A very pleasant young liberal professor. Readings for the course a bit boring though. Beware of huge group projects.
An okay teacher, his readings are boring, and he gives horrible notes
nice guy. students have to lecture once a week though. this class is boring and so is he and the readings are too. picking up useless readings in geog reading room and getting photocopies once a week is a pain too.
Freeman rules, he's super interesting. We read and discussed the Communist Manifesto, how cool is that! I hope I will have him again in the future.

Good discussions but you have no idea where you stand in terms of grade. He agrees with everuthing u say and then the final mark makes u jump with surprise (of a bad kind)
I was apprehensive about this class at first, but I ended up learning quite a bit. Dr. Freeman may seem a bit stiff, but he always looks for new ways to get the material through (music, slideshows...rallies!). Be ready to do some solid reading!
Incoherent notes, pointless movies and unrelated class discussions lead to nothing being accomplished.
2004. Freeman is young, intelligent, and enthusiastic. A shy Marxist who wants his students to grasp the material any way they can. Engages the class by many means: film, discussion, readings. Cool, to the point, and friendly. Cheers!
This guy is all over the place! He starts off with one topic, and half way through, jumps to something else. Also, he talks too bloody fast; you loose him at hello! He's a really nice man, but definitely needs to upgrade his lecturing skills!!! Please!!!
Bring popcorn and a pillow to class. Dont forget the frog movie for the final.
One of my favorite teachers, very down to earth and approachable. I'm sure he will become a great teacher at ConU.
the class was not what I expected. But very fun in the end. all about globalization. If you like latin america, he knows everything about it and most of his examples come from latin america. Great teacher. if you listen in class, exam are easy!
Professor Freeman's best asset is that he is not afraid to introduce his own theories, which are usually very interesting. Geo 220 is not only useful for students, but also for writers or painters seeking to realistically flesh out landscapes. One complaint: professor, learn how to spell.
Very unapproachable, unless you're a "normal" person. His lectures are all over the plae, mixed up. I find the integration of his own theory very awkward, convuluted and redundant. To me he came of as an dull and unpleasant professor. D-
The course material is very interesting; all about globalization and the role of international organizations, especially in Latin America. Freeman is a good teacher, although there are some discrepancies on what he teaches and what he actually does. All in all, a great class!!!
Great eye candy - the man is hot! But, he knows his stuff, too - especially where Rio and Nicaragua are concerned. Be prepared to take a lot of notes, and do a lot of reading. I liked the material - though a little less time spent on economic factors wouldn't have been a bad thing, in my opinion.
Great teacher, with good lectures and fun topics. Alot to read though, but if you grasp the subject pretty easy to get a good mark.
Very interesting lectures, lots of interesting anectodes about his research in Brazil. Very easy on the eyes!
Great lecture, but he speaks very fast. Exam was easy if you go to class. By the way, he is really hot!
terrible prof. i was afraid to learn anything in this class because it's mostly based on his judgemental and way over-simplified opinions. there were some really smart people with great ideas in the class but he totally ignores what other people say if he doesn't agree. i couldnt justify waking up to go to his class because it was so useless.
I strongly disagree with the former comments and enjoyed this class immensely. Be prepared to work hard and engage the ideas he presents.
I, too, disagree with the negative comments below. I found his class very interesting and he is very helpful, responds quickly to e-mails,is clear, hence he knows what he is talking about. I really enjoyed this class.
lectures are interesting, and he is very clear on everything. he knows what hes talking about.
he's an amazing prof'. his work done on the beaches of rio de janeiro are a fascinating read. he actually took the time to help me prepare for my trip to brazil, which shows that he cares for people.. he prepares a set of essay questions as an exam review which we all found extremely helpful. he's a fair grader too and doesn't overload you with asi
great teacher, critical, political. a bit all over the place
Contrary to his comments, I will include some positive. Interesting subject, but does not tie down his concepts, just relates it to his experience in Rio. If you don't share his opinion he will attack yours.Lectures are vague, often abstract but no conclusions to the material. I got an A but had to go with his way of thinking in final paper
I finally figured out why he was condescending upon students who dont agree with him. He's a communist and marxist. Lemee tell you Freeman Communism has its own built in biases: 1:We are part of nature, hence we cannot avoid environmental determinism. 2:a classless society is impossible because the government becomes corrupt beorgoisie elite
This was by far the most interesting, relevant and valuable class I have yet to take. The only people I have heard complain about him are those who don't take the time to read the material and are too narrow minded in their willingness to understand the material for what it truly is.
The class was very interesting and the lectures are great. He uses a lot of his own experiences and studies to give examples of what he is trying to say. Very good class and i would recommend it to anyone.
Concise, passionate and informed.
Horrible teacher who doesn't explain the material well, the class is boring;kind of useless textbook. The lectures are not very organized and related with the book. The teacher notes are poor. This is the most boring class I have ever taken. If you have chance do not choose this professor.
Freeman is an excellent professor. He is well organized, knowledgeable and his lectures are passionate and interesting. His readings/lectures are varied and carefully chosen. Those that said he was "boring" are cretins. Wake up. Students are here to learn, and Freeman facilitates this perfectly. Don't attack the prof for your incompetence.
Great teacher. Course load is average you have weekly readings and you have to submit a response. Easy marker, and he gives you the exam questions beforehand
Excellent prof, very organized and passionate about the material. Easy marker as well, just do the readings and you'll be fine!
Professor is not boring like others have said, he is actually pretty insightful and raises some interesting points. However, online notes are vague and useless, do not make for useful study aids at all. Prepare for LOTS of boring readings. Prefers to test on knowledge of small details instead of the big picture. Mid-term class average was 48%...
His class on public space was very interesting. There were a lot of readings to do, but they were generally interesting. He assigns a reading response every week, which is really a gimme. His lectures tend to drag on, especially since he only gives a 10 minute break for an almost 3 hour long class. Overall, Prof. Freeman's class was decent.
He sucks! For his lectures he goes on and on of what he thinks about any sociopolitical issuesespecially about Brazil. Ugh that guy can go on forever about nothing. Then when its test time he gives the worst questions, doesn't cover any materials in class. Midterm class average: 45%. For your sake and sanity don't take him!
Jim can be helpful at times however he's not clear on what he wants for assignments and really I do not know what he wants from his students, no matter how much effort you put i just keep seeing students getting B's all the time.... I learned stuff in the course but do not know why this it's mandatory we just do readings and discuss...
Not clear on what he wants from students and only talks about what he thinks. If you want to do well you will have to know only his opinions. Does not ask students to explore their own ideas or to think critically. On exams, he asks questions where he refers to himself in third person, as if he came up with sociopolitical concepts all on his own!!!
Just Terrible. The exams are about his opinions & the lectures consist of him complaining about capitalism for 2 hours. Shows very little knowledge in subject beyond the scope of the power point slides, tends to avoid student questions by providing non-answers. Class average was B- for a 200-level class...
The lectures were interesting, the guy was too. I am in JMSB and took his class as an elective, which was an error because you work a lot for an unsatisfying grade. Although exam is easy when you are doing it, you get surprised by your bad grade even if he curves it up. Pop quizzes not announced before so you have to show up.
Only cares about his research and being right. He doesn't care about his students at all. He doesn't give opportunity for students to explore their ideas, or have a healthy debate in class. Any interesting questions will be answered with non-answers.
Would not take again or recommend.
Doesn't teach, he just really wants to know what you think of the readings and then gives his opinion. Pop quizzes are annoying but manageable. Get ready for the most vague instructions for your paper. Grading is suspect; everyone gets B's in the class, so try to go above and beyond as an A won't be easy to get.
awful teacher. he always talks about his previous work in rio de janeiro. finals are very difficult( 5 questions are about what HE thinks about the themes). wouldn't recommend at all
I learnt a lot from this class, it was interesting. But beware for you have to keep up with a lot of readings & ATTEND THE LECTURES - note down and process every idea/concept that Jim mentions in class (especially his views) & expand on them in your exams & the term paper based on his analysis. He is a chill prof but you have to go the extra mile.
Freeman gives me the impression that he doesn't care about the students and only "teaches" so he can continue his academic research at Concordia. I once scheduled an appointment with him during his office hours for clarifications on the term paper and he made me feel like I was a burden to him for actually showing up and using his office hours.
Really special professor, has a lot of important things to say about planning but also relates planning to world economics, sociology, etc. The readings are incredible, I have printed them out and will keep them for a long time. Extremely well spoken, and unlike most professors I have, is actually working in his field while teaching.
GPA Destroyer. The majority of students received either a C or C- for a 200 level course.
I took this course as an elective not knowing how it would go or what it would be like. I felt that Prof. Freeman adapted very well to online learning and structured the course well considering the pandemic. Overall interesting class and learnt a lot.
For a 200 level course it was extremely challenging for many students. Personally I did well but I would not suggest him as a prof.
Professor Freeman delivers a fair and very informational course. His lectures are a little long but hes very easygoing and understanding. Mix of exams and an essay.
This prof clearly does not care. He goes on rants about how he wishes he could go back to Brazil to work. He assigns things and then just completely forgets. He purposefully designs tests to be vague, or have questions about 1) some footnote from the reading irrelevant to the actual content, or 2) his random PERSONAL opinions. Bad experience.
He's a cool guy for sure and is enthusiastic about his research in Rio and does know a lot about urban studies and planning. HOWEVER I took both URBS 230 and 240 from him this year and they were almost the exact same. Same topics but from a "planning" pov instead of an "urbanization" pov. Can get dull because of this, but eh not too difficult
The hardest 200-level course I have ever taken. I don't think he cares at all about his students based on his lecture delivery and overall inaccessibility. For example, he declined my essay proposal by saying "this isn't pertinent" and was then impossible to contact afterwards for more feedback. I usually get A's and I got a B in his 230 class.
I have more energy dozing off from sleeping pills than while drinking coffee and listening to his lectures. Repetitive, monotonous, disconnected from his students, hardly explains the topic in accessible english. Good guy, very smart guy, but not a great professor unfortunately.
The lectures are pre-recorded so make sure to set aside time to watch them while taking notes meticulously about everything he says. The exams are horrible! They arent even about the readings but mainly about his opinion, class topics & theyre all over the place. Pop quizzes were easy. Just make sure to read every article! Not a great class.
I asked him for an extension a week in advance and he said no. Three weeks later he still hasn't graded my paper so idk why he wanted it on a specific date so badly. His exams and quizzes are actually from hell, I wonder if anyone has been doing good on them. He alone made my GPA drop, first B in two years, for an elective class no less.
Don't take this class!! I had the worst experience with him. All his exams are from his personal view, not from authors that we are assigned to read. You have a quiz every week to make sure that you read all the 80 pages!!! I wanted to pump up my GPA, well not happening with this class!!!!
He asked for an essay of 3,000 words. After I started my essay, he sent an email saying he has the right to stop reading after 1,500 words and that the bulk of our information should be in the first half. So knowing this, I wrote a 1,500 word essay, then copied and pasted the word word 1,500 times. I ended up taking a DISC grade bc he wildin
When he says "___ say this but I agree/disagree because ___" TAKE NOTES ON HIS OPINION! Half the final was mc questions about his stance on the readings. He isn't the worst prof and I found a lot of the readings interesting, but he's rigid and doesn't seem to care about students. That said, he curved the final and midterm up after we bombed them.
I love this man
Avoid this professor if at all possible. Weekly readings of up to 200 pages are assigned, specific details of readings are covered on pop quizzes in class. Lectures are monotonous, slides have no text so be prepared to take down every verbal detail, as the entirety of tests are based on his verbal opinions and do not align with readings. Terrible!
Bigman is a bit boring and only talks about Brazil and coffee houses, every lecture. nice guy tho.
Major chiller, but kinda a doodoo teacher tbh 5/10
Multiple choice questions are hard and correct answers are based on his opinion of which answer is best. He explains well the material sure, but make sure you take notes of his opinions.
Took this as an elective and ended up with the lowest grade out of all. Honestly worst professor I have ever encountered, He had to CURVE both the midterm and final tremendously so the grades would be okay. He gives numerous long readings and the exam questions end up about his opinions and nothing relevant about what you read. AVOID at all cost!!!
Worst prof ever. If anyone takes his class in the future, only reading texts will get you more than B. Every single presentation is useless. Both midterms and finals were about his opinion towards things learned during each class, readings and Brazil. This class was Urban Studies, not Brazilian History.
His class is by far the hardest class I've taken in my academic career. However, the material was super interesting but it was simply just too much to gasp for a 200 level class.
avoid him.
Incredibly boring, barely taught he kind of just reviewed readings assigned for the week, and honestly not a memorable teacher nor were his lectures memorable. GRADES ON OPINION, IF HE THINKS SOMETHING IS RIGHT IT IS RIGHT.
meh. He talks too much about Rio, his lectures can get very boring, and his feedback is really dry and a little rude.
I took this class as an elective and most of the people in the class too.Did not learn anything. The professor just yaps about his life and does not really give clear insights on course material. His voice is boring and if you have questions he will not answer them clearly. The exams are all based on his personal opinion. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!
Weekly readings, writing and discussion - all interesting book chapters, no purchases required. Lectures interesting, you must attend and take notes. Encourages participation. You must be able to understand all the content and be able to write/mcq about it. Tough, but curved in way that tightens spread helping low performers. I enjoyed this class.
Interesting class with weekly readings on which you have to submit a short summary (easy marks). To do well, attend and take notes. You will be evaluated on in-class lecture notes based from readings. Downside: talks about his research in Brazil TOO MUCH! Otherwise, nice and approachable prof. Take it if you can retain lecture notes info!
Must attend and take notes of lectures, this is mainly what you're tested on. Weekly Field Notes assignment were annoying as his feedback was "meh" and his guidelines very vague but it's okay since they're not worth much. Prof is nice but he changed the CO mid-sem. Easy if you have a good memory. Talks about his research in Brazil too much.
Only talks about Coffee Houses and Rio. Avoid.
He's a nice professor, but his lectures and readings are honestly really boring. You don't really need to go to the lectures, but you *do* have to keep up with the readings. I slacked off on a few and ended up completely lost. If you stay on top of them, though, you'll be fine.
Chill and and can have interesting lectures, but my god this guy gets a massive hard-on for Rio.
His slides are extremely boring with minimal information and he's very dull and doesn't give any feedback on his assignments. However, most importantly, his exams are total bs as the questions are based off of his opinions and nothing related to the readings. 0/10 Highly not recommend.
You have to go to class for the lectures, and the readings can be heavy but I do really enjoy participating in class for discussions and opinions. You never feel judged for your answer and you always learn smt new!
the class was okay. I personally dont like research that much, especially if the topic is the same as in every other class; Gentrification. the professor is nice but very arrogant, he uses his own opinions in his exams as answers. a huge part of the course is about citation in APA. the grading is alright but he changes his opinion a lot.
Had him for geo210. Exams are based on lectures, readings, PowerPoints, and his opinions. Half of the material on the midterm was unknown. The term paper instructions were clear, however, if you seek his help, you won't get it. Quite arrogant.
Very intensive reading class. Lectures are based on readings. Midterm and final are based on everything he gives out (readings, lectures, movies to watch, the teachers opinions). Many topics are just repetitive and he is a big yapper.
You have to go to class because his midterms and finals were MCQS, and around 2/4th of them were based on his opinions. We had a guest speaker come during one of the lectures, and some of the final questions were based on her opinion as well. Very reluctant to stay back after class and speak to you. It is way too challenging for an elective.
The course wasn't bad, but the lecture was boring, and the test questions were very precise, but thankfully he does not grade hard.
Straightforward course; students are given 2 exams, a final paper, & reading responses. Interesting readings + examples by Freeman. His exams are tough (especially the multiple choice section), but you'll do fine if you do the readings, go to the lectures and take notes, especially of discussions + his arguments.
GO TO THE LECTURES!!!!!!!!! The PowerPoints are not enough to study for the midterm and the final, as well as for writing the term paper. He is a tough grader as well but he usually curves the grades. There are readings followed by short responses of 250 words due every week. Get ready to read and write a lot.
The class itself is semi interesting, I am just not very interested in researching, especially if the topics are so limited. He himself is very conceited and doesnt accept criticism, especially on the exam questions, as he asks about his opinions. You also NEED to do the readings as minor details will be asked in the exam.
Not too bad, show up and look through the slides.
He knows his stuff. You need to attend the long lectures and note down what he says because he adds stuff that he says in class to the exams. He gives a lot of essay-type assignments every week which accumulate to 10% of your grade. I took this class as an elective as en engineering student
