He's great, want an eas A? take his class
Yes, his class is easy because he's not that interested in what you do. He doesn't read the 9-page paper you work so hard to do. Also, his politics are so partisan you could never get an intelligent, professional answer. He berates students who oppose his views, telling them to "drop the course."

Dr. Falkin can be very hard if you are not a Poli Sci major, but if you are he is very helpful and his classes are informative and entertaining. He truly wants his students to get a good grade and actually learn something.
He is not the easiest professor but he does work with the students in terms of passing his class. The class is very informative but like a lot of classes you have to study hard. He does have a sense of humor but he's very blunt. If you are over sensitive don't take him.
Awesome professor. He always takes the time out to help his students when ever they are having trouble.
very funny professor. a lot of work, but worth the effort. love it when he speaks chinese. =P
Dont take his class if your not a POL SCI major- He expects alot out of you, is very hard to keep awake in class. Talks alot and makes your write alot on test. doesnt go over things very clear, expects you to just know everything he knows
I didn't find him helpful or unferstanding. I missed class when I was in the hospital and he made me take the midterm the day after I got out. He favors students in his class, esp. if u had him in a prior class.
Very cool professor will always go over anything you dont understand. He is very interesting to listen to and really knows what he talking about. Just tell him your a giant or ranger fan and you will pass.=]
easygoing manner...if you want an A, go to class!, ask questions!, read the book!. thats it!
Falkin is probably one of the best teachers at CSI. He knows what he's talking about, and really tries to let you know what hes talking about, too. All you have to do is show up to his class on time, turn your cell phone off, participate, and explain everything on the essay as if you were teaching him. If you can do that, he's the easiest prof.
Great professor. Learned a lot about world politics. Funny guy too - you'll never be bored.
very nastyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
he is a GREAT prof. Talk a lot, but just for that, u wont get bored in his class. explains everything, and makes the class pass by very fast. He explains the subject as if it was a story. Jokes around lots of time. As long as u could take good notes, remember them for the exams, thats all u will need! i didnt even open the text book. all from notes
dr. falkin is a true breath of fresh academic air. he is brilliant, politically uncorrect, hilarious, brace yourself for over the top, sarcastic humor. he's incredibly passionate & has such an amazing understanding of politics, history, economics - you will learn tons and laugh your ass off; don't misunderstand his easy-going-he expects respect
He's unique, very interesting and explains anything you ask. You have to study your notes and read when he stresses it. It's not an easy course - but definitely one that'll enlighten you tremendously about Eastern Asia.
Falkin is a tough, but fair professor. You HAVE to study and ask questions if you don't understand the topic.
he is the man
i have him for comparative politics. he is an amazing professor!!! what ever he talks about in class, however boring it may be normally, he makes it interesting. he loves when people ask questions, he really really gets excited. the only thing about his class that i don't like are his tests, they are always esseys. they seem fair but hard.
A brilliant man. He really knows his stuff, and explains it in a way you can grasp it. If you don't understand, he will slow down and make sure you understand it. He jokes around and tries to make it as interesting as he can. He tells you exactly what he wants on the essays, but you have to show him you know it. He's a tough but fair grader.
such a good professor! i had absolutely no interest in political science and i must say he frightened me in the beginning, but he is a great teacher. course material was very clear- anything confusing he explained thoroughly. tests very straightfoward. made class fun. ill miss him. =(
He is the best prof. i ever had. HE explains everything, and if you take notes and study you'll be fine. Pay attention and you'll get a good grade. He is mad funny.
Great professor, really knows and loves his stuff, knows his stuff.
Excellent teacher. You will learn the course material an also current events and how they relate politically. Take his class if you get the chance!
Absolutely the(e) most animated, knowledgable, interesting, course I've ever attended throughout my career as a student. He resembles an actor on stage who provides a complete and accurate understanding of the play at hand. Absolutely marvelous. Can't wait to attend his next play.
One of the best Professors at CSI. He WILL scare you in the beginning, he WILL make it seem like he wants you to drop. You don't have to go to every class, but you're screwed for tests if you don't. Don't take his class if you can't write an essay. Crystal clear, engaging, helpful, interesting. Amazingly passionate about what he knows.
Absolutely Looney Tunes, but very fun!
By far the BEST professor I've had!! Not an easy course, but he's very detailed and LOVES it when you ask questions, you'll walk out with a much better understanding of world politics. You must attend, take lots of notes, read the articles assigned, submit a well written essay for the exams and you will do well. Thanks to him I know have great int
Tough but the best professor at CSI! Love him.
Just sit in the front and take good notes, and you'll do well on the tests. If you don't care about the subject, you'll have a hard time.
great teacher cares about you learning and very helpful my mother passed away during semister and he was very accommodating helped me alot wish more teachers were like him. gives 3 test just take good notes and read and your be fine took him for everything already(pol theorey,240,260,342,int100) or i would take him again defintly recommend
very good professor. one of the few teachers ive met that doesnt teach their opinion but teaches facts and allows students to decide their own opinion about it. cares about his students. fun guy. encourages his students to ask questions which makes the students get involved in class, everyone talks and it makes class more interesting and fun.
Really eccentric. Really Hard Class. Tests were unexpectedly difficult. Really incoherent notes, he would just scribble all over the board and draw little stick figures. Talked really fast also. WONT LET YOU SLACK OFF, GOOD TEACHER...
Definitely recommended. Hard materials but is very helpful. He is aware if you are a hard worker. He makes the class interesting with his outgoing personality. Wish I had his class again!
VERY OUTGOING PERSONALITY. BUT HIS TEACHING SKILLS SUCK! YOU HAVE TO TAKE NOTES BASED ON HIS LECTURES, BUT NOT ONLY DOES HE TALK SO FAST BUT HE JUMPS SUBJECTS TOO MUCH! GOOD LUCK UNDERSTANDING HIS NOTES....TIC TAC TOE..STICK FIGURES AND LINES! HES VERY INTERESTING PERSON BY FAR, AND HE GRADES PRETTY EASY!
Horrible, rude, laughs in you're face when discussing problems you're having with a class. I really dislike this man. Do not take his class.
If youre a poli sci major & have interest in the subject take him hes absolutely brilliant and youll love his lectures...however if youre not you will find it hard and be boredd...one of the best poli sci teachers in that school you will learn alot if you want to
Very full of himself, only respects the students he knows. Discourages opinions that don't coincide with his own, making for a very hostile learning environment. Hypocritical and detestable. He is a very smart man, but must have ADD. Does not maintain a constant perspective on the subject matter. Do not take this professor.
Amazing professor; had him for POL240 and INT100. Will give you 110% if you ask for help with anything, all you have to remember are certain things for exams, which he tells you beforehand. Most students don't like him because he's blunt and doesn't try to baby you. Highly recommended if you're into political science.
Don't listen to the bad comments, they are just from student's who don't understand that good grades come from hard work. ONE OF THE MOST AMAZING PROFESSOR'S I have ever had. Yes, he is opinionated but he is often right and he is an excellent professor and he truly does care about his students as long as you are respectful! HIGHLY recommended!
I truly believe this professor should stop teaching immediately. He never finishes a sentence! He actualley wrote to me that my paper was awful and requested that I drop the class. A professor should'nt constantly be stating in class that he believes the class should drop. Maybe if this individual learned how to finish a sentence correctly...
He is very nice and funny will ask you a million times if you understand everything. he runs you around in circles when he talks and he also runs around the classroom, but as long as you read what he tells you to read you will be fine. if your on the line about a teacher take james falkin.
I was not a big fan of this subject before Professor Falkin. His lectures, however, were so interesting (if you give it a shot and pay attention like a good student) that I really developed a liking to it! He is a fair grader but accepts no nonsense. Please read the assignments he gives in class. They are relatively short and the key to an "A!"
THE BEST PROFESSOR IN THE HISTORY OF MY COLLEGE CAREER! I absolutely had a wonderful time in his class each and every single day. A bit intimidating at first, but as long as you pay attention and do your work as every student should, you'll be fine. Tests are taken directly from class discussions...so TAKE NOTES!!!
i had never taken a political science class ever when i took this class. he was very helpful, straightforward, and easy. 3 papers, and i got an A.
great professor
Great professor. I just took his final today. Great professor! It's a pleasure being in his class. He knows what he's teaching and he explains things in detail. His tests are from the reading and class notes. Take him if you're interested in learning Political Science.
He is a great professor. Really nice and helpful. He knows what hes talking about. Come to class take notes and do the readings and youll get a good grade. Hes the best.
Great prof! very funny. he always asks if everyone understands which is nice. Take ALOT of notes and read the chapters because that is whats on the test. No review sheets but on review day you can go and ask him questions on things your not sure of. If you get the chance then you should deff take him.
Attendance is not required, he does not take it. he does teach during lectures, but does not give any notes. he will answer all of your questions and if u ask to slow down or repeat he will. his tests are strictly from the readings in the book so you must buy the book and you must read a lot if you want to do well. he will work with you not to fail
He doesn't take attendance and doesn't mind if you don't participate or leave early. He gives 3 tests and sometimes he curves. Tests are easy if you read because everything is either quotes, multiple choice or t/f. He hates grading essays. Good professor but he could be very strict: don't even think about texting or stepping out during his class.
Personally, I don't have much interest in the subject, most people enjoyed his class. If you're new to the college life like myself, I would save this class for a latter semester. However, he is lenient on grading.
One of the best professor's at CSI. Amazing guy, so knowledgeable. As long as you are respectful and interested in the subject matter you will do well. He is not only a great professor for Political Science but very inspiring and a great role model for all his students to become successful and achieve their goals. Highly recommended.
He's a great professor. Very intellectual and shares stories of his life that correlate with the lessons. Half of the exams are from the text. He doesn't require you going to class but you should because the other half of the exams are based on his classnotes that you won't find in the text. Doesn't give Ds, which I was supposed to get but got a C.
He is a very sarcastic funny prof. Don't disrespect him by texting or leaving the classroom. Will work with you
Outstanding professor...respectful, knowledgeable, clear, very fair, no favorites in class...I learned an enormous amount... ..Excellent at helping to delineate the core beliefs of the philosophers and how they related to government...What higher ed is all about!
Wonderful experience...I told Professor Falkin I did not read the texts and he was rightfully unhappy, but did not hold a grudge...I then read the philosophers.. and I did well.Trying to take another class with Professor Falkin! He is VERY fair, straightforward about his tests...doesn't overburden you with homework, papers. Super class!
AMAZING professor! He's intelligent, animated, and a great teacher. He wants to make the material as clear as possible and gets really excited when people ask questions. Participation is not mandatory though. Keep up with the readings! His tests aren't bad. He's very funny too. Would definitely take him again.
Professor Flakin is brilliant.Took his class during summer. Was one of my best class. He's very knowledgeable, helpful and his lectures are very clear, you don't really need the text book.Study his notes and you will be fine. If you ever get the chance take his class, you will not regret it.
This course was interesting and relevant to current topics. We covered a lot of material and there was few assignments. 3-4 papers over the entire professor
I've taken a few classes with Professor Falkin. He is very knowledgeable, and interested in the topics he teaches. He will usually use the book for the majority of test questions along with a few things discussed in class. Will usually dictate and occasionally go off on tangents. Fantastic Professor in my opinion. Keeps it interesting.
no matter what my grade will be I think prof falkin is a wonderful professor. subject matter is explaned in a comprehensible way and he is a great person. YOU MUST TAKE NOTES AND READ
great professor and truly a nice person. helpful, interesting, and professional. would gladly take him again. one of CSI's finest. that said pay close attention in class and read what he tells you too. course material is better suited for second year and above. 3 exams. t/f and multiple . no papers
Three home take five page papers. No HWs, no quizzes, attendance is mandatory.
I was dreading this class until i actually went and its probably the most interesting class i've ever been in. i learn something new every week. no attendance. always out early. he knows exactly what hes talking about. be prepared to take notes, he never writes on the board. good sense of humor and always willing to help.
Animated Professor who loves his job. He speaks fast and gets excited when he teaches. If it's your first time taking him, it will take you about a week to get use to him, but everyone is different, I got him right away, and others never got him. He knows his stuff and has a great memory.
GREAT professor, animated and intellectual. Talks fast, but you get used to him. If not he's not for you and he will tell you to drop. dont fall for his "drop my class speech." He doesn't like to teach big classes, if the class is big, you will get multiple choice which is not easy, if it's small you will get essays sometimes take home essays.
CONS: Attendance AND paying attention IS always mandatory, he has clearly defined political views (right-wing, pro-Israeli), very high ego, his tests are tricky (usually multiple choice and true or false OR three 5-6 pg. essays), don't try to piss him off.. PROS: You will learn, no HWs quizzes, more people sign up for his class, less work...
Meandering and hollow lectures make his class a chore, not to mention distractions like students trying and failing to leave an impression on a professor who is routinely negative towards them. Attendance is neither recorded nor enforced, but public shaming is. Has his charms but should be the animus for the MTA cutting the X10 service line.
Great professor knows the material extremely well. This is definitely a college level course, you must pay attention and try to write down what he lectures about since he doesn't use the chalk board often. But no worries he explains things at nauseam. The best thing to do is ask him questions. Pretty easy grader. I highly recommend him. No txt book
Best Professor at CSI! class act!
He is the best of all. I love political science because of the way he taught it. Take him, you won't regret it.
I'm having a horrible time in his class. He's interesting and the material is, too. He's nice. HOWEVER, he is incredibly DISORGANIZED & he DOES NOT follow the syllabus! He also doesn't stop pacing & he's all over the place. It gives me anxiety. If you need organization or to follow a syllabus, don't take his class. His tests are take home papers.
Here's the thing. He teaches poli sci 240 and 103 in the winter and summer. He may be tough in the fall and the spring in other classes but he is very very lenient in summer and winter for 240 and 103. I took him for 240 over the summer. He talks fast so you have to pay attention to take notes cause his tests were straight forward from the notes.
I think Prof Falkin is brilliant, but his class is tough. He talks fast and doesn't use the board often, so it can be difficult to keep up with him. His exams are fair (true/false and multiple choice) but you MUST do the readings and take good notes if you want to do well. Take his class seriously because he WILL tell you to drop if you don't.
Extremely passionate, very very engaging, DO NOT BE LATE TO CLASS. Knows this stuff like the back of his hand which makes it great because you can explore ideas with him. He's definitely one of those golden gems at Csi. Took him 4 times, and it gets better and better. Awesome teacher, and how he teaches is a work of art. YOU MUST ENGAGE to do well.
An absolutely AMAZING teacher, take his class, or regret it for the rest of your life! He is very passionate about the subject, he teaches extremely well. If POL is not your Major then definitely take him during the summer as I hear that his summer courses are much easier than during a regular semester.
He doesnt assign books but puts readings on blackboard. Hes a great professor i took him 7 tines and if u do you wont regret it. Hes very knowledgeable and doesnt write on the board but his lectures are superb.
Professor Falkin is THE BEST in the department. Very passionate, his lectures are AMAZING. at the beginning you will be lost, since he doesn't write on the board, however, you will get used to his way of teaching. if you want to learn, he is really the one to take. Ask him any question on the topic, you will get an answer.I took him 4 times.
It is a pleasure to have him as a professor. He is very kind and knows the subject extremely well and his lectures are amazing!!!! His teaching style can be different but you get used to it.
Awesome professor, he forces you to pay attention in his class by being so energetic, knows his stuff, and will help grade in your favor if you participate
Falkin is the best professor at CSI. He knows his material so well teaches off the top of his head. I will take him again because if u take his classes you will learn unlike other professors that u cant learn in their classes.
Falkin is a great teacher and by taking his class i learned a lot that hard work in academia pays off. He knows his material so well its amazing.
He's the best professor to take if political science is your major you won't regret it.
He's the best professor that csi has. It's seen in the way he teaches. When you take his class you will end it learning alot.
The best professor to take if you love learning and thinking because he doesnt write on the board so you need good note taking skills or make friends and share notes.
Falkin is a good guy cares about the sucess of his students.
He is am amazing prof.!! Take him when you get a chance. leacturs are interesting and wont be bored in the class. Really recommend taking him in the winter or summer! its always a hybrid class but you wont regret it.
Professor Falkin is truly the best in the department. A must take if you are interested in political theory.
On a more serious note, he's one of a kind in that his teaching method differs from that of his peers. You must come prepared; he TALKS, so listen attentively. As to theory, he has a way of vicariously living through the individual who propounded them; he magically becomes the theorist! Uber-passionate;With a concerted effort, surely, you'll learn.
Just rambles nonsense in class. does a poor job of actually teaching and males you responsible for work he doesn't cover.
take notes from his lectures, read the readings, and you'll do fine on the exams!
Professor Falkin is extremely intelligent and is very passionate about what he teaches, he does not do power points and all of his lectures are oral! Attendance wasn't a big deal, but if you missed a class you lost a whole chunk of the subject matter. He's really fun and will answer any questions you have! Do the readings and take notes!!!
Such a great professor I took him for pol 202 I passed with a good grade one thing with him though is he likes small classroom sizes but such a caring and inspirational professor I would take him again 100%
The best professor. He does not tolerate any nonsense and prefers a smaller amount of students so it is easier for all of us. He doesn't use powerpoint so if you can't take notes and listen then you will not do well.
AMAZiNG PROFESSOR! Pay attention and takes notes and you will pass. Very clear on grading criteria, respectful and understanding. Loved this professfor.
all of you who gave him amazing reviews lied to me. idk if it was because we were online this semester but his class was so difficult, and i took it as an elective! we only had 3 tests to do but the way the were worded was so hard to understand, same thing with his notes. maybe he teaches better in person idk
Even in an online class his lectures are all oral, however the reading is important to understand the exam questions he will ask. 3 MC tests that were fairly straightforward if you read. Take this class with an open mind and I feel you could learn a lot.
BEWARE. Worst professor I've ever taken & I've taken many. Took two of his classes in one semester. No notes, he only talks. Positive ratings are probably written by those who love to be challenged beyond what one can bear. I was a senior & the first day of class he made me stay behind just to tell me that only people with a 4.0 GPA pass his class.
Grade based on three tests from pre-recorded lectures that are hard to hear and understand. ALOT of reading from things you are provided with or have to find on the internet. Challenging tests. Does not reply to emails, and has a doesn't care attitude. Unless you like philosophy and understand it fully, I do not recommend it.
Never reads or reply to emails. All he leave are audio recordings and written lectures. When you sit and listen through 40 minute lectures you really start to realize his voice is so annoying. His class is very easy just three exams but if you miss one you might as well drop the class because he really does not care and will fail you.
Falkin is hard. Long, incoherent lectures. Doesn't respond to emails. Graded by three 25 question multiple choice tests. No extra credit or leniency. Lots of reading with terrible explanations. Doesn't respond to emails. Doesn't care if you 're confused. Only take if you're super interested in politics and have a lot of time.
super straight forward class. Professor tells you what he expects straight up front, no exceptions, which I respect. He knows his topic very well and you can tell he's really into his subject through his lectures.Grade was determined by three major tests, do your reading and this class will go smooth.
This class is only 3 tests so you could totally ignore it for a month and then study the week before a test. He's very passionate about his subject and a good orator. I think you could learn a lot in this class.
I had home strictly online, no zooms or any meeting. At first he was answering my emails then he backed off. I wouldn't say the class is hard at all he just went MIA for a minute. I'd take his class again
Only 3 tests the entire semester with no other assignments, so as long as you study for these tests that are taken about once a month you should do pretty well.
Most of the reviews are good, which is why I took him. But, that may only apply for In Person. His material had many errors making it hard/confusing at times. There's only 3 tests, so if you do bad on one it really takes a toll on the grade. Also you MUST read the material - not a complaint. It's the only way to pass. Def a time consuming class.
Professor Falkin is easily one of my favorite professors. He is witty, he is intelligent, & he is an excellent lecturer. You can sense the passion James Falkin has for the world of Political Science. Sure, he talks a lot but it's all relevant information. There are three multiple choice tests which is more than fair.
I've had Falkin for several of his classes. His grading criteria is very clear: 3 exams throughout the semester. As long as you pay attention to his lessons or the readings, you will be good. His in person lessons can be pretty informative and interesting too. I would suggest taking his class to learn more about the nature of politics.
Prof. Falkin is unique - lectures are all oral, no slides. Attendance is a must to keep up. Readings are key for the straightforward exams. StuckstudeAI was a lifesaver for review prep. Overall, an engaging class if you're willing to put in the work.
Nice guy, old school, does not write anything on the board and everything is off script. The material for this class as well as his teaching style makes it very hard. Very very philosophical.
Caring, respectful, grades based on readings and 3 tests. It is a read-needed class but overall not a bad class and he puts it all in your plate to pass. Would take him again.
Professor Falkin is engaging, clear, and genuinely cares about students. His passion for teaching makes complex ideas easy to understand and the class truly enjoyable. Professor Falkin is also a Knicks and Mets fan as well!
By far the best professor in this department. Lectures are great, & he is very unbiased-- he will not give his opinion, & he does not want to hear yours either. Does not respond to email, but is always willing to answer questions after class or set a meeting. I loved this class & felt that I got a lot out of it. Would def recommend taking him!
