powerpoint notes he gives to you on disk, TAKE HIM, easiest in field, you learn!
looks like tom cruise :) easy guy....funny....take him
Sometimes can't the word out, but test are easy and broad.
He is BORING! but easy---hard lab though!!!
Acts like even he is confused sometimes, notes on disk so you can copy..hard lab
tests are straight from his notes which he puts od disc for you, easy class
he does not look like tom cruise! he is hard to understand, boring, and says uh every other word, but easy.
He was a great teacher the lectures were clear and the test came directly from the notes. He will not try to fail only will help you. He is the best in the Bio Dept. Make the right choice take Vankley
Extremely easy class. Don't even buy the book, it's a waste of money. Just go to class, kinda pay attention, and study the practice tests in the library--you'll get a good grade. He's very disorganized and tends to repeat himself. Interesting class.
very easy and somewhat organized. do not buy the book b/c of waste of money.
good teacher. class was easy but only because he teaches very well. his only bad mark would be the fact that he is habitually late to class and hypocritically gets upset at students for leaving early. again, great teacher
DO NOT BUY BOOK, DO NOT GO TO CLASS!!! He is the easiest teacher ever. I loved his class. I always had something else to do during class, never took notes, never studied until the night before, I loved his class. Take him, you will sleep better during cla
HE IS VERY ODD. BUT HE IS ALSO AN EASY TEACHER. THE TESTS ARE VERY EASY, AND ONLY READING THE BOOK GIVES YOU A BETTER EXPLANATION THAN NEEDED. SO WHEN YOU TAKE THE TESTS YOU CANT BELIEVE THE QUESTIONS BECAUSE THEY ARE SO EASY.
If Shaggy from Scooby Doo has a son... It's this guy. He really needs to take a pair of scissors to that hair!
really long and boring lectures.lots of study for tests.do not take him
REALLY easy class. Minimal studying required if you go to class and pay attention to his lectures. He is late to class every single day, and hates it when students leave his class early.
I agree with the Shaggy statement. He's really sweet, spastic in a make-you-smile way. Tests are pretty hard. Lectures never end, but he does slide presentations really fast and talks at the same time; kinda hard to keep up sometimes. But he's nice.
very hard, lectures are boring, needs try and make people understand better
VanKley is a good guy. If you're worried about anything go see him before the test and he'll basically tell you what's on it. He loves that. The lectures are boring but take notes AND get the notes on CD.
Nice guy and a good teacher. Save yourself some money and don't buy the book, just give him a blank CD and he gives you the notes for the year. I got a "C", but I missed a lot of classes, and I hardly ever studied.
Dr. VanKley is very clear in what he wants on the test. Refers to the book but gets his tests from lectures. Gives extra points for attendance. His class was very interesting--I learned alot. Would recommend him if you have to take botany.
This teacher is amazing, he explains everything very well and if you have any biology experince you should make at least a B, the only thing about this class that suxs is LAB!!!!
I agree with the Shaggy and the spastic comments. This professor has very easy tests as long as you study some. The lectures are boring, but hey, it is Biology (which is not for everyone). The lab(which he doesn't teach) is what is hard.
kinda weird but pretty easy
He is very, very boring. LEctures are dry & dull. He is a very plane Jane himself. Nothing to grap your attention. Drik coffee b4 class to try and stay up, attend reg. to get extra pop quize & attendance points
This teacher is ridiculous! He threw a table at the wall. The class itself is easy but the teacher makes you hate the class...easier than others but you will hate him
Do not take him, he will drive you nuts. He has awful manerisms. His class is easier and test are fair if you study, but he will make you hate biology.
I agree with the other comments that the class is fairly easy if you study. But this guy needs to learn to control his temper. He throw tantrums like a little kid. He gets mad very easily.
His class is easy just show up and study a little and you will definitely pass. He does have a temper and he acts like a little kid. Class is boring but rather easy. Dont buy the book get a cd for him to copy the notes on. Everthing is powerpoint presentation.
This guy is a closet case. LOTS of notes in this class but the lab was way harder. study everything on the powerpoint and youll do ok
She is a bad teacher.Iam surprised to see that type of teachers in USA.She has no knowledge of what she is teaching Grading is bad She is not fit for teaching or research. She cannot plan thesis project and till now she is lucky to have students who are intelligent and able to do without any support She is also lucky to have the job bcos of politics
It was a lot of work for a summer class. He gave us 126 plants to know by Family Genus and Species for lab. Don't take this class if you aren't good at memorizing names! Was really looking forward to this class, but now I wish I hadn't taken it. It would probably be better in the Spring, if he offers it. Not a bad teacher, but not very interesting.
Horrible teacher. He knows his info, but has problems teaching it. Tests are horible, everything is powerpoint, he has a nasty temper, and the whole Joe Dirt look distracts you from learning
I disagree with most of the other people. This is college! He is a very smart teacher and he knows his stuff! He gives a lot of notes, but the test follows straight from the notes. I haven't barely opened my book and I'm making an A. If you don't mind studying your notes, then take him!
I'm sorry but I have to disagree. Dr. VanKley does not have a temper. He has never displayed any of the behavor depicted here. He is an excellent prof and makes biology interesting. At least as much as it can be. :lol I would happily take the class over again.
This iis the most boring teacher that SFA could have picked for Bio. Although he knows what he is talking about, he offers very little if any outside help.Cant stand the guy or the class and i love biology. Tests are ok but hard to study for, the notes he gives arnt clear, and he goes over them to fast. When you ask him to go back, he wont. UHGG!
he knows everthing there is to know about biology but is unclear sometimes during his lecture,he's not helpfull outside the class either, the test are difficult because he doesn't specify exactly what to study, and yeah the joe dirt look doesn't help.
boring and monotone. But he tries to make jokes every now and then (just laugh neway) The test aren't too bad, but you have to study. Go to SI if you can. Will help to you outside of class if you ask him. Don't text message during his class. That's like his #1 pet peeve. Actually, don't even have your phone out.("it changes the slides." lol)
Actually an ok class if you study the notes. If you start to have problems copy the notes from the disk before class and listen while he lectures. SI helps a lot as well. Hates cell phones because it changes the projector!
His tests are kinda hard and cover very broad topics. He will make you a copy of the slideshow which is kind of helpful. No need to buy the book I never used it. He is also kinda moody, and will flip out if he hears a cell phone noise. But overall he knows his stuff.
has a mullet, but an easy class
A nice guy, decent teacher; the class (Botany), however, is infinitely hard -- unless you have a photographic memory and enjoy contemplating theoretical aspects of biology that have virtually no practical value in relation to life. The glossary showed over 1000 terms in the book; Vankley expects a COMPREHENSIVE final. Unless you're a sadist...
His tests are pretty hard, and long but usually take home. He is super nice and usually available for help. The mullet is hot! haha
never on time to class. keeps us late. has a mullet. grinds his teeth when cell phones ring, so turn it off. closes doors 3 minutes before class is over. always wears corduorys.
he gives you a copy of all lecture notes on cd (power point). Does hate cell phones. Tests really aren't that bad, matching, mult. choice. He gives lots of extra pts. for attendance, easy pop quizzes etc. Not tricky, just kinda boring...intro classes usually are, just get through it.
He is a good teacher but hard. All test material comes from the notes he gives you on power piont.
I took Dr. Vankley this summer (06) for local flora. It's an interesting class, you get alot of bonus points on the lab quizes. This class involves taking field trips during each lab period. it's was an enriching experience. Test questions are straight from notes. Study your notes and you will be fine i made an A.
This is my second time taking him...I failed him miserably last semester. This time, everything makes so much more sense, so I guess my failure is because of me. The SI is my savior though. He gives you all the powerpoints. Tests aren't too too bad. The final is questions taken from all previous tests. Test is matching and multiple choice.
Great Teacher, knows what hes talking about. Rather easy and enthusiastic about plants for sure. I took him for 435 as well, difficult, but it gave me a new appreciation for science as well. One of my favorite proffesors. Made an easy A in all his classes, if you dont like botany cant decide who to take surely take him!
He is a good professor and really knows what he is talking about. Extremely boring class but if you can get past that then you will do fine. I took him during summer 1 and I made a "C". You have to study for his test but if you just study all of the powerpoints you will do fine.I bought the book and I was happy I did!
dont get me wrong he is very smart in his area...which is botany or plants... and me? well i dont really enjoy learning about plant species and what not. He hates cell phones so DO NOT i repeat DO NOT! let yous ring in his class...
He is an okay professor. Don't let you cell phone ring in class though. He is pretty laid back and as long as you take notes and study he will pass you.
He is not a very good teacher. He says umm alot and he pretty much reads straight from the powerpoint. He adds bonus points to the tests if you have good attendance. At the end of the semester if you have a 78 or 79&you attended all the classes he will bump you up to an 80. Tests are okay. What he says in class is on the test. Never used the book.
go get the power point from him immediately, extra points for attendance, no HW, 4 tests from the powerpoint notes ...3 sections per test - AWESOME CLASS & AWESOME PROFESSOR he is eager to help so if u have any q's go to his office- i hope to get to take him again
Easy class, just study the power points and attend lectures. Be warned they are very boring but if you can stand it then take Van Kley! Also, dont walk out of class it irritates him more than cell phones.
Monotonous lectures. Says "Um" a LOT. He's a sympathetic character, seems cool, would probably have a helluva good time sitting around drinking a beer with him, just not a fan of his lecture style. Trade a blank disk for the entire semester's powerpoint slides--well worth it. If you study those, the tests are easy enough.
He is a great professor, kinda awkward. He's hilarious sometimes and knows a BUNCH about plants. His tests are all from the notes. You don't have to read the book to make A's! Buy the book for lab. Attend class for the bonus points he gives out on the tests for attendence and extra credit. Memorize the notes and you'll do fine. The are online (ppt)
Van Kley is a really sweet guy. He's pretty awkward so be prepared for that however. His tests are relatively easy ! Just memorize the powerpoints and focus plants and you have your A ! Also he gives out tons of bonus points ! (He sometimes gives hints on tests too !) Photosynthesis is difficult so study hard on that too ! Good luck !
Dr. Van-Kley is super easy!! Class was just like my AP Bio class in high school with a little more in-depth cover on few subjects. Pay attention in class, get the slides from him and it should be an easy A.
Lectures are boring, but he's a nice guy. Tests are not easy, but you can make an A if you put in some effort. Usually curves grades, too. Kind of an awkward speaker, but clearly very passionate about what he teaches and very fair. Overall I would definitely take him again.
Pretty boring lectures but I definitely reccomend going, although he puts his notes online he will mention things in lecture that arent on the power points. Tests arent the easitest but GO TO SI!!!! SI was my best friend for this course. And actually try, its not hard to pull off a B in this course.
He was an... okay instructor. Very monotonous. The test were super specific. You basically have to know everything. But he is passable. You just have to work for it quite a bit.
Really cool and nice as a person and as a teacher he is fairly easy. The textbook is almost not necessary. Study power points which are on his website and pay attention in class and you will have the material to make an A
He definitely knows his science, and he is very excited about teaching it. Make sure your phone is put away during tests or reviewing over a test. His tests are pretty straight-forward, and you can almost find the answers to a problematic question by reading ahead. I never used my book. He takes directly from the powerpoint notes.
He talks WAY to fast. He clearly knows his stuff but talks loudly off topic, then mumbles the important stuff. The SI is great. He makes class much more bearable.
I LOVED him as a teacher. If you have an problems he will gladly help you in any way he can. He goes off powerpoints which you can print and follow along. He is very interested in what he is teaching. I'm taking another one of his classes. GREAT teacher!
Van Kley is a guy who knows his stuff. He is really nice but I have a hard time paying attention in class. All of his notes are online to print off and I haven't used the book so I returned it. If he doesn't mention it in lecture it won't be on the test. GO TO SI. That's the main reason I am doing well in that class. Study the notes and go to SI.
He posts his powerpoint online which is a bonus and negative. Lots of material to cover makes it difficult to study for his 4 exams, but its bio. Keep diligent notes, attend class for retention purposes, and attend SI's and you should come out with at least a B. Don't let his long hair scare you. He is incredibly passionate about his subjects.
The tests are pretty hard but he grades on curves and provides quizzes that add extra-credit to your test grade. He's also unintentionally funny.
Easy to pass as long as you pay attention in class. He does posts slides online, but unless you have thorough biology background, paying attention in class will save you. Review slides for exams. Go to office hours - he will help you and he wants you to make a good grade. I barely made a C because I didn't care until the end of the semester.
Take notes and listen to his lectures in class, yes the notes are online but he points out important things during class, the tests are easy as long as you study and go to each lecture. All in all a great teacher, class was really fun!
Tests are easy, straight from lecture PowerPoints. Easy to work with for honors credit. Easy to get an A in the class as long as you study for tests. Loved this class
He's good, Fun. Tests are ridiculously easy. Literally just read through and know the review and you'll get 100.
I had a difficult time taking this course because he was very unorganized and had a hard time presenting a lecture. He is a cool and interesting professor but he has a rough time going over the material clearly
Unorganized, mumbles, says "uh-um" in nearly every sentence sometimes more than once. Not good with tech! Grades: not many assignments, but they too are unorganized. He isn't clear on instructions and throws in things that aren't relevant to the assignment at all.
He's very enthusiastic about the subject but lectures can feel really long at times. Go to SI, it REALLY helps. Very straightforward with information and grading criteria, just go to class and pay attention.
You only need the book for lab. I highly recommend going to SI, because he will add some extra credit. I also recommend going to quizlet for Bio131 vocab words for his exams, as his reviews are extremely broad. for the final, you're actually taking 2 exams. one is Exam 4, and only consists of that material. and the other is cumulative
Professor Van Kley is lecture heavy, but has all his lecture power points online. I found it very beneficial to study the power points, than studying the textgbook. His test were pretty easy with them only consisting of matching and multiple choice. If you want to do good, go to SI.
He's a nice guy but don't take his class if you struggle with science. I told him that I would be needing a lot of help in the class and all he said was to attend his SI which he cancelled and never had. Your grade is based solely off the tests but does give a few bonus points. He his very awkward when speaking and mumbles while holding himself.
Dr. Van Kley is an interesting dude. Pay attention and take good notes, and you will pass. Go to the S.I. or tutoring at the AARC, you will do very well. Botany just takes a little extra effort to grasp sometimes. This class is helpful if you take Dendrology or Local Flora later on.
He only goes off powerpoints, but if you take notes and study the tests are really easy.
Insanely lecture heavy. All classes are pretty much powerpoints. I recommend going to SI and review as much as possible. The only grades in this class are test, so do your best in all of them! Overall, as long as you know the information well, you'll be good. He provides a study guide that has all the general topics, but small details matter too!
Van Kley is a very interesting professor. He truly cares about his subject but has some difficulty fetting it across and almost gets nervous. He suggested getting the book but you really will be fine from the powerpoint slides and quizlets. attendance is counted by a sign in sheet which is extra credit, each test gets some form of extra credit, too
Tests are straight from the slides.
Loved his class, exam material comes from the powerpoint presentations which are available on D2L. Exams are all multiple choice, matching, etc. Vocab and plant anatomy is very important, make sure you study the focus plants. Gives extra credit for class attendance. He adapted SO WELL to the online shift due to COVID-19.
Van Kley is a very easy professor all you have to do is watch the lecture/do the quizzes/go over the power points and quizzes before the test. He gives extra credit if you go to the SI as well so I recommend that.
Goofy, and posts all of his lecture slides on d2l. Also all his exams and quizzes are open resource
Great professor, passionate about the subject and genuinely wants his students to do well in the class. Attendance to both lab and lecture is mandatory, attendance is taken, but coursework is fairly light. No homework other than open-note quizzes and unfinished lab worksheets. Almost no work outside of time spent in lab.
He is very passionate about plants, which makes for a great professor. He was happy to answer questions and help out in the lab if you were to have trouble. I took his 9 am botany course that he was almost always late to. The lecture powerpoints were quite long but fairly easy to follow. Exams were open note, but would recommend studying!
Most of the quizzes are available on quizlet. All the tests are open note and online. There is no reason to fail his class. You can learn if you want to, or not. The SI for him is very helpful too.
Has a textbook for class but isn't needed and is free. Easy prof, exams and quizzes are taken online and are open-note. He does have you sign in every class for attendence and uses it as a grade at end of semester. Lectures aren't very interesting or interactive, but he's passionate about the material. Easy class to take for core science
(Plant Form & Function) Van Kley is kind, approachable, and passionate about the material but scatterbrained and hard to follow. Exams are relatively easy: open note and similar to the practice quizzes. Easy A/B if you show up and do the work, but not the best for actually gaining a deep understanding of the material. You do NOT need the textbook
He is very passionate about plants and the things he teaches and works well with students. His lectures are a lot but as long as you take notes and study them you should do well. Take use of the cheat sheet he allows for exams. Go to labs and lectures for attendance grade. Super nice and fun to talk to.
