His lecture is clear and well-organized, frequently it's also entertainting.(We played Jeopardy to learn computer hardware once)Welling to help students, and the exam review is so helpful!he guides you to the right direction. Grading on efforts rather than absolute accuracy. He gives chances for us to improve our grade by simple yet helpful activity
Great Class! I learned a ton and enjoyed being taught things which I use every single day at work. He keeps your interest by telling hilarious stories when the class may tend to drift on a difficult topic. What I like most about his teaching is he?s energetic and loves what he talks about!
Uses sources other than textbooks to keep the class interesting and entertaining.
Prof. Gaskin is one of my favorite professors. He's laid back, humorous, super helpful, and has an excellent understanding of how to make Information Sciences exciting, even to Management majors. He incorporates some cool projects into the class, such as creating a video game and a web page. He also uses YouTube and Wikipedia to help students learn
My favorite Professor here at BYU so far. Didn't even know what ISYS was before this class and now I'm thinking about Majoring in it. Makes class fun and interesting and you learn a lot! Great class, great prof! Take this class from Gaskin!
Professor Gaskin is a great Professor. He made me love a very difficult course. Highly recommended you take this class from him.
5 thumbs up. If you're going to take IS 201, take it from Gaskin. Very clear and straightforward and even pretty funny. You don't even need to do the readings with this guy... which is awesome. But do them anyway, it's good for you.
Professor Gaskin was an awesome teacher that kept things interesting. His attitude really helped me pay attention and enjoy the class. If you are willing to put the time in and wrap your mind around the concepts you will do well in the class.
Gaskin is a brilliant man. ISYS has to be a tough class to teach, but I suppose he taught it as well as anyone could have. Rather than giving lengthy lectures, he gives just the meat of the material to you in each class, a teaching style which some love and others don't. Overall, would I recommend him? Yes
Fact of the matter is this class takes work and their are a good number of projects due, but Gaskin is a great teacher, no BS kinda guy that regularly would not go over something he thought would be a waste of your time. He makes every class engaging, which helps you learn the material really well
He's very good with computers, you might have a hard time keeping up with him. He's also awesome. Take this class from him.
Professor gaskin is awesome. I really loved the class. He is a really good teacher and is really helpful. This class can be hard, but professor Gaskin always is willing to help.
Best teacher for isys 201. Will be a difficult class if you don't know computers well. If you do then you'll have a couple late night, but not too bad.
Gaskin is great teacher. He really cares about his students. Most students dont do well on HTML so if you can own that, you'll have a huge advantage. The tests given in the testing center were more difficult than the in-class tests. Isys 201 tests are now the same department wide. So, the difficulty level is the same regardless of the teacher.
Professor Gaskin is a good teacher, but I wouldn't say he is a great teacher yet. He's relatively new, so I think with time he'll be really good. He knows his stuff, but I felt he was a little disorganized and disengaging at times. If you work hard (because this IS a hard class), then you should get a decent grade. Always seek help when needed.
I really enjoyed IS 201 with Professor Gaskin! I learned SO MUCH! It was hard, but totally worth it. Professor Gaskin is relatively new and still figuring out his style. Don't be fooled, the final is MUCH harder than he or his TA's let on. You need to figure out how to do stuff in VBA that was never mentioned in class or any reviews. He is great.
Great teacher. I hate technology but loved the class. It has a lot of stuff that seems like it could be useful in everyday life. Take it from this guy.
Professor Gaskin is amazing! The material is hard but he is a great teacher and good at explaining tough concepts. He is a phenomenal guy who does take an interest in the lives of his students. If you have to take this class, take it from him!
Brilliant professor who is patient and willing to explain concepts until you fully understand them. Read the assigned packets, watch all the YouTube clips, and ask questions IMMEDIATELY when you don't understand something are the three keys to success in Prof. Gaskins class. Oh, and google is your friend too :)
One of the hardest classes I have taken so far, but I wouldn't have been able to do as well as I did without Dr. Gaskin. Learned so much and he loves this area, which made it much more interesting. Stay on top of work and utilize the TA's, but definitely recommend taking from Dr. Gaskin.
Super awesome professor! Learn a lot and laugh a lot~ You will never regret to take his class~
Best teacher i've ever had at BYU. Very funny, straight forward, extremely helpful, gives huge hints for tests and anything graded. Curved class even though it was above the bus school needed average. Definitely knows his stuff- has a PHD in IS. If he is an option, take it from him! you won't regret it, or get an easier grader and still learn a lot
Professor Gaskin is awesome! He is very clear and straight forward in his teaching style. He'll give you hints & prepare you for tests & projects. One of the hardest classes I've taken. The final will kill you if you don't study & practice, practice, practice the material. Learned so much from the facts of the day that Gaskin gives during class!
Great professor. Gaskin is engaging and made the class interesting. A little disorganized at times, but if you keep up he gives you all the info you need.
Dr. Gaskin is a phenomenal teacher and his IS 201 class was easily one of the most interesting, informative, and interactive courses I've taken thus far!
This guy is legit. Clear, fair, and cool as hell, he's on your side from the beginning, and gives more than enough helpful hints for you to succeed in the class. He also curved the class by more than the department average, which is a beautiful thing. You should take 201 from him. Seriously, go to byu edu right now and register for his section.
Prof. Gaskin is the man!!! Seriously, I wish he could teach all my classes at BYU. He has so much passion for the subject he teaches and is just a great, down to earth guy. This made him very approachable and personable. I could ask him questions without feeling embarrassed and he could usually catch my early mistakes before I was completely lost.
Gaskin is hilarious and he makes information systems bearable for someone like me who doesn't really have any experience with computer programming. Class was fairly easy up until the last module, VBA. It jumps from like a level 2 to a 10 on the final, so beware of that...
Professor Gaskin is great very knowledgeable about all things computerdom! Theres a LOT of material in this course, but he does a good job covering it all. The class is offered as an online course, but class attendance is VERY helpful. Exams vary in difficulty, depending on the topic; some exams will press you for time. Overall good experience.
Professor Gaskin in a nutshell: Proposed to his wife after like a month of dating, daughter memorized all the countries in the world before she could talk, has been on Opera, was lined up to be SpiderMan before the company sold the script and the new company contracted Toby Maguire, can backflip(and will if encouraged). Great professor.
Gaskin is a great teacher! He really pumps you up about the class and is very honest about the curriculum. He keeps you updated on everything you need and is really conscientious about the students even in big classes. He knows the struggle! Gaskin is great and if you have to take this class, I definitely suggest him.
The content of this class is invaluable. Dr. Gaskin is a gem. If you don't do well on a midterm due to extraneous circumstances just go talk to him he is very understanding. Spend a day on the WebDev and do it a day or two before it is due. He gives lots of extra credit. The class is easy the first 3/4 and then picks up end of semester.
Dr. Gaskin is a great professor. He teaches the subject matter in an engaging, hands-on way, being sensitive to the different skill levels that exist in the class.
This is a tough class especially the last 4 weeks but it's manageable. If you don't get VBA down you will be punished on the final so make sure you really practice. Class moved very fast for me but some of the TA's are really good so go to the lab often. Recommend taking it from Gaskin cause Jenkins doesn't do points back or appeals.
This is one of the best classes I've taken at BYU. Dr. Gaskin is the best!! His lectures are really funny and engaging. Plus, everything you learn in this class is really useful and cool! Class is basically a review of the textbook chapters but it helps to go and review everything. 10/10 would recommend.
Gaskin is GREAT. I took the online section of his class (I went to class about 1/3 of class periods). It is a TOUGH class. You're coding and doing advanced excel and access work, but the skills you learn are invaluable. Go to the TA lab EARLY, they know their stuff. I had some late nights, but overall very enjoyable. Gaskin makes it worthwhile!
I have some coding experience, so this class was not too hard for me at all. I took this as the online option, and I have really liked it. Gaskin sends an email weekly to give study tips and whatnot to brace you for the week. The course load is not too heavy, but it can sneak up on you if you do not keep up. All in all, take this from Gaskin
To be honest, I spent the most time a week on this class out of all my classes, which isn't Dr. Gaskin's fault. I believe the content for the class is the same no matter the teacher. That being said, Dr. Gaskin is an understanding person. If you don't have prior experience with the information covered, to get an A can take time, but you can.
This has been the most useful class I have ever taken! I knew nothing about computers before this class and now I feel like I have something to put on my resume. I actually felt like this class was worth my tuition money! It's not hard if you practice, especially VBA.
Professor Gaskin is great. This is the most useful class that I have ever taken! There is quite a bit of homework, but it isnt bad. He is a very fair grader and wants everyone to do well!
This is a great class! I'm generally scared of computers and could only take the online section, but I had a great experience. Prof. Gaskin/the TAs always get back to me quickly if I have questions, and the textbook/videos are thorough and (fairly) easy to follow along. If you put in some time, you'll learn great things and have a good time!
He's a very good teacher. He is very clear and his lectures are enjoyable. He is very accessible and responds quickly. Highly recommend.
Prof Gaskin is hilarious and always has interesting and rather impressive stories about his life. He is really good at explaining difficult concepts and if you do well in computer science this class will probably be really easy for you.
If you consider taking IS 201, definitely take from Dr. Gaskin. His lectures are so enjoyable and give you an idea of what the test is going to be like.
The benefit of actually going to class is that he drops hints of things that will be on the test that are rather difficult to do, given that tests, although open-note, are timed and can press you for time. Gaskin is a great person, super charismatic and ingenious, and accessible within minutes 24-7. PRACTICE forVBAsection- it is hard but I got an A
I love Dr. Gaskin. He's an excitable little nerd, in the best way possible. He is good at gearing his lectures toward the test material. I looked forward to going to class everyday! I learned a lot of helpful things that were completely new to me.
The class is totally doable online (as it's structured to be). I am not a computer whiz, and I took this class along with accounting, finance, IS110, and an OCI but still did really well. The key is PRACTICE (mimic everything done in the online videos) and TA HELP (go early because they get swamped a couple days prior to due dates). You can do it!
The class was interesting, but taking it online was a mistake for me. It is incredibly hard to keep up and know what's due when. 1 of the most stressful classes I took. Super great guy, and quickly accessible through email, but I would recommend taking the in-class section to stay oriented.
Professor Gaskin is very smart but can dumb stuff down very well for us who are new to coding. After taking this class, I decided to apply for the Information Systems major. Follow closely in class because a lot of what he does is basically the same as the homework, but he might not tell you. Just secretly helping you...
You can tell right from the start that Prof Gaskin knows what he's talking about: he's young, he's dynamic, and he often shows the class his own projects in order to relate what he's teaching to the real world. His class gave me a ton of skills for me resume while remaining well-paced. I was afraid of coding classes but he changed my mind about CS
IS 201 isn't hard, and Gaskin makes it even easier. If you want an A, take it from him. The tests and homework are easy. Less than 1.5 hours per week, on average. He tells a lot of jokes, but some aren't that funny. Class usually includes some type of plug for the IS program, so you can usually show up late with no repercussions.
Loved this class. He made learning about technology and programming fun and easy. I did well in the class because I am a hands on visual learner. Almost every class was him on his computer showing us how to code in excel, SQL, or html and we just followed along. He never tried to trick us. Projects seemed ominous, but just need to be broken up.
I took the online section of this class, after previously taking CS142, IS110, IS115, and IS120. If you already have experience with coding, Excel, and/or web development, then those sections will be super easy for you as this is simple a surface level class. The reading was sort of a reminder for me of what I'd already learned. Worked well for me.
Professor Gaskin is awesome. I have never coded or done anything with computers in my life, but he made everything accessible and fairly easy. My course was on-demand online, so he sent out videos every week detailing upcoming assignments and exams. Not an easy class, but definitely a doable one.
Professor Gaskin is solid! His class is challenging if you haven't done any programming before, but having done CS142, it wasn't so bad. Just be sure to give yourself enough time for tests. The material wasn't overwhelming. Definitely would him. Rumor has it that he was almost cast as Spider-man in the 2002 Spider-man. Also he's been on Oprah.
Professor Gaskin is amazing. He is really helpful and understanding. The class has hours of videos that you have to watch, but the content isn't all that difficult. It is a really helpful class in preparing you to be successful in your future internships.
Gaskin is a funny guy, and made this class really doable. It was an on-demand class so he wasn't around much, but he provides every opportunity for you to do well. Definitely get help from the TA's. The assignments can be time consuming and hard, but they always help a ton.
I took this class online, so there wasn't too much interaction with Professor Gaskin. He only posted a concise video once a week explaining what we could expect from the upcoming week. He seems like a great guy though. Reminds me of Babish from the cooking YouTube channel.
This was one of my favorite classes at BYU. Since it was online due to COVID, there wasn't much interaction with Prof Gaskin, but from the weekly videos and other communications he sends out, he is very awesome and understanding. There is a lot of material but the online textbook makes everything super easy to learn conceptually.
On-demand was a great format for this class. The video walkthroughs in the skills chapters really helpful. If you follow along with those videos and stay engaged you'll learn the skills and do fine on the projects/test. The skills learned are so valuable! Prof. Gaskin sent out short weekly videos outlining the week and giving good life advice
Loved having this class, great class to take during covid since it's all online. Prof Gaskin is so nice and sends out great little videos every monday that are 2-5 minutes and talk about deadlines, helpful tips, and a little motivational thought or fun random topic he wants to share with us. Class isn't too hard but it does take lots of time to do
Professor Gaskin is amazing. When I accidentally submitted my test after 5 questions, he happily restarted it for me and wished me good luck. The class does involve a lot of reading and videos, but the concepts aren't super difficult. But do make sure to follow along in the videos, especially when you get to the last few chapters.
On demand is a great format for this class. His weekly videos are always super helpful.
Great on-demand class! He does weekly videos talking about the schedule and gives some good, short spiritual thoughts. Super nerdy but really cool
I don't know why his ratings are so high. The class is very hands-off for him, all he does is send weekly videos telling us what's due that week. I ran into him once in person and introduced myself as his student and he was very cold to me. You have assignments due every Tues/Fri but he makes tests on Wednesday so sometimes you'll have all 3 to do.
I agree with the last rating as well. Professor Gaskin seems like a great guy & all, but he doesn't teach squat. Forget getting help from the TA's, the TA lab is beyond terrible. Also, he assigns chapter readings, quizzes, projects, and midterms in the same week. The flowchart project that was supposed to take "an hour" ended up taking people 5+
I really don't understand what this guy even does at BYU. He isnt the guy teaching you in the ALL VIDEO online course, and he does not offer any help when you are struggling. He pretends that this is not hard stuff, then assigns HW, MIDTERMS, and other stuff all in ONE week. He literally is not responsive at all, and you will hear NOTHING from him.
I'm super confused from the previous reviews. This is without a doubt the worst class I have taken at BYU. The main problem is that Prof Gaskin teaches NOTHING. That is not exaggerated. Also, I've never been able to receive help from the TAs. I have personally emailed him and he honestly doesn't care about what I say. BYU should let him go.
The only "lectures" in this "class" are old videos recorded before covid by other people as a supplement to in person lectures. Because we never received the in person lectures, we only see the how and not the why when trying to learn complex coding languages. You only get 2 weeks to learn the entire coding language too, which is almost impossible
I do not recommend taking this class from Gaskin. I'm sure he knows what he is talking about but he doesn't even teach. We just watch old YouTube videos on the 'textbook' and we are expected to know how to do it in just a few, poorly made and poorly taught videos. Way too difficult and he just sends his students to the TAs when we have questions.
WORST class, professor, and TAs I have ever had. He doesn't even teach. No lectures, no help at all. The only material given are old youtube videos that are no help for the projects on coding "languages" we're supposed to learn in a week and a half. Don't take this class, you're basically thrown out to the wolves to teach yourself.
I don't even consider him my teacher because I'm the only one doing any teaching to myself. He, nor the TAs, are any help at all. Worst class I have ever had. I do not feel as though he cares at all about us students or that we get taught these important skills for our future careers. Good luck getting any help from him or TAs, you can't reach them
Very hands-off and difficult class. Professor Gaskin seems really nice but did not receive much, if any instruction. Its difficult, be prepared to set aside a lot of time for each project, quiz, midterm, and test. When it says something will take an hour or so that directly translates to like 5 hours so heads up on that.
As many have said in the past, this class is by far the worst class I have ever taken. It makes me feel so badly to rate a professor so poorly, but this teacher does not even teach. Forget getting help from the TA's or the professor, because they have "too many students." EVERYTHING takes longer than it says. Just crossing my fingers I pass.
Absolutely atrocious class. Im confused by the polarity in reviews as it seems everything before Winter 2021 was positive. There are no lectures or any real teaching done. We learn solely by his YouTube videos from like a decade ago. TAs are impossible to get help from. If you can avoid this class from this clown, do it.
If I had to rate the actual course, I would say 10/10. Learned so many applicable things! Worked hard and learned cool stuff. However, this is a professor rating site. Professor Gaskin doesn't teach. It's not fair that BYU is still paying him. I learned 100% of the material from the textbook. I wish I had saved $ on tuition and just gotten the book
This is the worst class I've ever taken!! Gaskin DOESN'T do any lectures or any type of instruction. You have to teach yourself through the textbook and videos that are outdated and old. He doesn't even grade anything, so IDK what he has been doing all semester. The TA lab system is horrible; there isn't enough TA's to help the 3,000+ students.
I honestly don't even know what to say. I have never been more disappointed in a professor in my entire life. All of the ratings have been accurate. Such a disappointing professor. The lowest possible amount of teaching. He assigns incredibly difficult tasks without any explanation or teaching. It is so disappointing.
This is my fifth semester at college. Im a 4.0 student. Im not afraid of working hard for an A, but this class was absolutely ridiculous. All these bad reviews are not exaggerating. The concepts arent overly difficult but because this professor hasnt taught a single lecture and we have all taught ourselves exclusively, it has been miserable.
I was extremely disappointed in the lack of effort to teach anything shown by Prof Gaskin. Mid way through the semester he acknowledged that he had received MANY emails from students asking for help. The sad thing is, he did nothing different to help. The assignments and projects take hours to finish & the TAs cant help bc the lab is always full.
Unless this course material comes easy to you, this will be a very difficult course. Everything takes longer than you think it will. Because it is on demand remote and you are teaching/learning everything yourself, make sure you have/make a friend or two that is taking it as well. As you get stumped on projects/assignments that will be crucial.
Difficult class but doable if you're willing to work, and you do learn useful skills. TA lab is usually of no help. You don't interact with Gaskin at all, you just watch LOTS of videos by another professor. My advice: Leave plenty of time for each project and focus on learning skills, not memorizing since everything is open internet/book.
The hardest class I have ever done. The projects take an insane amount of hours. Professor Gaskin doesn't have lectures, we just watched old youtube videos. It is hard to get help from the Ta's because the Ta lab is always full and they aren't the nicest people. The things we learned were useful, but we had to teach it to ourselves.
His class was difficult, I won't lie about that. But his class is SO interesting, especially HTML and VBA. He also is super willing to help you out with whatever you need. I am very grateful for him as a teacher.
Did on-demand for this class, and it was a good choice. You just go through one or two chapters a week and your own pace, take notes, watch the videos in the chapters, and do an assignment every week or every other week. Never really saw Gaskin, you would just hear his voice in a weekly video, but he formatted the class well and you learn a lot.
Taking IS201 online from Gaskin is just not the way to go. I'm sure he might a great teacher in person but dang it was pretty terrible online. You genuinely teach yourself. The textbook was pretty useless. You can still do well in this class, but don't expect to actually learn or have a professor that actually helps you understand the concepts
Honestly one of the worst classes Ive ever taken. So many annoying things about this class. A ridiculous amount of material and so little direction into which material we should actually focus on. It constantly felt like the professors of this class arrogantly thought like their class was 10x more important than any of our other classes.
This class was the hardest ever. I literally would not have gotten the grade I got if it weren't for my friend being an IS major and basically tutoring me for 2+ hours a week, no exaggeration. What made the class so hard is that there was little instruction from the professor. He made a 15 min video to say what was due each week, and that was all.
I loved this class. Gaskin did a great job realizing this was an intro class and not everyone in there was planning to be an IS major. His class is set up so you can work as far ahead as you would like and can move at your own pace. You don't have to go to class, but if you do, he gives you pointers on the assignments. The load isn't too heavy.
There were some aspects of this class that were indeed difficult and time consuming but I feel like all the tools that are needed to succeed are given to you. Lots of office hours for both him and his TAs and the entire course is available and open starting day 1. Just don't underestimate how long the VBA unit and the final project will take you.
This class was fantastic! Even though it is online, you have all the tools you need to succeed as long as you are willing to put in the time. Professor Gaskin and the TAs were always quick to respond and help out. Very clear grading criteria and you learn great computer skills for business. I am happy I took this class and recommend it to anyone.
There are a lot of nasty reviews on here from people who took his class online during covid. If you take this class from him now and pay attention closely in each lecture you will be extremely prepared for every homework assignment or test. This has been my favorite class I've ever taken at BYU and I would recommend it to anyone.
Took the class online. No lectures and just the textbook. A lot easier if you have a study group to help with projects. They take a long time but once you get your code right there is no way to do bad on the assignments. Just don't turn things in late and you'll get an A.
This class was hard for me, but I am grateful I took it! Prof. Gaskin is one of the best professors I have ever had and genuinely cares about the success of his students. He even changed class policies this semester to accommodate more students. . I loved it even though it was a challenging class. Also, I recommend using the online TA lab.
Really good class! Material can get hard but he teaches it very well. His classes are fun and interactive and has the coolest stories.
I really enjoyed this class. The YouTube videos in the textbook were a lifesaver for the completion of the projects. Attendance is not mandatory but for some harder concepts I would definitely recommend attending. The TA lab is helpful and the in-class TAs are a big help too. Gaskin has so many cool stories, I would ask him about them!
This is a hard course but he is a very kind professor who wants you to succeed. I knew nothing about coding so this was extremely difficult for me but the TA's were very helpful and I really appreciated that.
One of my favorite teachers ever. If you want to learn the material the best from any IS201 teacher, you have to take it from Gaskin. The man is a literal genius. He teaches everything he knows from real-world experience, so you know what he teaching is real. He goes the perfect speed in class and teaches very clearly. Fun class. Take it from him!
Genius and great man
I love this guy. He is so funny and engaging. His classes flew by and a lot of times I didnt want them to end. He is super flexible on the schedule if we are struggling with things and he teaches all the essential stuff. Main thing is he is so enthusiastic and passionate that it makes it hard to hate IS stuff. Honestly the class was easy.
He openly accepts AI which is awesome and the class is pretty difficult not gonna lie. You have to buy a $90 textbook because all the work is done on there. I feel like we moved super fast through concepts so you'll have to read the textbook in depth for sure.
Professor Gaskin is great. He knows very well what he is teaching and he tries to always be available to help his students. The class is hard but you will succeed if you read the book and attend class even though it is not mandatory.
As someone who never did anything related to this class, I was way nervous. But he was such an amazing professor! He's super energetic and engaging, takes time to go through each step, and he and the TAs are available outside of class. Difficult class but an amazing professor! Taking this class from him has me considering applying to the IS program
Gaskin is the absolute best choice for this class!! Funny guy that makes all the lectures engaging and interesting but you can tell he's very knowledgeable. (With fascinating life stories while waiting on technology, too!) He teaches just as much as we need to know, and tells you if it's more. 10/10 would recommend and absolutely take it from him
Gaskin was a dope teacher. His class was very interesting and will probably come in useful for the future. Going to class is optional as you can just do the tests and quizzes all from the online textbook, but I felt going in person was helpful. He makes his lectures interesting and engaging. Overall a good professor.
My favorite professor ever! Cares about students and goes out of his way to help. Also answers emails very quickly. Amazing, if you are taking IS201 take it from him for sure.
Chill professor and tries to make IS fun.
Gaskin is an awesome professor and cares about his students. He is good at explaining things and will help you if you reach out to him. However, this class is super hard. It's easy to get behind, so make sure to stay on top of everything and get help. This is not an easy 3 credit course. The assignments, projects, and tests take a lot of time.
Such an awesome teacher. Quick at responding to emails. Such a cool guy, a real genius. Really cares about his students. What makes the class hard is the fact that coding is so new to most taking the class like myself. Eventually you get the hang of things and learn a ton. Open book, open internet, open ai. This was my favorite class.
I'm not a very tech savvy guy but I loved this class. The lectures were very entertaining and I find Prof. Gaskin hilarious. Some of the work was difficult but I learned a lot. Learning the basics to IS has helped me out a lot and he teaches them great!
I enjoyed this class! Lots of resources to succeed. Definitely a doable class if you put in the effort Gaskin's lectures were fun, but my only critique is that he didn't do much explaining during lectures. It was mostly watching him create a code rather than him explaining what things meant. He is very intelligent and I would recommend him.
Professor Gaskin is a really cool guy and a really good teacher. IS201 is naturally a hard class and Professor Gaskin did a really good job teaching us difficult subjects and helping us to understand the material. I would definitley recomend him to anyone taking IS201.
Took it as on-demand, and he is not caring about the students at all. He told students to go to the TA for EVERYTHING, including grades. When I emailed to him about an unfair grading method, he was very much reluctant to even deal with it. I petitioned out of his class eventually. If keeping a good GPA is important to you, avoid his online class.
Should be a 10 credit class. His online class has 0 explanation of the topics unless you can magically transform the IS textbook jargon into something meaningful. The homework and quizzes are not very clear. Seems like a great guy but this class is just not it. Do yourself a favor and take a light load or just use AI for this whole class.
Prof. Gaskin is hilarious and I really enjoyed his class! IS 201 is a difficult class for most students, but he gives you many tools to help you succeed including a chat bot to help with a lot of assignments. He structures his class so the hardest content is covered in the middle of the semester which means your final isn't too difficult.
Probably the hardest class Ive taken at BYU so far. This class is super homework, project, and test heavy. In past semesters everything was open book, notes, and AI but they changed it this semester so the tests are all closed book everything which is super hard when they encourage you to use AI on the other assignments. Do not take this online!
Great professor overall. He moves a little fast but it's really easy to get help. He keeps class really entertaining. If you're in the online session he will still let you come to class which is what I did and found very helpful.
I am taking this class online. The only difference between taking it online & taking it in-person is that there is not a lecture for the online class, so you have to learn everything by reading the textbook. I started attending class in person because it was impossible to do online with no teacher instruction.
He seems like a good guy. If you care about getting an A, you'd better know the entire textbook like the back of your hand because you will be tested on wildly specific questions. Test questions are also poorly worded and answers feel subjective. Additionally, I hate testing that isn't proctored because people cheat. This was on-demand. Good luck!
Loved IS 201. I wish there were less Big Quizzes (ie Midterms) because I enjoyed the projects a lot more and felt that was the best way to learn--there were a lot of random things you had to memorize for the midterms. Other than that, the class is set up so well and everything builds on top of each other so you can build you own website!
Dr. Gaskin very nice, he'll give you a tour of his cool office if you stop by during office hours. Took the on-demand course which only used the textbook. Would recommend the in-person sections as I personally found it harder to learn using just the book. There's a lot of coding, so would recommend learning some VBA basics or SQL beforehand.
Dr. Gaskin is one of the best professors at BYU. The class, material, and grading are straightforward. ChatGPT is helpful for course material. I was in the online section but found attending class beneficial. The TAs weren't very helpful since they often relied on ChatGPT as well.
Professor Gaskin makes IS201 fun, even for non-tech savvy students. While the coursework can be challenging, his engaging lectures and helpful resources like unstuckstudy make it manageable. Stay on top of the work, and you'll learn a ton.
James Gaskin is an amazing professor. It was super easy to pay attention in his lectures and he laid things out super clearly how to do the projects in class. It is very project heavy but there is plenty of TA help. I had no experience with coding before this class but I had an amazing time
I LOVE Gaskin!!! He is so hilarious and made class so enjoyable. He is very smart and successful. His teaching inspired me to major in IS.
Professor Gaskin is one of my favorite professors! He was hilarious, had entertaining stories he shared, and did a great job explaining complex subjects. He paced the lectures well for a class that relied heavily on technology and the TAs were helpful in class. AI and collaboration were allowed on projects which helped a ton.
He is really bad at teaching. He kinda just does everything without explaining. For example he will just start walking through something without explaining anything. You will need to go to TA labs or youtube if you actually want to learn. the content is hard and he moves fast he is really smart and he kinda just assumes everyone understands.
He is a really funny, nice guy. However, HE GOES SO FAST IN CLASS, I can't keep up. He's extremely smart and jumps around a lot without explaining, especially while writing code. Only very computer savvy people can do well in this class. Projects are harder then homeworks, and no matter how hard I try I can't do well on them. Im fs discouraged.
I loved Professor Gaskin! He is incredibly hilarious and interesting. His tangents (crazy life stories) are short, sweet, and to the point, and generally has the entire class laughing out loud. He is very fair and considerate about grading while still expecting you to work hard and put in the effort. Lots of help available if you're struggling.
This class is super doable without going. I went to class probably four times the whole semester and easily succeeded. Study and memorize the book and you'll be just fine.
