Such a great guy and phenomenal teacher. Recommend this class.
Great teacher, he takes the time to learn everyone's names. Makes the material very clear, his lectures highlight the key points in the textbook. Great teacher, great class, not a lot of work
Best geology professor in U-M.
Genuinely good person.
A great teacher, genuinely cares about his students. Teaches concepts throughly. He has a good sense of humor and is always willing to clarify things (although clarification usually isn't necessary). If you have the opportunity to take a course taught by him, definitely take it!
No-brainer 1 credit, definitely take it.
Awesome teacher that genuinely cares about both the material he covers and his students. It makes such a difference when you get a professor like him. Such a good guy.
He's such a cute man and he's so passionate about what he teaches. My class was a mini-course, which was super easy and really interesting. He includes lots of pictures in the slides and is a good lecturer. He also makes jokes fairly often. I would definitely recommend taking a class with him.
Gleason is absolutely the best professor I've had here at the University of Michigan. He's incredibly knowledgeable about what he instructs, and lectures in a clear, cohesive, and most importantly interesting way. Also, his exams are not hard if you listen to what he says in lecture (where he literally tells you what he's putting on the exams. A+
Gleason was one of the three professors that taught my Environ 110 class. Although his material was the most difficult out of the three, he was definitely the most enthusiastic about what he was teaching and did a really great job of explaining concepts. And he was so nice!
Gleason is fantastic. Incredibly clear in instruction and he makes his lectures just fascinating. He makes CRYSTAL CLEAR all the information for the final exam. Take solid notes and write down the mock quiz questions at the end of lectures and you're golden. Responds to emails in minutes, even late at night, and he always takes questions in class.
Professor Gleason was pretty great. Earth 113 is a mini-course, so it wasn't a ton of work, but it was fairly interesting because he really knew his stuff. If you liked this class, you can take Astro 101... it's 4 credits, the same information, and also really easy.
Easiest class ever. Just memorize the slides and you will get an A+. He is a great guy and his slides are easy to follow. Most of the times he will highlight the most important concepts you need to know. I never went to class and I got A+. Best mini course ever.
If you have room in your schedule for 1 more credit, take his mini-courses. Easy as that, no second guessing. Don't do it for the A+ either; Gleason is such a passionate guy and presents the information so well, you'll be counting the days til your next lecture.
Long live the Professor!
Super easy class! Only grades are 4 take-home quizzes and the final exam
I took Gleason's 1 Credit astronomy course. It is vey well taught. He is a smart, kind man. I did, however, find the final to be pretty challenging for a 1 credit course. Mind you it is the only graded assignment he provided the whole term. Class average was in the B range. Not a breeze by any means!
Seems to be a really nice guy. Only took a mini course but was clear about what would be on the tests during lectures and holds a review session for the final exam . Weekly quizzes that aren't too bad and he seems to want everyone to pass. He also really knows what he's talking about and is super passionate and helpful.
Great class but still not convinced.
I had Dr. Gleason before for another mini class. He is an excellent teacher and a fun guy. I took the class just to get one credit closer to the 120 credits required for graduation. I do not care about the subject of global warming, but Dr. Gleason got me a bit interested in the topic. As long as you pay attention minimally, you should be fine.
Made geography fun.
Best professor at the university.
This is a good course. It's easy to get A.
This class is very easy, and the material is interesting. Jamie is really funny, helpful, and clear in his explanations of key concepts. Labs are straight forward, and the GSIs are great. Tons of easy EC on the midterm and final, very clutch. Show up to lecture because he gives you a lot of info that isn't on the slides that is helpful on exams.
I had Jamie as a lecturer for my global change class. Although the class itself wasn't super easy, that was mostly due to the labs (STELLA modeling is not my forte). He is passionate, caring, and by far my favorite lecturer for the class! Would love to be in another one of his classes someday!
Joke of a class. If you go to lecture, pay minimal attention, and study a little for the final, it's an A. Quiz averages in the class was about a 90-95+ every time. He is quite boring during lectures though. As long as you put some effort, it's an easy A.
He is literally my spirit animal. His love for the course speaks volumes as to who he is as a man. I firmly believe that he is the best professor on this campus. We do not deserve him. Yet, we are so blessed to have him. Highly recommend. I have never truly lived until I took this class. Such an enlightening experience!
Take this class if you need 3 natural science credits. You're welcome.
Perfect class for NS credit. Reasonable/pretty light workload, amazing professor. Super interesting material. Jamie is a legend.
Jamie was an excellent teacher. Class was easy and very informative. He was specific on what he wanted on each assignment and was clear on what would be covered on each quiz and exam. He is very enthusiastic about his work and the classes he teaches, and when combined, make the classes far more engaging. Take the class.
Great professor, passionate and lively. Straightforward material presented clearly. No book to buy, everything comes from slides. 4 open book quiz's and a final. Clear expectations, minimal homework and no surprises. No reason not to take this mini-course.
Jamie was one of the coolest professors you'll meet. He made the class very straight forward and simple, while keeping it interesting by bringing in rocks and other things for everyone to pass around. Highly recommend taking a class with him as the professor!
Prof Gleason was really great! He made the class really interesting (especially for non-science majors). The homework quizzes were directly from lecture notes (which are posted online). Criteria for the exam was very straightforward. An awesome prof and class!
My favorite teacher so far at Michigan. Super engaging and passionate about his job. Knows so much about earth related topics and kept us up to date on current earth events. Looking to take another class with him again. Show up, pay attention, do the work and get an A.
Gleason was a good lecturer overall. He did a good job explaining concepts and answering questions about the material. At times, he got a little dry.
Attendance doesn't matter except for the couple of quizzes (easy). The hardest part is the labs (once a week during lab time), but if you can get some good people in your lab section to work with then it's not a problem. Tests are so easy and do not need to be in lectures to learn for tests and do well.
He really cares about what the material he's teaching and is very passionate. He would show us some stuff that wasn't important material but just because he thought it was cool, which is nice to see that he actually cares about the topic and not just throwing information at you. Definitely recommend him!!
Professor Gleason is passionate in lectures even for this 1-credit minicourse. The contents were very easy to understand and catch up. Attendance is not mandatory. The final exam is also super easy.
Professor Gleason is by far my favorite professor at the University! He is extremely passionate about his course and you can tell he wants each and every student to succeed. All you have to do is show up to class and you will pass. Professor Gleason tells you exactly what will be on his exams and quizzes so there are no surprises.
It's very evident Prof. Gleason is passionate about not only the subject, but also teaching too. He even adds links to pictures of places or trailers of documentaries which relate to the material and shows them in lecture just to keep the class intrigued. He presents the information clearly and is sure to elaborate if students ask questions.
Probably the easiest 1-credit course you can take. James Gleason is really passionate about the material and altho material is dry, his passion makes lectures interesting. Class structure consists of 4 Canvas quizzes and a final MC exam. All answers are in ppt slides. Attendance is not mandatory. Prof is a gem and the class is a piece of cake!
Professor Gleason is really such a cool guy! It's so cute how passionate he is about his subject area. To me, the material in the class is rather dense and difficult but he does a really good job of breaking down complex concept in class. He emphasizes important parts of the lectures. Lab is difficult but you can take home the labs to turn in later
He is so amazing! Very passionate and wants everyone to succeed.
Gleason is amazing. Such interesting lectures that give you such great general knowledge about the world. Just a few online open book quizzes and a final exam for an easy A in this minicourse. I definitely recommend James.
Second time taking a class with Jamie and I wish I could have more! He is such an amusing and nerdy lecturer! He will get really excited when talking about Basalt so get ready to see a lava sample in class everyday! His exams can be hard if you don't look at lecture slides + he says some things in class that are on the exam but not on slides.
Easy 1 credit class. Graded on 4 4-question quizzes and a final. Just go to class and listen in for the 50 minutes that you're there and u shouldn't have to study much and should get a very easy A. Its a half term class so just keep up with it by going to every lecture and you shouldnt have to do anything outside of class.
Dr. Gleason is the most upbeat and caring professor I've ever had. Extremely approachable and is always willing to help. He includes tons of outside links in his slides so you can go more in depth into the information. Showed a lot of short videos to make the material memorable. Hopefully I will be blessed enough to have him again.
Jamie is straightforward, re-emphasizes key points, and really cares about the topic at hand. Just four open-book quizzes and a final. Very easy questions if you attend lecture.
Dr. Gleason was a good professor. Material was relevant and grading was really light for a 1 credit course. Would highly recommend taking him for 1 credit classes. You need to complete 4 quizzes and then take the final. The final is the only difficult aspect about this class (you need to study) - overall he is a solid professor.
I regret not attending most of the lectures because Professor Gleason was incredible, now that I think about it. If you don't attend the lectures, just memorize the content from his PowerPoints that he posts on Canvas because the final exam questions come, word for word, straight from those PowerPoints. Overall, this class was an easy A.
Amazing lectures and extremely passionate about the subject, even though this is a 1 credit course. Truly made the subject much more interesting to learn and made waking up at 9AM for lectures worthwhile. While an easy A, don't blow this class off completely since your final is 50% of your grade. Overall a great class with an even better professor.
I absolutely LOVE Professor Gleason and Earth113. I only took this class for an easy NS requirement and it far exceeded my expectations. The material is super digestible, engaging, and it really piqued my interest in astronomy! Plus Professor Gleason is one of the sweetest professors ever! 10/10 recommend!!!
Earth 114 was a great experience with him. I really appreciate the simplicity of the course - he understood that it was a 1-credit course during a pandemic, and took it easy on us, while making sure we learned something. I can't speak to his teaching in a normal setting, but if it's anything like his video lectures, I'd strongly recommend him.
Took this as minicourse. Was able to get 100% on all tests and quizzes without watching lecture recordings because the lecture slides had plenty of information on them and helped you follow the material.
(COVID SEMESTER) Professor Gleason is very consistent (no surprise assignments), clearly knows what he's talking about, and is very engaging with the material. He genuinely seems to care about what he teaches. The class was asynchronous with a weekly quiz and a final exam. I wish I could have met him in person, he seems like a nice guy.
This is the second time I've had a class with Prof. Gleason- he is phenomenal! He's one of the best professors I've had at UMich. He is very kind and presents information thoroughly. I highly recommend taking at least one class with him during your time at UMich!!! (I took Earth 114 and 113 with him; both were super interesting!)
(I'm taking this online due to Covid.) Gleason is one of the best and easiest professors ever. His quizzes, which are the only assignments for the class, are all open-note, and all of the answers to the quizzes are on the slides that are downloadable online. He doesn't try to trick you with the wording of his quizzes, ever, unlike some professors.
The class is very easy since Prof. Gleason puts all of the information that you need to know on the slides, and all of the quizzes and the final exam are open note.
Took both of his Earth minicourses (113 and 114) back to back this semester and it was far and away the best choice I've made this academic year. Super understanding, accessible, and made everything super manageable. The gold standard and what every minicourse should look like.
Took his earth 113 course (during COVID) and it was very easy. All the quizzes were open note and information from his slides looked exactly the same on the quizzes. He tells you what you need to know for the quizzes & the final is exam is just all the questions from the quizzes in one exam. I will be taking his earth 114 course next fall.
Professor Gleason is a gem. Great guy and Super passionate about what he teaches etc.. . This is literally the gold standard of what a mini-course should look like. Really enjoyable class. Light workload, simple quizzes, fun topics. HIGHLY recommend this class to anyone.
Absolutely love Prof. Gleason! His mini-course is engaging and really teaches you a lot in such a short time. All the questions for quizzes and final are directly from lectures and super straightforward. He is also really accessible outside of class just for fun chats and has done super cool work; overall just a really fun and great professor!
Very interesting material, and you can tell he's passionate about it. He's pretty down-to-earth. I recommend taking his classes if you want a relaxed but encouraging learning environment.
Professor Gleason is extremely kind and caring as an instructor. Despite this being a mini-course, he seemed very dedicated and enthusiastic about teaching us about the material. Only a few easy quizzes and one exam , so workload is low. I definitely recommend taking this course, it's easy, interesting, and Prof Gleason is a good guy.
I honestly didn't even watch any lectures, google and the class slides are sufficient enough. He's really lenient with quizzes and tests, everything open book and are open on canvas for a long time. Also the test questions are very straight foreword, he doesn't try to trick you or anything.
By far one of the best professors I have ever had! His class is super easy, all the exam questions come directly from the lecture slides and in general, the lectures are super chill. Jamie is extremely nice and makes an effort to learn students' names and help with any and everything! I would definitely recommend him and his classes!!!
Really easy class highly recommend it. Your whole grade is based on 4-5 quizzes that are open note and all the answers are on the slides.
Took both of his planets and moons class and climate change class. Both were very easy to do well in. Highly recommend Professor Gleason, especially if you're looking to fulfill your NS reqs. All his materials and slides are clear and concise. You will do well if you look through his slides!! He is very understanding.
He is a professor that genuinely loves geology and wants the rest of his students to love it as much as him. The class is easy but I also felt like I learned a lot because we went through what could be hard content at a pace that made it easy to truly understand the concepts. I totally would recommend him.
Very good professor. Always prepared and cared about students. Able to attend lecture in person or watch online.
Take him for an easy distribution class. Lab is required attendence. Quizzes and exams are online & a joke
While Jamie Gleason is a very funny, knowledgeable, and caring instructor, I found lectures to be long and boring (this could just be my distaste for the subject matter, but getting through lecture is a chore). However, the class is very easy, and has a light workload. If you can get past the boring lectures, I would recommend this NS minicourse.
Jamie is awesome. Really knowledgeable about the subject and really enjoys sharing his knowledge.
An amazing professor! He always answers questions and takes time to clear up any confusion. His mini-courses have an extremely light workload with very easy grading. Great natural science credit.
Jaime was such a sweetheart, and you could tell he genuinely loved what he was teaching us. Having never taken a geology class, I loved how 120 was stress-free, and I learned so much about national parks that I never would have learned otherwise. I'd easily recommend Jaime to anyone who needs natural science credit who isn't a STEM person.
Absolutely loved taking EARTH 113 with him. He makes the course accessible to students through lecture recordings, the quizzes are open-note, and the final only consists of a take-home multiple-choice exam on Canvas. His lectures are easy to understand and his slides are in-depth. Definitely taking another course with him soon.
Easy NS credit. You have to go to every lab to do well. They're 2 hours long but a lot of it is free time. Exams and quizzes were easy, and your lowest lab and quiz grade gets dropped. Definitely recommend!
Gleason is one of the best professors you'll ever have at the university. I can't recommend him enough. His classes are fun, engaging, and super easy, all while being genuinely informative in the topic at hand. If one of his classes match a particular interest of yours, do yourself a favor and take it! Everyone loves this guy, and for good reason.
i initially took his minicourses just to fill out my natural science requirements, but i ended enjoying the course material a lot! it'd be easy to take this as a blow-off class and not watch any of the lectures, but jamie is clearly very knowledgeable and passionate about the subject, which makes it engaging and fun to learn from him.
My fav professor. He's the best of the best in what he does and you'll learn a lot if you pay attention.
So easy. You never need to go to class. Download the lecture slides. Quizzes AND final are open note, just control F through the slides and you're golden
Everyone at Michigan needs a Gleason mini course!
Attendance was optional and grade was determined by four quizzes (lowest of five dropped) and a final exam--all multiple choice, open book. Professor Gleason is very knowledgeable and passionate about planets and moons. He's a very kind man who is always open to answering questions. Everyone should take a science class with him!
Best class I've taken at Michigan. Exams were open note and online. Love him. I love the Earth more now bc of him.
He is super sweet and caring! I highly recommend you take this class for your NS requirement. Attendance is not mandatory and all of your weekly quizzes and exams are online and open note. The only thing is the labs are kind of annoying and long and some GSIs take a really long time to grade them but overall it's really easy to get an A.
Very awesome guy and passionate about what he teaches. Always willing to help if you're having trouble. Earth 201 is an easy A, but the labs are harder than I expected they would be. They're really long too. But beside that, great professor and easy class.
Fantastic Lecturure, could tell that he really loves what he talks about. The exam and quizes were very nice as they were online and open note. Would take a class of his again in a heartbeat.
