If you have a chance to get into his one class a semester, take it. He is an active NYPD Sergeant who knows what he is taking about. I have only had about 3 professors in my 4 years of college who know how to apply the streets to thw classroom.

This was my favorite class of the semester. Prof. Durkin is one of the coolest guys at JJAY. Throughout the entire semester he engrossed his students in law stories and his homemade jokes. I wish I can take him for another class. He wanted us to read the chapters and cases but the class for the most part never read. Durkin is very helpful.

A great professor who knows his material and presents it in an interesting manner. Very funny and down to earth. You will need to read the book as the exam is directly from it. There are two legal briefs but that is breeze. I would highly recommend any of his classes.

Professor Durkin is just phenomenal. He clarifies everything from the book very concisely. Read book for extra points for participation. If he doesn't know you're name after a few lectures he'll call you out. A midterm and a final. He has a great review and will give the class a legal brief to bump up your grade. He will keep you entertained the entire semester with tons of energy and a million more laughs. Be prepared for questioning at the start of each class, pop up quizzes, a brief and midterm and final. One of the best professors in the school. He knows what he is talking about and is willing to help you understand the topic. I highly recommended. He does talk a bit fast but he repeats a lot of material in multiple classes to really drill it in. He doesn't take attendance but hates when a lot of people arrive late and if too many are missing.

PSC201 Professor James Durkin is one of the best Professors in John Jay . He's really great at breaking down his lectures. He does not use power points so you'll have to take good notes but, he will stress out certain parts in his lectures and will tell you what will be on his test. I took his class back in Spring 2014. I must say that he is one of the BEST professors Ive had at John Jay. Always has great stories to tell from his experience in law enforcement. He also went over test questions/answers the lecture before so take notes and youll pass with flying colors. Best thing of all, I met my now fiancé in his class :)

I never thought I would like a blue lives matter republican professor but Durkin is one of the best professors Ive ever taken. He makes the course interesting, uses his own personal experiences to teach, and encourages participation. He also respects all viewpoints, even if they differ from his own. Ive taken 2 courses with him & hes awesome.

just participate, even though you don't pass the one of the two exam you will definitely going to pass if you participate. midterm 40%, final 40%, two take-home quiz 2 (10% each). He's a funny and is often sarcastic but don't get offended or take it to heart. If he makes a joke about you or gives you a nickname, take it, smile on and laugh about it because it means he cares about you passing. Participate in class because it will help your grade if you're not doing so well. Show up, listen and take notes... a lot of notes.

Loved Prof. Durkin. I asked to overtally and he allowed me to, which I'm super grateful for. He made the material easy to understand, and made it as simple as possible. Always checked to make sure we understood. A few take home quizzes, a midterm and a final. Reading the textbook is a huge help but not mandatory as he goes over everything tested.

As long as you show that you understand or are making an effort to understand in class discussions, he will remember that if you dont do so hot on tests. Professor Durkin is an amazing professor. I took him online via zoom because of COVID and he was very understanding and a great teacher. There is no homework just a final, midterm, and two quizzes. Show up to class listen to the lectures, take notes and you'll get an easy A. I'm hoping to take him again.

The one thing I don't really like about his teaching method is that he has no notes for the class all your notes will come from his lectures so put close attention. Professor Durkin is great and if I could take him again I would. To start, I took this class in 2020 online. This class is all lecture with only two quizzes and two tests that are very easy. The lectures are interesting and since Professor Durkin is currently a LEO he makes the topics easy to understand while also giving real world advice.

This is my second time taking Professor Durkin, and you will never regret taking him. He gives great lectures and often relates it with his own personal experiences at NYPD. He is objective in his opinions. Also, take a lot of notes because he mostly lectures using his notes. The book is necessary if you want clarification.

Make sure you get ready to read! if you are prepared for class, lectures should go easy for you. Brings humor into the class. He is overall very well respected by students.

If you're a visual learner that likes slides or handouts this professor doesn't have notes on the board. You have to write things down while his speaking. Make sure to participate or else he will call on you. Attendance matter. It's a law class so be prepared to read cases sometimes he assigned 3 cases per class and make sure to read !!!!

Professor Durkin knows his law and is very respected towards his student. He does fool around and make jokes towards his student which I love.
