salsa, anyone?!
He puts the "stud" in ethnic studies. Meow!
This guy always answers his emails from students, even on the night before assignments or presentations are supposed to be due. He is v encouraging to us who wonder if we're not doing so well. He tries to find ways to make things easier on us all if he sees some of us are having difficulty.
You want a hint? If you are having trouble with your presentations make an office hours appt. He'll discuss your performances in detail and show you how to get an A. Don't waste your time complaining about your grades before or after class time. You need to see him in a sit-down session. Worth it!
Really tries to see your point of view. Helps you see your weak spots in speaking b/c it's hard to get up there and just speak. A little boring listening to so many speeches especially if they're not interesting.
I was NOT intrested in this requirement, but he tries to make the class as bearable as possible with his jokes that he knows are lame, just to entertain us. I know he knows. He even said the word "badonkadonk" in class! LOL! The hardest part is listening to other student presentations if they're boring. But that's how life is sometimes. Just Deal.
really considers your abilities. he tries to make you feel at ease before you get up there to speak. answers your email quick.

EASY A class. Take it, no regrets. The teacher gives barely any assignments. Be on his good side and you will do well. At the end of the semester there is hardly any classes. Good luck.
Professor Garza is way cool! Best teacher ever. I now want to find out what he's teaching next year.
Then where is my socalled easy A? :(
EASIEST CLASS EVER! We had no tests, did 4 speeches. THATS IT. Dont use fillers and you'll get an A on all of your speeches. Only hmwk was discussion boards on blackboard. We didnt have class for 2 weeks straight for "meetings". Plus, the guy is really nice and laid back to the max. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!
EASY!!!!! Unlike other oral comm classes we dont have tests or lectures.. we didnt even have to go to class the last 3 weeks of school!
nice guy... easiest class I have taken by far
im so glad i sgned up for his class while all my friends were doing outlines for their oral comm i was out partying. he is an awesome guy gives you a chance at the end to make up missed points. he want you to do good.. take this class for easy A
Make sure u r prepared 4 the presentations. I made like I was prepared, but u could tell I wasn't. And he knows if u r wingin it cuz yr oganization and your fillers and yr body give u away every time. Still learnin. He told me he wants me to do my best. So do I. So do I. Such is life.
Too many really bad student speakers in my class (some real lame goons!). Non-threatening environment. His attendance policy could kill you, so show up. Don't skip your discussion board assignments. It brings your scores down. No essays, no tests. Just be prepared for your stuff.
This professor is animated, intelligent, funny, and organized.
He is Okay
Can't stand 2 give speeches, but he makes it as painless as he can 4 u. Assumes u don't need help unless u ask 4 it. Always availalbe on email. Tries to spot who's in danger and tells em before they screw up. Leaves u alone if he thinks u r doin fine. Compliments good work, warns stragglers. Online texts and Power Point stuff.
he can be very weird at times...if you have a small class, u never have to meet! all you do is give speechs but they are pretty easy. and no text book! overall, pretty easy class to have freshman year
purty sure he tires 2 b weird 2 take off intense attention from speakers. good tactic! diversion. I am so NURV in this class. But he takes focus off of you by bein funny or weird befor n after you go.
He is very funny and wierd, but his class is fun and small. You only give 6 speeches all year and you only have to memorize 3. He gives you weeks off at a time. Never use a book.
Very cool teacher. Tests are less than one percent of grade. Don't buy the textbook! Just watch your "umm's" when you're speaking in class. Six presentations that are fairly easy, just don't be so nervous. Fun class, easy A or B (I got a B). Oh, and there are two instances where he gives you almost a month off from class. Take Garza. :)
he is a good teacher
He's awesome! Can't tell you enough. Presentations get easier as the class progresses, and his grading system is real easy. Barely any quizzes, and you get a lot of days off from class! Make sure you go to class when you have to and you're allowed to miss one presentation. Other than that, take him. He's really cool =)
Learned more abt myself and how i deal with my own stresses and fear about stuff. scary but had to learn it. hated it. loved it. he's honest with you. show up for more points to your avg or grade goes down.
easy class. Garza is a real treat he is amazing and fun. the books ae not ever used so dont buy them. quizzes are not even worth a lot at all and you get a ot of time off of class.
seems really intimidating at first, but he is actually a pretty cool guy. as long as you do okay on speeches, attend class, and do the super easy online quizzes (that you can take with partners) than you will do fine.
BAD first impression, however he is a good guy. If you just listen to what he says you will do fine. Be careful with your fillers, be PREPARED (he knows when you are not), online quizzes super easy!! Take instead of OralComm! All of my friends were doing outlines while I had days off of class!!
At first, thsi guy is the weirdest ever. All i have to say is block your facebook and myspaces because he looks at them before class starts to "learn" about his students. This makes him a freak. But he's a great teacher. After we got past the internet stuff he really was a great teacher. If you are going to take CCS then take him as a teacher!!!
If you are looking for a class where you can get an easy A, this is definetly not the class. Yea, you do not have to make outlines like the other classes but you have to memorize 5/6 of your speeches while in the other classes do not have to memorize speeches. Oh & most, not always but most of the time the teacher knows when you b.s your speech.
bad first impression but do not drop the class it will end up being one of your favorites. All your presentations are with out notes except the first one which is the reading its not hard though to stand up there without notes though
He seems intimidating at first, but he is a nice guy. We use a lot of blackboard, so you have to check it everyday!!! most of the presentations are just 2-3 minutes, so it's not that much.
He's like a little Mexican Napolean, but a really great professor. I learned a lot from his class. Make sure to check blackboard all the time. Be prepared for speeches and practice practice practice!
LOVED this class. Take instead of oral communications. Interesting class and professor, never boring but he looks up your myspaces and facebooks fyi. Presentations are 2-3 minutes long and you must memorize them. If you want to pass, go to class for points (they add up) and do ALL the blackboard discussion board postings. Definitely recommend.
Dr. Garza is very intimidating to begin - and block your online social accounts because he will steal the pics and show them in class. However, this class turned out to be one of my favorites and it really helped my public speaking. Dr. Garza is def made an impression
Taught lots abt online social networking sites during 1st wk! Liked Dr G's opinions on all dat. Totally can find ANYTHING about u online & proves it! Crzy research skilllzz! PRACTICE yr speeches, dude knows when u didn't. Grades VERY high if practiced and organized speeches. SUPER low if u r lost or making it up last minit. Couple F's in my class!
Imposs 2 get an A if u don't do all discussion boards or show up for everyone else's speeches. More assignments than in the other COM classes, but no outlines due, so u can weigh the pros/cons. Time "off" is not really "off", just prep for Panel speech with your group. No essays or big tests. My grade: B- but thought I should of got at least a B+
Do take this instead of regular Oral Communications. It's an easy class, just do all the discussion boards and do well on your speeches. Hardly any work necessary and outlines are non existent!
Definately recommend! It's really a fun class if you enjoy being in front of others. No outlines or hw really. 6 assignments, but really easy if you're a good improviser. Garza may seem intimmidating at first, but he's really nice and helpful. He makes things 100% clear. TAKE HIM!!!
Awesome teacher.Recommend. Intimidating at first but he's alright. Easy class.Do all your discussion boards! No outlines, but you do have to memorize your speeches. If you at least try you'll pass.
He comes up with so many rules in his classroom. He criticizes students who do something that he doesn't like.
seriously...take him. yea, hes a bit intimidating at first, but this was my fav class in my first yr as a freshmen in college. if ur comfortable speaking in front of others, youll do great. theres one group project but i thought it was easy. i wish i could take him again.
I was so scared of taking him becauwe I had heard he was really hard but it was the complete opposite! He responds quickly to emails, is funny, and explains everything for presentations. Do discussion boards, he allows you to miss 1 presentation,& do the final!
While the idea of giving about 6 speeches with NO NOTECARDS is scary, I actually enjoyed attending the class. If you ask for help after class or during his office hours, he will be extremely helpful and kind. Great introduction to SDSU, especially if you find friends; it makes it better when you have to give a speech. Go to class-easy participation!
This is one of those classes with a huge B range. It is impossible to get an A. He will find something (often petty) to knock you on about your public speaking. He gives feedback about what went well and what didn't for presentations, but does not give guidance, teach or show examples of good communication skills. I absolutely hated this class!
I dont know why he has such a low rating, he is intimidating the first day but he really doesnt enforce everything, he was my fav. prof this last semester, class is very mellow and easy. He's funny and enjoys his job, great dude, he'll help you out if theres anything in your grade that needs some improvement. Overall great class.
I took this class to fulfill Oral Comm and i'm glad I did. Garza seems intimidating at first, but then is super chill. Speeches are pretty easy, drops the lowest one. Do discussion boards since they can drop your grade. I got an A just by practicing speeches the night before they were due. NO TEXTBOOK!
This professor pushes you to be a great public speaker. Even if you are not going to be one, he will push you until you meet your highest point. He is a really funny teacher. No textbook is required, no tests, no final, just presentations and discussion boards. Great professor I really recommended him. Make sure to call him by Dr. Garza.
Generally an easy class. He seems really mean on the first day, but he sort of grows on you. He is really funny and will make a tall joke about anyone taller than him. The presentations are easy. If you do at least 5 of your 6 presentations you will pass his class.
He is super helpful and very easy to get along with. I came into the class without knowing what it was and expecting it to suck but he made it fun and interesting and I feel like I really learned a lot about how to make a better impression of myself on others thanks to him. Always responds very quickly to emails and very eager to help you
Garza seems intimidating at first but once you know it he is very chill & fun. Class is not mandatory. The cool stuff is that you can drop your lowest score and replace it with your other lowest score. Just study the night before your speech and you will do fine. No texbook need it. Pracice, Practice!!!
Prof Garza was pretty cool but I just don't like public speaking in general (who doesn't?) but the ethnic studies aspect of this class was interesting to learn about. He tells us what not to do when presenting, but does not give us any solutions. I preferred this class to what I heard about COM 103.
This professor is so chill and funny, this was my favorite class. He is so easy to talk to and makes his classes not feel like classes. Like we would all just talk to each other like friends. He also doesn't use textbooks, so that was good to save some money. Definitely recommend CCS111A if you like oral presentations.
This class was the greatest mistake I have ever made. Upon signing up, I didn't know that this class was Chicano based. But there was only one real presentation regarding Chicano topics. Compared to Com 103, this class is so much more enjoyable! No tests, minimal to no homework, and Dr.Garza laid back and easy to get along with!
Great Prof! I was in a class where most of the students where foreign exchange students so it was interesting. I think I will get an A - He is supper chill, excited about CCS and tries to make things easy. Great Person and wants to help you learn.
TAKE THIS CLASS. Great alternative to regular comm no large/small lecture no book and an optional final. He grades fairly and drops your lowest speech. Garza takes the time to know his students and speech topics 2/5 speeches have to do with CCS. Extra credit show up to the class on the mandatory days and do your work you will pass with an A.
This was actually a great class. He makes everything look intimidating at first, but it's not that bad at all. He is super chill and is actually quite funny. Barely any HW and some online quizzes. The presentation topics are easy as well! Take this class if you can!
This class was extremely fun and the professor does not require you to show up EVERY SINGLE CLASS. You just show up the day of your presentation and you're good to go. He is very funny and will make a lot of jokes with the students. He will drop your lowest presentation score and fill it with your second lowest score. Also, the final is optional!
Definitely a better choice than COMM 103. No textbook, replaces lowest score with second lowest and an optional final. I was worried about this class since I don't consider myself to be a great speaker but I ended up doing surprisingly well. Definitely recommend.
WAY better of an option than COMM 103. tuethur, 1 hour each as opposed to having large and small lecture. Replaces lowest speech grade so you have the option to skip a presentation. Two 20 min lectures, online quizzes you can do whenever, no tests and he grades easier and easier as the presentations go on. Easy A for me! Final is optional too!
This class seemed WAY easier than what I heard COMM 103 had to do. 5 easy presentations, he specifies all the things you need to include to get an A. He often lets you out early. A couple of online quizzes, and discussion boards you have to submit (easy). No tests. My easiest class this semester and still improved on my speaking skills.
Great teacher, very chill class. He was super nice even though he makes fun of people but in the end, he's a very kind professor. I loved his class even though it was early in the morning.
Garza is the best Comm teacher you could take!! Definitely recommend this class. Only five speeches in-front of a class with about 30 students. Three small open note quizzes online that he allows you to do with a group. He ended our classes a month early. TAKE THIS CLASS!
Take this instead of Com! Garza is super cool and funny, but you have to have a good sense of humor and don't get offended easily. 5 easy speeches under 2 mins, 3 easy quizzes and DBs, and an optional final. He ended my class a month early, I highly recommend him. Also, he is a pretty easy grader.
Ended this class 3 weeks before finals. The final is optional. Very easy as long as you always reach the minimum time for the presentations. No textbook. No lectures. 3 quizzes. no mid term. Listens to students.
This is a good alternative to traditional Comm100. Its fairly straightforward. There are five speeches plus the final. You are allowed to skip one speech along with the final. We finish our course material early and didn't meet at least the last full month of classes, if not longer.
Easy communications class. 5 speeches and an optional final but you are allowed to skip one of the 5 speeches. Ended up only giving 4 speeches total and ended up with a B in the class. Would recommend this class as an easy alternative to COM103
This class is very easy to pass but not that easy to get an A. I've herd that it is way better than any other comm class. You get done with the class like a month before classes end, final is optional. Also, Dr. Garza is funny and helpful. No textbooks
Dr. Garza's class is very easy. You only have to attend class when there are presentations. Ended the semester 1 month ahead. Very picky about your reactions during your presentation but for the most part it is ALOT easier than COMM103. In CCS111A my longest presentation requirement was 4 minutes so not bad at all!!!
This class was difficult for me and definitely not an easy A. I would say it was easier than regular comm from what i heard also that it's easier to get an A in regular com depending on which small lecture TA you had. Not a speech person in general though
I hate public speaking and wrote every single speech the night before and still ended up with a B+. As long you practice your speeches and don't completely mess up, you should be fine. He doesn't allow any note cards unless you want an automatic C on your speech. Finishes class a month early & only have to go to class on day of presentation.
I hate public speaking, but I did really well in this class. If you practice your speeches, you should be fine. He lets you know on which days he requires mandatory attendance, so you can skip a lot of the classes with no penalty, but skipping the required days will really hurt your grade. He's very casual and humorous. I would take him again.
If you can get past Dr. Garza's pompous attitude and the strange way he runs his class he is a good professor that does care (to some extent) about his students. At the beginning of the semester he would make a lot of racially charged "jokes" that went way too far a few times. So if that bothers you, which it will eventually, pass on him honestly.
Take this instead of Com! It is so much easier. Garza is layed back and will literally help you with anything you need. There are four presentations total and no speech outlines. There is a syllabus quiz (which can be taken as many times as you want) and quiz on a video (he tells you the answers in class). All of class is spent watching others.
Definitely take this instead of COM, it's much easier and Garza is hilarious. He gives you super clear instructions and if you follow them you'll do well on everything. He's so strange but really fun to listen and talk to.
Garza is an excellent teacher and really helps you if you need it. I would recommend this over regular com 103. He finishes class early, and there are no tests except 4 mandatory speeches. He hands out a couple quizzes but they are relatively easy.
This is an easy class, but I can say I have learned nothing from this class. Everything I learned was due to my own research. Dr. Garza made multiple inappropriate jokes that were not enjoyable. I felt so unmotivated in his class. My class was cancelled multiple times; the last month I had no classes. If you want to learn, don't take this class.
One of the best Profs ever. Easy class. Easy A. Talks too much but this is how communication classes are.
Dr Garza was an incredible professor! The class consisted of 5 speeches w/ the 6th one being optional as a grade booster. Each speech required of nothing but pure memorization/personality (no outlines). Additionally, there are discussion board posts that help boost your grade. I loved his class so much because he really cared about his students!
The first day of class he is SCARY- don't believe him! He acts scary the first day, but then from the second class on he is funny and nice. He has some racially charged jokes, so if you're not into that, don't take him. But it's clear he wants all of his students to do well. Class ends a month early. Worth doing the optional final!!!
If u don't show organization clearly, yoru speeches get LOW grades. Uses ethnicity as a way to get u thinking about what it is and what it all means. Tries to get u to understand why there are stereotypes so u just need to own it and have fun with your ethnicity. Got me interested in Anthro through this class. Always emails advice and options.
Garza is my absolute favorite teacher so far. He is funny and caring. His class is relatively easy and he also makes himself available outside of class. We hardly ever met for class and most work was done outside of class and on our own. We had 3 essays all semester and 3 quizzes. Overall really great teacher. I would recommend him to anyone.
Can be a tough grader if you don't know your speeches. Does tend to go on useless tangents during class which can be boring. Luckily, he finishes up the class about a month early which is nice. The only part of the class you have to go to is speech days because you will get docked points for not going.
He is a very tough grader. Make sure you really know your speeches and follow his usual guidelines (organization, eye contact). There is a group project, which can literally make or break your overall grade. The worst score tends to be for the first speech. He finishes classes a month early and is very accessible outside of class and through email.
Easiest comm class, but he is very specific about how he grades and a tough grader. If you're scared of public speaking, take another prof. Notecards and powerpoints aren't allowed, everything is from memory, but you'll get marked down if you sound "memorized" or anxious. Overall, I became a much better public speaker and still ended with an A-.
Demanding, but everything he asks is clearly written in the syllabus and presentation prompts. Definitely WANTS you to succeed, but if you need accommodations, you gotta communicate ASAP. My only complaint is on quizzes: the detail of the questions asked isn't proportional to the class time spent on the concepts. Hilarious and a sweetheart.
Clear criteria, wanted us to succeed. As long as you memorize speeches and try, he will recognize it.
I personally was not a fan of Dr. Garza. There were definitely moments in class where I couldn't believe some of the things he said, he made many "jokes" aimed at race that were extremely inappropriate. If you are not a strong presenter and don't like speeches this is not the class for you (the whole class is basically talking in front of people.)
I took this instead of a regular comm course and its a good choice and counts for it. There are about 4/5 speeches that are only a couple of minutes long. Garza is a funny and cool guy. The speeches are graded kind of hard but you can do well if you follow the instructions. And they're way better than the 7-minute speeches in regular comm classes.
Dr. Garza is great! He's a semi-tough grader and really sarcastic but it's kind of funny. You're graded off of 4 super short presentations (one is a group project), and an optional final. He tells you specifically what he wants from your presentation and even has you practice in class beforehand, so theres no way you can fail.
I personally did not care for his class and hated his teaching style. He takes himself and his class very seriously and expects you to do the same even though most of the time it just seemed like he liked to hear himself talk, not actually teach. Beyond this, though I did well in the class his feedback was never constructive and almost always harsh
Super passive aggressive. Gives good outlines and clear expectations for speeches in the class, but grades them SUPER hard. All of the assignments are do-able, but do take time. He is very condescending on students and lectures make no sense. Takes forever to grade speeches. Responds to emails super fast.
I took this class instead of a regular comm class and I'm super glad I did. There are only 4 super short speeches, one is a group project and an optional final. His requirements are very clear, grading isn't as hard as others say, he's funny, and is willing to work with you on improving your grade. Small class size. I enjoyed this class.
Professor Garza often can be a bit out there with some of his comments and attempts at humor, but his class is definitely worth taking. All homework consists of Discussion boards and easy online quizzes you can do in groups and outside of class. The main grade consists of 4 presentations with an optional final. Ended class a month early.
Garza is super funny, and though he seems a little discombobulated at times, he is an amazing prof. 3/4 speeches (final is optional), a few online quizzes, and online discussion board HW. He responds to his email super quickly and is very straightforward. Class ends a month early!! Highly recommend.
I took AP Lit & Lang in highschool and was able to take CCS200 my first semester at sdsu. The class is based off of 3 essays (the last having the choice to be a digital project instead of an essay) and some grammar quizzes & discussion boards. We barely met for class but Garza is very accessible outside of class and he responds to emails quickly.
Garza is very clear as to what he wants from you as a student. He responds to emails almost immediately and is always available after class. All presentations are short (one being a group project), and the final is optional. Class ended a month early so put his class last in your daily schedule! I would 100% take his COMM class instead of 103.
A lot better than what I heard the regular speech class is like. 4 speeches, 1 of them a group presentation. Longest speech is 4 minutes, two are 2 minutes, and one is 1 minute. I was a bit overwhelmed in the beginning because the course seemed like a lot of work, but it was no hard at all. Plus the class ends a month early.
The class is relatively easy, just make sure you go. He is an interesting teacher to hear speak. He does things a pretty particular way, so follow those and you'll be good. Some of the presentation grades are tough, but afterwards you get an email with detailed feedback. Class was over about a month early which is amazing.
Very clear on grading breakdown. We barely meet for class, only in the beginning and when he was preparing us to write our essay. After we turned in our essays we didn't have to go to class for 1 and 1/2 weeks. We just had to meet with him to discuss our essay grade.
This class is what you'd expect from any English class. He cancels class whenever possible and I never had to stay for the full time. He gives good feedback on essays and does whatever he can to cushion your grade. A great professor that wants to see you succeed!
My semester is diff. b/c we only had 3 presentations, the 4th one is optional. He is very clear on what he looks for, helps you practice. Gives alternative options instead of presenting. I only presented twice this yr (1st pres. & 4th pres.) I got an A on both. Grading can be tough b/c he has a group of ppl that do it for him. DB's are graded tough
This class is not easy, but once you get over the initial intimidation of the class, it isn't too bad. Garza often cancels class, the class itself ends about a month before the semester is over, and the final is optional. Though communications class is something many dread, Garza is straightfoward, but a very hard grader.
Grades were based on presentation feedback, discussion boards, and presentations. He is a very critical grader when it comes to presenting, however if you are comfortable with speaking, class ends early and is cancelled often. If you do well on the presentations and meet deadlines you'll be fine.
There was only 3 major speeches that were kind of easy. The final was optional and he gave you really in-depth feedback on your presentations. He was a really cool professor and canceled class often. He also ends the semester early!
Garza can be intimidating sometimes, but he is very helpful when it comes to helping us present and making sure we can do it right. Only 3 presentations, final is optional, and simple assignments/discussion boards on the side. He will do everything in his power to make sure you pass. Solid professor if you want to finish the comm GE.
Garza is great. He is a very understanding person and he is very organized and I believe that's essential. He can try to be funny sometimes but there's occasions where it turns out bad.. He is very strict with instructions so follow through. I personally rented the ebook and literally only opened it once. Online is definitely better for presenting.
He might be a little specific on how he wants things done but overall. he's been a great help for students who don't do public speaking well. He gives great feedback and responds quickly to emails. Three speeches (one is a panel) but they're rather easy, so don't stress too much. No final exam but a final take-home activity worth 50 points. Easy A.
I really like the professor, but public speaking is difficult for me and I found that this was my hardest class this semester. The professor is reasonable and nice and he gives good feedback on presentations. That being said, he grades somewhat tough and it is difficult to get an A even with a lot of effort. Somewhat disorganized and arbitrary.
I loved Garza and this class! Of course the class is gonna be stressful when you have to prepare for speeches, but other than that it was pretty chill. He's a clear grader and gives feedback from classmates as well since we graded each other. Learned more about various Chicano figures and artists. Participate n you'll be good.
He stresses you unnecessarily about speeches, but overall it's not bad. Not my favorite, but okay choice for GE. Gives good feedback and helps you improve. Often Participate and don't be self-important. His grading n speeches is a bit tough, but it's fine because he gives a lot of points on other much easier assignments that make up for it.
The class is centered around speeches (no notes), so you really can't pass without coming to class and really preparing for the presentations. Garza is really funny, laid back, and a fair grader. Big group project at the end of the semester which sucks, but Garza gives great feedback and support leading up to the project. Awesome Professor!!
Prof. Garza is a solid choice. Compared to other COMM classes, I felt like it was pretty easy. Class basically ended a month early but content was interesting and Garza is engaging! My only complaint was that sometimes assignments and quizzes popped out of nowhere and we had little notice to do them. Nonetheless, it's a good class!
i liked dr. garza a lot. i looked forward to his class and you can tell he knows about so much which makes class engaging and interesting. i did stress on the presentations a lot because you cant have any notes but it'll help in the long run and there's not really homework which makes up for it
I didn't know that this class was different then regular COM when I signed up. He definitely has higher expectations for his students than the regular COM class. The speeches have to be very well researched and professional. You are only talking about Chicano topics which makes the memorization harder. Have to be a good public speaker to get an A.
I have a disability plan and he was the least accommodating teacher. Had to do credit/no credit because there was no way I was getting an A. Doesn't answer your questions, tells you to ask your classmates making it their responsibility. If this class isn't the only comm class that fits into your schedule like it was for me, do not take it.
Professor Garza is a great teacher and very friendly and kind. He will always answer your individual questions after class and cater to your specific needs. He makes it very clear what you need to do to get a good grade and it is not that difficult if you follow directions. I Would totally recommend taking his class you wont regret it.
Pretty unorganized overall and I noticed a lot of the TAs go on power trips and grade harshly. You have to be really on top of your schedule for his constant pop quizzes. Would be a solid class if it wasn't for the grading system.
he is kinda tough but the class is easy. get on his good side for sure
Dr. Garza's presentation guidelines - and class dynamic - are a bit specific and eccentric, but they greatly push you to improve your speaking skills. There are 3 presentations, last one is with a group, and there was no final, only a written course reflection. Prepare for your presentations AHEAD OF TIME and don't be afraid to ask him questions.
took garza for my ge oral communication requirement and he was great! very tough grader tho, he's very picky on his work and wants it exactly how he asks. Other than that he's easy! we had 3 presentations the whole semester. Great course
As long as you put in effort(tbh not a lot of effort is necessary) then you should be fine. He can be specific about some things so I would suggest going to class. The grad students are the ones who grade your presentations and they can be pretty picky when it comes to that. He was very nice and funny. He's always willing to help raise your grade.
Garza is a very good oral comm teacher and is fairly easy. If you just show up to class and do the work it's an easy A.
easy class if u do pay attention on lecture days, assignment details. makes requirements clear for A grade. quizzes easy, 4 discussions. be prepared for 3 speeches!!!
Garza is an okay professor. He wasn't mean, he's kind but he was overwhelming. No organization whatsoever. The class itself was good and not so difficult.
Garza is down to earth. You will find yourself overwhelmed at times , his organization is poor but what helped me easily was asking your peers or clarification after class. Be prepared for memorizing speech projects. Not difficult just keep track of announcements and due dates
Seemed like he was making up the curriculum as he went and made weird jokes at times. The class is pretty easy & would recommend over other comms classes but the assignments are unnecessary since he's very particular. 3 speeches all semester and if you memorize them and do all the other assignments you'll get an A.
This is a very easy class to pass but not very easy to get an A in. There are three or four speeches but you can not use any sort of notecard so if you're filling a comm requirement take a normal comm class. The average grade on speeches in my class was around a 65 but it will make you better at public speaking.
He made a few awkward jokes at times. Overall, he was a good professor, however, at times the class felt somewhat unorganized but the class was easy. Practice your speeches enough times and you will do just fine.
WOULD NOT TAKE AGAIN! He isn't a difficult professor just very unorganized. He's very picky with how he wants things done. He also will take away points from your work for the smallest things and for no reason. He can make inappropriate jokes and is very passive-aggressive.
My first impression of Dr. Garza was definitely "introvert's worst nightmare." After some time, I've found that he's not all that bad, just could be a bit more understanding. If you absolutely cannot talk from memory and in front of a class, your best grade is 70/100 for all speeches. He's also oddly strict with emailing format.
Dr. Gar. a may be a hard course for first years to take. He talks a lot and goes off on tangents, but his work is fairly easy. Tough grader on your speeches, and likes things the way he likes them. 2 solo speeches, and 1 group speech, final is a paper.
He goes on tangents, very specific criteria w/ assignments but , you should be able to adjust . He is a strict grader. there are 2 solo Oral presentations and one group presentation. he is always available outside of class to help if needed. If you are not good with memorizing presentations, you can read it out loud for an automatic 70/100.
actually hate him. this class was a joke and he clearly didn't care about it. would literally bully students for no reason and make weird comments. goes on a lot of irrelevant tangents, super unorganized, guidelines for projects + speeches are insanely specific and will doc you a lot of points for forgetting something that he didnt even mention
The speeches were not hard but you have to make sure to compose yourself fully during your presentation if you will get points marked off. However, as long as you try to present you will pass and you can take the tests outside of class with others. For the two last speeches, you had to work with others which is kind of a pain.
First impression wasn't great, overwhelmed the first class and made me want to switch I'm glad I stayed. 3 speeches the entire semester and you have the option to not present and still get a passing grade. The tests were simple. Unorganized but asks the class when the deadlines should be which is nice. Short lectures, don't usually have homework.
Professor Garza has a specific teaching style that can take some getting used to. The class assignments are detailed, but using resources like Unstuck ai for speech prep can really help. Overall, engage with the material and you'll learn a lot, even if the grading is a bit strict.
Professor Garze cares for his students a lot and will get them the help they need to succeed in this class. If you put in the effort outside of class to prepare for in-class presentations, you will be fine.
He was a nice teacher but it was kind of hard. All the speech prompts were very weird and kind of hard.
He's a little weird but in a funny way. Overall clear on what he wants in speeches, only 3 in the sem. Group project was barely a group project. Didn't show up for a month because he said we didn't need to. Understanding and Says you need textbook, show up for review sessions and he gives you answers. Super cool comms! Don't need to be Chicano
Good professor. He may seem a little intimidating at first but he's not bad at all. He has very strict instructions but as long as you follow them you'll be fine. You can opt out of all presentations and get a 70/100 for that part of the class if you don't want to present in front of the class.
Garza is my goat. He makes all the assignments super clear and wants you to get a good grade. You can also not present and get 70/100 which is passing.
While he doesn't take attendance I would recommend going since he doesn't record his lectures and a lot of assignments are explained in the lecture. He is very passionate and explains things very well. He is a bit tough when it comes to grading the presentations, but not too bad.
Super rude and inconsiderate to students who don't have access to printing things out. Has a habit of making fun of random students and purposely trying to make people nervous before presentations. Doesn't grade anything himself and takes off way too many points for inconsequential things.
On the first day, he told us the class would be tough and even suggested dropping it if we weren't ready. It felt like he was trying to scare us. But after our first presentation, he lightened up and really focused on making us feel comfortable presenting in front of the class.
Dr. Garza genuinely wants to see his students succeed, and it shows. He will call you out if you're doing poorly in his class and he is very direct in class. Although it is a com class, he makes it inclusive, and he is overall a genuine teacher who wants his students to do well and succeed, and it truly shows.
Easy class but is ran in a strange way. He gives so many options to simply pass the class if thats all you care about, but getting an A is also really easy if u put in a little bit more effort. Can be a bit confusing at times since he talks so much and kinda gets off topic a lot. Overall extremely simple class if u stay on top of the work.
