take it...easy and not too time consuming
Real Hard Tests PAY ATTENTION don't fall asleep STUDY FROM START always go!!
must pay attention and take notes, go to class, he goes fast, not interesting
Remember everything he said in class, You will get at least a B
He does go very fast. If you miss a day, make sure you get the notes.
lots of material to study (hey its college), but very interesting class...
Material on tests is very specific - takes Art Appreciation too serious
Have to work for an A , take good notes and study with a purpose. Good class.
Take good notes, he goes fast!! How the hell did I get a B???
Guy thinks art appreciation is the most important class in the history of civilization
nice guy, pretty cute, knows his info and is passionate about it. tests kinda hard, take good notes, don't come to class late unless you wanna be embarrassed!!
Hot! You have to pay alot of attention and read text, but if you enjoy art it's fun
not a GPA booster like my counselor said. he thinks art appreciation is of upmost importance. read the book and took notes, but still didn't do great.
be ready to take lots of notes, talks fast and there are too many facts to right test are hard prob will fail the first and make C's on the rest always wants to help
Hardest intro class i've ever taken. Study everything and still not do well on tests. You will skip this professor if you are smart.
Hated the course, went way to fast, didnt seem to care too much about his students, must take lots of notes and read the text. Hardest intro class I have ever had, first C I ever received on a transcript. This class was terrible!!!
Thinks everything revolves around art. Seems to concentrate too much on the male nudes. Tests are hard. The final wasnt as hard as the tests. If u dont study u will fail. Go to class..he uses pics from the book but also uses some from differents books
No Comments
Very informative... this is how you pass the class, write down details from his lectures... when he gives you the study guide make note cards with the picture on the front and the title, author and year on the back and you will pass.
This class was harder than it should have been, he goes into detail big time
Jamie is my hero, I love him lots and lots and lots. He is king of the evil mullet.

Don't take. Supposed to be an "easy" class. You've got to goto class, don't rely on other notes. You have to read and study frequently. HAVE FUN! I wouldn't take it again. But it did make me appreciate Art more.
This guy is very easy. Just don't buy the book. Go to all lectures. Take detail notes, study notes. Do all of extra credit. If lazy, u make B. Work hard, make A. Simple as that.
He does not go by the sybili or lecture notes for the test.
seem not to care about students, not helpful at all. Moved way too fast; didn't go by the book. Made class a lot harder than it should be. Would never take him again. Take anyone over FRAKES!
If you get him DROP the class! He is way to hard. His test are killer! You could study all day and still fail. He doesn't care about the students and is no help. Thinks everything revolves around art! Gen Ed is not suppose to be this hard.
You would think this would be an easy class, especially since it was for Gen Ed, but this guy makes this class so hard! I didnt like Art as much after I took his class. AVOID HIM if at all possible!
Makes a easy class incredibly hard, especially by going in no organized fashion and giving much more information then is ever on the test.
makes this intro class too much work. interesting and ethusiastic about class.
You get what you deserve in this class. Prof Frakes is an excellent instructor who knows the subject matter inside out. He is fair and very interesting. Go to class take notes and read the chapter. Great Class Great Instructor
He is incredibly smart, articulate and fun to be around. He will make you bust your behind to get the grades, not an easy professor, but one to take if you are INTERESTED in LEARNING and not sleeping while in school.
Absolutely the Worst teacher I have ever had ever since starting kindergarden. Tries to make the glass way harder than it should be. Definitly the boringest class ever. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU WANT A GOOD GRADE! Idolizes male nudes.
Definately not a good teacher. His goal is to make the whole class fail. Test are not even about what he puts on study guides. I do not recommend this class to anyone!

He is a VERY boring teacher. I seriously cannot stay awake in class. He is way too dedicated to art for me. Although he does give extra credit quizzes at the beginning of random classes and extra credit papers. I will probably end up with a B in the class
Makes things way too hard. Not worth taking, unless you really need that D.
hes crazy if he thinks we can memorize all the dates, titles, artist, and mediums of each piece of art.
He is a great teacher..His classes are challenging but he is a wonderful teacher!!! I do recommend him!
he is a nice guy, but a horrible teacher.
He is ok. Class is a little challenging. But he is willing to help you anyway he can.
He is an awful teacher, he doesn't help you at all. He always tells ppl to shut up. He gives attendances quizzes and grades them on how much u know about an unknown topic.
He is a good professor that shows interest in the subject he teaches. You have to have an interest in art to enjoy this class. Over all I was happy with this professor.
Gives way too much info and expects us to memorize every single specific detail.. he thinks just because he loves this crap everyone else does to
No Comments
No attendence taken, but def. show up to class, alot of memorization, but he makes the class interesting and he knows his stuff, extra credit given and is helpful
class is boring but easy, attendence infrequently, tests are easy if you study
I loved him, but you also have to love and have an interest in art. Go to class and read the chapters and you will get a B, possibly an A. E-mail him if you have ANY questions, and he will help you.
He is a sucky teacher and expects way too much from a gen ed course i recomend not taking this class and taking dance.
One of the best professors I have ever had. He knows his stuff and is willing to help out as much as possible if you are willing to give your time. Be prepared to work, but it'll be well worth it!
He is demanding, but if you just do the required work you'll do great in the class. Seems to me that the ones who are rating him badly are just whiny and lazy.
not funny even though he thinks he is. rude
bad teacher, don't take him for lbst. art. i couldn't stay awake in the class, i mean come on, he turns off the lights everyday and we watch overhead projections of art. and u must go to class every day, no way around it
Was one of the best teachers I ever had. Yes his mullet is both freaky and frightening, but he really helped me improve not just as an artist, but as a person.
Every class with Jamie is worth taking. You can't just goof off and do well. You have to go to class (duh). If you want to learn anything about illustration, then Jamie is your man! (He'll even throw in design information if you ask nice enough)
Jamie is the best teacher I've ever had at this university. This guy knows his stuff, and he will challenge you to become a better artist. The mullet is just as cool as he is.
he is a wonderful teacher. you have to pay attention and attend class otherwise you will not pass. he challenges his students which makes you think, which is what your are supposed to do in college. any that complain are just lazy.
He is strict but he obviously knows the subject and is willing to help anyone willing to put in some effort to learn it. If you have an appreciation for art to begin with this class will be informative.
Very smart professor. Class a bit boring but he tried to keep us involved and helped as much as we needed. Some dumbasses always seem to interrupt the class with their "remarks", but other than dealing with them, he's a nice guy.
This professer is extrememly hard and rude. He makes you memorize about 40 works of art per test. You have to know who made it, when they made it, what it was made of, and whether it was roman, greek, etc. He expects way to much out of people who arent going into the arts.
I didn't and don't understnad a thing he was talking about. His course syabysis for reading has no correlation to what is done in class. He gives a study guide but only shows like 4 works of art on the test. I'm not good at memorizing stuff, so it deff. isn't enjoyable, unless you like art.
Really good teacher, cares alot about his subject. The class isn't easy, but you'll learn alot about art. Study hard for the tests and memorize everything he says (take good notes, too). Try to ignore the stupid kids in the back. If you don't want to learn something, don't take this class.
Jamie is all-around awesome! He makes me smile. :) Excellent teacher and super motivater!
wow, what a bore, no appeal to the class, still no appeal, I didn't like art before coming in, still, I HATE ART EVEN MORE, worst class, going to barely pass, expects so much out of you for his tests, dates, names, medium, and artist, or about 100 paintings and tests on 20 maybe, definate shot toGPA

I don't know if train-wreck or disaster is a better work for James Frakes, perhaps a not so nice word that starts with the same letter as his name. He recites his page of info once, expects you to remember it and then the info never comes up again. Tests are open ended and hard!
Hated this class. Frakes has no direction to where he's going. Rude. He tries to make it interesting, but has to this day failed. Bables on about unimportant facts that will not be on the test and doesn't cover the test at all!

i thought he was a great professor. he isn't easy, but what art history professor is? if you study, you should get a B. if you never show up, and don't do the work, C it is!
This is a hard class but it is very interesting. I enjoyed every minute of it and I did get an A. It took a lot of work but students need to get over the fact that they cannot skate through life. We need to work for our grades.
What are these complainers talking about? it's hard, but great...and I am getting A's. If you're not getting A's in this class, look in a mirror, don't blame him! He's demanding, true, but if you lose your graphic design degree, you're probably a loser anyway
frakes is one of the most knowledgable professors I've taken in my art career so far, but the class is not so easy, if you study mad hard, go to class, and take notes, you should get by with a C, but he'll show an image 5 weeks before the test, that isn't in the book, and expect you to know it. toug
This class is a nightmare, don't let take it, it will most likely scar your GPA for a long time. this guy is on a power trip and wants to eat freshman for his breakfast.
He is rude and unhelpful. counts off for spelling of artists from all over the world. very specific answers needed to recieve full credit.
You'll have difficulty staying afloat unless you immerse yourself in the art and imagery first. Hard grader and expects a lot. Possibly too much for some.
Although I was dreading the class, Frakes made it very interesting. He hates people talking!..In order to make a good grade you MUST attend. He has random attendance checks w. extra credit quizzes. If you pay attention, he makes the class very interesting bc he has so much knowledge on art. He likes student input. I definitely recommend him!
Great teacher. Wonderful person... taking his class is challenging, but you learn so much!
a lot of memorization which i suck at. ended up with a b but if you dont go to class and take good notes you will fail.
Great professor. Great skills in drawing.
Wonderful professor. There is always an insane amount of material to remember in art history classes so keep that in mind. He loves what he does and that keeps the class fresh.Go see him, too, during office hours and learn more about art and how to write well for his class.
Horrible teacher. Lots of memorization. Expects you to be an expert on paintings. Make sure you do the extra credit...YOU WILL NEED IT
A little long-winded sometimes but nothing short of awesome! He has nothing but love for his students and will do anything to help you out. The Power Mullet is an added incentive.
Incredibly boring. No Notes/Attendance/Studying=F
Great guy, knows what he's talking about. The class is very boring and hard if you aren't into art. Unless your an art major don't take this lbst!!! Why too much memorization for a survey class.
He has a lot of art knowledge, if you like art, definitely take him!
probably the single most boring human being i have ever come across in my life. very pompous and gives difficult tests. He makes at least one error on every single test.
Dr. Frakes is an extremely boring and pompous professor. Look at it this way: A class with no windows the lights off and the endless boredom of his slide projector clicking for 1 1/2 hours. Avoid if you are looking for an interesting class.
I had no interst in the this class before except it was a requirement but I have never in my life learned so many interesting things. You do have to read the book and his notes are not soley on the test. I got a C but if I would have done the extra credits I would have gotten a B. Even if you don't like art he makes his class very interesting.
Good teacher.. really knows his stuff. He made the class very interesting. Tests aren't easy.. a lot of studying necessary. Gives extra credit assignments. Fairly strict attendance policy.
worst teacher ever
Total pompous ass. Expects you to memorize the textbook AND his notes WORD FOR WORD. You better know the symbolism of every object in every painting from all over the world or your GPA will be mutilated.
He's tough, but he knows his stuff. If your seriously into art history, take this guy. Take notes, give yourself time to study before tests and its not so bad.
alright professor. hard tests. most people failed or got d's. if you don't have to take it, don't. nice guy as far as a professor, but thinks he is better than he really is and thinks it's the students fault who fail.
TOTAL POMPOUS ASS...LETS LEAVE IT AT THAT.
This dude acts like he is always right. any comment you make in class is always only partially correct. he doesnt seem interested in what the students think. very strict, very demanding professor. i would avoid him if you can
Great teacher, engaging, and knows a lot. My only complaints are that his research papers are difficult (so definitely talk to him about it), and he talks sort of fast which makes note taking sometimes frustrating. Also, his grading is tough, so be sure to study, study, study!
Jamie, I feel, is the best art instructor at UNCC. He knows a lot and is willing to answer questions. He certainly cares about his students and encourages them to do their best and pushes them to do so.
Worst class I ever took in college. I too was a 4.0 student until this class. Main problem was half the class couldn't even get the book because he didn't order enough and anywhere online was backordered til the end of the semester. However, all his tests were straight from the book, not the lectures.
He is hard but worth every minute. This is my sixth class with Dr. Frakes and he still challenges me. If it were not for him I would not be doing what I love, art history. A lot of people complain but he is a geniune guy who really cares about his students, you just have to form a relationship with him, this will help you throughout your carrer.

He knows his stuff. If you want to learn Art History take him. If you're not willing to study and learn the material take another prof. He has high expectations, but they can be met.
Hard to concentrate during class- but not because he's boring, but really hot! Awesome ass, I mean awesome class! He's so smart!
Maybe I'm biased but, I really do think Dr. Frakes is one of the best professor's I've ever had. He expect's alot out of his students, as he should. His lectures are carefully put together and he is always willing to help you outside of class. He will push you to think seriously about your work and this will make you appreciate it more. Take him!!!
How is this guy still a teacher? 48% of the class (200 peeps in class) got an F. I had a 4.0 GPA until this class which I made a D in. DO NOT TAKE.
HARDEST CLASS I'VE EVER TAKEN. I, along with several other students, made a D in this course. He expects you to memorize EVERY picture in the book including date, medium, time period/culture, & artist/architect. My advisor asked me why I wouldn't take it again with him and I told her i'd rather kill myself. Bonnie Noble is much more helpful.
very helpful when asked out right, does not take any BS from anyone-se make sure you are serious about wanting to learn!
To the person who said 48% failed (200 students) I would suggest that your inattention to detail probably helped you fail this course. The course has 138 students TOTAL, and since 28% of them got an F - that would be 38 people.
Dr. Frakes knows what he is talking about, lectures are very interesting, and all exams are essay.
Dr. Frakes is amazing! I really enjoying coming to his classes. Test are fine if you come to class, take notes, and engage in conversation. Frakes is so funny and really makes class interesting. He knows his stuff- and is very intelligent. This class made me look at art and society differently, must take!!!
He is the best professor you will ever have. Very cool, fun and intersting. To pass his class, all you have to do is come to class and take notes. Thats it. He also gives you a chance to get extra credits. Which is very nice. And also he is a very hot professor.
He is a good teacher, nice, and helpful. I hate to say this but..he is sooo freaking hard. His classes are interesting,I respect him however it's hard to do sometimes because of his intense grading and criticisms.I know it's his way and we have to deal with it..but come on! ugh
GIVE US A BREAK...PLEASE
I absolutely love this professor. He is so interesting, friendly, and helpful. He's also really cute! The tests were not too hard, just pay attention in class and take notes. I would absolutely take another class with him.
he expects way too much from the students...other than he's ok..
Really smart man, but terrible teacher. UNLESS you are an Art History major i guess. But who does that?! Butt Chinn.
Dr. Frakes is really nice. He's tough but if you just go to class everyday and take notes and read a little you'll do fine. If you take a 3000 level class w/ him just write a lot during the exam. He's really cool to talk to esp if you think you're going to fail lol.
Only allows 3 skips before dropping a letter grade. You just analyze art paintings/sculptures etc. all class. Tests are multiple choice. Not too hard of a class, just memorization
Dr. Frakes is extremely credible & a great professor. His tests & quizzes will surely not be your easiest, however, if you want to learn a great deal, take him. Assign at least 30min a day to his class & you will get an A. It's all about keeping up with the material--it's a lot of information. I slacked off majorly & was screwed for the final.
Very Boring!! Talks about the same thing for almost the entire class. He says he will post blog grades and he doesn't. Sometimes he is hard to follow. Make sure you read the book!!
I took 2 of his classes. I once read on here back in 2007ish that Frakes ate Freshman for breakfast. It's true. As a freshman, I had NO idea how much studying you would need to do in order to just make a C in one of his classes. STUDY EVERY WEEKDAY and you will be okay.
I graduated n 05 majoring n Art Hist., so his & Noble's were part of the core curriculum. Looking back, I can still remember how resentful I was when I 1st failed. @ the end, I received the highest marks. If Jim rds these, I hope he knos just how much an impact he made. I would luv attending a wknd graduate course w him if UNCC ever offered.
Survey I with Frakes is extremely hard for a Freshman level course, but he gave great extra credit-an easy quiz for up to 10 points on your final AVERAGE. The exams are not multiple choice so you have to know a lot about the material. I got an A in the course because of the extra credit so STUDY EVERYTHING. You never know what could be on the exam.
Dr. Frakes is the greatest professor I have ever had. He his passionate about teaching and his research. He is very willing to work with students individually and gives great advice on studying, research papers and graduate school. He covers a lot of information in class so it is important to take good notes, read your book and come to class.
Frakes is amazing. He is a tough grader but is more than willing to help you. Extremely insightful about his topic and talks in "art history" vocab so sometimes hard to follow. Loves when people talk in class. 3 test, part 1: ID's part2: short essay part3: comparative essay part4: vocab, one research paper.
He is a really nice guy and a good teacher but his tests are very difficult. For his tests you have to memorize all the information for every piece he went over for the section (up to 80 sometimes). I learned a lot in the class, but I don't think that much memorization is necessary.
Absolute worse FRESHMEN level course ever. Too much memorization for the exams and does not grade fairly at all. If you are an art major and he knows it he will love you but all non majors good luck. He literally required us to memorize 8 different powerpoints with about 10-15 images in each of them and then vocabulary on top of that. Impossible
He expects way too much of students. On each of my three exams, we were responsible for learning the details and backstory of around 60 pieces of art, but only about 15 were going to be discussed on his exams. The three exams were the only things that made up our grades. This was a general ed course, and a massive waste of time.
Very enthusiastic for a change.
One of the hardest art history professors in the department. Work hard and you'll do fine, you will learn A LOT and grow from it. A lot of struggling and seeking guidance. Don't screw around here, you gotta keep up. Don't skip out on the reading. Ask questions and demand answers if you don't understand, he can be difficult and downright obnoxious.
He expects way too much of students. On each of my three exams, we were responsible for learning the details and backstory of around 60 pieces of art, but only about 15 were going to be discussed on his exams. I felt like i wasted my time taking this class.
Expects way too much from his students. Expected to memorize around 80 ID's, dates, mediums, etc. Also, around 20 vocab words for each test. On the test, there's only 10 of each. Seems like he thinks his class is the only thing going on in his students' lives. Test includes essay answers. No multiple choice. Very tough grader/ too harsh/ rude.
This was just not an enjoyable class :( The teacher really didn't even offer to help anyone and always had assignments for us to do. we had tons of homework and he would always throw pop quizzes at us. I'm don't think i will be taking this class again.
Only take Dr. Frakes if you're actually interested in Art History and need it for your major - this is not an elective-type class. This Survey I class was just like my other Art History classes - you're required to learn what makes a time period unique, and identify pieces from those eras and movements. We only had 4 assignments and 2 tests.
Took this class twice (failed the 1st time lol during covid, lost motivation). The second go-around with him was much easier since I did the work. Both times were online, which he made very easy to work with. His lectures are very interesting and not boring! I will say, very few grades. Not fun if you fail one of them. Listen to his feedback!
Dr. Frakes is a great and passionate professor when he teaches Art history. You learn so many fascinating topics. For the class requirements, your participation matters in the class, so do not skim the readings. There are not that many assignments, so the stakes are high. However, if you come to class prepared, you will be fine.
The best advice I have is to take lots of notes to use for your papers. Dr. Frakes is pretty quirky, just ask questions if you are confused. Definitely participate in discussion posts and on zoom to get a full grade for participation.
aggressive
Dr. Frakes' class is challenging but rewarding. Staying on top of the material and using study tools like Unstuckstudy are key. The exams test your knowledge, but with diligence, you can earn a solid grade.
