Fair teacher: go to class, do the homework, study for the tests, make an easy B or C... extra work required for A ( ALSO IS VERY CLEAR ABOUT WHAT IS GOING TO BE ON TESTS)
Hard subject, good teacher...make good grades in lab and homework, it will raise your grade a letter....there are probably easier teachers, but he will make sure you learn the subject
Great guy, very helpful. He even spends most weekends in the tutoring center.
great teacher. very available and open to tutoring. doesn't assign extraneous material or go outside scope of class. totally reccommmend.
Dr. Friedrichsen is an excellent instructor. He's genuinely interested in the goal of TEACHING his students, explaining in language that is easy to follow and keeping the lecutres dynamic and interesting. I'll take his GEN CHEM II class next semester if at all possible. This guy is the best instructor I've had. Highly recommend this instructor!
Definitely one of the best teachers I've come across. Even though physics II is a hard course to grasp, He really strives to make sure every student understands the concepts. He usually explains every topic clearly and gives lots of examples of each topic. I you really want to learn, then he's the right teacher for you.
great teacher. very helpful. very clear as to what is on test. take him!
He is a very good professor. He keeps the class very interesting and is able to teach and explain complex concepts clearly. One of the best physics professors that I've had. He is just a really good teacher. With that stated, the material is somewhat difficult so don't expect it to be easy because you have a good professor.
Probably the best teacher I've ever had. Excellent lectures. Very knowledgeable. I wish I could take his classes through my entire college career.
Wonderful teacher. Dr. James helped me from Basic Math Skills at the tutoring lab up to Calculus. I took his physics class and I wasn't very good in science and still made a B. He's clear on whats in the test, and tutor his homework. Don't miss the lab, it will help you get the concept.
You won't find a better prof anywhere. But it is a very difficult subject. He tells you what will be on the tests, but still they are incredibly grueling affairs. Show up for every class (your head will never stop spinning) and stay on top of the homework and you'll do fine. Take this class.
Come to class and do homework on time!
Come to class and try hard and do homework. Explains very thoroughly, but expects a lot from you!
fun guy, connects with the class, knows his stuff, and has awesome diagrams for you to follow. he makes sure the whole class keeps up and will take the time to slide from his syllabus to attend to this.
Excellent professor, keeps the information relevant to real life which makes it interesting. This is a very difficult class, a lot of information in a very short time period, but very clearly presented, must attend every class, online homework will help you tremendously. Very math intensive, I would recommend having more than minimum required.
Dr. James explains things clearly but the semester moves QUICKLY and the subject is TOUGH. Get a LiveScribe SmartPen; it's the best investment you'll make, and try learning lab tutors until you find one that helps. Do the homework and don't give up. You'll put more work into this class than any class EVER before, but Dr. James is the one you want!
Get a LiveScribe SmartPen. His lectures are clear but you may not realize that until you listen to them another again b/c the subject is TOUGH. That's where the SmartPen comes in. DO THE ONLINE HOMEWORK and prepare to spend more time on this class than all your others combined. Find a tutor you like. And you WILL appreciate Dr. Friedrichsen!
Outstanding professor. ACC is lucky to have this guy on the faculty. Demands a lot from his students, but gives a lot in return. Lectures are clear but fast-paced and packed with info. You must go to class, do all the homework, and spend ample time outside class to do well. In return, you get actual, usable knowledge.
Great professor, really smart, explains physics in an understandable way. Draws really awesome diagrams to explain his lectures. Really wants you to learn!
HARD,HARD,HARD!!! He's very clear and helpful, best Physics prof. at ACC, you learn alot but gives too much homework so you don't get enough time to study for the test, which greatly affects your grade. If you've never taken Physics before, his class is a rude awakening. The Cal I requirement is useless. It's barely used, barely!
You HAVE to attend his lectures to get the material!! I will say it is the hardest class I've taken thus far and actually was able to pass and make it to the end and come out fairly well! It's not that HE is hard, the MATERIAL is hard!! He teaches in a very CLEAR MANNER and leaves NO confusion!! He will make you WANT to drop at first to weed out
Dr. James is simply one of the best professors I have ever had. Most people cringe at the thought of physics because it's apparently taught poorly by most profs. He is different.I learned so much in this course and feel quite comfortable in physics now. He is also extremely fair.
Wow! He is good and he knows it . He works hard at maintaining a most excellent class experience. He devotes Sundays to tutoring at the Lab. Take him if you need a good lecture in physics. So cool, so old school, and into being a prof. SWOON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I didn't want to take PHYSICS, but Dr J has a sneaky way of making you want to learn more. Plan on LOTS OF HMWK. I don't see how ppl keep up w/o higher level math- trig and pre-cal helped me - but he's good at explaining concepts. Lectures are long, but extremely helpful. He is also kinda loud, which gets tiresome. But I absolutely enjoyed class.
After going to a different community college and getting a terrible professor, I realized how truly awesome Dr. J is. Everything in the class is super straight forward, you know exactly what to study, his lectures are linear and on track. Even though it was a 6 week class, I never felt rushed and I learned a ton. He is a pro. Highly recommended.
nice professor - personable, likes to laugh, says "bless you" when someone sneezes (even during lecture). easier than 1401. lots of labs and demos. fairly fast-paced, covers all of the mandatory material. fun class, though long format. kind professor, serious physicist. cute lab tech (curtis).
One of the most clear, knowledgeable, and helpful professors in the game. He takes a difficult subject and makes it very straightforward to follow, even for those who aren't of the Physics mindset. Highly recommended.
Need a understanding of trig. The class is hard, HW done on webassign; which was poor. Simply correct/incorrect. Lab reports are straight forward. Few hours a day studying. Relaxed on grading tests. Good professor, physics is just a difficult subject. Enjoyed the class.
Dr.James is an excellent professor, who clearly loves to teach. Tests are fair, and doable if you study. HW took a lot of time and class got out late most of the time. Required textbook is absolute crap and was more confusing than helpful--most people just stopped reading it. Just be prepared to invest lots of time.
Dr. Friedrichsen is an excellent professor. Very knowledgeable of physics and is able to provide a very thorough lecture. The exams can be challenging, but if do the homework and understand what you are doing then it isn't that bad. I only wish he could teach all my classes.
This guy is the one of the BEST professors ever! I found the MCAT physics questions cake after taking friedrichsen! If you are struggling see him, I saw him help many students. If you love physics like I did, ask him questions after class, he is so knowledgeable and approachable! You will not find a better person to teach you physics in Austin.
Dr. James is truly one of the best professors I have ever had (and I'm a grad student)! His passion for physics is obvious; it's hard to not find interest in the material when he teaches. I actually really enjoy physics now! He's a fair grader and makes a genuine effort to help and get to know his students. Highly recommended.
One of the best educational experiences I've ever had was taking Dr. James' PHYS I class. He's a very gifted professor and makes every effort to see you succeed.
Great physics Teacher so far. Ratemyprofessor is pretty accurate!
Dr Friedricksen is a very helpful professor for ACC. Thr classroom arrangement is awkward bc you have to sit sideways and stay like that for the lab.
Lectures and labs are both very good. He makes you work a bit if you want to pass this class. He' is a very good instructor and a pleasant guy.
he's a great instructor for this class altho he tends to fall behind a little
"DR. J" is an amazing physics professor. VERY highly recommend!!!
Great tracher. Its not hard to pass with a c if you're willing to work a little bit... if you want an a its different...
good guy his class aint that easy
A fantastic prof. He made sure we were taken of when he was sick. Thank you Dr. James!!!!!!
He is very thorough.
Difficult subject., Tests are harder then the homework.
Dr. Friedrichsen is a wonderful professor. His tests are straightforward if you take notes every day. Do not miss his class if you want to receive a good grade!
Very competent teacher and very dynamic. His tests are hard, but that's physics which is why people are afraid of it. Better to take it here than UT.
I learned mostly from studying his examples and comparing them to the homework. Labs were kept fairly short. This was a well planned class!
Great professor but a difficult class. An A is achievable, but be prepared to work for it.
Hard Class, not sure if a different professor would have made it any easier.
Great guy and very accessible. Lab is cramped ,but lab assistant is a real smart guy.
This professor is way way way better than the one I had for 1401. I also got a better grade. A strong rec from ME!!!!!
Very good with the material. I learned a lot from him. He is the best.
Very good teacher. He will help you in the office if you are confused about something.
no comment really just excellent all around
Take Friedrichsen if you want to understand and learn PHYSII. Great lectures, but intense. Go to class, take notes, ask questions, go to office hours, study, do homework, then do all of that again... and again... This class is not easy, but I'm a former teacher, and this guy can TEACH. He's really smart too. Small classes so it's a good environment
Excellent lectures, small class size, and very intelligent and proficient professor who can relate physics concepts to real world applications.
This is my second physics course with Dr. J. He is still the best teacher I've ever had and for a difficult subject I couldn't be more appreciative. You will do so much homework but it is all with a purpose assuming you are working for an A. He is now recording his lectures and posting them making the class even better. Great professor, no easy A.
Awesome professor! I can honestly say that it's not hard to do well in this class with him teaching.
He is somewhat demanding of students, but this is one of the best professors I've ever had in my entire life. 10/10
You must take Phys 1402 with this professor. The seating is weird. In fact it sucks. But teaching wise Dr. J. is truly THE BEST!!!!!
Excellent teacher, excellent class. He has a demanding syllabus which requires a lot of work on the part of students. If you can keep up the pace, you will learn physics and gain the knowledge for your future career. Very Much Recommended.
Prof. Friedrichsen is great. Extremely pleased with his class and the accuracy of this website.
Very detail oriented. Very attentive to student needs. Homework coverage is thorough. Every single lecture is high value and top notch. Very few dropouts during the semester. I'd rate him a 10.
Simply awesome... He's worth the drive to East Austin. The best science professor I've seen anywhere . Will take again.
Outstanding professor and friendly.
Friedrichsen is THE MAN! Brilliant at physics and teaching. Always generous and helpful in office hours. You WILL learn physics in his class.
I did all the homework and did everything pretty well until the final. But still I wasn't sure if i could get an A in this class. I really thought it would be like a B+.. but I did get an A ... and couldn't be happier. .. I strongly recommend this professor before anyone else. .
This was a really hard class, but I took it during summer so keep that in mind. He does care about his students and he'll work with you if you're in trouble. He records and posts his lectures online too, so that's useful if you miss. My recommendation if you choose him: get ahead so you don't fall be behind, and don't skip over anything; it ties in
He gives you resources: in-class examples, online homework (with unlimited attempts, practice problems, and make-up work), on-paper problems, and lectures (which he records). He's generous with extra credit and a lenient grader, but exams are rigorous. Expect to work hard. I used an old edition of the text, but you need the online component too.
He is the greatest physics professor in my book! Make Friedrichsen your first choice. He's well worth the extra drive to East Austin.
I had Dr. J for general physics 1, Engineering Physics 1&2, and he is hands down the greatest professor I've had. His lectures can be intense, but it's an intense field. His method of teaching is clear, his lectures and diagrams are well organized and easy to follow, and everything is recorded for reference outside of class. Absolutely recommend.
His class is situated in the weirdest classroom which was originally a lab so you have to twist your body sideways the whole time to look at the board. You also have to lean forward if there is somebody sitting in front to you. So the location is not recommended if you have back or neck issues. However Professor Friedrichsen is recommended fully.
Dr. J is awesome!!!! It is so easy to learn physics from him... Do the homework and read the book. This will guarantee you an A.
He pushes you hard but this is an extremely good teacher. Exams are somewhat lengthy. Labs are laborious which could be a pain depending on your group.
Great teacher!! There are lots of different types of material you have to cover. Therefore you must have personal initiative and do the homework on your own first. That way you can comprehend the principals. He has his lectures recorded so you can watch online.
Dr. J is amazing! Nice, professional and grate at his job! He makes the topics so interesting and takes grate pride in his teaching. His standards are very high and for a good reason, the things he teaches during lecture and lab make you ready for harder classes to come. If you work hard you will get the grade you deserve.
A little time consuming, but absolutely top notch teaching that other profs could learn from (sad to say). A++
Had him twice for physics Both times he was fantastic.
Dr. J. is straigt up amazing. I don't have one bad thing to say about him or his class. You will learn so much. Pro Tip: Register early if you want a spot in his class for physics!
He is an outstanding professor who knows how to teach and how to explain. If you have to take PHYS 2426, this is your best professor at ACC.
By far the best physics teacher at ACC. He is a very intelligent person who explains the material clear. He also has his lectures online in case you missed anything.
Overall, the class is challenging and you must be motivated to learn. That being said Dr. J is a great professor that cares about his students. The homework can be tedious but do them and pay attention during lectures and you will know how to do every test question. Bonuses on every test to help boost your grade. Great professor!
HW. Easy 90+. Problems and online hw mimic problems done during class. Lab reports. Less than 5 formal reports. Easy 90+. Other lab reports can be turn them in with a group. Easy 90+ Exams inc. essay, short answer problems, and numerical problems. Study chapters and use hw problems to practice. Easy 80+ on exams. Professor is super helpful.
I took Physics 1401 in the fall and i was super worried about doing well in this class. My only math experience was College Algebra, but Dr. J let me continue on in the class anyways. I had to teach myself trig ( Which honestly wasn't terrible) and i really put in a ton of time into this class. I ended up getting an A in the class! Take Dr. J!!!
I love Dr. James! I took him for physics 1 & 2 and made an A in both! He is very helpful if you have questions. His lectures are enjoyable. He posts video & audio of all of his lectures online so you can watch them if you missed/are confused. STAY AHEAD so you don't fall behind. He gives a week to complete hw. DO IT EARLY. He is so smart and nice!
Amazing professor. During the exams he gives you a lot of extra credit even if you didn't get the answer. His lectures are tied in with the lab which makes it super easy to grasp the material. He has online homework and you have unlimited tries to get a 100. The labs are really easy and he will help when ever you need it.
Take him for physics he is amazing at teaching and makes the subject really interesting to learn. He gives a review a week in prior before the exam and has it in order from each chapter which makes it really easy. But overall super amazing professor. This is also coming from someone who has never taken physics even in highschool.
It's not that his class is hard but the material is hard itself and he's really good at explaining it so just take him. You need a box of colorful pens, don't ask why just have them ready for class, it helps a lot. He does require pearson but DO NOT BUY IT until you show up to class. He gives you a code for a discount and it's SO MUCH CHEAPER.
If you understand the material for physics 1, this will be a breeze. He is an amazing professor and throughly explains the material. Just take him.
He is an amazing professor overall. The labs are quite intense and require some work. However, the homework is a whole other beast. The homework is tedious and will take at times 6-8 hours. (Coming from a STEM major, that makes A's on math and science courses.) However, it is an amazing practice for the exam. Also gives out exam reviews.
you have to take him to understand why he is the best. The way he explain the material make it so easy to understand and in addition he upload the lecture videos so you can review the material. I will take him again next semester.
The best physics professor in the state of Texas! take him whenever you can. Does a lot of examples in class and doesn't skip important details while lecturing!
I took PHYS2425 and 2426 with him. I have never really liked physics and it is really hard for me to grasp. His lectures are all projected on the board so if you sit in the back of the class you won't be able to see it. There is a lot of homework and I found the tests to be super hard. PHYS2426 is hard and takes a lot of time to pass.
AMAZING! He is such a great teacher and he truly cares about his student's success. He is willing to get back to basics to help those in need and is very smart and just all around a great person! I have zero complaints. His class was the hardest class I had taken then but he is such a great professor that I have fond memories and had a great time!
I liked Dr. James' teaching style. He records his lectures and posts them online afterwards, so if you miss a class, you can easily catch up. My only issue with the class is that he would frequently arrive 10-15 minutes late, so we fell behind schedule and ended up not covering all of the material listed in the syllabus.
E&M is a hard course. Your ability to apply calculus and modeling techniques to solve physics problems will be tested immensely. This class takes a lot of work to pass, let alone get an A. But Friedrichsen will give you all the information you need to do so. He will prepare you for the next step and challenge you to dig deep. He's a great teacher.
Dr James is the best physics professor I ever had. I hated physics when I was in high school. He gave me a good liking for physics. If yall hate physics he will fix that completely. He does all things to help you get an A. He is very helpful with homework and even on exams. He has a great study hack (do hw without notes). He has good lectures.
I am taking Dr James for the second time. I love when he helps for office hours and clarifies what is going on in the problem on homework and tests. He has a very good teaching style and I like his class to be synchronous because then I can get interaction with the instructor and ask questions. You have MasteringPhysics, Take home problems for hw.
In covid times, labs are easy to follow. Lectures are tough, 3 exams and comprehensive final. 10points extra credit on each paper. Accessible outside of class. Pay attention in class, do the homework, follow the review and its all you need to know for the exams.
I got an A in this class not because I learned from him, I used YouTube for the whole semester to understand the material. Exams are very long and each question has a,b,c, and sometimes e.
Amazing professor. He puts so much time and effort into his class it's astonishing. The class is really challenging, but in no way, shape or form is it his fault. Get into his class by any means!
Physics is a tough subject, and physics exams are worst of all. I though it was odd professor took attendance, but that also forced me to attend every class. Lots of homework, but if you do the homework (and understand it), you can expect to do well on the exams. Professor gives you every opportunity to do well in the class, but you have to work.
Dr. F is a smart man! He records all lectures and puts them up on YouTube which makes studying a breeze. Most test questions will be in-class examples with different numbers. Tests were lengthy but we were given 3 hours to take them. Homework is on Mastering Physics. Lots of opportunity for extra credit both on tests and "take home" problems.
One of the best professors at ACC. Lots of extra credit opportunities. He is very caring and flexible with extending due dates on homework, labs, and even tests. Lectures are long but you can watch the recordings if you skip the class. You have a choice to complete the labs either in groups or individually. Responds quickly to emails. Take him!
I am planning on taking Dr. James again next year. Even though this course was online he did a great job at making tough concepts clear to understand. Tests are similar to examples/definitions worked in class, and homework problems are very helpful. He provides a lot of extra problems for practice as well. Lab was straightforward. Highly recommend!
Dr. James is everything you could ask for in a professor. Ultra-intelligent but still personable, challenging but not unfair, creates an accessible learning environment for students of all learning types, gives background information to integrate and apply concepts, and his level of give a care for his students success is off the charts!
How could he get 5/5 rating? I was really fooled into believing it since it was a nightmare. Depressed, and stressed, ended up dropping out in order to save my GPA.
Dr. J is quite an amazing professor. I am currently taking him in general physics 1 in preparation for further coursework with him. Although he was quite gloomy this semester, I believe its due to personal issues I'm not aware of, he still managed to provide an incredible class. Dr. J is a brilliant man who is the best physics professor at ACC.
This was the first time I actually liked a physics class and it's all due to the professor. It is a challenging class but it is very fair and he is amazing at explaining concepts. Lots of homework / assignments though. It was a pleasure to be in this class.
I had him for PHYS 1401 and 1402. Physics is a really hard subject, but Dr. James really breaks it down and simplifies it for his students. Exams are free responses, and it's graded with partial credit. His grading style helped me learn where I was making mistakes, and I improved by the final exam. Take him (his class fills up fast)!
Seems burned out, very low energy. We covered THREE CHAPTERS (out of 15 total) on the last day of class whereas we spent nearly half of the semester on the first five chapters...terrible pacing. His notes are super crowded. Very slow to grade labs and basically gave everyone 100 on them. He is quick to grade exams, provides study guides for exams.
Is it a known thing where Community College Professors are better than University professors or have I just been extremely lucky? Dr. James' organization and attention to detail during his online lectures made it so easy to follow his lectures. He color codes everything and spends time explaining the concepts. I thoroughly enjoyed this class.
Dr. James is a great professor and is good at explaining materials and is well organized. He's also very understanding and willing to adapt to individual needs and circumstances. However, his exams are free response style which was a challenge for me. Pay attention to his examples provided in lectures, and the homework.
He's a cool guy who knows his subject. Homework software is included in ACC tuition and is the main way you study for exams/understand concepts more. If you're good at math, the class is easier. FYI: labs, exams, and some supplementary class work is all paper, so get a binder to stay organized.
Dr. Friedrichsen was fantastic! His lectures were engaging and well thought out. He is great at making sure we have what we need to be prepared for the exams. He gave us plenty of opportunities to receive extra credit. I would absolutely take his class again.
RUN, DO NOT TAKE HIM. HE IS THE WORST PROFESSOR. TRUST ME. THEY ARE LYING. HIS EXAMS ARE VERY HARD AND SO LOOOONG . AND HE IS SOOOOOOO RUDE AND IS NOT WILLING TO HELP. HE TELLS YOU THAT YOU SHOULD BE ON YOUR OWN YOU ARE AN ADULT. RUNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN.
HE IS THE WORDS
Dr.James is truly a good teacher. He gives you everything you need to succeed. While the content is difficult if you put in the time to study and attend office hours when needed you will do well. He made sure that the content was learnable and very happy to explain things and help with homework. Partial credit is given and helps you improve.
Professor James is an excellent physics teacher. Though the content is challenging, his clear explanations, partial credit grading, and helpful office hours make the class manageable. unstuck AI was a great study aid alongside the course materials.
Didn't stick to the schedule or complete labs per syllabus. 1/10th of the exam was an essay. Very blunt. Sometimes had an attitude if you asked questions. If you like asking a lot of questions, don't go here. The actual lecture is great! He knows all the math behind the physics! he posts lecture to blackboard! seems jaded. exam is very hard
Partly my fault for falling behind, but from getting a 4.0 in every course in these past semesters, specifically in Math 2414 and PHYS 1401 (the prerequisite), this course was extremely challenging. Take my advice with a grain of salt, as I am not that great with online courses realizing now, but this was a struggle for me, and hes not too lenient.
As a person, Prof Friedrichsen is very nice. I enjoyed his teaching style despite it being a online course. The class is long and by no means easy. Ask questions when you need to
I took both Engineering Physics I and II with Dr. James. I learned a lot of material from him and the work he provides. While, he doesn't give much feedback, the homework (and practice exercises) does prepare you a lot for the exams. The labs do require you to put in effort for some, for others are more relaxed. Overall, fair and square.
The class has "mandatory" lectures, but I only went for exams as attendance doesn't impact your grade. Tests were 10 questions, plus an extra credit question, all short answer/essay. Very long tests, and they made up majority of lecture grade. Camera, mic, and screenshare on during exam. Course is hard but if u study ur fine. Would def recommend.
I took GP1 over the summer with Friedrichsen and am now taking GP2 with him again. Physics is a tough subject but Friedrichsen manages to teach it EXTREMELY well. He frequently checks for comprehension and is open to questions and is incredibly responsive to office hours and emails. The subject itself is hard but Friedrichsen is the man for it.
He records the lectures so you can just watch those if you dont wanna show up to class. Tests are online, u gotta turn ur camera and mic on as and share your screen. I took both phys 1 and 2 at the same time, if youre someone like me who just needed the credits, gpt carries, his format rlly allows u to pass easily if you got two laptops, good luck
omg this class was EXTREMELY HARD. He must've switched up how he does his tests or something because it was so unbelievably hard I probably would not even pass the exams even if it was open notes. if you are albert Einstein and a physics master TAKE THIS CLASS!!!
