applications of the knowledge. His tests seem significantly harder (heavy on conceptual applications) from other professors, but I feel like it was worth it. He sometimes does little demonstrations, reads poems, and gives plenty of genuinely endearing words of wisdom.
Professor Donahue is the best science teacher I have ever had. It is clear he is passionate and incredibly knowledgeable about his field. He incorporates inspirational blurbs, fun facts, and readings from chemistry-related literature into his lectures which make them more interesting. Tests are concept-based so need to really understand material.
Got an A in chem last semester and just hoping to pass now. Tests are ridiculously hard and the practice exams he gives are only a vague representation of the absurdities he throws on the real ones. He is one of the smartest people I've ever met, but I feel that he often forgets that his students don't also have Harvard PhDs in chem like he does.
Tests are too HARD and aren't a representation of the practice tests. Gives no partial credit and can't grasp you have a life. He does actually try to teach, but often time rushes lectures just to meet course standards and doesn't care how that effects you, over complicates every subject, and can't realize sometimes having no questions isn't good.
No. Just no. He is insanely smart but if you dont have a solid background in chem do not take this class. The tests are three to four questions with multiple parts, but many of the parts build off of one another. So if you miss one part youre screwed for the rest of the problem with minimal partial credit.
Simply Amazing. First Chem professor that made me want to learn chem. A truly passionate professor that wants you to appreciate and understand chemistry. I learned so much from his class. Attending lectures are a must. Quizzes are easy if you do the candidates. Exams are hard. Prepare!! Youll love the class, but maybe not your grade ;)
Best chemistry professor at Tulane. Extremely organized in all of his lectures, with powerpoints illustrating everything. I had little to no background in chemistry and probably got a B+/A-. More important than his outstanding lecturing is his passion and heart, he makes a lasting impression that you'll remember forever, I really enjoyed the class.
Tests are WAYYYYYY too hard. 3-4 questions are given with multiple parts that build off of the answer to the first part. Therefore, if you miss one part you miss the whole question that's worth 35% of the test. Very degrading to continuously receive failing test grades on topics you've studied inside and out for weeks leading up to the test.
You can tell he definitely tries to teach well and wants to makes the subject interesting. However, towards the end of the semester, he moved really quickly and seemed to just want to get through the material rather than make sure we understood it. His tests are difficult (avgs were 60, 71, and 43) and he is rather stingy with partial credit.
Donahue is a fantastic person and truly cares about his students. He knows everyone's name in a 200 person lecture, even if you've never spoken to him. His tests are incredibly difficult, but he gives a very generous curve. Willing to help you out for as long as it takes if you make the effort with him. Do ALL the textbook practice problems!!!
Do not take this class. This class will kill your GPA even if you understand all of the material and think you are prepared for every exam. The exams test extreme application of qualitative principles and are subjective. Donahue rushed through every lecture and was uninterested. You will have to teach yourself and even then, it will not be enough.
Donahue is a great professor and is true to his word that if you work hard in his class, you will succeed. 3-hour tests were always stressful to prepare for, but also allows you to take your time and do your best. GREAT CURVE. At the end of the day, this was a solid class that will prepare you well for organic chemistry, which is pretty invaluable.
If you love chemistry and want to go above and beyond, take Donahue. If you just need the credit, take literally anyone else. Went from an A in chem first semester to a D second semester just by switching teacher. That said, he is a great teacher. Tests are very hard and require a deep understanding of concepts and how they interact.
Donahue was a solid professor. He knows what hes talking about but he grades very harsh and the tests are not easy. I was tutored and they claimed that this was the hardest Chem course he has ever seen. The curve was pretty nice tho, I bombed two tests and did okay on the final / a test and ended with a C+. He also has 5 quizzes that factor too.
Grade is based on quiz and exam grades. Quiz question candidates and solutions are always posted, so if you memorize and prepare right, you should get an easy 100. I think the exam difficulty level is pretty standard for a college chemisitry class. However, Donahue's lecture style is hard to follow. I have had to learn myself using Peason Plus.
Just took the general chemistry final as a freshman and half the test was on organic chemistry concepts we had never learned, or at least gone over for longer than one brief slide during a lecture. No doubt he knows chemistry very well but would not recommend taking him as a freshman. Praying I got above a 50
He is a very intelligent professor who makes an effort to know his students, all of them in a 100-person class. However, you cannot succeed in this class if you do not put in the work. The exams are difficult and his lectures are overcomplicated. As a freshman, if you are good at chemistry, take him. If not, take someone else.
Donahue's is very intelligent and used to teaching upper level classes, so his lectures are impossible to understand and overcomplicated if you haven't taken AP Chem. I basically taught the whole course to myself. The grades are purely based off of quizzes, exams, and the final, all of which are very hard. You should prob take someone else.
Donahue is clearly intelligent and I do not question his chemistry knowledge, but he is not qualified to teach an intro chem course. Lectures can get confusing quickly because of info you don't need to know but he finds interesting. Quizzes are a good grade boost. Exams are very difficult. Maybe take someone else if your chem knowledge is shaky
A great professor who cared about his students. Did not tolerate the blatant disrespect students would say during his lectures, but for those who did the work and listened we were able to learn. I went from the bottom of my high school chemistry class to a top 10 performer in his class because of his teaching. MUCH BETTER THAN ALTERNATIVE OPTIONS.
Donahue expects a deep understanding of concepts to succeed on tests. I had very little chemistry experience, so I had to put in many hours of practice to do well in this class. Donahue puts effort into his lectures and helping students, but it can sometimes be hard to keep up with him. His class is hard, but if you put in the work you will succeed
