He is amazing! First day of class he said that his job was to make our lives easier and maybe teach us some chemistry. He definitely made this awful class bearable and worth actually going to lecture! Definitely try to get into his class!
ok, chem 2 is a hard class but this guy will do everything he can to get you to pass without changing the grading scale. i went into his office to get help, he took a look at my tests and raised my final grade 4 points and gave me one of the blank tests to use to study for the final. hes also very funny. he will surprise you ;D
He is great! Just go to his office hours if your having any trouble at all.
wow, great teacher. attend class and you'll be golden, he goes over every type of question he'll ask during lecture. Very helpful and nice. One of the best teachers I've had
Very funny and very easy....Dr. Gardinier includes a list of all the formulas you could possibly need on each test, and he gives out quite a bit of extra credit. The online homework problems can be really helpful for understanding the material, but they are usually harder than the actual test questions.
Great teacher, pretty funny too. He will do crazy stuff in class, lets you out early many times. His tests are easy, and homeworks are pretty easy too. By far the greatest Chemistry teacher at Marquette University.
Dr. Gardinier can be pretty funny, but this is the hardest chemistry class I've experienced. Tests are extremely difficult. It was not uncommon in our class for the average to be below a 50%, which helps a lot. Lectures are pretty boring. Overall a very difficult class.
Awesome! He was my favorite teacher of the semester. He is funny, very helpful, lets you out early quite often, tests are essentially the same as the practice tests he puts on-line, and he curved all of the tests.
For Chem 1001 he was not the best teacher. He was helpful if you went in to talk to him and would regrade your tests for you to give you back points incase the TA missed some. He did not care if you were in class or not. Very hard tests. Hard to follow in lecture but notes online. Was not a bad guy. Very funny. Nice curve to tests.
For chem 1001, he was not that bad. He was a little difficult to follow during class but was very helpful in extra help. I found myself teaching through the book which really helped. He is a funny guy during class and makes the somewhat boring lectures interesting.
He's a goofy guy during lectures which makes it a lot easier to pay attention. Tests are very difficult and only one practice exam is given, since he's a new teacher. Homeworks are easy and boost your grade. His curves help out a lot, as classes averages were in the 50s and 60s. Very approachable. I would definitely recommend though.
An absolutely fantastic teacher. He teaches his lectures with powerpoints he makes himself, and he always puts in the extra effort to makes his classes funny. I would highly, highly recommend him if you want a fair, funny teacher.
Geally interesting lectures he adds alot of jokes to make the content bearable
Unless you came to class with the assigned chapters already read, which you prob haven't, you won't understand what he is saying. Goes through slides extremely fast, and for some reason lets the class out 5 min early. Test are difficult, but not too challenging if you study timely. You rely on the book basically, also sign up for tutoring.Don't rec
Great guy but bad teacher during lectures. Mostly taught myself out of book, but if you go in for help he is very helpful. Tests are hard if you dont study enough!
Dr. Gardinier is such a great professor. Yes, his exams are difficult but he curves them which are nice. He uses powerpoint to teach his lecture and posts them on D2L afterwards. he can be reached by email to clarify any questions or you can stop by his office which is extremely helpful. i would def recommend taking him! ((:
Horrible teacher. He doesn't know how to teach!(simplify concepts and explain them). His exams are tricky and don't pick up on the main concepts (HUGE curves). You leave feeling like you did well and it ends up being the opposite. His lectures are pointless because he wastes so much time making huge joke slides that he doesn't cover the material.
He is awesome. Gardinier has a great sense of humor which made going to class bearable. He makes his own powerpoints which try to make the concepts really clear. His TA's suck and the labs are difficult but the class overall is not that bad.
His class was interesting, pretty cool guy for the most part, but his exams were IMPOSSIBLE!!! I studied endlessly and never got the grade i was hoping for
No matter how much I studied I did not learn as much I hoped I would. I learned so much second semester because I had a better teacher, Yi who is straight forward and very fair with his exam questions and content. I still remember what I learned after.
Gardinier has very entertaining lectures (as far as chemistry goes) and is really helpful if you go to his office hours. His tests are only 16-17 questions though, so you must know the material well or your grade will drop fast!
Has a good sense of humor, but does not explain concepts well! I did hours of practice problems, but still did not get the grade I hoped for. Exams are only 17 multiple choice questions, so even if you only get 3 wrong, you're already in the low 80s...
His class is bearable. He adds a sense of humor to his lecture, but make sure you know whats going on. His tests are like his previous ones, so make sure to study those. Overall not a terrible class, but make sure you are going to need this science class otherwise dont take it
Gardinier is a good teacher who tries to make Chemistry interesting through lots of humor and jokes throughout his lectures. He is helpful if you attend his office hours and curves his tests, which are multiple choice and aren't hard if you study. Overall, I think he's a good teacher and would highly recommend him if you want to do well in Chem.
He's an ok teacher. But you definitely need to put in a lot of effort outside of class in terms of studying, practicing problems, etc... Otherwise, he's on ok lecture, can be funny, somewhat helpful when you have questions.
VERY DIFFICULT CLASS. Dont expect a curve. the most difficult class i have every taken, be sure to take tutoring outside of class and do group studying. He puts up the simple problems on power points and then complex ones on the test. NOT COOL
Hard class and he doesn't teach too well. If I hadn't taken AP chem in high school I would be in big trouble for this class and even with previous knowledge it was still difficult.
Dr.Gardinier is the best teacher that I have ever had. He makes lectures interesting by making fun power-points and in class experiments. Also, he is extremely accommodating and helpful if you make the effort. Attending class is very beneficial but going to office hours is even better. Read the book, do practice problems and you will be fine.
If you have little background in chemistry this class is extremely difficult. Gardinier is a terrible teacher with expressions such as "you do something like this" and "you can figure it out" it is extremely frustrating. I managed to do ok in the class but it was a small miracle, avoid at ALL cost.
AMAZING PROFESSOR! Dr. Gardinier is funny and a GREAT teacher. His tests are easy as long as you study his lectures; which he posts online. Usually teaches the 8 am session but DEFINITELY worth it! Lots of fun experiments to explain concepts and most of the information on his powerpoints is straight-forward; just read the lecutres and listen!
His lectures are so dry. I had to take his class at 8am because thats the only way it would fit my schedule & I wanted to shoot myself every morning for it. His tests are only 16 or 17 questions & the class averages are always around 60%, if even that. This was such a difficult class, especially as a freshman. I ended up withdrawing. DO NOT TAKE.
Definitely a difficult class. Gardinier's lectures are beyond boring and almost impossible to even follow, he goes so fast. The tests are super hard, the averages are always in the D-Range. I hated his class, definitely would not recommend. Gardinier makes Chemistry boring, and took away any interest I had in the subject.
Chem 01 is easy as long as you've taken physics or something of the like before. Gardinier however is not the best professor. I only went to office hours a few times and it was NEVER a pleasant experience. He does however, do a good job of showing freshmen how college and college classes are different than high school.
DR GARDNIER IS ONE OF THE WORST PROFs IV EVER HAD! the only one good thing about him is the curve! his tests are fair but because he doesn't teach well you cant answer them! I LOVE CHEM but i hated it after GARDNER! good luck!
Dr. Gardinier is not a great teacher, but he is funny and likes to put his own twist on his powerpoint presentations. I barely used the textbook. Tests are easy and usually curved.
He isn't a great teacher, but he talks about everything you need for the tests. His tests are easy (because he provides past exams that are really similar and sometimes even have identical questions) an he curves in addition to that.
Smart guy, but he seems more interested in his research than in helping students.
Dr. Gardinier teaches well and makes great jokes during lectures. He does a great job during class but was not helpful to me in office hours. He posts past exams online, so study those to get a good grade. The tests will be very difficult otherwise. I only used the book to study, with all HW being online. You will have to work for your grade.
I found the class to be fairly difficult. The past tests he gives you are nothing like the new tests and he speaks in monotone throughout his entire lecture. At 8am it is very difficult to stay awake. He seems much more interested in his research than in teaching Chemistry 1001.
Professor Gardinier was not a good teacher because he simply read off his power points and isn't helpful outside of class. His tests are hard because you don't know if it will be all math or all conceptual: He doesn't have a balance and the previous tests he gives you aren't helpful. The tests are also only 20 questions making it harder.
I loved Dr. Gardinier. He always made lecture interesting, wether it was his language or demonstration of the Hindenburg, it was always fun to go. He said there would be a curve, which did not really end up happening, but the tests are not bad if you study. Also, he gives out previous years (4) tests to study from which helped a lot.
The first test was super easy, but it gradually got harder, but overall it wasn't terrible. Maybe not as good or as funny as I had heard, but he did try to crack a few jokes, too bad most of the class wasn't willing to respond since it was an 8am.
His lectures were long and boring but provided good notes on D2L. tests are average and require you to just look over the sample questions he gives. Lectures was basically nap time.
Does not go over any material well. Jumps right into examples and does not even do most of them on the board. Most of them he clicks through in his powerpoint and does not explain what is going on in the example. Seems like he expects you to know 100% of the information from previous classes.
Prof. Gardinier is the most mono-toned man I have ever met. It is clear that he is only at Marquette for the research opportunities and doesn't care about teaching. He tries to make up for the dry material by swearing and making sarcastic jokes. While they are funny, they don't help you complete the online homework. Would be lost without tutoring.
He is the classic chem professor. He is quiet & reserved outside of class, but if you make an effort he is very kind and helpful to answer questions. I wouldn't say he is the best during lecture though, since about halfway through class, his notes become confusing & he doesn't slow down to explain the more difficult topics. I did enjoy his humor!
Don't take Gardinier unless you're already good at Chemistry. Very dry & will leave you even more confused after coming out of lectures. His tests are tricky, less than 20 MC questions, and he doesn't give clear guidelines as to what you will be tested on. I will give him credit for allowing me an emergency exam extension, though.
Speeds through power points and doesn't explain how things happen, just states the end result and expects you to apply that information. Lectures don't really make sense until you've gone through the entire chapter. Tests are brutal in that they are only 16 questions wrong so you really don't have any room for mistakes. VERY HARD CLASS
Honestly not sure why this guy gets so much flak. His lectures are funny if you should choose to go ( I did not really). Just read the textbook to teach yourself and go over his practice exams that he posts for the exams. They give a good sense of what to expect. I liked this class cause you didn't have to be good, just better than everyone else.
I dont know why people think hes a bad professor. Tests were hard since its mostly conceptual with 18-20 questions each test, but gives a huge curve. He could be more organized in his PowerPoints, but if you have time to go to his office hours, hell make you understand. Hes a very laid back teacher.
Do yourself a favor and avoid this guy at all costs.
Might be the worst teacher Ive ever had. We sit in lecture and he speaks in terms that no one has heard of, and doesnt feel the need to explain anything. He goes way too fast and skips through his confusing powerpoints, and assumes people already know how to do everything in chemistry even though this is an intro class. Most monotone voice ever.
This guy is quite simply a terrible teacher
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. He is a professor that does not care whatsoever if what he talks about makes sense. Mumbles through confusing slides and spends more time trying to come up with jokes for his slides than actually putting in relevant information. His tests are ridiculous and he has made me strongly HATE chem. Doesn't know how to teach.
Took AP chem before this class, if I didn't I would have failed. Doesn't explain ANYTHING that is actually important to chemistry. RARELY gives examples and instead talks for an eternity about crap that doesn't matter. good luck if you have him
monotone and boring. his lecture slides have too much content on them and are extremely difficult to understand. be prepared to self-study the entire semester. I never even touched the textbook. he curses occasionally during lectures which is kinda funny, but just laugh along with his jokes. tests are ok, but that curve tho. lifesaver.
Tests are 15-20 questions that cover a ton of material. So if you miss just a couple questions it greatly impacts grade. 4 tests and the final are 64% of final grade. Power points do not make sense when trying to review them since they're cluttered with arrows, memes, confusing terms, and irrelevant information you don't need to know.
DON'T TAKE GARDINIER!!! His lectures are vague. He talks to you like you are 5 years old or like you have a Ph. D. in chemistry. There is no in-between. Take Noble or Reid if you can. I only got a good grade because I read the textbook and went to tutoring.
DON'T TAKE GARDINIER!!! His lectures are vague. He talks to you like you are 5 years old or like you have a Ph. D. in chemistry. There is no in-between. Take Noble or Reid if you can. I only got a good grade because I read the textbook and went to tutoring. If you have Gardinier, please look for someone else!
Prof. Gardiner's monotone voice can lull any Freshman to sleep for a peaceful 50 minutes. He posts all his slides to D2L which is really nice but his lectures can be confusing and convoluted even to the most focus students. He posts discussion sheets and end of chapter q&as on D2L when it gets close to exam date. A real G.
Please please please do not take any of professor Gardinier's classes. He does not explain one thing to the class, and it doesn't help that his slides are just as bad as he is... The only thing that saves people when it comes to his tests is the fat curve because the averages without it are around a 40%. Worst professor I've ever had
Do not take this horrible excuse of a teacher. His lecture slides are very disorganized, which makes taking notes hard. The class average for tests is routinely below or around 50%, which is horrible. This is a reflection on the professor. Be prepared to teach yourself everything, as going to lecture is practically useless.
Unless you're willing to teach yourself every single topic presented in class, you should avoid Gardinier at all costs. Granted, never reached out to the dude in office hours but his lectures were just plain confusing. Tests are short and hard. Not a good time.
Easy, spend time outside of class and understand all the practice tests going in to the exams. He gets a bad rep because people don't understand that this is college, not high school. Freshman chem is a medical field weed out class, meant to discourage people from continuing if the college was "too hard". It's an intro level class take a hint
Don't skip out on class! He does many examples in class and the way he explains them makes them easier to do. Make sure to read the textbook either before or after class, and do the problems in the textbook. The more problems, the better. His exams are very representative of the final exam you will be taking that's standardized. I highly recommend.
Worst professor ever, did not know how to lecture and tests were very difficult.
He is a nice guy but FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS. You are better off on the regular or honors sections with a different professor. Lectures are confusing and you will have to learn everything yourself. There are a few practice questions, but answers are never discussed or explained. I don't feel prepared for next year at all.
I would say my biggest issues with Dr. Gardinier weren't really the tests or any of the assignments, they were with the manner he taught the material. If you came into the class with a decent level of understanding of the material being taught, you were pretty much guaranteed a good grade. Otherwise, you had to fight for every percentage point.
You can tell this guy is just at Marquette to do research and has to put up with teaching freshmen in the meantime. You're honestly better off going off-sequence in your science courses if that means you get to avoid taking Gardinier. He makes the class x100 harder than it needs to be and I was absolutely miserable. Avoid at all costs.
He was nice and chill but didnt teach the material very well, I learned more from the online homework than his actual lectures. There are weekly quizzes that were a hit or miss on difficulty, and be prepared to do a lot of homework. If you struggle with learning on your own, seek another professor.
Gardinier knows a lot about chemistry and that made his CHEM 1001 class a lot harder than necessary. The stuff he taught us was a lot harder than what the other classes did. He is quite sarcastic but he is really monotone so I wouldn't take him if it's an 8am lecture.
Professor is boring and just talks at the students and does not explain or teach.
Having Dr. Gardinier at 8 am is probably the worst thing you can do for yourself. He kind of mumbles when he talks and is monotone. The PowerPoints are very confusing when looking at them outside of lectures.
why am i learning about what my lab was on the day after my lab dont takte this horribe class i ahte myself
Had him for my 8am lecture, literally worst person to wake up to. He mumbles and it's super hard to pay attention to him. The exams aren't too hard but you have to teach yourself all of the material. Also the homework rarely has anything to do with the lecture and his class is a lot different than other CHEM1001 classes.
Very friendly but cannot teach
Probably the worst teacher I have ever had. He just mumbles and the slides are very confusing. The labs are paced with the other chem teacher, so we were given extensions since we hadn't learned the information yet. Even after the extended date he still hadn't taught the information! Homework is completely irrelevant compared to the lectures.
This is one of the worst professors I have had thus far. All of his slideshows make no sense and are very hard to follow, which makes it even harder to study. On top of that he is very hard to hear and understand he doesn't seem like he wants to even teach this course. The homework does not align well with what is taught in lecture.
Hard to follow, and doesn't explain the topics enough for an introductory course to chemistry. Doesn't seem like he even wants ot be teaching. Lectures straight off the slides, and the slides are filled to the brim with very advanced knowledge. Would not recommend for any chem class, take Nobile instead.
Prof. Gardinier is a tough lecturer, but his exams are fair and you'll likely score well on the exam if you practice outside of class. He explains much more outside the topic than you need to know during lecture due to his knowledge of the topic, but you learn to know what you can disregard from his lectures. Overall a tough professor but not bad
JUST ABSOLUTELY HORIBLE DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS
He can be funny at times, but he talks to you as if you're a senior majoring a chemistry. This is an entry-level chemistry course... Honestly, if you took AP Chem or high school chem at all, you'll do fine. Do all the practice problems he assigns, he pretty much gives you what will be on the exams. Doesn't suck but not my favorite class.
Absolutely terrible. Always behind on lab sections; we learned the material a week late. Only 4 exams and no quizzes. His monotone voice makes him sound uninterested, making you uninterested too. Slides are confusing and unclear, even worse on review. Makes things unnecessarily hard for an intro class. DO NOT TAKE. take Nobile instead.
I had his 8am lecture and it was impossible to stay awake, his lectures are beyond boring.
This class is manageable, but it's not easy. If you come in with no chemistry experience, expect to spend a lot of time outside of class to keep up. If you make use of the practice problems, you can pass, but be prepared for a more demanding experience than you might expect from an entry-level course as he gives way to much advanced information.
He doesn't seem interested in the topic, shown by his monotone voice. He quickly explains everything like it's just a review and we should already know the content. He's often behind in regard to the labs, and the only grades in his class are for the exams and a small percentage for attendance. If you didn't know any/much chem before, good luck.
Slides for class lecture are unclear. There is optional homework but no credit is gotten for doing it. Tests range from 20-25 questions but getting in practice is very hard and your grade just being dependent on exams is nerve wrecking. He has curves which help sometimes.
do not take his class. was only graded on exams and labs so was tough to maintain a good grade if you don't pass the exams. his slides really are not helpful, and lectures never matched up with the labs. he knows what he is doing but doesn't really know how to teach it
