Class is useless, lab is useless, manual is expensive toilet paper!!!!!! EEEEEVVVVVVIIIIIIILLLL He owes me 78 hours of my life!!
Class is useless and he shouldn't be a teacher at all. drop the class if you can.
Professor Gering is a nice guy and when you have him for an actual lab instructor and not just one of the GSA's he's very helpful. People who rate professors should not judge them until they've had personal experience with them. The other reviewer just had a GSA for an intro lab.
Nice guy. Can't teach. If you are good at self-study, you may do well. Found I had to seek him out to get information that should have been presented in lecture. I got more from the study guide than from his little classroom games.
This guy can't teach. Period. His class notes (or rather, the lack thereof) are useless, which makes the online hw virtually impossible to do. When you ask him to go over a hw problem in class, he'll set it up incorrectly, so when you enter in the answer online, it's wrong!
horrible teacher, insists on using vectors to solve way too many things. Complicates most problems, doesn't prepare you for HW. No experience and also writes the worst lab manuals i've ever seen.
He seems nice but he just doesn't know how to teach. Taking notes in his class is very difficult, since his approach is usually unorganized and hard to follow.
A completely confusing man.
Grrrrrrr. (That was a frustrated growl). And I used to enjoy phyics.
From what everyone tells me, Gering's 10x harder than any of the other phy 1001 profs. And his questions aren't typical physics questions. I have a C w/ gering and a guy I'm tutoring in physics is getting a high B with Sawyer.
Gering can not teach. He is an OK guy, but he really should not be teaching at all. He makes physics way more complicated than it should be and is completely useless when you ask for help. His explanations in class seem to only make sense to him and he should stay locked in a lab. Do not take his class unless you are a born prodigy in physics.
Check, please. :~(
Lab manuals are useless, confusing, and don't help at all. He doesn't understand there are people at this school who have to take physics only for general ed and not because they're majoring in it. I am very interested in physics, but his lab manuals are impossible to read without a PhD in physics and are poorly synchronized with the actual class
At any costs whatsoever, AVOID HIM! He does seem to try, but not enough to help you understand the material. Without a proper background in Physics 1 (mechanics), you will probably not pass his course.
DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES TAKE HIS CLASS. If the other classes are filled then wait a semester and go w/ another teacher. Gering cannot teach! he makes you do WAY more HW than the other teachers and you cant pass his exams. He belongs in a research lab by himself. Its not worth ur time/money to take his class and fail to take it again so wait!
Hands down the worst teacher on this campus! Do not take him at any cost, It is a waste of time and money!
he has no idea of how to teach whatsoever. he provides a lot of random and useless material in class that will not be helpful for the exam or for the online hw or his work sheets. a lot of useless homework will be assigned too. he fails to explain the material in class making the course harder. time consuming. avoid him at all cost.
I do not know a single person who did well in this class. He is seldom engaging. As far as I know he has not taken any teaching courses. He is an author and produces the manuel that goes along with the course at Florida Tech. Avoid this class at all costs. If you have to rearrange when you are taking your classes so as to avoid him. Stay away!!!!!!
This guy is really smart but he can not teach to save his life. His syllabus says that his Physics 1 course is for people who already taken physics, and he only teaches to those few. Avoid his incoherent babbling at all costs.
Gering is nice. If you attend to class, do his homework, worksheet and study a bit by doing some random problems in the book u'll be ok. If you have any questions he will answer you in class or in his office hours. As long as you are not a lazy student you will be ok.
Lab follows the manual that he wrote. It is impossible to understand in parts and just plain wrong in others. First 10 minutes of class was spent trying to figure out what he meant with the GSA. No structured grading set between classes so your grade is based on how nice your GSA is.
writes everythong in indecipharable jargon making it nearly impossible to even figure out what is being asked. he creates a bunch of extra unhelpful assignments reducing time available to actually learn the material, which you have to do on your own.
He is a hard teacher but is fair and is willing to give everyone another chance.
Phys lab 2091. The lab manual is terrible. The lab is pointless. It is fairly easy to get an A but that depends on your T.A.
Gering is a good instructor. It's a little hard to focus and keep track of what he's doing in class sometimes, but if you put in the extra effort, you will understand eventually. You can't be lazy in his class. He is always willing to explain things after class and at your own pace. You have to be patient. Don't get disheartened. Nothing comes easy
Gering is very intelligent and a nice guy; however, his class required a lot of hard work, moreso than other teachers. While other peers were getting easy As with other instructors, I was working hard to get-maintain my B. If you take him, be ready for a special workbook + weekly long amounts of homework + ~hard tests.
Very boring lectures. Use the book to learn most of the material otherwise you will fail
He is a very nice person and tries his best to make things interesting, but lacks the ability to communicate with his students. You are not here to just make friends, but to learn as well, therefore unless you are absolutely sure you can teach yourself physics, do NOT take this professor.
Horrible teacher. Isn't clear at all, and tries to make life hard on the students. Isn't fair on grading. The worst teacher I've ever had.
Not clear and very confusing when he tries to explain the material. Stay away!
Was not helpful in fixing a scheduling mishap. Final exam included material not covered in lab.
Very troubling.
Very nice man, but just an absolutely terrible teacher. He's not clear on anything he's trying to teach, and his lectures are very confusing to follow in that the students aren't sure how to relate what he's talking about to the material we're supposed to be learning. I walk out of every lecture even less interested in Physics than I was before...
Mr. Gering is not liked by most students, but he really isn't that bad. His homework is on Mastering Physics online, so all the answers are online. However, if you don't actually work out the problems on the homework you are screwed. He pulls homework questions for his exams. If you do the homework, the class should be easy for you.
in general, phy is a hard subject . He is very helpful and you better used his help. some kids got the concepts really quick but i am one of those bio major students that just dont care about physics. A lot of work is need to pass homework and tests. I used the book a lot as reference and from a F (in mt) i got a C as a finall grade but i work hard
When you learn something new it should be basic so you understand. Gering goes beyond easy and it makes worse that I can't understand his teaching. I'm afraid to waste even more time going to his office hours. Find a TUTOR OR DROP THE CLASS IF YOU CANT TEACH YOURSELF. His Homework grading is super strict!
Firstly, for half of the time, you wont understand what he is trying to teach in the class. Secondly, his homework and tests are so tough. I referred 2 to 3 books to complete those and that too with difficulty. When he gives the first quiz, you feel like we said you all wrong, but later, you urself will understand. I will never take his class again
Gering is a nice guy but he certainly isn't cut out for teaching. I am an A student struggling through Physics 1. Even when I've sought help, he just simply can't relate the material clearly. Attendance is mandatory but I often sit through class wondering why I'm there. His examples and lectures make no sense; he really lacks clarity.
He makes you work for your grade. His grading is strict and his tests and homework are tough. You basically have to teach yourself; however, at the end of the course (if you make it to finals) you will know physics for sure!
Words cannot describe how bad Gering is. His lectures are profoundly boring, he has a low, monotone voice and you'll be unable to pay attention even without a smartphone. He fails to teach anything he puts on the tests and quizzes (which are difficult; he can't english). He attempts to do some commonly problematic HW questions and gets them wrong.
If you don't have a good understanding of physics to begin w/, avoid at all costs. If you do and get stuck here, try not to listen in class. Sounds like bad advice, but the content is easy enough imo, and I've gotten confused on things I thought were easy in AP physics after listening to his lectures. His wording on assignments is confusing as well
This was the worst class that I have ever taken. I spent EVERY day studying and I still got a C. His lecture makes no sense whatsoever so forget about writing notes. If you are like me and struggling make sure you go to class to get that 2% attendance. He makes his own exams so be ready to doubt your abilities. Drop theclass if you have a chance!!!
He is the worst teacher ever. His exams so hard and confusing. He makes his exams and he gives you a practice exam that even if you search it in google you do not find anything even similar. Basically, you will regret taking his class. Although, I was interested in Physics, I hated it after his class. His lecture is just waste of time. WORST EVER
Boring lectures, lots of homework, he can't answer student questions on the regular, unfair tests and quizzes.
Good professor, funny guy. Explains things fairly well if you pay attention. You don't have to take the final if you get a 95 in the class before the final. Lots of Mastering Physics Homework that isn't entirely helpful.
Professor Gering's lectures weren't entirely useful, as he teaches certain concepts better than others. His tests are crazy difficult and the large amounts of online homework are completely useless. His style of teaching can be quite confusing, especially with little physics knowledge. Test averages were very low, but he curved most of them.
I expected a lot more from physics lab. The focus isn't on finding mathematical relationships between physical quantities, but rather on statistical interpretation of data. I understand that this is important, but save the error propagation for upper division labs so it doesn't suck the joy out of intro. physics. Also, the lab manual is garbage.
He is the worst physics instructor. Pretty much everyone fail the exams. Dont ever take him. There are two exams worth 40% and final worth 35%. He assigns homeworks every other day and its not helpful at all.
Gering is just not that great. I would recommend you take anyone in place of him. The two exams are nearly impossible and worth 35% each. He assigns homework nearly everyday, and it isn't useful.
1) his lectures are in no way helpful. Stay home and study from the book. 2) get Chegg to help you understand the homework 3) his tests and quizzes are crazy hard.. fit doesn't even show who teaches what physics section because NO ONE WILL SIGN UP FOR HIS CLASS. He has not capacity to teach. He needs to go.
the exam is easy
He was very confusing during lecture. Also practice test and homework didnt reflect what was taught in class.
I am not a Physics major and I barely learned a thing in this class. His lectures don't help you prepare much for his quizzes or exams. I couldn't do a single homework problem without Chegg. When we all failed the first and second exams, he gave us MORE homework, but it only made our grades worse. He doesn't like to curve and he isn't helpful.
His class is awful. I feel like I learned very few things. The exams are extremely difficult, and he grades them very strictly. Nearly everyone fails both exams. I am happy to have gotten a C. He also doesn't like to curve. Get Chegg to do the homework, otherwise it's a waste of time.
Very hard. Doesn't teach the class very well and didn't get any help when I ask for it. Very tough grader on the tests.
One of the worst teachers I've ever had. Lectures usually consist of writing a single formula on the board, explaining it with hand gestures, and then showing a section of the textbook on the projector screen. Additionally, his exams are fiendishly challenging and he gives no practice tests or study guides. I liked phy in HS. I don't anymore.
If your taking Gering Withdraw. I switched from Gering to Harris and the teaching is completely different. Gering is a tough grader and does not teach, hes quiet and has no clarity. Had to withdraw in the end of semester 2019 Spring to maintain GPA. In Harris's class I have an A. Hes amazing.
Gering makes the class way harder than necessary. Instead of teaching normal, pre-planned lectures, it seems like he just pulls equations out of nowhere for no reason. He goes on large tangents with no relation, and initially didn't assign homework because he didn't want to grade. (That changed after everyone failed the first exam). Avoid!
I am shocked that Gering has such a bad rating on here. I learned a lot from him. He cares about his students understanding the material. I took him for Physics 1&2. I am a CS major so its not like I am a Physics genius, but I did very well and I actually know physics now thanks to Gering. Just bc its hard doesnt mean Gering is a bad professor.
He gives lots of demonstrations that help the basic understanding of a concept but he does not go in depth about the actual math. The tests are completely about the math that he does not really teach you.
The worst professor in this school
Don't take his lab! He makes things much harder and complicated than they need to be. He took the joy out of physics 1. I recommend finding another professor while you can!
I would not wish this professor experience on anyone. I'm sure he is a nice guy but his teaching style is very old-fashioned. His class is extremely lecture-heavy and just talks for the full 50 minutes. The grade is almost entirely based on exam scores so be prepared for that. He contradicts himself and he expects you to know material way above.
Words cannot describe how much I disliked this class. I really enjoyed having a final exam for a 1 credit laboratory course on a weekend as well.
Absolutely the worst, most abysmal failure of a lab class I've ever seen. The manuals are borderline incomprehensible, the reports are awful, and every class feels likely you're drunkenly staggering through the procedure not having a clue about what you're actually doing. Get a new lab coordinator, please, Gering isn't cutting it.
I thoroughly enjoyed AP Physics and my introduction to physics in community college, however Gering somehow finds a way to suck all life out of physics and make it as boring to look at as a rock. Actually, if you stared at a rock for an hour you might learn more about physics than he teaches. Withdrew from the class to do so.
The labs that Gering designs are awful. Glazes over anything imporant, there is no continuity in expectations for lab reports, lab manuals vary in format leaving GSAs guessing. Always asks about types of error in quizzes and final, but never bothers to explain or give the correct answers. It is a ridiculous amount of work for a 1 credit class.
Gering isn't the worst teacher I've had, but that's not saying much. His lectures weren't exactly helpful to me and he gave lots of homework, quizzes and midterm exams. The best thing about him is that he offers lots of extra credit and retake opportunities.
Not as bad as most people make him out to be. It's true that his homework is very difficult, but it isn't graded on correctness, and if you understand the solutions, you can do very well on the exams and quizzes as they are similar to the homework problems. Seeing as the exams and quizzes make up most of your grade, this can be very helpful.
Lab manuals were nearly incomprehensible. Most lab groups had to ask the GSA for help on most steps, and they had to go through how to apply nearly every formula used.
Very good professor, makes you understand the class rather than memorizing for finals.
The lab manuals for this class are extremely difficult to understand and usually require the GSA's help to even get past the first few steps. Additionally, it always seems as though I was missing some crucial piece of information for the lab report. If you don't have to, don't take this lab. It is way more effort than it's worth as a 1 credit lab.
I have never had a teacher that actually wanted to trick students to fail. Exams and quizzes were horrible. He never told us what to study for and just said it was over a certain span of chapters. I went to him multiple times for more help and he did not help at all. I tried so hard for this class including tutoring and still failed.
Probably the worst lab course ever designed. The lab manual is impossible to make sense of and there are little to no guidelines for what should be included in the report. The course is more focused on data analysis and interpretation rather than applying the concepts learned from the lectures. Also too much work for a one-credit class.
Mad hard quizzes and Tests. If you go to him for help you might just leave more confused. Good dude just thinks everyone should know how to do things and that is definitely not the case. Also terrible course structure is borderline impossible to keep up with.
You will do better in physics with any other prof at FIT. Last year I had to drop out of his course. Not enough time given on quizzes and hard to study for tests. Got a B in physics 1 and an A in physics 2 with other professors. Professors matter when it comes to grades.
He's ~as~ bad as most of the comments here claim he is, but it should *not* be taking me going to his office hours twice a week for 1+ hr at a time to maintain a B. He gives plenty time for homework not enough for tests/quiz. gives formulas on tests/quiz. I passed AP physics & im still struggling. Hes pretty passive about his students succeeding.
Be prepared to hear, "Failure is feedback, and feedback is a champion's breakfast."
Professor Gering was the WORST professor I've ever had at FIT. Would spend classes just deriving an equation that would already be given to us, homework was way harder than the lecture examples, 2 tests worth 15 and 20 percent. Final was worth 30% and he mentioned that he had to curve and add extra points to get a 75% overall class grade. Dont take
Professor Gering is quite literally the worst professor I have ever had. I like physics and its concepts a lot, but Gering's class made me hate it. He doesn't teach. He doesn't help. He won't learn your name. He wouldn't round my 89% overall grade to an A. Do not take his class. You will hate your life.
One of the worst classes I have ever taken. His class and lab are despicable, always very difficult, and very little help even in class. He was not a terrible person, but he did almost nothing for his students and their learning. One redeeming quality was that he did offer make-up quizzes after everyone failed.
Physics Review is the lowest level physics class that can be offered. It's clear Gering is tenured, or he would be fired. He does not care about the course and gives little effort. Class attendance is pointless, as nothing is reviewed, however it is mandatory to take in person quizzes. This course and professors are a waste of valuable time. AVOID!
This was a hard course in my opinion. He gets a lot of hate, but I thought he was great. He explains the material clearly and his in-class examples are super helpful if you follow along. The homework is a lot but definitely doable. He's a super nice guy and if you try you can do good in his class.
By far one of the worst classes I have ever taken in my time as a student. Treats his students poorly and like elementary children. He made the class extraordinarily confusing/difficult. I love physics and had taken it in high school; this class made it more confusing. He had his positive moments, but they were few and far between.
Hell on earth
He is incredibly difficult as a professor. You are graded harshly and by a GSA based on rules that are difficult to get correct the first homework attempt. He does not post homework assignments very on time, leaving very little time to space out the assignment and instead only a day or two to actually get it done before the due date. SWITCH PROFS!!
Very tough on grading, especially the format. I got 10% taken off an assignment because I didn't leave a big enough margin between the top of the paper and my name >:(
Course is required for most bachelor's degrees. Don't understand how bro even has a job at this point.
Worst professor at FIT. Lectures are pointless but mandatory. Nobody knows how he still has a job. Very few people are passing. Would give a 0/5 if I could.
Nearly impossible to pass his class
This professor is by far the worst professor I had yet. I have him for a single credit hour class and he some how made it the most difficult class in my freshman year. He is head of the physics lab so he is unavoidable, just pray he either gets fired or changes
Regretfully, this class is required for most people at FL Tech. Just power through and accept that you're not getting an A nor B no matter how hard you try. Gering doesn't seem to care about the well-being of his students, and I truly hated this course. It made me want to go big wave surfing and never return just like Bodhi in Point Break. Regards.
I hope he gets fired
The fact that this guy is the only Physics Lab teacher available at FL Tech is just ridiculous. He has so many bad reviews. His lab manuals are poorly written and difficult to understand. Not to mention I was paired with a lab partner who knew absolutely nothing. This teacher brought down my otherwise high GPA/Usual grades. Take lab elsewhere!
We need to make an appeal for this university to remove him. Its crazy to me, how he doesnt read emails, make poorly written lab manuals, grade extremely harshly, and sometimes it doesnt even make sense, and yet we still have only him for physics lab.
Physics 1 and Physics 2 lab are both one credit classes, however, somehow they ended up being the most time consuming and difficult classes I had to take this year. The lab manuals are almost impossible to understand and there are a bunch of mistakes in them. If you don't have a good GSA who knows how to help for this lab get ready for a bad grade
For labs your gsa will save you. I had Raghav, 10/10 recommend. He rewrote a procedure for us because the lab manual was so confusing, and he helped us understand the concepts during lab so much. He really cared that we learned the material. Just drop if u have a bad gsa.
Let me tell you a story. I was on the way to his class when a security officer yelled at me for not crossing safely. I told him I was on my way to Gering's class. He asked me why'd even looked at all. The end. Don't take him. You'll learn nothing, you'll leave more confused. I had an A+ and it dropped completely randomly last week of class.
If you have never taken physics before, do not take Gering. I had taken AP physics 1 and 2 a year beforehand and this man made me unlearn physics the first few weeks of class. After I stopped paying attention to what he was teaching us I did better in the class. His homework criteria is extremely annoying but not by accuracy. Just don't take him.
Absolutely worst class ever. 1 credit Class with the difficulty and expectations of 3 credits plus. Class is very unclear and not guided well. Grading for lab reports is all over the board as well as due dates for HW . The whole structure of the class is just horrible. I highly recommended avoiding any of his classes. He is a teacher not a Prof.
Get ready for a class that will absolutely destroy you. Physics 2 lab is the definition of hell on earth with the labs being incoherent to figure out and sometimes flat out wrong. Furthermore, physics labs at FIT are the only labs of this class in regulation to have a final test. By far the worst expirience. Get ready for a C/D in a 1 credit class.
Physics lab 2 was just awful. You had to put in so much work that you spend more time doing lab reports than homework you do in actual important classes. This class was even worse than physics 1 lab. The lab manuals don't change over time either so you're reading manuals that aren't correct anymore.
