Very entertaining class.
You must take VIVARIN to STAY AWAKE, and he insulted my truck, HOW RUDE!!
Sometimes boring, sometimes pretty funny. Tests are impossible, but he gives HUGE curve.
Hey, for all those out there who are whinning about how hard he is, try studying! Cool guy, 42ish but looks 18, how funny is that. Nice out look on life.
Awesome! He's very knowledgable and actually makes philosophy interesting (at least as interesting as it can be).
He lets you sleep in class. Come on you've got to take him.
He's a lively teacher and makes it interesting. If you have a chance take him. As long as you do your bluebook you'll do fine. The tests are impossible but he does curve.
STAY AWAY!!!! Class makes no sense and if you do take him don't wear any Greek letters
If you pay attention and do your blue books, the tests aren't that difficult. He tells funny stories.
Very interesting teacher. Tests ARE hard, but the curve really helps. Also willing to help if you just ask.
His class was very interesting in my opinion. I enjoyed his lectures because they were quite humorous. His tests are not that bad, but you have to study and read through the chapters because he doesn't really give notes. Just listen.
ethics issues are controversial...he makes his opinion clear and then bias shows through. doesn't give other opinions a fair chance.
the class is kind of hard but he makes it interesting. always jokes around and makes class fun. cool person
Very knowledgable teacher. Keeps you interested in the material. Tests are fair. Good sense of humor. Very opinionated, defends his points very well, and is very receptive to discussion with students. Quick to jump on faulty arguements, but that's his job
He is a funny guy, very sarcastic. His tests are hard though, but you get a curve. My advice would just be to STUDY.
great guy, hates the frat boys...tests are hard but only to make sure the frat boys don't cheat..you will get a curve. and trust me, if someone makes a 100 without the curve, there's hell to pay
horrible teacher and unclear course
Tests weren't so bad. Come to class, and pay attention, and with the curve you should do fine.
good teacher, but he does let his bias show on the various issues (but college breeds liberalism so most of them do) the tests are not too bad if you do the blue book. You really dont have to do great just do well and you'll get an A
Very easy, you shouldn't even need the curve. He lectures straight from the book, so if you werent paying much attention one day you could always read the chapter to catch up. HOW DO PEOPLE FAIL THIS CLASS? Tests are easy, just read the chapters.
Very interesting, comical professor. Highly recommended. Not an easy A, but if you pay attention in class and read, you'll do well.
He's fun to listen to; but he grades according to how you do compared to others, so beware of his different grading style. It can be helpful or harmful depending on how everyone else does.
Pay attention in class. Grades on curve. YOur grade is compared to everyone that is taking the course...not just your class.
He's probably the easiest Philosophy teacher, and he talks about very interesting topics in class (abortion, sexual morality, etc.). He's suspicious of pretty much all of his students.
His tests aren't that bad. Just study the notes and arguments in the book and you should do fine. He also grades on a curve that can only help you.
Get ready for for sarcasm occasionally leaning into sardonic humor. You will either like his approach or you will not....no in between. In my opinion he did very well considering the magnitude of controversy surrounding such topics. I bet you are thinking he made me write this. Maybe so.. ;)
easiest class I've ever had, the least amount of work (3 homework assignments that you can do during class), barely studied but got an A
He is a great teacher. He knows his material well, and teaches it well. I learned much from his course. He is probably the most intelligent person I've ever met, and an admirable professor.
A stoic if I've ever seen one. Very helpful, easy in some classes, don't ****him off though.
This is the easiest Phil teacher. Make sure that you study for his tests. Dresses crazy and asks werid questions.
This is a truly crazy teacher. Dr. Fieser thinks everyone in his class is cheating on attendance! If you skip your classes a lot, then this is not the class for you. His class is far from boring, especially during roll call. LOL If you study for tests then you should get an A or B.
Says that classroom discussion is crucial but does not encourage it at all. He says "anyone? anyone?" for about 1.5 seconds before moving on. His appearance is disheveled at best, and he could use a trip to the Gap, but he's a good guy. Just do the study ?s and come to class. Mostly common sense.
Jim is a great teacher, but I had him a long time ago. He is very knowledgable about his subjects and very much interested in class discussion.
Subject matter: boring; as a teacher: crazy and interesting. Take his class and speak up. Make a name for yourself and you'll pass. I was Stock [Market] Boy.
An excellent teacher. Anyone who disagrees will have there homes and families laid to waste, with nothing but embers and meaty chunks left behind. This is Jim, by the way. Just in case you thought someone was joking about the laying to waste and stuff. I'll do it. And thanks to this Advanced Ethics class, I'll morally justify it. I DO in fact will it as a Maxim that anyone who disagrees with me on this have all the afformentioned bad stuff happen.
Great teacher and a great guy. Most interesting class ive had in college. It may seem like it will be hard to study for the test, but go over the notes and read the book, and the test will come straight from those. He makes the class fun, and even though it may not seem like it a first, youll actually learn something. Take him if you can.
Funny and interesting
A great professor. He's intelligent, and knowledgeable. Study the book well for tests.
NIce guy, funny
Awsome professor!Religiously takes attendance, but understands when you have a valid excuse. He expects students to pay attention and not work on other subjects while in his classroom, which is not too much to ask.He is funny. He dosn't give a lot of work.He speaks about very interesting subjects, and respects his students points of view. Take him!
He is a great professor but he will not be teaching ethics after this semester. I guess certain types of students were too much for his nerves.
Make sure to study, but not really hard!
He is alright I guess. He has a weird sense of humor. His class is not easy. You really have to work for your grade.
Took over the internet. Wayyyyy too much work to keep up with all of it. The most amount of work I have had in any online class.
I took PHIL160 with Fieser and loved it. He is hilarious and really enjoys his job. Take this class, just read what your suppose to and remember the 'presented arguments' in the book, the test are multiple choice usually 50 questions, you don't have to take notes, just read.. and the reading is most of the time interesting.. Great Class.
Just attend class and do the homework and you'll probably do well. His assignments can be done in minutes. Only one paper over the whole semester. All three exams were a bunch of T/F questions. Very cool approach to teaching upper division and very unique character. I really enjoyed it.
The teacher himself is funny and really nice but the class is just horrible. He tries to make everyone understand but Philosophy to me is just too hard. Its so confusing! It had nothing to do with the teacher, he was really cool, it was just the class that sucked.
He is very funny and interesting when he lectures. Makes students feel at ease.
I took him for 160. He can be funny if he is in a good mood. He has hard test, and has no interest in what you really have to say.
I think he offends some Christian sensibilities though that is not his intent. As an agnostic he's great, and very hilarious! He genuinely cares about the students, but he won't be taken advantage of. The content is very clear, especially if you read the book. Content is relevant to forming one's opinions about the world. Sarcastic and very funny.
I had to drop the class. He gives 6 days to miss, but I had a death in the family and had to use all of them and he wouldn't take a doctor's note. He tries to be funny, but doesn't exactly lecture. You may as well read your notes over and over.
Very hard tests!!! He teaches you how to read because he reads from the outline instead of lecturing. I had to have my friend teach me the material before all of the tests in order to pass. However, he does allow 15 minutes of sleep time in class so sit in the back. He is also strict on class behavior.
I took his online course. Homework is quite easy, but tests are extremely hard. They are all true/false, which are tricky to begin with. Plus, you only have 15 minutes to answer 20 questions. You have got to know the material backwards and forwards before taking his tests. Never met him, but seems like a very nice guy.
I found him very interesting and funny. He knows what he's talking about and has a huge passion for philosophy. No book required, 3 tests throughout semester, and homework due on each test day. Allowed 6 missed days.
Smartest professor I have ever had! Best one too boot. Take him it is fun and easy. There are three tests and the final is one of them but it is not comprensive. You turn in three 15-20 questions at test time. Make sure you take him if you can!!!!!!!!
he is kind of crazy but funny. if you care about your religion and will be sensitive DO NOT TAKE! ha....oh and this is a very hard class to take if you do not like to study
Took online, nice guy, helpful-no text needed (online book),provided class layout early on, graded on discussons, quiz, & hw for each section. Quizzes timed (15min x 20 ?s) all T/F. Quizzes rather challenging, most pts will come from hw & discussion postings. I recommned him if taking online (compared to other posting per classroom settings).
Best teacher I've ever had...hands down
This class wasn't too bad. He's a very intelligent person who delivers the material in an easily comprehensible way. I didn't like his sarcasm very much, but his class wasn't unbearable. The tests aren't hard as long as you really study for them and read the online book material.
One of the best professors I've had.
Great teacher. I definitely recommend him. You have to work hard, but the class is very interesting.
Philosophy is a controversial topic and listening to his sometimes warped views and opinions can get annoying & his sarcasm too but you can tell he is very intelligent and if ur looking for a class with not alot of work take him. theres just homework questions that arent bad and tests which u REALLY hav to study for but an A is possible.
One of the best teachers I've ever had. Probably the most intelligent person on campus.
Do the reading and questions. Go to class and participate, because it will help you retain the material. Study for the tests the best you can- he even gives you advice on how to study for his tests in the online texts his classes use! No outside text necessary :)
Great Teacher. You will not be given an A, but if you are an average student and study...you will do fine! He is very interesting and makes class fun. My favorite class this past semester.
I took this ethics class, about the same as 160, online, & it was great! No book needed, just be able to write intelligently about your opinions and you'll be fine. Lays everything out at the beginning of the semester, so you can plan accordingly. My mom also took this class with him, we both breezed through with A's. really nice guy, great class!
Good professor. Really funny guy and he makes class interesting. Just go to class and try. Grades don`t make themselves.
Mr. Fieser is really cool. He is laid back about everything. All you really have to do in this class is show up and listen to the lecture. You have to do questions from the online textbook and turn them in on exam days, but the way that he grades is pretty cool.
Dr. Fieser is a unique person. The tests are difficult, and the lecture is DRY. He curves every test because most people have a hard time with them, but if you go to almost every class you will do fine. Absences have a major affect on your grade!
Dr. Fieser is one of the most interesting professors that I have ever had. He wrote the book and gives you access to it electronically, free of charge! He is a brilliant and interesting man. Lecture is only interesting sometimes--- listen--- show up! Do not miss! On average, everyone fails the test. You have to KNOW the stuff. Very hard class...
I was skeptical about this class at first, but it turned out to be one of the most interesting classes I've ever taken. This class doesn't require a textbook, as the material is online. Fieser definitely requires you to study, but there is not too much material to read. You must be productive, do the work, and you'll be fine.
He's super funny and interesting. His class is one of my favorites
Professor Fieser is a pretty good teacher. Tests are difficult so you have to know what to study. His grading scale is a little weird but trust me it will help you. GO TO CLASS!!! He takes attendance every day and it WILL affect your grade.
Dr. Fieser is an excellent professor who happens to receive undeserved criticism. While the material for the class is fairly dry, he makes attempts to make it more interesting. He goes out of his way to gauge how well the class understands the material and will adjust his methods accordingly. His tests are really tough, but he gives huge curves.
The class is pretty boring, but no need for a text book! The tests are hard but he gives a huge curve and there's only 3 throughout the entire semester. Attendance is taken every day, so don't miss more than a couple of times. Overall an easy class!
Dr. Fieser was a good professor overall. He isn't perfect but he is probably one of the best options for Philosophy. He lectures the whole class time which leads to extreme boredom. If you don't find Philosophy interesting, you will have to do some studying. Luckily, Fieser does a HUGE curve that definitely ends up helping you. I recommend him.
Awesome class
I really enjoyed Dr. Fieser. Half way through the semester something can up and I missed an assignment. He had no problem letting me make it up. I enjoyed that we didn't have a textbook. We did have a reading every week which consisted of about 20 pages but I liked every single model.
Fieser is great. His lectures are pretty boring and confusing if you're not into philosophy but he tries his best to make you want to understand. He knows that his exams are tough so he curves them quite a bit. No textbook needed.
He is a great guy, hilarious, great lecture time and easy going guy definitely one of the best proffers at the school. Makes me want to minor in philosophy.
An enjoyable and lovable class that teaches people to have an open mind about ancient philosophers.
Dr. Fieser is a wonderful professor, one of the best at UTM no doubt. He brings some hilarity to the sometimes tedious topic of philosophy. Well educated on the topic, Dr. Fieser teaches with clarity, making the topic easy for anyone to comprehend. Definitely one of the best professors to have for a gen ed class.
Dr. Fieser is, by fair, the best instructor for Philosophy I've ever had. He is passionate about his instruction and he's overall chill. His lectures are easy to follow/provokes a lot of thought, the assignments required are preparatory study guides that are very effective ways of studying, and his usage of real life examples makes learning fun.
Lectures are boring and if you don't know anything about Philosophy or thinking about taking it for an easy A don't. Tests are extremely hard but there is a curve. However, the curve isn't enough. There are questions due every exam grade and they do take time. Wouldn't recommend him unless you like Philosophy and are willing to teach yourself.
Dr. Fieser is a phenomenal instructor. As a Philosophy major, I realize that my personal interests may lend themselves more to the material underneath the surface of basic philosophy, so I can understand how it may be difficult for some. He's very student friendly, lectures are fantastic, and he's always accessible and helpful. Do the work!
This course has a lot of reading. It is nice not having to go out and purchase a book because he provides his own readings from what he has written himself. As long as you keep up with the reading and the discussion posts, you shouldn't have too much of a problem. The quizzes, however, are very tricky. They are only 20 questions, but its in 15 mins
I really enjoyed this class, there was a lot of reading though. If you keep up with the study guide questions, you should be able to pass the quizzes. This is not a super easy class and does require about three hours of homework a week. But I really enjoyed his teaching style.
Dr. Fieser's classes are not a cakewalk. There are no study guides. The quizzes are T/F and are based strictly off the PAGES AND PAGES of reading he provides. Without a study guide, it's almost a guessing game as to what to study. If you're lucky, you may squeak by with an "A." He's alright as a person and seems to care, just not the best teacher.
Great professor, but be ready to put some work in. Tends to go really fast and cover a lot in his classes, so I definitely suggest actually going to class and at least listening. Don't do work last minute, you will most likely not finish it on time. If you're taking other work-heavy classes, don't take this at the same time.
Personally, I love Dr. Fieser. He is kind and through my hardships he has been incredibly compassionate & worked with me. As far as him being a professor, I've probably taken four of his philosophy courses because it is my minor. I would definitely rate him as difficult. Probably at least 10 hours a week of homework. Hard quizzes, reading!!
Grades are from only 3 things that he assigns every 2 weeks, where you'll only take notes in class and submit your assignments online. Majority of the time, lots of people fail his quizzes, but usually, he will give a 100 if you do the other 2 assignments that he gives out and it boosts your grade up (in order to remain passing his class).
loved him! would highly recommend taking him for any philo classes. very understanding and willing to work with you:)
I really enjoyed his classes. He is very unbiased which i highly value in a philosophy class. Each week you will have 20 study questions, a discussion, and a quiz. The quizzes are true or false and if you attend the lecture the study questions are a breeze.
The material is sometimes difficult to understand but Dr Fieser is a great teacher!
I'd have strongly preferred reading other sources. The only reading material is essays he himself wrote about each religion. I felt like I was being tested on what he knew, not about the actual religions we were learning. Primary sources and other materials would've been ideal. Tiered assignments, can't get to one w/o completing others first.
I really enjoyed Dr. Fieser's 110 and 120 class, he provided all the material for the class in the form of videos online and a text document for reading. Each section consists of 20 short answer study questions, a 100 word paragraph critique on a topic in the section, 3 discussion posts, and a 20 question T/F quiz at the end. Would recommend him!
Mr. Fieser is a fair grader and straight to the point. It's ALOT of reading, but he always provides us with videos to break down the reading which I appreciated. Only quizzes count as grades. He prefers that discussion posts are opinion-based. Make sure you don't use Chat GPT in here. Would take again
His lectures are boring, and he talks about the most random stuff ever that does not apply to the class at all. His grading system is absolutely god awful; he does only letter grades based on the percentage pf people who got that grade. His tests are hella hard, and you never know what the freak is on them. He only puts in 3 grades.
Dr. Fieser is so goated—he explains the complex issues of Philosophy super well and makes good time with what he has. His homework is twenty study questions about the material a week, plus three one-hundred-word discussion posts. He's also funny and reasonable. You do need to put in effort for the class. His grading method is weird, although.
Very kind and approachable! Tests are challenging, but if you do your assignments and review the study questions you will do fine. Very interesting lectures and quite funny too!
This was the Logic class. It was fairly difficult but not too bad. It's kind of like a more intense algebra class. Dr. Fieser is really chill. No end of year paper or discussions is cool. Attendance isn't mandatory but it I would strongly recommend going to every class.
